Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

You need a valid passport to enter Armenia . U.S. citizens are allowed visa-free entry to Armenia for up to 180 days per year. For visits of longer than 180 days, you must apply for a residency permit through the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visit the website of the  Embassy of Armenia  for the most current visa information.

  • Armenian law requires that Armenian citizens, including dual nationals, enter and depart Armenia on Armenian passports . Even if you naturalized in the United States,  the Government of Armenia may still consider you an Armenian citizen . Children born in the United States to two Armenian citizens may also be considered Armenian citizens. Please read the information about Armenian citizenship at the website of the  Embassy of Armenia  and also review the Dual Nationality information in the “Local Laws and Special Circumstances” section below.
  • If you possess an Armenian “special passport” (a residency permit), you still need a valid U.S. passport to enter Armenia. Border guards have refused to admit U.S. citizens carrying “special passports.” Please visit the  Embassy of Armenia  website for further details.

Borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan : Land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan  remain closed  and are patrolled by armed troops. There are intermittent armed hostilities on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

Border with Iran: See the  Iran travel advisory. The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against all travel to Iran  due to arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens. The Department of State maintains its  “Do Not Travel”  advisory, noting the “very high risk of arrest and detention of U.S. citizens in Iran, particularly U.S.-Iranian dual nationals.”

Russian Arrest Warrants: Armenia routinely shares information about foreign visitors with Russian law enforcement and security services.  U.S. citizens may be detained by Armenian authorities upon entry or exit based on Russia law enforcement or security service information.  Former and current U.S. government and military personnel with prior travel to Russia may face increased scrutiny.

Traveling Through Europe: While Armenia is not located in the Schengen area, many flights to Armenia originate in that area of Europe. If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay if you plan on transiting a Schengen country.   Review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
  • You will need sufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket.

HIV/AIDS Entry Restrictions : The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Armenia.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Natural Disasters : Armenia is prone to earthquakes and landslides.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Area and Conflict :

Following armed hostilities in the fall of 2020 and fall of 2023, Azerbaijan took control of Nagorno-Karabakh. Further military activity could occur in the region.

Crime: Crime is relatively low, and violent crime is infrequent. When police are called they routinely show up; however, they generally do not speak English. Vehicle break-ins  and  theft  are rare but are the most common crimes. Police indicate that there is a criminal group in Yerevan that targets foreigners and burglarizes rented apartments when the victims are away.

  • Matters involving  commercial and investment disputes  can take months or years to resolve as they work their way through the civil courts. The U.S.-Armenia Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) provides that in the event of a dispute between a U.S. investor and the Republic of Armenia, the investor may take the case to international arbitration.
  • Credit card fraud and ATM card skimming occurs . See the  Department of State  and  FBI  webpages for information on scams.

Demonstrations occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State and the  FBI pages for information.

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should first contact the  U.S. Embassy  at (+374) 10-494-585 during business hours and (+ 374) 10-494-444 after hours.

Report crimes and requests for emergency services to local authorities by  dialing 911 . English speaking operators are available. Also contact the U.S. Embassy to report your situation.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime .

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance. Local resources for victims of domestic violence include shelters, medical assistance, and legal aid. Victims of domestic violence may contact the Women’s Rights Center at + (374) 10-542-828 or (0800) 80-850, 24 hours a day. The  Women’s Support Center  at + (374) 099-887-808 provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and the  Light House shelter  at + (374) 93-327-834; + (374) 43-500-503 or “20-80” provides shelter and support to victims. In cases of sexual violence or domestic violence, victims may contact the Women’s Resource Center at + (374) 077-991-280 and (0800) 01-280, from 9:00 AM to midnight.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders may be unable to access areas at a distance from major cities to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Please review the State Department’s page on  Arrests or Detention of U.S Citizens Abroad.   In addition, many people accused of crimes are held in local prisons in pretrial detention for between two and twelve months with the possibility of posting bail while waiting for a court hearing.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately . See our webpage for further information.

  • Possession, trafficking, or the uses of drugs, including marijuana, are illegal . A prescription for  medical marijuana  will not protect you from prosecution. If you are arrested for a drug offense, you could face detention during the investigation and a prison sentence after conviction.
  • Electronic cigarettes and related paraphernalia may be perceived as drug related.
  • Armenia does not allow the import of various psychotropic drugs. Please review Armenia’s rules on medication at the websites for  customs  and for  health .

Customs and Exports :

  • Local officials may occasionally seek bribes to perform basic duties.
  • Customs authorities may enforce regulations concerning the import/export of items like firearms, pornography, and communications equipment. Please refer to the Armenian Customs Service for further information.
  • The export of items of historical value, such as paintings, carpets, and old books, requires advanced authorization from the Armenian Ministry of Culture . Contact the Embassy of Armenia for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods : Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also have to pay fines or give up the items if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Dual nationals :

  • Armenian legislation permits Armenian citizens to hold dual citizenship. Even if you naturalized in the United States,  the Government of Armenia may still consider you an Armenian citizen . Children born in the United States to two Armenian citizens may also be considered Armenian citizens. Please consult the Armenian government’s website on citizenship and read the  Armenian law on citizenship .
  • Armenian law requires that Armenian citizens enter and depart Armenia on Armenian passports. Individuals who are dual citizens, or could be, should consult with the Embassy of Armenia  in Washington prior to traveling.
  • Armenian males over the age of 18 are subject to mandatory military service. Penalties for evading military service include  jail time  and a  substantial fine . Young dual-citizen U.S.-Armenian men are advised to  consult with the Embassy of Armenia prior to traveling. There have been instances where dual nationals have been detained at the airport upon arrival until they can resolve their military service issues.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are  no antidiscrimination laws protecting  lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) individuals in Armenia. There are  no hate crime laws  or other criminal judicial mechanisms to aid in the prosecution of crimes against LGBTQI+ persons. Individuals face the potential of discrimination and harassment by state and private actors. The Department of State’s Human Rights Report documents that LGBTQI+ persons experienced physical violence, threats of violence, blackmail, and harassment. Police were unresponsive to reports of abuse against LGBTQI+ individuals and at times, themselves mistreated LGBTQI+ persons.

See the  LGBTQI+ travel information  page and section six of the  Human Rights Report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Although Armenia signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2007, Armenian authorities have yet to enforce it. Facilities with accommodations for individuals with disabilities are rare and, in rural areas, usually nonexistent.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: Informal taxis or mini buses pose threats to people unfamiliar with local conditions, especially to women traveling alone. There have been occasional reports of taxi drivers sexually harassing single, female travelers. See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Outside major cities, medical facilities in Armenia are limited. The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of  English-speaking doctors. Elderly travelers  and those with  existing health problems  may be at risk from  inadequate medical facilities .

For emergency services in Armenia, dial 911.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Armenia.

The risk of diarrheal disease is high throughout Armenia. Food and water precautions are recommended. Additionally, cases of  brucellosis  from consuming unpasteurized dairy products have been reported.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas . Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance

  • Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality: The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons in Armenia. It is typically at its worst in the winter, with smog and particulate pollution in or near cities. Consider the impact air pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary.

Visit AirNow  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Health facilities in general

  • Ambulance services are widely available, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • Adequate health facilities are available in Yerevan and other major cities, but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.
  • Medical emergency services at Armenian airports are not on par with U.S. airports.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions

Pharmaceuticals

  • Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Armenia Ministry of Health or The National Institute of Health to ensure the medication is legal in Armenia.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Armenia to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   The information below is provided for general reference only. Road conditions in Armenia differ significantly from those in the United States. Exercise caution when driving in Armenia. Reckless driving is common. Drivers frequently ignore traffic laws.

  • Avoid traveling at night  due to poor road conditions and limited emergency response resources. Pedestrians often cross dark streets away from designated pedestrian crossings while wearing dark clothing. U.S. Embassy employees are prohibited from driving at night outside the city limits of Yerevan.
  • Yield to aggressive drivers  to reduce your risk of being a victim of aggression. Police may seek bribes during traffic stops.
  • Winter travel can be hazardous, especially in mountainous areas.
  • Practice defensive driving and watch out for  drunk drivers , especially on the weekends.
  • Primary roads  are frequently in poor condition with stretches of missing pavement and large potholes. Some roads shown as primary roads on maps are unpaved and can narrow to one lane. Maps may be inaccurate.
  • Secondary roads  are normally in poor condition and are often unpaved. Roads may not have signs. Police and emergency medical services may take a long time to reach remote regions.
  • Gasoline quality ranges from good, at reliable stations in cities, to very poor. Do not buy gasoline and other fuels sold out of jars, barrels, and trucks by roadside merchants.
  • Drivers licenses from the United States are not valid for driving in Armenia.  For more information, please visit this website .
  • Exercise caution on roads near the border with Azerbaijan. Be aware that some portions of the road may cross international boundaries without notice. Roads may be controlled by checkpoints or closed to travelers without notice.

Traffic Laws: In case of an accident, all vehicles must remain in place and stay until the arrival of the police. Tourists should always carry a copy of their passport.

Driving regulations are often ignored by drivers, and, as a result, accidents are common. The driving culture is aggressive. Pedestrians and bicycles may not be granted the right of way.

Public Transportation: Public transportation, while inexpensive, may be unreliable and uncomfortable. Sexual assaults have been reported on public transportation. Minibuses are dangerous, overcrowded, poorly maintained, lack seatbelts, and are frequently involved in accidents. Traveling by local unregistered taxis without meters can also prove difficult if a price is not negotiated ahead of time.

See our Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of Armenia’s national tourist office website and national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight: As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Armenia, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Armenia’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Healthcare for Brits in Armenia

It’s a good idea for UK citizens to check with NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre) at least 2 months before their trip to Armenia.

They offer vaccine recommendations and the latest news on outbreaks and other health risks as well as factsheets that contain useful information for staying healthy during your travel.

Note that the government of Armenia does not offer free medical care for Brits in Armenia. This means that without travel insurance, you’ll have to pay for medicines, doctor and hospital fees out of pocket. And hospitals or medical centres may want to see proof of ability to pay upfront.

As you might imagine, these unforeseen expenses can be significant, which is why it’s important to ensure that you get sufficient travel insurance before you leave on your trip.

If you take prescription medication for an existing health condition, the NHS recommends that it’s also a good idea to get in touch with the embassy of Armenia for assurance that you can safely bring those medicines with you inside the country.

You’d also want to make sure that you bring a note from your doctor verifying that you need the medicine to manage an existing health condition.

You can check the NHS website for advice on pertinent vaccinations and health checks for more information.

What About Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

  • Many medical conditions covered

Over 75/Serious Medical

  • Cancer, Heart Conditions, Diabetes, Stroke, Epilepsy and many more
  • Up to a high level of severity and even a terminal prognosis
  • chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Mental health conditions

As is usual with UK travel insurance, you need to disclose any pre-existing medical condition you have to your policy provider, unless you have been told specifically by your insurer that you do not need to declare that condition.

While this means that you may have to pay more to obtain travel insurance for Armenia – although not all pre-existing conditions result in an increase in premium- , it’s better than falling ill during your travel (related to your pre-existing medical condition) and being denied coverage.

Insurance providers typically offer free screenings for thousands of medical conditions and provide ample coverage to offset the cost of repatriation and medical care while abroad.

While it’s unlikely that you’ll get injured or fall victim to a crime if you confine your activities to safer regions in the country, it’s best not to take any chances and obtain a suitable single or multi-trip travel insurance policy before your departure.

Make sure you disclose all pre-existing medical conditions that you are required to do so when applying for travel insurance for Armenia. Doing so would help ensure that you don’t run into any problems should you need to file a claim.

The human body is an incredible work of evolution and as such there are plenty of things that can go wrong in both the short and long term.

For that reason it can often be difficult to understand what constitutes a medical condition that you have to declare to your travel insurance provider.

However, in general, the insurers’ questions will tend to follow the same general lines, such as:

Have/are you or anyone in your party:

  • taken any prescribed medication, or received any medical treatment in the last 2 years;
  • attended a medical practitioner’s surgery, or hospital or clinic (out-patient or in-patient) in the last two years;
  • awaiting medical treatment or investigation;
  • been diagnosed by a medical practitioner as suffering from a terminal illness.

All medical conditions you have must be disclosed as well as any previous medical conditions if they could have an impact on your current health.

So, while it is vitally important to declare what you need to declare, your policy provider will let you know if your pre-existing condition is not a factor for your trip cover.

For example, here at Emerald Life, we don’t require clients to disclose their HIV status for as long as they meet the following conditions:

  • They have been on antiviral treatment for no less than 3 months.
  • They have not been advised to switch to a different/new type of antiviral regimen.
  • If their CD4 count is above 350 or they have been advised by a doctor that CD4 monitoring is not necessary.
  • They have an undetectable viral load or less than 50ppm.

Note that non-declarable conditions can vary from one policy provider to another. It’s ultimately up to the insurance company to decide which pre-existing medical conditions are exempted from disclosure and set pertinent conditions for the exemption. However, Emerald leads the field on some of these.

What to Look For When Shopping for Armenia Travel Insurance

At this point, you probably already have an idea of just how important it is to obtain Armenia travel insurance before you travel to Armenia (whether multiple or a single trip cover).

This begs the questions — what factors do you need to keep in mind before buying travel insurance?

Well, the answer doesn’t need to be all that complicated. After all, the purpose of travel insurance is to give you peace of mind while you enjoy the sights and wonders that Armenia has to offer. For that, you can focus on a few essential factors:

Repatriation and Medical Cover

  • Medical Up to £10 Million

The most important part of any travel insurance policy is emergency medical expenses cover. Typically ranging from £5 million to £10 million – the higher in our case – this covers your costs if you become ill or injured abroad and require medical treatment.

Medical expenses should include repatriation cover so that if your condition means you have to return to the UK urgently then there is cover for transporting you along with any necessary medical equipment and staff. Unsurprisingly, these costs can be staggering.

Before you leave for Armenia, it’s important to ensure that your travel insurance policy offers enough coverage to pay for emergency medical services and repatriation back to the UK.

Here at Emerald Life, we provide coverage of up to £10,000,000 with our Armenia travel insurance.

Travel Insurance Armenia Cancellation and Curtailment Cover

Silver - Up To £1000

Gold - Up To £3000

Platinum - Up To £7500

Silver - Not Covered

Gold - Up To £2000

Platinum - Up To £5000

If you are ill or injured before you travel then you may have to cancel your trip. Some policies will also cover you if a close relative is ill or injured, or your home is burgled, and you have to cancel as a result.

If you expect to make multiple trips to Armenia in a given year, you can probably secure a better deal if you sign up for annual multi-trip travel insurance.

An annual policy will help you save time since you don’t have to reapply before every departure. More importantly, annual multi-trip insurance cost is bound to be cheaper than obtaining numerous single trip policies over the course of a year.

Armenia Travel Insurance Luggage Cover

Luggage can get lost during transit, and if that happens, it’ll be a major inconvenience in your travel plans. That’s why you need travel insurance that will reimburse you for the trouble should it happen.

For luggage delays of more than 24 hours, Emerald Life offers baggage cover which serves as compensation for the inconvenience and covers the cost of essential replacement clothing and toiletries if your baggage is delayed on your outward journey, up to the amount specified

If the luggage is lost (missing for more than 21 days), you’ll be paid the amount stipulated in the luggage cover for the accidental loss, damage or theft of your baggage and personal effects, up to the amount specified.

Travel Insurance Excesses and Exclusions

Silver - £100

Platinum - £35

Silver - £500

Gold - £150

Platinum - £0

While it can be tempting when buying travel insurance to just look at the final price, it is important that you check any excesses you have to pay.

That is because some cheap policies will have very high excesses which means any claims could be very expensive despite having the insurance. Sometimes excesses are so high it might not even be worth claiming.

Therefore, make sure you buy a Armenia travel insurance policy that balances a good price with reasonable excesses. Also, there may be other exclusions that reduce the premium precisely because payouts are limited. If you need travel insurance, then it is advisable to make sure that you have the best cover you can afford.

Most travel insurance policies will also include different excesses for different types of claims and you can find these in your policy documentation, but generally the medical excess is the most significant.

Do You Need Insurance to Travel to Armenia?

It can be argued that the real question is — can you afford not to have Armenia travel insurance when you leave for Armenia?

Again, tourists have no free access to healthcare services when visiting the country, and private medical care can be costly.

Armenia travel insurance should cover the cost of medical treatment if you fall ill or become injured during your travel.

While no one expects to get sick or become injured while holidaying in Armenia, accidents can happen. If things go south, it’s always helpful to know that you have travel insurance to rely on.

Is travel insurance mandatory for obtaining a tourist visa for Armenia?

When planning a trip to Armenia, it is important to understand the visa requirements and whether travel insurance is mandatory. While travel insurance is not a specific requirement for obtaining a tourist visa for Armenia, it is highly recommended.

Travel insurance provides financial protection and coverage for unexpected situations that may arise during your trip, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. Having travel insurance can give you peace of mind and ensure that you are financially protected in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Additionally, some countries may require proof of travel insurance as a condition of entry. So, it is advisable to have travel insurance to protect yourself and your belongings during your trip.

When choosing a travel insurance policy, make sure to carefully read and understand the terms and coverage. Look for a policy that provides comprehensive coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellations, emergency evacuations, and baggage loss or delays.

It is also important to check whether your travel insurance policy covers the entire duration of your stay in Armenia. Some policies may have restrictions on the maximum number of days of coverage or may not cover certain activities or destinations.

In conclusion, As travel insurance is mandatory for obtaining a tourist visa for Armenia, it is highly recommended to have it for your own protection and peace of mind. Make sure to choose a comprehensive policy that suits your needs and covers the entire duration of your trip.

My wife and I live in New Zealand and my wife (who is Armenian) is flying her parents over here to NZ to stay with us for 5 months. We are looking into travel insurance for them and was wondering what companies in Armenia would be good options for them to get a policy?

Her father is 71 and her mother is in her late 50's and they are staying for 5 months, we would like to compare prices between a few companies if possible.

Insurance agencies in Armenia do not provide services to people of pension age to my knowledge. And I would suggest to go with local, NZ insurance agencies rather than Armenian. There were cases that Armenian insurance policies were invalidated abroad.

@Gira: Very good suggestion. Which, by personal experience, also applies for a Canadian travelling in the US. It was much cheaper, with a lot more options, for me (at 77, last year) to purchase « emergency medical » insurance in the US than in Canada!.

This year, travelling in Armenia, I chose to gamble (at 78 but in good condition) and took no insurance! But keeping my fingers crossed every time I take a cab here! Ha ha ha!

Is it mandatory to have travel insurance to enter Yerevan?

' class=

Insurance is not required.

Visa cost is fixed regardles of the point/way you get it. It is about USD 30 for 120 days stay. I strongly advice however to get is online through http://evisa.mfa.am portal to avoid unnecessary and long queue in the airport. It takes max 3 working days to get the visa online.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is a Keeper: TV Review

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Popular on Variety

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.
