Dubai is a fantastic holiday destination: it has the world’s tallest skyscrapers, indoor theme parks and is a shopper’s paradise. However, August is mid-summer in the UAE and Dubai’s second hottest month. Is August a good time to visit Duba?

August is a good time to visit Dubai if you plan to be indoors with air-conditioning and avoid the midsummer heat and humidity.

It’s off-peak for tourism, so flight and hotel deals are available. Dubai was built for the heat, so there’s a wide variety of indoor shopping and entertainment venues.

The combination of desert and ocean means Dubai faces sweltering heat and sandstorms in summer. However, don’t let the weather put you off enjoying this incredible tourist hot spot. Let’s look at why August is a good time to visit Dubai.  

How Hot Is Dubai In August?

Visiting Dubai in August means a holiday in a desert country in mid-summer: temperatures soar, humidity rises, and sand blows everywhere. There is no chance of a refreshing thunderstorm.

Few people can stand outside temperatures of 110-114⁰F (43-47⁰C). It’s as hot in the shade as in the sun , and temperatures drop only a couple of degrees at night.

Outdoors is not appealing and, frankly, can be dangerous. By law, laborers must take a break between 12 and 3 to avoid heatstroke, sunburn, and dehydration, so follow their example.

It’s so hot that outdoor pools are cooled , not heated. Restaurants close their outdoor seating areas for a couple of months, and attractions like Global Village and Dubai Miracle Gardens close for the summer.

Outdoor activities like swimming, beach volleyball, sea-kayaking, dune-bashing, and BBQ in the desert aren’t the best choice for August.

Do You Like Indoor Vacations?

Don’t let the hot weather put you off from visiting Dubai in August, so long as you’re happy to spend most of your vacation indoors.

The city was designed to make life as comfortable as possible in the heat, so everything is air-conditioned .

All public buildings, including hotels, mosques, shopping malls, museums, restaurants, movie houses, and banks, are air-conditioned, so once you’re indoors, it’s pleasantly cool.

Taxis, trams, and the metro are all air-conditioned so that you can travel around the city in relative comfort. Walking from place to place isn’t a great idea , but taxis are reasonably priced.

In fact, you should pack a light jacket, wrap, or cardigan, as you can feel chilly when inside.

With its location in the Arabian desert, it's no surprise that Dubai has only two settings on its thermostat: warm and hot. In the months when much of the Northern Hemisphere is shivering, Dubai makes a great getaway for winter sun, but in the sweltering summer months, anyone who is brave enough to stay in the city is hustling between air-conditioned patches of cool.

Here's a month-by-month guide for the best time to visit Dubai .

High season: November to April

Best time for outdoor urban adventures

When much of the Northern Hemisphere is bundled up in hats and winter coats, Dubai is blossoming. Moderate temperatures bring in major festivals and events, and al fresco dining lasts late into the night. Accommodation rates are high. Outdoor activities and excursions into the desert are best done at this time of year.

Shoulder season: May, September and October

Best time for quiet beach holidays

The days are hot, and the nights are balmy. Because the winter crowds have disappeared, these months are good for quiet beach holidays, with sea temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C). Pleasant temperatures also mean it's still possible to camp in the desert.

Low season: June to August

Best time for budget travelers and indoor shopping

During the hot and humid summer months, travelers on a budget can more easily book into Dubai five-star's accommodations thanks to steep discounts. Life moves indoors, and summer sales lure shoppers into the air-conditioned malls.

January is a blissful month in Dubai. When much of the rest of the world is suffering post-festive season doldrums and icy conditions, the daytime temperatures in Dubai average a pleasant 77°F (25°C). January is still Dubai's coldest month, so bring a light jacket for evenings out. Dubai's weather in March might be heating up a fraction, but it is still near perfect in this action-packed month, with warm seas for swimming and enough of space on the sand. The spring weather in Dubai is still warm rather than blistering, but school breaks mean you’ll see more tourists around the Easter holiday. In May, temperatures in Dubai can nudge 95°C (35°C) or more, and most visitors have cleared out in anticipation of the summer heat wave. Beach clubs and indoor shopping centers provide welcome relief during the day.  Key events: Al Gaffal Dhow Race

Summer has arrived, and it's already blisteringly hot outside. Life shifts indoors to air-conditioned malls and museums, and swimming in the sea or a hotel pool feels like sitting in a bathtub. Key events: Dubai Summer Surprises

July is the hottest month of the year in Dubai, and it's a scorcher, with average temperatures of 105°F (40°C). Flight prices and hotel rates drop significantly. You can really cool down at the city's snowy indoor slope, Ski Dubai . Key events:  Eid Al Adha in 2021 and 2022

Dubai is still roasting hot in August. Tourist attractions are generally empty, especially toward the end of the month when schools start up again.

Dubai's searing summer temperatures are slowly starting to drop, and it's a good time to be by the sea. Excursions into the desert are possible again, and the balmy evenings lend themselves to stargazing among the sands.

Temperatures in Dubai have started to cool nicely, although you can still expect humidity and toasty warm days in early October. The cooler nights are lovely for a stroll along the Dubai Canal and for dining outdoors. Key events:  Diwali in 2022

Dubai’s average daytime maximum temperature in August is 41.5°C (106.7°F).

It’s nothing but hot, hot, hot as the outlook in August. Even when you think it can’t get any hotter there are some furiously muggy hot days thrown in with highs reaching 48.8°C (120°F) – the “feels like” temperature which accounts for humidity and wind chill as well exceeds 50° C (122°F)!

There’s little relief overnight as temperatures may only drop as far as 30.6°C (87°F). The average throughout the day in August is 35.3°C (95.5°F), the absolute peak heat of the year in Dubai. You will get an abundance of sunshine in August, averaging 10.5 hours+ a day, but you are likely to be sheltered inside during those hours.

Dubai Sea Temperature in August

In August you should expect sea temperatures on average of 33.1°C (91.6°F). The minimum and maximum don’t vary much from 31.6°C (90.1°F) through to 34.7°C (93.2°F).

You will find very little relief from an ocean swim in August. Unless you are jumping in the early evening, it is too hot, and the water does not cool much overnight. You are best taking advantage of a lovely chilled resort pool when you’re visiting Dubai in the summer.

On the plus side, you can find heavily discounted hotel deals at this time of year as resorts still look to fill their rooms despite the heat. Outdoor recreation activities though are likely to be off the table until at least the end of September.

Other weather patterns that are common in Dubai in August

You will also notice an increase in humidity and the air temperature in August. This leads to a very muggy heat.

Often the city looks quite hazy in August; sandstorms are not uncommon at this time of year.

Although August is historically the driest month in Dubai and rain is very unlikely, a brief thunderstorm is not totally unheard of – no need to pack the brolly just in case, though!

What should I pack for August in Dubai?

In August, you will need to be prepared for the extremes – outside temperatures are searing hot so pack breathable cotton materials that don’t stain easily with sweat marks. Long flowing dresses and loose, long sleeve shirts work best, along with plenty of antiperspirant!

You will definitely want some sort of sun protection for your head, sunglasses and your 50SPF sunscreen – even if you will only briefly be outside.

At the other end of the scale, in August, you will want to be prepared for the brutal force of air conditioning indoors! A cardigan or pullover should suffice in most situations. If you are still thinking of braving the Dubai desert in the evening, closed-toed shoes are recommended to protect your feet against the scorching sands that only cool a little at night.

The Best Times to Visit Dubai for Beautiful Weather, Lower Prices, and Smaller Crowds

These are the best times to go to Dubai, according to local experts.

Dubai is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Middle East, known for its contrasting mix of cutting-edge architecture and time-honored traditions. The best — and most popular — time to visit Dubai is from November to March when temperatures are pleasant and outdoor activities, like visiting bustling souks and cafes, abound.

Summer months get a bad rap because of the extreme heat, but Kelvin Cheung, chef and partner at restaurant and cocktail bar Jun’s, finds joy in all seasons. “During the winter months, my son and I bundle up and build sandcastles in the sun, while in the summer we jump in Jacuzzi-temperature waters in the early morning or late evenings, searching for sea creatures.” 

The shoulder season is a much-overlooked time to visit Dubai, offering milder temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) and less-crowded streets. Founder and editor of " Near + Far ," an independent travel magazine for travelers to the Middle East, Isabella Sullivan says, “I genuinely believe Dubai is a year-round destination. Of course, winter has the best weather, but I love the heat, and the shoulder months are my favorites, as you don’t need a jacket at night.”

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Smaller Crowds 

Many visitors fall in love with Dubai because of the people — the city is home to a diverse group of residents and attracts tourists from all over the world. That said, during the high season, Dubai can get so crowded that it becomes difficult to get tickets to attractions or score reservations at the hottest restaurants. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to visit anytime from April to October. This includes the shoulder and low seasons, when residents often leave the country and tourists are few and far between. Plus, fewer crowds coincide with more favorable accommodation rates. It’s also the perfect time to see the sunset at the Burj Khalifa, get a photo at the Dubai Frame without throngs of people in the background, or finally nab tickets to the Museum of the Future.

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Good Weather 

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the best time to visit Dubai for good weather coincides with a high number of tourists. November through February is a beautiful time to visit, as temperatures range from the low 60s to the high 70s. “In the winter, the weather is so fantastic,” Sullivan says. It's also a perfect time to experience the city’s diverse topography. “With consistently beautiful weather in winter, you can be at the beach, in one of the world’s most dynamic, futuristic cities, and then into the rolling, peaceful dunes of the desert all in a matter of hours,” adds Sullivan. The weather during these months usually allows for T-shirts during the day and long sleeves or a light jacket in the evening.

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Lower Prices 

The summer months of June, July, and August — when many people have fled the country because of the heat — are when you will likely score the best deals on Dubai hotels. It’s also the perfect time to explore the plethora of indoor attractions Dubai has to offer, from numerous aquariums and museums to the sprawling Mohammed bin Rashid Library. “I think only recently has summer evolved into a season that’s worth visiting. You can get a great hotel deal during summer, and sitting by the pool or swimming outside is entirely possible," Sullivan says. "The city isn’t crowded, so you can get a booking at the most coveted restaurants or beach clubs. I think summer in Dubai will only get more attractive as the years go on."

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Festivals and Events

Festivals and events occur throughout the year — in hot, warm, and mild temperatures — so the best time to visit depends on your specific interests. Sullivan says she admires that Dubai goes out of its way to create things for people to do. One example is Dubai Summer Surprises, a city-wide shopping festival offering a lineup of steep discounts and special offers, plus concerts and other events, during the low season.

Many enjoy visiting in December for one of the city's most-anticipated holidays, UAE National Day, when Emiratis celebrate the anniversary of the country's independence with fireworks, cultural performances, falconry displays, and more. Although we're in the throes of summer now, it's never too early to plan that winter vacation. When temperatures start to drop and the days become shorter, you might start dreaming of warmer destinations, sunshine and beaches. Dubai is a popular destination for these reasons, especially in the winter months when it can get dark around 4 p.m.

Temperatures, prices and crowds can vary enormously throughout the year in Dubai, so here are our top tips for when to visit and when to avoid the city.

Best times to travel

You can expect consistently pleasant weather between November and March -- daily maximum temperatures will be in the upper-70s, which is warm enough to enjoy the beaches and those amazing luxury hotel pools, as well as getting out to explore the sights without having to constantly duck into air conditioning. Overnight, the temperature drops to the low-60s, which is comfortable for sleeping.

Mid-December to the end of February is peak period, so while the weather is great, Dubai can be really crowded and hotel rates rocket. The months of June, July and August have searingly hot temperatures in Dubai. Think an average high of 106 degrees Fahrenheit every day, with temperatures not dropping below 86 overnight. Temperatures can even hit 117 degrees Fahrenheit in these months. It's likely to also be quite humid, which can drain your energy even more.

Most tourists will find these temperatures far too hot to even step outside (let alone lie by the pool or beach), which may be a big reason you are visiting. If you are willing to stay inside the entire time, you can expect cheap accommodation because there are so few other tourists.

The month of Ramadan, which changes dates each year but will be from April 12 in 2021, is a period where eating, drinking and smoking in public is banned during daylight. This means many businesses close during these times, which can be difficult for tourists who are not observing Ramadan themselves.

Al Mamzar Beach Park : this is my favorite park and beach, for me the best thing about it is its palm trees that transport you to faraway places and serve to put you in the 'shade' (or at least try to!). Al Mamzar Beach Park : this is my favourite park and beach, and for me the best thing about it is the palm trees that transport you to faraway places and serve to put you in the 'shade' (or at least try to!). Holidaymakers have been warned of travel chaos in Dubai , with heavy downpours causing delays and cancellations throughout United Arab Emirates airports.

The UK Foreign Office has told tourists heading to Dubai to be aware of ‘severe disruption’ due to the extreme weather, which saw the country battered by the most rain it has recorded in 75 years.

Over 142mm of rain fell on Dubai International Airport – the second busiest in the world – over the last 24 hours, more than the average annual amount of 94.7mm – and flooding in the transport have left thousands of Brits struggling to get home .

Some airlines have diverted flights or cancelled them altogether, while authorities have urged anyone planning to travel to Dubai to exercise caution.

If you’re heading to the UAE destination, here’s what you need to know.

Can I travel to Dubai right now? Latest advice after airport floods

Whether you can get to Dubai at the moment will depend on your airline, but even if your flight is still running, it’s likely your travel plans will face disruption.

In a statement, Dubai Airports explained: ‘It’s challenging for departing guests to reach the airport and arrival guests to leave the terminals due to the significant flooding and road blockages, resulting in limited available transport options.

The authority claims recovery will ‘take some time’ but urges guests to check the status of their flight directly with the airline before heading to the airport, and to allow ‘significant extra travel time’.

A further announcement on X made last night (April 17) read: ‘We advise you not to come to the airport, unless absolutely necessary. Flights continue to be delayed and diverted. Please check your flight status directly with your airline.

‘We are working hard to recover operations as quickly as possible in very challenging conditions.’

This morning, check-in for Emirates and flydubai has reopened at Terminal 3, and Terminal 1 arrivals have restarted. However, it’s still being stressed that only those with confirmed bookings or departure confirmations from their airline should go to the airport.

Access roads around the airport are still being cleared too, so although availability of taxis is improving, it’s likely it’ll take longer than usual to get to and from the airport.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advised British travellers: ‘Check with your airline before traveling. Contact FCDO if you are in the UAE and in need of emergency support.’

Your rights if Dubai flights are cancelled or changed

If you’re already at the airport, restaurants are open and accepting meal vouchers (which will be issued to those experiencing delays of more than four hours). You may also be provided with accommodation or transport if you’re re-routed to the next day.

Due to the major disruption, this may not have been possible, so the CAA recommends passengers keep the receipt for ‘reasonable’ costs (like food and accommodation) they pay for themselves and claim for reimbursement later.

If you have been delayed for more than five hours and no longer wish to travel then you’re entitled to a refund from the airline, and if you missed your connection flight because your first flight was delayed, you are also entitled to a flight back to your original departure point.

However, once you take a refund or choose to travel later than the first available flight, the airline no longer has any obligation to provide you with food, drink or accommodation.

Under UK law, airlines sometimes have to provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late, but this depends on what caused the delay. Since these disruptions aren’t the airline’s fault, they fall under  ‘extraordinary circumstances’, meaning you aren’t eligible for compensation.

Dubai plans to move busy international airport to a $35B new facility within 10 years

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state's second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches “within the next 10 years” in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's announcement marks the latest chapter in the rebound of its long-haul carrier Emirates after the coronavirus pandemic grounded international travel. Plans have been on the books for years to move the operations of the airport known as DXB to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central which had also been delayed by the repercussions of the sheikhdom's 2009 economic crisis.

“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” Sheikh Mohammed said in an online statement. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global center.”

The announcement included computer-rendered images of curving, white terminal reminiscent of the traditional Bedouin tents of the Arabian Peninsula. The airport will include five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, the announcement said. The airport now has just two runways, like Dubai International Airport.

The financial health of the carrier Emirates has served as a barometer for the aviation industry worldwide and the wider economic health of this city-state. Dubai and the airline rebounded quickly from the pandemic by pushing forward with tourism even as some countries more slowly came out of their pandemic crouch.

The number of passengers flying through DXB surged last year beyond its total for 2019 with 86.9 million passengers. Its 2019 annual traffic was 86.3 million passengers. The airport had 89.1 million passengers in 2018 — its busiest-ever year before the pandemic, while 66 million passengers passed through in 2022.

Earlier in February, Dubai announced its best-ever tourism numbers, saying it hosted 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023. Average hotel occupancy stood at around 77%. Its boom-and-bust real estate market remains on a hot streak, nearing all-time high valuations.

But as those passenger numbers skyrocketed, it again put new pressure on the capacity of DXB, which remains constrained on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways.

Al Maktoum International Airport, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from DXB, opened in 2010 with one terminal. It served as a parking lot for Emirates' double-decker Airbus A380s and other aircraft during the pandemic and slowly has come back to life with cargo and private flights in the time since. It also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has a vast, empty desert in which to expand.

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed noted Dubai's plans to expand further south. Already, its nearby Expo 2020 site has been offering homes for buyers.

“As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow,” Dubai's ruler said. “It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

However, financial pressures have halted the move in the past. Dubai's 2009 financial crisis, brought on by the Great Recession, forced Abu Dhabi to provide the city-state with a $20 billion bailout.

Meanwhile, the city-state is still trying to recover after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the UAE, which disrupted flights and commerce for days.
