Vardan - A perfect travel partner

Vardan was excellent with the knowledge about places. He had perfect attitude and commitment to make you enjoy the trip. He used to go out of his way to help us enjoy the trip. He was also very honest and friendly. A very safe driver to travel with. He was very punctual all the time. His english and communication was also perfect. He has a big spacious car which can accomodate bigger groups. Would strongly recommend him

My family (from USA) visited Armenia for the first time this May. We found Vardan's information and hired him for a driving tour. He picked us up in a spacious van from our hotel (he even had water) and was right on time. He speaks great English and would be great for people of any age. There were a few things we wanted to see, but Vardan mostly helped pick where we should go which was great. We had such a great time with him on our first trip that we scheduled a second day trip with him. Vardan took us so many places, but here are a few: Khor Virap, great views of Mt. Ararat, a dolma festival, the Armenia Genocide museum/memorial, Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Lake Sevan (& we stopped at a restaurant), Lake Sevan Peninsula & Sevanavank Monastery, Temple of Garni, Geghard Monastery. He can probably take you wherever you want to go! Vardan was great about answering all our questions about Armenia, the history, and things to do in Yerevan. If he didn't know something, he would even contact his friends or grandmother to get the answer! For example, my dad had some questions about things his grandmother used to do, so he called his grandma right up! He also stopped at great places along the way for us to take photos. Vardan made us feel like family and his two tours were the highlight of our visit to Armenia. We would have never seen so much or learned so much without him! 10/10 would recommend

Western Armenia

7 days: mt. ararat (5.167 m) tour..

Day 1 The group will depart from Yerevan for Armenian-Georgian boarder (Bavra), then will reach Georgian-Turkish border via Akhaltskha city, after passing it welll visite two old armenian capitals Kars and Ani. Then welll travel to Bayazet by passing Igdir. Tour participants will spend a night in Bayazet. Day 2 From Bayazet, the group will reach an altitude of up to 2200 meters of the Mt. Ararat by vehicle, from where will start walking path. After 4-5 hours of walk, the tour participants will reach first camp, located at an altitude of up to 3200m, where overnight stay will be held.1; luggage will be transported by horses. Overnight stay in tent. Day 3 Packing of the tents and ascent to camp 2 (4.200m, 5 hours); luggage will be transported by horses; the tents stay protected from the wind behind a wall of stones. It will be only a short night. Overnight stay in the tent. Day 4 Up to the peak 5.165m (about 4-5 hours). Start at 2 a.m. First you will have to climb over boulders and small rocks to the snow and ice cap on the peak area where, depending on the conditions, you may have to use climbing spurs. If the weather is fine there will be time for an extensive rest at the peak. Quick descent, with a rest at camp 2 and then a further descent to camp 1. Overnight stay in the tent. Day 5 Further descent to Eli and return journey to Dogubayazit. Free time. In the evening, the group will have an opportunity to visit the Daroink Castle and old Bayazet. Overnight stay will be held in Bayazet. Day 6 Reserve day. Day 7 Depart for Yerevan. Performed Services • All overnight stays according to the programme • Full board • All transfers according to the programme • A guide from Armenia • Permission from Ankara for the Ascent of Ararat • 50 Dollar entrance fee per person for the national park, Ararat • Licensed Kurdish mountain tour guide • Kurdish cook • Luggage transport by horses on the mountain until camp 2 • Tents for two persons & thermo mats (single person tents additional charge) On the mountain everyone only carries a day-pack. For the climbing there will be lunch packages. In the evening there will be a warm meal.

Republic Square, Yerevan

Republic Square (Armenian: Հանրապետության հրապարակ Hanrapetu'tyan hraparak, formerly Lenin Square is the large central town square in Yerevan, Armenia. ARF History Museum

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation History Museum is a museum in Yerevan, Armenia, that displays the history of the ARF and of its notable members. The museum initially opened in 1946 in Paris, France and throughout the years, accumulated as many as 3,000 artifacts. The Museum was inaugurated in Yerevan during an official ceremony on July 13, 2007 at the Kristapor Mikaelian Center. Dashnak leaders such as Hrant Markarian and supporters were present at the opening.

Kentron district

Kentron (Armenian: Կենտրոն, meaning "center") is a district of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It comprises the downtown, the commercial centre of the city. Vardan Mamikonyan - The hero of Avarayr Battle

He was an Armenian Sparapet - a military leader, a martyr, and a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church. During the period of 450-451, he was the leader of the Armenian liberal movement.

Vardan Mamikonyan was the leader of the Armenian military forces at the highly recognized battle of Avarayr. He may be considered as one of the greatest Armenians throughout the time. 

The Life of Vardan Mamikonyan

Vardan Mamikonyan was born in 387 at the village of Artashat. His father was Hamazasp Mamikonian who was also a military leader. The mother of Vartan Mamikonian was Sahakanuysh - the daughter of Catholicos Isaak (Sahak Partev).

In 422, Vardan Mamikonian was recognized as the sparapet and military leader of the Armenian forces. Sparapet was the supreme commander of the armed forces. Mamikonian was ready to risk his life in order to preserve the Armenian motherland. One of the greatest events during his ruled times was the battle of Avarayr.

The sparapet Vardan Mamikonian had a daughter named Vardeni Mamikonian. The girl was also known as Shushanik. Shushanik married Varsken who later took a pro-Persian position and adopt the Zoroastrianism renouncing Christianity. The husband forced Shushanik to do the same, but she refused.

Shushanik was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church and was venerated by the Armenian Apostolic Church. Shushanik is known as a saint and her feast day is celebrated on October 17th.

According to a legend, an old Armenian church - Saint Shushanik, which is located near the village Bagaran was devoted to the daughter of the great sparapet - St Shushanik.

The Battle of Avarayr (Vardanants Battle)

It was back in 449 when the Persian king Hazkert the second force the Armenians to renounce the Christian way and adopt the Zoroastrianism. However, as the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, Armenians couldn’t accept it. As a result, a war began between two forces: the Armenian Army ruled by the sparapet st Vardan, and the Sassanid Persian rulers, in 451.  

The war took place at the Plain of Avarayr on the right bank of the river Tghmut on May 26th. And Vardan Mamikonian was the leader of the Armenian army. It was an unequal battle cause the Persians brought even elephants to the Warfield. 

However, the Armenians showed great resistance. Although the sparapet died in the war, the Persians had to retreat.

Therefore, the Armenian military forces keep on the resistance. After the war, the Persian court refused their own idea of forcing nations to renounce their religion. They also recognized the Armenian Inner Autonomy. As a result, the war guaranteed religious freedom for Christian Armenia.

The Armenian fighters in the plain of Avarayr were counted among the saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. They are called “Saint Vardanank”.  

After his death, Vardan Mamikonyan was consecrated as a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In the official calendar of the Armenian church, there is a special commemoration day of St Vartan. It’s a moving day which must be a Thursday and usually, it’s in the month of February.

Vardan Mamikonian Legacy

St Vardan was much mentioned in the writings of various historians and writers. In the 5th century, the famous Armenian historian Eghishe wrote a work related to Vardan Mamikonian and the Armenian war. Later another writer - Derenik Demirchyan wrote a historical novel titled “Vardanank”.

A medal was called after the sparapet - “Vardan Mamikonian Medal”. It is given to those soldiers who show exceptional courage in military activities.

In 2002, a Hollywood project was released by an Armenian author Roger Kupelian. The project was completed in 2014. It was a film titled “East of Byzantium։ War Gods and Warrior Saints”. The main point of this film is the Vardanants battle. This film covers all the events in the 4th and 5th centuries from the adoption of Christianity.

There is a statue of the courage sparapet in the capital Yerevan and also in Gyumri . The statue of Vardan Mamikonyan in Yerevan is located near the Vernissage - an outdoor market in the heart of the city. It’s erected in 1985. The architect is S. Kyurkchyan, and the sculptor is Y. Kochar. 

The monument is located in the circular park - one of the most famous parks in Yerevan . It’s in the neighborhood of the Vardanants and Khanjyan streets, not far from the Saint Gregory The Enlightener Cathedral .

Vardan is a common Armenian name for males. Many people call their sons Vardan or Vartan, after the Armenian brave sparapet. There are also female versions of this name called Vardanoush or Vartanoush. And you may also hear the Armenian family names as Vardanyan, Vardanian, and Vartanian. They are also very common in Armenia.
