South Carolina State Museum  

The State Museum is housed in its largest artifact, the former Columbia Mill. This former textile mill also is a world-first. When it opened in 1894, manufacturing cotton duck cloth (a canvas-like material), it was the first totally electric textile mill in the world. It was also the first major industrial installation for the General Electric corporation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. WonderWorks: Myrtle Beach

Local amusement park for the mind with 41,000 square feet of  “edu-tainment” . The upside-down attraction combines education and entertainment with more than 100 hands-on exhibits that challenge the mind and spark the imagination.

This once top-secret laboratory was located in the Bermuda Triangle. An experiment gone awry lifted the laboratory, carrying it to Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach where it landed upside down. Luckily, all of the exhibits remained intact and available for guests to explore.

South Carolina Aquarium The South Carolina Aquarium showcases aquatic life from the five major regions found in South Carolina: Mountain Forest, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Coast and the Atlantic Ocean. The Aquarium's structure extends 200 feet out over Charleston Harbor. As visitors approach the Aquarium, they enter the ticketing area under a magnificent stained-glass art wall. The history of road travel via motorways, highways, and freeways

The Romans are credited with establishing the first road networks, created specifically to transport troops and supplies to far-flung corners of the empire. But it wasn't until the early years of the 20th century that the idea of roads built solely for motor traffic, or controlled-access highways, shifted into gear. The world's first motorway was inaugurated in 1924. Soon afterwards, plans for an interstate highway system in the United States were being drafted. Meanwhile in Germany, the Autobahn caught the imagination of many. Today, motorways and freeways can be found in numerous countries. But what drove the urge to build these extraordinary vehicular platforms in the first place?

Via Appia - the world's first highway

The Romans established a vast network of highways throughout their empire, the most famous being Via Appia or Appian Way, built in 312 BCE during the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, and was one of the first long-distance paved roads in the world. Parts of this famed highway are still visible and remain trodden today, making Via Appia the oldest road surface still in use, according to Guinness World Records.

Legacy of the Roman roads

Roman roads remained in use for centuries. While they disappeared with time, new roads sprang up to follow their routes. Pictured in 1937 is a lane set parallel to Fosse Way, the Roman road in England that linked Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) with Lindum Colonia (Lincoln).

The Pershing Map

In the 20th century, the United States Congress began funding roadways through the Federal Aid Road Act of 1916. The Federal Aid Highways Act of 1921 further provided for federal matching funds for road construction and improvement. Six year later in 1922, General John Pershing submitting a detailed network of 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of interconnected primary highways—the so-called Pershing Map—after the Bureau of Public Roads asked the Army to provide a list of roads that it considered necessary for national defense.

The first motorway in the world

But it was in Europe that the first motorway in the world was inaugurated. On September 21, 1924, Italy's King Victor Emmanuel III opened the Autostrada dei Laghi ("Lakes Motorway"), which today forms parts of the Autostrada A8 and Autostrada A9.

The Reichsautobahn

Soon after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the Nazi dictator approved an ambitious long-distance highway construction project. The Reichsautobahn system was the beginning of the German autobahns. This picture, taken from the Graf Zeppelin airship, shows the new highway between Cologne and Dusseldorf under construction.

A propaganda coup

The ambitious program of building the autobahn network not only improved Germany's transport infrastructure, it created 100,000 jobs and was a propaganda coup.

Mapping the way forward

In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt drew inspiration from Pershing's idea to create a hand-drawn map (pictured) with eight superhighway corridors for the Bureau of Public Roads to study. Roosevelt had sown the seeds of what would become the Interstate Highway System.

Getting in gear

Meanwhile, the four-lane Pennsylvania Turnpike was taking shape. Modeled after Germany's autobahns, the road was one of the earliest long-distance, limited-access highways in the United States and served as a precedent for additional limited-access toll roads and the Interstate Highway System.

Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956

On June 29, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Federal-Aid Highway Act. The bill authorized the construction of 41,000 miles (66,000 km) of the Interstate Highway System over a 10-year period, at a cost of US$25 billion (equivalent to approximately $215 billion in 2024). 

Accelerating costs

Inevitably perhaps, the project's timescale and budget was vastly underestimated. It ended up costing US$114 billion, or $618 billion today's money, and took 35 years to complete. Pictured under construction in 1956 is the San Diego freeway.

Driving American identity

Essentially, America's National Interstate Highway System was developed to accommodate the nation's growing prosperity and need for civil defense. The Interstate Highway System also dramatically affected American culture, contributing to cars becoming more central to the American identity.

First among equals

In October 1974, Nebraska became the first state to complete all of its mainline Interstate Highways with the dedication of its final section of Interstate 80. The final segment of I-80 was opened in 1986.

Journey's end

The original Interstate Highway System was proclaimed to be completed with the opening of the last section of Interstate 70 (I-70), the 15-mile (24-km) Glenwood Canyon.

First motorway in the United Kingdom

Back across the pond, the Preston Bypass was the United Kingdom's first motorway. Opened on December 5, 1958, the road originally stretched eight miles (12 km). It would later form part of the M6 Motorway.

Opening of the M1

Britain's first full-length motorway was the M1. Opened in 1959, it connected London with Leeds. Pictured is a section under construction showing the Broughton roundabout at the junction with the Dunstable and Newport Pagnell roads.

Speed is of the essence

Iconic landmark

An iconic example of civil engineering, the M1 carries anywhere between 130,000 and 140,000 vehicles every day. But it's not Britain's busiest motorway. That honor belongs to the M25.

"The Road To Hell"

The M25 is an orbital motorway that almost completely encircles London. At 117 miles (188 km) in length, this is one of Europe's largest ring roads. It's also one of the most dangerous. Besides almost daily gridlock, numerous accidents have been recorded on the M25, many of them fatal. In 1989, British singer-songwriter Chris Rea released an album called 'Road to Hell.' An eponymous single topped the UK Albums Chart for three weeks. Rea later explained that the song was inspired by the frustrations of M25 rush-hour traffic.

"Spaghetti Junction"

Not for nothing is the Gravelly Hill Interchange in Birmingham, England, known as "Spaghetti Junction." When the interchange opened in 1972, drivers complained about its complex road system. Indeed, with its winding roads and unexpected gradient variations, it makes for one of the most confusing junctions in the country for motorists to navigate.

Meishin Expressway, Japan

The Meishin Expressway was the first expressway in Japan, opening in 1963. It connects Osaka and Nagoya. The road is pictured in 1965 as the Hikari Super Express train speeds over a rail bridge above.

Dalton Highway, USA

One of the most isolated roads in the US is the Dalton Highway in Alaska. Signed as Alaska Route 11, this is a 414-mile (666-km) road that connects Fairbanks with Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean.

Lærdal Tunnel, Norway

The Lærdal Tunnel in Norway carries two lanes of European Route E16. At 15 miles long (24 km), this is the longest road tunnel in the world. It serves as the final link completing the main highway that now enables car travel between Oslo and Bergen.

Karakoram Highway, Pakistan

One of the highest paved roads in the world is the Karakoram Highway, in northern Pakistan. It reaches a maximum elevation of 15,466 feet (4,714 m) near the Khunjerab Pass. 

US Route 50, USA

US Route 50 is often called "the loneliest road in the world." Stretching 3,019 miles (4,859 km) from California to Maryland, the highway runs through mostly rural desert and mountains.

Pan-American Highway

At around 19,000 miles (30,000 km), the Pan-American Highway is the world's longest "motorable road," according to Guinness World Records. Mexico became the first Latin American country to complete its portion of the highway, in 1950.

Highway 1, Australia

Meanwhile, Australia's Highway 1 can claim the title of longest continuing highway in the world (the Pan-American Highway is separated by the Darién Gap). Highway 1 has a total length of approximately 9,000 miles (14,500 km).

Trans-Siberian Highway, Russia

Not far behind in terms of length is the Trans-Siberian Highway. A network of federal highways that span the width of Russia from the Baltic Sea to the Sea of Japan, the highway is over 6,800 miles (11,000 km) long.

Trans-Canada Highway, Canada

And at 4,645 miles (7,476 km) long, the Trans-Canada Highway travels through all 10 provinces of Canada, from the Pacific Ocean on the west coast to the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast, to make this scenic route one of the longest of its type in the world.

Brit Sarah Dusek and her American husband Jacob Dusek have always viewed the world through a lens of possibilities. The couple met in Taipei, Taiwan, nearly two decades ago and started out raising their two sons in Montana — all while they launched what has become one of the preeminent glamping companies in the country, Under Canvas . It disrupted the old standards of rustic camping and replaced it with chic, eco-friendly safari-style tents against the background of some of the most iconic U.S. destinations. 

Now they’ve taken that same mindful model of meaningful outdoor experiences into the luxury travel space, debuting a new brand last month: Few & Far . It's a sustainable company dedicated to carbon-neutral exploration. “The heart of all of it is the magical connection there is when people connect with nature in extraordinary ways,” Sarah Dusek told Travel + Leisure.

Each of the 30 itineraries available on the site right now are ones that someone from the Dusek family has experienced first-hand, providing a personal level of curation and paired with a focus on putting sustainability first. 

Among her favorite trips offered are the Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Masai Mara Wildlife Adventure , a 12-day itinerary with visits to Kigali and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Masai Mara in Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania. She took a group of female CEOs on the journey last October, saying that “it was absolutely mind-blowing and extraordinary” and that “every single woman on the trip said it was by far the most incredible trip she’s been on.” 

Another highlight is the five-day San Juan Islands Tented Camp Experience , a tailored group trip with accommodations set up specifically for each group. On Sarah Dusek’s own visit, she took about eight female CEOs there for a “boutique, five-star tented experience under the stars on a farm,” where they arrived by seaplane and then sea kayaked, hiked, and enjoyed outdoor farm-to-table dinners. The best part: every person could rest assured that their stay used 70 percent less water consumption than staying at an average hotel. 

Her own family traveled last Christmas inspired the Enchanting Southern Africa itinerary, a 12-day getaway from Cape Town up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, before heading to a houseboat on the Chobe River in Botswana. “It was so special because you could be right on the water watching the wildlife morning, noon, and night,” she said. “The boys could fish and we could traverse up and down the Zambezi, experiencing a different view each day.” 

After that, the trip boards the luxurious Rovos Rail through Hwange National Park in Bulawayo to Pretoria, before ending in Johannesburg.

Having test-driven every single one of the itineraries on her own is what makes Few & Far’s curation so special. “All of these are very personal to us,” Sarah Dusek said. “They're an expression of who we are — and we love to share them.”

Launching a new travel company was never the intention, with the Duseks selling off Under Canvas in 2019 and moving their family to Cape Town, where they worked as venture capitalists helping empower and fund female entrepreneurs. But they continued to be avid travelers, committed to exposing their sons, now 12 and 15, to as many cultures and perspectives as possible. 

During a trip to the Forgotten Mountain’s remote region in northern South Africa’s Limpopo province along the Zimbabwe border, they knew they had stumbled upon something special in UNESCO’s Vhembe Biosphere Reserve . Soon, they had bought a 10,000-acre space, where they’re now set to debut as the 60-room Few & Far Luvhondo eco-lodge at the end of this year. Inspired by weaver bird nests, the site will include a solar-powered aerial experience with a cable car system featuring a 40-kilometer (about a 25-mile) track to provide a uniquely immersive way to explore the African bush and its wildlife.

“We hadn't planned on coming back to the commercial travel space again, but are still so passionate about travel and we still love curating extraordinary experiences,” Sarah Dusek said. “We kept thinking about the safari experience and how to reimagine it for our children and how we could incorporate conservation and travel.”

That forward-thinking eco-first philosophy is what drives all of the Duseks’ efforts. “Outdoor tourism can do so much good,” Sarah Dusek said. “There can be so much harmony with creating an economy, stimulating jobs, preserving wildlife, making sure that our habitats are protected, and that we don't lose biodiversity.”

In fact, through a combination of conservation efforts — largely from tree planting, as well as wetlands management, rewilding, and restoring — the eco-lodge should be on track to sequester as much as 100,000 more tons of carbon a year than it currently does. That’s especially meaningful since the 10,000 acres they own have more biodiversity than in all of Europe. 

Additionally, she started looking at the possibilities of helping the rural people, many of whom live in poverty and are generating a revenue stream through tourism. “You start educating people about the difference of what happens when we conserve and protect the land and start investing in the people and then you start to ripple effects in so many levels," she said.

Ultimately, what drives Sarah Dusek is her own dedication to instilling these values in her kids. “I want to show my kids how extraordinary our planet is and I want them to fall in love with it,” she said. “When you're out in it, magic happens and the chances of falling in love with the planet are infinitely greater.”

All of those facets come together in each of the trips through Few & Far — and she hopes that every traveler will be taken by the impact of their adventures. “Travel changes us and has the power to change a belief pattern,” she said. “It shows us that the way we live is not the way everyone lives and maybe not the right way to live.”

In particular that happens the most when she’s out on the great outdoors. “The more time I have spent in the natural world, the more I learn about the people, behaviors, patterns, and cultures in our world,” she said. “That makes us richer and gives us all a chance to realize gosh, all the little things matter.”

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...
