Why Duran Duran at Birds Nest is such a big win for the Open

Duran Duran have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling artists of all time. Their longevity and influence on pop culture are undeniable, and they have received accolades such as Grammy Awards, Brit Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Their 2022 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame marked yet another career peak in a year that saw them headline London’s Hyde Park, perform at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, close the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and headline a tour of North America, which included sold out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden and three nights at the Hollywood Bowl.

Their groundbreaking music videos and pioneering use of technology in their art have left an indelible mark on the music industry.

This will be Duran Duran's first Valley concert since September 2022, when they treated the fans to a victory lap for the ages at Footprint Center.

Concert review: Nostalgia tour? Nah. Duran Duran, Nile Rodgers & Chic's monster hits lit it up in Phoenix

Dierks Bentley is a crowd-pleasing hit machine with Phoenix roots

Bentley is always a good time, offsetting reflective songs as deeply felt as "Home" and "I Hold On" with such crowd-pleasing staples as "What Was I Thinkin'," "Sideways" and "Drunk on a Plane."

Next year marks 30 years since Bentley and his father loaded up the family truck so the aspiring country star could try his luck in Nashville.

And we all know how that turned out. He became one of the most successful country artists of his generation, sending 18 songs to No. 1 on Billboard’s country charts.

This will be Bentley’s first performance in metro Phoenix since his headlining set at Country Thunder Arizona in April.

Innings Festival 2024: Here's who's playing Tempe in 2024

Mitchell Tenpenny and his wife, Meghan Patrick, round out the Bentley bill

Tenpenny made his first appearance in the country Top 10 in 2013 with the breakthrough single "Drunk Me,” a song whose raw emotion and relatable lyrics struck a chord with audiences, earning him widespread recognition and accolades.

He’s gone on to earn two ACM Award nominations, a CMT Music Award nomination and eight No. 1 hits on SiriusXM The Highway’s Hot 30 Countdown. His hits include “Alcohol You Later,” “Anything She Says” and “We Got History,” which currently sits in the Top 20 at country radio.

Meghan Patrick, Tenpenny’s spouse, is a Canadian country music sensation whose powerful voice and songwriting talent have launched her to stardom. Her debut album, "Grace & Grit," earned critical acclaim.

Hardy has been drawing huge reactions on the Morgan Wallen tour

Hardy is a prolific country artist who has written songs for Florida Georgia Line, Chris Lane, Blake Shelton, Cole Swindell, Thomas Rhett and Morgan Wallen.

He topped the rock and country charts this year with his half-country, half-rock sophomore album, “The Mockingbird & the Crow” from Big Loud Records. Hardy is the reigning ACM Songwriter of the Year, the 2022 BMI Country Songwriter of the Year, and a two-time AIMP Songwriter of the Year.

He’s written 12 No. 1 singles since 2018, including his own double platinum chart-topper, “One Beer,” featuring Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson, and the platinum Dierks Bentley/Breland collaboration, “Beers on Me.”

He recently drew a huge reaction from  a ballpark full of Morgan Wallen fans  at Chase Field, having previously shared a Country Thunder Arizona bill with Wallen.

Kygo is a Birds Nest regular

This is Kygo’s third performance at the Coors Light Birds Nest. The internationally celebrated DJ/producer's previous appearances were in 2020 and 2022.

In late 2015, the Norwegian DJ reached 1 billion streams on Spotify faster than any other artist, and by June 2016, he had reached 2 billion streams. He could hit 15.5 billion streams before he takes the Birds Nest stage.

When does the Waste Management Phoenix Open Birds Nest open?

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Open Birds Nest is returning in February with a mix of headliners focusing on electric dance music, country and rap.

“Our fans have shown their love for both EDM and country music, so we figured why not get this concert series started in style by showcasing both on the same night,” 2022 Tournament Chairman Michael Golding said in a press release .

American Music Award and CMT Music Award winner Sam Hunt performs the following night with special guest and multi-platinum recording artist Russell Dickerson.

Four-time GRAMMY award-winning rapper and songwriter Macklemore is set to headline the third night with Quinn XCII and ayokay.

The concert series concludes with Norwegian-born music producer/DJ Kygo making his second appearance following his debut at the Bird’s Nest in 2020, along with special guests Sam Feldt and Forester.

Tickets are on sale now with general admission starting at $75. VIP tickets are also available at $285 each that provides access to a VIP area with complimentary food and drinks as well as premium viewing for the shows. People are encouraged to buy their tickets early as prices will increase as the event nears.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome music fans back to the Coors Light Birds Nest and to feature an incredible lineup of musicians,” Golding said.

“The artists in this year’s lineup are some of the most talented and well-known musicians in the world and we can’t wait to see them take the stage in front of 8,000 music-hungry fans.”

People will also notice some changes to the Birds Nest outdoor patio in its return this year, with an enhanced fan experience being available outside the 48,000 square foot tent where the performances take place in an effort to provide more of a music festival atmosphere.

“The Coors Light Birds Nest has been known for hosting some of the biggest stars around, but this year, we wanted to take a look at how we could improve the overall fan experience, especially before the headliners take the stage,” 2022 Coors Light Birds Nest Chairman Eric Brandt said in the release.

“Coors Light Birds Nest ticket holders can expect a much more fan-friendly atmosphere where they can meet friends for drinks after golf, come early to have a bite to eat at food trucks, play outdoor party games and enjoy the various outdoor bars and seating areas.”

The 87th Waste Management Phoenix Open takes place Feb. 7-13. Drawing hundreds of thousands of people to  TPC Scottsdale in previous years, the event was cut back to 5,000 per day last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but expects a return to traditional operations this year.

Thomas Rhett and Old Dominion will take the stage at the iconic 16th hole for the inaugural Concert at the Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 5, providing fans with an earlier start date for the festivities.

The Phoenix Open week runs Monday, Feb. 7, through Sunday, Feb. 13.

General admission tickets for the Concert at the Coliseum are $150 and go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at WMPhoenixOpen.com .

A limited number of suites with all-inclusive food and beverage are also available. The Concert at the Coliseum is a 21-and-older event.

Doors open at 3 p.m. Old Dominion will kick things off at 5 p.m., with Thomas Rhett taking the stage at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The concert will take place on a stage built in the middle of the 16th hole fairway strictly for this show.

In a news release, tournament chairman Dr. Michael Golding said, “We’ve all seen the energy fans bring to cheer on the PGA Tour players at the 16th hole. We can’t wait to see and feel that buzz at night for Thomas Rhett and Old Dominion.”

Birds Nest concerts for 2022

Live music will, of course, continue at the festival’s popular Coors Light Birds Nest.

The Birds Nest will bring Sam Hunt, Macklemore and Kygo to the big tent when the popular concert series returns on the weekend of Feb. 9-12, 2022, for the golf tournament. Tickets are on sale at coorslightbirdsnest.com.

The Wednesday headline act and remaining Birds Nest lineup will be announced as more artists are confirmed.

In a release, Golding said, “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome music fans back to the Coors Light Birds Nest and to kick things off with an incredible lineup of musicians.”

Headlining the Thursday, Feb. 10, show is American country music star Sam Hunt with special guest, multi-platinum recording artist Russell Dickerson.

More about Sam Hunt, Macklemore, Kygo

A former college football quarterback, Hunt has topped the country airplay charts eight times since breaking through with “Leave the Light On” in 2014, including the multi-platinum smashes “Take Your Time,” “House Party,” “Make You Miss Me” and “Body Like a Back Road.”

Four-time Grammy winner Macklemore will headline Friday, Feb. 11. Macklemore earned his four Grammy’s in 2014: Best New Artist, Best Rap Album (“The Heist”), and Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for hit single “Thrift Shop,” one of his two No. 1 singles that year.

He also earned two American Music Awards in 2013 for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album as well Billboard Music Awards in 2013 and 2014 for Rap Song of the Year (“Thrift Shop”) and Top Rap Song (“Can’t Hold Us”).

Rounding out the lineup is Norwegian-born producer/DJ Kygo, along with special guests Sam Feldt and Forester on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Kygo has built a career on popular remixes, sellout shows in North America and Europe and headline performances at Coachella and Ultra Music Festival with 15 billion global streams. The multiplatinum “It Ain’t Me” (feat. Selena Gomez) cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 with more than 2.5 billion streams worldwide.

This is Kygo’s second Birds Nest appearance, following his successful debut in 2020.

Changes are coming

The Birds Nest will see some changes this year to the outdoor patio area.

The live performances will still take place inside the 48,000-square-foot-tent, but the area outside the tent will offer an enhanced fan experience with more of a festival atmosphere.

In a news release, chairman Eric Brandt said, “We wanted to take a look at how we could improve the overall fan experience, especially before the headliners take the stage.”

Brandt said ticket holders “can expect a much more fan-friendly atmosphere where they can meet friends for drinks after golf, come early to have a bite to eat at food trucks, play outdoor party games and enjoy the various outdoor bars and seating areas.”

Birds Nest general admission tickets start at $75. VIP tickets are available starting at $285, which includes exclusive access to an enhanced VIP area where guests are treated to complimentary food and drinks and access to a premium viewing area for the shows.

Organizers encourage fans to buy their tickets early as ticket prices will increase as the event draws closer.

The Birds Nest is located directly across from the main Phoenix Open tournament entrance. The entertainment venue opens at 3:30 p.m. and closes at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Headline acts will take the main stage each evening at approximately 8:30 p.m. The Birds Nest is a 21-and-over venue.
