In a recent interview with Ireland's Overdrive , VOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen spoke about how the band's eighth album, 2021's "Servant Of The Mind" , fits into VOLBEAT 's discography. He said: "For me, this album feels like the way we used to do things back in the day. It felt like a rebirth of what we did in the beginning and then taking the experience of being better songwriters with more heavy stuff. It still feels very new because we're only just getting to promote the album and play these songs live."

He continued: "What I've also noticed is that the album seems to have settled a lot of divided opinions with our fans, and for once they all seem to agree with each other. [ Laughs ] After so many albums, there are people that have their favorites, and in this case, they all seem to have stopped arguing with each other [ laughs ], and collectively like this latest release. It's nice to see them all getting along — for once."

Poulsen also talked about the challenges of recording "Servant Of The Mind" considering that three members of VOLBEAT are based in Denmark while guitarist Rob Caggiano lives in New York.

"For the records that we've done with Rob , we always book two studios," Michael explained. "He has a certain way of working that takes a lot of time. That's just his way. For us, we like to work really fast and spontaneously, and that's just the way we all connect with the music. We respect the way Rob works, but for me, I don't like to spend so much time focusing on certain things, as I feel it will lose its magic. [ Rob ] puts in a lot of hours, and likes to go deep into the structure of the song, working his parts into the arrangements. That's just his way of working, so that's why we always book two studios.

"When it came to 'Servant' , it made no sense to me to just sit around, and wait for the pandemic to blow over. I would take my kids to kindergarten, and just go home, and write as much as I could, all day long. I did that for three months, consistently. Jon [ Larsen , drums], Kaspar [ Boye Larsen , bass] and I then booked a studio where we hammered out the album in about a week. Rob then booked a studio in New York, and he used a lot of time to put his parts together. That being said, I think it's some of the best work he's done to date. His solos are fantastic, and they work so well with the music.

"At the end of the day, the whole experience was really fun for me. We worked very hard, and then sent over the files to Rob , where he laid down his parts, and the whole process just felt very natural, considering that Rob couldn't come to Denmark even if he wanted to."

"Servant Of The Mind" , was released in December 2021 via Republic Records .

Revolver called "Servant Of The Mind" "excellent… the darkest and heaviest VOLBEAT offering yet." For the LP, the band took its signature heavy metal, psychobilly and punk 'n' roll sound up a notch while showcasing Poulsen 's keen ability for songwriting and storytelling. "Rarely has such a successful band sounded so ravenous," said Kerrang! magazine of the album.

"Servant Of The Mind" includes the "double barrel" of summer songs the band released in June 2021: "Wait A Minute My Girl" and "Dagen Før" (featuring Stine Bramsen ),the former of which became the band's ninth number one single on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Danish/American rockers Volbeat have announced an 18-date North American summer ‘Servant Of The Road’ tour in support of their latest studio album , Servant Of The Mind . Halestorm will also appear at most of the dates, which include Volbeat’s first Canadian shows since 2019.

“We are so excited to finally see our friends in Canada again and also get to play shows for some of our friends in the U.S. that we haven’t had a chance to see since Servant Of The Mind was released,” Volbeat said in a statement. “The incomparable Halestorm will be joining us for most of the shows, too. In a recent interview with Ireland’s Overdrive , Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen spoke about how the band’s eighth album, 2021’s Servant Of The Mind fits into Volbeat’s discography. He said: “For me, this album feels like the way we used to do things back in the day. It felt like a rebirth of what we did in the beginning and then taking the experience of being better songwriters with more heavy stuff. It still feels very new because we’re only just getting to promote the album and play these songs live.”

Volbeat are a Danish metal band that was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their music style is a combination of rock and roll and heavy metal.

The current line up consists of vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen, bassist Anders Kjølholm, Jon Larsen on drums and Rob Caggiano, also on guitar. Poulsen formed the band after becoming disillusioned with the current death metal music scene. Their first album, released in 2005, was entitled ‘The Strength/The Sound/The Songs’ and was a huge success in their home country of Denmark, reaching number 18 on the country’s charts. Following this, the band produced four more albums, switched record labels and lost and gained members on their journey to success. The band is currently signed to Dutch label Mascot Records and has released five albums to date, to great success. All five of these albums are gold certified in Denmark.

Volbeat cite their musical inspirations as coming from a variety of sources, from classic rock and roll artists such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, to modern hard rock, heavy metal, alternative rock and hard core groups. Some of Volbeat’s greatest songs include ‘Still Counting’, ‘A Warrior’s Call’, ‘Sad Man’s Tongue’ and ‘Lola Montez’. The band has played with artists such as Metallica and Nightwish and enjoyed several world tours. They have also performed at several high profile festivals, including the UK’s Download festival.

Live reviews

Volbeat put on an amazing show at Rock AM Ring 2013. Fresh off of their latest release, Outlaw gentlemen & Shady ladies, Volbeat ripped through a brilliant 70 plus minute set, featuring several songs from their outstanding new release. Highlights include the outstanding 'The hangmans body count', Pearl Hart and Dead but Rising.

Volbeat played in front of an huge festival crowd that was eager and energetic throughout the show, which took place under sunny skies. Other Highlights of the show included a staple of their live set, 'Guitar Gangster and Cadillac Blood' , along with a very nice mix of cover songs ranging from Johnny Cash's Ring of fire, to Judas Priests Breaking the law to Slayers Regin in blood to Ramsteins Keine Lust.

Vocalist and rhythm guitar player Micheal Poulsen's biggest musical influence was Mr. Johnny Cash. All in all, the band ripped through 18 tracks without mercy, showing unrelenting energy and enthusiasm throughout. Volbeat is one of the best live acts you can see, and watching them play fills one with a sense of pleasure and freedom, allowing the listener to get lost in the music and brilliant performance. Volbeat was, without a doubt, one of the major high points of the Rock Am Ring festival of 2013.

The opening band for the night was Black Wizard. A Canadian four piece band with long hair and a big sound. They were a good start for the night.

Killswitch Engage played next and had an epic set! I had not seen them live before and I enjoyed the experience. Their set was full of all their well known songs from 'My curse' to the new 'Hate by design'.

Volbeat followed opening with a tribute to Lemmy, playing the beginning of 'born to raise hell' over the speakers, then coming out to begin the concert playing 'The devils bleeding crown' to the crowds approval. The rest night was slightly marred by technical difficulties when Mr. Poulsens head set wouldn't work correctly. He soldiered on playing a solid set! I had seen them before and liked the added mikes on the staging so the band could move around more.

The venue was good and the show well attended. The staff was efficient and polite. The VIP area was a bit disappointing so I spent most of the concert out and about.

I normally do not write reviews for concerts, but I feel obligated on this occasion. Last night's show was the worst I've ever seen. I left after two or three songs as it was awful. The crowd that stayed seemed to enjoy the band once they started their show. However, I don't understand their appeal.

I have been to many metal shows - probably 15 in the last three years. Volbeat is NOT a metal band. I don't know what the hell they are. It sounded like I was listening to a bad alternative radio station live and in person. I was not alone. Scores of fans were walking out of the show early into their set.

I go to metal shows to support bands that don't necessarily get the accolades and fame of a mainstream artist. In my humble opinion, Volbeat is everything that is wrong with music today. I will never attend any future concerts if they are on the bill.

Thanks for a super concert and an unforgettable day/night in Parken, Copenhagen....

Was it my daughter or was it the two old parents who had been looking the most forward, to yet another concert with VOLBEAT.

We were lucky enough to come backstage and see everything from the “other side”

That also included a Meet & Greet and off course a super fantastic concert delivered by VOLBEAT and not to forget the guest appearances from Johan Olsen, Barney Greenway, Danko Jones, Lars Ulrich and more…

But it was still not quite enough for our daughter. ... She ended up on stage together with other lucky little ones in the last number - Still Counting - This to a huge roar from almost 50.000 people.

In short terms – It can’t get much better. THANKS for everything.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Got to the show as Avatar was just finished up playing. Volbeat took to the stage and it was all over then..so I thought. Volbeat ROCKED the house with "The Devil's Bleeding Crown" and played the songs from "Above Heaven/Beyond Hell". It was just like listening to the album as everything was note for note, timing was perfect, couldn't distinguish between the album and performance. Volbeat rocked the house for 45 minutes and ended with "Still Counting". Not alot of nonsensical talking but serious rocking, if you missed it YOU really missed it.It was amazing to hear how many people were singing along at the same time with the music. This show will be etched into my mind forever, I waited awhile to see them again, and I hope they will be back around sooner than later. Like I said, if you missed the show, you missed an awesome performance!

This was my first Volbeat concert and I simply wished to hear some of my favorite songs. It turned out to be such a fantastic show it left me in awe long time after it ended.

I must say it was also the first concert that I went to where in my opinion the levels of sound of each instrument and vocals were configured perfectly. Each instrument was really being heard loud and clear. Suddenly at some point during the concert millions of confetti (white and red) were shot in the air and rained on people. Later on huge balloons were thrown toward audience and made an interesting effect bouncing all over the place. I should also mention the stage that seemed to be made of screens displaying animations adequate to the songs being played. All in all great experience. Would go see Volbeat again.

What can I say about my FAVORITE band of all time. No words. My very first VOLBEAT concert and it was AWESOME!! The sound and vocals were amazing. Overall, performance a perfect '10'. I was not disappointed at all. The topper would have been a meet/greet with the band. Now that would have been a dream come true! I love Michael's voice and all the songs. I became a VOLBEAT fan 5 years ago, while listening to the local rock station, one of their songs was played. I was hooked, line and sinker. Bought all their albums and researched the band and fell in love.

Thanks VOLBEAT for a memorable night!

(Maybe next concert I can get a meet/greet with Michael)

I am 48 years old & I've seen a lot of great bands put on some really great shows. I love all types of music from M.Haggard to Pantara even some of the older Rap but Volbeat is by far the best live show I have EVER SEEN. They became my favorite band about 3 years ago & I've seen them live twice so far and will see them every chance I get. My wife hates metal but after going with me to see Volbeat my second time in OKC she absolutely fell in love with their music & Michael Poulsen. We are both die hard VOLBEAT FANS FOR LIFE!!! Can't wait to see them again. Really hopeing to get to meet the guys next time. Volbeat are a must see if you haven't already.

Great show overall. It was my first time in this location and my first time volbeat.

Danko Jones did a great job as opener. I have seen them before. I like them a lot because you can feel the enjoyment they have performing.

Baroness came second, and they sounded great. Haven't heard them before, so I didn't know what to expect. I liked thier style and sound, but they seemed a bit too 'slow' to really fit in this lineup. But great anyways!

Then there was Volbeat, and the crowd got insane. The sound was great, everybody - from the band, to the crowd - had a blast!

Thank you for this great evening :)

Will Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Setlist Change After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Release?

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 001

Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has already captivated the world , leaving her fans to wonder whether any of the new songs will pop up on her Eras Tour setlist.

Swift, 34, kicked off her three-hour concert series in March 2023 in Arizona, soon traversing the United States, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. The shows highlight most of her past albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights . There also is a section dedicated to “surprise songs,” where Swift adds two new acoustic renditions (most recently, mash-ups) to the show.

Swift has been on hiatus since early March, weeks before The Tortured Poets Department dropped on Friday, April 19. The record, her 11th studio album, features 31 songs including “Fortnight,” “So Long, London,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “So High School” and “thanK you aIMee.”

Swift’s fans planning to see Eras later this year — the tour leg kicks off in Paris on Thursday, May 9 — have since taken to social media, curious if they will be able to hear any TTPD live.

“OK listen I NEED Taylor to add ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart’ to the Eras Tour setlist. … Just that ONE. … PLEASE. … It was MADE for the Eras Tour !!!!!!!!!!” a social media user wrote via X.

Another added, “I am so obsessed with Taylor’s new album idk how to survive the Eras Tour (if I actually go twice I might just drop dead afterwards).”

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 002

Since Eras has sections dedicated to Swift’s previous albums , it is possible that TTPD could get its own mini-set in the lineup. Not all of her preexisting cohorts feature the same amount of songs, so Swift could cut some songs in order to add a time for Tortured Poets additions .

Spotify added further fuel to the fire on Friday as Swifties noticed the streaming platform’s official video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a TTPD track, features footage solely from the Eras Tour.

Related: Breaking Down All of Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour' Surprise Song Mash-Ups

Swift’s musical director David Cook , who has also been featured on several of her past LPs, also hinted that TTPD songs could make an appearance on the tour lineup.

“Not sure how much I can add to the discourse other than this album is really REALLY good. You FEEL it,” Cook wrote via Instagram on Friday, quoting “Loml” with a mind-blown emoji.

According to eagle-eyed Swifties that captured screenshots, Cook also wrote, “Wait until you hear the live versions.” The addition, however, has since been deleted.

Of course, it is also possible that Swift will drop a TTPD single in her surprise song section.

“How will The Tortured Poets Department affect the Eras Tour ? Hopefully only on surprise songs (in a good way),” an X user theorized.

While Swift has yet to address if TTPD will affect her Eras Tour setlist, she’s given fans insight into how she picks song s for the acoustic section.

“This has become my favorite part of the show because it’s become very chaotic and it’s become a challenge for me to think of new things to do for every single city,” Swift told the crowd in Singapore in March. “And hope that I’m doing something that you guys might like. It’s been a blast!”

Per the Grammy winner, she “invented [her] crazy acoustic section,” to be able to play “as many songs” as she could way over the 44 staples at each show. Adding TTPD tracks there seems like an easy way to do just that, if you ask Us.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now and Swift’s Eras Tour resumes on Thursday, May 9.

2024 RBC Heritage live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

There is no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap this week on the pga tour.

rbc-heritage-signage-2023-g.jpg

Players make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for this week's 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers will tee it up on Harbour Town Golf Links across the first two days as yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar gets underway.

Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage will not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend. That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage; he followed a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head.

If Spieth is to return to the winner's circle, he will have to go through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 remains in the field for now and aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were among those to perform well at the Masters, and they hope that translates to more of the same. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will look for some form. In total, 26 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to play.

City data shows spike in red light tickets for first quarter of 2024 versus 2023

More drivers ran red lights in the first quarter of 2024 than in the same period of 2023, city statistics show.

Some intersections even saw red light infractions almost double, like the intersection of Calgary Trail southbound and Whitemud Drive, which saw 405 red light tickets issued in the first quarter of this year, versus 204 during the same period last year.

The city has provided data for its 10 worst intersections, which are primarily roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or higher.

Officials believe the spike is likely due to weather. More than twice as much snow fell in the city early this year compared to 2023.

"Folks need more time to slow down and stop when it's slippery, so that will explain that seasonal kind of difference," said Christie Pelletier of the City of Edmonton.

"When you look at one year to another, that short one year to another comparison, that's when you see the difference."

  • The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

Sgt. Kerry Bates of the Edmonton Police Service traffic safety unit agrees weather could have played a factor in the increase in violations.

"It's a good stretch of really cold weather. And I think even the road maintenance solutions they put on the road don't do the job quite as well in really cold weather, and the roads do get slippery," he told CTV News Edmonton on Thursday.

But Bates points out weather is not an excuse to run a red light.

"We're supposed to drive to the road conditions, which would mean that people should slow down and use a little more caution, brake a little earlier, and (drive more slowly) on the different roadways."

He says automated enforcement is the best way to deter people from running red lights.

"We don't generally set up on major intersections for red light violations because they're all basically monitored by automated enforcement."

The fine for a red light ticket is $405.

While more tickets were handed out in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter of 2023, Pelletier says red light violations actually trended downward between 2019 and 2023.

"From a 100,000-vehicle-count perspective, in 2019, we had approximately eight violations for red lights. And then compared to 2023, we had approximately five violations per 100,000 vehicles. So it is significant."

U of I Biology Professor Named 2023 AAAS Fellow

April 18, 2024.

MOSCOW, Idaho — University of Idaho Professor Adam Jones has been named a 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

According to information provided by AAAS, the national honor recognizes Jones for his “distinguished contributions to the field of evolutionary biology, particularly for advancing the theory and quantification of sexual selection and the evolution of the genetic architecture underlying quantitative traits.”

AAAS was founded in 1848 and is the world’s largest general scientific society. Members are nominated for the rank of fellow by their peers and are voted on by the AAAS leadership council.

“I’m very grateful to receive this recognition, and it means a lot to me that my peers value my work,” said Jones, who is in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science . Really this is an award for my lab and all the great people who’ve worked in it over the years, so I’m also thankful that all those people wanted to help me with this research.”

Jones’ research focuses on Syngnathidae, the family of fish that includes seahorses and pipefish and is characterized by male pregnancy. Specifically, his lab’s current research focuses on comparative genomics, with a particular emphasis on the effects of sexual selection and the evolution of mating behaviors.

Despite the common misconception that seahorses are a tropical fish, they actually live all over the world, which has given Jones the opportunity to travel to places such as Australia, Sweden and Portugal.

“This prestigious accolade not only recognizes Dr. Jones’ exceptional contributions to his field but also underscores the impact of his research,” said Torrey Lawrence, U of I’s provost and executive vice president. “As one of the most highly cited researchers in his discipline, Dr. Jones has pushed the boundaries of knowledge and innovation, establishing an international research reputation that enriches our academic community.”

Jones is among an exclusive group of researchers from U of I who have earned the honor of fellow. Only three others are active in the group: Jean’ne M. Shreeve, who was inducted in 1980; Lisette Waits, 2017; and Eva Top, 2021.

“Dr. Jones’ recognition as a fellow of the AAAS is a testament to his dedication, pioneering spirit and pursuit of excellence,” Lawrence said. “It is an honor that he wholeheartedly deserves, and one that fills our institution with pride and inspiration. We are privileged to have such an outstanding scholar and mentor among us, and I am confident that his contributions will continue to elevate the University of Idaho College of Science and inspire generations to come. His commitment to guiding and inspiring young minds speaks volumes about his character and his influence on shaping the future of science.”

Jones has a bachelor’s in biology from University of Colorado Boulder and a doctorate in genetics from University of Georgia. He joined the faculty at U of I in 2017. He will receive the AAAS Fellow award at the annual AAAS Fellows Forum in Washington, D.C., in September.
