- UC Irvineâs Department of Drama Presents âThe Brotherâs Paranormalâ
Prince Gomolvilasâ ghost-hunting play explores the intersection of genre, race and displacementÂ
Irvine, Calif., April 18, 2024 â UC Irvineâs Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Drama presents The Brotherâs Paranormal , a story about two Thai American brothers who set out to launch a ghost-hunting business after a nationwide rise in sightings of âAsian-looking ghosts.â The play is written by Prince Gomolvilas and guest directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera. The show will be presented from April 27-May 4, 2024
Guest director Jon Lawrence Rivera joins the UCI drama department from the Playwrightâs Arena where he serves as the artistic director. The organization was founded by Rivera with the commitment to discover and produce innovative works written exclusively by Los Angeles playwrights. âI've always admired Prince's writing. He is one of the most prolific Asian American playwrights we have today. When I had the opportunity to direct this play, I jumped on it right away,â shares Jon Lawrence Rivera, guest director. The play, The Brother's Paranormal , follows brothers Max and Visarut as they investigate paranormal activities in the home of an African American couple displaced by Hurricane Katrina. As the story unfolds, perceptions of reality and fantasy clash, revealing shocking truths tied to traumatic pasts.Â
The Brother's Paranorma l delves into themes of grief and memory, also highlighting mental health issues among Asian immigrants in a poignant narrative of loss and connection. Rivera, deeply connected to the material, adds, âIt's interesting how deeply I understood grief during the production period. My mother passed unexpectedly last Thanksgiving. As I processed my own grief, I understood Max's journey better. Without giving away too much of the plot, grief is a long process. And our desire to communicate with our loved ones who have passed is real.âÂ

Coal Train Pollution Increases Health Risks and Disparities
Study of california bay area coal train pollution carries local, global warning.
- by Kat Kerlin
- April 18, 2024
Trains carrying loads of coal bring with them higher rates of asthma, heart disease, hospitalization and death for residents living nearest the rail lines, according to a new study from the University of California, Davis.
The study, published online today in the journal Environmental Research, focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area and is the first health impact assessment of coal train pollution in the world.
It found that coal train pollution has significant health effects that disproportionately impact communities of color and people who are young, old, or have low incomes.
While centered on East Bay neighborhoods, the study carries implications for communities worldwide living alongside passing coal trains. At least 80 countries use coal power, which generates about 40% of the worldâs electricity.
âThese trains run all over the world, exposing the poorest populations who often live close to the train tracks,â said lead author Bart Ostro, a scientist with the UC Davis Air Quality Research Center. âAs a result, these impacts have local and global implications.â
Coal, and more coal
The study includes parts of Oakland, Berkeley, Martinez and Richmond, where coal is already being transported from Utah mines by rail. The assessment specifically centers on the potential health impacts of a proposed coal terminal under review, which could bring an additional 7.4 million tons of coal per year by rail to the Port of Oakland.
âThat translates to about 10 trains per week potentially passing through a densely populated urban area,â Ostro said. âThe trains continuously generate microscopic particles â called PM2.5, or fine particles, which are regulated by the U.S. EPA. This results in chronic exposures. The particles can infiltrate the lungs and bloodstream and pose serious health risks.â
Health impacts of coal trains
To quantify the health impacts of PM2.5 emitted from passing coal trains, the study authors integrated air quality data with medical and demographic information using software mapping and analysis programs. They ran different scenarios for increases in PM2.5 for the roughly 262,000 people who would be exposed.
They found that, under the most severe scenario â an increase in annual fine particulates of 2.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air â six additional people would be expected to die each year among this population.
When the authors adjusted the analysis to incorporate the higher risks for people of color, an estimated 15 total deaths were possible.
The study results also suggested:
- 28 additional hospital admissions for heart disease.
- 22 new cases of asthma.
- 17 additional cases of pneumonia.
- 58,000 additional days of asthma attributable to coal train transit.
Several of these outcomes represent a 3 to 6% increase over current levels.
Under a less severe scenario (1 microgram per cubic meter of air), additional yearly health impacts would be about 50% lower.
Race-specific estimates
The study also provided race-specific estimates, finding that Hispanic and Black residents have 41% and 29% higher levels of PM25.5 exposure, respectively, relative to white residents.
âOur study is a microcosm of what likely affects millions of city residents throughout the world living near passing, uncovered coal trains that deliver coal to power plants and export terminals,â said Ostro.
Additional co-authoring institutions include UC Irvine and the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
The research was supported by the California Air Resources Board Community Air Monitoring Grant Program and the UC Davis Environmental Health Science Center.

UCI Alums Share First Published Work With Their Families
A Closer Look at the Benefits of UC Librariesâ Open Access Agreements
At nine years old, Esmeralda MartĂnâs goals were to attend college and become an author. At 18, she enrolled into UC Irvine, majoring in education science and psychology and social behavior with the hopes of one day becoming a teacher. During her time at UCI, Esmeralda also discovered a passion for research and how it can enable her to help her community.
After completing her undergraduate studies at UCI in spring 2023, Esmeralda achieved her second goal when she copublished a research article that focuses on how first-time parents of young children from low-to-moderate income, racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds split household tasks, child care, and financial responsibilities. Based on her work in the lab of UCI Professor Stephanie M. Reich, the research article âHow New Mothersâ and Fathersâ Allocation of Tasks Relate to Their Coparenting Relationship,â was published in the Journal of Family Issues in November 2023.
With the help of a UC open access agreement with SAGE Publishing , Esmeralda and Clarielisa Ocampo, one of her student coauthors, have been able to share their published research with their families and friends around the world.
Publisher Open Access Agreements
The University of California has agreements with a number of scholarly publishers, such as SAGE Publishing, that allow UCI authors like Esmeralda and Clarielisa to be able to publish their work open access (OA) at a discounted rate or even at no cost. As with UCâs other OA publisher agreements , the UC libraries are redirecting subscription funds to help cover OA publishing fees for UC authors who publish in covered journals. Thus, the agreements help reduce costs for authors and control UC librariesâ journal-related expenses.
When UCI authors choose to publish OA in a SAGE journal , UCI Libraries will cover the first $1,000 of the OA fee, and authors will receive a 15-20% discount for the remaining fee. UCI authors who do not have sufficient research funds available may request additional library funding to cover the remaining OA fee.
A main benefit of publishing open access includes increasing access to publicly funded research.
Impact of Open Access
Because her research was published open access, Esmeralda was able to share her article with her family and friends. The news of her accomplishments even reached Mexico because open access articles can be read from every region and country. Esmeraldaâs family was able to rejoice in seeing their family name, MartĂn, in formal print as well as share the excitement of having a published author in the family. As a first-generation college student, Esmeralda said she struggled with imposter syndrome during her first year of college.
âI was constantly surrounded by individuals who seemed to understand everything that the professor was discussing in lecture, whereas I felt like I couldnât speak up or ask questions because I was worried about sounding like I didnât belong in a college class,â Esmeralda explained.
Today, Esmeralda works as an academic affairs coordinator at a community college. She encourages other first-generation students to never doubt their sense of belonging in higher education because their voices are crucial and necessary in such spaces.
Clarielisa, who is now pursuing a PhD at the University of California, Riverside researching how language can be used as a tool for change, said it was incredibly meaningful to share her research with colleagues, friends, and family. She said their excitement emphasized the significance of this milestone, marking what she hopes will be the first of many publications.
âHaving my work available through open access serves as a beacon for future students from similar backgrounds, demonstrating that publication is attainable and showcasing the work that Iâve accomplishedâ she said. âOpen access ensures that my journey and contributions can inspire and inform others.â

College baseball weekend: UC San Diegoâs Izaak Martinez closes door on opponents
UCSD left-hander ranks among national leaders in ERA and saves, giving the Tritons a dependable, multi-inning option at the back end of the bullpen

UC San Diego pitcher Izaak Martinez brings to mind those long-forgotten days when a team called on its closer not for three outs but three innings.
Martinez, a 5-foot-10 senior left-hander from Glendora, has appeared in 16 of UCSDâs 34 games this season, averaging more than two innings an outing.
And while most pitchers are eager to be part of the starting rotation, Martinez enjoys getting multiple opportunities in relief each week.
âI want to be part of as many winning situations as possible,â Martinez said. âThe role that Iâm in puts me in a good position to do that.
âIf Iâm able to throw three games on a weekend, then I would love to do that and help us get three wins. Starting is great, but being part of three wins is cool, too.â
UCSD coach Eric Newman said Martinez has pitched three straight games several times the past two seasons, most memorably last year when he picked up three saves in a sweep at Cal Poly.
âHeâs really unique in that he bounces back really well,â Newman said. âHe can throw multiple times on a weekend. Heâs super competitive. Always wants the baseball.
âIf we have the lead after the sixth inning, thatâs the time weâre going to use him.â
Martinez has been nearly untouchable this season. He ranks fourth in the nation with a 1.35 ERA, and heâs tied for seventh with seven saves.
He had allowed just two earned runs in 39 innings this season before running into trouble Sunday against then-No. 12 UC Irvine.
Martinez came on with the Tritons leading 8-5 after six innings and cruised through the seventh and eighth.
In the ninth, Martinez hit the leadoff hitter and then walked the next batter.
âHe then settles back in and goes 0-2 on the next hitter,â Newman said. âSo youâre like, âOK, heâs fine.â â
Except the UC Irvine batter then smacked a ball that kicked up chalk for a double down the left-field line.
A bunt single, a sacrifice fly and an infield single followed. When the dust settled, the Anteaters had scored four runs for a 9-8 lead.
Newman stayed with Martinez for all of it.
âIt was one of those weird deals,â Newman said. âAs superhuman as some of the numbers and feats look over the past two years, Izaakâs still human.â
But the coachâs faith in the closer never wavered.
âThe confidence theyâve put in me and the belief in my ability has helped me grow as a pitcher,â Martinez said. âI had no doubt they would allow me to work through that. And that was good. I needed to work through that as a competitor.â
His Tritons teammates had Martinezâs back.
UCSD rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, with Nick Costelloâs infield single scoring teammate Brock Kleszcz for the walkoff win.
âI was telling the guys, âI kind of wanted to see if you were able to handle some adversity,â â Martinez said with a laugh.
He actually credits much of his success to the UCSD defense.
âWe are known for having a really solid defense,â he said. âI couldnât thank the eight other guys on the field more.
âIâm striking guys out, but weâre making some really good plays right alongside that.â
Sundayâs victory provided UCSDâs seventh series win of the season and positioned the Tritons to challenge for their second straight Big West title.
UCSD (23-11, 10-5 Big West) is one game out of first place as it begins the second half of conference play this weekend at Cal State Bakersfield (11-24, 6-9).
⢠University of San Diego (23-12, 8-4 WCC) is tied for third place in the West Coast Conference as it travels to Pepperdine (11-24, 6-6) this weekend.
USDâs 4.76 ERA is 2 1/2 runs better than Pepperdine (7.26), which leads the conference in hit batters (75).
The Toreros rank second in the WCC in batting (.293) â led by first baseman Jack Gurevitchâs conference-leading .380 average â and are scoring 7.1 runs a game.
USD outfielder Jakob Christian had a pair of two-homer games last week at Portland. He shares the WCC home run lead at 15 with Saint Maryâs Christian Almanza.
Christian is second in RBIs with 40 to Almanzaâs 45.
⢠San Diego State (11-25, 5-13 Mountain West) takes a week off from conference play for a three-game series at No. 15 UC Irvine (25-8).
The Aztecs have lost seven of their past nine games, including Tuesdayâs 12-5 defeat at Long Beach State.
The biggest challenge continues to be on the mound, where SDSU has a 7.15 staff ERA. Only New Mexico (8.49) has been worse in the Mountain West.
The Aztecsâ staff leads the conference in strikeouts (335) and opponent batting average (.260), but also in walks (256) and hit batters (86).
Complicating matters is an offense that has scored a league-low 190 runs (5.3 rpg).
⢠Point Loma Nazarene (29-8-1, 18-5-1 PacWest) closes out the conference schedule over the next two weeks with split four-game series against Azusa Pacific (18-22, 13-10) and Biola (19-22-1, 9-14).
The second-place Sea Lions and first-place Westmont (29-10-3, 20-3-1) are challenging for the conference title.
The four-team PacWest Tournament begins May 8 in Azusa.
PLNU leads the PacWest in batting (.316) and pitching (3.84 ERA).
Cal State San Marcos (21-15, 20-11 CCAA) finds itself a half-game behind first-place Cal State Monterey Bay (25-15, 21-11) with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
The Cougars host third-place San Francisco State (23-15, 17-11) four four games this weekend, then travel to last-place Stanislaus State (14-24-1, 10-20) next week.
The six-team CCAA Tournament begins May 8 in Pomona.
