Take a Snowcoach Through Yellowstone in the Winter
One of the two ways to explore yellowstone in the winter is by snowcoach. this is everything you need to know..
When snow blankets Yellowstone National Park, there’s only two ways to get into the heart of the park: by snowmobile or snowcoach.
In early November each year Yellowstone closes all but one road to normal vehicle traffic. As the snow begins to fly and cover our first national park, a different sort of vehicle gets ready to transport visitors through a winter wonderland. A snowcoach is a shuttle van either on extra large (picture a monster truck) tires or tracks like a snowmobile. These specially designed vehicles are perfect for navigating the park’s unplowed roads and, other than snowmobiles, are the only way to access the interior of the park in the winter. With big picture windows, you’ll be able to see all the sights from the park’s abundant winter wildlife to steaming geysers.
Snowcoaches are a great way to see the park since you’ll stay warm and cozy inside the vehicle, unlike a snowmobile tour where you’ll have to bundle up. Your driver will also be able to share fun facts about the park and easily point out wildlife as you drive. Tours range from half-day scenic drives to full-day excursions to packages where you’ll do both a scenic drive and ski or snowshoe in the park.
A snowcoach is also the only transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge , the park’s only hotel other than Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel , open in the winter (note: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will be closed winter 2022/23). A stay in the heart of the park in winter is magical. From spending the day skiing or snowshoeing past geysers to curling up next to the fire with a book to ice skating under the stars, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Yellowstone Snowcoach Options
West entrance tours.
Located in West Yellowstone, Mont. , the park’s West Entrance is closed to normal vehicles in the winter months, but is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World.” You can take a guided snowmobile tour in the park from West Yellowstone, but you can also depart on a day tour from this town to see the park from the comfort of a snowcoach. These tour operators offer day trips into the park, usually to either Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone :
See Yellowstone – seeyellowstone.com
Backcountry Adventures – backcountry-adventures.com
Yellowstone Vacations – www.yellowstonevacations.com
Yellowstone Expeditions (Ski camping tours) – yellowstoneexpeditions.com
South Entrance Tours
Yellowstone’s South Entrance is located closest to Jackson, Wyo. , a famous winter ski destination thanks to Jackson Hole Resort. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is also home to lots of winter fun including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. From Jackson, you can head north with one of these tour operators to spend the day seeing Yellowstone by snowcoach, or be dropped off at Old Faithful Snow Lodge for a stay:
Scenic Safaris – www.scenic-safaris.com
North Entrance Tours and Transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge
The North Entrance, just outside of Gardiner, Mont. , is where you’ll find the only year-round road open to normal vehicles through the park. In winter, you can drive plowed roads to the Mammoth Hot Springs area and through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance where the tiny Montana towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City await. You can also book a snowcoach day tour into the park, or transportation to the only hotel inside the park besides Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel that offers winter lodging: Old Faithful Snow Lodge.
Yellowstone Vacations (day tours from Mammoth) – www.yellowstonevacations.com
Yellowstone National Park Lodges (day tours from Mammoth and Old Faithful, transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge) – www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/adventures/winter-adventures/
How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book a Snowcoach Tour?
If you’re using a snowcoach as transportation to the Snow Lodge, it’s best to book your ride as soon as you book your stay since there is only one company at the North Entrance and one company at the South Entrance that offers transportation.
Day tours are more flexible since there are more operators, but it’s best to book as far in advance as possible in order to ensure you get a seat. Last minute reservations may be available, but don’t count on them.
How Much Are Yellowstone Snowcoach Tours?
Yellowstone snowcoach tours range in price depending on which company and tour you choose. In Winter 2022/23 half-day scenic snowcoach tours could be found for less than $100 for adults and less than $50 for children. Transportation, including two pieces of luggage, between Mammoth and Old Faithful Snow Lodge cost $144 for adults and $72 for children each way for the 2022/23 season. While tipping is not required, it’s expected. Be prepared to tip your driver 15-20% in cash.
Be sure to note whether or not your snowcoach operator includes your park pass in your tour price. If they do not, you’ll need to purchase a pass in advance. On guided tours, a 7-day, annual or lifetime pass is only good for one person, so be sure to have a pass for each individual in your group. These passes cost $20 in 2022/23 for adults 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.
What Do You Wear on a Snowcoach Tour?
While snowcoaches are heated, it’s important to be properly dressed for winter conditions as you’ll be entering and exiting the snowcoach in snowy and cold weather and will likely get out and explore at certain stops along the way.
Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable on the drive but quickly gear up to get out in the cold. A waterproof and insulated jacket, a warm hat, warm gloves and snow boots or other waterproof boots with good tread are recommended. Wool or synthetic fabrics are better than cotton for winter trips as they wick away moisture more quickly.

Jh dining guide 2013, snowcoach tours.
Exploring Yellowstone National Park in the winter is truly an amazing experience. The park is primarily accessible via snowcoach or snowmobile. The majesty of Yellowstone awaits. This is one of the most popular winter activities here in Jackson. With diminished crowds during the winter months, the overall park experience is magnified.
In April 1994, the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee directed that a team from the surrounding forests, parks, and wilderness areas study winter visitor use and associated issues. Through this winter visitor use study agencies gained great insight into visitor and environmental concerns. A high quality visitor experience is maintained within the park. Resources are protected, the necessary infrastructure and staff are in place to support current levels and types of winter use. The park service regulates the number of snowmobiles and snowcoaches allowed through the various park entrances on a daily basis. The park service also requires outfitters that provide tours to use snowmobiles and snowcoaches the operate with lower emissions, and at quieter noise levels.
Snowcoaches only tour into Yellowstone. There are a number of snowmobile tour options available which provide wildlife encounters, swimming in hot springs, and/or plenty of off trail riding.
Old Faithful Snowcoach Tour in Yellowstone National Park
Be prepared for an extended day filled with adventure. These guided tours are a unique way to explore any area on snow. These modified vans or tracked machines will carry you over snow through the park. The tour follows the same route as the snowmobile tours. The tours follow the summer roads through the park. After sufficient snowfall the park service grooms these roads for winter use.
Protected from the elements inside the snowcoach, one is left take in the sites and enjoy the ride.
Scenic Safaris , Togwotee Snowmobile Adventures , Wildlife Expeditions
General Information
Pricing for the various trips range from around $250 a person and up. Private tours can be arranged.
Plan on a long day, starting with 6:30am pickup time and returning roughly 12 hours later. Quite a distance is covered and the experience unsurpassed. Breakfast and lunch will be included in the tour.
Dress in warm layers, don’t forget a camera. I would suggest bringing snacks and extra water.

“From my first phone conversation with Jon I knew we would have a great experience. And WOW what a great time my wife and I had. Jon and Thomas did everything to insure we had a great time. We stopped and took lots of pictures of scenery and wildlife. My wife was a little afraid of getting cold but the clothing they provided kept us warm, never got cold! We would definitely choose Old Faithful again and would recommend them to anyone looking for a wonderful experience in Yellowstone. Steve & Connie Pate”

“Me and my wife were very impressed with our first winter vacation and trip into Yellowstone Park. Jon and Senne did a excellent job in preparing us and providing for us through out the trip. We wasn’t sure what to expect but Jon as our guide couldn’t have done anything different to have made it any better. He is very knowledgeable of the facts of Yellowstone and enjoys his job. It was one of our top vacation experiences. Most amazing views and scenery that we could have asked for. We can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed the hospitality and experience we received from Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours.”
“What a wonderful adventure! Special thanks to Senne for providing us with all the information needed to make this trip one to remember. Our three day all inclusive tour was truly that! We were warm, well fed, and expertly cared for from start to finish. Our guide, Thomas, was extremely knowledgable and focused on ensuring a great experience to our entire group. We are already talking about returning for the Continental Divide tour and would definitely request Thomas to be our guide! Thanks from NJ!!”
“An outstanding experience thanks to the team at Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours for their expert handling of our tour of Yellowstone. Experience makes the difference and this team has it. The beauty of Jackson Hole, Yellowstone and the Tetons is just [majestic], the wildlife… amazing. Most recent trip was for my Mom’s 70th birthday. She’s been six times. It’s her favorite thing, especially because of our guide, owner Jon Toolson. Experience it for yourself. It’s remarkable. Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours handles everything and makes it so great.”

“My husband, two teenage daughters, and I decided to travel to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to take a 3 day snowmobile trip through Yellowstone National Park. We chose Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours. It was the most awesome experience!! We are from the South and aren’t used to such cold temperatures. Old Faithful staff prepared us so well for the trip…Our guide was Tony Mayer and he was awesome. He definitely loves what he does and it shows. He gave us so much information about the park, the wildlife, and the state. We will be talking about this trip for many years to come.”
Melanie, SC, January 2014
“Everything about this trip was exciting and fun, with a great tour guide, sights, and company. The tour guide, Jon, was very [knowledgeable], professional, and personal. He made everyone feel comfortable on the snowmobile and had an answer for all our questions. The company provided plenty of gear to keep us warm, and the pace of the tour was not difficult but kept us all moving. It was the most fun I have had on a winter vacation.”

Rhyolites of white, yellow, brown, purple, and pink line the massive Canyon.
Melting Glaciers from thousands of years ago carved the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

From the road 1 mile away you can see colorful steam rise in the horizon above the Hot Spring.

What Makes Us Special
Local expert guides, handpicked adventures, hidden gem destinations, testimonials.
Mo picked up me and my adult daughters from our hotel at 6:30 am for one of the best wildlife tours I’ve ever done... We told Mo which wildlife we hoped to see that day and we saw everything.
Barbara Dee
The owner picked us up from the agreed upon location promptly at 6am with a warm smile and friendly attitude. We were supplied with top of the line binoculars . .. He took us through a back road where he knew Moose's would be! I really appreciated that. We had a blast! I highly recommend!!
This tour company came to us as a referral. We were not disappointed... He had so much information that made this science teacher’s heart happy. .. He had “animal radar”...he purchased our lunch!! First class all the way and worth every penny!!

This is more than just a job to them and part of the thrill of guiding is sharing the experience with their guests when you see your first wild grizzly, or watch a herd of bison in their ancient natural range. Our expert guides equipped with our high-quality optics for up close viewing is sure to deliver a wildlife safari that you will never forget!
How should I prepare for my first animal safari?
One thing to know about Yellowstone and Grand Teton is that the weather is unpredictable. It’s not impossible to see snow in July! Even on hot summer days the mornings and evenings can be cold, so be sure to pack layers to prepare for varying temperatures. If you are coming from lower elevations, take your time and drink plenty of water. Don’t worry, there will be lots of restroom opportunities! Cell phone cameras have come a long way and will certainly do the job, but if you have a camera with a longer zoom be sure to bring it with you. There are no guarantees with wildlife, so keep an open mind. Wild animals are on their own schedules and there’s always a chance you won’t see the one thing you were hoping for. However, there are so many amazing things to see in these parks that you will not be disappointed!
How to tour from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone?
One of the best things about touring Yellowstone from Jackson Hole is that you get the bonus of traveling through Grand Teton National Park on the way. The roughly 50-mile drive between Jackson and the South Entrance is thoroughly enjoyable as you start with the sunrise hitting the jagged peaks of the Teton mountain range. You will have stunning scenery before you even reach the gate, and you may be surprised how many animals you see on the journey! All of this is possible on a day tour and you’ll be picked up and dropped off at your place of lodging. Seeing the best of Yellowstone has never been easier!
