Travel to Yorkshire, England – Episode 334

travel and leisure magazine yorkshire

The Amateur Traveler talks to Elspeth about her native Yorkshire in northern England.

“Yorkshire has a very strong regional identity as a lot of English counties have. You will probably recognize the Yorkshire Rose as what became part of what became the Tudor Rose connected with the War of the Roses. It’s a very friendly place, most people comment on that when they visit. There is a fantastic coastline, there are inland national parks, its cities, its small towns, it’s a beautiful place. ”

Elspeth starts us in York with its rich medieval history, then takes us to some of the seaside towns, the larger towns of Leeds and Hull, and some of the smaller picturesque villages like Beverly where she grew up. She winds up in the countryside and the North York moors and the North Yorkshire dales.

Why a timeshare brand just bought Travel + Leisure magazine

Melanie Lieberman

One of the world's most iconic travel brands has been bought by a timeshare company.

Wyndham Destinations , which operates hundreds of timeshare resorts, acquired Travel + Leisure magazine from media company Meredith Corp. for $100 million, The Wall Street Journal reported last night. Collectively, the company — which will change its name to Travel + Leisure Co. early this year — will now have resort, lifestyle and travel club brands. Meredith will continue to publish the magazine under a 30-year licensing agreement.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

" ... We have laid the foundation to expand our footprint beyond our core vacation ownership business, and today we add one of the most trusted and influential brands in travel through the acquisition of Travel + Leisure," Michael D. Brown, president and CEO of Wyndham Destinations, said in a statement .

"As new stewards of the Travel + Leisure brand, we are committed to ensuring that the integrity and independence of its trusted, authoritative journalism remains uncompromised," Brown added, saying that Jacqui Gifford will remain at the helm of the magazine as editor-in-chief. "For 50 years, Travel + Leisure has offered travel inspiration to tens of millions across the world ... and we look forward to supporting Meredith as it continues that mission."

Acquisitions in media aren't exactly uncommon. During the years I worked at Travel + Leisure, ownership changed hands twice. Time Inc. bought the brand from American Express Publishing in 2013, and Meredith Corp. acquired Time in 2018.

And the pandemic has been an incredible hardship for both the travel and media industries. Skift reported that Meredith Corp. posted a $289 million loss in the third quarter of 2020. But even with vacation club revenue down 44% year-over-year during the same quarter, Wyndham Destinations still reported a $40 million profit across its operations.

There's also a precedent for hospitality brands using magazines to reach new audiences, and leveraging a trusted media name. In 2017, suitcase brand Away launched its own print and digital travel magazine, Here. That same year, Airbnb collaborated with Hearst Corporation on a namesake publication. And Skift pointed out that RCI, a timeshare exchange brand owned by Wyndham Destinations, already has an eponymous magazine, formerly known as Endless Vacation.

For this newly formed company, the Journal said the goal is to "grow ... membership travel-club businesses, offer new travel services and expand licensing agreements."

Related: How to use Wyndham Rewards points to book timeshares

But by aligning itself with a renowned travel magazine, getting access to all its platforms (including an Instagram account with 5.6 million followers, compared to Wyndham Destinations' current 4,087) and rebranding, Wyndham Destinations will also be better positioned to appeal to a new, younger and more affluent demographic of travelers. Skift underscored the company's persistent efforts to reach younger travelers and refashion the perception of timeshares .

"This strategic alliance brings a new, innovative approach to media brand development," Meredith chairman and chief executive Tom Harty said in a statement. "This is a great demonstration of the value that strong brands deliver when expanded beyond the media space," Harty added, suggesting there might be more "value-enhancing programs" in the media conglomerate's future.

T&C Hotel Awards 2024: The Best New Minimalist Hotels

When less is more, here are some perfectly pared-down places.

the tc hotel awards 2024

Sea Cabins at Manshausen, Norway

sea cabins at manshausen island, norway

Even by Norwegian standards, 14-acre Manshausen Island is out there, a place for close encounters with the extreme north. It’s also home to one of Norway’s architectural wonders: The Sea Cabins at Manshausen . The glass-walled Sea Cabins, brain child of Arctic explorer Borge Ousland, give you front-row seats on some of nature’s most impressive spectacles, from the midnight sun to the northern lights. Two new "sea towers," named Nansen and Amundsen, for two of Norway's famous explorers, even have glass roofs so you can count the stars from bed. More arduous pursuits? Plenty. Such as the Nordskot Traverse, a trail with cliffs falling away to each side. —John Newton

Boca de Agua, Mexico

hotel boca de agua by frida escobedoin mexico's yucatan

Star Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, who in 2018 designed London’s Serpentine Pavilion and is at work on the modern and contemporary wing of New York’s Metropolitan Museum, has built a hotel on Yucatan’s aqua-blue Bacalar lagoon. The 26 understated rooms of Boca de Agua use tropical woods (responsibly sourced), are flooded with sunlight that pours in through what are more windows than walls, and sit atop pillars—creating a treehouse effect and reducing environmental impact. Escobedo’s hope is that over time the hotel will further integrate into its tropical setting; as you'll wish you could after a few days here. —John Newton

To book a trip to Mexico, contact Zachary Rabinor of Journey Mexico, [email protected]

The Bolder, Norway

the bolder hotel on lysefjord by norwegian design firm snohett

Not far from Stavanger in southern Norway, Lysefjord cuts a dramatic path through mountains that rise thousands of feet along each of its shores. The latest addition to this visual feast is some cutting-edge Scandinavian design by Snøhetta, the Norwegian firm behind the Oslo Opera House and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt: The Bolder and its minimalist concrete-and-glass Sky Lodges, which appear to float above the fjord. Their muted interiors are pared back but warm, and the effect is somewhere between a cozy treetop aerie and a Bond-like modernist lair. —John Newton

To book a trip to Norway: Torunn Tronsvang of UpNorway, [email protected]

Otro, Oaxaca

otro hotel in oaxaca, overlooked by a baroque church

Hotels in this culinary and cultural capital of Mexico can often go overboard with handicrafts when it comes to their interiors. The 16-room Otro Oaxaca , from Mexico’s Grupo Habita (which over more than two decades has worked with talented architects and designers, both Mexican and international), opts for a very different look: that of a soothing oasis, at once modernist and inspired by ancient Mesoamerican sites like nearby Mitla. Raw concrete and brick buildings sit on the hotel’s courtyards offering picturesque perspectives while a rooftop terrace has views of the nearby Santo Domingo church, a Baroque gem. The rooms may feel spartan to some, but their simplicity focuses attention on the local elements of their design, like woven bedspreads and reclaimed wood walls. —John Newton

Longfellow Hotel, Portland, Maine

longfellow hotel portland maine lounge area

This new independent, family owned and operated hotel takes to heart the philosophy of its namesake, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who once wrote, “In character, in manners, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.” Think less a modernist aesthetic here, more a certain timeless New England restraint. The guest rooms at the Longfellow are comfortable and not flashy, with soaking tubs and views of Portland from TRNK couches. (The design is by Brooklyn-based Post Company, masters of an inviting vintage aesthetic.) The hotel also leans into a wellness theme, with its Astraea spa and healthy menu options at the Twinflower Café. Our Method : To compile this list of great-looking new hotels around the world, we followed not whimsy but rules: 1) They had to have opened no earlier than 2023. 2) They had to have been nominated by eithe r T&C ’s well traveled editors or our roundtable of 37 globetrotting travel advisors (preferably both). There were 172 nominees, and 53 made it through our vetting process. Bon voyage!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

THERE WAS A MOMENT, during the dark days of 2020, when a trip to London—London, of all places!—from our home in New York City felt wildly unattainable. And so it never even occurred to me, as the United Kingdom opened its doors to travelers in the fall of 2021, that my son, Bobby, was approaching the age when he could fully appreciate a vacation in the English capital. But after months of playing tourist on the streets of Manhattan, this spring we decided that Bobby was indeed ready for London, and for all of the magic a city of that age and size can deliver. One of our first stops was a Bridgerton-themed tea at the Lanesborough Grill (oetkercollection.com; from $89), a light-filled restaurant in Knightsbridge. The tea, with its Pall…

OBJECT LESSONS

IN PANGCAH, an Indigenous language of Taiwan, the word kamaro‘an means “place to live”—implying an invitation to linger a little longer or make yourself at home. Designers Yun-fann Chang and Shane Liu had this feeling of at-homeness in mind when they partnered with Tipus Hafay, a craft expert and Pangcah tribe member, to establish a line of home goods and accessories in 2015. Today, Kamaro‘an (kamaroan.com) is known for its distinctive light fixtures, ceramics, and accessories; the brand’s canvas bags are even stocked at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Hafay, who does social-enterprise work in her home county of Hualien, connected with weavers from around the island to explore Taiwan’s unique craft traditions. Kamaro‘an employs 11 Indigenous artisans, labeling each product with the names of those who made…

Here are the 10 best places to live in Illinois, according to this travel magazine

travel and leisure magazine yorkshire

Peoria has been rated among the 10 best places to live in Illinois by Travel + Leisure magazine.

The city placed seventh on the list, ahead of Rockford (No. 8), Moline (No. 9) and Chicago (No. 10).

The review noted Peoria’s affordability, with median home prices at $114,546, more than $200,000 less than the national average.

Peoria’s park system, which is one of the largest and oldest in the state, and the fact that Peoria is home to two universities – Bradley University and the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria – was also mentioned in the review.

The three cities topping the list were all located close to Chicago: Wilmette, first; Hinsdale, second; and Lake Forest, third.

Travel magazine highlights Florida barrier island. Here's what to know about Cabbage Key

travel and leisure magazine yorkshire

It can be a mix of emotions when a beloved regional place gets a spotlight on it. Excitement for its well-deserved praise, yet you can't help the need to gatekeep something you feel so much fondness over.

However, everyone must be exposed to the tranquil magic of Southwest Florida's Cabbage Key , with travel magazine Travel + Leisure recently highlighting the local gem to its audience.

"It’s the type of 'Swiss Family Robinson'-style retreat that represents a bygone Florida and has attracted famous writers and heiresses — not to mention presidents Carter and Kennedy," the piece writes.

Where is Cabbage Key?

Cabbage Key is a 100-acre island tucked off the coast of Fort Myers, part of a series of barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico. It notes online it is an ice age sand dune. According to geologists, the island has not flooded completely since the last ice age.

USA TODAY previously described the island as "lush with tropical foliage" and "intoxicatingly relaxing."

When was Cabbage Key established?

The Florida Museum of Natural History writes the small island first appeared on charts as early as 1859, with it labeled back in 1899 as Guanal Key and Palmetto Island.

"The first owner was Otto Stellrich from 1899 to 1905. The island reverted to state ownership after he failed to pay the two-dollar annual tax. After 1905, various persons tended groves, raised hogs, and brewed moonshine there," the museum writes.

Then in 1936, Alan Rinehart, a producer for Paramount Pictures, purchased the island. He hosted several stars and writers, including Katherine Hepburn. His mother, Mary Roberts Rinehart, wrote several short stories, articles, and plays while living on the island.

In 1944, Jan and Larry Stults purchased and re-named the island to "Cabbage Key." The residence became a restaurant and six-room accommodation. Over the years, the island has hosted the likes of Tony Bennett, Walter Cronkite, Ed McMahon, Ted Koppel, John F. Kennedy Jr., Hulk Hogan, Rob Lowe, Julia Roberts and Kevin Costner, to name a few.

How do you get to Cabbage Key?

So, can you just drive your car on over or take an Uber to this dream destination? Not quite.

The only way to get to Cabbage Key Island is by boat, ferry, water taxi, or seaplane. There are no bridges or causeways connecting Cabbage Key to the mainland.

Since there's no way to access the island by cars, this means there are no cars on the island — period!

Was Cabbage Key damaged by Hurricane Ian?

Like most of Southwest Florida, Cabbage Key took a major beating from Hurricane Ian in September 2022.

Based on past News-Press reports , the island saw damage from the wind and storm surge. Luckily, the island was said to bounce back and reopen after six months.

What restaurant does Cabbage Key have?

According to its own website , the iconic "The  Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant " is the spot to be as the only restaurant on the island. Known by many as “the bar with all the money on the walls,” its bar has also been serving up drinks to boaters for over 60 years.

T+L highlights other popular menu items such as stone crab claws, frozen Key lime pie, and the signature Cabbage Creeper rum cocktail. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year long.

Does Jimmy Buffett have a connection to Cabbage Key?

The late Jimmy Buffett is rumored to have written his hit song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” for the menu item at Cabbage Key. The story behind Buffett's famous hit about a favorite food item goes like this:

He supposedly was out sailing in the Gulf when he docked his boat on Cabbage Key, a small island located off Lee County's Pine Island and only accessible by boat.

Buffett headed toward The  Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant , an 80-year-old business known especially for its "bar with lots of money on the walls.

Likely hungry and looking for a place to eat and enjoy a cold one, Buffett ordered a cheeseburger that probably tasted like paradise after a few hours on the water.

This Texas Glamping Retreat Was Just Named No. 1 in the U.S. — and It Has Skyview Domes, Wrap-around Decks, and Built-in Hammocks

Loving Heart Retreats in Texas Hill Country was The Dyrt's No. 1 pick.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Award season is here. And that includes the world of glamping — a luxury take on camping with resort-style amenities, which was named “one of the fastest-growing sectors” in a recent report by Research and Markets . But with glamping spots popping up left and right it can be hard to determine the best of the best. Enter the Glampy Awards , which recognizes the year’s best "glampgrounds."

The Glampys are given out by The Dyrt , the No. 1 camping platform in the United States, and their camping community, who callout glampsites with extra “glampiness, originality and Instagram-ability.” The Dyrt also takes into account property availability and nixes any glampgrounds that have previously won a Glampy.

This year, the 2024 Glampy went to Loving Heart Retreats , a glamping property in the Texas Hill Country with safari tents and skyview, geodesic domes that are outfitted with clawfoot tubs and decks with built-in hammocks. The property is a standout example of how glampgrounds are getting creative in their efforts to marry luxury and access to nature.

“My favorite part about the rise in the popularity of glamping is the creativity,” Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt, said in a press release shared with Travel + Leisure . “Glamping is growing every year and rapidly evolving to take so many forms — Airstreams, domes, pods, cocoons, fire towers, covered wagons, cabooses. Spending time in nature is always rewarding, but glamping adds another dimension of fun and originality.”

Loving Heart Retreats has seven glampsites that are a mix of domes and tents. Both lodging types sit on a private, wrap-around deck with a built-in hammock. Inside, they’re outfitted with king-sized beds with cozy linens, a sitting area, and a kitchenette with a fridge, freezer, microwave, and coffeemaker. The attached private bathroom has a marble-top double sink, flush toilet, and a clawfoot tub and shower.

Both lodging types have a standing telescope for exploring the night sky but after dark, the geodesic dome offers a little something extra: a partially clear ceiling that provides a widescreen view of the stars overhead.

Loving Heart Retreats is situated on over 25 acres a little over an hour’s drive from Austin . The property has walking trails and an onsite pond that draws songbirds, deer, and sometimes even armadillos. In addition to being immersed in nature, guests are treated to modern comforts, including air conditioning and electricity in the units.

Both the safari tents and domes can accommodate up to four people — two adults (age 12+) and two children (ages 2-12). Rates are between $269 and $598 a night , according to The Dyrt. Up to two dogs are allowed for an additional $65 per night, per dog.

The full list of the 2024 Glampy winners are:

  • Loving Heart Retreats in Texas
