Essential Travel Gear & Accessories

Personal item bag our top picks of 2024.

Black personal item backpack on a wooden table

Here’s our top essential: A personal item bag that’ll hold and protect the stuff you need close at hand, every day and everywhere.

We’re talking about travel documents, snacks, personal care items, electronics, changes of clothes, and assorted accessories.

Browse through our favorite personal item bags for a wide variety of lightweight, weather-resistant, and feature-rich options.

I often take a duffel bag for longer trips, but backpacks and messenger bags are more convenient for hands-free sprints down the concourse near departure time.

What to Look for in a Personal Item Bag: Search for a comfortable, airline-complaint bag suitable for one-bag travel and will help you avoid extra boarding fees by stashing underneath the seat in front of you.

Travel Organizers Our Top Picks of 2024

TOM BIHN checkered packing cube on a wooden table

I like keeping my belongings nice and tidy inside my bag, so travel organizers are lifesavers.

I rely on them to help me find essential toiletries, packing cubes, ditty bags, cables, adapters, and all the other miscellany of life on the road.

‘Tidy’ is satisfying.

Trust me, travel organizers make packing and unpacking much less of a hassle.

I especially love the transparent and zippered bags that keep everything visible, secure, and easily accessible.

Travel is stressful enough; we don’t need the extra burden of chaotic clutter.

What to Look for in a Travel Organizer: Search for durable, water-resistant packing solutions that fit your belongings comfortably and have the proper dimensions to stash inside your main travel bag without restriction.

Minimalist Wallet Slimfold Soft Shell Wallet

Black wallet on a wooden table

A purse or wallet designed for travel is another sanity saver.

Monitoring your spending is easier with a lightweight, compact, minimalist front-pocket wallet — we highly recommend the Slimfold Soft Shell wallet pictured above.

Women may want a stylish but minimalist purse with organized storage for the basics.

The Travelambo we recommend will efficiently stash your ID, cash, credit cards, and not much else.

Minimalism is a good thing when traveling.

Why We Travel With the Slimfold Soft Shell Wallet: It’s soft and stretchy yet durable and sports RFID protection to thwart hackers and thieves. Its lightweight and minimalist design helps reduce bulk in our pockets.

Bluetooth Headphones Apple AirPods Pro

White bluetooth earbuds on a wooden table

Wireless headphones are a top travel necessity for anyone listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks that muffle their noisy surroundings.

I use my Apple AirPods Pro daily when I travel.

High-quality Bluetooth headphones like these are a no-brainer.

AirPods are my favorites as they have excellent sound and solid battery life.

Plus, you can use their built-in microphone to talk on the phone when a call comes in.

And, of course, they’re cordless, so the aggravation of tangled cords will be a non-issue.

Why We Travel With the Apple AirPods Pro: They pump out quality sound and use active noise cancellation to block out background noise. If you’re an iPhone user, they connect to your phone automatically once you put them in your ears.

Lightweight Titanium Water Bottle Our Top Picks of 2024

Blue titanium water bottle on a wooden table

You need to stay hydrated, whether you’re summiting a mountain or wandering crowded city streets.

I recommend sipping your beverage from a titanium water bottle; they’re rugged, ultra-lightweight, and won’t leach off any flavors to your drink.

Titanium water bottles come in all shapes and sizes and should fit easily and compactly in your bag.

And by saying ‘no’ to single-use plastic containers, you’re doing your part to combat pollution, including microplastics in the water supply.

What to Look for in a Titanium Water Bottle: Opt for a single-wall bottle if your focus is keeping it lightweight. Go for double-wall if you want to keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. We love the Snow Peak Aurora, pictured above, over all others.

Laptop Case/Sleeve tomtoc 360°

Black laptop sleeve/case on a wooden table

Laptops have become essential for traveling, whether watching Netflix, working remotely, or keeping in touch with loved ones.

Packing your laptop without proper protection is a big no-no, so grab a laptop case or sleeve for extra protection.

I like the Tomtoc 360° because its plush padded shell includes corner reinforcement and a decent amount of storage for accessories.

I’ve dinged-up laptops in the past, so I’m a big advocate of protective cases and sleeves.

Why We Travel With the tomtoc 360°: It’s the lightest and most straightforward laptop case/sleeve for our needs. It fits our MacBook Pros like a glove, and its zippers are buttery smooth. There are ten colors to choose from!

Durable Phone Case OtterBox

Blue phone case on a wooden table

Many people choose an OtterBox as their go-to phone case, and so do I.

They’re the market’s most trusted brand, and their cases are definitely ‘engineered to endure.’

There’s a wide variety of stylish designs and colors, so grab one to protect your precious phone.

Imagine trying to travel the globe with a smashed phone.

Not a pleasant picture, is it?

Too many phones are BSB designs — “Beautiful, Slippery, and Brittle” — so protect your phone and your investment with a rugged case from a trusted brand.

Why We Travel With an OtterBox: OtterBox is the OG in smartphone protection and has a reputation for putting out sturdy, reliable, and ergonomic products. They come in various colors and styles and offer MagSafe options for iPhones.

Ultra-Compact & Lightweight Power Bank Nitecore NB10000 Gen II

Black device charging power bank on a wooden table

Letting your gadgets run out of juice in the middle of a busy day is a rookie move.

Use a power bank like the Nitecore to top up your device batteries.

Despite its compact size, this will keep your electronics alive until you can return to your home base to charge up and wind down.

This Nitecore is a medium-duty 10,000mAh power bank sized for phones, tablets, and cameras.

However, if you also need to charge laptops and other power-hungry devices, consider splurging for a bigger, more powerful unit.

Why We Travel With the Nitecore NB Gen II: It’s the lightest and most compact 10,000mAh power bank on the market. Its carbon fiber enclosure is sleek, durable, and IPX5-rated water resistant.

Compact Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker JBL Go 3

Black portable must-have bluetooth speaker on a wooden table

Do you like to listen to music as you get ready in your hotel room or soak in a sunset on the beach?

Then, grab a portable Bluetooth speaker.

This may not seem like ‘essential’ travel gear, but many of us (myself included) consider it a necessary comfort of home when out on the road.

The JBL Go 3’s sound quality makes it an easy recommendation, as does its portability, waterproofing, and value.

I use it to listen to podcasts, create white noise for sleeping in noisy environments, and to motivate myself during bodyweight travel workouts .

Why We Travel With the JBL Go 3: For its size, it cranks out respectable sound and punchy bass. It’s lightweight, portable, waterproof, and dust-proof. At $50, it’s a good value that should last for several years of travel.

Compact International Travel Adapter Anker 735

Black and grey laptop adapter on a wooden table

If you’re a globetrotter like me, you already know that reliable and powerful travel adapters are must-haves.

This is the lightest and most compact charger I’ve used that can charge my MacBook Pro, and it keeps all of my other electronics powered and ready to go.

Ironically, I use it to keep my Nitecore power bank topped up… a charger for a charger.

Frequent travelers stay in touch and find their way using their digital devices, so it’s wise to recharge with a compact and reliable product.

We rely on our adapters, and it’s good to know that Anker has a reputation for reliable and innovative products.

Why We Travel With the Anker 735: It’s about 40% the size of a standard MacBook charger and has two extra USB charging ports; it’s as compact and lightweight as you could ask for. Anker products are as rock-solid as they come.

Compact Phone Kickstand/Tripod The Pocket Tripod

Pocket Tripod brand phone kickstand on a wooden table

Your phone’s camera will take better low-light photos if you stabilize it with a tripod.

And this tripod is the size of a credit card, making it a perfect travel companion.

It’s also a kickstand to hold your phone steady while it plays videos as you nod off during the flight to your next destination.

Versatility is why I chose The Pocket Tripod as a travel essential.

It’s a convenient and innovative piece of gear that I always have on hand, ready for the next great photo opp.

A steady camera means less image blur, better self-portraits, and more hands-free video chats.

Why We Travel With the Pocket Tripod: It reliably props up phones when filming adventures, chatting with loved ones, or watching movies on an airplane. It weighs half an ounce and can be stashed away virtually unnoticed in a wallet or purse.

Ultralight Camera Clip Peak Design Capture

Black aluminum camera clip on a wooden table

When I travel with a camera, I keep it close at hand with the Peak Design Capture clip.

I no longer have an excuse to leave my camera behind because I don’t want to bother with straps or cases.

Always having my camera within reach means no more missed opportunities for the perfect photo.

I prefer the Peak Design Camera Clip to tangle-prone camera straps.

It’s lightweight and easy to attach to a backpack, bag, or belt.

Use it if you travel with an expensive camera to keep it hands-free until the moment you need it.

Why We Travel With the Peak Design Capture: We travel with expensive cameras that must be protected at all costs. Not only does the Capture protect them, but it also allows us to forego annoying and cumbersome camera straps.

High-Quality Travel Journal Moleskine

Black soft cover travel essential journal on a wooden table

Travelers keep journals to document and make sense of their lives.

Paper journals have been around for centuries, and they’re a tradition that’s far more intimate than typing notes into a cell phone.

Moleskine journals are legendary — Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and David Bowie all captured their thoughts on those distinctive creamy ivory pages.

For me, journaling is calming and therapeutic, especially in nature.

My thoughts and memories seem to expand when I write by hand.

It’s a ritual I cherish, and traveling inspires me.

Set your smartphone aside and give it a try; it’s delightful.

Why We Travel With the Moleskine Soft Cover Journal: Information comes at us from a million different directions while traveling, and we need a journal to make sense of it all. The Moleskine is durable and has 240 no-bleed pages.

The Write Everywhere Pen Fisher Space Pen

Fischer Space Pen writing necessity on a wooden table

High-quality journal pages deserve high-quality pens, and that’s where Fisher Space pens come in.

They were designed for astronauts floating in zero-gravity environments!

I’ll bet their journal entries are slightly different from yours and mine.

Fisher Space Pens have a no-nonsense heft, plus a special ink with a velvety glide.

Their compact Bullet Pens slip easily into purses and pockets, and writing with one puts me in the mood to jot down my day’s adventures.

Life’s too short to use Bic pens.

Why We Travel With the Fisher Space Pen: This bad boy will write underwater and in zero gravity, in case your travels take you somewhere out of this world. It’s compact, rugged, streamlined for smooth writing, and will last forever.

Noise-Blocking Earplugs Howard Leight by Honeywell

Yellow and pink earplugs on a wooden table

Moving from Point A to Point B often exposes you to plenty of noise — jet engines, city traffic, crowds, and much more.

Battery-operated noise- canceling headphones have their place, but simpler, old-school noise- blocking methods like earplugs are also worth considering.

Traditional earplugs like these colorful inserts from Honeywell can block many of the noises you’ll encounter when traveling.

I use mine regularly on airplanes when I’m tired of my headphones but still need relief from the cabin soundscape or Jerry from Omaha snoring loudly in the seat next to me.

Why We Travel With the Howard Leight by Honeywell Earplugs:  Whenever you inevitably cross a screaming child in an airplane, you’ll thank us for this recommendation. These are comfy, contoured, and soil-resistant to prevent dirt build-up.

Essential Travel Clothing

Merino wool t-shirt wool&prince (men’s) wool& (women’s).

Man wearing a black t-shirt standing against a white wall

Clothes designed for travel enthusiasts should be lightweight, comfortable, and well-fitting.

That’s why I suggest Merino Wool T-Shirts from Wool&Prince (for men) and Wool& (for women).

W&P is a top supplier of Merino wool clothing and my favorite brand on the market today.

W&P shirts are super soft, anti-microbial, odor-resistant, and perfect for travel.

Banish smelly clothes that cause discomfort over the course of a day.

The best part for travelers is that these shirts can remain odor-free for several days — quite a benefit for those on the go.

Why We Wear Wool&Prince While Traveling:  We can get away with wearing wool clothing for days, if not weeks , at a time between washes while traveling. Seriously. Wool&Prince shirts are true to size, fit incredibly well, and don’t shrink.

Lightweight & Versatile Travel Pants Outlier Slim Dungarees (Men’s) Vuori Ripstop (Women’s)

Man with blue pants standing against a white wall

I’m a travel pants nerd.

When searching for the perfect pair, do your homework and choose one that balances comfort, functionality, and style.

You’ll spend long hours wearing these travel pants, so you’ll want to be comfortable and good-looking.

Slim Dungarees and Ripstop pants are two of our absolute favorites.

I’ve sampled several pairs of pants and travel jeans , and Vuori is one of my favorite brands.

They’re versatile, and I wear them for everything from hiking to bouncing around town.

Why We Wear Ourlier & Vuori While Traveling: Both brands make incredibly stylish, comfortable, and durable pants that fit well. They’re durable enough for year-round use and breathable enough to wear in hot and humid climates.

One Pair Do-It-All Travel Shoes Our Top Picks of 2024

Two black shoes on a wooden table

For the no-checked-luggage traveler, I recommend bringing only ONE pair of do-it-all shoes.

That can be tricky, especially if your trip involves a mix of city streets and hiking trails.

Versatility and comfort should always be your top priorities, but never discount the value of a stylish pair of shoes or boots.

We’ve simplified your choice by listing our favorite footwear for both men and women.

From sneakers to loafers and slip-ons to athletic shoes, you’ll likely find several varieties that might pique your interest for your upcoming trip.

I only travel with one pair of shoes, so they must be versatile and comfortable.

What to Look for in a Pair of Travel Shoes: Search for a comfortable and lightweight pair of shoes that’ll let your feet breathe as you pile up the steps during your adventures. Bonus points for kicks that can be dressed up and dressed down.

Six Tips for a Perfect Packing List

Efficient travel requires a savvy mix of preparation, planning, and organization if you’re going to thrive out there.

No matter the length of your trip, you must learn to prepare and pack wisely.

To help you, here are a few tips for putting together the perfect packing list:

If It Doesn’t Add Value, It’s Not Essential

Avoid packing items that don’t serve a purpose or add value to your travels.

Leave it at home if it doesn’t make the trip more enjoyable, productive, or efficient.

Define your essentials based on your activities — backpacking, camping, hiking, or visiting a new city.

Pack only the essentials: clothing, footwear, technical gear, and personal care essentials that add value to your travel.

Focus on Multi-Purpose Essentials

Have you ever regretted your packing choices while out on the road?

To avoid that feeling, pack items that serve multiple purposes.

This will save time, and you’ll have fewer items to track.

For instance, select shoes or pants ideal for multiple activities, such as hiking and sightseeing.

Another great multi-purpose item is an all-in-one bag like a fanny pack or backpack that can also be worn crossbody.

Aim for Compact and Lightweight Gear

Selecting the right items can be daunting, so if you’re a ‘just-in-case’ packer, you’ll quickly end up with an overstuffed bag.

Stay focused on proven methods — lightweight and compact packing is the way to go.

Look for items that’ll pack up tightly and fit snugly in your bag or suitcase.

Choose clothing and other items that will last the entire trip and can fold up neatly.

Opt for shoes or sandals with lightweight soles that offer grip and traction but won’t overload your bag.

Do Your Homework Before You Buy

Avoid making terrible travel decisions, and always read reviews thoroughly before purchasing.

This is especially true when making a rushed, last-minute purchase.

Learn from customer experiences and insights into the product’s performance in different conditions and climates.

For example, if you’re shopping for technical apparel or a multi-purpose tool, tap into the wealth of knowledge out there.

Solid research could lead you to buy something that performs well and lasts for years.

Embrace Minimalism

If you’re a minimalist traveler, you know the truth of the saying “less is more.”

Minimalism is all about embracing the principle and avoiding the temptation of packing too much stuff.

Clutter will drag you down and hold you back.

Start by looking for versatile items of clothing and footwear that can be used interchangeably in different settings or scenarios.

And when you return home, keep track of the items you used most and decide what can be left behind next time.

Invest in Quality — Buy Once, Cry Once

Last but not least, invest in quality travel gear.

The up-front costs of high-quality items are often offset by their greater utility and longer lifespan.

If you have to replace cheaper items every few trips, are they really saving you money?

Probably not, especially if the higher-quality items have a solid warranty and offer reputable customer service.

Different types of travel gear include luggage and carrying cases, travel clothing, and items to help ensure personal security while away from home. In addition, various types of travel-size electronics and personal care items are often quite useful. Some travelers may also need very specific types of travel or activity gear, such as gear for camping, sports, or hiking. The necessity of specialty travel supplies varies depending on the length of a trip as well as the region visited.

For many travelers, the most important type of travel gear is luggage. For short trips, often a small duffel bag or carrying case works well. Longer trips, however, often require larger suitcases. Individuals who need to wear more formal clothing on their journey, such as suits or dresses, may prefer to carry these items in a special garment bag that can be hung upright while traveling, minimizing wrinkling. Frequent travelers often like to use roller bags that can be rolled on the ground. This minimizes both the need to carry a heavy bag as well as strain on the traveler’s neck, back, and shoulders.

travel gear definition

Many travelers are concerned about being able to enjoy some of the comforts of home while on the road. They may bring a small travel iron so they can care for their clothing. They may also bring a travel-size electric kettle so they can heat water for tea or instant soups. Due to airline restrictions on carrying toiletries in some countries, travelers may purchase personal care products such as deodorant, toothpaste, and shampoo in smaller sizes.

travel gear definition

Some travelers also buy and wear travel clothing, which is made from material that is resistant to wrinkling. The wrinkle resistance means that these garments can be rolled up to maximize luggage space. Travel clothing sometimes also has additional pockets so as to make it easier for tourists to sight see while carrying items such as cameras, maps, or guidebooks.

travel gear definition

Personal safety is often a concern for many travelers, and many travel gear suppliers offer special security items. Some travelers carry with them personal alarm systems that they can activate if accosted on the street. In addition, travelers may also bring room security alarms that can be placed on hotel doors in order to discourage break-ins. Some of the more popular types of security-related travel gear include passport neck pouches and money belts, which allow travelers to carry identification, passports, and cash on their body in a discreet manner.

Travel Glossary – The ULTIMATE List of Travel Terms

Unravel the mysteries of travel terms, acronyms, and all the essential backpacking jargon.

Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time adventurer, The Broke Backpacker travel glossary is your passport to understanding the language of the road.

Will leaning on a colourful rickshaw/ tuk tuk in India with a field of sunflowers behind him and a pile of backpacks on the roof

Travel Glossary

Accommodation: The place where you’ll stay during your trip — your home away from home. This can range from a snazzy hotel suite to a bunk bed in a buzzing hostel.

Adventure Travel: Exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations and experiencing adrenaline-pumping activities. The type of travel for those who prefer hiking boots over flip-flops.

Airline Alliance: A partnership among airlines to provide passengers with extended networks, smoother connections, and often, better perks. Like a friendship bracelet, but for airlines.

Airport Code: The three-letter identity tag for airports around the globe, making booking flights and navigating airports simpler. Think of it as the airport’s nickname.

Airport Terminal: The specific area in an airport where you check-in, pass security, and board or disembark your flight. It’s the traveller’s hub within the travel hub.

Backpacker: A traveller known for carrying their life in a backpack, seeking immersive experiences, and often on a budget. Backpackers are known to be part wizard, part ninja, with their ability to pack light yet still have everything they need.

Broke Backpacker: A backpacker traveling the world on a tight budget, often hitchhiking, Couchsurfing and cooking their own food whilst camping out under starry nights. Broke Backpackers are resilient, kind-hearted and always find a way to hustle and make ends meet.

Begpacker: Someone who funds their journey by begging for money in the countries they visit. Not exactly the hero of our travel tales.

Bikepacking : Backpacking by way of bicycle. Travellers pack their things onto a luggage rack and cycle around — sometimes for weeks, and sometimes indefinitely.

Boarding Pass: Your golden ticket to board a plane. For some, a travel collectible of sorts; for others, a paper quickly forgotten in the seat pocket.

Budget Travel: Stretching every little bit of your hard-earned cash as far as it can take you — and seeing the world without breaking the bank. That is what a Broke Backpacker does, baby!

Business Class: A step up from Economy Class, usually with wider seats and better meals. A taste of the high life, often experienced courtesy of points or special offers.

Busking : The art of funding one’s travels (or saving for them) by performing in a public place in exchange for tips. Usually connected to street musicians.

Carry-On Baggage: The essentials you can take with you on the plane. Packing it is something many consider an art, fitting everything a close second to magic.

Checked Baggage: The luggage you trust the airline to transport in the belly of the plane. Also commonly referred to as a “test of faith” amongst the community.

Codeshare: An agreement between airlines where a flight is operated by one but marketed by another. Say you call your mate to take you on a ride, but he shows up in his neighbour’s car… sort of like that.

Couchsurfing: Staying with a host for free, usually sleeping on their couch or spare bed. A powerful tool in a Broke Backpacker’s arsenal, and a term made popular by the Couchsurfing travel app .

Customs and Immigration : The checkpoint at international borders where officials check your documents and luggage. It’s the final boss battle before entering a new country.

Digital Nomad: An individual who works remotely from different parts of the world, often in cafes, co-working spaces, or beach bars. They’ve mastered the art of making anywhere an office.

Domestic Travel: Travelling within your own country, aka something we should all do more often. Our backyard is right there, and it is probably hiding a shit ton of gold.

Eco Tourism: A type of travel focused on conservation, supporting local communities, and minimizing impact on the environment. Often associated with volunteering projects , but not exclusively.

Economy Class: The most common and budget-friendly travel class. Broke Backpackers rarely know any other, really.

Fare Alert: A notification service that alerts you to the best flight deals. Like having a personal scout for travel bargains.

First Class: The epitome of luxury in the sky, with gourmet meals and lie-flat seats. A rare gem for budget travellers, usually only spotted in daydreams.

man on empty plane flight

Gap Year: A year of travel, often taken by students as a break between high school and college, but increasingly popular with adults seeking a career break or life reset.

Ghost Fares: Listed flight deals that vanish when you try to book them. Like chasing a mirage in the desert of internet deals.

Glitch Fare: An error in listing the price of a flight, often ridiculously low. This is what we live for, amigos!

Guest House: A cozy, home-like accommodation option, often run by locals. It’s where you get the warmth of home, without all the boring chores.

Haggling : A type of bargaining for the lowest possible price that tends to be the default way of shopping in many parts of the world, particularly when goods are not sold for fixed amounts.

High Season: The peak travel period with the highest demand and prices. It’s when everyone else has the same travel idea as you.

Hitchhiking: The art of catching free rides with passing vehicles, usually by sticking your thumb out on the side of the road. It’s a gamble of patience and luck, with stories for a lifetime.

Homestay: Staying with a local family, experiencing their way of life. Be a guest, not a tourist.

Hostel: Budget-friendly accommodations, often with shared rooms and communal spaces. A good hostel is a home, and one where stories and friendships are as plentiful as bunk beds.

Hub Airport : A major airport that serves as a central point for connecting flights. Think London, Dubai, Singapore… the grand central stations of the skies.

Layover: The waiting period between connecting flights. An unscheduled mini-adventure, some would say.

Legroom: The space available for your legs on a flight. Often feels like a luxury in economy class.

Long-Haul Flight: A flight covering a long distance, usually over six hours. On long-haul flights, time truly becomes an illusion, and time zones mere suggestions. Reality is not the same anymore.

Low Season: The travel period outside of peak times, offering fewer crowds and often better deals. It’s the introvert’s prime time to travel.

Low-Cost Carrier: Airlines that offer no-frills flights at lower prices. They’re the unsung heroes for budget travellers. If you’re based in Europe, I’m sure you’re familiar with Ryanair and their crazy deals .

Money Belt : A sleek, secret weapon that expertly hides your cash inside of an inconspicuous-looking belt. Money belts are top-tier backpacker safety tools.

Off Season: Similar to Low Season, a time when travel is less in demand. It’s when destinations breathe a sigh of relief and welcome you with open arms and cheaper prices.

Off-The-Beaten-Path Travel: Exploring places that are not on the typical tourist radar. It’s for those who view the road less travelled as a personal invitation or a challenge.

One-Way Flight: A flight not returning to the origin point. One could say that’s exactly the kind of ticket you should be booking… but that’s just me. 😉

Overbooking: When airlines sell more tickets than there are seats. The airline industry’s version of musical chairs.

Overland Travel: Travelling across land, often through multiple countries, by bus, train, or car. Overland travel is the scenic route to adventure and there’s little that can beat it.

man riding a motorcycle in the karakoram mountains

Package Tour: A pre-arranged travel package including flights, accommodation, and sometimes meals and tours. Travel on easy mode!

Packing List: The checklist of essentials for your trip. You can look at it as the line between “I have everything” and “I forgot my toothbrush.”

Peak Season: The busiest travel season, with the highest demand. When your favourite spots become everyone’s favourite spots.

Responsible Tourism: Travel that minimizes negative impacts on the environment and local communities. The idea is that you ALWAYS leave places better than you found them.

Revenge Travel: The surge in travel after periods of restrictions or lockdowns, like what we experienced after the decade-year of 2020. The world’s comeback tour is on!

Rural Tourism: Exploring the countryside, away from the city hustle, and finding beauty in the serene and the simplest of things.

Shoulder Season: The sweet spot between peak and off-peak seasons, offering a balance of good weather and lower prices. It’s the savvy traveller’s dream season.

Sleep System : Core essentials of any broke backpacker’s tool kit that allow one to sleep anywhere . We’re talking sleeping mat, sleeping bag, and pillow type of setup, but not all systems are built equal!

Solo Travel: The art of travelling alone, discovering the world, and perhaps a bit of yourself along the way. It’s where independence meets adventure.

Souvenir: A memento from your travels, ranging from the classic fridge magnet to the more eclectic and exotic goods. Some more entrepreneurial travellers even manage to turn it into a business .

Sticky Place: A destination that feels so right you have no choice but to stay. You’ve booked a couple of nights, but you’ve been there for at least a couple of weeks.

Stopover: A break in your journey, allowing you to explore a city before continuing on. It’s like a travel bonus level.

Sustainable Travel: Travelling in a way that ensures destinations are preserved for future generations. It’s about treading lightly and caring deeply.

danielle and harvey extending visa in krabi, Thailand

Transit Visa: A visa required for passing through a country to a final destination. It’s the paperwork pit stop of your journey.

Travel Hacks: Tips and tricks to make travel easier, cheaper, or more enjoyable. A cheat code for the travel game.

Urban Exploration: Discovering the hidden gems and secrets of urban environments, often accompanied by some form of outlaw defunct urban space invasion. Epic.

Visa : A travel document that is required to enter certain countries. Visa policies will differ wildly depending on the destination and your nationality.

Visa Waiver: An agreement allowing travellers to visit a country without a visa for a short period. It’s the travel equivalent of a hall pass.

Wild Camping: Setting up camp in unmarked spots in the wilderness. It’s about as close to nature as you can get without becoming a bear.

Work Exchange: Volunteering your time in exchange for food, accommodation, or experience. The barter system meets backpacking.

World Heritage Area/Site: Locations recognized for their cultural, historical, or scientific significance. It’s the world’s way of saying, “This place is awesome.”

Xenophilia: A love for foreign cultures. The heart of every true traveller.

Travel Gear

Updated On: January 23, 2024

Our travel gear has evolved over the years, and while there are still a few old standby items that we recommend, there are a lot of new ideas for you to add to your travel list too. Things have changed a lot in travel. We have to think about a few more things when stepping on a plane, eating out, and staying in hotels. We’ve updated our travel packing list to include the best travel gear for 2023 and beyond!

Table of Contents

Best Travel Gear and Travel Accessories

Enjoy our suggestions of items to add to your travel gear list.

When we travel, we carry a lot of electronics including cameras, computers, iPhones even a drone. It’s our job, so we go overboard with gear, you don’t have to carry so much, but the travel gear listed below are great options to support the electronics you bring with you. For charging, storing, and keeping everything safe we’ve got you covered.

Cool Travel Tech Gear

Travel and Tech Gear

1. Belkin Mini Surge Protector

The Belkin Surge Protector has three plugs to charge multiple items as well as two USB ports to charge things like your iPhone or camera. We can charge five items at once and only have to carry one adapter with us. The surge protector also ensures that our electronics never get fried in unstable environments. We travel to some sketchy destinations and it’s not uncommon for power surges that could easily ruin your computer.

2. Portable USB Charger

Have you ever made a point of going into a coffee shop or restaurant just to use a plug to charge your phone? Well, if you get yourself a portable USB external battery charger you won’t have to worry about missing calls or updating facebook during your travels ever again.

Make sure to get one with two outlets and 20000 mAh so you have lots of charges. We’ve charged GoPros and cameras with our portable chargers and never miss a shot! This has been a lifesaver on safaris when we’re out all day and the batteries go dead on our cameras. We never miss a shot!

3. World Travel Adapter

Forget all the different adapters you used to have to dig out of a drawer before traveling, now you can get all the world’s power outlets in one cube. The World Travel Adapters have come a long way. Wherever you land, you’ll have the right plug at your fingertips in one compact place. All you have to do is fold or pull out the right plug for the right country and you are good to go. We will never go back to the old individual adapters. Check it out.

4. Gear Ties

Have you noticed that with all the electronics that we’re all carrying, our charging cables are getting all mixed up and tangled? When we pack our iPhone cables, computer chords, and camera chargers, we wrap up all the loose ends with Gear Ties They’re way better than tape or zip ties because they coil and uncoil with ease.

5. Packing Cubes

These nylon sacks help to organize our gear and clothing and free up a lot of space. I put my clothes in color-coded cubes. Underwear in white, shirts in red, shorts and skirts in blue. They are lightweight and durable and we have had some of our packing cubes for nearly a decade. We can stuff our clothing into them and have a completely neat trip back. We recently read that Eagle Creek has gone out of business, but they are still on Amazon for now here at Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Cubes . That is what we use, but you can also look at Osprey Ultralight Packing Cube Set

6. Compression Cubes

If you want to save space in your travel bags, Compression Cubes are an amazing addition. The   Eagle Creek Compression Cube Set is an excellent choice. They act as stuff sacks where we can cram our clothes into a bag and then zip it closed to free up even more space in our backpacks. We cram odds and ends in, pack it to the max and then use the second zipper to compress it down to a small and neat little bag holding everything.

7. Toiletry Bag

A good toiletry bag has really kept us organized, neat, and clean. The Packit Wallaby is a great organizer that we can hang on the back of doors. Its zipper pockets keep things from falling out and it is compact enough that it doesn’t take up the space of bulky leather toiletry bags. Read more: Best Travel Organizers for Smarter Packing

8. Foldable Hiking Bag

Even if we are staying at a five-star resort and using our travel pro suitcase instead of a backpack, we like to keep a small foldable hiking bag on hand. This bag is a great lightweight option to add to your packing list. It saves space, is very lightweight, and folds up to pocket size. It is perfect to fill with beach items and essential hiking gear and it can hold some small photography equipment. We always have it as part of our travel gear list. Check it out on Amazon

Another accessory we keep in our bag is a small waterproof dry bag. Get dry bags that are lightweight. when kayaking, hiking through rain, or heading out on a boat, we love having our photography gear and even our wallets in a waterproof bag rather than a regular bag. Plus, if you are kayaking or canoeing, you can hook the bag onto the boat so you won’t lose your valuables. Buy it now

Unique Travel Gadgets

10. Hidden USB

Luckily she was organized and had all her travel documents backed up. You too can keep backups of all your documents in a USB that never has to leave your body. USB Bracelets and necklaces can hold all backups of your travel documents in one place. Get your Hidden USB here.

11. PacSafe Products

If you are traveling to an area where you don’t feel completely secure or if you are taking a lot of public transportation, we highly recommend PacSafe .

When traveling India, we wrapped the PacSafe’s steel coil around our bags and locked them to our seats and slept easily with peace of mind. When we stayed in questionable accommodation, we’d put all our electronics inside and lock them to something secure. It is amazing for peace of mind.

Read more at The Best Anti Theft Travel Bags and Accessories Another option for this is to get a padlock and bike chain. It doesn’t completely cover your bags, but it does secure your bags.

  • Pacsafe RFIDsafe Blocking Travel Organizer – This carries all my money, passports, and credit cards and it blocks anyone trying to steal our information.
  • PacSafe Bag Protector – the steel net goes around your luggage or backpack protecting against theft and you can lock it to anything. This is the best travel gear for anyone backpacking, staying in dorms, and taking a lot of public transport.

12. Iron Socket VPN

While it isn’t exactly a travel gadget and is more of a virtual gadget, this is a great addition for any traveler. If you are using public wireless wifi, a VPN can help to add security to your computer. If you have to do banking, you can cloak your IP address keeping others off your system. A VPN is a must for travel to countries like China too. Behind the iron curtain, you can still access Twitter and Facebook. We also love watching TV when traveling but we find that a lot of our favorite shows aren’t available overseas. A VPN allows you to change your computer’s IP address. Check out Iron Socket VPN

13. E Sim Card

We use Airola for our international sim card. It is a virtual e-sim and we don’t need to change any SIM Cards or put on any stickers. We just purchase data before leaving for our destination and then when we land, we activate the e-sim switching easily from our home sim to our travel sim.

14. Portable Wifi

We’ve been taking things one step further than a SIM Card these days. While traveling in Europe and always rent a MiFi. It’s a personal wifi that uses 3G and allows up to 5 devices at one time to use the Internet. It’s amazing to keep up to date on work and to stay connected with your friends and family.

You order it online and they deliver it to your hotel when you arrive. Once you are done with it, you send it back in the return envelope and you are all done. It’s that easy. There are a few options, we tend to use TepWireless.

Electronics Travel Gear

If you want to take your organization even further, this top-rated electronics organizer is economical, well laid out, durable, and the perfect size for traveling. What I like about its multiple elastic loops for all our cords and it has a holder for SD cards as well. See it here: BAGSMART Electronic Organizer Travel

Travel Gear Electronics

15. Laptop or Tablet

Even the regular traveler who isn’t working might want to carry a laptop or tablet these days. I have read that remote controls carry a ton of germs. Download your favorite series or travel movies and watch them on your laptop and then you can avoid the entertainment system on the plane and in your hotel room. My laptop has become one of my most used pieces of travel gear. The Macbook Pro 13 inch is small and lightweight like a MacBook Air, but it has the power of a full MacBook Pro for video and photography editing.

16. Portable Hard Drive

When taking travel photos, you want to make sure that you have memories to take home with you. It’s important to back up your photos while on vacation. I’m not lying when I say that we’ve met more than one person who has lost all their photos during their and didn’t back them up. Even if you want to keep the photos on your SIM Card until you get home, back them up on a hard drive too. We love the Samsung T5 2TB hard Drive. This tiny hard drive is as lightweight as it gets, it hold a ton of data and is high quality. I can edit videos directly on this.

17. Noise Cancelling Headphones or EarBuds

Whether you are on a flight, a bus, or a train, noise-canceling headphones are a lifesaver. Many times people are talking too loud, children are crying or there is a lot of noise in general. We put on our noise-canceling headphones (We like Apple’s earbuds pro) and with some mellow music, we sleep like a charm.

18. GoPro Hero 9

For waterproof sports cameras, you really can’t beat the GoPro. We have been using GoPros since they first came out and the GoPro Hero 9 is revolutionary. With a front screen, and a great mic for adventure travel (you don’t necessarily need an external mic for quick talking). It is waterproof, takes high-quality 5k video, and has amazing steadiness if fits all our needs. Add it to your travel gear today. Details here.

19. Kindle Paper White

I actually prefer reading on my iPad, but I have a Kindle as well and it’s great for the outdoors or in bright sun. Save browsing books on the shelf and browse on your own device so that you can sanitize and read with ease. Kindles are great for travel. They are lightweight, free up space (in comparison to several books) and save money. My Kindle editions of books are cheaper than hard copies. Get this Kindle Paper White – it is now also waterproof which is awesome at the beach or by the pool

Best Luggage and Accessories

20. Carryon Luggage

Known as the “Rolls Royce of Luggage”, Sterling Pacific is the top choice for luxury travelers, frequent fliers, and pilots. The 35 L carry-on weighs only 11.5 pounds and its streamlined design is made to fit in the overhead compartments while being roomy enough to hold clothes for a long weekend trip. Its elegant aluminum design is a head turner with full-grain Italian leather handles, a retractable full-aluminum trolley, and Aluminum Wheel Housings making it elegant yet durable.  If you are looking to buy a  gift for a traveler  in your life, or want to treat yourself to a luxury item, you will love this piece of luggage that stands out from the competition.

best luggage brands carryon level 8

Another favorite of our carry-on luggage is the Pro  Carry-On with Laptop Pocket  by Level8. It is a prime example of specialized, lightweight luggage. The bag is made with aerospace-grade material to maximize protection yet minimize unnecessary weight. It glides easily, has a pocket for my wallet and laptop and easily fits in most overhead compartments.

21. Roller Luggage / Suitcase

We have graduated from backpacks to TravelPro lolling luggage for our travels. When traveling to cities, islands, or resorts, we really love using proper luggage with wheels. The TravelPro is a high-quality travel bag that has lasted us for years. It is lightweight, durable, and fashionable. Our checked luggage is  TravelPro Maxite 5 Spinner  – If you are traveling to a place that has paved roads and sidewalks, this is the best travel gear for you. Four wheels make it easier to roll and they tend to be more durable.

22. Rolling Duffel

If you aren’t ready to make the switch to a suitcase Eagle Creek’s 28 Road Warrior  rolling duffel is fantastic. It’s not too big so you won’t overpack. it stands up on its own with ease and it is made for stacking packing cubes and wardrobe envelopes.

23. Backpack

Okay, I know I said we don’t use backpacks anymore for our luggage, but that is not entirely true. When traveling to Africa on Safari, to the polar regions on an expedition, or if we are going overland in Southeast Asia, a backpack is still the best option. They are easy to throw onto buses, carry over beaches, and lug through subway stations. We recommend the  Osprey Fairpoint for men  and the  Osprey Fairview for women.

Carryon vs Non-Carry On

Dave and I don’t do carry-on only. We have been traveling around the world for nearly two decades and we rarely travel carry-on only. What’s the reason? We carry a lot of camera gear when we travel and that pretty much fills up our travel bags. Between our drones, DSLR cameras, laptops, and hard drives, we wouldn’t have a lot of room for our clothing and toiletries.

Besides, we don’t just do beach vacations. We often backpack through mountains, and different climates so we travel with an array of gear including everything from winter layers to hiking boots and water shoes. Just make sure you have a care packing in your carry-on. If you do have a delay and have to wait for your travel bags you will want the essentials.

24. Adventure Camera Backpack

Shimoda Explore 40 adventure camera backpack is well organized and can hold all of my photography gear. In addition to that, it is durable, comes with a rain cover, has a waterproof zipper, utilizes a rear entry (so I don’t have to worry about thieves), it uses a modular insert system that allows me to customize the inside of the bag and take things in and out with ease and it is carry-on friendly. I use it for hiking and walking around the city. It is by far my favorite photography backpack to date.

25. Small Camera Bag

Deb uses the Peak Design Messanger Bag for her videography gear. It is a fantastic piece of gear that she wears over the shoulder. It carries my DSLR video camera, Go Pro Hero 8s, phone, and computer. Plus there are pockets for wallets and phones. Peak Design Everyday Messenger V2

Photography Gear

We have an entire article sharing our complete photography gear list .

You can take a lot of great photos these days with your smartphone, so if you aren’t looking for completely professional photos, our iPhone combined with the GoPro Hero 9 does the trick. But we also have a drone, 3 DSLRs (two for photography, and one for video) plus a small vlogging Sony camera. See our complete photography gear list here.

26. Collapsible Refillable Water Bottle

Get this collapsible water bottle to take through airport security and to reuse cutting down on waste. Staying hydrated helps your immune system so having water on hand is a must. Being Collapsible, it goes through security with ease and save space in your carry-on bag. Buy it here.

27. SteriPen

The SteriPen purifies water in a snap, it is a great compliment to your water bottle and it an essential part of our travel accessories. You can fill your reusable water bottle with tap water and even water from lakes and rivers and purify the water using the Steripens UV lighting. Another alternative that we have used is a LifeStraw. It is a great two-in-one water bottle and water purifier. But I prefer the water bottle with Streripen as I can purify a lot of water at once and I don’t have to drink out of a filter, I have an open lid. But check it out here and decide what works for you.

28. UV Phone Sanitizer

Let’s face it, our phones are a cesspool of germs. We carry them everywhere, they are a part of us, but we never clean them properly. This UV Phone Sanitizer and Charger kills 99% of bacteria and viruses that build up on your phone. It’s fast easy and will help to keep the germs away. Get it on Amazon for $27.95

29. More Travel Accessories for safety

It’s a good idea to pack a few travel essentials for hygiene and cleaning in your carry-on bags. Travel-size hand sanitizer spray, disinfectant wipes, and surgical gloves are great items to keep on hand. We always have surgical gloves in our first aid kit. Make sure they are lightweight, travel size to go through security (less than 50 ml)

  • Travel Size Lysol Disinfectant Wipes
  • Mrs. Myers Clean Day Antibacterial Spray Lavender Scent.
  • MedPride Surgical Gloves

30. Travel Insurance

We never travel without travel insurance and in a post-COVID World, this has never been more important. We have used our travel insurance on four continents including being airlifted out of the Amazon when Dave broke his back. We have several articles highlighting the importance of travel insurance that you can read below. But the best advice we can give is to call your company before you fly to ask about restrictions, what it includes, how much your deductible is, and what activities you are allowed to do on your vacation.

31. Ear Plugs

These may seem obvious, but I cannot tell you how many times I’ve forgotten my earplugs. Or I have forgotten to keep them on me while riding on a bus or train. If you don’t want to sleep with music, make sure you pack earplugs. When backpacking around the world on a budget, you will be staying in some pretty loud hotels (say someone snoring next door?) and earplugs are a must for any world traveler. Get them on Amazon

We now also use a white noise app and listen to the sound of a fan or ocean waves to rock us to sleep. It drowns out thumping music and loud neighbors.

32. Headlamp

I know what you are thinking. But I have a flashlight on my phone! That is true, but a headlamp is a must for hiking, camping, or even doing astral photography. It is more powerful than your phone light and it is hands-free so you can wear it on your head and get all your tasks done. We like to invest in a high-quality headlamp for optimal lighting and this Black Diamond headlamp is also rechargeable by USB. Read our tips for camping: 25 Camping Tips and Hacks for Happy Campers

Not a gadget, but I take several feet of gaffer tape (think duct tape for the real world) with me when I travel. It can be rolled on itself for travel (or around a qtip, if you must). Can be used for “field expedient repair” of shoes, pants, and bags.

Travel insurance is most important in Covid 19 Pandemic. Thanks for the article!

Why oh why have I only just came across your site! You guys are amazing. This list is so handy, a couple things I never thought about. I am about to make the move out to Australia and do a working holiday visa for a couple years before maybe making the full move out. Your guides are really helpful! Stay safe!

Hey guys – just came across your list. Great stuff! I love the Belkin surge protector. I never take a trip without mine. I would add the Dream Essentials Escape Luxury Sleep Mask – I honestly can no longer sleep without it. It has little eye sockets – awesomeness. Also a pack-it folder is a must. At least if the trip involves wearing descent looking clothes. I love the Bluff Works pants though. I’ll have to check them out.

Thanks for the tip on the mask. We’ll check it out. We’re also going to look for the folder, we have never had to worry about clothes looking good in the past, but now that we are doing more business travel, it’s becoming an issue and we didn’t know how to pack nice clothes without wrinkling them.

Ha, I love the list. I especially love the pegless clothes line as I usually had to wash my clothes during my trip. One thing I would suggest is this foldaway travel bag http://shop.thespicejourney.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=64&product_id=58 I have another version – black – but these ones are so cute. I love putting my last minute souvenirs-hunting in this bag.

I am so so happy you wrote this article – it has on it almost everything we have been talking about. Ugh – all my business ideas out the window haha! As you can imagine, packing up a motorbike is really challenging as both weight and size are critical.. very similar to backpacking. Sadly, we have 3 panniers to share so items are very, very limited. We have been looking into solar chargers, which may be a good addition..?

Love my clothesline and have to try the goodwill. Hope Bluffworks makes women’s travel pants soon!

*Hoboroll not goodwill – darn incorrect!

Wow! I want every single one of theses gadgets! They seem so useful! It’s a shame I’m reading this now, just a day before a 3 weeks holiday. I’ll make sure to check them out for next time!:)

Thanks for the list!!

Hoborolls is an idea but I just use my side pockets for small items, one for my 4 pairs of socks, and the other for my 5 pairs of Pop&Go PopandGo Knickers.

The digital age has taken the world by storm, with the introduction of the camera phone, photo digital imagery tools are at the fingertips of consumers today because they are built-in to low end and high end styled cellular devices that are the rage with American all over the country.,

Our personal internet page <"' http://www.prettygoddess.com/

Love the Hoboroll from GobiGear and the Belkin. Those are always in my gear bag. I’ll have to check out that VPN. I have been using Hide My Ass for a while now which is great too.

Ha, what is Hide My Ass? I like the sounds of it:-)

In China, we used Astrill, which is another really popular VPN. I don’t know about the HMN (other than the great name), but Astrill allows you to switch locations. Personally, I find Portland and Seattle to be the best connections.

If you can beat the Chinese government, you can beat anyone! Hehe

Awesome suggestions – I love finding things that just work, that just make sense. Keep the gear reviews coming!

This is a very good post. I want a hobo roll now.

Will do, we’re already gathering more ideas for gear that we’ve tried and loved.

Thanks! I’ve enjoyed using the Belkin many times. It helps at airports when the electrical outlets are all taken. I can offer to share and help others and myself! The Lacie HD has also been a useful travel ally. I look forward to checking out your other recommends.

I also suggest packing SPF clothing from SunPrecaution. http://luxurytravelmavens.com/destinations/spfclothesfortropicshome/ You still need Sunblock for your face and hands, but it can easily take care of the rest of you and is versatile for jungle, sea or restaurant. Happy Travels! @TravelExplorer

I love my pegless clothesline! Such a simple idea, but so useful!

Love the suggestions, going to look more into mifi.

One thing we use that saves us a bit of money traveling through Central and South America is the Steripen. You just pop it in your glass of tap water for 50 seconds, and hey presto, you have purified water! It’s crazy how buying bottled water all the time can eat into your travel budget.

Excellent list! I was looking at the Lacie Rugged Hard Drive a few days ago. I think the items 4, 6, 7 & 8 are must haves for any traveler these days.

Great stuff, I like these Go Sim and Mifi gadgets, I will go and buy those strait away

Can you use the Belkin surge protector overseas in countries that have 220V power? I’ve tried with others and they fry.

No, thats the only problem i have with it…since it is a surge protector, it cant handle autoswitching/220-240v. Otherwise, I take it everywhere, even using it on planes.

These are some cool gadgets!

Wonderful article. For me it has to be my Grid-it to keep all my wires neatly arranged and flat and GoToobs for perfect liquid travel containers. Now Im really hoping there’s a female equivalent to those gorgeous Bluff Work Pants to help with stylish travelling!

I have the clothesline and must admit that it is super useful.I’ll have to check our the hoboroll and mifi. Thanks for sharing.

Our readers could not get enough of this travel pillow from Trtl this past year. It's much different than your classic travel pillow : shaped like a supportive wrap for your neck, it takes up little space in your carry-on and weighs only 4.5 ounces. Bring this on your next long-haul flight, train ride, or road trip—your head and neck will thank you later.

travel gear definition

If you're headed on a red-eye flight, a sleep mask is a non-negotiable. You loved this one for its unique, contoured shape: It has raised sections over your eyes so it's not too restrictive or uncomfortable to sleep in, but lies flat around the nose and eyebrows to effectively block out light while you catch some ZZZs. It's easy to see why this Amazon bestseller has racked up over 71,000 five-star reviews.

Never eat off of a dirty airplane seat tray again! This $30 travel essential is a complete game changer—especially when you're stuck with limited space in the middle seat. The slim, lightweight cover slips over your seat tray like a pillow case, lending you a clean surface to eat and work on. It also features a few handy compartments to hold your Kindle, water bottle, earbuds, and any other in-flight must-haves.

travel gear definition

Is there a more stressful feeling than thinking you've lost your luggage? Our readers clearly think not, since Apple AirTags were among the most-purchased travel gear in 2023. Slip one of these tiny tags into your checked bags, duffels, or backpacks so you know exactly where your personal belongings are each step of the way. Use the Find My app on your phone to track your tag and never worry about where your luggage is ever again.

Is there a travel bag more versatile or more chic than good leather tote? Traveler contributor Lydia Mansel raved about Cuyana's popular Classic Easy Zipper Tote . The brand gave the Easy Tote a little facelift in 2023—it can now be fully zipped, making it an even more secure travel companion. It's lightweight, sleek, and the quality speaks for itself. You'll have this thing for years to come.

Calpak's Luka duffel is the perfect travel bag for weekend trips or long-haul flights (we like to use it as a personal item ). Carry it by its soft top handles or by its long adjustable strap. Features we love: the separate shoe compartment, trolley sleeve, and the several internal pockets to keep you organized. I've used many duffel bags over the years, but this one reigns supreme.

travel gear definition

Every packing list has to have a pair of comfortable walking shoes on it. We appreciate the effortless cool look and feel of New Balance shoes, especially the 547 Core sneaker. There's no break-in time needed and I've never gotten any blisters after wearing these—even after a long day trip.

If you haven't tried a pair of Allbirds yet, what are you waiting for? The brand is known for its ultra-lightweight, comfortable kicks—the kind that make sightseeing all day long on your feet a breeze. The Tree Runners are versatile enough to pack on any trip and take up little suitcase space.

travel gear definition

We all need some comfortable loungewear, whether you're working from home, boarding a long flight, or just relaxing in your hotel room. We love matching sets like one from Cozy Earth—the pullover and joggers are supremely soft, cool to the touch, and offer a perfectly relaxed fit without being too baggy.

travel gear definition

When it comes to packing toiletries like shampoo and conditioner, body wash, and moisturizer, you're going to need some leakproof, reusable travel bottles . Our editors swear by Cadence capsules: These airtight, magnetic capsules stay neatly together in your Dopp kit , take up little space, and are designed without any right angles or edges, so you can get as much product out as possible (this also makes them so easy to clean). Customize everything about your Cadence set—from the color and size to the number of capsules to what each label says. And while the original small capsules are a nice size for short trips, you can also grab the The Extender —an add-on that allows you to increase the size of the bottle when you need more room.

When Amazon Prime Day rolled around in July and then again in October, noise-canceling headphones were scooped up in droves. There are a lot of popular options on the market we love, like the Beats Studio3 wireless headphones. They'll block out all that extra noise on your next flight and let you comfortably listen to all your favorite movies in peace.

Image may contain: Tub, and Bathtub

More noise-canceling gear we recommend: the Apple AirPods Pro wireless ear buds. If you haven't tried these yet, now is the perfect time. These tiny earbuds come in an ultra-compact case that is small enough to fit in a crossbody bag or running waist pack. I use these every day—while I'm hiking, running, commuting to the office, and everything in between.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

Exercise dresses are still having a moment. The sporty yet feminine dress is reimagining activewear—it can be worn just as effortlessly to a workout class or a game of pickleball as it can be to a lunch date. Of our favorite styles, you loved this option from Outdoor Voices most. It offers breathable built-in shorts, adjustable straps, and side pockets, with a flattering silhouette that's neither tight nor restrictive. We have a feeling these will be just as popular again come spring.

Image may contain: Tool, Axe, Umbrella, and Canopy

Packing an umbrella seems like a waste of space, until you find yourself in a downpour without one. Traveler contributor Claire Volkman put a dozen options to the test ; this sturdy, wind-resistant, lightweight, and compact option from Weatherman was her favorite overall.

Image may contain: Strap

Keep your phone safe while at the beach, in a kayak, or on a boat with this waterproof pouch from Pelican. It comes with a lanyard to wear around your neck, but if it does go overboard, you can rest easy knowing it'll float on the surface.

travel gear definition

It's nearly impossible to keep clothes wrinkle-free in your suitcase. This becomes especially tricky when you're traveling for a special occasion, say a destination wedding , and you need to touch up formal wear upon arrival. This lightweight, portable steamer was a huge hit with our readers—and we see why: It weighs less than a pound, is easy to pack in your suitcase, and offers 10 minutes of continuous steam. The Nesugar steamer comes with a convenient wall mount, too, so you can keep it neat and tidy back at home.

What’s the difference between waterproof and water resistant? Truly waterproof gear means you can submerge the product under water and no moisture will get inside. Water resistant has a wider range of meaning. You’ll be fine in a drizzle, but should seek shelter for heavy rain. Find out what you need.

When you travel, you want gear that will prepare you for unexpected situations and can stand up to the elements — especially the natural. For wet destinations, whether it’s Seattle in the winter or Vietnam during rainy season, that means packing luggage, clothes, and technology that can withstand rain and water.

But with terms like water resistant, water repellant, and waterproof all used to describe rainy-weather gear, it can be hard to know if you’re buying what you need for your trip. In this article we’ll break down the difference between waterproof and water resistant, and which one you need for your next adventure.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Bring everything you need without checking a bag.

  • Carry-On-Sized
  • Easy to pack
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Built to last

What is Waterproof?

When gear, like backpacks or jackets , are labeled waterproof, it means it can resist water for a very long time. Typically, waterproof jackets and clothes are made of several layers of fabric to create a waterproof outer layer while ensuring breathability.

In reality though, no item of clothing is completely waterproof unless it’s welded seam rain gear–which is a good thing. The same seam welding techniques that keep water out also keep your body heat in, and reduce the breathability of the clothing. Instead, you’ll usually find jackets and clothing made form waterproof fabrics with several layers to ensure waterproofing and breathability coexist.

Truly waterproof builds are more common in backpacks and luggage , where you don’t necessarily need breathability. For textiles — like clothing, jackets, or backpacks — the main difference between waterproof and water-resistant is in the fabric and the construction.

What is Water-Resistant?

Water resistant gear is typically made from densely woven fabrics from materials like nylon and polyester. The density helps keep water from seeping in quickly, but it won’t keep it out forever. This is also different from water-repellant, which wards off water with a coating or treatment, sometimes called durable water repellent (DWR).

With water repellant fabrics, water beads up and rolls off the fabric.

Water repellant gear that uses a durable water repellent (DWR) finish on the exterior will fight moisture, keeping you dry in light rain or snow. They don’t have the extra layer of impermeable plastic membrane (like some waterproof fabrics would). But with repeated exposure to water, the DWR finish wears off, though you can buy a can of DWR and reapply it.

The bottom line: Don’t expect your water-resistant jacket or backpack to hold up under a monsoon of moisture. It’s not engineered for that type of battle, but it will help you stay dry as you scurry to the nearest cafe for shelter.

What’s the Difference Between Waterproof and Water Resistant?

Although many brands will use the two terms interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing. Water resistant gear, which generally refers to anything made from fabric, will keep water out for a time but not indefinitely. Waterproof gear is meant to resist water for even longer stretches of time. Especially with jackets, tents, backpacks, and other fabric-based gear, the main difference between the two is the seams: waterproof items are more tightly sealed.

How to Spot Waterproof Jackets, Clothing, and Bags

For waterproof jackets and clothes, look for taped or welded seams and a waterproof, breathable membrane (or similar waterproof technology) within the fabric itself. Seams are the weakest link in a fabric. It’s made of little holes that act as entry points for water. So, to have a waterproof jacket or backpack, your seams should be sealed or welded.

There are two kinds of sealed seams:

  • Critically seam sealed:  Only the upper body of the garment has sealed seams
  • Fully seam sealed:  All seams are sealed for max water tightness

And there are two ways to seal seams:

  • Taped seams:  Sealed with a waterproof tape
  • Welded seams:  Joined without stitching by using glue or conic bonding

If your gear doesn’t have welded seams, it’s not truly waterproof, even if the fabric is waterproof. For example, the Travel Backpack  is  made of waterproof sailcloth but is only  water resistant , because the seams are stitched, not welded.

If you’re still not sure how waterproof your clothing, jackets, or bags are, look at the hydrostatic rating. Here’s what each waterproof rating means:

How to Tell How Waterproof Electronics Are

Electronics can also be waterproof. You can tell how waterproof a smartphone or other electronics are by looking at the IP67 rating, which rans smartphones on how resistant they are to elements, like dust particles and water.

For example, the Samsung Galaxy S8 earned a IP67 rating. IP stands for International Protection marking.  The International Electrotechnical Commission created this standard .

The second number — 6, in this example — represents the smartphone’s resistance to dust, dirt and sand. A 6 rating means “no ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight)” after an 8-hour test.

The third number — 7 in this example — represents the water-tightness of your smartphone. A 7 rating means if your smartphone is immersed in water for up to 30 minutes, it should emerge in working order. An 8 rating — the highest rating — means the device survives for 30 minutes at depths of up to 1.5m.

What Fabrics are Water Resistant?

Most water resistant fabrics are made from nylon or polyester. However, it’s the density of the fabric, rather than the material, that helps its resistance to water.

Which is Better: Waterproof or Water-Resistant Gear?

Whether you need water resistant or waterproof gear depends on what you plan to do with it.

Luggage and Bags

The only thing that will be totally waterproof is a seam sealed dry bag, such as Sea to Summit’s dry bags . However, those aren’t built to function as luggage. Instead, if you’re traveling to a rainy destination a highly water-resistant bag, made of waterproof fabric with water resistant zippers, like the  Travel Backpack  will do the trick. For extra protection, use dry bags for items inside your luggage.

For all but the most extreme trips, water resistant luggage is usually enough. If you’re going to be only a few minutes in the rain then simple DWR coating is going to be plenty. If you’re going to spend some time standing in the rain, then perhaps a more robust water-resistance, like the waterproof sailcloth construction of Tortuga’s travel bags, is a better choice.

 Jackets and Clothing

If you’re going skiing, snowboarding, or taking long walks in tons of rain, a waterproof jacket will be your best option. However, you’ll still get a little bit wet in waterproof gear since there are big holes in it where your head, hands, and torso fit.

If you’re just about town, in a moderate climate where the rain isn’t likely to be torrential or last for hours, water-resistant is probably adequate. Even in Seattle, a good water resistant jacket will be perfectly fine in its consistent, but not torrential, rain.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on Gortex fabric and welded construction, you can get light water resistance with a DIY spray on coating to beef up the gear you already have.

The Best Waterproof Jackets

  • My favorite waterproof jacket is  FlyLow Gear’s Vixen jacket  with 20,000m waterproofing and taped seams.
  • For a more urban-ready, waterproof jacket, writer Jessie Beck swears by the Arc’teryx Andra Coat .
  • Shawn breaks down the  best options for winter jackets in this post.

Electronics

While many newer electronics will resist water for a short period of time, the only way to really keep them safe from water is with a waterproof case. This is a good idea if, for example, you want to take photos underwater while snorkeling or plan on hiking in some serious rain.

There are a range of options for waterproofing your tech. From  glorified clear plastic bags  with roll top and velcro and zip seals, to high end waterproofing that will allow you to take your electronics to depth while SCUBA diving. For most people that’s too much.

Smartphone Case

Below are three of our top choices for a waterproof smartphone case:

  • Mpow Universal Waterproof Case  ($8) is a plastic case for your smartphone: rates 4.5 stars out of 5 based on 5,600+ reviews
  • Lifeproof FRE Waterproof Case  ($29) is an actual case: rates 3.5 stars out of 5 based on 1,400+ reviews
  • ImpactStrong iPhone 6 Waterproof Case  ($20) rates 4 stars out of 5 based on 1,000 reviews

For more serious waterproof cases,  Lifeproof  and  Otterbox  have solid choices.

When is Waterproof Too Much?

Waterproof is actually a bad idea if you need breathability in your gear. When you buy your  jacket , you’re seeking a balance between water protection and breathability. However, the very definition of waterproof means water can’t get in. It also means water (i.e. sweat) can’t get out and can turn your jacket into a portable swamp cooler if you’re in a humid area. True waterproof material isn’t breathable.

When is Waterproof Just Right?

Exploring rainforest and equatorial jungles during the rainy season? Planning to watch a baseball game in a downpour? What about sailing around the world or spending lots of time out on the water? Waterproof is what you want. For your outerwear and dry bags, pick fabric that has a waterproof rating of 11,000 mm and above.

As for gear, your smartphone has an average risk of 20% of being liquid damaged as estimated by  Scott Adam Gordon of Android Authority . Yep, that’s including the risk of dropping it in the toilet. You can buy a water-resistant phone, but they’re more expensive. My recommendation? Buy a waterproof case for your smartphone.

Whether you opt for water resistant or waterproof gear will depend on the adventure you have ahead of you, your budget, and needs. Stay dry, travelers.

Touring Gear Essentials

Adventure Cycling Staff

Whatever riding, camping, and travel gear is lurking in your closet, we promise that someone has ridden around the world using older, worse, and less.

You can head out for a trip using what you already have, and if you’re looking to add or upgrade to your collection it’s easy to start small and focus on a few essentials to make life easier on the road.

Modify the following list depending on your personal needs and past experiences. Keep in mind that you generally won’t need any more gear for a 90-day tour than for a seven-day tour.

On-the-bike Clothing

  • Cycling helmet
  • Touring shoes — good for walking as well as riding, i.e. some flex in the sole
  • Cycling gloves
  • Cycling shorts
  • Socks — wool or synthetic
  • Leg warmers or tights for riding (rain pants could substitute)
  • Short-sleeved shirts
  • Light, long-sleeved shirt for layering and sun protection
  • Rain gear, jacket and pants
  • Waterproof shoe covers

Off-the-bike Clothing

  • Comfortable shorts
  • Comfortable pants (zip-off legs or rain pants could substitute)
  • Sandals, flip-flops, or lightweight shoes
  • Wool or fleece hat
  • Wool sweater or fleece jacket
  • Gloves — wool or fleece

Determine your needs and wants for touring by bicycle.

Miscellaneous Things to Consider Packing

  • Towel (lightweight to enhance quick drying, like the PackTowl)
  • Pocket knife or Leatherman (pliers and other tools are handy)
  • Lightweight lock and cable
  • Water-carrying bladders or containers — at least one U.S. gallon capacity
  • Basic first-aid kit with emergency numbers
  • Bandanas (many uses!)
  • Flashlight and/or headlamp
  • Insect repellent
  • Bungee cords
  • Water filter
  • Camera and journal
  • Bear spray and cords to hang bear bags (where appropriate)

Bike Tools and Spare Parts

  • Tire levers and patch kit
  • Spare tube (and tire , depending on the trip)
  • Blue Loctite (keeps bolts in tightly)
  • Electrical tape
  • Spoke wrench
  • Spare spokes sized for your bike’s wheels
  • Allen wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Small vice grips
  • Brake cable
  • Derailer cable
  • Extra nuts, bolts, and wire (particularly for racks)
  • Assorted zip ties
  • Small bottle of chain lube and rag
  • Bicycle lights front and rear
  • Rearview mirror
  • Spare brake pads
  • Spare clipless-pedal cleat bolts
  • Duct tape

Camping Gear to Pack

  • Sleeping bag (down bags are warmer, weigh less, and pack smaller, but useless if wet; synthetic bags are heavier and bulkier, but less expensive for comparable warmth, and they will keep you warm even if wet)
  • Sleeping pad (closed-cell foam pads work well and are light, but self-inflating pads are more comfortable and packable)
  • Tent (lightweight, with rainfly and vestibules)
  • Ground cloth (this will extend the life of your tent)
  • Personal eating utensils (fork, spoon, cup, bowl)
  • Sleeping bag liner (a cotton sheet sewn in half works well for this; it can be easily removed for washing and used independently of the sleeping bag on warm nights)
  • Stove (a small backpacking stove with fuel and fuel bottle(s))
  • Cooking equipment (small pots and pans — backpacking equipment works best and is lightweight)

What Does 'Raw-Dogging' a Flight Mean? All About the Viral Travel Trend

Plane passengers are boasting about going without any form of entertainment in the air

For most travelers, a long flight means browsing the on-demand movie offerings, binge-watching Netflix on their phone, or just listening to a podcast.

Not so for “raw-doggers.”

A new TikTok trend sees plane passengers boasting about enduring an entire flight without any form of entertainment or distraction: no phone, no tv, no books, no music. Some even forgo the free snacks.

“Just raw-dogged a 7-hour flight (new personal best),” a U.K.-based DJ named Wudini announced in a video posted June 4 that now has more than 13 million views. “No headphones, no movie, no water, nothing.”

Numerous other TikTokers have been documenting their activity-free flights for the past several months. “My beige flag is that I raw dog flights,” wrote Veronica Skaia in January. “No headphones. No movies. I just stare into the abyss for hours and watch the little gps plane.”

Australian musician Torren Foot also got in on the trend, writing on Tuesday, June 25, “Just raw dogged it, 15hr flight to Melbourne, no music, no movies, just flight map (I counted to 1 million twice).”

A TikTok user named Michelle took to the social media platform to comment on how few of her fellow passengers seemed to be watching anything other than the flight map during a five-hour trip from New York to San Francisco.

“I have never seen so many people raw-dogging a flight in my life,” she wrote. “Literally just staring straight ahead the entire time?”

Another TikToker who goes by West shared in May that he’d “successfully completed” a seven-hour flight viewing only the flight maps.

“Anyone else bareback flights?” he wondered in the accompanying caption, seemingly introducing some new borrowed jargon for the movement.

“I've got DMs on Instagram like, ‘Bro, you need to teach us how to bareback flights,’” West told GQ .

“I got sick of watching the same movies,” he added, comparing the quiet flying style to meditation. “Visually, you are kind of impaired. You only get to look at the seat in front of you, to your right or left if you're at the window. All you hear is that drumming sound of the engine. It's just white noise.”

The trend prompted some social media users to reminisce about a memorable TV character who was an early adopter of raw-dogging flights: David Puddy, Elaine Benes’ on-and-off beau on Seinfeld.

In the season 9 episode “The Butter Shave,” Puddy (Patrick Warburton) irritated Elaine ( Julia Louis-Dreyfus ) by refusing her offer of something to read while flying home from a European vacation, opting instead to simply stare straight ahead.

“Respectfully, you are not ‘rawdogging’ if you watch the flight map,” read one post on X (formerly Twitter). “Puddy was staring at the back of the seat in front of him. man up.”

What is EDC? Everyday Carry: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide

Avatar photo

What was once a niche hobby and lifestyle for some has undoubtedly become mainstream in recent years. You may have heard the term “EDC“ when shopping for a new backpack or in a YouTuber‘s video about all the tech they use. Given that context, it clearly isn’t referring to that Electric Daisy Carnival rave, so what’s it all about?

In this article, we’ll explain the phenomenon of everyday carry, commonly known as the initialism EDC, and why you should think about what’s in your pockets.

While this guide is aimed toward beginners, seasoned EDCers might find some helpful information here too. If anything, you can use it for some validation to justify your gear obsession or share it with friends to assure them there’s a method to the madness.

This article was first published on April 9, 2015. It was last updated on June 4, 2024.

What Does EDC Stand For?

EDC stands for “ Every Day Carry .” Your everyday carry is the collection of items you carry with you in your pockets or your bag on a daily basis.

They’re the things you tap your pockets for before you head out the door, the things you feel naked without, and the things that would throw off your whole day if you had to do without them. They are especially valuable, and not just monetarily or sentimentally. Your everyday carry consists of items that you find truly essential.

This means things like pocket lint, scrunched-up receipts, gum wrappers, and other disposables might live in your pocket (hopefully not for very long), but they don’t count as part of your everyday carry. Mainstays in your carry should have certain qualities that fall in line with a few different principles of the practice of everyday carry.

The everyday carry philosophy is built upon the cornerstones of utility and preparedness. Each component of your EDC should serve a purpose or have at least one specific, useful function.

Every day, your EDC essentials prepare you for the worst and empower you to do your best.

Why Should You Have An Everyday Carry Kit?

As the saying goes, it’s better to have and not need than to need and not have. Most people can get value from an everyday carry in average day-to-day situations. For example, I used a pocket knife at my baby nephew’s birthday party to get his gift out of the packaging. Then I used my multi-tool’s screwdriver to open the battery compartment and load up some fresh AAs so he could play with it right away. Later, my EDC lighter saved the day when it was time for cake, and there were no matches to be found.

While this example is relatively tame, an EDC can mean the difference between life and death in emergency situations. Imagine getting into a car accident, and your seatbelt won’t come undone, or your door won’t open—a pocket knife or pocket tool with a glass breaker can save you from that situation.

Another important reason to have an everyday carry kit is for peace of mind. You might not end up needing to use everything in your EDC all of the time every day, but when you finally do, you’ll be glad you were prepared.

What’s awesome is that everybody already has an everyday carry at some level. But by thinking of what you keep in your pockets as your actual everyday carry system, you can enjoy a wealth of benefits:

  • You’ll be prepared to handle tasks better: By adding new tools, you can access all sorts of new functions that make your life or your day easier. Or, by taking an EDC approach to upgrading essentials you already use, you can maximize their performance and efficiency, giving you a better ‘in use’ experience overall.
  • You won’t have to rely on other people: Having these tools at the ready every day will not only equip you for most of your daily routine, but also for unexpected situations. Your EDC will help you make quick work of things you might otherwise need help doing.
  • You’ll save time: Sometimes, you might not even need assistance to get things done, but rather you’d have to waste time trying to find the right tool you need. With a well-built EDC, you won’t have to dig through junk drawers, ask to borrow a pen, or give up on something and tell yourself you’ll bring that tool you needed next time. EDC items are convenient and make your life easier!
  • You’ll save money (in theory): If you invest in essentials that can withstand daily wear and perform up to your standards enough to make the cut of your EDC, you could potentially be saving in the long run. Opting for well-made, reliable, and durable goods means you won’t spend more to replace inexpensive, cheaply made disposable items every few months. If you’ve already caught the EDC bug, you might know this isn’t true all the time. But many EDC goods achieve a balance of quality and value that reach “buy it for life” status, so you can buy once and get your money’s worth.
  • You can express yourself: The individualization of your EDC is arguably one of the most important aspects of the lifestyle. What you carry and use says so much about you, what you do, what your preferences are, and so on. It’s a great outlet for expression that you’ll recognize in truly unique carries. Refining your kit to reflect you as a person is one of the most fun reasons to look for new gear.

What are the Everyday Carry Essentials?

There isn’t an all-in-one solution for all your daily essentials — you’ll have to develop a system of multiple items. You’re probably familiar, if not already carrying this first core of essentials. For most people, they step out the door after passing a three-touch pocket check of the following:

travel gear definition

There’s no denying that modern smartphones allow us to do more than ever before. No other device can match a cell phone’s functionality and sheer versatility and still fit the palm of your hand. Through accomplishments in hardware alone, our smartphones reduce the need to carry a camera, watch, pen and paper, flashlight, and wallet, for many people. This is great for minimalists, but the rest of the world doesn’t operate entirely digitally. In many cases, there isn’t an app for that.

Wallets keep our credit cards , IDs, cash, and other paper documents organized and nearby. The wallet itself might not be as important as what’s inside it, but it serves a critical purpose in protecting these essential assets from damage and loss. An example of a good EDC wallet is one that’s ultra-slim, so it can free up pocket space for other everyday carry items. RFID-blocking is another common feature of modern wallets, protecting you from identity theft.

Keys let us go places and secure what’s important to us. Keychains deserve a spot in your EDC because they keep your keys consolidated and easy to use. For many people, the search for a better way to manage their  keyring is their entry point to the world of EDC. Most well-considered everyday carry setups include a great keychain or key organizer to keep their keys silenced and organized instead of a clunky, jangly mess.

travel gear definition

The fact that many everyday carries include a pocket knife comes as a surprise to many. While laws and cultural differences might portray these edged essentials in a negative light, a well-designed, reasonably sized pocketknife is primarily a tool. When used responsibly, an  EDC knife (such as a Swiss Army Knife) safely handles cutting and slicing tasks — usually better than a house key, a pair of scissors, your hands, or even your teeth can. There’s certainly no app for breaking down a box, slicing into brisket, or cutting cordage! With that said, not everyone will need a folding knife, or even be able to carry one legally. But it’s important to view them for their practicality more than anything.

You would bring an umbrella for a 50% chance of rain, so why wouldn’t you bring a flashlight for a 100% chance of darkness every night? From getting through power outages to looking under couches to navigating a dimly lit path, having a light source in your pocket will come in handy. Some might be content with using their phone’s screen or camera flash for light. Modern lights, with multiple modes and a dedicated battery, perform far better in daily tasks to emergency situations without draining your phone’s battery even more, making them a must-have in many carries.

The multi-tool embodies many core principles of EDC—utility, versatility, and portability. For quick fixes, tinkering, and other handy work, having a toolbox’s worth of functionality in a single pocketable tool is invaluable. Common multi-tool functions include pliers, screwdrivers, bottle openers, scissors, and other cutting tools. Multi-tools can complement the functions of the five aforementioned essentials when weight and pocket space are at a premium, so naturally, they round out the second trinity of EDC.

travel gear definition

Not everything is digitized just yet. And sometimes, writing with a pen beats tapping away with your thumbs at your phone. An EDC pen takes care of common workplace tasks like jotting notes, signing paperwork, or drawing out diagrams to explain something. Some people prefer to keep a tactical pen handy for emergency situations too. Check out our guide on Why You Should Carry a Pen for even more reasons to keep ink close by.

What’s a great pen without something to write on? Soft cover pocket notebooks have recently been growing in popularity in the EDC community. Learn more about why you’d want to carry a notebook in our earlier Carry Smarter article!

Sure, you can keep track of time by checking your smartphone, but then you’d have to go through the trouble of pulling it out of your pocket. This can come off as rude, especially with company around. Dedicated watches are beautiful in their own right, but they help you keep track of time without depending on short-term phone battery life while always being one flick of the wrist away.

The sky’s the limit regarding what else you can carry in your EDC. Here are a few more examples of popular carry items.

You don’t need a vice to have a reason for carrying a lighter. Besides the obvious, they can come in handy for any situation that calls for lighting a fire. Think starting a campfire, lighting candles for a birthday cake, or during a power outage. A lighter also helps with some DIY repairs and crafts, like working with electrical heat shrink or finishing the edges of freshly cut paracord.

Portable Charger

With such a reliance on our devices for work and play, many people keep a power bank or portable charger in their carry. They’re especially useful when traveling or commuting when you need to stay connected but don’t have access to a power outlet nearby. In general, they extend the longevity of other tech essentials you might be carrying, like a phone, camera, handheld game console, or even your EDC flashlight.

EDC Gear Bag

Some EDC purists define the scope of the term to one’s pockets. But pockets alone aren’t always enough. Many EDCers opt to carry a dedicated EDC gear bag to better hold, organize, and protect their essentials. Students and professionals might commute with a backpack for their laptops. Creatives and photographers might have a bag for their gear. Travelers and bike commuters might need a sling bag or fanny pack for easy access without all the bulk of a full-on backpack.

At the end of the day, a bag is a sensible choice if you need to carry more gear than can fit in your pockets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The idea of carrying all of these items might be overwhelming. But don’t worry, you don’t have to carry everything on this list for a perfectly capable carry. Everyday Carry is all about making a setup that fits your needs. Just as no two people are exactly alike, their respective EDCs will vary significantly. Acquire and carry what you need according to your lifestyle, location, profession, daily routine, style, budget, etc.

Your carry should generally be reliable and functional, but most importantly, personal. You might be a minimalist at heart, or you’d have peace of mind knowing all your bases are covered. If your EDC becomes an extension of you, you should be completely comfortable with it! A great EDC shows the foresight to include what you personally need for your day-to-day, and the restraint to leave behind what you don’t.

Where Should I Start?

You should start by upgrading things you know you already would carry every day, rather than trying to add a bunch of different EDC items that ultimately might not be as useful or suit your needs. The wallet is a great gateway item for getting into EDC. Your current wallet might be worn out or needlessly bulky, so swapping to a minimalist EDC wallet is a safe way to learn what the philosophy is all about.

After that, if your local laws permit, a folding knife is often the next step to upgrade your carry game.

When adding new items, try highly recommended budget products so you‘re not investing so much into something that might not work out for you. For an example of great budget items, check out our earlier buying guide .

What are the EDC must-haves?

While there’s no hard and fast rule about what you must carry in your EDC, there are some helpful “cores” of items that enthusiasts commonly swear by. The first is the knife, flashlight, and multi-tool trinity. Ounce for ounce, those three items deliver the most utility to any setup. “Write, slice, light” is another popular trinity of a pen, knife, and flashlight.

What is the Ultimate Best Setup?

You might have an idea of your “holy grail” items, but even those will be highly personal and specific to your individual needs. That’s the beauty of EDC — there is no one ultimate best setup. A huge part of the fun is the journey of dialing in your collection of gear and figuring out what’s best for you.

What if my needs change often?

There are a couple of schools of thought here. Since your everyday carry is modular, meaning you can change out or add single items as needed, you can build out your kit to be versatile enough to cover as many potential bases and situations as possible. Others like to assemble specialized kits for different situations and swap them out accordingly. An easy way to do this is with pouches or pocket organizers loaded with a gear rotation suitable for the task or situation at hand.

If this beginner’s guide gave you a better understanding of EDC, or if you think your friends would appreciate this breakdown, please share it with them so more of us can enjoy EDC together!

NBC Select Travel Awards 2024: The best hardshell and softshell suitcases

Away and Bagsmart are just a couple of the brands that made our list of the best suitcases to shop.

At NBC Select, we spend hours researching, testing and reviewing products so that you can be more selective and informed about the things you buy. For our first-ever NBC Select Travel Awards, we spent months thoroughly testing travel gear covering various categories.

We traveled across the globe to Tokyo with hardshell suitcases and packing cubes , commuting to and from our New York City office with weekenders and duffel bags and tried toiletry bags , noise-canceling headphones and more.

After all of our testing, we collected thoughtful feedback for every product. After sifting through all editors’ reviews, we found the products deserving of the Travel Award winner’s stamp of approval.

Below, we rounded up the best hardshell and softshell suitcases, plus information about how we evaluated each product.

How we picked the best hardshell and softshell suitcases.

Arguably one of the most important types of bags you’ll take with you on a long-haul trip, a great hardshell and softshell suitcase should be durable, spacious, easy to maneuver and able to hold up well against scratches, scuffs and potential damage (especially if you regularly check in your bags).

  • Durability: Overall, we wanted to see that once the bag was fully packed, it was easy to pull and roll around on various surfaces, including carpet, tile and pavement. We also wanted to see if the fully packed suitcases held their shape well with items like clothes and shoes inside. Plus, it was important to ensure that the suitcases held up well against elements such as water or accidental spills.
  • Maneuverability: Similar to durability, we prioritized maneuverability in the hardshell softshell suitcases we tested. We wanted to ensure the handles weren’t flimsy or prone to breaking, especially after pulling and handling the bag for hours. Additionally, we wanted to make sure the suitcases were relatively easy for the average person to lift and carry if they plan on using them as carry-ons.
  • Spaciousness: We wanted to make sure the suitcases we awarded had sufficient room to hold common articles of clothing such as t-shirts, pants, shorts, underwear, and certain types of shoes. Ideally, the bag would hold at least a few days' worth of outfits. We also wanted to make sure they were compatible with packing cubes, which help to keep belongings more organized.

Best hardshell suitcases

Best overall hardshell suitcase: away the bigger carry-on.

Away The Bigger Carry-On

Away The Bigger Carry-On

Away’s The Bigger Carry-On is the best overall hardshell suitcase because it delivered when it came to all of our testing criteria. This Away suitcase, as the name implies, is a subtly larger version of the brand’s standard carry-on suitcase. The bag can fit multiple packing cubes and has ample room for clothing, toiletries and shoes. It also comes with a small bag for storing dirty laundry.

Additionally, it comes with a TSA-approved lock, which NBC Select associate reporter Bianca Alvarez found useful during her travel testing.  “I loved using this carry-on and was able to pack roughly around 10 days worth of clothes with the help of packing cubes,” she says. “I also thought that the inside features were convenient.” Aside from space for clothing, it also has straps and buckles, which help flatten and secure the items in the bag, which makes it easier to close. The handle is easy to adjust and the wheels roll smoothly and handle various surfaces well, whether upright or at an angle.

Best lightweight hardshell suitcase: Quince 21” Carry-On

Quince 21” Carry-On

During our testing, we found that the Quince 21” Carry-On balances durability and maneuverability well. While the suitcase keeps belongings safe and secure, it’s also easy to lift and place in an overhead compartment or into the trunk of a car, especially when it is fully packed. NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin tested the bag and loved how well it handled different terrain. “I dragged this bag through the streets of New York, on multiple flights, checked and not checked, and dragged it up flights of stairs and it looks great,” she says. While the bag is prone to some scrapes (the case with many hardshell bags), it comes with a small sponge to help wipe scuffs away.

Best budget hardshell suitcase: Bagsmart Carry-On

Bagsmart Carry-On

Bagsmart Carry-On

The Bagsmart Carry-On can hold a surprisingly large amount given its size, according to NBC Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg, who tested the bag. “I was really impressed by this carry-on. Its dimensions are smaller than the average carry-on,” she says. “But it held a lot of things and the quality is good for the price.” The suitcase is slightly smaller than the standard carry-on size for most major airlines but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice space for storing clothing or other travel items. It also has 360-degree wheels, an adjustable handle with four heights, TSA-approved locks on the zippers, multiple compartments for organizing clothes and an expandable zipper on the side.

Best softshell suitcases

Best overall: thule subterra 2 carry-on spinner.

Thule Subterra 2 Carry-On Spinner

Thule’s Subterra 2 suitcase is the perfect softshell carry-on for your travel needs, whether you’re using it for a quick trip or taking it on a long-haul vacation. Former NBC Select editorial operations manager Shari Uyehara says that while testing the bag, it “helped make traveling a lot easier” — she loves its sleek, stylish design, and how well it’s held up after multiple trips. It’s made from a polycarbonate shell and a durable nylon/polyester blend that’s designed to be water-resistant and to withstand the impact of travel wear and tear, according to the brand.

The suitcase also includes an easily-accessible removable panel that compresses your clothes to maximize packing space, which Uyehara says she loves most of all. “I love how spacious it is and that it can easily hold all of my items,” she says. She also says that, compared to other carry-on suitcases she’s tried, this one is lightweight and very easy to wheel around.

Best lightweight: Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Malin, who’s never used soft-shell luggage before, says that this suitcase is “ideal to use for a short trip”, because of its spacious yet lightweight design. When testing the suitcase for a weekend trip, Malin says she fit three full day outfits, three pairs of pajamas and three workout outfits inside of the suitcase’s main compartment, plus underwear, bras and socks.

It’s made from Calpak’s puffy, polyester Luka material, which the brand says is designed to withstand travel — the flexible material also makes it easier to close (and overstuff, according to Malin). The carry-on also has 360-degree spinner wheels and two front pockets with a padded laptop compartment, which Malin says is her favorite part of the bag. “The sleeve makes it really easy to take my laptop out, which would be super helpful if I was going through security at the airport,” she says. Malin says she can store extras like her resistance bands and Bala bangles in the larger part of the pocket, and it’s an easy bag to wipe clean.
