Next, we suggest the Chesapeake and Ohio canal scenic byway known by its nickname the Grand Old Ditch. Travel along the 200 mile route where you will see 19th century engineering in the form of old locks as you follow along the river and breathtaking vistas with fall leaves. 

For those short on time, or just want a day trip, head to Deep Creek Lake. You will be rewarded with autumn hues, overlooking a gorgeous lake in western Maryland. Finally, in just 30 minutes you can drive along the lake, or take a longer drive exploring Civil War sights, or rent a kayak or canoe and paddle along the shoreline for views!

Wild Ponies And Camping At Assateague State Park

The wild horses of Assateague state park are well known outside of Maryland. The horses are actually split into two herds one of the Maryland side and one of the Virginia side. For the Maryland side they are part of the National Seashore . The entrance to the national park is $25 per vehicle or $15 per person. And for those looking to camp, you can camp on the barrier island !

The wild herd of 78 is managed by the National Park Service and you must stay at least 40 feet from the herds, and never touch, pet or feed the wild horses. The horses are wild, and can be seen frolicking along the beach , or in the barrier island Marshes or further inland drinking water at one of the freshwater ponds. Folklore says it was a shipwreck that brought the horses to the island or that farmers let horses roam free to avoid paying taxes!

Visitors can hike along the trails, along the beach, or kayak in the water offshore for sightings of the wild horses, along with birds, and marine life. 

Mallows Bay

Mallows Bay is a Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary and is a must visit for any outdoor or nature enthusiast. Just 30 miles from DC, this is a great option to visit in Southern Maryland! For history lovers, there are remnants of over 200 WWI wooden ships known as the “ghost fleet” sunk under the water.

In addition, there are Civil War sites and Native American history to explore. And for water lovers you can kayak or canoe through the wooden ship graveyard. 

We think this is one of the options for a weekend trips in Maryland! The best time of the year to visit is between May and September and then during low-tide as the ships can best be seen.

They have now become a natural water habitats for a variety of marine and wildlife and ecology that captivates visitors.  You can visit daily from 5:30 am to sunset. This is the perfect short weekend trip if you are already in the DC area.

Swallow Falls State Park

If you are in Oakland, head to Swallow Falls State Park just 9 miles north of Oakland. It is home to some of the most scenic viewpoints. Set along the Youghiogheny River, view the park’s borders, rock gorges and more. Culminating at Muddy Creek Falls’s 53 foot waterfall! Plus the hike is only about a mile.

The park is open daily from 8 am to sunset, and offers 65 campsites with bathhouses. As well as 3 full hook up service for campers or motorhomes and 3 cabins that can be rented! For those looking to camp, this makes for a very inexpensive weekend getaway in Maryland!

Visitors can fish for rainbow trout and more, go whitewater rafting down the river with its rugged scenery, or hike one of the 5.5 mile Heritage trails for those looking for a longer loop. The entry fee is $3 for Maryland residents or $5 for visitors. 

Also in the area is Deep Creek Lake. This outdoor lover’s paradise is perfect to visit year round. From fishing in the summer, to fall foliage, to winter where you can ski nearby!

Maryland Wine Trail Romantic Weekend Getaway in Maryland

Kent Island

Kent Island is located off the west coast of Queen Anne’s County, separated from the mainland by the Kent Narrows channel. If you are a history buff, this town was founded in 1631, and is the 3rd oldest settlement in the country, after Jamestown and Plymouth!

This island is built from its steamboat and trading port beginnings to a bustling water town. There are big name hotels, historic inns and a ton of seafood restaurants. Explore the marinas, lighthouse, or head to one of the nature parks.

Also on the island is the 500 acer The Wildfowl Trust of North America , with a wetland sanctuary. Visitors can rent kayaks and paddle through the wetlands from May to November.

Cruise up the Chesapeake Bay

Summer watersports or fall foliage hikes are sure to make special memories for you and your kids. However, there’s plenty of family fun to be had throughout the year in Maryland and here are the best getaway spots.

Assateague State Park

Kent island, havre de grace, tilghman island, deep creek lake, historic st. mary’s city, maryland is the place for family vacations, other places to consider for your family weekend getaway.

Annapolis has activities and fun for everyone in the family. Parents and children can enjoy some of the many family-friendly activities around the city or spend some time in first-rate museums and historical sites. At night, parents can enjoy some of the amenities only a world-class city can offer like fantastic restaurants and bars.

Annapolis is the capital of Maryland and it’s packed with both fun and educational activities for the entire family. Annapolis has been settled since the 1600s and the Historic District has many interesting sites that you can tour. 

There are several 18th-century style brick houses where kids can learn how people lived in the early days of the city. You can also tour the Maryland State House to learn more about Maryland’s government and how it fits into the U.S. as a whole.

The Chesapeake Children’s Museum has lots of activities for younger children and older children might be interested in seeing the Annapolis Maritime Museum or the Naval Academy Museum. 

Annapolis is the home of the U.S. Navy and the Naval Academy, so there are many parks and museums dedicated to maritime experiences and history in Annapolis. Don’t miss Pirate Adventures on The Chesapeake where you can sail on a recreated pirate-style ship and search for buried treasure.

Ocean City, Maryland has been a favorite location for family fun since the early 1900s when the famous Ocean City Boardwalk was built. Sailing, fishing, swimming, and just hanging out on the beach are always available at Ocean City. But you and the kids can get delicious food, hit the arcades, or shop along the Boardwalk. 

Don’t miss a trip to the Jolly Roger Amusement Park where kids of all ages can play carnival-style games and have fun on amusement park rides, ride roller coasters, ride Go-Karts, or try a zip line. There is also a water park if you’re planning a summertime visit.

If you love amusement parks you also must stop at Trimper’s Rides and Amusement Parks. Founded in 1887, Trimper’s is a blast from the past and a must-see if you’re visiting Ocean City. Older kids might not enjoy Trimper’s as much as Jolly Roger’s, but kids under seven will have a lot of fun on the gentler rides at Trimper’s and parents will enjoy the historic look and feel of the park.

Also worth a visit if you’re heading to Ocean City is Frontier Town Wild West Theme Park. Kids love visiting this unique park where they can pet and ride ponies, ride in a real stagecoach, and watch gunslingers face off in classic Western showdowns. The park was created in the 1950s and is a fully duplicated version of a classic Western plains town.

Assateague State Park is a stunning state park located on the northern end of Assateague Island. It’s only accessible by boat or by bridge from the mainland. If you and your kids love horses then you must take a trip to Assateague State Park. Of course, even if you aren’t horse lovers, the park is still beautiful and is the perfect place for hiking and family camping adventures. 

There is a wildlife reserve nearby and plenty of fantastic campsites where you can enjoy some quality time camping, hiking, biking, or just hanging out together as a family. There are guided ranger programs and tours available through the Park Ranger office, too.

But the park is extra special for horse lovers because of the wild ponies that live on Assateague Island. It’s said that the wild ponies are the descendants of horses who were originally brought to Maryland and Virginia on ships, but the ships crashed, and the horses swam to the islands where they flourished living wild. 

If you take an island tour either by land or by boat, you can see the wild ponies of Assateague. Horseback riding on the beach is available during part of the year along with water sports like kayaking, sailing, fishing, and swimming.

Frederick, Maryland is part of the D.C. corridor and an easy place to escape the stresses of the city with the kids for the weekend. Historically Frederick has been an important travel site because it sits right in the middle of routes going both East and West. It was a very active part of the Civil War because of its unique location and it was a major stop on the Underground Railroad as well. 

If you want to learn more about the Civil War or explore a real battlefield with your kids, you can visit the Monocacy National Battlefield which is a historical Civil War battlefield. 

Spend some time in the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Historic Downtown Frederick, where there are many kid-friendly attractions and great restaurants and shops.

If you’d rather use your weekend in Frederick enjoying the great outdoors, visit Gambrill State Park, which sits at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains and offers families great camping, hiking, and biking on more than 16 miles of trails. You can also take the entire family to visit Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center, which has a very interesting interactive nature exhibit that kids love.

Kent Island is steeped in history, and a visit to this historic place is a fun way to spark your children’s interest in the history of the U.S. Kent Island is the location of one of the three oldest settlements in the U.S. Kent Fort was founded in 1631. 

Stevensville is the oldest town located on Kent Island, and it has many historical sites you can visit, including replicas of homes from the 1600s, which are great for showing kids what daily life was like for the colonists who first settled this country. Don’t skip a visit to Christ Church , the church built by the early settlers in 1631 and still standing today.

For parents and older kids, Stevensville has a thriving arts and entertainment district with theater, many small unique shops, and some of the best restaurants in the area. You can easily spend an entire day exploring Stevensville and having a wonderful time. But there’s also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy thanks to the location of Kent Island.

Matapeake Beach offers family-friendly activities like swimming, biking, and fishing with some restaurants and activities so that families will be able to get some great food while they are enjoying the outdoors.

Hagerstown is sometimes called the Hub City because of the location it occupies. It connects large regions like South Central Pennsylvania to the D.C. area and beyond. But Hagerstown’s biggest attraction for families is the historical importance it has. 

Hagerstown has been an asset and a site of importance since the Colonial era, but it’s most famous for being the location of the Antietam battlefield. The Battle of Antietam was one of the defining battles of the Civil War. More than 23,000 soldiers on both sides of the conflict were killed in less than 12 hours during the Battle of Antietam. 

President Lincoln visited the site and later gave the Emancipation Proclamation in part because of this battle. You can visit the actual Antietam battlefield as well as the Antietam National Cemetery Museum.

You can also visit other historic sites that go back to the Colonial Era. Make an effort to stop at the Beaver Creek School Museum. Beaver Creek is a fully restored historical one-room schoolhouse that kids always enjoy visiting to see what school was like for kids hundreds of years ago.

If your family wants to get some quality outdoor time and wants to explore nature, Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Park offers hiking and biking trails as well as a zoo with self-guided and Ranger-guided tours. Crystal Grottoes Caverns is also a fun stop where you can explore caverns filled with stunning natural stalagmites and rock formations.

Thurmont, Maryland is a small picturesque city near the Maryland and Pennsylvania border. It also sits at the base of Catoctin Mountain and near the entrance to the Appalachian mountain range. 

Thurmont is the perfect weekend family getaway, especially in the fall. You can view stunning fall colors and visit some of the area’s famous historical covered bridges like the Roddy Road Covered Bridge or the Loys Station Covered Bridge. 

Or spend an afternoon at the fascinating Catoctin Furnace historical forge. Catoctin Forge was used to process hematite mined from the mountains as well to make ammunition going back to the Revolutionary War.

But the real stars of any visit to the Thurmont area are Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park. You can hike, bike, climb, and get some of the most scenic mountain views possible in the state when you spend the day in either one of these stunning national parks. 

After a day of hiking and enjoying that crisp mountain air, parents will be glad to stop at Catoctin Breeze Vineyard and Winery for a drink and a great meal.

If you love the water and want to show your kids what maritime life in Maryland was like in the past, plan a quick weekend getaway to the charming town of Havre De Grace. This quaint town sits directly at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and has stunning views and a historical downtown. It’s also easy to get to by car or even boat if you’re feeling adventurous. 

During any visit to Havre De Grace, you need to take the kids to the Concorde Point Light , the oldest publicly accessible lighthouse in Chesapeake Bay. Tour the light and go through the Keeper’s House Museum to learn more about the history of the region. 

Don’t miss the Havre De Grace Maritime Museum either. This museum is the best source of information about life in Havre De Grace through the centuries and it’s a fun experience for kids. It’s got more than 20 exhibits and a boat-building workshop that shows how boats were built throughout the 20th century. 

If you time your visit right you may get to see them restoring a historical wooden boat. Make sure that you stop by the Havre De Grace Promenade to take in some of the magnificent sunset views before you head home.

Tilghman Island is a great escape for families who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of St. Michael’s Island and other nearby vacation spots. Tilghman Island is only three miles long and one mile wide, so families can easily explore the entire island on a weekend. Boating, swimming, fishing, and other water activities are what Tilghman Island offers families along with some of the best seafood in the country. 

Take a cruise on the Rebecca T. Turk, the oldest continually working skipjack vessel in the country. Or cruise your own boat out to the Sharps Island Light and back for a family afternoon sail. You won’t find a lot of overpriced activities and restaurants on Tilghman Island but you will find the perfect setting for a family weekend of outdoor fun and quality family time.

Water lovers flock to Deep Creek Lake for weekend family trips because it’s one of the best places in the country for all water activities. 

Deep Creek Lake is the largest inland body of water in Maryland and it has more than 65 miles of shoreline to explore. Deep Creek Lake is a haven for waterfowl and freshwater fish so if you and your family like fishing Deep Creek Lake is a fantastic weekend destination. 

Boating, swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, and zip-lining are all available for family fun. You can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes to get up close to the water of Deep Creek Lake. ATVs are available for older kids and adults who want to explore Deep Creek Lake on land instead of by water.

When they are tired of being on the water, kids can enjoy a pottery class Deep Creek Pottery or spend time playing games in Fun Unlimited’s massive arcade. Get some pizza and have lunch too because there are more than 95 vintage and new games to keep you and the kids busy for hours. 

And no visit to Deep Creek Lake is complete without a stop at Candyland!, an old-fashioned candy shop that boasts more than 900 types of candy.

Historic St. Mary’s City is a unique vacation spot that makes for an ideal day trip. St. Mary’s City is a complete replica of a Colonial village with homes, shops, and working artisans so that kids can really see what it was like to live in the Colonial era in Maryland. There are several museums on the property that explain details of Colonial life and give local history. 

The village also includes Native American representation and the museums give a history of the Native Americans who lived in that area and their involvement with the Colonists. 

All of the worker’s on-site dress in period clothing and do the work that Colonists would do using period-appropriate tools and materials. It’s a wonderful way to bring history to life so that your kids can experience Colonial life.

If you want a weekend getaway with the kids that’s packed with exciting activities, Baltimore is a fantastic choice. It’s got all the attractions and activities that larger cities have without the huge price tags. Budget is important when you’re taking several kids and adults on a vacation! 

Some of the best activities for families in Baltimore are the Port Discovery Children’s Museum , the Maryland Science Center, and the National Aquarium. These three activities are all grouped near one another, making the area a convenient choice. All are near to the Inner Harbor, so many families choose to make the Inner Harbor their weekend hub. 

However, if you’re venturing out further into the city you should visit Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum (probably best for older kids) or the American Visionary Art Museum, too.

Whether you want your kids to experience some of the rich history of the area or you just want to enjoy some outdoor activities in one of the many stunning state parks that Maryland has to offer, there’s no better place for a family getaway than Maryland.

Baltimore is known as Charm City, but even though you could spend a lot of your free time touring Baltimore, there are tons of great places to visit outside of Baltimore as well!

These are our pick for the best day and weekend trips from Baltimore . They are all under 4 hours, with many of these ideas under 2 hours. Also, all of these ideas would be great for families or an adults only mini vacation!

Eastern Shore- Ocean City and More!

Ocean City is about 3 hours from Baltimore- depending on traffic. That is an obvious choice for a great weekend trip! It’s a barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean and one of the top destinations for families. You could drive out on a Friday afternoon and have the better part of 2 days to enjoy the beach, boardwalk, and other fun things to do in Ocean City.

Of course, Ocean City is not the only Eastern Shore destination worth visiting. Both Assateague Island National Seashore and its Virginia cousin, Chincoteague, are known for their wild horses. 

Also about 3 hours from Baltimore are all the Delaware beaches on the Eastern Shore. If Ocean City crowds are not your thing, rent a house in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes Beach, or Rehoboth Beach.

They are all sitting on the ocean, have pristine sandy shores, and great amenities like fantastic restaurants and shopping. While there, pay a visit to the gorgeous Cape Henlopen State Park for a wilder version of the sandy beaches and oceanfront ecosystem.

Eastern Shore- Between the Bay Bridge and the Coast

If you are looking for a weekend adventure a little closer to home, the Eastern Shore communities between Baltimore and the ocean have so much to offer! The fingers of the Chesapeake Bay form many gorgeous, out of the way, crevices on Maryland’s coastline. In some of these places you really feel like you have stepped into a secret world. Yes, they are that remote. 

There are tons of hidden beaches in this area that are great for a secluded day on the water. Or enjoy endless miles of kayaking and canoeing on the many Maryland waterways.

While visiting the Eastern Shore make sure to indulge in blue crabs or gourmet crab cakes. These crabs are fresh and taste delicious!

The Eastern Shore is home to a number of quaint towns that are thriving arts communities. St. Michaels is a small town that has a rich maritime history, Chestertown holds an annual tea party reenactment that is a ton of fun. And both Easton and Berlin are full of cute cafes and shops. 

Another draw for the Eastern Shore is its rich civil rights history. Visit the Harriet Tubman National Visitors Center and trace her steps on the Underground Railroad.

Deep Creek Region

Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County is about 3.5 hours from Baltimore. Like the Eastern Shore, the Western Region of Maryland is far enough away to make you feel like you have traveled somewhere, but close enough for a weekend trip.

McHenry and Deep Creek are the obvious draws in this area. Between all the boating opportunities on the lake itself and the family friendly entertainment options. There are arcades, mini golf, go-karts, and tons of great places to eat! In the winter, Wisp Resort is one of the best places in the region for skiing and snow tubing.

During warmer months, Wisp offers their famous mountain coaster, adventure courses, and other fun recreation options. 

Swallow Falls State Park and Oakland, MD

Just a little outside of McHenry though are some of the real gems of the area. Swallow Falls State Park is home to Muddy Creek Falls- the highest waterfall in Maryland, as well as 3 other waterfalls. One of the best kid friendly hikes is the 1.7 mile loop which hits all 4 waterfalls. This entire area has miles of trails to explore!

Within a few miles of Swallow Falls State Park is Herrington Manor State Park with great hiking and water activities, as well as the super fun Rock Maze trail. This area of Garrett County is closer to Oakland, which is a smaller but super cute town. Oakland has a few of the best restaurants in the area (including our go to breakfast spot- Englanders), a few smaller museums, and a seasonal farmers market.

If you don’t want to drive 3.5 hours to Deep Creek, there are many fun options closer to Baltimore. Allegany County- or Mountain Maryland- is home to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad . Hop aboard the Frostburg Flier or get tickets for one of their many seasonal special events.

Cumberland and Frostburg are home to a number of outdoor adventure companies as well. We love Tracks and Yaks – which offer both bike riding adventures and rail biking. The rail biking adventures are actually perfect for kids- even younger kids.

Rocky Gap State Park is also a great place for family camping (with private beach access for campers), and in Allegany County you have easy access to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail and the Paw Paw Tunnel.

Southern Maryland

One of the most beautiful and unique regions of Maryland is Southern Maryland. Sandwiched between the shores of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, there are tons of family friendly ways to spend a weekend in this area. And it’s between 1.5 t0 2.5 hours away (depending on how far south you go!).

The obvious choice is to plan a Shark Tooth hunting adventure . Rent a cabin at Mataoka Beach Cabins and get up early to beat the crowds. Popular shark tooth beaches include Mataoka, Calvert Cliffs , Flag Ponds , and Purses Park (part of Namjemoy WMA). 

Southern Maryland has a number of family friendly historical adventures as well. Spend the day at Historic St. Mary’s City or visit the Drum Point Lighthouse at the Calvert Maritime Museum . The Piney Point Lighthouse and St. Clements Island State Park are both unique and fun places to visit as well. 

Kids and adults alike would love spending time at Annmarie Sculpture Garden in Lusby and a visit to Leonardtown would please kids between the fabulous Wieck Playground and ice cream at the Salted Scoop!

During summer months check out seasonal offerings like strawberry picking at Shlagel Farms or running through the sunflower maze at Goldpetal Farm .

Catoctin Mountain Region

A little over an hour from Baltimore is the peaceful beauty of the Catoctin Mountain Region. You can either stay in Frederick or book a camping spot at Cunningham Falls State Park . 

There are tons of great hiking opportunities in this area from the overlooks at Catoctin Mountain Park to the beach and short waterfall hike at Cunningham Falls State Park. 

Book an excursion on the Walkersville Southern Railroad , tour the famous covered bridges, or feed a zebra at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve . 

A little outside of the Catoctin Mountains, there are a number of historic places like Antietam National Battlefield you can tour.

In addition to the Delaware beaches on the Eastern Shore, northern Delaware has a lot to offer families, and it’s just over an hour from Baltimore!

Winterthur Enchanted Woods in Wilmington is like a fairytale come alive. This is a 1000-acre garden with treehouses, fairy cottages, and more!

The Delaware Children’s Museum is also a ton of fun for kids with over 10 major exhibit areas. Your kids could spend a good chunk of the day playing and learning here!

You can round out your weekend with an educational stop at Fort Delaware , a living history museum with re-enactors from the Civil War period.

Lancaster County

Another easy weekend trip from Baltimore (at just over an hour) is Lancaster County. There are so many family friendly attractions in Lancaster County you could spend an entire week in this region and not do everything!

• Sight and Sound
• The Amish Experience
• The Wolf Sanctuary of PA
• All of the food factory tours (Utz, pretzels, etc…)

Philadelphia

Apart from Washington DC, Philadelphia is the closest major city to Baltimore. Philadelphia and the area surrounding it are just about 2 hours from Baltimore and mirror many of Baltimore’s offerings, but with a different twist. 

Younger kids would absolutely love the Please Touch Museum . Kids of all ages (including adults) could spend the better part of a day at The Franklin Institute , Philadelphia Zoo , or Adventure Aquarium (technically in Camden, NJ but just over the river from Philadelphia).

Older kids would really get into the American history attractions in the historic district like Liberty Bell , Independence Hall, and the Constitution Center . And adults or teens would really get into a ghost tour at the Eastern State Penitentiary , as well as the Philadelphia Museum of Art .

Just outside of Philadelphia, don’t skip the world famous Longwood Gardens — quite possibly the best gardens in the world (certainly in the U.S.).

Gettysburg is probably the most famous (or infamous) Civil War battle. This is widely considered the turning point of the war and has the distinction of the largest number of casualties suffered during the Civil War.

This is an important piece of American history and a great place to visit with kids, especially if they are old enough to understand the implications and historical significance. You can go on a driving tour of the battlefield and even hire a guide to ride along with you. There are also a number of historic buildings you can visit.

But Civil War history is not the only thing to do in Gettysburg. Kids would love a visit to The Land of Little Horses or one of a number of living history museums and experiences. 

There are also a number of parks and recreational attractions like go-karting. 

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Hershey, PA would be a huge hit with kids and families! Hersheypark is one of the best amusement parks in the U.S. It boasts 14 rollercoasters, family rides, thrill rides, a ginormous waterpark, and super fun seasonal events. And this is a short drive from Baltimore at just under 1.5 hours away.

At its heart though, Hershey is about chocolate. Make your own candy bar at Hershey’s Chocolate World or learn about Milton Hershey at the Hershey Story Museum (and indulge in the hot cocoa from around the world tasting flight!). 

Hershey is home to ZooAmerica, a zoo for North American animals. And the Hershey Gardens has a whimsical children’s garden. 

Just outside of Hershey the entire family would have fun on a trip to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park or the Indian Echo Dells Caverns .

Lehigh Valley

North of Philadelphia is an under-the-radar part of Pennsylvania that is very day and weekend trip worthy! Lehigh Valley encompasses Allentown, Easton, and Bethlehem, PA and there are so many family friendly things to do there!

You could easily spend most of the day at The Crayola Experience in Easton. Then, when you are ready for some great food, walk to the Easton Public Market for a wide variety of food stalls and shops.

Steelstacks in Bethlehem is a fantastic place to check out and they have an impressive schedule of events and concerts. Lehigh Valley is also home to a number of covered bridges.

During the summer, another full day can be filled up with a trip to Dorney Park – a fantastic amusement park with thrill rides, family rides, and a great waterpark!

In addition to all of these fun ideas, the DaVinci Science Center is a great, hands-on, STEM museum for kids.

Just north of Lehigh Valley is the amazingly awesome Poconos region. There are three major waterpark/recreation complexes here. Camelback Resort , Kalahari Resort , and Great Wolf Lodge . All three resort areas are some of the biggest and best in the U.S., with huge indoor and outdoor waterparks, seasonal snow tubing, adventure courses, arcades, and more!

To supplement your resort stay, check out Bushkill Falls, Lehigh Gorge State Park, or the boulder fields at Hickory Run State Park.

Washington DC

No weekend trip from Baltimore list would be complete without mentioning our nation’s capital! Washington D.C. is just under an hour from Baltimore and is the perfect place for a day trip, weekend trip, or week-long vacation.

The National Mall is the center of all the action, with free admission to all the Smithsonian Museums like the Air and Space Museum , U.S. History Museum , Natural History Museum, and African-American Culture and History Museum.

You can visit all the famous monuments and memorials, pay your respects at Arlington National Cemetery, and see the seat of all three branches of the federal government. Many people love visiting the White House and the U.S. Capitol Building. Some of the most famous monuments and memorials are:

• MLK Memorial
• Vietnam Memorial
• Korea War Memorial

The paid attractions are also impressive. If you are willing to spend a little money, all of these museums are fantastic for families!

West Virginia

West Virginia is surprisingly close to Baltimore (closer than Deep Creek actually) and full of fun weekend options! 

Harper’s Ferry is not only a pivotal stop in any Civil War history tour, but it’s a gorgeous area with tons of hiking and outdoor recreation opportunities. As a historic town, Harper’s Ferry has the John Brown Fort, as well as the Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park.

Blackwater Falls State Park is absolutely stunning year round. In the winter you can take a turn on the longest sled run on the East Coast!

And of course, New River Gorge is the newest National Park to be added to the parks system! 

Speaking of national parks, Shenandoah National Park and the Shenandoah area of Virginia are a mere 2 hours from Baltimore. Perfect for a weekend trip! 

Most people think of Shenandoah National Park for fall foliage trips. The Skyline Drive is very popular with visitors. However, kids and families will also love the amazing outdoor activities available at this national park. There are plenty of waterfall hikes and and sweeping overlooks. There are also a number of super fun rock scrambling hikes that are great for older kids too!

The Shenandoah area has loads of other family friendly spots in addition to the park. Seasonally Burnside Farms is one of the best places for tulip and sunflower picking. Great Country Farms is not only a great spot for ‘pick your own’ fruit, but they have a ginormous play area.

Luray Caverns is very close to the park and is a fantastic destination on its own! If you are willing to drive a little further, kids would go crazy for the Virginia Safari Park and Natural Bridge !

And, just like the Poconos, Massanutten Resort is a super family friendly destination year round with snow sports in the winter, an outdoor water park, mountain biking, and adventure sports in warmer months, and an indoor waterpark year round!

Williamsburg

Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle might be a bit far for a regular weekend trip from Baltimore (3.5 hours away). However, this is one of the best places to go for a long weekend! 

The most obvious attraction is Colonial Williamsburg. And I have to tell you, it’s awesome. This living history museum sets the standard for immersive edutainment. And they have great programs year round! 

While you are in the area, also check out the Yorktown National Battlefield and the really fantastic American Revolution Museum. This is a very hands-on museum with tons of interactive exhibits, including a Colonial Village. 

Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestown take visitors back to the 17th century and are also very immersive experiences that kids and adults would love.

Non-historical attractions in Williamsburg

However, history is not the only thing going for Williamsburg. Have you ever heard of Busch Gardens ? Yeah, it’s one of the best amusement parks on the East Coast and a definite must-do for families in the area. 

Additionally, there are literally dozens of other fun attractions. Go Ape Treetop Course is a huge hit with older kids. Outdoor adventurers will love the numerous hiking, biking, and paddling opportunities. 

Kids will love all the arcades, entertainment centers, go karting, mini golf, and more.

And where will you stay? Ummm, Great Wolf Lodge is the perfect choice for families. This indoor waterpark resort is amazingly fun and close to everything!

Virginia Beach/Norfolk

Just a little further down the Virginia Coast is another super popular family friendly destination. Virginia Beach has a very similar vibe to Ocean City with a pristine beach, fun boardwalk, super seasonal events and all the family attractions you could want. 

While there, don’t miss the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center , a great aquarium in the area with loads of fun activities for kids!

In Norfolk, kids and adults will love the huge Nauticus museum and the Battleship Wisconsin. The Norfolk Botanical Gardens are stunningly beautiful

A little closer to Baltimore than the Virginia coast, Richmond is full of family friendly activities. Kings Dominion is a super fun amusement park (similar to Dorney Park in Pennsylvania) with Planet Snoopy for younger kids, plenty of thrill rides, and a great waterpark.

Richmond boasts numerous kid-friendly museums like the Science Museum of Virginia, the Children’s Museum of Richmond, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. 

Outdoor adventures are plentiful too! The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is utterly breathtaking (not unlike Longwood Gardens). And the Maymont Estate is the perfect place for an outdoor family afternoon with gardens, an arboretum, a working farm, and a Wildlife Habitat!

Finally, no weekend trip list would be complete without mentioning The Big Apple. New York City is less than 3 hours away from Baltimore. And you don’t even have to drive. Actually, forget your car and hop on the Amtrak for a quick (and very relaxing) train ride into the heart of Manhattan.

Need a Break? 8 Weekend Getaways from Baltimore

Baltimore is known as Charm City for a reason. The Inner Harbor’s waterfront attractions bring tourists from all over. For locals, though, the charm is in the neighborhoods – where the landscape and waterscape of the city make for surprising skyline views from all angles, and often include the winking mascot of Baltimore’s beloved National Bohemian beer. It’s charming alright, hon.

But sometimes, when there’s no O’s game to watch at your corner bar, no synchronized swimming extravaganza in Druid Hill Park, and no kinetic sculpture race at AVAM, you may want to get the heck out of town. Weekend getaways from Baltimore are easy, thanks to its mid- Atlantic location.

Philadelphia Freedom: History and Arts

Philadelphia is a city of contradictions: its colonial beginnings and buttoned-up Main Line society contrast and complement its working class and immigrant heritage. The Philadelphia of the 21st century is proud of its history, while forward-looking and fabulous.

Art lovers know that the Philadelphia Museum of Art houses a vast collection spanning centuries and cultures. Movie lovers know that Rocky Balboa trained by running up its majestic stairs. And everyone loves snapping a picture with the Rocky statue in front of the museum. Bonus: your admission ticket also gets you in to the Barnes Foundation and the Rodin Museum nearby. On the other end of the art spectrum, the folk-art wonderland that is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens draws visitors with its multi-hued mosaics and mazes that will make you wonder just where on earth you are.

Food lovers know the haute cuisine is on point in Philly, just as the cheesesteaks and roast pork are. Every local has a favorite spot for the latter, which is how I learned about John’s Roast Pork. It’s no hidden gem, though – even the James Beard Foundation has recognized their sandwiches. As for the higher end of dining: restaurateur Stephen Starr’s restaurants dot the city map, from the casual Dandelion to the retro glam of Butcher and Singer. 2019’s best restaurant in the country, Zahav, offers Israeli food on its covered patio.

Chincoteague island: seaside calm life.

The island of Chincoteague offers sweeping vistas of marshland by the Atlantic Ocean on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Water is life here, and most folks in the area work and play in the temperate waters of the ocean and inlets. If you don’t take a fishing charter yourself, at least take advantage of some of the freshest seafood around at a waterfront restaurant or one of the seafood joints along Maddox Boulevard.

Generations of children fell in love with the area from afar when they read the original YA pony fic, “Misty of Chincoteague.” Just try to resist the call of the wild ponies, I dare you.

Richmond rad: vibrant downtown gallery scene.

If you prefer a Southern twist for your weekend getaway, Richmond, Virginia has a lot to offer. The city’s Civil War history (it served as the capitol of the Confederacy) is finally taking a backseat to the city’s arts, food, and nature in attracting visitors and new residents.

For arts, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has a vast collection, with spectacular collections of modern and contemporary art, Russian Imperialist Art and Fabergé eggs, as well as Kehinde Wiley’s “Rumors of War” – depicting a majestic African-American man on horseback, addressing the confederate statues that until recently stood tall along nearby Monument Avenue. The museum is open and free every single day of the year, so you can wobble over after your Thanksgiving dinner or set your new year’s resolutions as you wander the galleries.

The Institute of Contemporary Arts on Broad Street is the newest addition to the arts scene, with frequently-changing exhibitions and performances.

Chesapeake bay: family fun and a summer favorite.

A drive down the eastern shore is a perennial summer favorite, but don’t forget the other seasons. Fall is for art and oyster festivals, winter for wildlife, and spring for sublimely serene solitude. Foodies can search for the perfect crab cake, or keep it simple and pick up a few dozen fresh steamed crabs with a healthy shake of Old Bay seasoning.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor’s Center shows the real-life heroics of citizens who helped slaves escape to freedom. If you prefer to enjoy the nature, bring your bike for a silent ride in nearby Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. In winter, you can spot the original snowbirds, the Tundra Swans, on their seasonal escape from Northern Canada.

If you’ve never been there, I’ll bet when you hear the words “Jersey Shore,” you don’t picture sprawling dunes and charming Victorian towns. But those who make the annual pilgrimage “down the shore” know that New Jersey beaches range from the kitschy to the seriously serene.

Avalon and Stone Harbor have seen many generations of repeat visitors from Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York who are drawn by its quiet charm. Avalon has all the things you need for a family week at the beach – a short boardwalk, a small arcade, ice cream shops, pancake houses, miniature golf, and of course, a nice wide beach with lifeguards – but none of the cheesy t-shirt sellers or amusements you’ll find in Wildwood or Seaside.

Deep Creek Lake

Patapsco Valley State Park Campground

Open for camping from the beginning of April to the end of October, Patapsco Valley State Park is a beautiful park located along the Patapsco River that makes a perfect cheap weekend getaway in Maryland.

Pitch a tent for $22 a night and enjoy the outdoors and use the grill in the picnic areas to cook your meals.

The park has over 200 miles of trails that are perfect for hiking and biking, ranging in difficulty, so there is something for everyone. You can also enjoy swimming, boating, and canoeing or kayaking in the Patapsco River. And, if you get a permit, you can go rock climbing .

The park is also home to several historic sites , including the ruins of the old Grist Mill and the B&O Railroad Bridge .

Swallow Falls State Park Campground

Swallow Falls State Park is a beautiful natural area located in Garrett County, Maryland that makes another great affordable weekend destination for outdoorsy people.

The park offers several camping options, the cheapest option is the traditional campsites , but cabins and yurts are also available and reasonably priced. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season.

Campsites include a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern post – all are located near modern bathhouses with hot and cold water.

The park is known for its waterfalls, including Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls . The trails to the waterfalls offer scenic views of the surrounding forest and are suitable for all skill levels.

The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, black bears, and several species of birds. You can enjoy wildlife viewing from the trails or from one of the park’s designated wildlife viewing areas.

The Youghiogheny River is also a popular spot in the park. There you can go on a canoeing or kayaking adventure. Rentals are available from local outfitters, or visitors can bring their own equipment.

Historic Farmhouse, Hagerstown

This beautiful vacation home , located on a working farm, is a perfect place to spend the weekend, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. The house can accommodate up to 6 people and offers all the comforts of home.

You can enjoy hanging out on the porch and take a stroll to explore the grounds. You won’t be far from town where you’ll find shops and restaurants, and a couple of places worth checking out.

Don’t miss the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum and its exhibits on train travel, locomotives, and model trains, as well as the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts , featuring a collection of American art, and the Hagerstown Aviation Museum.

And if you’re visiting with kids, don’t miss the Discovery Station At Hagerstown  with hands-on exhibits on science, technology, and history.

The Hagerstown City Park is a great place to spend some time outdoors. This 50-acre park features a lake, walking trails, a rose garden, and several historic buildings , including the Hager House and the Mansion House Art Center.

Outside of town, you can visit the Antietam National Battlefield which was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. You can either take a self-guided tour of the battlefield or join a guided tour. On your way back, you can make a small detour to visit the Crystal Grottoes Caverns .

Nearby, you’ll find the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park where you can hike, bike, or take a boat tour of the canal.

Historic B&B, Westminster

Minutes away from downtown Westminster and only a short 20-minute drive to historic Gettysburg, PA , this historic B&B is a perfect destination for an inexpensive weekend getaway in Mayland. The house and the rooms are just gorgeous with their antique furnishing and unique style.

Guests can use the kitchen and dining room. The bathroom is shared between 3 rooms.

The city’s downtown area features a variety of shops, art galleries, restaurants , and other businesses, as well as several historic buildings.

You can stop by the Carroll County Farm Museum , a living history museum featuring exhibits on agriculture and rural life in Carroll County. You can tour the historic farmhouse, barns, and other buildings, and participate in special events and programs throughout the year.

You can drive up to Unionville where you can visit the Union Mills Homestead where you’ll find a restored 18th-century grist mill, as well as a historic farmhouse and other buildings. Nearby, stop by the Bear Branch Nature Center featuring exhibits on local wildlife and offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking and birdwatching.

The center is located in the Hashawha Environmental Center where you’ll find 5 miles of multi-use trails.

Maryland Weekend Getaways: City, Beach or Both!

Maryland is big on things to do. You can take a city break, hit the beach, explore US history, or have a hiking adventure in this small but mighty mid-Atlantic state. My youngest daughter, who lives in Washington, DC (home to the epic spring cherry blossom festival ), takes frequent day trips to Maryland. And we also meet her there for weekend getaways from our Brooklyn NY home. It takes less time to drive or take the train to Maryland than it does to Washington, DC and we always find plenty to do.

The “Big” City: Baltimore

Baltimore ranks in the top 50 cities, by population, but its area is more similar to a smaller city like Seattle. This is great news for a city vacation. Many of its cultural institutions and restaurants are concentrated in the downtown area, so you can walk from a museum to dinner, and then to an arena for a baseball or football game.

From art museums to historic sites like Fort McHenry , Baltimore is great for a culture vulture. It also has much to recommend to foodies, from the Italian food in Little Italy or Fells Point to Korean brunch at Dooby’s in Mount Vernon to Maryland blue crab.

There is live music at Power Plant, major league baseball at Camden Yards, and Fort McHenry for history buffs.

Baltimore also excels in family-friendly attractions, located in the Inner Harbor:

• National Aquarium
• Port Discovery Children’s Museum
• Museum of Science

We had planned to explore Annapolis Maryland’s capital city, just as tropical storm Ophelia hit. The adorable historic district, with its brick streets and Victorian houses, wasn’t as charming in the rain. The wind blew in off the Chesapeake Bay and we couldn’t even get a good look at the Maryland State House.

If it’s not raining, take a guided tour of the United States Naval Academy. The Naval Academy also has a museum with the largest collection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century ship models on display in America.

The capital of Maryland, Annapolis is about equidistant from Baltimore and Washington, DC. Take a self-guided tour of the Maryland State House, the oldest state house in America still in continuous legislative use. History buffs also note that it is the first state house designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for migratory birds home to the largest breeding population of American bald eagles on the East Coast. This is a great place to go birding. There are also biking and hiking trails and paddling trails. There are no boat rentals. You have to bring your own boat if you want to go kayaking. There is also a Visitor Center.

The small town of Cumberland boasts the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. You can ride the steam train and get stunning views of the Allegheny Mountains. The ‘gateway to the west’ before St. Louis , Cumberland grew from its location on the railroad between Baltimore and Chicago. The Cumberland Visitor Center has interactive displays, a model of the Paw Paw Tunnel, and a life-size section of a canal boat.

History buffs should check out the Victorian Gordon-Roberts House in the Washington Street Historic District and the Art Deco and Neoclassical Allegheny Museum. Cumberland and the surrounding area is also known for its wineries.

Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Lake, near Cumberland, has many state parks including Deep Creek Lake State Park, with hiking trails, campsites, canoeing, and kayaking. There are golf courses, a ski area with downhill and cross-country skiing, mountain biking, snow tubing, and the longest sledding park on the East Coast.

Near Deep Creek, Oakland calls itself a “great small town”. It has a pedestrian-friendly Main Street and a 19th-century Railroad Station. Swallow Falls State Park has the largest waterfall in Maryland.

Note: The campsite at  Swallow Falls State Park is closed until December 2024.

Ocean City  is a charming beach town. The wooden boardwalk, miles of oceanfront beaches, and local amusement parks make for a classic beach town. There are foodie tours and kayak rentals too.

Bethesda is more than a Washington, DC suburb. One time we were visiting my daughter in DC but we wanted to go to Planta , a high-end vegan restaurant that also has locations in New York, Toronto, and Miami. And Bethesda.

Planta has many amazing dishes, appealing to foodies whether or not they are vegan. The watermelon sushi and spicy Bang Bang broccoli are musts. The cocktails are also delicious.

We took the Metro and discovered a cute small-town feel. There is a children’s museum, KID Museum Bethesda Metro Center, and many restaurants with outdoor seating clustered near the Metro stop. There are even hotels if you want to make this your home base for a weekend getaway.

Outdoor Adventures

On our recent weekend trip, we were seeking outdoor adventures.

Hiking Trails in Maryland

Potomac, Maryland, an easy day trip from Washington, DC, features the Billy Goat Trail, a 4.7-mile hiking trail. This hiking trail includes rock scrambles so dogs are not allowed. There is a flat section along the C&O Canal and the Potomac River where you can bring your dog.

The Great Falls waterfall is not the most dramatic waterfall, but the difficult hike, part of the Chesapeake & Canal National Park, is a rewarding challenge.

For something a little less challenging, take a canal boat ride. Great Falls Canal Boat Rides leave from The Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. The historic site also has interpretive exhibits so you can get a little history with your outdoor adventure.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

Ocean City is not the only place in Maryland to go to the beach. Calvert Cliffs State Park has 13 miles of hiking trails, a sandy beach, and prehistoric fossils. The beach here is part of the Chesapeake Bay.

Where to Stay for a Maryland Weekend Getaway

Baltimore is a great home base for a Maryland weekend getaway. You can choose a bed and breakfast like the 1840s Carrollton Inn,  for a romantic getaway. The inn, a series of connected 19th-century houses, has a vegan breakfast option.

If you are bringing the kids or a dog, choose a boutique hotel on the harbor like  Canopy by Hilton Baltimore Harbor Point . The Canopy by Hilton also offers free bikes for biking around Baltimore.  

For five-star luxury, the boutique hotel The Ivy Hotel,  in Mount Vernon, also has a spa. This is also a great place for a romantic weekend getaway,

Driving Around Maryland

We drove the plug-in hybrid Ford Escape, which comfortably fits 5 passengers and luggage. It has a large panoramic roof that bathes both front and rear passengers in light, wireless charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay.

And the Ford has every safety feature including pedestrian detection, which was quite useful when driving in cities.

The one-touch power windows took a little getting used to. If you want to open the window just an inch or two, you might find yourself opening and closing the window all the way a couple of times until you get the hang of it.

We walked over from our boutique hotel in Baltimore to the American Visionary Art Museum and then saw that right across the street, there was electric vehicle charging. The Maryland House Travel Plaza in Aberdeen, which is only about half an hour from Baltimore, has EV charging for Teslas and other electric vehicles, like the Ford Escape PHEV . But when we wanted to charge in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we were out of luck. We stopped at two service areas; one had only Tesla chargers, and the other had broken chargers for the Ford and another non-Tesla EVS. We had to wait in line to get gas.

But the fuel-efficient Escape gets 40 miles per gallon with gas, and 101 mpg combined gas and electric.

If you want to drive some more, check out Frederick, Maryland’s second-largest city. The Main Street of Frederick is a historic district, lined with art galleries and museums.

Assateague Island National Seashore, a barrier island in the Atlantic Ocean, has miles of sandy beaches and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, home to wild horses.

Offering waterfront real estate along both the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, the state of Maryland is an ideal coastal getaway. This Mid-Atlantic destination is beloved for its popular beach towns, and many families make annual pilgrimages to places like Ocean City for long summer weekends.

The best beaches in Maryland stand out because they're so much more than just attractive stretches of coastline. We also looked for destinations with activities, like kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding, and strolling down boardwalks. Of course, they also deliver photogenic views, whether framed by sandy dunes or marked by a picturesque lighthouse.

If you're planning a trip to coastal Maryland, consider one of these 16 standout destinations.

Assateague Island National Seashore

This uninhabited coastal area (a whopping 48,000 acres) is best known for its incredible wildlife — specifically the hundreds of wild horses that roam the park's beaches. While you cannot ride the wild horses on Assateague Island , you're welcome to bring your own horse for a beachfront stroll.

Visitors can also watch the dolphins playing the waves, or spend long summer days fishing or clamming. The plankton-rich waters are home to a number of fish species, sea turtles, and even whales. Assateague is perhaps Maryland's nicest beach for nature.

The island is divided into two sections: one belonging to Maryland and the other to Virginia. In the Maryland district, you can camp among the wild horses under a sky full of stars. Just be sure to use long tent stakes to ensure your shelter stays firmly anchored in the sand and wind.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

Located on the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay, Calvert Cliffs State Park is one of Maryland's best beaches due to its incredible views and unique history. Surrounded by picturesque sandy cliffs, this quarter-mile-long stretch of beach is perfect for swimming. The park also boasts a picnic area, playground, pond for fishing, and 13 miles of hiking trails.

The real draw, though, is what you might find hidden on its sandy shores. Paleontology enthusiasts will be excited to learn that more than 600 species of fossils — some dating back 20 million years — have been identified here. The park permits visitors to keep any fossils, including shark teeth, they might find on the beach. For the best beachcombing conditions, visit after a storm and during low tide, when more of the beach is exposed.

Ocean City Beach

The 10-mile-long Ocean City Beach is one of Maryland's most popular beaches, luring locals and vacationers alike with plates of steamed crab and attractions galore. The resort town on the Atlantic coast hosts around eight million tourists per year, mostly during summer. This beach can be good for either a quiet getaway or an action-packed family vacation thanks to its two semi-contrasting ends. On the north end, also known as "condo row," you'll find a far more relaxed vibe. However, the south end is home to the famed Thrasher's French Fries and Ocean City Boardwalk . Complete your walk along said pedestrian path with a spin on the antique Trimper Rides carousel .

North Beach

About a mile from the town of Chesapeake Beach, which doesn't have a public beach of its own, North Beach stretches across the bay's western shore. Stroll or cycle along the boardwalk, stopping for an ice cream or funnel cake, to enjoy in the sun. Cast a line off the pier, or walk out to look for bald eagles and Canadian geese. When you get hungry, claim a table overlooking the water at Skipper's Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar , a casual seafood joint serving fish tacos, crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, and Chesapeake Bay oysters charbroiled or on the half shell.

Over at Chesapeake Beach, there are even more activities to enjoy, like a water park , dining options, and the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum .

Sandy Point State Park

A major draw of this beach is its gorgeous views stretching out over the Chesapeake Bay to the Bay Bridge and beyond. In the summer, the beach is staffed by lifeguards, making it a safe option for young swimmers (though the Department of Natural Resources warns that jellyfish frequent the water later in the season). Sandy Point is also a magnet for anglers, partly due to the seasonal availability of boat rentals and a supply-stocked marina store. The beach is part of a state park on the bay's western shore and has an abundance of hiking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds to break up beach days.

Breezy Point Beach & Campground

Breezy Point Beach is set just north of Plum Point, separated from it by Plum Point Creek, on the Chesapeake Bay's western shore. This charming stretch of sand offers all the classic beach activities: camping, swimming, fishing, and picnicking. But you can also comb the land for fossils, shark teeth, and sea glass, or spend an afternoon crabbing for your dinner. The beach is seasonal and often hits capacity in the summer months (at which point visitors will be turned away), so plan accordingly and arrive early if you're thinking of visiting Breezy Point on your Maryland vacation.

Deep Creek Lake

This 1,800-acre state park includes an artificial lake surrounded by sandy shores and forest. With two swimming beaches, 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, a campground, and a hands-on Discovery Center that teaches visitors about the local history and natural resources, it's perfect for beachgoers of all kinds. Deep Creek is the largest lake in Maryland, nestled among mountains in the western part of the state. It's a serene alternative to the crowded coastlines of the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay.

Rocky Point Beach and Park

Situated at the mouths of the Back and Middle rivers, Rocky Point Beach and Park spans 33 acres and has 300 feet of beach. While it isn't huge, it does offer an incredible view of the Chesapeake Bay and Hart-Miller Island, a 1,100-acre island that attracts boaters and birders. With a sailing center, a volleyball court, a fishing pier, and ample picnic tables and shelters, Rocky Point is unsurprisingly a popular summer destination for Marylanders.

Cunningham Falls State Park

It doesn't have the bustling boardwalk and nonstop amusements of Ocean City, but this lakeside beach-inclusive state park has something the Atlantic shoreline doesn't: the tallest cascading waterfall in Maryland. Cunningham Falls is an impressive 78 feet tall and is surrounded by the scenic Catoctin Mountains. The park is also home to the 75-acre artificial Hunting Creek Lake, a hot spot for swimming, boating, and fishing.

Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach

Located on Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay is a public swimming beach marked by a beautiful 1930s-era clubhouse used for weddings and community functions. This beach has a little bit of everything: a mile-long hiking trail offering views of the Bay Bridge, a picnic area, an outdoor amphitheater, and even a separate dog beach adjacent to the public swimming area. Matapeake is just a 20-minute drive over the bridge from Annapolis .

Rocky Gap State Park Beach

Surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and containing what's locally known as the "bluest water in the state," Lake Habeeb is bordered by shores that beckon campers and beachgoers alike. Here, visitors can admire the cliffs and hemlock forest Rocky Gap State Park is known for while swimming in its distinctively clean water. Those inclined to stay overnight can choose from nearly 300 campsites, including cozy cabin and yurt options.

Point Lookout State Park

Point Lookout State Park is located on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. It's home to several historical attractions, including the Point Lookout Lighthouse and a Civil War museum with exhibits on a former camp for Confederate prisoners. The sandy beach here is often lifeguarded and offers grills and picnic tables perfect for gatherings. There are also camping, hiking, fishing, and boating opportunities.

Hammerman Beach

Nestled in Gunpowder Falls State Park about 30 minutes from downtown Baltimore, this beach — officially called the Hammerman Area — offers concessions, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and canoe and kayak rentals from Eastern Watersports . The rental shop also provides lessons and programming during the high season, so beachgoers can take part in yoga, fitness classes, and the like. Otherwise, you can while away the day just by swimming in the (mostly jellyfish-free) Gunpowder River and hiking the local trails.

Hart-Miller Island

Hart-Miller Island gives the true remote experience that Kent Island and others accessible by road can't provide. That's because getting there requires riding a private boat across part of the Chesapeake Bay and wading in shallow water from the boat to shore. The barrier of entry keeps this 1,100-acre state park relatively quiet and maintains its locals-only feel. It's great for swimming, fishing, and hiking to bay viewpoints on more than eight miles of trails. You can also camp and rent bicycles — for free! — in the South Cell of the island.

Betterton Beach

This beach is north-facing and located at the end of a pastoral peninsula. It's closer to Wilmington, Delaware, than any of Maryland's metro areas and offers a charming small-town atmosphere for a relaxing Chesapeake Bay retreat. Families will have no problem finding a quiet patch of sand to sprawl on, as well as volleyball nets and picnic areas to help keep everyone fed and entertained.

North East Beach

Not to be confused with North Beach more than two hours away, North East Beach is part of Elk Neck State Park, an area on a peninsula popular for outdoor recreation and the historic Turkey Point Lighthouse. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and picnicking are common pastimes in the beach area, but the park also has more than 2,000 acres of marshland, forest, and white-clay cliffs to explore when you crave a break from the water. Elk Neck is also conveniently outfitted with a supplies store, beach showers, and a playground.

Chesapeake Beach

Chesapeake Beach is a quaint bayside town in Calvert County, Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay. The town was founded in 1896 by the Chesapeake Bay Railway Company who create a resort along the railway for people who wanted to take day trips from Washington D.C. which is only 28 miles away. The Chesapeake Beach Railway Resort was closed in 1935, but the communities from Chesapeake Beach and North Beach support the area with popular outdoor bay activities, a public school and both year-round and summer homes. This beach is a great place for families who love water recreation. Chesapeake Beach features a marina with boating opportunities, a water park, the Railway Museum, and Veterans Memorial Park. There are also many places for world-class oceanfront dining and several festivals that occur annually.

Cumberland, a Day Trip from Baltimore

American history buffs will enjoy Cumberland, a historic town once used as one of George Washington’s military outposts. Cumberland was also nicknamed “gateway to the west” by the early pioneers. You can still visitor George Washington’s one-room cabin headquarters from when he worked for General Braddock. The Cumberland Arts and Entertainment District is just over two hours from Baltimore. Visitors to Cumberland can take Western Maryland Scenic Railroad trip to the town of the Allegheny Mountains to learn about railway history and take in the beautiful mountain scenery. The city is also home to C & O Canal National Historical Park and Visitors Center, several historical landmarks, and host to several annual festivals.

Thrill-seeking and American history go hand-in-hand when visitors come to Frederick where they can kayak on the bay before visiting a museum then spending the evening at a lush martini bar. Many of the Civil War-era buildings still stand amongst boutiques, art galleries, performance theaters, and museums. Frederick is centrally located to Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Gettysburg and has some of the best water and mountain views along the east coast. Visitors who want to spend time outdoors can tour the wineries, hike the Appalachian Trail, or visit the remnants of battlefields. The family-friendly town also features a wildlife preserve, children’s museum, Adventure Park USA, Harpers Ferry Adventure Center, and several orchards.
