Some A-Roads have been upgraded and improved so that they have become the same standard as motorways. These sections of road have kept their number, but have now been suffixed with the letter (M), for example the A1(M), the A64(M) and the A635(M). In some cases this designation has been used by the Highways Agency to indicate motorway bypasses of an existing road.

NEWS [subcat: UK] May bank holiday travel chaos feared as Brits told to plan journeys now (SEO)

Travellers are set to face mass journey disruptions over the May Bank Holiday next weekend.

London ’s Euston Station will be closed next Sunday to all but London Overground passengers.

People looking to travel are therefore advised to check for the latest updates before planning their routes, especially if they’re headed to Scotland .

From Saturday to Monday, May 4 to 6, engineers will also be carrying out major railway upgrades across the North West of England .

Those wanting to travel between Crewe, Liverpool, Warrington, Runcorn, Wigan, Bolton, Manchester, Preston and Carlisle are therefore advised to check well in advance of setting off.

The Bank Holiday misery comes after the Easter break was marred by three days of motorway and train line chaos , when severe congestion and planned works choked many of the nation’s most crucial motorways, A-roads and rail routes.

James Dean, passenger director for Network Rail’s North West and Central region, said: ‘We know there is never an ideal time to shut the railway but bank holidays continue to be the least disruptive time for us to carry out this essential maintenance.’

NEWS [subcat: UK] May bank holiday travel chaos feared as Brits told to plan journeys now (SEO)

‘With Euston closed our advice is once again to check before you travel over the long weekend, and to plan ahead by checking National Rail Enquiries to see how your journey could be impacted.

Engineering work will further see buses replace trains between Doncaster and Darlington.

In the capital, other constructions and repairs will also cause disruption between Farringdon and Loughborough Junction, between Blackfriars and Herne Hill, and between Battersea Pier and Factory Junction.

On Sunday 5, there will be no Thameslink services running from either Wimbledon or Sutton.

The Sevenoaks service will also run from London Victoria instead of London Blackfriars.

Meanwhile, repair work between Shepherd’s Bush and Watford Junction will see the Southern service suspended between 8pm on the Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Trains along that route will then be suspended again from 9pm that evening.

Holidaymakers heading back to UK airports today may face delays, as easyJet issues a warning to travellers.

Britons flying home have been warned that the process of getting out of the airport may be more laborious than usual.

On easyJet's official website, the airline said: "We have been informed of a nationwide issue that is currently affecting all E-Gates at Passport Control in UK airports.

"UK Border Force is deploying all available resources to minimize queue times, however, there may be a delay between disembarking your plane and clearing passport control."

Britons were warned to expect delays

Queueing at airport

Electronic gates used to scan passports at UK airports were hit with a glitch on Thursday, April 25.

As a result, thousands of passengers were affected.

Early evening on April 25, Birmingham Airport said on X: "Arriving into #BHX, the @ukhomeoffice e-Gates are currently out of service due to a technical issue across the country. Please use the desks within the Immigration Hall only."

A few hours later, BHX reassured travellers: "We can now confirm that the below issue is resolved."

London Stansted also shared a similar message and later confirmed that the problem was fixed.

Last night, a disgruntled passenger at Heathrow Airport took to X: " Huge queue at @HeathrowAirport for @UKBorder. Apparently, E-gates have failed again UK-wide. #brokenbritain."

One X user agreed: "Dislike! I always dread something like this happening, especially after a long-haul flight."

easyJet offered some advice to a passenger concerned about the delays.

One holidaymaker asked on X: "@easyJet hey. I fly from Birmingham airport on Monday morning. I’ve heard about the security delays. Will bag check-in be extended to three hours before flight time or will it stay at two?"

A spokesperson from the airline responded: "Bag drop will still open two hours to departure.

While most journeys should be "unaffected", Britons may experience longer queue times.

Border Force ‘technical issues’ cause chaos at major UK airports leaving passengers stuck in queues

A nationwide Border Force outage caused chaos at several major UK airports yesterday, with “a technical issue” affecting electronic passport gates for hours.

The software outage impacted airports including Bristol, Edinburgh , Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Heathrow, with passengers describing it as a “shambles” and complaining of queuing for up to an hour as a result.

The incident was first reported by Edinburgh Airport yesterday afternoon, and a statement posted on X/Twitter confirmed: “This is resulting in longer wait times for arriving passengers . Our teams are in the arrivals hall providing support as partners from UKBF work to fix the issue.”

In response to the tweet, one passenger shared a picture of people queuing and described the situation as an “absolute shambles”. Another person complained of “zero communication” and said the area was “completely jammed up.”

It was reported by Edinburgh Live that passengers were queing for at least 45 minutes as a result of the outage. Meanwhile, a passenger affected by the outage at Manchester Airport told Manchester Evening News they’d been waiting for 30 minutes and were only halfway through the passport control queue.

Replying to London Stansted’s similar social media update during the software outage, another passenger responded: “I am indeed in the huge queue.”

At 4pm yesterday, a spokesperson for UK Border Force said: “We are aware of a technical issue affecting eGates across the country. We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and apologise to all passengers for the inconvenience caused.”

UK Border Force has now resolved the issue and eGates were up and running again at all affected airports last night.

Electronic passport gates (or eGates) are used to scan both a person’s face and their passport to confirm a passenger’s identity using biometric technology.

The Independent has contacted UK Border Force for additional information about the incident

UK weather: Four train operators warn Brits of delays this weekend as ‘gales and thunderstorms’ to spark travel chaos

FOUR train operators have warned of delays as gales and thunderstorms are forecast this weekend.

Travel chaos could hit the UK over the weekend as the Met Office warned Brits to brace themselves only hours after an Arctic blast plunged the nation into a -6C chill overnight.

Slippery conditions on the road in St Albans last week

Most of Britain will get a soaking tomorrow as rain and cloud moves northwards across the country.

That's led National Rail to issue the warning that "severe weather" may affect journeys on the Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern networks over the weekend.

A post to their website reads: "Heavy rainfall is expected on the Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern networks.

"This may affect journeys from the evening of Saturday, 27 April, until the middle of the day on Sunday, 28 April.

"Some strong winds are also expected on the South Coast, which may affect Southern services in this area.

"Please continue to check your journey before you go to the station."

The Met Office said: "It will be an uncertain start to the weekend though likely unsettled.

"A frontal system continues to push north across the UK, coupled with strong winds and possible coastal gales.

"This will likely be followed by a showery day with potential thunderstorms on Sunday and again on Monday."

The Environment Agency has issued 40 amber flood alerts across England.

But the agency said the general flood risk over the weekend is actually very low.

As the weather moves up the country, there are some sunny spells forecast for the north.

Sunday will also be unsettled and nippy before the mercury begins to rise again.

Today will be cold and cloudy for most Brits with scattered showers in many parts.

Cloud will blanket southern England , with some heavy rain falling in the south west.

But the north could enjoy a few patches of sunshine amid the general greyness.

A thick band of rain clouds will push up from the south overnight while a rural frost settles in the north .

Showers will spritz coastal areas, with slightly clearer night skies inland.

Met Office expert Alex Burkill said: "An area of low pressure is likely to deepen somewhere towards the south west of the UK today.

"There is a reasonable chance that this low will clear away towards the south.

"But some models want it to come back up towards the UK as we go into the weekend.

"If this happens, then that would bring some heavy rain spreading up from the south and also some strong winds.

"So a pretty unsettled weekend to come - but there is some uncertainty."

A UK border agent checks a lorry at a customs point

UK to delay start of health and safety checks on EU imports – report

New post-Brexit border checks ‘set to zero’ to avoid what Defra calls risk of serious disruption

The UK government has reportedly told port health authorities it will not “turn on” health and safety checks for EU imports as new post-Brexit border controls begin this month.

A presentation prepared by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) highlighted the risk of “significant disruption” if the new measures were implemented, according to the Financial Times. It made clear that the systems would not be fully ready on time.

In a move designed to avoid big delays, the government said it would ensure the rate of checks was initially “set to zero for all commodity groups”.

The border controls have already been delayed five times over fears that they could cause disruption and further fuel price inflation.

In its presentation, Defra admitted to port health authorities that “challenges” still remained within its systems for registering imports of food and animal products.

These challenges could trigger unmanageable levels of inspections, overwhelming ports, it was reported.

“There is a potential for significant disruption on day one if all commodity codes are turned on at once,” it said.

It was not made clear for how long border checks would be suspended but the presentation was said to indicate that the systems would be “progressively turned on” for different product groups.

Business organisations have repeatedly called for the introduction of the new border checks to be delayed until at least October.

The final big change will come in October, with the government requiring safety and security declarations for medium- and high-risk imports, while also introducing a single trade window, which the government says will reduce the number of forms needed for importers.

As of yet, goods coming from the island of Ireland will not require physical checks but the government has said these will be introduced at some point after 31 October this year.

A Defra spokesperson said: “As we have always said, the goods posing the highest biosecurity risk are being prioritised as we build up to full check rates and high levels of compliance.

“Taking a pragmatic approach to introducing our new border checks minimises disruption, protects our biosecurity and benefits everyone – especially traders.

“There has been extensive engagement with businesses over the past year – with our approach welcomed by several trade associations and port authorities.

“We will continue to work with and support businesses throughout this process to maintain the smooth flow of imported goods.”
