MySpace's The List Presents Free Concert with My Chemical Romance at Avalon - October 5, 2006

The line-up for the upcoming When We Were Young festival has dropped and, rejoice – it’s a good day to be an emo.

It doesn’t actually seem that long ago since you’d be foraging the Rock aisle of HMV, watching Kerrang! for hours in the hopes of seeing that one song you’re currently obsessed with, and flipping through magazines to find My Chemical Romance posters.

But really – it was a long time ago. So long in fact, that a festival aimed at those HMV, Kerrang!, MCR fans is called When We Were Young.

But thankfully, the downright incredible line-up for the Las Vegas festival helps ease that sting just a little.

It would be very easy to look at the poster for the festival and think it’s an advert for a nostalgia DJ set at a local rock club – but it is very, very real.

So what is the lineup for When We Were Young festival, where is it being held and how can you get tickets?

Who is headlining When We Were Young 2022?

hayley williams paramore

The When We Were Young festival boasts probably one of the best line-ups of any festival ever, and we don’t think that’s an exaggeration.

Headlining the festival are icons My Chemical Romance, as well as Paramore, two of the biggest names on the scene in the 2000s, who still have a huge dedicated following.

Other massive names include Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, The All American Rejects, Avril Lavigne, Bright Eyes, Jimmy Eat World, AFI, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, Alkaline Trio, Pierce The Veil and I Prevail.

There’s also the smaller, but still iconic bands of the time: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hawthorne Heights, The Story So Far, Mayday Parade, The Starting Line, Thursday, Motionless In White, Dance Gavin Dance, Boys Like Girls, Sleeping With Sirens, Senses Fail, Silverstein, Story Of The Year, 3OH!3, We The Kings, The Ready Set, Four Year Song, Saosin, and Atreyu.

And that’s not all: the stage will also be graced by Neck Deep, State Champs, The Linda Lindas, Meet Me At The Altar, Prentiss, Royal & The Serpent, Manchester Orchestra, The Wonder Years, Knocked Loose, Jxdn, Car Seat Headrest, Ice Nine Kills, Nessa Barrett, Wolf Alice, TV Girl, Pvris, Horrorpops, La Dispute, Palaye Royale, Anberlin, Armor For Sleep, The Wonder Years, Mom Jeans, Lilhuddy and more.

The only issue? Trying to fit everyone in.

When are the When We Were Young 2022 festival dates?

'Wetten, dass..?' in Basel

Incredibly, despite the absolutely massive line-up, When We Were Young festival all takes place over just one day.

The dozens of iconic bands will take to the stage on October 22, 2022 for 12 hours of angst, moshing and serious nostalgia.

When We Were Young will begin at 11am and end at 11pm.

Where is When We Were Young 2022 taking place?

Bring Me The Horizon Perform At Manchester Arena

The festival is taking place in the United States, so if you’re hoping to go from the UK it will be a bit more difficult, but not impossible.

And with a line-up like that, there’s going to be a lot of former emos flying in from abroad.

My Chemical Romance, Paramore and the rest of the fantastic line-up will play in Las Vegas, Nevada on the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on October 22, 2022.

How to get tickets to When We Were Young 2022?

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - OCTOBER 23: Avril Lavigne performs at the 2022 When We Were Young Festival at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on October 23, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images)

The first weekend of the When We Were Young festival has come to an end. The pop-punk event, which included performances by My Chemical Romance, Paramore , Avril Lavigne , Taking Back Sunday and many more, started out on a rocky foot as they were forced to cancel day one due to high winds .

Luckily, Sunday’s show was able to go on without a hitch for 60,000 attendees, and Variety was there to witness it all. Below, we’re breaking down all the highs and lows of the show — including top performances and what the festival can do better next year.

Popular on Variety

High: Raising Awareness

One of the first bands to take the stage on Sunday was Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, who ended their set with their hit song “Face Down.” After the song, which is about domestic violence, singer Ronnie Winter shared free resources for those experiencing abuse, directing them to DomesticShelters.org .

High: Paramore Opens Strong

High: Avril Brings a Surprise

Not only did Avril Lavigne play all her hits, she also was joined by All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat for a cover of Blink-182‘s “All The Small Things.” Blink is scheduled to headline the 2023 When We Were Young festival.

High: Boys Like Girls Go Back in Time

After playing their set, which included “Hero/Heroine,” “Love Drunk” and “Two Is Better Than One,” Boys Like Girls began their final song, “The Great Escape,” and stopped about eight seconds in. They then asked the crowd to put their phones away for the next three minutes and 28 seconds to perform it as they did in 2006. “When we were young, we didn’t have this shit,” singer Martin Johnson said. “This is how it should be done. I hope you got your TikToks already!”

Low: Sound Issues

With any first-time festival, hiccups are likely. However, when Dashboard Confessional performed on the Pink Stage — one of the main stages — the audio completely went out. In fact, for the first two minutes, Chris Carrabba and the band performed seemingly without realizing that no one could hear them. After they found out — likely noticing that everyone was booing or just standing in the crowd confused, they took 10 minutes of their 40-minute set window to attempt to fix it. Ultimately, only the bass was really audible. They played the rest of their set, but by the end, fans were listening to other fans sing “Hands Down” with a very faint version of Carrabba’s voice in the background.

Low: The Layout

The setup at the festival could definitely have been a bit easier to navigate. With lines not being guided or wrapped around efficiently, as well as certain vendor stands sticking out in strange locations, attendees were forced to walk a far distance just to get somewhere that could have been a straight shot.

High: Hydration and Restrooms

That said, one thing that did work in the layout was the multiple restroom locations, which meant very minimal wait times — an important plus since there were also numerous hydration stands for fans to fill up their water bottles and avoid dehydration. Plus, with the many bars (and 21+ wristband rules being strictly enforced), multiple stalls were a must.

When We Were Young 2022 review: the nostalgic emo-fest reigns in a new age of pop-punk

Las Vegas, Nevada, October 23: Facing scrutiny and anticipation, the fest delivers an optimistic first instalment

Paramore

As soon as When We Were Young was announced back in January, would be attendees across social media dubbed it “emo fyre-fest” . To be fair, there was a myriad of reasons naysayers had doubts: the festival would be taking place in the middle of the desert off the Las Vegas strip, and the jam-packed post-punk line-up of over 60 bands seemed impossible considering it would all have to take place in just 12 hours.

Still, last weekend on Saturday, October 22, it seemed the impossible was finally going to take place. But, unfortunately, the first day of the fest was cancelled due to a high-wind advisory in Nevada , leaving would-be attendees wary about whether or not When We Were Young was ever going to live up to its hype.

Luckily, on Sunday, October 23, as gates finally open, it’s clear that the emo scene’s new music festival would defy the worst expectations , proving the impossible possible, and making many naysayers wish they’d snagged tickets.

When We Were Young Fans

Right off the bat, the festival stays true to its marketing with early-aughts emo favourites like Mayday Parade and Boys Like Girls giving fans the day’s first dose of nostalgia. Mayday Parade’s lead singer Derek Sanders makes sure to emphasize the lyrics “I had a dream last night / We drove out to see Las Vegas” from their 2007 hit ‘Jamie All Over’ to the crowd’s glee.

Later on the festival’s Pink Stage, Boys Like Girls lead singer Martin Johnson wants fans to have an authentic 2006 experience when he awkwardly stops playing ‘The Great Escape’ mid-way, asking the audience to stop recording the performance and put their phones away.

Part of the genre-focused music festival’s best moments comes by way of inevitable live collaborations, and Sunday’s acts deliver. Kellin Quinn of Sleeping with Sirens joins Pierce The Veil to rock out to ‘King For The Day’. As the sun goes down, Taking Back Sunday brings out unlikely guest DJ Steve Aoki to perform their new single ‘Just Us Two’ — a  confusing choice for many audience members who aren’t aware of the collab. The best surprise moment, however, comes by way of All Time Low’s lead singer Alex Gaskarth and lead guitarist Jack Barakat joining Avril Lavigne to cover Blink-182’s pop-punk classic ‘All The Small Things’ as “elder emos” with their younger counterparts in the crowd collectively losing their minds.

Recommended

Avril Lavigne

Lavigne delivers fan favourites ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘My Happy Ending’ with a wild burst of energy, but it’s clear she’s battling sound issues that plague most of the artists’ sets throughout the day. But sound issues can’t stand against the pop-punk princess, belting out the ballad, ‘Bite Me’ — a moment that also sees her bringing out fiancée and fellow musician Mod Sun — before transporting the audience back to 2002 with an acoustic track off her first record ‘I’m with You’.

As the night dwindles on and a desert chill creeps up on fans, it’s clear festival goers in the pit are starting to feel the toll of the long day. But that all changes when Bring Me The Horizon take the Black Stage, electrifying the tiring crowd.

Opening with ‘Can You Feel My Heart’, lead singer Oli Sykes screams his heart out and riles up an amassing crowd of thousands of people to jump, mosh, punch and scream along. Sykes even taunts the crowd, shouting, “now if you don’t jump, you’re a fucking shithead!”  By the middle of their set, the whole crowd is roaring the lyrics of ‘Shadow Moses’ back at the Bring Me The Horizon while stage flames frame the head-banging band, right before the intense yearning of ‘Drown’ turns the notch up on the energy levels at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.

Paramore

The most exciting acts of the night are, unsurprisingly, the most anticipated headliners: Paramore and My Chemical Romance, two bands that have paved the way for and inspired most of the bands on the lineup.

Paramore shocks the crammed crowd, opening with the live debut of deep-cut ‘All I Wanted’ — a song they usually don’t play live due to the strain it puts on vocalist Hayley Williams. Of course, Williams nails it and hits each high note with expert precision. Another notable addition to Paramore’s setlist is arguably one of the best of their discography: ‘Last Hope’, a track that feels cinematic against the backdrop of Las Vegas lights.

True to herself, Williams takes her precious time on stage, reflecting on what everyone is celebrating at When We Were Young. “Tonight we’re celebrating emo,” Williams starts before delving into the scene’s history. “ … But we got lost along the way and, in the early 2000s, when Paramore came onto the scene … the scene was not always a safe place to be if you were different.” The formidable frontwoman goes on to explain how emo music has often been a space for white cis men. As Paramore builds into their breakthrough hit ‘Misery Business’ Williams promises to always provide a safe space for “young women, people of colour and the queer community.”

My Chemical Romance

Finally, emo scene founding fathers My Chemical Romance take the stage. In a hilarious subversion and nod to the festival name, lead singer Gerard Way not only dresses in his classic early 2000s era black suit and red tie , but also wears ageing makeup and prosthetics. The band brings a whole new meaning to “elder emo,” almost as if to remind fans “we’re not young anymore, and neither are you.”

Elder emo status aside, MCR still shows the crowd of 60,000 fans they can bring new life to old favourites. ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’ and ‘Helena’ take on a fresh light with the band still leaning into the theatrical stage presence they’re known for. The band performs a setlist that encompasses most of their varied discography, but they notably (and thankfully) don’t play new songs. This calculated feat continues until the band closes the night with ‘Vampire Money’, leaving revellers in a hazy glow of nostalgia, joy, and fireworks that fill up the Vegas sky on the last note.

It takes a lot to live up to the hype and pull off what many thought was impossible, but as fans head back into the desert in their checkered vans with wide smiles across their faces, it’s safe to say the emo fest was not only a party for those desiring nostalgia but proof positive of a more inclusive post-punk future.

When We Were Young 2023 in Las Vegas: Set times, lineup, tickets, how to get there

When We Were Young 2023 returns to Las Vegas this weekend for two days of pop-punk with headlining sets by Green Day and Blink-182 .

It’s the same lineup both days with artists performing on four stages — Green, Pink, Ghost and Stripe.

Green Day will, of course, be headlining the Green Stage.

At last year's When We Were Young festival, My Chemical Romance and a reunited Paramore topped a bill that also featured two of Arizona's biggest bands you might expect to find in such company, Jimmy Eat World and the Maine .

The 2023 festival also features two great Arizona artists — folk-punk legends AJJ (formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad) and Michelle Branch, the Sedona native who named her double-platinum breakthrough, 2001's "The Spirit Room," after a corner saloon in a haunted historic hotel in Jerome.

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re going to When We Were Young 2023.

From Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England will be able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

This will then be granted from September.

Check if you're eligible  here  - or read on for our explainer on free childcare across the UK.

Three and four year olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two year olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of last month, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine months old

In September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents.

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs.

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

Two big economic moments dominated the news agenda in Money this week - interest rates and GDP.

As expected, the Bank of England held the base rate at 5.25% on Wednesday - but a shift in language was instructive about what may happen next.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey opened the door to a summer cut to 5%, telling reporters that an easing of rates at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on 20 June was neither ruled out nor a fait accompli.

More surprisingly, he suggested that rate cuts, when they start, could go deeper "than currently priced into market rates".

He refused to be drawn on what that path might look like - but markets had thought rates could bottom out at 4.5% or 4.75% this year, and potentially 3.5% or 4% next.

"To make sure that inflation stays around the 2% target - that inflation will neither be too high nor too low - it's likely that we will need to cut Bank rate over the coming quarters and make monetary policy somewhat less restrictive over the forecast period," Mr Bailey said.

You can read economics editor Ed Conway's analysis of the Bank's decision here ...

On Friday we discovered the UK is no longer in recession.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics said.

This followed two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking.

The data was more positive than anticipated.

"Britain is not just out of recession," wrote Conway. "It is out of recession with a bang."

The UK has seen its fastest growth since the tailend of the pandemic - and Conway picked out three other reasons for optimism.

1/ An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth". It's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates.

2/ 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

3/ Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter.

GDP per head is a more accurate yardstick for the "feelgood factor", said Conway - perhaps meaning people will finally start to feel better off.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show.

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent.

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

Let's get you up to speed on the biggest business news of the past 24 hours.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tata confirmed last month it was to press ahead with the closure of the blast furnaces at the plant, replacing them with electric arc furnaces to reduce emissions and costs.

In doing so, the company rejected an alternative plan put forward by the Community, GMB and Unite unions that, they said, would raise productivity and protect jobs across the supply chain.

Rishi Sunak has told Sky News that the UK exiting recession shows the economy has "turned a corner".

He told our economics editor Ed Conway : "I am pleased that while there's more work to do, today's figures show that the economy now has real momentum, and I'm confident that with time, people will start to feel the benefits of that.

"We've had multiple months now where wages are rising, energy bills have fallen, mortgage rates are down and taxes are being cut... I'm pleased with the progress that we're making."

Mr Sunak added: "I am confident the economy is getting healthier every week."

Lidl will increase staff wages for the third time in 12 months, the supermarket has announced.

Shop workers in London will get £13.65, up from £13.55, while staff elsewhere will get a rise from a minimum £12 to £12.40 - at a cost of £2.5m to Lidl.

The supermarket invested £37m in pay increases in March, on top of £8m in September - a total of more than £50m in the past 12 months.

The increase comes into effect from 1 June.

Lidl GB chief executive Ryan McDonnell said: "As we continue to expand, we are welcoming more customers and attracting more colleagues into the business every day.

"It's absolutely right, therefore, that we continue to offer industry-leading pay."

Tech giant Apple has apologised after an advert for its new iPad model prompted outrage.

The ad promoting the thinnest-ever iPad shows creative tools including cameras, books, paint cans and musical instruments being crushed in an industrial press.

But many, including celebrities like Hugh Grant, decried the crushing of artistic objects.

In a statement released to Ad Age, Tor Myhren, Apple's vice president of marketing communications, said: "Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it's incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world.

"Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry."
