What travelers are saying

"Fantastic tour of Oman. Oman is absolutely stunning and people are very friendly. The camping part is quite basic and would recommend that you just camp in the desert and not on the beach. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took great pride in looking after us. This is my fourth trip with Explore now and would highly recommend them. Only eight people in my group and we were all single travellers. If you are on a budget then make sure you have around £60 to give for tips. This goes to all the drivers, chefs at both camps and the tour leader. One negative experience was going to see the turtles on the beach at night. When we arrived at the hotel who organise this event, we were met with a couple of other tourists expecting to see Turtles as well. The place was full of flashing neon lights and we asked our tour guide to take us back to hotel as it looked tacky, badly organised and unethical."

"We were booked for an Italian Adventure in Capri and were booked at the Camp Santa Fortunata in Sorrento which turned out to be a nightmare. We paid for an upgrade and the cabin we were placed in had no air conditioning, windows had no mosquito net, the bathroom had no toilet paper. I have contacted them for a refund, of at least the upgrade that we paid, and they have refused. We ended up having to book a hotel in Sorrento because we just couldn't sleep at the cabin they placed us in. We hated the accommodation and their communication was poor and underserved to their clients."

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"My experience with TruTravels has been one of the best travel experiences to date. I was a little concerned about having a small group - but the tour leaders have made every activity fun and engaging. I would definitely say they are friends. The organisation and local knowledge was great, they were great fun whilst remaining professional and in control. The nights out in Canggu were great, getting to meet the other tour leaders and Tru staff meeting the other tour groups is a great idea. I really cannot stress enough how much of a great trip I've had with TruTravels. From booking, to pre-tour communications, through to the last 10 days - it has been well organised, managed and delivered by amazing guides. Thanks so much to Rianna, Marta and Jonny for their enthusiasm throughout the tour, their concern for when I was sick and generally for everything they did to make this an amazing Bali Experience. Much love for the tour guides!!!I would definitely recommend a trip with TruTravels!!"

Croatia Tour Selection Trips

  • Traveling with a knowledgeable guide in Croatia can provide invaluable background on the long history of the country, as well as its more recent history in the Bosnian War of the early to mid-1990s.
  • Look for Croatia tours that combine both the dramatic coastal cities and islands with excursions into the interior of the country; Zagreb is well worth a visit.
  • Be aware that traveling in Croatia requires climbing some steep steps to walk on Dubrovnik’s city walls and more climbing to visit Roman ruins, medieval castles and other sites, many of which were built on top of high hills for defensive purposes.
  • Because of the hilly terrain in some places, bus rides can induce motion sickness.  If you’re prone to that malady, carry along pills to combat the sensation.

Why Visit Croatia on a Tour?

Where else can you get stunning coastlines, teal waterfalls, historic old towns, and delicious food? Croatia is a top destination in Europe because of its affordability and rich culture. However, getting around Croatia can be a little bit difficult with transportation and a growing tourism scene.

Croatia is in the rebuilding process after the Croatia War of Independence and the most common mode of transportation is by local or charter bus, not train. If you are traveling through the busy areas, many of those buses are fully booked and could delay your travels.

Visiting Croatia on a tour allows you the comfort of pre-booked travel and inside access to top destinations. There are specialized tours to Croatia providing behind the scenes access and allowing you to skip the long lines.

Additionally, Croatia is a great place for a road trip, but parking isn’t always easy. Many of the top attractions in Croatia are the old towns on the coast. Many of these towns you cannot park in or do not have easily accessible parking.

Croatia Cruises

Another way to visit Croatia is by cruises. Croatia is a top country for those looking to enjoy a cruise vacation. Up and down the Croatian coastline you can find stunning old towns and sheer white cliffs. Also, Croatia has over 1,000 islands you can visit on your cruise.

Cruises to Croatia have a variety of boat types and tour lengths. There are some tours that use the large cruise ships and dock in main ports like Split, Dubrovnik, and Hvar, and there are tours that use smaller, sailing ships.

If you are visiting Croatia by a land tour, you can also book day or week cruises to the islands. These tours are typically on smaller boats and you can rent them for however long you wish. This is a great way to visit the smaller or farther out islands that can’t be reached by the large cruise ships.

Who Will Enjoy Visiting Croatia?

Croatia has something to offer every type of traveler. Those interested in history will really enjoy the old towns on the Dalmatian Coast. Many of these cities are centuries old and are some of the most picturesque villages in Europe.

Speaking of pictures, photographers will love the views of Croatia by both land and sea. Croatia’s coastline is characterized by towering white cliffs and green forests. If you venture inland, you will come across teal lakes, green mountains, and hill villages.

Travelers who are looking to visit Europe on a budget will also enjoy traveling to Croatia. Croatia is one of the more expensive countries in the Balkans; however, compared to Western Europe and the United Kingdom, it is very affordable.

Croatia Currency

Croatia does use its own currency. Croatia began using the Kuna in 1994 when Croatia gained its independence after the fall of Yugoslavia. Even though Croatia is part of the European Union, they currently still use the Kuna.

You can exchange your money before you leave your home country, but it’s recommended you do in smaller amounts. There are plenty of places throughout Croatia where you can exchange or take out money from ATMs. But make sure to switch back to your own currency before leaving, you may get a better rate in Croatia then in the U.S.

There are some places in Croatia, like Dubrovnik and Split, that may take Euros. Since these are top tourist destinations, some shops and restaurants will accept them. However, it’s best to use the Kuna for easier conversion.

Is Croatia Safe?

Yes, Croatia is very safe. Conflict ended in Croatia in 1995 and violent crime is very rare. However, visitors are advised to always safeguard your possessions. Like most top tourist destinations, petty crime like pickpocketing can be common.

Sailing in Croatia

If you love being on the water, and are a bona fide skipper, a nautical tour of Croatia may be your dream come true. It is not only possible to sail Croatia -- jumping from island to island on the calm, sapphire Adriatic aboard a gorgeous sailboat -- this is one popular form of guided tour.

Whether you restrict yourself to Croatia, or decide to explore all of the Balkans, traveling by sailboat is a relaxing and intimate experience, the ideal aquatic version of a Croatia vacation.

Croatia Cycling and Bike Tours

If you want access to some of the most beautiful, scenic bike trails on the planet, consider going on a cycling tour of Croatia’s Dalmation Coast . Your guide will be able to save you the hassle of meticulously planning your routes, packing food, maps, and foreign dictionaries, and allow you to focus on the physical activity and your breathtaking surroundings. Not only this, but on a multi-day escorted bike tour, your guide is likely to take you off of the mainland to enjoy some island views.

What to Know Before Going on A Croatia Bike Tour

  • Weather : Croatia has a typical Mediterranean climate. This means, in the summer, expect weather in the high 70’s. Luckily, Croatia is not prone to rain, although you may want to pack a small waterproof jacket just in case it does, or the wind leaves you a little chillier in the early morning -- you will spend a lot of time outdoors on a bike tour!
  • How should I be? This largely depends on what level of tour you embark on. Stride can help you look for easier cycling tours, but make sure to reach out to tour providers for more information about what kind of endurance you need.
  • Croatia roads: The roads in Croatia are usually well paved, and as you will be traveling on the scenic routes, you should not encounter much vehicular traffic.
  • What’s the difference between guided and self guided tours? Guided tours usually include a lot more than a self-guided tour. You will not only have a person with you to help or answer any questions, but you will often benefit from services such as various included meals, transfers to and from the airport, and van support.

Best Times to Visit Croatia

While there really is not a bad time to visit Croatia, each season comes with its own significance. When you are planning your vacation, it’s important to take into consideration certain seasonal associations like weather, festivities and limitations.

Winter in Croatia varies by region. At its coastline, the region has a mediterranean climate and remains relatively warm. Dubrovnik is perfect for those who love celebrating the holidays but cannot stand the cold. Dubrovnik’s Christmas Fair celebrates with live music, local foods, and performances. For those looking for something sweet, Opatija hosts their annual Chocolate Festival every December.

Moving inland, the weather gets much colder. Croatia’s central and northern regions usually have snow by the end of December. Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, also has a Christmas Fair in Ban Josip Jelačić Square where you can celebrate with live performance and music.

Plitvice National Park can be visited in the winter, but it should be noted that bad weather conditions can sometimes cause the rangers to close off certain parts of it. Before you make the journey out to the park, make sure you check its official website for any weather related updates. When the conditions are mild and pleasant, the park truly looks like a winter wonderland.

Spring time weather throughout Croatia is relatively mild and warm. It is also far less busy with tourist. In central Croatia, the weather varies slightly between warm and cool temperatures. This is largely due to frequent winds that blow prominently during this time of the year. At its coastline, there are also frequent winds, but the weather is much warmer.

Throughout Croatia, there are numerous festivals that celebrate the blooming vegetation. In April, Dubrovnik’s FestiWine has become a popular activity for locals and visitors alike.   Zagreb has the Floraart International Garden Show and International Street Festival every May. And the Flower Fair of Zadar every April is a must-see.

With the recently melted snow, Croatia’s national parks are in prime conditions. Its waterfalls are in full force, the landscape has an endless array of shrubbery, and the wildlife is full of mothers raising their young.

Croatia is mostly warm and sunny during its summer months. However, occasional rain is common, especially in central and northern Croatia. The height of Croatia’s tourism season is also within these months. If you want to miss the crowds, then go in late May or early June. By July and August, it is at peak season for tourism.

But, there are some pros to traveling during tourism high season. The weather is usually constantly warm. This means that nothing will be closed off at any of the national parks. It is also good for getting around. Because of the influx of visitors, most bus and boat routes add more times to their schedule.

Fall in Croatia gets the tail end of the summer craziness. The weather is warm, but it isn’t unbearably hot. Most destinations and attractions are slightly less crowded.

Plus, most cities are celebrating the autumn season in some festive way. By the coastline, the water is still warm and there is plenty of sunshine. The national parks are just as lovely and transportation is still easily accessible.

If you are looking for a quieter and more relaxing trip, then Croatia in the fall is a good idea.

Best time to visit croatia.

Croatia's peak season runs between July and August, with temperatures in the high 60s or mid 80s on the coast. But in this region, you can expect plenty of sunshine from May to October, which are the best times to visit if you want to take advantage of Croatia's beautiful beaches and islands. The inland areas are also hot in the summer but can get cold in the winter with low temperatures and snowfall. Winter on the coast is milder and frequent rain can be expected.

Culture and customs

Generally, Croatians are very proud of their country and cultural heritage. While this may not be obvious in everyday life, the Slavic heritage of Croatian people becomes more evident during festivals and national holidays, where cities and villages come to life with traditional costume, folk music and feasts. While most of Croatia's population are Roman Catholic, there are also groups of people who identify as Serbian Orthodox, Muslim, Protestant and Jewish. Having endured war, hardship and frequent earthquakes, the people of Croatia have a great amount of national pride and connection to their country and family. It's quite common for extended families to live together and children to remain close to their parents well into adulthood. Time for leisure and family is highly valued, particularly along the coast, where many offices end their day at 3pm.

Eating and drinking

Croatian cuisine   is heavily influenced by its surrounding countries. Separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea, cuisine along the coast tends to have more of a Mediterranean flair. Fish and seafood are integral to many coastal dishes, such as brodet (fish stew) and crni rizot (black risotto made with squid). Homemade pasta and olive oil are also dietary staples. Further inland, you’ll find heartier dishes with Austrian, Hungarian, and Turkish influences such as cobanac (a goulash-like stew) and kulen (paprika-seasoned sausage).

Foodies will definitely want to visit Istria – home to award-winning olive oil, wild asparagus, rare white truffles and excellent wines – which has gained an international reputation as a foodie destination.

Croatians enjoy their beer (Karlovacko and Ozujsko are two of the most popular local brews), but they love their kava (coffee). Take a cue from the locals and spend a morning people-watching at a cafe over a kava – it’s a Saturday morning tradition in Zagreb. Rakija (brandy) is the spirit of choice, with many restaurants offering a small glass before a meal. Another favorite is Pelinkovac, a must-try bitter liqueur.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with  Bosnia and Herzegovina ,  Slovenia ,  Hungary ,  Serbia  and  Montenegro , Croatia benefits from more than 5,000 km of coastline that spans along the Adriatic Sea. In addition to the mainland, Croatia also has many islands, some inhabited, some not. Croatia's terrain is very diverse and varies from flat plains to low mountains and highlands, limestone karst cliffs, wetlands, lakes and forests of cypress. Nature reserves and wetland areas are home to large populations of migratory birds, deer, bats and bears. Visitors will also see much of the land is used for agriculture with vineyards, lavender fields, olive groves and orchards being prevalent in rural areas. Croatia's cities, while developed, have managed to maintain a high level of charm with cobblestone streets, ancient housing, historic squares and heritage buildings being preserved and still used by the current population.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the land now known as Croatia has been occupied by humans since the Stone Age. Croatia's geographical position in  Europe  allowed a great amount of influence from neighboring regions, with tribes and people from different cultures and groups making their mark. The first Kingdom of Croatia was formed in 925 but by the 12th century Croatia had formed a union with Hungary, with a Hungarian King instated as leader of both territories. During the 15th century, Croatia lost territory to the Ottoman Empire and, in later centuries, once again came under Hungarian rule. Evidence of these many cultural influences can be seen in the architecture, cuisine and archaeological ruins of contemporary Croatia.

Recent history

Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia formed a union in 1918 to create the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but the occupation of Axis forces during World War II lead to the creation of the Independent State of Croatia, which only lasted a couple of years during the war. By the end of the war in 1945, Croatia had become a Socialist Republic (within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, together with Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro), with the constitution of 1963 attempting to alleviate tensions surrounding the balance of power between Serbians and Croats. By 1980, after the death of President Tito (founder of modern Yugoslavia), economic and political difficulties resulted in a near collapse of government. What followed was years of conflict, polarity and political turmoil. The referendum of 1991 resulted in an overwhelming vote for independence, with Croatia and Slovenia declaring independence from Yugoslavia in June of the same year. Much armed conflict followed and lasted until 1995, leading to great loss of civilian life and displacement, creating large populations of refugees. However, the last two decades have been a time of peace and reconciliation for the people of Croatia and the country even joined the European Union in 2013.

"In Croatia, we enjoy an amazing lunch in a village on Hvar island, where guests sit on the terrace of a medieval stone house that's surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Our hosts use local cooking techniques for octopus, lamb and veal, while everything is accompanied by a regional red wine"

Gasper, Travel Director

Explore the capital city of Zagreb

Find the Croatian capital in a picturesque natural setting by the edges of Medvednica Mountain and the Sava River. With the history of Roman times in its foundations, Zagreb will gift you simple days spent exploring forgotten monuments. Don’t miss the artworks of MSU gallery and the daily farmer’s markets of Kaptol.

Take a romantic stroll on the promenade in Opatija

Somewhere between the Habsburg-era villas and the Adriatic Sea, lies Opatija and its scenic promenade. Follow the path, known locally as the Lungomare, for 12-kilometers from Preluka to Lovran, stopping to rest and admire the outlook along the way.

Take in the natural beauty of Plitvice

Be awed by the beauty of Plitvice National Park as we move away from the coastline. Here, wooden walking tracks curl past waterfalls and teal ponds covering 295 square kilometres of forest reserve. Nature's beauty is on full display at Plitvice’s 16 lakes.

Climb the medieval city walls of Dubrovnik

Experience the city best known for its 16th century Old Town. After following the fortress walls, it'sthe quiet moments watching the sun drop behind the Adriatic that will take your breath away. Be sure to enjoy sunset over an apéritif and fresh octopus and appreciate the daily routines of this city.

Take a memorable day trip to Hvar

One of the Adriatic’s most idyllic locations, Hvar is a must-visit. Immerse in the island’s slow pace of life, only interrupting time beside the ocean for a stroll through the town square or a trip to the island’s renaissance-era Cathedral.

Our top 5 things to do in Croatia

Whatever your travel style, Trafalgar's Croatian trips will delight you. Find slow island days by the shores of Hvar and endless history within the walls of Dubrovnik, before exploring the lesser-known beauty of Plitvice National Park.

Museum of Arts and Crafts

Zareb’s Museum of Arts and Crafts sits wrapped in an ornate yellow building, presenting over 160,000 objects dating from the 4th-20th century. From watches to musical instruments and fashion accessories to photography, the breadth of objects is beyond impressive.

Ivan Meštrović Gallery

Standing in honor of the late multi-disciplinary creative, Ivan Meštrović, this gallery is a pride of Croatia. Though the artist was best known for his sculpture work, you will find furniture, drawings and various design works, with majestic pieces spanning bronze, marble and wood.

Croatian Museum of Naïve Art

Found in an unassuming building in the heart of Zagreb, the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art impresses with the talents of many local and international artists. Showcasing works that span into the late 1980’s, you will do more than just observe antiquities and distant eras in this Croatian museum.

Best museums in Croatia

Prepare for the unexpected in Croatia’s collection of museums. From obscure bronze sculptures to time-pieces of days gone by, our trips will delight the curious traveler with plenty of Croatian culture.

Translating literally to ‘under the lid’, ispod peke is a cooking technique involving an open wood fire and an oversized pot. Various meats, vegetables and flavors boil beneath the terracotta lid at extreme heats. Devour this heart-warming dish to appreciate slow cooking methods of days gone by.

Despite its simple, tar-like appearance, crni rižot is a delicious dish with an abundance of flavor. Written in English as black risotto, the ink of cuttlefish and squid are the highlights of crni rižot, often finished with a generous serving of parmesan cheese.

Served alongside pasta or gnocchi, the beef stew of pašticada will satisfy your hunger after a long day of exploring. Dating back to the 15th century and playing an important role in special occasions, sampling this meal is a Croatian history lesson in every mouthful.

Best food in Croatia

Tour with Trafalgar and let us reveal to you the secret pleasures of Croatia's food. A blended cuisine inspired by Italy, Turkey and the Mediterranean that is a treat for the taste buds.

What to pack for Croatia

People packing for a tour

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The colossal tale of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R.R. Martin inspired the HBO mega-series Game of Thrones. With many scenes from this show filmed in the Croatian towns of Dubrovnik, Trsteno and Split, you can feel a deeper connection to Croatia by flipping through the pages of the book.

A hunger for seafood

Fresh seafood is offered in abundance by Croatian restaurants, usually caught fresh that day from the cool depths of the fringing coast. From fried squid stew with polenta to clams, mussels and lobster, a hearty appetite for seafood will be well satisfied in Croatia.

Whilst Croatians love a morning herbal tea, other tea varieties are not so common. If a certain cup of tea is part of your daily routine, consider packing some from home rather than hunting them down.

Sun protection

At an average of 2715 hours of sunlight per year, Croatia is sunnier than most Australian cities. A hat, many swimsuits and sunblock will all prove essential when visiting the pearl of the Adriatic.

Ginger tablets

Though the Adriatic usually offers a pleasant, mellow time at sea, occasionally Croatia sailing tours are bothered by rough waters. Rather than dosing up on medication, come prepared with ginger tablets. This natural alternative often stops sea-sickness before it even begins.

Whether you choose to explore the historic charm of Dubrovnik and the golden sand beaches of Split or embark on an activity holiday along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, our selection of small group holidays to Croatia will create memories to last a lifetime. Here are some of our Croatia tour highlights.

Also known as the ‘pearl of the Adriatic' the medieval town of Dubrovnik is one of Croatia's crown jewels. Almost completely destroyed by shelling in the Siege of Dubrovnik, UNESCO and the local people gracefully restored this fortified town. With restoration, Dubrovnik retains a cheerful atmosphere and authentic charm. Wander around the city's timeworn stone walls on our Cycle the Dalmatian Coast trip for far-reaching views across a patchwork of red-terracotta roofs encased by the azure-blue ocean and jagged coastline. Step back in time as you wander through Split's maze of narrow cobblestone streets on our Croatia Discovery Tour . Discover pre-Romanesque churches, Gothic chapels and alleyways lined with rustic townhouses adorned with faded emerald-green shutters. Browse eclectic boutiques, delve into hidden galleries and stop for a bite to eat in a hole-in-the-wall cafe. Head to the seafront for a gentle stroll along the Riva Promenade and savor fresh seafood in one of the waterfront restaurants, before relaxing on the golden sand beach lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters and playing a game of Picigin with the locals.

turkey and croatia tours

Located on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, Split is a captivating city that blends ancient history with a vibrant modern atmosphere. Its centerpiece is the remarkable Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive Roman ruins in existence. Split's Old Town, with its labyrinthine streets and charming squares, revolves around the palace. At the palace, visitors can explore underground passages, marvel at the grandeur of the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and soak in the enchanting ambiance. Beyond the historical allure, Split offers a bustling waterfront promenade, a thriving cultural scene, and nearby natural beauty, including Marjan Hill's panoramic views and the inviting beaches along the Adriatic Sea.

Standing in stark contrast to the Mediterranean-esque cities along the coast, the Croatian capital city of Zagreb wows with its abundance of 18th and 19th-century Austro-Hungarian buildings and architecture. Nestled between the slopes of Mount Medvednica, this cultural hub offers a wealth of architectural gems, historical landmarks, and artistic treasures. The Upper Town, with its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, features the iconic St. Mark's Church and the impressive Zagreb Cathedral. The Lower Town boasts lively squares, bustling markets, and vibrant café culture. Zagreb also houses an array of world-class museums, showcasing art, history, and science.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Follow timber boardwalks around a labyrinth of aquamarine lakes in Plitvice National Park, Croatia's largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sixteen lagoons of shimmering topaz water sit among lush verdant forests and cascade over steep limestone cliffs, as pearly-white spray glistens in the sunshine and rainbows beam over the veils of water pouring into the ethereal plunge pools below. These dams of limestone crystals have formed over many millennia, and new chutes frequently burst through the travertine banks, creating a plethora of over ninety waterfalls to explore in this ever-evolving landscape.

Krka National Park

Another of Croatia's most popular national parks, Krka National Park is located in southern Croatia. It is renowned for its series of breathtaking waterfalls, including the iconic Skradinski Buk, which tumbles over a series of travertine barriers.  The park's lush greenery and crystal-clear turquoise waters create a picturesque setting that feels like something out of a fairytale. Visitors can explore the park's network of wooden walkways and hiking trails, immersing themselves in the tranquility of nature while enjoying the captivating sights and sounds of rushing waterfalls and diverse wildlife.

Dalmatian Coast and Dalmatian Islands

Sail between sun-soaked islands, swim in beautiful bays of crystal-clear water and wander through historic cities of red-roofed buildings and grand monuments along the Dalmatian Coast. The southernmost stretch of coastline along Croatia's Adriatic Coast, the Dalmatian Coast is home to several of Croatia's most legendary cities, Dubrovnik and Split, as well as 79 scenic islands that you can hopscotch between on an island-hopping adventure. The Dalmatian Islands, scattered along the coast, provide an idyllic escape with their pristine beaches, secluded coves, and quaint fishing villages. Hvar Island is famous for its vibrant nightlife, stunning lavender fields, and elegant Venetian architecture. Korčula Island, the birthplace of the legendary explorer Marco Polo, enchants visitors with its charming old town and vineyards.

English is widely spoken in Croatia, especially in popular areas like Dubrovnik, making it easy to talk with locals and navigate the country. However, it's always polite to learn some basic words and phrases of Croatian, both to be respectful of the locals and to aid in better communication. Even if you're on a guided tour, picking up some beginner Croatian phrases helps you better connect with the local culture.

Five days to a week is usually enough to do all the highlights, plus have some free time, in a particular region or city. But if you plan to explore multiple regions in one trip, you'll likely want to plan for up to two weeks of travel.

For visits of under 90 days as a tourist, you don't need to get a visa to come to Croatia as a US citizen.

As a small country, it's easy to get around Croatia using its well-connected public transit system of buses, ferries, and trains. Ferry routes are a popular way to get between coastal islands and travel along the coast, while buses and trains connect most of the country. Croatia's compact size also means you can thoroughly explore entire regions by foot or bike on a walking tour or a cycling tour. If traveling with Explore, all of your local transportation is included in the trip cost unless otherwise specified.

Traveling with a small-group tour, you can forget about the logistics and planning of travel and just get to enjoy the experience. With a small group size to preserve the intimate, personal nature of bespoke tours, you'll have a designated guide on-hand to help you discover all that Croatia has to offer.

With accommodations, activities, and transportation all arranged, you'll also have a seamless and smooth travel experience. Finally, you have the opportunity to make lifelong friends on small-group trips, creating unforgettable memories with people that go from strangers to close friends in a matter of days.

Apart from minor theft and pickpocketing in major cities, Croatia is a very safe country for all kinds of travelers. Violent crime rates are extremely low, and you'll encounter welcoming and kind locals throughout the country.

Currently, you don't need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to travel to Croatia. However, masks are still required in some indoor public spaces.

Croatia or Turkey: Which Mediterranean Getaway Is Better?

croatia or turkey

Southern Europe is blessed with sparkling holiday destinations and Croatia and Turkey are just two of them. Both complete with beach resorts, ancient history, and great climates, they may seem alike, but there’s more to these vacation meccas than meets the eye, and choosing between them is no easy feat.

Located at the crossroads of western and southeast Europe, the Balkan nation of Croatia is best known for its medieval history, scenic pebbled beaches, and party islands . Turkey also occupies a unique geographical position, partly in Europe and partly in Asia, but its transcontinental quality isn’t the only thing that has helped to put it on the map. Empire, art, religion, and cuisine all contribute to Turkey’s idiosyncratic appeal.

Comparing everything from the costs to the food to the entertainment on offer, our guide is here to help you decide between these two countries once and for all. Will it be Croatia or Turkey for your next Mediterranean getaway? Let’s find out.

Table of Contents

Croatia or Turkey: Ease of Travel

Croatia ferry

The first thing to consider before any trip is how you’ll get there, and how you’ll get around. During the peak summer months, you should have no trouble getting to Croatia or Turkey, but the ease and price of travel all depend on where you’re coming from.

Turkey is the much bigger country of the two, with half of the nation straddling Southeast Europe, and the other half, Southwest Asia. In fact, Turkey is around 14 times bigger than Croatia and has 35 international airports. While this means there are plenty of points of entry, it can also mean that getting around will take longer.

You can fly direct from pretty much anywhere in Europe to Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Dalaman, the most popular tourist spots in Turkey. However, if you’re coming from western Europe, or across the pond, it could take a few hours extra in the air and a few extra dollars to reach them.

Croatia only has seven large international airports in contrast, but they’re conveniently located along the Dalmatian coast, near the capital of Zagreb , and on the Istrian Peninsula. The number of entry ports shouldn’t hinder travel in Croatia, thanks to its smaller size, but with so many islands to visit, you might find yourself having to hop on a ferry before your journey is over.

Both countries are well covered by public transport like long-distance buses and trains. However, you might find yourself having to journey much further distances in Turkey thanks to its sheer size.

What pits Croatia ahead of Turkey is its connections to the rest of Europe. Turkey might be connected to mainland Europe, sharing borders with Greece and Bulgaria, but Croatia is bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, and Montenegro, while also being within a few hours’ drive of Italy, Austria, and Romania. Croatia is an easy choice at the end of a European road trip or interrailing adventure, and much closer to western Europe.

Winner : Croatia

Croatia or Turkey: Beaches

croatia or turkey beaches

After travel, it makes sense to look at two of the biggest draw factors to both Croatia and Turkey – the beaches. Croatia is one of the most lusted beach destinations in the Mediterranean. The mainland coast from Istria to Dubrovnik stretches for 1,700 kilometers, while its offshore archipelagos and picturesque islets amass a further 4,000 kilometers of coast, making Croatia home to the most indented shores in all of the Mediterranean.

Croatia is most famous for its pebbly coves and deep sparkling waters on the edge of jagged rocks, which make the perfect swimming locations. You’ll find some softer sands at Sakuran Beach and the iconic cone-shaped cape at Zlatni Rac, but the water is so inviting that the rocky shorelines characteristic of the Croatian coast doesn’t matter.

Croatia’s magical islands and hidden pine tree-lined beaches are best explored from the Adriatic and boat charters are a popular way to enjoy Croatia’s coast in the summer months. Croatia is also a huge destination for water sports, with windsurfers hailing from all around Europe for the perfect conditions. Still, it’s hard to compare with Turkey’s 8,000 kilometers of coastline, bordered by four different seas. Turkey might be better known for its distinct culture and ancient empires, but that only makes the dynamic beaches more impressive.

To the west, Turkey’s coastline laps both the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Turkey’s waters are also home to around 500 islands and islets with spectacular white sand beaches, jagged mountains, and rolling dunes. One of the most beautiful beaches is Kaputas, between Kalkan and Kas on the Mediterranean Coast in southwest Turkey. It is set beneath two forested cliffs at the edge of Kaputas Canyon. Patara is another top contender, flanked by sand dunes on one side and the warm turquoise waters of the Turkish Riviera on the other.

Turkey’s most popular beach resorts can be heaving with tourists in summer, and well into the shoulder seasons, with Turkey’s year-round warm temperatures. While the hotel-lined beaches and noisy water parks can be off-putting, Turkey is brimming with diversity. With so much coastline to explore, the resorts can be avoided and you could visit a new beach every day for a month and still not see it all.

Winner: Turkey

Croatia or Turkey: Food

Turkish food

Although they have their similarities, the culinary traditions of Croatia and Turkey is where these two destinations divert. Croatia’s cuisine is a melting pot of European influence. Thanks to its location on the Balkan Peninsula, its food has long been infused with Italian and Slavic elements, but also some Greek influences from the south.

The result? Croatian cuisine is hearty and comforting, with a lot of seafood the closer you get to the coast. Istrian food is distinctly Italianate, with pasta and risottos adorning every menu as well as truffle-infused oils and delicate fisherman’s soups. Inland, near the capital, the cuisine is more quintessentially Balkan with stuffed vegetables and meaty stews, while, on the Dalmatian Coast, you’ll find red snapper, citrus flavors, and salty local cheeses.

Still, Turkish food has a lot more to offer. While being influenced by surrounding nations, Turkish food is also distinctly its own. The cuisine can be traced back to the Ottoman empire and is engrained in the heritage of the country. European and middle eastern culinary techniques from the ages were meshed together to create Ottoman cuisine.

Kebabs might be one of the most globalized and well-loved elements of Turkish cuisine, but the nation is a lot more than its meat skewers. Rich ingredients, abundant spices, and intensive labor all go into Turkish cooking. Dinner is an important affair in Turkey and has a lot of components. In fact, even breakfast is enjoyed in mezze form and you’ll enjoy multiple vegetable dishes, meaty stews, legumes, and rice at every meal.

Turkish food is more iconic and dynamic than Croatian food, and even though it’s more globalized, you haven’t tried the real flavors of Turkey until you’ve visited the country. Each region has its own variations, whether it’s seafood-heavy Mediterranean favorites you’re after or hearty lamb stews in the mountains.

Winner : Turkey

Croatia or Turkey: Nightlife

Cappadocia lights

Turkey’s nightlife is mostly isolated to the European side, but this still encompasses a vast portion of the country and the resort towns couldn’t be better for a bit of hedonism. Cities like Antalya are dotted with thumping discos, elegant lounges, and low-key bars. Most of the nightlife on the Mediterranean coast is tailored towards tourists and might be lacking in authenticity, but local crowds still enjoy the nightclubs and you can party until the sun comes up in the summer months.

Istanbul is where to go if you really want to enjoy Turkey’s nightlife like a local. You’ll find everything from late-night shopping to raucous clubs, grungy bars to live local music, and always a magical atmosphere that isn’t diluted by tourist crowds. The center of the nightlife in the capital is Taksim square, where you can savor a lively meal accompanied by Turkish dancing, before lounging at a rooftop bar and finishing in a basement jazz café.

Still, Turkey can’t compete with all that Croatia has to offer. Croatia is small but mighty and prevails as one of Europe’s premier nightlife destinations . From the bustling capital with its cheap drinks and energetic student population to the sun-soaked islands overthrown with international DJs and festival-goers in the summer months, you can find something to do wherever you go.

Split and Hvar are two of Dalmatia’s party hubs. The nightclubs blast all genres of music, while the sultry beach clubs, graced by A-listers, are the perfect places to enjoy a sunset cocktail.

Winner : Croatia

Croatia or Turkey: Cost

Ice cream in Dubrovnik

If you’re still undecided on which country gets your vote, the difference in price might just clinch the deal. Historically, neither Croatia nor Turkey has been known as a particularly expensive holiday destination. While fancy resorts and seafood meals can ramp the costs up in both countries, you can still visit either on a budget .

In the current economic situation, Turkey could be decidedly cheaper for a lot of things, but it’s not as simple as that. In 2022, Turkey is in the midst of an economic crisis, with the Lira having crashed. This means food, accommodation, and even flights are very affordable by European standards. For example, a meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant in Croatia would cost you around kn300, that’s €40. Yet, the same three-course meal, without alcohol, would set you back just TKN300, the equivalent of around €16 in Turkey – less than half the price.

The same can be said for all of your expenses in Turkey. The average price for a budget double occupancy room in Croatia is around kn295 (€30), while the same room could cost just TKN173 (€10) a night in Turkey. On average, consumer prices are 56 percent higher in Croatia than in Turkey, with groceries costing 60 percent more in the Balkan nation, and restaurant prices as much as 100 percent higher.

Nevertheless, this isn’t to say Turkey should be your immediate choice. Croatia might not be the shoestring destination it once was, but it sells the western European dream for a discounted price. Even Croatia’s most expensive cities like Dubrovnik and Zadar can be as much as 30 percent cheaper than equally popular destinations in Italy, France, and Spain. For what Croatia offers, it’s still an affordable dream, and Turkey’s unstable economic situation isn’t anything to revel in. That said, if you’re looking for a true budget option, Turkey is the undoubted front-runner.

Winner : Turkey

Croatia or Turkey: Weather

Coastline in Turkey

Both Croatia and Turkey benefit from temperate Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers and mild winters. Turkey’s climate might have some subtropical features along the southern coast, but things are very different in the north and it can even get much colder than Croatia, depending on the season.

Croatia is home to some of the sunniest destinations in Europe , with average summer highs reaching 86 degrees Fahrenheit in July. The coldest month is January, with an average low of just 45 degrees Fahrenheit across the country. However, the Dalmatian coast is sun-soaked all year, and even in the depths of winter, you can expect highs of 55 degrees.

Summer in Turkey is just marginally warmer on average, with August highs hovering around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mediterranean coast experiences similar weather to Croatia’s sunny shorelines, but areas on the black sea coast in Turkey experience annual snowfall most years, and temperatures often dip below freezing.

Turkey is much bigger than Croatia and so the climate is decidedly more diverse. Although their average summer highs are on par, Turkey has some much hotter destinations, like Cizre in the south, which is no stranger to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Antalya is also one of the warmest regions in the country, with highs above 60 degrees Fahrenheit in January, making it perfect for some winter sun.

Whether you’re not ready to say goodbye to summer, or you’re after snow-capped mountains and underrated skiing, Turkey’s temperatures mean there’s something for everyone at every time of year.

Sailing Croatia - Split to Dubrovnik Tour

Sailing Croatia - Split to Dubrovnik

This was an outstanding trip. I highly recommend it if you like sailing and lots of activities, learning about local food and culture and meeting new people. The skipper, Nickolus, was excellent. I’m an active senior and I was able to participate in all the activities offered, in part, because Skipper Nick was so skilled in facilitating our group. Individuals in our group were amazing. This trip just clicked. The weather and location was exceptional.

Zagreb to Dubrovnik: Parties & Plitvice Lakes

The itinerary was great! Would have loved an extra night in Hvar. The night in Plitvice allowed us plenty of time to explore but any longer would have been too long as there wasn't much else around aside from the lakes. Would have loved a stop at Krka as we passed so close by but did not have the time to return in our own time. The hostel in Zagreb did not have aircon, so was very hot and hard to sleep as we went in the middle of summer but we were pleasantly surprised with double hotel rooms in hvar and plitvice considering it was a budget hostel tour. The included boat cruise in Hvar was amazing and did not feel budget or cheap at all.

Croatia Sailing Adventure: Dubrovnik to Split Tour

Croatia Sailing Adventure: Dubrovnik to Split

Excellent experience. Good skipper and boat. I loved the way you can explore all the nice port cities of Croatia. Your bed is only a short walk away from all the taverna's and central areas.

It was an amazing trip. Definitely in my top 3 holidays and now feeling so depressed going back to reality

Premium Split to Dubrovnik Tour

  • Island Hopping

Premium Split to Dubrovnik

I very much enjoyed seeing the beautiful Croatian coastline. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and seemed to have a real love for his country. My main criticism was that there were frequent incidents where things such as guides in the different areas were not included in the tour, so it felt like we were often paying for services that I would have thought would be part of the overall tour. I would have preferred to have paid more money up front than to have had the frequent requests for additional money.

Croatian islands cruise + Land tour with Plitvice - from Zagreb

Fantastic Tour with Nature Trips. Marko offered us a free upgrade to the Deluxe Superior ship perhaps due to lack of passengers. The ship was brand new, with Jacuzi at guests' disposal. The common areas are large and very clean. The fact is we had a spacious room on the upper deck of the ship with a window and a view of the ocean! Stunning! Excellent dishes served by the chef on board the ship. We really enjoyed the visit to the Plitvice lakes and the consequent possibility of combining the tour of the interior of Croatia with that of its fantastic islands. Brilliant customer service offered before and during the tour. Highly recommended

Cycling Croatia\'s Dalmatian Coast Tour

Cycling Croatia's Dalmatian Coast

Tour Leader Emnha, and Tommy, the driver were both excellent. The route was at times challenging, but with their encouragement and support, all participants were capable of each day's ride. Time was allowed to meet everyone's interests, including sightseeing, swimming and enjoying the environment.

Croatia Cruise Southern Dalmatia - from Split Tour

Croatia Cruise Southern Dalmatia - from Split

A+ was full so we had to downgrade to an A level ship. At first, looking at the size comparison of the two ships, I was disappointed at the size of our ship. However, I quickly learned to enjoy the ship. Ther is only a max of 20 travelers on board, so by the end of the cruise you knew everyone and were exchanging contact information. Also, because of the size, the crew gets to personally know you and your preferences. Breakfast was your basic continental but lunch was tasty and plentiful. The pricing for drinks were normal not inflated. The only downside were bunk beds and no air conditioner and the rooms were very small. However, you don't spend much time in your rooms. Despite that I would still book again. One warning, when you get into port at night, you tie up next to other boats and they can be rather noisy. If you are our age ..in our 60's... if you are young you may enjoy the loud music from other boats or your boat may be a noisy boat. Inquire on ages of passengers before booking.

4-day Split to Dubrovnik One-way Cruise - Classic Plus above-deck, 20-35s Tour

4-day Split to Dubrovnik One-way Cruise - Classic Plus above-deck, 20-35s

Fantastic trip! All of the tour staff were very friendly and helpful. Boat was clean and well-stocked. Upstairs deck great for lounging. The trip was a perfect mix of relaxation and site-seeing/exploring. Our group was fun and adventurous but not to rowdy which was nice. Food on board was exceptional, especially for a boat tour of this type! Great value. Would definitely book again.

Med Sailing in Croatia (from Split to Dubrovnik) Tour

Med Sailing in Croatia (from Split to Dubrovnik)

Med Sailing Holidays exceeded all expectations! The itinerary was so well thought out and took us to many special places. The skipper of our boat was very professional and his knowledge of sailing and the Adriatic sea was brilliant. The hostess we had made fabulous meals for us which meant we didn't have to lift a finger. This company made our trip so memorable and we will be booking another trip very soon. Cant recommend Med Sailing Holidays enough!

Everything was fantastic. Elite Travel is superb. The hotels were great and the guides were superb . We basically had private tours and private transport everywhere. I would highly recommend elite travel as a contractor for tour radar. The Croatians were very nice and it was extremely safe everywhere we went

Sail Croatia\'s Beautiful Islands Tour

Sail Croatia's Beautiful Islands

It was my first sailing trip and I had such a great week in Croatia! Our Skipper Pablo made all our wishes possible, so we sailed beautiful secluded beaches and lagoons as well as harbors and enjoyed the mix. Our group had the same sense of humor and we had such a blast together. I still can’t believe such a bunch of strangers got along so well, it didn’t feel uncomfortable or weird one second even though we shared little space together. Only the boat charter agency could have taken better care of their boats as ours was really basic and not well equipped, some things were broken. Other groups we met along the trip shared the same opinion. Sailwithus provided us with a lot of helpful information before the trip. And yes - follow what they say about packing, I could have left 2/3 of my stuff at home. I can highly recommend sailing if you want to unwind, this week relaxed me so much, I absolutely loved it!

Croatia: Islands & Mountains Tour

  • Hiking & Trekking
  • Mountain Hikes

Croatia: Islands & Mountains

Our guide, Mario, was so personable. He was knowledgeable, funny and extremely thoughtful. The places that we visited and hiked were very good. The weather was a bit of a challenge but that was out of everyone’s control. We are so happy that we were able to experience this region and the people. I would highly recommend Mario and Exodus for anyone wanting to experience hiking as well as seeing the culture of Croatia.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Croatia

Captain was amazing. Great food and great company Lots of sailing when weather permitted Very well organized
Claudia was an amazing guide! Couldn’t have asked for anyone better. The trip was super fun, great group, and we did so much in the amount of time we had. Would absolutely go again!!
Really enjoyed the sailing! It is a beautiful sea! My only wish is that we took more time sailing. We used the motor too much. Bruno is an excellent skipper and host.
