Allow us to introduce you to our winemakers and share with you the true spirit of Washington wine.
Boutique Wineries of Washington
Some of the best wines in Washington are made by small wineries. Join us for an inside look at what it takes to make some of the most highly sought-after boutique wines.
Wine Blending Workshop
Be a winemaker for a day! Making wine is science. Blending wine is art.
Getting Around Woodinville
With over 120 wineries and four distinct wine districts, Woodinville Wine Country presents a mind-boggling array of options. To help make your trip easier, we’ve compiled the best options for making your way from one taste to another.
ARRIVE BY CAR, PROCEED ON FOOT
Getting to Woodinville by car is an easy drive from almost anywhere in the Greater Seattle Area, with easy access from I-405, WA-522, and WA-520. Uber and Lyft services are available here, and larger venues and events offer designated pick-up and drop-off lots. Most of the wine districts are walkable, so plan your day around one district, park once, and spend the day strolling and sipping.
TWO-WHEELING IT
Biking is one the easiest, most enjoyable ways to get around wine country. The Hollywood and West Valley districts are easily accessible by bicycle from both the Burke-Gilman and Sammamish River trails. Parking the car at Bothell Landing (where there’s a convenient LimeBike station) it’s a flat, three-mile ride along the river to Woodinville. Coming from the Eastside, park at Marymoor Park in Redmond and pedal through the Sammamish Valley to the Hollywood District. Another option is to bring your bike aboard Metro Transit, get off at the Woodinville Park & Ride, and pedal from there.
Take your mind off the road and put it squarely on the reserve by leaving the driving and parking to one of our local wine tour professionals. Fewer vehicle worries and a seasoned guide to the best wine experiences can make all the difference between a good and a great day of tasting. Take a look at our tour providers that offer a variety of options – from private town car to shuttle bus or even a 15-person party bike – to create your ultimate tasting tour.

The Best Wineries to Visit in Woodinville
By Sean P. Sullivan January 11, 2023
Bordeaux-style wines meet picnic priorities at Matthews Winery.
Image: Brandon Hill
Western Washington's epicenter of wine dates back to the 1970s. Today, change is sweeping the area, from new tasting districts to the uncertain future of Chateau Ste. Michelle. In other words, Woodinville has lots of exciting new developments, but also some reasons to return, time and again, to taste.
Hollywood District / Warehouse District / Downtown and Woodin Creek Village / Eastern Washington Outposts
Hollywood District
Betz family winery.
Now firmly in its third decade, Betz Family devotes itself to high-end Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines. The cabernet sauvignon is exquisite. Four syrahs showcase differences in the state’s best vineyards and appellations, while the grenache-heavy Besoleil drinks like a cup of fresh fruit. The tasing room is currently only open to members of the winery’s list.
Chateau Lill
Greg Lill has reclaimed the estate-style building that once housed his original winery, DeLille Cellars. Today it’s a scenic hub for weddings and events, but also conducts tastings of wines sourced from other well-known local wineries, but poured under Chateau Lill’s label. In warmer months, tastings happen in the garden, or you can stroll the property, glass in hand.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
Yes, some or all of this wine region’s foundational chateau is potentially up for sale, but the winery is committed to its 2023 concert calendar season. And, uncertainty aside, it remains a wonderful place to visit in Woodinville. Throughout its run, Ste. Michelle has been the state’s leader in producing good wines at any price. A spot-on $12 bottle? A stunning single-vineyard sauvignon blanc? The winery has both. Its $10 Dry Riesling is easily the best value in the state if not the country.

DeLille Cellars

Gorman Winery

Jaine Cottage
The Jaine Cottage is all about white, rosé, and sparkling wine.

Mark Ryan Winery
Winemaker Mark McNeilly made a name for himself in the early 2000s fashioning uniformly excellent red blends, with ripe fruit and hefty tannic structures, from esteemed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard on Red Mountain. He’s still at it; few do it better. This year, the tasting room will relocate to a new building on the campus of the former Redhook Brewery.
Matthews Winery
Matthews is one of the longest tenured wineries in Woodinville. Yes, with its “inspired by Bordeaux” tagline, you know cabernet sauvignon is important here, but the sauvignon blanc is also a standout. The winery recently brought in a new winemaking team from Quilceda Creek .
Novelty Hill–Januik
IMAGE: COURTESY NOVELTY HILL
Sparkman Cellars
Warehouse district, avennia wine.
In just 10 years, Avennia has established itself as one of the state’s top wineries, dedicated to using old vine grapes and picking early, giving the releases a distinctly old-world, savory edge, but with plenty of fruit. Recently the winery has added some Red Mountain offerings to its repertoire.
Callan Cellars
Cedergreen cellars, damsel cellars.

Kevin White Winery
Owner and winemaker Kevin White’s day job allows him to offer the best quality-to-price wines in the state. But the word is out on his pure, fruit-driven wines. Some, such as the feels-like-stealing ‘Blue Label’ wine, can sell out in less than a week. A new tasting room offers a gently upgraded experience.
Passing Time Winery
Pomum cellars/idlico, quiddity wines.
Giant chess (and regular-size pours) at Quiddity Wines.
Sightglass Cellars
Sean Boyd, previously the longtime winemaker at Woodinville Wine Cellars, excels with stainless steel–aged sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, as well as cultishly good red wines.
Two Vintners
W.t. vintners.
W.T. Vintners winemaker Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen and, in his tasting room, the vending machine of our dreams.
Downtown and Woodin Creek Village
Baer winery, brian carter cellars.
This winery, now open in the new-ish Woodin Creek Village , dedicates itself to the art of blending. The flagship cabernet sauvignon–based Solesce is one for the cellar. That may not sound radical, but the winemaker here likes to experiment, exploring styles from Spain, Italy, Bordeaux, the Rhône, and beyond.
More Great Woodinville Tasting Rooms
Can’t make it to Walla Walla ? Plenty of wineries from Eastern Washington have set up satellite locations around here.
Walla Walla–based Long Shadows added this outpost on our side of the mountains.
Image: Courtesy Long Shadows
- Long Shadows Great wine in a handsome tasting room.
- Fidelitas Wines One of the new occupants of the former Redhook Brewery campus.
- Bookwalter Winery The Tri-Cities–area winery is known for its high-end reds and whites.
- L’Ecole No 41 The stalwart added its first non–Walla Walla tasting room in downtown Woodinville.
- Valdemar Estates Part of Walla Walla’s impressive new guard also has a downtown location.
- Pepper Bridge Another great high-end Walla Walla winery set up shop behind the Hollywood Schoolhouse.
Methods : To compile this list, Sean P. Sullivan selected wineries based on the overall quality of their wines, focusing largely on those that are local to that area, versus satellite tasting rooms.

Washington is a powerhouse of grape growth, and the state's wine industry is booming. But since most vineyards are way out east, farther than most will travel for a good drink, wineries have set up satellite outposts, congregating particularly in Woodinville, a short jaunt northeast of Seattle.
Woodinville Wine Country is exploding with more than 100 tasting rooms and wineries. That's staggering, making it tough to get a handle on the best. That's where this guide comes in.
From the household-name producers with grand estates to the family-owned outfits tucked away in strip malls, here are the best places to drink wine in Woodinville.
Note: Map points are listed geographically, not ranked by preference. Don't see your favorite tasting room on the map? Show it some love in the comments, send us an email , or start a forum thread in its honor.
Patterson Cellars
Patterson Cellars is known for irreproachable wines. The company produces more than a dozen options on a constantly rotating menu, keeping every visit interesting.
- Open in Google Maps
Pondera Winery
Supremely well-balanced reds and Bordeaux-style blends are highlights here, and the tasting room features rotating art by Northwest artists.
William Church Winery
Award-winning winery William Church operates two tasting room locations in Woodinville: one open on weekends in the Warehouse district and another in the Hollywood district open daily. The wines are all solid, but the viognier is a standout.
Obelisco Winery
Obelisco pours estate-grown wines from its 30-acre vineyard on the southwestern slope of Red Mountain. These wines are known for their complexity, and Obelisco's tasting room is a comfy, accessible place to sip and learn.
J. Bookwalter Tasting Room
Working with some of the most prestigious vineyards in Eastern and Central Washington, J. Bookwalter produces impressive reds and whites. The Woodinville tasting room is welcoming, with leather couches inside and a patio outside.
Gorman Winery
Small but mighty, Gorman Winery doesn't shy away from big reds, focusing on varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The labels are as bold as the flavors, with names like Evil Twin, Big Sissy, and Bully. Friday nights bring live music to the tasting room.

Long Shadows Tasting Room
There's a lot of wine-making muscle behind the Long Shadows label, which involves seven accomplished vintners from around the world. Long Shadows' seven Columbia Valley wines are all available for sampling at the tasting room.
This boutique winery sources its grapes from the Red Mountain AVA, highly respected for its bold flavors. Fidelitas offers tasting flights and wines by the glass for lingering.
àMaurice Cellars
As fifth-generation Washingtonians, the Schafer family knows its stuff. The wines here, made with Blue Mountain grapes, are critically acclaimed and pair well with food.
JM Cellars is a family-owned winery sourcing from a wide variety of Columbia Valley vineyards. The tasting room and surrounding garden are a great place to sip, too, especially on a sunny day.
DeLille Carriage House Tasting Room
DeLille hangs its hat on being the only winery in the world chosen for both the Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wines of the World lists for two consecutive years. Its romantic Carriage House has three terraces and a large indoor tasting room.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington State’s oldest winery and a great place to kick off a visit to Woodinville thanks to an excellent free tour that gives newbies a better understanding of the state's wine industry. Oh, and the summer concert series on the lawn is a must.

Snoqualmie Falls weather & web cam
Experience the essence of Washington’s wild beauty and independent winemaking on this day tour to Snoqualmie Falls and boutique wineries. Join a few other travelers (each trip is ten people or fewer) and a TripAdvisor ‘Hall of Fame’ guide on an exploration of Seattle’s legendary backyard. Don’t worry – we’ll take care of absolutely everything! Start your tour at 270-foot-high Snoqualmie Falls, where you’ll watch the mighty waters plunge into the river canyon below. The waterfall is nestled among the big evergreen trees of the western Cascade Mountains, which cut across the state and divide the lush coastal climates of the West from the dry, vineyard-rich regions of the East. While there are hundreds are winemakers producing wine in western Washington, they all traverse this range to harvest their grapes in the fall and bring them back West to press, ferment, and blend. After exploring Snoqualmie Falls, you’ll explore Washington’s viticulture with tastings at two or three local wineries (depending on the season) that deliver on elegance but leave pretense at the door. We hand select our winery partners for their top notch wines of course, but equally as important, for the exclusive experience provided to our guests. You’ll meet with the passionate winemakers themselves and learn about their journey into the industry and inspiration behind their wines. You’ll receive the dedicated time of a tasting room manager to walk us through the art of wine tasting and often we are invited behind the scenes to experience the production space of a working winery —all while tasting award-winning varietals rarely found outside of Washington State. While Washington is the second largest wine-producer in the country, it only exports 1% of its wine! If you’re staying in downtown Seattle (hotel, Airbnb, etc.), we’ll pick you up! We will call the day before your trip to confirm the exact timing. We’re bringing a fresh, local, family-style lunch to pair with our wine tasting! Snacks, sparkling water, and water are provided all day.
Please note that this experience features visits to wineries and tasting rooms. If you are interested in a vineyard experience, we recommend our Mt. Rainier and Yakima Valley Wine Tasting trip (available from July thru October).
SAMPLE ITINERARY (May – October)
9:30-10a downtown pickups.
Generally, our last pickup each tour occurs at The Sheraton Grand in Seattle. This isn’t always the case—so check with us—but we consider it a default location for anyone staying outside of downtown. Let our team know where you’re staying and we’ll do everything we can to make your pickup as easy as possible.
10:20a Bellevue Area Pickup (Upon Request)
We’re happy to offer a centralized pickup option en route to Snoqualmie Falls upon request. On our wine tour we can offer pick-ups at:
Bellevue Area: Hyatt Regency Bellevue. 900 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA 98004.
10:45a Big Views and a Nature Walk at Snoqualmie Falls
From here, the course of your day can go so many ways. Your guide will combine group preferences, weather considerations, mixed access & highlights, crowd avoidance, and more to create a lovely day. No two trips are the same! We’re extremely likely to change wineries from day to day to give you the best possible experience.
12p Wine Tasting and Lunch
Delightful tastings at one of our favorite wineries in the region. You’re likely to stay put for a relaxed lunch after some wine tasting.
2p More Wine Tasting

We’re likely to choose three different wine partners that focus on different styles, tastes, processes, and even owners/producers with different personalities.

Q: What is the difference between this tour in the summer vs winter (and why is there a price difference)? A: During the summer, we take advantage on the long sunny days and explore three different wineries on this tour and we expect to return to Seattle around 6:00pm. During the winter months (November – April), when the days are shorter, we visit two Washington wineries and enjoy a more relaxed pace throughout the tour. We expect to return to Seattle around 4:30pm. The price is adjusted based the number of tasting fees included and overall length of the expereince.
Q: How much walking/hiking should I expect on this tour? A: This experience includes an optional 0.7mile walk downhill from the upper to lower falls viewing areas. You will experience some descent on this trail as you haed down to river level, but the good news is you only have to walk one way! Your guide will meet you at the bottom with the van. If anyone does not feel comfortable participating in this walk, you can choose to ride back down with the guide and meet up with the group at the bottom
Q: How many wineries do we visit? A: From May-October, we visit 3 wineries. From November-April, we visit 2 wineries.
Q: Do you recommend we purchase bottles of wine from the wineries? A: If you find a wine or wines that you love (and we think you will!), we absolutely recommend buying a bottle or two of your favorites at each of the wineries! Wine tasting is about exploring and trying new wines you might not have come across before, and by bringing them home with you, you can reminisce about your trip to the Pacific Northwest each time you open a bottle. On top of that, only 1% of wine from Washington (and exclusively from only two wineries) is exported out of the state, so you will never be able to find these blends back home!
Pro-Tip: If you’re worried about traveling with wine, most wineries will ship bottles back home for you or if you fly Alaska Airlines, you can check an entire case of wine for free!
Q: Are children allowed to join this tour? A: Since this tour involves alcoholic beverages, all guests must be 21 years or older. If you are looking for an experience that is great for the whole family, check out some of our other tours like the Deception Pass and Whidbey Island Day Tour , the Mount Rainier National Park Tour , or the Leavenworth Winter Experience , all of which are perfect for kids ages 10 and up!

A Local’s Guide to the Best Woodinville Wineries
Looking for the best Woodinville wineries? You’ve come to the right place.
I’ve visited just about every wine region in the Pacific Northwest and have written guides to the best Washington and Oregon wineries . Since I have a near reverence for wine, I’m constantly researching places to try and sipping my way through different wine region.
Washington is home to some of the best wine in the world, and people living or exploring Seattle have a great wine tasting area nearby: Woodinville. This wine-loving town is about a 30-minute drive from Seattle and has more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms.
I’ve explored most of the wine districts in Woodinville, so I’ll break down the areas and give you a local’s perspective on the best Woodinville wineries to visit. I’ll also share my private Woodinville wineries map so you can create your own wine tasting itinerary.
This post has affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no cost to you if you click on them and make a purchase. This is a small way I earn money to support this site. If links aren’t showing up for you , turn off your ad blocking software. Thank you for your support!
The Woodinville, WA Wine Districts
Most Woodinville wineries do not grow their grapes in Woodinville. That’s because the cooler, wetter Seattle-area climate isn’t ideal for growing. Most grapes are grown in eastern Washington, so a lot of the wineries in Woodinville are outposts of their parent winery out east or buy their grapes from vineyards.
The wineries are organized into technically 4 districts, but the “Downtown District” only has food and no wine so it does not exist in my mind :P. The 3 districts with wineries include the Hollywood, Warehouse, and West Valley districts. Most of the wineries can be found in the Hollywood and Warehouse districts, and some wineries even have outposts in both areas.
The Woodinville Wine Country official site has a great map of Woodinville wineries outlining all the areas. This is handy if you want to get a full lay of the land, but my Woodinville winery map below will outline the best wineries to seek out.
My recommendation is to focus on one area per day so you can hit up more wineries!
Getting to Woodinville
Real talk: getting to Woodinville from Seattle can be a real slog. It’s only 30 minutes away, but it’s a long trip to take using public transit. When you’re drinking, figuring out how to safely get around can be enough to pull your hair out! To avoid this, here are my recommendations if you don’t have a designated driver.
Option 1: Ride share in and out the same day
If you have 1-4 people, just take an Uber or Lyft if you want to do a full day of tastings. It will be about $45 each way during non-peak hours and you can choose one district and walk between wineries. Or, if you want to check out multiple districts and you’re traveling May – Sept, you can hop on Woodinville’s Cellar Hopper bus, which runs regularly in a loop through all the districts.
Option 2: Hire a designated driver
If you have 5-12 people, plus access to enough cars to fit everyone, I highly recommend using Main Street Drivers . Think of them as the Airbnb of designated drivers. For $35/hour ($40/hour on weekends) plus a 20% gratuity, you can hire someone to drive you to Woodinville and between wineries using your car.
This is generally more affordable than renting a party bus because you’re not paying for a company that has to maintain its own vehicles. Especially if you don’t have enough people to fill said party bus, this could be an economical and fun option.
How it works: Simply tell Main Street Drivers when you want to be picked up, how long your trip will be, and if they need to pick up other passengers (which is included in the price!). One of their insured and background checked drivers will meet you at your first pickup location wearing a suit.
During your trip, your driver will drop you off at the winery and park your car. When you’re done, you just text them and they pick you up. They wait with your car the whole time and, if you don’t feel like planning, they’ll recommend the best tasting rooms in Woodinville to visit.
Disclaimer: Main Street Drivers offered me complimentary services to explore Woodinville. However, they didn’t choose the wineries I visit. That’s all me. 🙂 All opinions are my own and only brands I think are worth the investment end up here. Thanks for supporting the brands that make The Emerald Palate possible!
Option 3: Stay overnight and ride share
If you want to make a mini staycation and maximize your visit to the best wineries in Woodinville, consider booking a night at one of the area hotels. You can drop your car off at the hotel in the morning, take a Lyft or Uber a shorter distance to the wineries and back, and not have to worry about finding a designated driver.
If you do this, I recommend checking out the Heathman Hotel in Kirkland . It’s a beautiful hotel in downtown Kirkland about a 15-minute drive from the wineries. You can drop your car off at the valet around 10:30 am and then head to Woodinville for when the tasting rooms open at 11 am.
Book The Heathman Hotel
Then you can make your way back and have dinner right in the lobby at their fabulous Hearth restaurant . The restaurant is beautifully designed and has a year-round outdoor patio. They make a lot of their dishes in a hearth, such as their irresistible flatbreads. Definitely get the cheese and garlic flatbread and trout roasted in a corn husk if they’re on the menu when you go!
Disclaimer: The Heathman Hotel provided me a one night stay and dinner at Hearth in hopes I’d include it in this guide. I enjoyed my stay and meal and so decided to add them, however inclusion wasn’t guaranteed. Thanks for supporting the brands that make The Emerald Palate possible!
Option 4: Take a wine tour
If you don’t want to worry about driving, you can book one of these Seattle wine tours to Woodinville.
Saving Money Wine Tasting in Woodinville
Woodinville Wine Country , the area’s tourism board, offers deals and discounts at area wineries. Check their website before your visit to see whether they’re offering discounts to the best Woodinville wineries listed below.
For example, if you’re visiting on a weekday, definitely get their Woodinville wine passes . It includes wine tastings and discounts at four wineries for $40. This is a steal since a lot of tasting rooms charge $20 per person to taste.
There are different passes to choose from, but I recommend the rosé pass because it gets you each winery’s typical tasting flight plus an extra rosé. 🙂 You also have 30 days to use it, so you can make multiple trips to Woodinville!
Disclaimer: Woodinville Wine Country provided me with a free rosé wine pass. I thought it was a good value and it included a few of wineries that I consider the best in Woodinville, so I’m including it in this guide. Thanks for supporting the brands that make The Emerald Palate possible!
My Woodinville Winery Map
Alright, onto the good stuff: WINE. I constantly update my Woodinville winery map. It includes both what I consider the best Woodinville wineries and restaurants plus places I read about and want to try. Use it to explore more of the tasting rooms in Woodinville.
The Best Woodinville Wineries
Out of all the tastings rooms on my Woodinville winery map, these are what I consider the best Woodinville wineries. Make sure you don’t miss these ones!
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $15, waived with $45 purchase | Go for: a beautiful forest oasis
Family-owned JM Cellars is one of my favorite wineries in Woodinville. They’re perfectly located right next to one of the best fine dining restaurants tucked a bit up the street from wine behemoths, Chateau Ste. Michelle and Novelty Hill Januik. It requires scaling a relatively steep driveway that has valets to help you park, but the drive is worth it because it makes for a secluded forest vibe.
You’ll find some of the best Washington state wine here. The main wine tasting building is like a posh log cabin. You walk through wall-to-wall windowed doors to get to the bar where they line up around 5 wines to taste. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
One of my “snob” tests is whether or not they get pissy when my boyfriend and I split tastings. This place didn’t bat an eye when we asked, and actually commended us for safe tasting practices. Talk about grace!
Next door is a barn-like hall for weddings, and the grounds boast a fire pit, stringed lights over a patio, a bocce ball court, and an easy trail down to a small pond and abandoned, shed-like building that’s nestled in a sea of ferns. We always say, “This would be great for our wedding,” when we come here because it has so much ambiance. Spending a sunny day here would be a dream.
What to taste: If it’s available, try the Cinsault Red wine. The 2015 smells smoky, but actually has a nice raspberry jam after taste. It’s like a pinot, but heavier. Cinsault is a grape varietal that’s difficult to find in Washington, so give this one a try!
Adam’s Bench
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $20, waived with purchase | Go for: no frills, serious red wine cred
Adam’s Bench is a husband-and-wife owned, small batch winery that literally sits on the couple’s property. They focus on reds only, which means they do them well. And doing reds well means bottles are pricier than some of the other wineries on this list at about $40 – $70. But oh are they worth it.
When you enter there’s a small, modest tasting room that includes some seating and one vintage bench. The owner came over and told us that the bench was from an elementary school in Indiana, where students who were waiting in line to go to the principal’s office had to sit and wait their fate.
It’s quaint stories like this, the fact that the owner is telling his own tales, and the off-the-beaten-path nature of this place that makes it so special. They’re only open Saturdays for tasting, so plan accordingly.
What to taste: If it’s available, try the Stillwater Creek Cabernet Sauvignon. The owner explained how he loves this varietal of cab grapes for their piney flavor. But because their yield isn’t large, many wineries don’t want to grow them.
aMaurice Cellars
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $12, waived with purchase | Go for: beautiful, estate-grown wines
Okay, aMaurice is essentially in a strip mall. But it’s a strip mall full of other wineries, so you can go boom, boom, boom through a few all at once.
It has a beautiful and bright white interior with a garage door that lets in a lot of light. And the walls are lined with pictures of their wine labels, which are drawn by the owner or local artists. Basically if aMaurice wanted to decorate my house, I’d let them.
But we’re here to talk about the wine. And the wine is heavenly. All the ones I’ve tasted are really balanced and smooth. There was one, a viognier blend, that smelled like cheese but tasted acidic and bright. Another had that jammy, but not too sweet finish I always love. All in all, aMaurice is the best winery in Woodinville, in my opinion.
aMaurice is also in Walla Walla, so if you head to eastern Washington make sure to check them out where they grow their grapes!
What to taste: Get the estate-grown “Fred” if it’s available. The 2013 vintage I tasted recently had a really awesome jammy finish. It’s also one of their artist labels, so you’ll likely want to save and frame it when the bottle is finished!
Kerloo Cellars
Warehouse District | website | tasting fee: ~$15 | Go for: bold reds
Kerloo used to be located in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood, but moved to Woodinville in February 2022. I’m happy you can still visit their tasting room, as they make some seriously good wines. They describe them as “palate-challenging” because they aspire to bottle wines most people aren’t accustomed to drinking.
What to taste: If available, try the Majestic GSM (~$26). It’s young, light, and bright with a jammy blueberry after taste.
Market Vineyards
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $15, waived with purchase | Go for: nice structured reds
Boutique winery Market Vineyards is in a strip mall behind Hollywood Schoolhouse Winery. It’s unassuming, but it’s making beautiful, big red wines in small batches. It was founded by ex-finance professionals, hence their winery and bottles being named after financial terms (Benchmark, Liquidity, etc.).
I asked the tasting room attendant what they’re known for and she said single-variety Bordeauxs, which isn’t common since most other wineries blend. She also gave this wonderful tip for remembering how their wines taste: most of their grapes comes from Red Mountain, which is the smallest AVA in Washington producing the biggest grapes…meaning they have wines with a lot of tannins and structure.
What to taste: If available, their 2015 Liquidity white, a viognier-roussanne blend that has deep, complex flavors, or their 2015 Benchmark red, which starts big but mellows out with currant and caramel notes.
Long Shadows
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $20, waived with purchase | Go for: wines made by famous winemakers around the world
Long Shadows is one of the best wineries in Woodinville, hands down. It was created by the CEO of juggernaut Chateau Ste. Michelle who had a dream of creating a winery that showcases the best winemakers in the world. You’ll find wines made by master winemakers out of Chile, Italy, Australia and more who come to the production facility to create limited-production wines. Winemaker Gilles Nicault overseas all production and will work with the other winemakers while they’re overseas throughout the winemaking process to tell them the flavors and chemical makeup of their wines.
You’re definitely getting premium wines at Long Shadows, which shows in the price tags of the bottles. However this Woodinville tasting room is anything but snooty. My favorite thing about them is that they will literally ask if you want to split a tasting. My boyfriend and I do this a lot so we can taste more wines, but most wineries turn their nose up at this. To have a fancy winery offer it blows my mind.
I also love this place because they cater to my geeky side.
The tasting room attendant literally spent about 5 minutes as she poured each wine gushing about the wines and how they were made. I loved the passion and willingness to tell you everything about what you were drinking, so if you’re also nerdy and want to know everything , you’ll love Long Shadows.
What to taste: If it’s available, the 2016 saggi. It’s a sangiovese-dominant blend made by an Italian winemaker from a prestigious wine family out of Tuscany. And it’s heavier than most sangioveses, with a long finish and complex flavors. It’s $55 a bottle. We rarely buy wines this expensive, but we did on our last visit (if that tells you anything about how good it is).
Pondera Winery
Warehouse District | website | tasting fee: $10, waived with purchase | Go for: dry reds enjoyed among art curated by the winemakers mom
Pondera is a small, family-owned boutique winery with serious accolades. It was recommended to me by a waiter at The Herb Farm who used to work in the wine industry. To show what I mean, winemaker Shane Howard once submitted 7 wines to a competition and all 7 got gold.
But you would never know this from walking in, especially if Shane happens to be pouring your wines. He’s a humble, shy guy who will describe what you’re drinking concisely before moving onto the next table. It took one of his regular wine club members coming up to us to explain that Shane isn’t letting on just how good of a winemaker he is.
What to taste: If available, the 2015 cabernet franc. It’s a heavy red with flavors of berries and black pepper that linger long after sipping.
DeLille Cellars
Hollywood District | website | tasting fee: $25, waived with 2 bottle purchase | Go for: Bordeaux-style blends
DeLille Cellars is incredibly popular for their deep red wines. They produce about 30,000 cases a year of wines featuring Washington grapes sourced from the Red Mountain AVA, which they blend using European techniques. I was given a barrel tasting tour here once and honestly, even when the wines “aren’t ready” they are friggin’ phenomenal.
The winery used to be located in a quaint house-turned-tasting room near Novelty Hill Januik and JM Cellars, with another outpost closer to the heart of the Hollywood District called the Carriage House. The Carriage House is still there, but they’ve since moved their operation into a big, beautiful, and modern building on the old Red Hook Brewery lot.
What to taste: If available, try the Métier. It’s bright and fruity, unlike DeLille’s other big, bold reds. If you prefer heavier reds, try their D2 series, like the D2 Estate Red .
Long Cellars
Warehouse District | website | tasting fee: $10, waived with purchase | Go for: Bordeaux-style varietals
Long Cellars is a small winery tucked in the strip of warehouses across the street from all the other wineries. It’s one of the last wineries in the area offering $10 tasting fees (as of the time of writing this), which is a steal considering winemaker John Long’s ability to develop beautiful Bordeaux-style varietals.
Long got into wine by working for Barrage Cellars. He said they paid him in grapes so that he can learn to make his own wine. Now he makes about 3,000 – 4,000 cases a year of mostly red blends using grapes out of Yakima.
What to taste: If available, the Screaming Baby red blend has nice structure and a fun story. It was made for a friend’s baby shower (hence the name) and was so good, he decided to release it to the world.
Tertulia Vineyards
Warehouse District | website | tasting fee: $15, waived with purchase | Go for: estate grown wines with an emphasis on terroir
Tertulia Vineyards, which means “circle of friends” in Spanish and Latin, is technically in the Warehouse District, but it’s not in the cluster of warehouses you’d expect. Rather, you take about a 15-minute walk from that warehouse block to the Hampton Inn & Suites parking lot where there is a mini strip mall with wine tasting rooms.
Now before you say, “A parking lot? Really?” know that that this strip mall is new and quite fancy-looking. It also includes one of my other favorite wine tasting rooms in Woodinville, Tsillian Cellars . The reason Tertulia is in the Hampton Inn & Suites parking lot is because it’s the passion project of the hotel’s owners.
They have 3 vineyards in Walla Walla situated along a rocky mountain that they use to make beautiful estate-grown wines. During your wine tasting, they’ll actually show you samples of the rocks and soils from their vineyard and talk through how the rocky sediments affect their wines. They’ll also share stories behind some of their most interesting wines, such as how they employ a rare process that uses gravity to remove sediments.
What to taste: If it’s available, their carménere. It’s a structured red with a peppery flavor profile.
Obelisco Estates
Hollywood & Warehouse Districts | website | tasting fee: $15, waived with purchase | Go for: art & solid wines
Obelisco is one of the other best Woodinville wineries. Their Hollywood location is cozy, with local artists’ work lining most of the walls. There’s a wrap around deck with seating and you can enjoy 8 wine tastes, which makes this place one of the best values.
I like most of their wines, which range from a 92-point malbec to a riesling white wine that somehow smells like rubber but tastes reminiscent of white grape juice.
What to taste: If it’s available, get their cabernet sauvignon rosé. The 2015 vintage I tasted has a beautiful color. It smells like cheese, but it tastes caramel-y and jammy. And it’s heavy for a rose, which I always appreciate.
Lauren Ashton Cellars
Hollywood & Warehouse District | website | tasting fee: $15, waived with purchase | Go for: friendly, knowledgeable staff
Lauren Ashton is in a quaint, coulda-been-my-dream-house building. The staff is super friendly and will tell you detailed tasting notes to look out for in their wines. I always find their wines to be super solid, and since it’s just around the corner from Obelisco, it’s a great place to stop on your wine tasting tour.
What to taste: If it’s available, their 2014 cabernet sauvignon. It’s a full-bodied wine that has a great jammy after taste. Or splurge to try their Cabernet Franc Private Barrel Auction for a truly memorable experience.
Tasting rooms from my eastern Washington favorites
In my guide to Walla Walla wineries and Lake Chelan winery guide , I outline my favorite wineries in eastern Washington. Luckily, some of my favorites have tasting rooms in Woodinville.
Don’t miss Trust Cellars , Amavi Cellars , and Tsillian Cellars .

Visit Seattle and Seattle Bank Announce Next Cohort of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ -Owned Small Businesses for Community Partnership Program
Now in its third year, initiative aims to grow tourism activity for small businesses in Pioneer Square n eighborhood
SEATTLE – Visit Seattle, the official destination marketing organization for Seattle and King County , and Seattle Bank, a Seattle-based, digitally-driven financial institution, today announced the newest cohort of businesses selected for the Community Partnership Program . Now in its third year, the Community Partnership Program aims to bolster tourism and economic vitality by extending support to BIPOC and LGBTQIA+-owned restaurants, cafes, and retail establishments in emerging Seattle neighborhoods.
Visit Seattle and Seattle Bank partnered with Alliance for Pioneer Square and Intentionalist, an online guide to intentional spending, to identify the 12 BIPOC and LGBTQIA+-owned businesses selected for this year’s program. The businesses selected for the Community Partnership Program are located in the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood near Lumen Field, where six FIFA World Cup matches will take place in 2026. The program aims to support and prepare businesses owners to host the influx of visitors during the tournament.
“Seattle hosts nearly 38 million visitors a year. One of the best parts of our mission is connecting them to under-explored spaces in neighborhoods that define our community,” said Visit Seattle President and CEO Tammy Canavan. “This year, we’re excited to help Seattle visitors experience some of the creative and mouthwatering things happening at small and minority-owned businesses in Pioneer Square, a historic and culture-packed neighborhood folks can easily access via the ferry, the light rail, or Seattle’s stunning new Waterfront Park. It’s a phenomenal time to visit these businesses.”
Businesses will receive waived membership dues (courtesy of Seattle Bank) to join Visit Seattle’s Membership group through 2026 (with additional discounted membership offered for 2027). As members, each business will receive dedicated promotional backing through Visit Seattle’s marketing platforms and editorial content – gaining access to leads and referrals generated by Visit Seattle to encourage leisure visitors, business travelers, and meeting attendees to patronize their establishments. Businesses will also receive complimentary financial consulting services from Seattle Bank, along with comprehensive marketing collateral and toolkits to leverage for promotional purposes.
“Pioneer Square is an ideal focal point for the third year of Seattle Bank’s collaboration with Visit Seattle to support BIPOC- and LQBTQIA-owned businesses,” said Mary Grace Roske, senior vice president of marketing and community relations at Seattle Bank. “This area is a destination for summer tourists and local sports fans alike, and there’s great opportunity to drive traffic to these businesses and introduce people to new restaurants and retailers in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.”
Originally created to aid in the pandemic recovery of small businesses, the Community Partnership Program has grown into a long-term, signature program . The inaugural program focused on businesses within Seattle’s Chinatown-International District and Central District neighborhoods, while last year’s centered on Capitol Hill and First Hill – supporting businesses in close proximity to Seattle Convention Center’s newly opened Summit building.
“Since becoming a member of Visit Seattle we’ve enjoyed a number of visiting media and journalists interviewing us and getting to share our micro business story, service and products,” said Kenneth Dillon, Owner of Footprint Wine Tap, a 2023 participating business of the Community Partnership Program. “We’ve met some local representatives and those from around the world and it has been a pleasure to meet and learn about their stories as well. We hope to continue to (re-)connect with anyone interested in meeting and wanting to share stories.”
Visit Seattle and Seattle Bank identified the historic Pioneer Square as a hub for this year’s cohort. Known as Seattle’s ‘original neighborhood,’ the Pioneer Square of today is among the city’s most culturally diverse – regarded for seamlessly blending vintage charm with trendsetting creativity. The neighborhood will be a hub for FIFA World Cup activity, as Lumen Field will host six matches, including the U.S. Men’s National Team on Juneteenth, 2026.
“Pioneer Square has so much to offer, including a fantastic mix of both new and legacy BIPOC-owned businesses,” said Lisa Howard, Executive Director of Alliance for Pioneer Square. “The Alliance for Pioneer Square is excited to work with our partners at Visit Seattle, the Intentionalist, and Seattle Bank through the Seattle Bank Community Partnership Program to bring critical visibility and economic activity across Seattle.”
To commemorate another year of this partnership and give people a taste of the neighborhood, Visit Seattle and Seattle Bank are bringing back sponsored tabs via Intentionalist. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a taste of each business by placing orders on a pre-paid tab until a $250 limit is reached. Look out for tab information on social channels for Visit Seattle, Seattle Bank, and Intentionalist, as well as on Intentionalist.com.
“Intentionalist is excited to continue our partnership with Visit Seattle and Seattle Bank to bring the Community Partnership Program focus to small businesses in Seattle’s first neighborhood,” said Intentionalist founder and CEO, Laura Clise. “This year’s cohort includes both neighborhood newcomers as well as local businesses that have shaped Pioneer Square for years. The common denominator? Small business owners’ passion for providing cultural and culinary experiences that keep them on the map for locals and visitors alike.”
The 2024 cohort of businesses includes:
- ʔ ál ʔ al Café – Café by Chief Seattle Club that reintroduces traditional Indigenous foods in a way that connects food to culture.
- Drunken Pizza & Pocha – Restaurant that serves Korean street-inspired dishes alongside artisanal pizzas.
- Foggy Tea – A shop from Japanese and Native American owner Michelle Ishimitsu that offers a delightful variety of teas and tea lattes, along with a seasonal menu of rotating local pastries.
- Golden Roosters – Korean fried chicken restaurant that’s also an ideal spot for local sports fans, from owner Sean Yoon.
