9 Best Chocolate Factories to Visit in Switzerland

If there’s one thing that Switzerland is famous for , it’s Swiss chocolate. I mean, who doesn’t love the creamy texture and the fragrant mixture of cocoa and fresh alpine milk?

However, instead of just buying chocolate at some of the best chocolate shops in Switzerland, we recommend enhancing your experience by visiting chocolate factories in Switzerland!

Here are nine of the best Swiss chocolate factories to get you started!

Table of Contents

1. Maison Cailler – Broc

Maison Cailler

While Cailler isn’t necessarily the most internationally well-known Swiss chocolate brand , it IS one of the oldest chocolate factories in Switzerland, having been around since 1819.

If you’d like to dive right into the historical past of this storied Swiss chocolate brand, then you’ll definitely want to spare a day to visit its main factory, the Maison Cailler.

Here, not only will you be able to watch the entire chocolate-making process from scratch, but you’ll also be able to join an hour-long interactive tour through the museum and discover the history of Chocolat Cailler.

Of course, at the end of the tour is the one experience every fan of Swiss chocolates looks out for the most: Chocolate tasting! In addition, you could also try making your very own chocolate bar by signing up for one of the workshops in advance!

2. Maestrani Chocolarium – Flawil

Maestrani Chocolarium

Another chocolate factory in Switzerland that comes with a long history of excellence is Maestrani. It was founded way back in 1852 in Lucerne before moving to Flawil just seven years later, where they continue to produce their signature Munz, Minor, and Maestrani chocolates.

In 2017, the company officially opened Maestrani Chocolarium, a museum and Swiss chocolate factory that is known for offering one of the most unique chocolate factory tours in Switzerland. It starts with an immersive audiovisual introduction of the brand’s history before ushering visitors down into the very heart of Maestrani’s chocolate factory.

There, you can watch as expert chocolatiers create delightful sweet treats from scratch. And yes, before you ask, you’ll be able to sample those very creations later on in the tour. Alternatively, you can sign up for your very own chocolate-making class where you can design your very own chocolate bar!

3. House of Läderach – Bilten

House of Läderach

Compared to Cailler and Mastrani, House of Laderach is one of the newest chocolate factories in Switzerland. That said, they’ve actually been around since the early 60s! And while they may not be Swiss chocolate centurions, the quality of their products is clear to see (and taste!).

The most famous product of this family-owned business is their artisanal chocolate which is flavored with different unique ingredients such as candied oranges, roasted hazelnuts, pistachios, and more. You can watch the entire process from bean to bar at House of Läderach, their flagship museum and chocolate factory in Switzerland which opened in late 2020.

In addition, you can also learn about the meteoric rise of the company on a guided tour and create your very own chocolate from scratch. If you love artisan chocolate, then this is one of the best Switzerland chocolate factory tours you’ll ever experience!

Fun fact: in 2018, Elias Läderach, the grandson of the original founder of the company, was awarded the lofty title of World Chocolate Master!

4. Chocolat Frey Visitor Center – Buchs

Chocolat Frey Visitor Center

Frey might not be the first Swiss chocolate brand you think of. However, in Switzerland, it’s one of the most beloved household names, with its products available in most supermarkets and stores.

The appeal of this family-owned business comes from its long, colorful history dating back to 1887 when it opened its first factory.

In 2014, it opened its very first visitors’ center which gave chocolate lovers a glimpse into the process of making their favorite chocolates. While it isn’t the biggest chocolate factory in Switzerland, the interactive tour has all the ingredients (pun not intended) you need for a memorable experience.

One unique aspect of the tour is the rare opportunity to taste roasted cocoa beans before they’re turned into chocolate. If that’s not to your fancy, don’t worry because there’s plenty of chocolate to taste at the end of the tour too!

5. Camille Bloch – Courtelary

Camille Bloch

The Camille Bloch chocolate factory is one of the closest chocolate factories to Zurich, lying only about an hour away from the Swiss capital in the Canton of Bern.

As another chocolate factory in Switzerland fast approaching its 100-year anniversary, the Camille Bloch Chocolate Factory is another must-visit for chocolate lovers. Like the other factories on this list, a visit entails a factory tour and a tasting session.

However, the most memorable experience of a chocolate factory tour here is watching as talented chocolatiers make the company’s famous Ragusa and Torino chocolates right in front of your eyes!

And yes, you’ll get to taste this fresh chocolate immediately afterward! If you get hooked on the taste, don’t fret because you can sign up for a class to learn the very secrets to making your own custom chocolate bars!

6. Aeschbach’s ChocoWelt – Root

Another family-owned Swiss chocolate factory is Aeschbach Chocolatier, founded in 1972. This particular brand prides itself on its incredible handmade chocolates, including its famous Bsetzistei (cobblestone-shaped pralines).

Their factory and museum are housed in a building that’s aptly named ChocoWelt, or ChocoWorld in English. As you might expect, you can observe as their famous chocolates are made from scratch, learn fun facts about the chocolate-making process, and make your own Aeschbach chocolate bar right at the end.

If you crave even more chocolate, there’s also a shop and on-site cafe where you can fuel up on even more chocolaty goodness!

7. Lindt Home of Chocolate – Zurich

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Of all the Swiss chocolate brands, Lindt is easily one of the most recognizable names. You’re probably wondering why I left it so late on this list then. To answer that question, it’s because Lindt’s main visitors’ center isn’t technically a factory. Instead, it’s an interactive museum and experience zone poetically called Lindt Home of Chocolate.

Located in Kilchberg, Lindt Home of Chocolate is one of the only places where you can join a chocolate factory tour in Zurich. And what a tour it is!  From the very moment you enter, you’ll see a magnificent chocolate fountain measuring over 30 feet tall, with over 1.4 tonnes of chocolate being pumped out throughout the day!

Once you’re done staring in awe, you can sign up for a museum tour where you can learn all there is to know about Lindt, its history, and how its chocolates are produced. Children will love the end of the tour, where you can eat as much chocolate as you can!

8. Alprose Chocolate Experience – Lugano

 Alprose

With Swiss chocolate being such a famous treat around the world, it comes as no surprise that there are plenty of artisan chocolate brands in the country most of us have never heard of. Alprose is one such underrated gem that’s known for its sustainable chocolates (carbon-free production) and unique packaging.

You can visit the headquarters of Alprose in Lugano but like Lindt Home of Chocolate, the Alprose Chocolate Experience isn’t a conventional factory. It is more like a museum that celebrates the Alprose brand and general chocolate history. That said, they are known for offering one of the best chocolate factory experiences in Switzerland.

You’ll be able to get up close to the chocolate machines running in full view on the production floor. As expected, at the end of the tour, you get to shop and eat as much chocolate as you want too!

9. Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate Adventure – Lucerne

Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate

Unlike most of the other factories on this list, the Verkehrshau Swiss Chocolate Adventure is not attached to any chocolate brand. In fact, it’s not even a chocolate factory. However, I had to include it on this list simply because it’s one of the most popular locations to visit for a chocolate-centric tour.

Also known as the Swiss Museum of Transport, Verkehrshaus opened its doors in 1959 and uses interactive multimedia presentations to guide visitors through the mesmerizing process of turning cocoa beans into delicious Swiss chocolate.

Of course, at the end of the tour, you get to taste and buy some chocolate as well. While the selection may not be as diverse as the other factories, it is still a bucket list destination chocolate lovers can’t miss in Switzerland.

Bonus: Funky Chocolate Club – Interlaken

Funky Chocolate Club

I’ll be honest: This isn’t a chocolate factory in Switzerland. Instead, it’s a humble artisan shop in Interlaken that offers, in my personal opinion, the best chocolate-making workshop in Switzerland.

As you start your hour-long workshop, you’ll be introduced to the different kinds of cocoa beans and chocolates you’ll be working with. By that, I mean tasting everything on the table. Soon, it’s time to make your own custom chocolate bar!

Under the watchful eye of your master chocolatier, you’ll melt, blend, and tamper your chocolate until you produce a bar that’s just as good as any branded chocolate in Switzerland! Once you’re done and happy with your creation, feel free to take a selfie to commemorate the experience and shop for more chocolates to bring home for your loved ones!

Can’t get enough of Swiss chocolate? Then check out this list of the top Swiss chocolate brands and make a list of the best Swiss souvenirs to bring home on your next trip to Switzerland!

Chocolate Factories in Switzerland that Offer Tours (2024)

' src=

Switzerland and chocolate are a match made in heaven. Everyone knows it, but few know how to experience the magic of chocolate firsthand in Switzerland. One of the top questions we get is about chocolate factory tours in Switzerland.

A common request goes like this: “My in-laws from abroad are coming to town, and I would like to take them to a typical Swiss chocolate factory. Any recommendations?”

Recommendations we have. From the behind-the-scenes look at chocolate production to a fantasy world that reminds of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory , there are several fun chocolate factories in Switzerland.

Most of them offer a museum with a self-guided tour on the history of chocolate. Some chocolate factories allow for a more in-depth look at chocolate production with knowledgeable staff who will show you the ropes. And most all chocolate factories in Switzerland have a factory store attached where chocolate is sold at a discount.

These are the best chocolate factories in Switzerland with tours for the public:

The läderach chocolate experience in bilten.

Have you ever caught yourself gazing into a Läderach shop? They have this captivating way of breaking and stacking their thin artisanal chocolate… If your answer is yes, the Läderach Chocolate Experience will be perfect for you. The chocolate discovery path leads from the rainforest to a tasting section, educating visitors about the origin of cocoa beans and the production of fine Läderach chocolate along the way.

Läderach Chocolate Experience-01

This is where all the magic is happening, and visitors can peek inside the production facility. From quality control of incoming cocoa beans to the packaging of the final product, many steps along the mysterious process of chocolate making can be witnessed firsthand.

Consult the Läderach website ahead of your visit to schedule a guided tour in English.

The Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory in Broc

Nestled between Fribourg and Montreux is Maison Cailler , a museum-like chocolate factory out of a picture book. At the museum, the tour starts with an interactive multimedia show on the history of Swiss chocolate. The exhibit also discusses the ingredients for chocolate production, such as sugar, cocoa beans, cocoa powder, nuts, coffee, and others.

Maison Cailler

A real-world production line shows the process from molten chocolate to the packaged bars we can buy at supermarkets – or the attached factory shop. But anyone who has visited Maison Cailler will tell you that their favorite part was the section where you can smell and taste as much chocolate as your heart desires…

Maison Cailler is open daily.

Romain Leemann Artisan Chocolatier in Bulle

The only constant about the chocolate creations of Romain Leemann is change. Always looking for new flavors, this artisanal chocolatier makes some exclusive limited-edition chocolates.

This is the chance to learn chocolate making from a true professional. Different activities include a praline workshop or a bachelor event to produce a chocolate gift for the bride-to-be. During a 45-minute children’s workshop, the little ones make their chocolate to take home.

The Camille Bloch Chocolate Factory in Courtelary

Hazelnut lovers are undoubtedly familiar with Ragusa and Torino, two of the flagship chocolate bars produced by Camille Bloch. At the new CHEZ Camille Bloch exhibit, you will learn a little-known fact about these favorites: they result from a cocoa shortage during the Second World War.

CHEZ Camille Bloch Chocolate Workshop

At the site in Courtelary, there is a production facility and a chocolate discovery tour where you can learn about the secrets behind Ragusa and Torino. As a bonus, you may engrave a special message onto a Ragusa bar! And needless to say, there will be plenty of opportunities along the way to tease your taste buds.

Chocolats Camille Bloch is open daily (except Mondays) from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Maestrani’s Chocolarium in Flawil

The Chocolarium near St. Gallen is a showcase for Maestrani, best known for their Minor chocolate sticks. It is no understatement that this chocolate factory comes with all the bells and whistles. For one, there is a chocolate discovery tour through a maze of colorful rooms where visitors chase the answer to the exhibit’s central question: How does luck get into chocolate?

Maestrani Chocolarium in Flawil-01

Towards the end of the self-guided tour, there is a chocolate workshop in a funky factory environment, allowing visitors to decorate and cool their chocolate bar. And those who visit the Chocolarium on a weekday can watch the factory floor from a bird’s-eye view while snacking on delicious little Minor bars. To picture all of this, read about our experience visiting the Chocolarium.

Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken

Have you ever wondered how to tell a chocolate bar’s type, quality, and percentage of cocoa? And have you ever wanted to create your very own Swiss chocolate?

To educate and entertain, the Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken might just be the most hands-on chocolate factory in Switzerland. It is also one of Switzerland’s most unique chocolate boutiques, with shapes such as chocolate watches or cameras.

Since 2014, the Funky Chocolate Club has become a meeting point for chocolate lovers. The new owners continue the legacy of chocolate workshops that cover everything from chocolate tasting to chocolate making and decorating.

If you still have space after attending a workshop with an all-you-can-eat permission, why not stop by the Hüsi brew bar next door? It is run by Brad, one of the current owners.

Lindt Home of Chocolate / Lindt Chocolate Factory in Kilchberg

Have you ever seen those commercials where chocolate makers in white aprons and chef hats pour liquid chocolate into praline molds? The chocolate maker could be you at the Lindt Home of Chocolate by Lindt & Sprüngli near Zürich!

We have previously stepped behind the heavy doors of this real-life chocolate factory. And as part of the chocolate workshop , an instructor taught us how to create our very own pralines to take home. Insider tip: book a chocolate workshop before Easter or Christmas to make your own Lindt chocolate Easter bunny or teddy bear.

The chocolate museum tour at Lindt Home of Chocolate is educational yet not as entertaining as some other museums. The audio guide, including a dedicated audio guide for children, gives fascinating insights into the history of chocolate making. And chocoholics will love the various chocolate-tasting stations along the way, the giant chocolate fountain, and the Lindt factory shop.

Choco emotionS in Neuchâtel

Suchard may not be top of mind regarding Swiss chocolate brands. But for one lifelong resident of Neuchâtel, the sweet childhood memories of the Suchard chocolate factory were reason enough to open a museum and workshop.

While the original chocolate factory in Neuchâtel-Serrières is no longer churning out Suchard products, Mrs. Vallana has found a way to keep the spirit alive.

Located a bit off the beaten track, Jacot Chocolatier is a hidden gem worth seeing. Its history dates back to 1949, and the current generation has just upped the ante: they offer chocolate and wine pairings!

FAQs about chocolate factories in Switzerland

There are 16 chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland, including large ones like Barry Callebaut and Lindt & Sprüngli, and many small and medium-sized chocolate makers.

Yes, many Swiss chocolate factories are family-owned and have been passed down from generation to generation, steeped in family tradition. Some artisanal makers have a history dating back to the 18th century.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is considered the largest, offering a more than nine-meter-high chocolate fountain, a multimedia museum, a café, chocolate courses, and the biggest Lindt chocolate shop in the world.

That’s a tough one; you might get nine million different answers depending on who you ask. I’d say that Toblerone is widely regarded as the best chocolate brand in Switzerland. Established in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland, Toblerone is known for its unique triangular shape inspired by the Matterhorn peak.

Unfortunately, the Toblerone factory is not open for tours or visits from the public. This is due to the confidential nature of the chocolate-making process, which requires strict security measures to protect the recipes and techniques used to create the signature Toblerone chocolate.

Maison Cailler in Broc is considered the oldest chocolate factory and chocolate brand in Switzerland. Their popular exhibit is open daily for chocolate lovers from all over the world.

Most Swiss chocolate factories have a museum with a self-guided tour of the history of chocolate and a factory store where chocolate is sold at a discount. Some chocolate factories offer a more in-depth look at chocolate production with knowledgeable staff who will show you the ropes.

Chez Camille Bloch • Swiss Chocolate Visitor Center

  • Jura & Three Lakes
  • Last Updated: 29 Apr 2021
  • By Tanya, Founder of Swiss Family Fun

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy . Note that p rices and opening times may change without notice.

Camille Bloch is a Swiss chocolate maker, best known for their popular Ragusa and Torino chocolates. They have a nice visitor center in northwestern Switzerland, where you can learn their history, sample their chocolate, and make your own Ragusa bar in a workshop. I thought the visitor center was delightful, lots of bright interesting displays, with fun interactive elements.

Their chocolate tasting was the best of all the Swiss chocolate tours in my opinion. A worker hand makes a Ragusa and Torino bar, telling you all about it while you watch, answering questions. Then you can eat exactly what they made plus other treats. It was just so friendly and personal. I’d definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.

How to get there

Opening times & tickets, chocolate workshops, chocolate tasting, the visitor center.

Chez Camille Bloch is located in northwestern Switzerland near Biel, easily accessed by car or train.

By car: Drive to Grand-Rue 21, 2608 Courtelary . There is a parking lot adjacent to the visitor center.

By public transport: Take a train to Courtelary , then a 400m walk to the visitor center.

The outside of the visitor center looks a little like a factory, but it’s warm and friendly inside.

camille bloch tour

The visitor center is open Tues – Sun 10:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:00). Plan for about 1 – 1.5 hour for your visit.

Entrance to the museum costs CHF 15/adult, CHF 9/child aged 6-16 , under 6 free. Discount for students, disabled, and pensioners. You can purchase tickets online beforehand, selecting a day and time slot.

In 2021, SBB has a 20% discount offer if you travel there by public transportation. Purchase your voucher here .

They offer an Escape Game experience for CHF 99 for 4 people. I didn’t do it, so you’ll have to let me know.

Last time I checked, they were offering a workshop for decorating chocolate shapes (1hr CHF 25) and another for creating your own Ragusa bar (1hr CHF 35). The workshop fee includes entrance to the chocolate visitor center. Workshops are offered in German and French. They also have a “at home” workshop where they send you a box with all the supplies. See all chocolate workshops .

Before we do a tour, I’ll skip to the important part. Inside the visitor center, there is a chocolate fountain where you can dispense chocolate onto a disposable spoon. The other pic shows some faux factory machines on display. You don’t see inside a real factory here (go to Maestrani’s Chocolarium for that).

camille bloch tour

Near the end of the visitor center, there are two chocolate making stations, one for Ragusa, the other for Torino.

camille bloch tour

The workers make the chocolate as you watch and explain the process. Then you get to eat what they produce. I thought this part was particularly nice and different from other chocolate tours.

camille bloch tour

The displays around the visitor center were quite charming.

camille bloch tour

A few interactive educational displays. I liked this case with many different types of cocoa beans. Next station down you guess ingredients by their smell.

A lot of the museum has that 50-60’s look, which goes along with the company’s history. That felt different from other chocolate tours I’ve done.

Loved the old packaging. In the gift shop, you can get a Camille Block version of the Rubik’s cube.

The cafe has snacks and desserts, but also full meals, which is not usually the case at museum cafes.

The desserts were really good. My friend got one of these over the top cakes stuffed full of chocolate bars. Lunch was pretty good too. My veggie lasagna was very tasty and my friend liked her stew with a chocolate-infused gravy.

Behind the visitor center, there is a nice playground for the kids.

We visited Camille Block yesterday as a day trip from Zurich (1 1/2hr drive either way). It was super fun Chocolate experience. I would highly recommend it if you are in the area. We had problems booking online to make anything so we chanced it and arrived in person, sadly the chocolate making sessions had finished before we arrived and we weren’t allowed to do the macaroon making as you needed an adult per child (unless over 14yrs). So we did the escape room experience. This really made our trip, and it included access into the museum area beforehand. Its not actually an escape room but sleuthing with 7 different stations around the museum area that you use a key to open, solve the riddles and write down the word for each station. If you do them all within an hour then you get a prize. It took us 2 hours to crack them all, even using some of the help clues. All in all we probably spent about 5 hours here and could have spent longer if we’d played in the outdoor playground or eaten in the cafe. It was great having free parking.

Thanks for sharing your experience at Camille Bloch, so helpful! Glad you had a nice time even though it was different than you had planned.

Visitors can learn all about chocolate on a multimedia tour, see the world’s highest chocolate fountain (it is 9 metres tall and has 1,500 kilograms of chocolate flowing through it!), take part in a chocolate making workshop with a LINDT Master Chocolatier or spoil themselves with a purchase from the chocolate shop.

There’s also a cafe where you can enjoy meals and snacks, including, of course, some delicious chocolate treats.

For a fun – and tasty – day trip from Zurich, this tour is a winner. Visit the beautiful Appenzell region where you’ll get a Swiss introduction to both chocolate and cheese!

Your first stop on the way will be the famous Lindt chocolate shop at Kilchberg (mentioned above) where you can purchase delicious chocolate treats at a discount.  The brand new facility, which opened in September 2020, is officially known as Lindt Home of Chocolate .

Next you’ll visit a show dairy and learn about the making of famous Appenzeller cheese, and then take the cable car to the top of the Hoher Kasten mountain where you can eat at the revolving restaurant and take in the stunning views of the region.

At last you’ll reach Appenzell and, after a short walking tour where you’ll learn about Swiss gingerbread, you’ll have time to explore this gorgeous town at your leisure.

The 9-hour Mountains, Cheese and Chocolate tour departs Zurich at 10am. It operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from May to October and Monday and Friday in April, November and December.  Click here to check prices and book.

Maestrani Chocolarium at Flawil

Maestrani Chocolarium, Switzerland

If you’re looking for tons of family-friendly fun and a peek into the real-life production of chocolate, this is the place to go.

Besides an interactive museum where kids get to ‘milk’ cows and learn about the chocolate-making process, you also get to walk through a glass corridor in the heart of the factory and see chocolates being made on mass scale (during business hours).

Plus you get to taste plenty of chocolate (and some cocoa beans) on your journey.

Watch the one hundred metre long chocolate machine in action, and then top your trip off by decorating your own chocolate bar (for an additional cost).

The shop is overflowing with 300 different chocolate products, and you can get treats, snacks, sandwiches and hot chocolate at the cafe, and eat them on the terrace in good weather.

Like the other major chocolate excursions on this list, Maestrani Chocolarium offers additional workshops you can take if you want to get your hands messy, but their unique offer is an overnight stay at the new Schoggi (chocolate) room at Hotel Santispark!

You get a Discovery tour of the Chocolarium, overnight accommodation with breakfast at the hotel, a 3-course evening meal and free access to the swimming pool, water slide, and saunas at the hotel.

Location: You’ll find the Maestrani Chocolarium at Toggenburgerstrasse 41, 9230 Flawil in Eastern Switzerland.  It is 20 kilometres from St. Gallen and 72 kilometres from Zurich.

Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken

Funky Chocolate Club, Interlaken, Switzerland

This fun – and tasty – shop has become a must-visit place in Interlaken for chocolate lovers.

In the shop you can taste and purchase products created by local artisans, most of which are Fair Trade and Organic. While most of the experiences on this list focus on decades-old chocolatiers and big brand names, the Funky Chocolate Club lets you support (deserving) small shops.

If you’d like to dive further into the process of chocolate making, you’ll get all the history and tips and tricks of chocolate-making you’d like in their specialty workshops that run at 11am, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm.

The workshops also teach you how to properly taste chocolate  and of course you can eat as much chocolate as you like! You’ll take home your creations, but make sure you book online to reserve your spot.

And if the chocolate wasn’t enough to sell you, you’ll also get to enjoy their signature coffees (or amazingly thick hot chocolate).

Kids 4 and up are welcome!

The Funky Chocolate Club makes a great outing at any time but it’s an especially good activity for a rainy day in Interlaken .

Location: Funky Chocolate Club is located at Postgasse 10, Interlaken. It’s a 20 minute walk from both Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West train stations.

  • Summer season (1 May to mid-October) Daily : 10am to 8pm
  • Winter season (9 November to April 30) Wednesday and Thursday 3pm to 8pm; Friday and Saturday 3pm to 10pm; Sunday 11am to 5pm.

Maison Cailler, Chocolate Factory, Switzerland — in Broc

Maison Cailler chocolate factory, Broc, Switzerland

Visit the vast and gorgeous Maison Cailler factory, home of one of the world’s finest chocolates, created by the oldest chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland still in operation. While most brands use powdered milk to create their chocolates, Callier uses a condensed milk — which sounds better to me!

At the Broc chocolate factory where Frigor and Cailler chocolates are still produced, you’ll enjoy an hour-long exhibit that follows chocolate making from the Aztecs to today.

Children up to 16 are free with their parent’s admission, which makes this a family-friendly excursion. And chocolate tasting is included!

For an extra CHF 12 you can pour and decorate your very own chocolate bar (Saturday and Sunday afternoons only) to eat yourself or give as a gift. But if you’d like to delve deeper into chocolate-making, Cailler offers a variety of workshops for every age. Check them all out here .

When you’re done stop into the gift shop to purchase Callier memorabilia and, of course, chocolate. Take a seat at the cafe and order an exquisite hot chocolate or fancy dessert crafted by Callier’s expert chocolatiers.

Cailler is now owned by the Swiss multi-national company Nestle

Location: Maison Cailler is situated in Broc, five kilometres from Gruyeres and 41 kilometres from Montreux.

  • 10:00am – 5:00pm daily except 1 January and 25 December

Chocolate Train Switzerland from Montreux to Gruyeres

Chocolate train from Montreux to Gruyeres

A fun way to reach Maison Cailler (mentioned above) is on a day-long excursion aboard the Chocolate Train .  This truly Switzerland in a nutshell — and utterly delicious.

First you’ll set off from Montreux via a first-class-only train and arrive in Gruyeres.

There you’ll be introduced to the secrets of creating the world-famous Gruyeres cheese, and then take a coach to the town’s castle for a tour. Afterward you’ll get back on the train and go to Broc to learn about and taste chocolate at the Cailler-Nestlé factory (mentioned above).

Why not buy some chocolate at factory prices to bring home for friends (or  yourself)?

Finally, board the train and head back to Montreux where you can enjoy sightseeing or simply relax in your hotel room and eat chocolate!

If you hold a Swiss Pass ( which you can read more about here ) you get a discount on the whole excursion.

Location: The Chocolate Train is operated by MOB and runs between Montreux and Gruyeres.

Operating times:

1 May to 31 October only

  • May and June – the train operates Monday to Thursday
  • July and August – daily services
  • September and October – the train operates on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday

If the idea of a tour sounds fun but you’d prefer to travel by bus, no problem.  Full day tours from Geneva are available – click here to check prices for a chocolate and cheese tour to Gruyeres by bus .

Frey Chocolate

Chocolates

Way back in 1887 the Frey brothers started their chocolate company, which was bought out by the supermarket chain Migros in 1950. According to Frey, they’re the only major Swiss chocolate brand produced 100% in Switzerland, so it’s worth trying for that alone!

Whilst the Chocolate Frey Visitor Centre in Buchs was forced to close permanently in March 2020 due to Covid-19, there’s no reason to miss trying this delicious Swiss chocolate.

Frey Chocolate is readily available in supermarkets throughout the country and comes in a variety of forms including bars, truffles and pralines.

Toblerone Swiss chocolate

Invented in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann, the classic Toblerone chocolate bar is perhaps the most recognizable Swiss chocolate because of its unique triangle shape which resembles the peak of the Matterhorn.

The blend of milk chocolate, nougat, almonds and honey creates a tasty treat that has stood the test of time.

Look closely and you’ll see the outline of a bear hidden in the mountain logo, signifying the town of Bern where the bars were first created, and are still made today.

Unfortunately there is no Toblerone factory or museum to visit but don’t let that stop you enjoying the sensational taste of a Toblerone when you visit Switzerland!  They are readily available in supermarkets.

Laderach Chocolate Experience in Bilten

Laderach Chocolate Experience, Bilten, Switzerland

While certainly not as old as some of the other chocolates on the list (founded in 1962), Laderach is famous worldwide for their FrischSchoggi (Fresh Chocolate) — slabs of chocolatey goodness filled with all kinds of goodies from nuts to berries.

The full Laderach Chocolate Experience in Bilten is currently getting an upgrade but you can still get a guided tour of part of the exhibit during renovations. Just make sure you book in advance here (they have tours available in both German and English).

In addition to tours, Laderach also offers a wide variety of workshops at their different locations with something for everyone.

At the Laderach Chocolaterie in Vevey (Montreux Riviera), you can learn about proper chocolate tasting, kids can pour chocolate into fun moulds, or you can make seasonal chocolates. Workshops aren’t held daily and require advance booking. They also have a shop on site where you can buy chocolate — of course!

Finally, at the Laderach factory in Ennenda , you can get a guided tour of the factory and watch the chocolatiers make their amazing treats. The chocolate tours are about 2 hours long and there’s no seating available, so make sure you’re up for the challenge.

Location: Bilten, Vevey and Ennenda

Camille Bloch chocolate factory tour, Switzerland

Chocolates

If you’re looking for a full immersion into chocolate, the Camille Bloch factory has it all — from a museum that takes you through the history of the three generations who have kept Bloch chocolate alive since 1929, to a playground for kids, to an expansive shop offering exclusive chocolates you can’t buy anywhere else.

The museum tours include some chocolate tasting (of course!) and plenty of historical information about the Bloch family.

But things get even more exciting when you book time in a workshop. They have multiple different workshop options ranging from one to two hours where you will leave with your own chocolate creation. Reserve your spot here .

At the cafe and terraces you can sit down and enjoy chocolate-inspired drinks and delicacies while sitting outdoors. And if you’re kids need to burn off some of that sugar high, they can run around the adjoining playground.

Finally you can spend your life savings on every kind of Ragusa and Torino chocolate you can imagine, and even pick and mix your own assortment of treats. Want to personalize some chocolates as a gift? You can have a personal message engraved on a bar of Ragusa.

Location: Chez Camille Bloch is located at Courtelary, close to Lake Neuchatel.  It is around one hour by car from Bern and 90 minutes from Lausanne.

  • Tuesday – Sunday:  10am to 6pm (except December 25, 26 and 31 and January 1, 6 to 17.)

ChocoWorld by Aeschbach Chocolatier in Root

Aesbach Chocolatiers, Switzerland

Aeschbach Chocolatiers has been around since 1972 (it’s now third generation family-owned) and the Schoggitaler chocolate coins they are well known for are sold by Swiss school children each year.

At their factory in Root you’ll get another awesome excursion. The ChocoWorld includes everything from ChocoStudio to ChocoWelt to ChocoManufaktur to ChocoWerk! What do all those words mean?

ChocoWorld is the ‘main event’ where you’ll go on an interactive tour of the chocolate-making process from bean to store. You’ll get to watch chocolatiers at work and ask them any questions you like. Plus, Aeschbach Chocolatiers are the only manufacturers in Switzerland to produce chocolate coins, which you can pay to have specially embossed.

ChocoWelt is a bonus add-on of the ChocoWorld experience called ‘ChocoWorld Plus’ — you’ll get to create your own 200g chocolate bar and decorate it as you see fit. And of course, bring it home to snack on.

Fancy taking a mountain excursion whilst you’re in the Lucerne region? This article will help you decide which one is right for you.

But if you’re really interested in seeing the chocolate-making process up-close and personal, you can join a guided tour of the factory (called “ChocoManufaktur”) which includes the ChocoWelt experience.

Like many of the other factories on this list, Aeschbach also offers specialized chocolate-creation workshops in their ChocoStudio and in ChocoWerk you can make a seasonally appropriate chocolate creation.

Round your trip off with a visit to the ChocoStore and ChocoCafe where you can purchase all kinds of melt-in-your-mouth delights.

Entrance tickets, which include admission to the Chocolate World exhibition, making your own chocolate bar and return train tickets from Lucerne, can be purchased > here .

Location: Aeschbach Chocolatier can be found at Root, just outside of Lucerne.

  • Open 10am to 5pm daily (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day)

Teuscher Chocolate Shops in Zurich

Teuscher Chocolates, Zurich

While you won’t find a museum filled with chocolate facts here, the Teuscher store in Zurich is well worth a visit anyway.

With no admission fee to browse the opulent ‘chocolate heaven’, you can save all your francs for purchasing their expensive, very fancy chocolates. Of course Teuscher believes it sells the best Swiss chocolate, but you’ll have to decide.

Dolf Teuscher, the creator of Teuscher Chocolates , got started back in the 1940s and his chocolate shops have gained world-wide fame ever since. Amazingly all the Teuscher Chocolates are made right in this chocolate factory (Zurich) with only the finest ingredients and without chemicals, additives and preservatives.

Definitely worth paying extra for, right? Get details here .

Location: The flagship store can be found at Storchengasse 9, Zurich (opening hours below) but Teuscher Chocolates also have locations at Zurich Main Station and in the Globus department store in Zurich, as well as at Rue de la Corraterie 16, Geneva.

  • 9am to 7pm Monday to Friday
  • 10am to 6pm Saturday
  • 1pm to 6pm Sunday

Villars Maitre Chocolatîer, Fribourg

Chocolate making

Villars chocolate goes all the way back to 1901, when Wilhelm Kaiser founded his company in Fribourg. His factory is still in use today.

The company prides itself on its use of the finest Swiss milk which they get from Fribourg cows — they say the milk used is just as important as the cocoa beans chosen. Plus the liqueurs and sugar come 100% from Switzerland.

Like Teuscher, there’s no museum at the shop in Fribourg, but unlike their competitor, Villars has a ‘discount’ room offering chocolates that are nearing their sell by date for a reduced rate.

You can also sit and enjoy some coffee with your chocolate treats, which I consider a real bonus!

Location: You can find Villars Maître Chocolatier at Rte de la Fonderie 2 in Fribourg.

Opening Hours:

  • Monday – Friday : 8.30am – 5.30pm (5pm closing during July and August)
  • Saturday : 8.30am – 12.30pm

Chocolat Alprose – Caslano-Lugano

Selection of chocolates

If you want to see a chocolate factory at work, visit Chocolat Alprose during business hours (Monday to Friday). You’ll get to look through windows at the chocolate manufacturing process.

Only able to go Saturday or Sunday? You can still buy entrance to their small museum filled with old machinery and collectibles that tell the story of chocolate-making through the ages, but be warned it’s not as interactive or expansive as some of the other museums on the list.

Besides taking a few selfies with the cow statue out front, one of the best things about a visit to Chocolat Alprose is sampling their chocolates for FREE in the shop before purchasing. That’s a nice perk since this might not be a brand you’ve tasted before, and no one wants to buy a chocolate they don’t love!

Location: Chocolat Alprose is located at Via Rompada 36, 6987 Caslano, Switzerland. It takes around 25 minutes to reach Chocolat Alprose by car from Lugano.

  • Monday to Sunday : 9am to 5pm for Museum-Experience Centre
  • Monday to Sunday : 9am to 5.30pm for Shop (except December 24 and 31 when it closes at 1pm.)

The shop is closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 January.

Chocolate Factories In Switzerland (Tours, Tasting & More)

chocolate factories

Switzerland is famous for its chocolate, as I am sure you know, and an awesome thing to do when you visit Switzerland is to visit one of the many great Swiss chocolate factories.

Each chocolate factory in Switzerland has to offer provides a different experience from the next with some commonalities. You will learn about the history of the Swiss chocolate factories, and how to make delicious Swiss chocolate, and there is always some tasting involved too.

Chocolate lovers should not pass up the opportunity to learn about the chocolate-making process and taste the best chocolate in the world either.

There are quite a few different Swiss chocolate factories you can visit in Switzerland, but which one will suit you best? We run through all the greats below so you can decide.

Table of Contents

Funky Chocolate Club – Interlaken

View this post on Instagram A post shared by FunkyChocolateClub Switzerland (@funkychocolateclub)

The Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken isn’t a chocolate factory per se, it is more of an awesome chocolate shop, but it is still worth a visit. Plus, it is the only spot in Interlaken where you can have a Swiss chocolate experience, so to speak.

The Funky Chocolate Club provides several workshops every day that you can join. During the workshop, you will learn how to make chocolate, create your own chocolate, and get taught how to taste chocolate too.

Did I mention that it is an all-you-can-eat experience too? Chocolate lovers beware as walking home after goring yourself on as much delicious Swiss chocolate as you can is not easy.

The workshops last 1 hour and 15 minutes and cost CHF 69. Be sure to book them in advance as they book up pretty quickly.

Lindt Home of Chocolate – Zurich

Lindt Home of Chocolate

If you are in Zurich then a trip to the Lindt Home of Chocolate is a must as it is one of the best chocolate factories in the world, with one of the best tours you can go on. Plus, Lindt might be some of the best Swiss chocolate ever.

Founded by the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation, the Lindt Home of Chocolate is a new visitors center that was just opened in 2020.

Home to one of the biggest chocolate fountains in the world, you will be blown away when you are standing next to it. Rising up 30 feet and streaming over one tonne of Swiss chocolate, it is a chocolate fountain of dreams.

A tour of the chocolate factory includes going around the chocolate museum where you will learn everything about the chocolate-making process from the selection of cocoa beans to how to set a chocolate bar.

Once done in the museum, it is time for some all-you-can-eat chocolate tasting. Imagine drinking fresh chocolate from the chocolate fountain and sampling all the great Swiss chocolate Lindt offers, and you get the idea.

After the historical part, you get eased into the tasting section. If you’ve ever wanted to eat as many Lindor balls as you can or have spoonfuls of chocolate fresh from the fountain, here’s your chance to shine.

Aeschbach Chocowelt – Root

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aeschbach Chocolatier (@aeschbach.chocolatier)

Aeschbach has only been producing Swiss chocolate masterpieces since 1972 and are therefore quite new on the scene. But, their creations are pretty incredible and their Chocoworld experience is worth going to if you are in the Lucerne area.

You have two options when attending Aeschbach Chocoworld, the normal tour for CHF 15 and the “plus” tour where you get to make your own chocolate bar at the end, which is worth it in my eyes.

The normal tour takes you through the history of chocolate production from the growing of cocoa beans to their processing and how Aeschbach turns raw chocolate into their little drops of heaven.

The tour then takes you onto watching Aeschbach’s chocolatiers in action and you can even ask them any questions you have about their skills.

The normal tour ends here but the plus tour continues and you will learn how to make a chocolate bar, and get to take it home with you.

Camille Bloch – Courtelary

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chocolats Camille Bloch (@chocolats_camillebloch)

Located in Courtelary in northwest Switzerland, Camille Bloch is one of the most popular Swiss chocolate brands in Switzerland, which is saying something.

Before going to the Camille Bloch chocolate factory, make sure you try their Torino and Ragusa chocolate bars which are a household name in Switzerland.

The Camille Bloch visitors center takes you through chocolate production and the history of the business since it started making Swiss chocolates in 1926.

You will be able to watch chocolatiers make the famous Torino and Ragusa chocolate bars live and taste them within seconds of them being ready.

Chocolate-making workshops are also available at the center with advance booking. You can also buy a huge range of their delicious chocolate, and even get a special engraving put on a Ragusa bar to take home.

Maison Cailler – Broc

Broc Chocolaterie Maison Cailler

Maison Cailler is the oldest chocolate factory in the Swiss chocolate industry. Founded in 1819, it has been making yummy Swiss chocolate for over 200 years.

Their visitors center in Broc is one of the top Switzerland chocolate factory tours around. You will learn about the rich history of Cailler, watch chocolate being made live, learn a lot about chocolate, and you finish with a tasting room where you can eat as much chocolate as you like.

You can also book a chocolate-making workshop here too where you will learn from the best!

Entry to the visitors center is only CHF 12 and is free with the Swiss Museum Pass or Swiss Travel Pass.

Alprose Chocolate Experience – Caslano

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ALPROSE (@chocolatalprose)

The Alprose Chocolate Experience is based in Caslano, a town in the southern Italian-speaking region of Switzerland Ticino.

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Alprose doesn’t make typical supermarket chocolate, they make delicious carbon-neutral sustainable Swiss chocolate and their factory tour is renowned as one of the best in the country.

The tour tells you all about the brand, and how they make their special sustainable chocolate, and you get to see the factory floor in operation. There are lots of different machines running which isn’t something you see at other chocolate manufacturers’ tours.

Of course, the chocolate factory tour ends with tasting as much chocolate as you like and you buy lots of chocolate in the shop to take home with you too.

Max Chocolatier – Lucerne & Zurich

Max Chocolatier

Max Chocolatier is one of the most talented chocolatiers in Switzerland and specializes in making luxury chocolates and lots more too.

Max Chocolatier only has two small chocolate shops in Switzerland, the original being in Zurich and their new location in beautiful Lucerne.

They are renowned for their unusual flavors and for making chocolate fillings according to seasonal produce available, meaning their chocolate is constantly changing.

At their Zurich and Lucerne shop, you can book a 60-minute chocolate tasting experience for CHF 300 (max 4 people), which is expensive but it is pretty insane.

Their Lucerne location also offers chocolate-making workshops that range between CHF 340 and CHF 600 for 4 people. The price is dependent on the workshop you choose which goes from how to make chocolate through to making your own special chocolate.

Maestrani’s Chocolarium – Flawil

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chocolarium (@chocolarium)

Maestrani has been making Swiss chocolate since 1852 and is another household name in Switzerland thanks to their famous chocolate bars.

Their Chocolarium experience in Flawil is about as fun as a chocolate factory tour can be making it awesome for both kids and adults.

The exhibits are mostly interactive and you can do things like milking an udder, spinning dials to get chocolate, playing with chocolate fountains, and lots more.

At certain times, you can also see the actual factory processes in action which include a lot of different processes.

Along the way, you will have a lot of chances to taste many of the different chocolates they have on offer. You can also book chocolate-making workshops too on their website.

It is just CHF 14 to get into Maestrani’s Chocolarium. But, it is free with a Swiss Museum Pass or Swiss Travel Pass.

Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate Adventure – Lucerne

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (@verkehrshaus)

The Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate Adventure in Lucerne is connected to the Swiss Museum of Transport .

It is not owned by a chocolate brand or even a real chocolate factory but more of a museum that takes you through the entire chocolate-making process from cocoa beans to chocolate bars.

The museum also teaches you a lot about the Swiss chocolate industry and has lots of different interactive exhibits which are quite a bit of fun.

Like most factory tours, it ends with a tasting experience where you can also buy Swiss chocolates to take home with you.

It is quite an expensive experience and not as good as other Swiss chocolate factory tours, plus the tasting experience is not all you can eat, which is not cool if you ask me.

Läderach Chocolate Factory – Bilten

Laderach

Läderach is relatively new on the Swiss chocolate scene, being founded in 1962, but they are about as good at making chocolate as anyone else. In fact, the founder was crowned “world chocolate master” in 2018, so their chocolates are up there with the best!

Läderach chocolate is all about broken chocolate filled with incredible additions but they make a lot more than those.

Their factory tour is excellent and you have to go with a guide. You will learn everything about their history, making chocolate, and get to see the factory in action, live, learning about what each machine does.

It costs CHF 15 to enter which includes your tour, a CHF 5 voucher for the chocolate shop, a ceramic spoon, and lots of tasting samples. You can also decorate a chocolate bar for yourself at the end for an extra price.

Felchlin Factory Shop – Ibach

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Finest Swiss Chocolate Making (@felchlinswitzerland)

Located in Ibach, close to Lake Lucerne is the factory store of Max Felchlin chocolate. It is on the bottom floor of the company’s HQ and is home to an incredible selection of great chocolate.

You will find everything from white chocolate through to 90% dark chocolate as well as specialties, baking mixes, fillings, and even Grand Cru chocolate couverture.

The staff at the shop are super friendly and pretty much chocolate sommeliers that will take you through everything you want to know about chocolate.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
