tour a seattle

Located in Washington state in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is famous for many things—its iconic skyline, magnificent scenery, eclectic culture, and, of course, the tech industry and Starbucks. The Emerald City is young and vibrant, smack dab in the middle of pristine nature. You can easily fill your time bouncing between world-class museums, stunning parkland, and welcoming coffee shops and never get bored.

Just a warning: You may go broke! Seattle is an expensive city, so budget your trip wisely.

Planning any type of travel can be taxing, so to help you get started with your itinerary, we’ve put together a list of the top excursions and tours in Seattle. This has been created based on the experience of our own in-house travel experts along with TripAdvisor and Google Map reviews.

Enjoy a scavenger hunt in Seatown!

One of the most popular ways to see a new city or rediscover a favorite destination is on a tour, and Let’s Roam offers some of the most unique excursions available! Our Seattle Scavenger Hunt Tours will have you and your travel companions testing your smarts with questions about the attractions you visit. Earn points, take pics, and see who comes out on top!

21 Tours in Seattle

Below you’ll find a list of some of our favorite tours of Seattle including everything from bus tours to wine tastings. These tours can give you a great taste of Seattle and we are sure that they will leave you wanting more!

Seattle City Tours

Here at Let’s Roam, we absolutely adore exploring new cities, and although it’s great to be able to simply wander around on your own, sometimes guided sightseeing tours can help get a much better understanding of a city and what makes it so special. From walking tours to bus tours, these trips are usually well worth the money and can be the perfect introduction to a city, especially if you’re a bit short on time.

1. Three-Hour City Tour

During this sightseeing bus tour brought to you by Show Me Seattle , you can see many of the most popular attractions that Seattle has to offer! Highlights of the tour include Pike Place Market, the first Starbucks, Chinatown, the Seattle Center (home of the iconic Space Needle), Queen Anne Viewpoint, and Ballard Locks.

The “buses” are roughly the size of minivans so don’t worry about being one sightseeing tour with a huge group of people. Show Me Seattle also offers a food tour and private tours that are perfect for bigger groups as they can work around your schedule.

2. Beneath the Streets Tour

This fascinating Beneath the Streets Tours lets you look deep below the streets of present-day Seattle to see Pioneer Square, the original neighborhood. As you walk through the underground passageway on this one-hour tour, you’ll step back in time to the late 19th century.

During the tour, you learn the history of Seattle’s early years as well as stories about The Klondike Gold Rush. Tours are limited to 16 people, and departures are a bit limited on Tuesday and Wednesday, so be sure to check their website for the most up-to-date information.

If you want to learn a bit more about Seattle’s dark underbelly, you can also join their after-hours red-light district tour where you can learn about the city’s history with gambling, prostitution, and drinking. These evening tours are only available on weekends and last approximately 75 minutes.

3. Seattle By the Sound Scavenger Hunt Tour

Here at Lets Roam, we love hunting nearly as much as we love roaming and one of our favorite ways to explore Seattle is by doing a Seattle by the Sound Scavenger Hunt ! This hunt takes you along the Seattle waterfront where you can test your knowledge with trivia associated with Belltown and Pike Place.

Have you ever wondered how far a fish can be thrown or what Washington State’s greatest wheel is? Here’s your chance to find out!

During the hunt, you’ll learn more about Seattle’s storied buildings, epic sculptures, and sprawling green spaces, and have a great time doing it! While the tour normally takes about an hour and a half to two hours, it can be done as fast or as slow as you want, giving you plenty of time to stop and grab a coffee or beer along the way.

4. Food Tour of Pike Place

This food tour led by Eat Seattle lets you taste your way around Pike Place Market, one of Seattle’s most well-known landmarks. Led by a professional chef, some of the tastings include things like chocolate, pasta, chowder, and more.

The tastings are pretty generous and you can usually skip lunch after doing this tour. If you’re a bit short on time but love the idea of doing a food tour, check their schedule as they occasionally offer abbreviated hour-long tours.

5. Snoqualmie Falls and Seattle City Tour

What happens when you combine a Seattle city tour with an excursion to Snoqualmie Falls? One heck of a day! Organized by Shutter Tours , this four-hour trip takes you to many of the top attractions in Seattle such as Pioneer Square.

After you’ve explored the city, you’ll head out to see the Cascade Foothills and the breathtaking Snoqualmie Falls before circling back to see the Fremont Troll and the Ballard Locks. The tour finishes at Kerry Park where you can get some great photos of the Seattle skyline.

If you love this experience with Shutter Tours, you can always join them for their Mount Rainier Tour.

6. Seattle Brewery Tour

Seattle, and the entire Pacific Northwest, is famous for its delicious, high-quality craft beers and a Seattle brewery tour is the perfect way to increase your hoppy-ness factor! During this brewery waking tour , you’ll get to visit three different craft breweries where you can taste distinctive beer styles as part of a four-beer flight and learn a lot about the history behind Seattle’s beer scene. Best of all, you’ll discover the things that you need to look out for when beer tasting and you get to take home a souvenir beer tasting glass to remember the tour as well as a souvenir bottle opener.

There is a multitude of beer tours to choose from including tours going through Old Ballard, Central Ballard, East Ballard, Fishermen’s Terminal, and Georgetown. Tour departure times vary but with frequent departure times throughout the day, you’re sure to find one that suits you perfectly!

7. Sleepless in Seattle Bar Crawl

If you love the idea of doing a pub crawl but would prefer doing it at your own pace, why not try a Sleepless in Seattle Bar Crawl ? This exciting activity will have you racing your friends to complete wacky challenges at some of Seattle’s most trendy bars. Since you can pause the game whenever you want, you can spend a little bit of time talking to that good-looking stranger over by the bar before heading off to the next spot (wink, wink). Just don’t leave your friends waiting for you for too long!

Boat and Kayak Tours

From Puget Sound to Lake Washington, Seattle is surrounded by water. One of the best ways to see this side of the city is on a boat or kayak tour. From wildlife watching excursions to romantic dinner cruises, there are many options to choose from whether you’re traveling as a family, couple, group of friends, or solo travelers!

Wildlife can be seen both near and far on many of the boat tours so make sure to bring some binoculars with you if you can. This helps enhance the overall experience and lets you get a closer look at birds soaring overhead.

8. Elliott Bay Sea Kayak Tour

Run by the team at Alki Kayak Tours , this two-hour tour of Elliott Bay and the Duwamish River is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Seattle area. While you’re paddling, you’ll be blessed with sweeping views of the Seattle skyline and the Olympic Mountains. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot California sea lions, bald eagles, harbor seals, and osprey.

During the tour, the guide will tell you about the history of Seattle and the unique ecosystems of Puget Sound. Tours are run daily and all participants must be at least 18 years old.

If you’d like a different kayaking experience, Alki Kayak Tours also offers trips to the Alki Point Lighthouse and sunset tours.

9. Harbor Cruise

This one-hour narrated boat tour by Argosy Cruises gives passengers a closer look at the Puget Sound, offering fantastic skyline views along the way. There is a full-service bar on board with snacks and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The staff are helpful and very informative and can help you spot the abundant wildlife found in the bay.

Tours run frequently throughout the day during the high season with few departures during the winter months. Make sure to get to the departure point at least 20 minutes before the boat is scheduled to leave and keep in mind that seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need some adult time, they also offer wine cruises as well as cruises along Lake Washington.

10. Seattle Dinner Cruise

On the two-and-a-half-hour yacht cruise operated by Waterways Cruises , you’ll be welcomed with a glass of bubbly before being seated at a private table where you’ll be served a three-course dinner. Throughout the tour, you’ll hear about Seattle’s sparkling city skyline and its beautiful lakes. The service is top-notch and the food is delicious, making this the perfect activity for a romantic evening or a special occasion.

Dinner cruises are offered from May to October (weather dependent). Tickets can be a bit expensive, so if you want to save a few bucks, you can opt for one of the Waterway Cruises brunch, sunset, or wine cruises. They also offer themed cruises throughout the year, and you can find a full schedule on their website.

11. Seattle Whale Watching Tours

Puget Sound Express gives you the chance to see some of the Seattle area’s diverse range of wildlife on these half-day tours. Some of the wildlife you may spot as you cruise through the San Juan Islands includes humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, otters, and more.

It takes about an hour to get to the islands and during that time, you can gaze out of the large windows, grab a coffee or some snacks at the onboard cafe, or hang out on one of the outdoor viewing decks. While it’s hard to guarantee what animals you’ll see on a cruise, Puget Sound Express promises that you’ll spot whales during the tour or they will give you your next trip for free.

Tours leave daily from April until October. Since the departure times vary throughout the year, it’s a good idea to check the schedule on their website.

If you simply can’t get enough of the wildlife adventure, they also offer bird-watching cruises as well as multi-day wildlife cruises.

12. Seattle to San Juan Island Whale-Watching

This is another solid choice for whale-watching excursions, especially if you want to spend a bit more time out on the water. Clipper Vacations offers full-day whale watching adventures on board a high-speed catamaran.

The trip begins with the voyage to the San Juan Islands, where you can loom for whales with the help of the onboard naturalist. Afterward, the boat will dock in the island town of Friday Harbor and you can spend two hours wandering around this picture-perfect little town.

The ticket prices for this longer excursion aren’t much higher than the half-day tours on other operators so make sure to shop around a bit before confirming a tour with a particular provider. The tour leaves from Pier 69 in Downtown Seattle from May until October.

It’s a good idea to schedule a whale watching tour for the beginning of the trip because they also offer a free trip if no whales are seen during your voyage. Clipper Vacations also offers overnight cruises.

13. Locks Cruise

Run by Argosy Cruises , the Locks Cruise consists of a two-hour narrated tour where you can get a first-hand view of how the Ballard Locks work. Watch as boats are either lowered or raised as they make their way into and out of Puget Sound.

The tour starts in Downtown Seattle from where you’re transported by bus to the starting point of the cruise. The tour then finishes at AGC Marina and they offer a bus service to get back to Pier 55 as part of their Boat & Cruise Excursion. Departure times vary throughout the year, and you can check their website for more details.

Like many of the other cruise operators on this list, Argosy Cruises also offers harbor tours, wine cruises, and history cruises so if you loved your experience with them, there are plenty more options to choose from.

14. Lake Union Hot Tub Boats

If you want to try a really unique way to see Seattle, Lake Union Hot Tub Boats may be just the thing you’re looking for! The company offers the “world’s first electric-propelled wood-fired hot tub boats”. The boats hold up to six people and are filled with fresh water, making it a little bit like taking a bath with your nearest and dearest while floating around in the lake and checking out the view of the Seattle skyline.

The water is kept warm thanks to a wood-burning stove, and everything is as environmentally-friendly as possible. You can rent the hot tub boat for two hours or more

Seattle is surrounded by some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery. While this accessibility to nature is without a doubt the reason why many Seattle-ites choose to live there, it’s also easy to get out into the natural landscapes as a tourist!

There are plenty of day trips that you can do to Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park. Although a day tour isn’t nearly enough time to see everything that these amazing parks have to offer (you would need months for that!), they can still give you a taste of the pristine landscape lying just outside Seattle’s doorstep.

15 Mt. Rainier Tour

One of the best things to do in Seattle is taking a day trip to Mount Rainier and Tours Northwest is waiting to take you there. The excursion begins with a drive through some spectacular scenery in an air-conditioned coach as you make your way to the mountain.

Once you have arrived at Mount Rainier National Park, you’ll have plenty of time to do some of the park’s shorter hikes where you can see rushing waterfalls, idyllic meadows, and pristine old-growth forests. The tour guides are very experienced and can give fascinating information about the flora and fauna that call the park home and can help you choose the best trails to hit.

Tours last approximately ten hours and run from May until October. Even with the extended length of the trip, each full-day tour excursion should get you back in Seattle in time for dinner. Park fees are included in the total price so make sure to keep this in mind when you’re comparing the tour prices.

16. Olympic National Park Tour

With nearly one million acres of land and an enormous array of ecosystems, including mountains, coastline, and temperate rainforests, Olympic National Park is big… like really, really big. No trip to Seattle is complete without seeing this amazing natural attraction. This full-day excursion with Customized Tours helps you catch a glimpse of each of the different ecosystems.

The 12-hour tour begins with a picturesque ferry ride across the Puget Sound before heading into the park which kind of turns it into a nature tour and boat trip in one! Although a bus takes you through the different sections of the park, there is still plenty of time to walk and it’s a good idea to wear comfortable shoes. The tour price includes pick-up from select Seattle hotels, and tours run from April through October.

Customized Tours also operates their own Mount Rainier Tour so if this is something that you’re also interested in, you can ask your tour guide for more details.

17. Leavenworth Day Trip

While the Seattle area is known for many things, the one thing that people may not realize is that there is a quaint German village located just a short drive away! Operated by Oktay Tour , this Leavenworth day trip whisks you from the streets of Seattle to the charming streets of Bavaria in the blink of an eye.

Each tour lasts around 8-9 hours, and you’ll pass by Snoqualmie Falls and Lake Washington before reaching Leavenworth. There, you’ll have a few hours to spend browsing through the shops, and checking out the local eateries. ‘

Wine Tasting Tours

Besides being lucky enough to be surrounded by epic scenery, Seattle also has more than its fair share of wineries. In fact, with more than 1,000 wineries located across Washington state, it’s the second-largest wine-producing region in the United States behind California.

During a wine tasting tour, you can try some of the best wines that are produced in the region. Most wine tours include transportation which means that you don’t have to worry about having a designated driver and everyone can join in on the fun! Plus, they tend to be small group tours, which means that you have plenty of time to get to know the other guests. You might even find some new friends!

18. Bon Vivant Woodinville Wine Tasting Tour

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly wine tasting option, Bon Vivant offers guided tours of Washington’s largest (and smallest) wineries. Depending on availability, they usually include a wide range of wineries which gives you the chance to experience the intoxicating array of wine options that Washington can offer!

The tour usually includes a stop for lunch, and it’s a good idea to budget around $20 per wine tasting and roughly $25 for a “progressive lunch” where you have one course at each of the wineries. Our stomachs are rumbling just thinking about it!

If you’re traveling as a group or simply know exactly the types of wineries you would like to try, you may want to consider a private tour. This customized wine tasting tour by Bon Vivant is perfectly designed with your group’s tastes in mind!

Before the tour begins, the expert guide will ask about your preferences and create an itinerary that fits your palette. Keep in mind that the tour prices do not include the wine tasting themselves and these should be budgeted separately.

19. Snoqualmie Falls & Seattle Winery Tour

If you can’t decide whether you want to spend a day exploring natural wonders or want to spend a day visiting wineries (although you could argue that wine is a natural wonder in its own right!) this six-hour tour lets you do both!

The tour visits Snoqualmie Falls and two wineries and the price of the tour includes pick-up service at Sea-Tac Airport and many Seattle tours. You start the day with a drive through the Cascade Mountains before reaching the 268-foot-tall waterfall where you can get some great photos. Next, the tour heads to Woodinville which lies about 30 minutes away from Seattle.

Note: There’s a quick stop at an artisanal candy shop, so you can stock up on tasty treats!

20. Snoqualmie Falls & Woodinville Wine Tasting Tour

If you love the idea of visiting the falls and wine tasting on the same day but you’re looking for something a bit fancier, you may want to check out this eight-hour tour Operated by Evergreen Escapes . The tour starts with a pickup in Seattle, where you’ll begin your journey through the Cascade Mountains.

After spending time admiring this rush waterfall, you’ll head to Woodinville, where you’ll have a gourmet picnic lunch and stop at three top-notch wineries. Learn how to sip like a sommelier during a fun, and informative, wine tasting lesson and get the chance to meet the winemakers behind the magic.

When all is said and done, you should be back in the city with plenty of time to freshen up before dinner.

21. Mount Rainier National Park and Yakima Valley Wine Tasting Tour

This twelve-hour excursion operated by Evergreen Escapes combines a 3.5-mile hiking experience in the famed Mount Rainier National Park combined with wine tasting in one of Seattle’s top wine-producing areas. The tour visits two wineries and includes coffee and pastries for breakfast, a family-style lunch, and plenty of snacks throughout the day.

This tour is the perfect way to explore Mt. Rainier (and burn some calories) and try some of the excellent wines of the Yakima Valley.

We made several stops where we got out of the van, including a lengthy tour of the Ballard Locks led by our guide. Our tour guide, Lucky, was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour exceptional. The tour gave us a great overview of the history of Seattle, its culture and its many interesting sites. I would highly recommend the tour.

Truly the best part of our trip to Seattle. Seattle Food Tour was yummy and the information was great, Marcia has so much energy and definitely knows her way around the market. I look forward to doing another tour in the future.

The Pike Place Market food tour was fantastic. And Lucky Lane, our tour guide, was super entertaining and helpful, providing us with additional tips for visiting Seattle and dropping us near places of interest, e.g. space needle, on the way back.

We only had a couple of days in Seattle and this tour gave us a comprehensive overview of all of the major sights of the city. Our guide Dave (Elvis) was brilliant. Friendly, funny and wonderfully informative about the city. Thank you for a lovely tour and great value for money.

Dave (Elvis) picked us up on time in a nice comfortable mid-sized coach. When we arrived at Boeing a Dreamlifter was just about to take off and he made sure we got to the roof to see it and video it. He made sure we understood the processes and procedures involved in the tour. The factory is engineering on a huge scale and we saw the production lines for 747, 777 and Dreamliner. An excellent trip all round.

Simply AMAZING!!!!!! Great food tour! Had such a fantastic time! The walking is very doable and the scenery of the market is amazing!

Our Honeymoon Trip

"Cory, our tour guide greeted us directly in our hotel lobby. We were the last of the tour to be picked up, so we were immediately on our way to the first winery! The tour does not include wine tasting fees, but there was a free tour that included some wine tasting (Chateau Ste. Michelle). We even had time to enjoy a glass of wine before the tour. Our tour guide took care of getting us our boxed lunches as we were at the winery! The next stop was Goose Ridge Winery, where we enjoyed lunch and another wine tasting. My husband saw that they also had cider tastings so he was able to taste cider! Our tour guide was very informative and personable, making the trip enjoyable. We had ample time to spend at each location. The falls were magnificent and it was convenient to be dropped off right at the falls! The last stop at the chocolate factory was a sweet end to our tour! We would highly recommend this tour!"

4-hour seattle city tour

We enjoyed our tour and our tour guide was very good about taking us to all the popular places as well as some side stops. (ex: Theo's chocolates, fisherman's landing, Kerry Park, Klondike National Park/museum). She was very knowledgeable and very informative about Seattle. We would recommend this tour and it is very reasonably priced.

Great Time!

Most beautiful place in Washington State with super friendly and knowledgeable guide

Wow, what a day! I wasn’t sure what to expect with it being pretty cold and wet, but this tour was a blast. It had everything, beautiful lakes, waterfalls, beautiful lush forest, ocean beaches, hiking (be prepared to do a fair bit, at least 5 or 6 miles). Cresent Lake is breathtaking and Tongue point was a beautiful surprise at low tide with all the tide pools. Joel did an excellent job of showing us all the diverse landscape and some super cool hidden gems. There were even a few things we missed due to road closures so I will definitely be going back on another tour when the weather warms up. This place is truly spectacular and I couldn’t have asked for a more friendlier and knowledgeable guide.

Since 1907, this bustling market near the downtown waterfront has been the go-to place for local produce. Today, you can find almost everything, from local artwork to vinyl records. Plus, the flower market and fish tossing are particular must-sees, according to reviewers. Though Pike Place Market is one of the most tourist-heavy attractions in Seattle (plan to run into crowds, especially on the weekends) that's no reason to scratch it off your to-do list. Recent visitors said the abundance of vendors and lively atmosphere make it an experience you shouldn't pass up, no matter how busy it gets.

The streets surrounding Pike Place Market are peppered with restaurants and coffee shops, and there's an information booth just west of the marketplace at First Avenue. If you want a little help navigating the massive market, guided tours and food tours are available from third-party companies.

If there's one thing Seattle is known for (aside from coffee), it's the 605-foot-tall Space Needle. Built for the 1962 World's Fair, the Space Needle has dominated Seattle's skyline ever since with its unique UFO-like design. The tower's 520-foot-high round observation deck offers spectacular views of the city and the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. The Loupe, a seasonal cocktail lounge, features a revolving glass floor. If you're not a fan of heights, check out the SpaceBase gift shop at the bottom of the tower.

Past visitors agreed that the Space Needle is a must for first-time visitors to Seattle, and recommend either purchasing your ticket online in advance or showing up early to avoid long lines. Several said they bought the combo ticket that also includes access to Chihuly Garden and Glass .

Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks) Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks) free

These locks – operated by the Army Corps of Engineers – are popular among Seattle visitors and locals. The locks allow boats to pass between Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Ship Canal, offering a live demonstration of Seattle's maritime lifestyle (many have compared the locks to a miniature version of the Panama Canal). After you've watched a couple barges pass by, head to the south side of the locks where fish ladders help salmon migrate during the summer months; if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a sea lion looking for a quick bite to eat. The fish can be seen up close from special viewing windows. The Chittenden Locks are also home to the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens, which feature a variety of 1,500 plants from around the world and beautiful views.

Many visitors suggested taking one of the free hourlong tours offered to learn more about the history of the locks. Tours depart from the visitor center. Enveloped by lush forests, alpine meadows and glacial landscape, 14,410-foot-tall Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano and the tallest mountain in the Cascade Range, takes center stage at Mount Rainier National Park . The park encompasses five developed areas, including Longmire, Ohanapecosh, Sunrise, Carbon River and Mowich, with Paradise being the park’s most sought-after. Here, hike the popular 5.5-mile Skyline Trail, which offers views of meadows blanketed by vibrant wildflowers in the summer months. In the winter, Paradise beckons powderhounds to explore its snowy terrain on snowshoes, cross-country skis and snowboards. For scenic viewpoints, head to 6,400-foot-high Sunrise Point to catch daybreak, the highest point in the park accessible by vehicle. And along Stevens Canyon Road, see reflections of Mount Rainier in the tranquil waters of Reflection Lakes.

Despite the two-hour drive from Seattle, recent visitors praise the park’s spectacular natural landscapes, deeming the journey well worthwhile. Additionally, many suggest bringing extra layers, even during the summer, as the park's elevation and mountainous terrain contribute to constant and unpredictable weather changes.

Past visitors said it's an enjoyable way to experience the art and ambiance Seattle offers, and appreciate that it’s crowd-free, despite its proximity to downtown. However, they say that unless you’re in the area, you shouldn’t make a special trip to the park as it’s not a “top 10” attraction.

The Space Needle isn't the only way to enjoy a bird’s-eye perspective of Seattle. In addition to office space, the tower also houses ground-floor retail, special event spaces and historical exhibits.

While the stunning views are the reason to go to the top of the tower, the food and beverages win high marks from reviewers as well, though some find the selection to be limited. Seattle Great Wheel Seattle Great Wheel

U.S. News Insider Tip: Elevate your experience by gathering a group of two to four for an exclusive dinner in one of the Great Wheel’s gondolas. In collaboration with its sister business, Fisherman’s Restaurant, you’ll indulge in a four-course dinner while suspended 200 feet in the air. – Vivian Chung

This colossal, 175-foot-tall Seattle Great Wheel punctuates the city’s skyline and has become an iconic landmark in downtown Seattle since its opening in June 2012. A single ride in one of the 42 climate-controlled gondolas involves three full revolutions of the wheel, lasts up to 20 minutes and offers unobstructed views over downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and, on clear days, Mount Rainier. Illuminated by over 500,000 LED lights, the Seattle Great Wheel hosts vibrant light shows every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from sundown to 10 p.m. during summer evenings.

Sky View Observatory Sky View Observatory

Billed as the tallest building in Seattle, the Sky View Observatory on the 73rd floor of the Columbia Center provides stunning panoramic views of Seattle, Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and the surrounding landscapes. To enjoy cocktails and light bites like flatbreads and wraps, head to the onsite Sky View Cafe & Bar.

Recent travelers strongly recommend choosing a visit here over the Space Needle, thanks to more affordable admission and fewer crowds that result in little to no wait time. Plus, with its viewing platform at 902 feet, the Sky View Observatory provides a notable height advantage over the Space Needle (which stands at 605 feet). For the mesmerizing sight of an illuminated city, reviewers suggest visiting the observatory in the evening.

Situated in Seattle's Chinatown-International District, the Wing Luke Museum is devoted to the art, culture and history of Asian Pacific Americans. The 60,000-square-foot facility, which is housed in a historic building constructed in 1910 by Chinese immigrants, features multiple galleries for both traveling and permanent exhibits. Among the latter are "Wing Luke and the Museum," dedicated to the institution's namesake, who was the first Asian American elected to public office in the Pacific Northwest, and "Honoring Our Journey," which highlights the Asian Pacific American immigrant and refugee experience.

Pioneer Square Pioneer Square free

If you like history, Pioneer Square should be on your your to-do list. This neighborhood was one of the first settlements in the Northwest U.S. (hence the name), and it has maintained much of its Old West identity. Today, you'll find the cobblestone area peppered with art galleries, restaurants and shops, not to mention an ornamental pergola, which provides shelter to those waiting to hop on the First Hill Line streetcar.

No visit to Pioneer Square is complete until you tag along on the Beneath the Streets tour, one of the best Seattle tours . On this one-hour excursion, expert guides will lead you through underground passageways dating back to the 1890s, sharing historical information, along with stories of the Klondike Gold Rush, the city's architecture and the Coast Salish tribes who originally inhabited the area. Reviewers applaud the well-versed guides and recommend the experience. If you prefer to explore above ground, visit the nearby Smith Tower and its 35th-floor observatory.

For a glimpse under the sea, head to the Seattle Aquarium, which sits along the waterfront just a few blocks west of the Seattle Art Museum. It may not be as impressive as other cities' aquariums , but Seattle's facility offers a wonderful introduction to northwestern sea life, such as local bird, fish, seals and otters. The highlight of your visit will most likely be the "Window on Washington Waters" exhibit, which houses aquatic animals native to the surrounding area in a 120,000-gallon tank.

Other points of interest include a coral reef tank and a kid-friendly touch tank, where your little ones can shake hands with starfish and sea cucumbers. And don't miss your chance to get the fish-eye view from the aquarium's underwater observation dome.

Founded in 1899, Woodland Park Zoo stretches across 92 acres and is home to more than 900 animals and 250 species, some of them endangered. Its exhibits include the African Savanna, featuring lions, giraffes, hippos and zebras; Humboldt Penguins, with penguins from coastal Peru; Tropical Asia, which includes orangutans, tigers, sloth bears and various birds; and the seasonal Butterfly Garden. The zoo also welcomes temporary exhibits, and in the past has hosted "Dinosaur Discovery," which displayed more than 20 full-size dinosaur replicas, including a 40-foot-long T. Rex. Woodland Park also houses two western lowland gorilla families.

Recent visitors generally appreciated the zoo's size and the number of animals on display, though some reviewers were disappointed to find that some animals were not viewable due to exhibits being unexpectedly closed.

Did you know?

The term “Skid Road” came from Pioneer Square

The 75-minute guided walking tour begins beneath Doc Maynard’s Public House, then spills into historic Pioneer Square, Seattle’s birthplace, before plunging underground for an exclusive, time-capsule view of the buried city.!

It’s the only way to tour the interconnecting tunnels of the world-famous Seattle Underground—don’t be fooled by impostors.

All the while, tour guides regale you with sidesplitting stories our pioneers didn’t want you to hear. It’s history with punch lines!

Tickets available in advance, online here and by phone at 206-682-4646, or at our ticket counter at 614 First Avenue, in Pioneer Place Park, Pioneer Square.

The tour ends in Rogues Gallery and the Underground Gift Shop, where you’ll find displays depicting the past and Northwest memorabilia. Sons of the Profits , the book by Bill Speidel upon which the tour is based, is our most popular souvenir.

Doc Maynard’s Public House, suitable for the entire family, offers affordable snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner, including fresh Northwest seasonal fare, and a full bar. Or order the specially priced lunch and tour combo when you purchase your tickets. (The tour starts with a 15-minute seated introduction, convenient for a quick bite before heading underground.)

The Seattle Scenic Seaplane Tour is a uniquely Northwest way to see this world-class city. OUR CITY’S SIGNATURE LANDMARK

The Space Needle is a landmark that was constructed for the 1962 World’s Fair, which was held in Seattle. At 605 feet from ground to tip, it was the country’s tallest structure west of the Mississippi when completed. The observation deck is located 520 feet off the ground, and offers a panorama view of the city skyline, the Olympic mountains to the west, the Cascades to the East as well as Elliott Bay and the Puget Sound. It takes the elevator 41 seconds to go from the base of the needle to the top.

“THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO immerse YOURSELF IN THE TRUE LOCAL, authentic EXPERIENCE OF PIKE PLACE MARKET”

Los Angeles Times

“Chef Sean was THE best. Of course taking this tour I have to acknowledge my bias for good food, but I was blown away by the way Chef Sean interwove not only incredible food across Pike Place Market, but also the rich history of the area and the stories of the people there today. You can tell how much he honors the hardworking families that make up this space and it was a breath of fresh air to hear how much the people that work (and live!) in the area care for one another and stepped up during Covid. This is an absolute MUST while in Seattle – don’t explore the market before you learn all the ins and outs of it first – you will appreciate it that much more when you finish the tour and go back in to get some goodies (with many discounted because of the tour!!) Thank you Chef Sean and team!”

“We took this tour with Sean Welsh and it was great! 11/10 recommend! The vendors we visited were awesome and it was so cool to learn about them and the history of the market! The food we sampled was delicious! Definitely give yourself time for another hour or so in the market after the tour ends. It’s a must to revisit the highlights and do a little shopping. Again we cannot recommend this tour enough! “‘

“ This company has five stars across the board for a reason! Sylas was our tour guide and, although I have only done it once, I’ll bet we had one of the best guides! This tour is worth every penny you spend. Several times throughout the tour, employees came over to say hi to Sylas. That lets me know this company is legit. If you’re on the fence, this is your sign to do it! Honestly, we might go a second time because we had such a great time. Thank you for the awesome experience!”

” Eric was great! He was knowledgeable about the market and food, and he made us feel the close relationships he had with all the vendors in the market! He gave us some history lessons as well as taught us about the food we were tasting. Would highly recommend taking this tour!”

The Perfect Self-Guided Walking Tour of Seattle

Table of Contents

The Perfect Self-Guided Walking Tour of Seattle

Seattle, Washington. The heart of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is a city renowned for grunge music, Starbucks Coffee, and rain. With an abundance of awesome sights, from the (kinda icky) Gum Wall at Pike Place Market to the towering Seattle Space Needle, the best way to admire all of these iconic landmarks is on a self-guided walking tour of Seattle !

As I was born and raised in Vancouver, I’ve frequently embarked on a weekend trip to Seattle. And in all my time there, I’ve never gotten bored of a few key areas: the Pike Place Historic District, Seattle Center, Pier 57… and with all these spots being within easy walking distance, the best way to visit them is by foot.

A Public Market sign at the edge of Pike Place on a sunny day, an essential stop on every walking tour of Seattle

Needless to say, you’ll be visiting all of these top Seattle spots on this walking tour . So without further ado, let’s begin: this is my self-guided Seattle walking tour.

Before we dive into all the stops on our walking tour of Seattle, remember that you can make whatever changes and modifications you’d like. That’s the best thing about self-guided walking tours ; you have the ultimate freedom to decide where to go!

With that being said, according to Google Maps, this Seattle walking tour covers 1.9 miles (3.06 km) and will take 40 minutes to complete. However, it doesn’t include all the time (and steps) you’ll spend browsing around. So, I recommend taking a full day out of your itinerary to complete the tour.

Now, once again, let’s begin!

First, let’s start our free walking tour of Seattle at Pier 57.

Home of the Seattle Great Wheel and Miner’s Landing , Pier 57 is the perfect place to start our walking tour. Filled with unique retails shops, stunning ocean views, various family entertainment, and several popular restaurants including The Crab Pot and The Fisherman’s Restaurant, Pier 57 is a vibrant, fun-filled wonderland perfect for those traveling with family and friends.

Ocean view of the Seattle Great Wheel, Seattle skyline, and Miner's Landing Pier 57; stops on my walking tour of Seattle

Here are the three best things to do at Pier 57 in Seattle:

  • The Seattle Great Wheel : Offering panoramic views overlooking Elliot Bay, the Seattle Great Wheel is a relatively new yet iconic Seattle landmark. Adult tickets cost $15, and it’s typically open from 11 am to 10 pm.
  • Miner’s Landing Pier 57 : Housing the most popular restaurants in addition to Wings Over Washington, Salish Sea Tours, and the Carousel, Miner’s Landing is filled with entertainment (perfect for kids!).
  • Seattle Aquarium : For those interested in the diverse sea life of the Puget Sound, the Seattle Aquarium is the best educational resource . Adult tickets cost anywhere from $24.95 to $34.95 (depending on the day you’re visiting), and the aquarium is open from 9:30 am to 6 pm.

A clown fish at the Seattle Aquarium, near some sea anemone and two other clown fish - a possible stop on your Seattle walking tour

  • Pier 57 Address : 1301 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101, United States

Next, walk along the waterfront to Pier 62. The first completed section of Waterfront Park, Pier 62 offers breathtaking views of the Puget Sound, as well as some delightful art installations and a floating dock. Admire the incredible ocean scenery before heading to our next stop: Pike Place!

  • Address : 1951 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 5 minutes to walk from Miner’s Landing Pier 57 to Pier 62.
  • Hours : 6 am to 10 pm, open daily.

The Perfect 7-Day Canadian Rockies Road Trip: How to Drive from Calgary to Vancouver

Planning to visit the Canadian Rockies? If so, check out my 7-day Canadian Rockies road trip itinerary!

Pike Place Market

Next, it’s time to explore Pike Place Market. One of the most popular Seattle tourist attractions (and an essential stop on all walking tours of Seattle), Pike Place Public Market is my absolute favorite district in Seattle.

The "Public Market Center" sign at Pike Place Farmer's Market, the best stop on the walking tour of Seattle!

Historic and vibrant, Pike Place is filled with life. First opened in 1907, Pike Place remains one of the oldest farmer’s markets in the USA . From comic book stores, antique dealers, fresh fish and produce, artisan crafts, and more, Pike Place Market offers a plethora of goods.

While visiting Pike Place, don’t forget to check out these key sights:

  • The Gum Wall : While I personally find it a bit gross, Seattle’s Gum Wall is a prominent local landmark worth checking out. On the side of the Post Alley’s Market Theater, it’s one of the most popular Seattle photo spots!

A section of the Gum Wall at Pike Place Farmer's Market in Seattle, with small bits of the brick wall visible under several colorful gum pieces

  • Rachel the Pig : Located under the iconic red Public Market Center sign, Rachel the Piggy Bank is a bronze sculpture based on the 1985 Island County Fair prize-winning 770-pound pig. Here, you can take some photos and donate some coins to help support Pike Place Market.
  • The Original Starbucks : While the Starbucks located in Pike Place Market is commonly referred to as the Original Starbucks, it is actually the second store that opened. Nevertheless, as the first Starbucks no longer exists, the Starbucks located in Pike Place is the closest we can get to the original. Drop by for some souvenirs and great photo ops!
  • Beecher’s Handmade Cheese : While I’m not a huge cheese enthusiast, I still adored having some of Beecher’s macaroni and cheese. Stop by to try some handmade artisan cheese!

A crowd of people huddled around a fresh fish stand as a fisherman throws fish onto the display of ice at Pike Place Public Market in Seattle

With so many sights to see in Pike Place Market, don’t rush this part of our walking tour of Seattle. Take your time and explore the shops and restaurants, before heading to our next stop!

  • Address : 85 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 7 minutes to walk from Pier 62 to the Pike Place Public Market.
  • Hours : Most businesses are open from 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Website : http://pikeplacemarket.org/

Victor Steinbrueck Park

Next, walk from Pike Place Market to Victor Steinbrueck Park. A small but charming park offering pleasant ocean views, it is worth visiting en route to our next destination. However, there are occasionally some sketchy characters hanging around, so be aware and stay safe!

  • Address : 2001 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98121, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 3 minutes to walk from Pike Place to Victor Steinbrueck Park.

Olympic Sculpture Park

The Best Time to Visit Seattle

To avoid Seattle’s infamous rain, one of the best times to visit Seattle is in the summer, from June to August. With average high temperatures ranging from 71°F to 79°F (22°C-26°C), the weather is warm and sunny.

However, as this is Seattle’s high season, the crowds are consequently bigger and accommodations tend to cost more (so it’s not the best time for budget travelers ).

Large crowds in front of the Public Market Center sign at Pike Place in July, one of the best times to visit Seattle

In my opinion, the best time to visit Seattle is in the shoulder season (spring and fall), with either September or October being the best month to visit Seattle. It’s also a great time to go on some walking tours in Seattle, as the weather isn’t too hot!

And That’s It for our Walking Tour of Seattle!

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and I hope you’ll love this walking tour of Seattle. Remember, as this is a self-guided walking tour , you have the final say in where you go and what you do. Best of luck, and happy travels.

  • K-pop star Jay of ENHYPEN talks about WA roots, Fate Plus world tour

Amy Wong

Jay Park doesn’t remember much about his childhood in Washington.

As a member of one of the world’s biggest Korean pop groups, ENHYPEN, he’s had much more on his mind — international tours, a Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade performance, being a Prada global ambassador — than the nine years he spent growing up near Seattle.

Since debuting with ENHYPEN in 2020, the 22-year-old multihyphenate singer-rapper-musician-dancer has experienced a whirlwind of stardom, amassing fans across the globe. Despite the sold-out tours and chart-topping albums, Park has been holding onto one particular dream for years: to perform in his hometown. He is finally making that a reality, with ENHYPEN’s April 28 concert at the Tacoma Dome.

Known by fans simply as Jay, the mononymous musician spent the early years of his life in Federal Way, where his parents settled after they attended college in the Pacific Northwest. When Park was 9, his family relocated to Korea for his dad’s work at a travel agency. Despite this, the entertainer still has fond memories of the street he grew up on, the rainy weather and Seattle’s culinary specialties.

“I really love the food in Seattle,” Park said in an interview over Zoom in early April. “Clam chowder is still one of my favorite foods. I try to eat it all over the world.”

Park has only been back to Seattle once, just a few years after the move.

After adjusting to his new home in a new country, quickly learning Korean and attending school, Park developed a love for all things music, including playing guitar, singing and dancing, and gravitated toward a career in the ever-growing, multibillion-dollar K-pop music industry.

“Being a K-pop idol was the best solution to do all the things I wanted in music,” he said. “I wanted to be a multi-entertainer.”

While searching for a way to break into the industry, Jay says that he got a bit of help from another Seattle-area born star: Jay Park , formerly of K-pop group 2PM. Not only did the two share the same name and hometown, but their fathers were also friends. The former 2PM performer’s decade of experience in the industry came in handy for 22-year-old Park.

  • 2019: ‘Like a dream come true’: A UW dance crew invited a K-pop group to dance with them in Seattle. A.C.E agreed.

“I was able to talk to [Park’s] manager about what I should do to become a singer and what it would be like when I debuted,” the ENHYPEN idol said.

Park eventually found his start training under label Big Hit Entertainment, now HYBE, developing his singing and dancing skills for almost three years before landing a spot on Korean music competition show “I-LAND” in 2020.

He and 22 other trainees participated in the show, spending almost four months refining their star power and talents in hopes of winning the grand prize: being placed in a new boy band. The new group’s album would be produced by Big Hit Music founder Bang Si-Hyuk, best known as the producer who helped create BTS, a legendary K-pop group.

While Park was confident he would debut as a K-pop idol, he knew that it would likely be his “last chance to achieve this dream.” If he didn’t make it through in “I-LAND,” he would continue to learn about and make music, and likely return back to the U.S. to attend university.

“I didn’t think about it that far,” Park said. “But I probably would’ve wanted to go home to Seattle.”

But over the course of the show, Park proved his talents and his dream did come true, landing him in second place on “I-LAND” and selected for brand-new music group ENHYPEN.

Despite debuting in November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the seven-member boy band quickly shot to fame. The key to ENHYPEN’s success: its musical versatility across genres and lyrical themes, the growing fan base who followed the group from “I-LAND” and backing from one of Korea’s most successful music labels.

Today, ENHYPEN has more than 9 million monthly listeners on Spotify, five Billboard 200-charting albums and a world tour under its belt. The group’s Fate Plus Tour includes its first Seattle-area performance, which marks Park’s first Washington visit in almost a decade. The tour date also marks another special homecoming: one for Park’s mom, who attended college in Tacoma and will join him at the concert.

“I’m really excited to look around my hometown, and with my fellow [ENHYPEN] members, too,” Park says.

ENHYPEN’s fans, known as ENGENEs, are just as excited for the group’s upcoming visit to the Seattle area. Several attending the Tacoma Dome show said they are planning projects to make Park feel especially appreciated.

Sam Romanik, a 25-year-old fan from Burien, is printing 4,000 banners emblazoned with “Welcome home Jay” and ENHYPEN song lyrics to pass out at the concert. When Park looks out into the crowd, Romanik hopes he’ll see the banners and “feel comfortable and welcome home.”

For many Seattle-based fans, knowing they grew up in the same place as Park makes them feel even more connected to the group, and wanting to show up for their hometown hero.

“Seattle will always welcome him home, and [we] want him to know that he has a place here,” said Rachel Ramirez, an ENHYPEN fan from Kent. “We want to be that supportive and safe place for them.”

Even though it’s been years since Park has been back to his hometown, he still carries pieces of Seattle with him everywhere, particularly his strong affinity for the Mariners.

For as long as Park can remember, his family were “really crazy fans” of the Seattle baseball team, and that love has “kind of become part of [his] identity.” Aside from the Mariners Moose plushie in his bedroom, Park shows his Mariners pride onstage with his in-ear monitors, which are emblazoned with the team’s blue-and-green compass logo.

But his strongest tie to the Seattle MLB team is actually his name: Park’s dad says part of the inspiration for it was beloved Mariners right fielder Jay Buhner. His dad’s constant references to Buhner “gave me the thought that he was almost like my second father,” laughs Jay.

It’s only fitting that following their almost sold-out Tacoma Dome concert, ENHYPEN will throw out the first pitch at the April 29 Mariners-Atlanta Braves game. Park admitted he is “a bit nervous,” but excited to be attending the game with his bandmates. He and fellow ENHYPEN members Ni-ki and Heeseung are practicing their pitch.

“I went there a lot as a child, but I don’t remember a lot of specific Mariners memories,” says Park. “It’s really exciting for this to be my first time there as an ENHYPEN member so I can create a new ‘first’ memory.”

South Seattle Emerald - Seattle Green Book Tour App Aims to Keep Local Black History Alive

"My understanding of the impact this tour could have on our communities is that we can, as People of Color, see our stories as important — and others who we share community with can do the same. When we see each other’s stories as important and finally understand the history behind who really built this city, we care about one another a little deeper, we hold each other a little tighter, and we then contribute to keeping that history alive. In doing this, we can be the Promised Land my grandmothers hoped for so long ago." - Troy Landrum Jr.

Seattle Times - New walking tour revisits Seattle sites from ‘Green Book,’ a segregation-era guide to safe harbor for Black Americans

"It was not a good time. We made good times. We were able to come together in that terrible era for Black people and have fun, eat food, listen to music, create. Legends were here in Seattle. It’s not something that needs to be recreated, it’s something we can return to." - Sadiqua Iman

KING5 Facing Race Series - 86-year-old book once helped Black travelers find safe spaces in Seattle

“ 'It goes back to continuing to share the story. It goes back to our people, talking to our kids about the history,' Stockard-McDaniel said. 'I started researching actual Green Books. I bought a couple online and actually found in the 1950 edition my great uncle owned a shop on Madison here in Seattle.'

"That business, the Stockard’s Barbershop, was listed as a safe place for Black people visiting Seattle. The building is long gone, but the principles it stood for still survive."

KOMO News - Seattle's 'Green Book Tour' revisits sites of Black-owned spaces during segregation era

“So many of these Green Book spots were functional–they were hotels and barbershops, but also opportunities for people to engage in a cultural experience based on self-expression, and dance and music." - Benjamin Hunter

Crosscut - New audio tour amplifies Seattle’s ‘Green Book’ history

"By all accounts, E. Russell “Noodles” Smith was something of a slippery character — but the bootlegger and gambler (who always hung on to a dime for a bowl of noodles at the end of the night) was also a real estate magnate and club owner who helped usher in Seattle’s jumping jazz scene in the 1920s and 1930s. As a successful African American businessman, Noodles operated two of the few hotels that would accommodate Black travelers — such as jazz greats Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong, musicians whom Noodles would invite to play in his Jackson Street clubs late at night, after their formal gigs.

"I didn’t know any of these details before diving into the incredibly rich history included in Black & Tan Hall’s Green Book Self-Guided Tour. Now I can’t stop listening." - Brangien Davis

KING5 News - Free self-guided audio tour, new community center aim to highlight Seattle's Black history

"The Green Book really shows us that Black history, Asian history, and our Seattle history are all intertwined and it’s important we don’t forget the places and people who paved the way” - Karen Toering.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …
