Travellers Rest

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Waited for over an hour to be served the meal ! Eventually said they had run out of the Sunday Lamb Dinner! Was offered the more expensive Crispy Lamb, which when arrived was delicious, but the vegetables were cold. When asked if was all OK,... explained they were trying a new system!! No discount offered! Very sad because we had rode our cycles all morning, and were very hungry. Extremely disappointed. More

Really good covid19 procedures in place, track and trace details taken(although reliant on people filling it in) tables well spaced, plenty of sanitizer. Enjoyed haddock and chips, OH had daily special of Lamb's liver and vegetables. Well presented and plenty of it - only downside... no room for pud! As there was only two of us we had no complaints about service however the table of 5 next to us appeared to have quite a gap between their meals being brought out. It would have been helpful to have a sign up saying find a table before ordering as it would have saved us queueing up twice. Intend to visit again before our holiday ends. More

Parents are nearby at laneside caravan park, about 5 minutes walk away on the main road. 1st time we have been in and from the outside to the inside, then to the beer garden it was such a lovely country pub. It was a nice... sunny day so sat outside and went in to order I shared with my wife the sweet chilli chicken with cheddar and chips at £7.75, others had chilli beef nachos for 2. Also 1 had the ploughman’s which had far to much cheese. Food was good but staff a bit not with it and not too happy. More

First visit to the pub for food. Called at 2pm to book a table for 6 people at 6pm Sunday evening. Told didn't need to book as wouldn't be busy. Arrived shortly after 6pm, ordered drinks for 6 and took menu's from the bar, chose... food and went to order to be told kitchen was closed. This was around 6.25pm. They offered desserts only which wasn't what a hungry family with two children called in for. Having ordered drinks we couldn't just leave to go elsewhere. Website said food until 7pm. Explained to bar tender this was poor as I had called to check earlier. Not interested in the slightest. Asked to speak to a manager. No one bothered to come over. Bar tender just ignored us and stayed out of sight. Genuinely felt like we were just a massive inconvenience and they would prefer to have no customers. Would have spent £100+. Pubs closing left, right and centre. Awful experience. Why would I ever bother to go back? More

We have thoroughly enjoyed our short break at the Travellers Rest. The staff are very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We requested a room that allowed our dog to be with us .. which we were very happy with. We ate... in the pub every night and there is a good selection of well cooked food. I would recommend the nachos.. but you need a hearty appetite if you order them as a main course. We were able to do several lovely walks out from here.. including Win Hill and it’s only a short drive to Millers Dale. Covid regs are in place .. and I think it is a great idea that hand sanitisers are placed at the entrance to each toilet.. We are looking forward to a return visit… thank you very much More

We were planning to go and eat here every day with our 4 children during our camping stay, however on the first day we went and, despite the sign saying if we have food allergies speak to them, they could not accomodate our 9 year... old sons dairy and egg allergy apart from to offer gammon and chips. He is 9 not 70 so that is not on his preferred foods list, and he certainly would not have been happy eating it for a week! We were also disappointed that despite there only being one other couple dining, the chef didn't come and discuss options but just kept sending his waiter forwards and backwards to say the various things that were not suitable (sausages, chicken nuggets etc). Therefore we decided to eat elsewhere for the week. More

We stayed in a B+B nearby and we decided to try our luck going to this pub for dinner with little expectation. We ordered a steak pie and a pineapple pork and surprisingly they were cooked at a very high standard, and with a huge... portion. The place is clean and even the sauces were individually packed. The place is pretty big and we did not feel very noisy and enjoyed our dinner in a very peaceful environment. No hesistation to recommend to anybody going to go to Hope and wish to have a nice meal. Wow what a lovely pub, 19 of us turned up without a booking on Sunday, no problem with tables all in a area by the windows. All ordered separately & with in 15 minutes they all came out together. Large portions & other than the... vegetables being a little bit hard all the plates went back empty. Had a lovely warm welcome & a large car park & the menu has something fir everyone from small plates, toasties or full Sunday lunch. Highly recommend More

Extremely friendly pub which is dog friendly. Whilst the choice of food is a little limited the quality and quantity of food is more than acceptable. The snacks were very good as were some of the specials. As a pub in a tourist walking area... it is good to see that they are extremely dog friendly . More

Stayed on a local campsite and walked into Hope for food, but 1 pub was packed and the other didn't do food due to a refurb. Decided to walk to the Travellers, and glad we did. Food excellent, well cooked and decent priced, good selection... of drinks. Nice beer garden if you had kids and plenty of space. Will be back when visiting again More

We stayed at the Travellers Rest for a 3 night stay. The basic en-suite room was spacious and clean with a comfortable bed. Despite the quadruple glazed windows the traffic noise can be quite intrusive. The breakfasts were plentiful and nicely cooked as were the... bar meals in the evening. Would recommend the Steak Pie. The waitress staff were helpful and pleasant. We would definitely recommend the Travellers Rest as long as you can tolerate the traffic noise. More

Having passed this place several times my wife and I thought we'd give it a go Friday night. The place was empty, not a good sign. Staff were very friendly, and quick to let us know food was finishing soon.... pretty early really. My wife... ordered gammon, I went for red coconut curry. Gammon itself was very average, my curry I believe was coconut based???. We eat it ,as we were very hungry but won't be returning. More

The pub was used by the Family both to stay and for a funeral "reception". Staff were superb and nothing too much trouble. buffet was excellent and a good selection of food plus "blow the diet" cakes. Drink prices reasonable in line with current costs.... I didn't use the rooms but highly recommended by the Family who stayed there. More

Avoid at all costs.. terrible service (the waitress shouted at us as we left for being together at Christmas!), booked for a family Christmas for 15 with approx 3months notice to arrive to 4 separate tables. We had to put the tables together ourselves. We... spoke to James the chef way ahead of booking about our food requirements and was reassured we could be more than catered for. Arrived and only 1 vegan meal available. The only option was to share 1 meal between 3 or have a dried up jacket potato. Just awful! All party (vegan or not) found their meal dried out, overcooked & bland reheated food. Arranging a family meal for parties living in York, Sheffield, Derbyshire and Nottingham with busy lives, means we only meet once a year and this was the experience! Avoid at all cost! No apologies, no offer of refunds..but nothing would have compensated for this extremely disappointing Christmas family meal. More

We visited on Monday evening for dinner. The Travellers Rest is a very large pub with great potential. Unfortunately when we were there, there were very few other guests. With a lot of empty tables, sparse furnishings and bright lighting it felt a bit soulless... and empty. It felt more like a youth club than a pub. The menu was basic and food disappointing. No salmon available so we ended up with a poor shepherds pie, microwaved to within an inch of its life, and a jacket potato. Very disappointing, we won't be back. More

OUR HISTORY

Under the leadership of the first pastor, Rev. Sam Stinson, The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church was formed in 1876 by a Sunday school and prayer meeting group. Rev. William Tillman (Father Tillman), pastor of Wheat Street Baptist Church, organized the church in May 1876.

Some of the former pastors include Rev. T. T. Gholston, Dr. Martin L. King Sr., Dr. Sandy F. Ray, Dr. J. W. Tate, Dr. Leonard Ashbury Pinkston and Dr. Hubert Floyd Shepherd.

Rev. Hubert Floyd Shepherd was extended the call to pastor the church in 1957. The church’s membership flourished in the Edgewood community of Atlanta, Ga. so much so that December 1973 the ministry moved from 119 Mayson Avenue to 2589 Tilson Road, Decatur, Ga. The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church continued to grow and on Sunday, March 20, 1994, a ground breaking service was held to mark the start of construction on a new building. Two years later, on Sunday, September 29, 1996, the church relocated and dedicated its 8 million, 2,200-seat sanctuary at 2600 Whites Mill East (later renamed H.F. Shepherd Drive) in Decatur, Ga.

On March 26, 2003, Rev. H. F. Shepherd retired as pastor and The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church (The House of Hope Atlanta) began its search for a new pastor. A pulpit committee was formed and commenced an eight-month search for a new pastor. In November 2003, God sent a Spirit-filled man in the person of Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., and on December 21, 2003, he was installed as the 22nd pastor of the church. Under Dr. Smith’s leadership, the church has grown phenomenally in membership, attendance and finances. By Dr. Smith’s fifth year as pastor, the membership had more than quadrupled. In 2009, the church purchased and relocated to a 60 acre, 7 building campus, that features a 7,000 seat Neo-Gothic cathedral. Additionally, a myriad of capital improvements, enhancements and investments in the community have been made. With this acquisition, the church is well-positioned for expansion and Kingdom building opportunities.

As its name suggests, The House of Hope Atlanta offers hope to those desiring respite from the trials and tribulations of life and guidance to those earnestly seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. The church welcomes those in metro Atlanta and beyond to worship God, share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others and execute the business of the Kingdom with excellence.
