Changi’s latest innovation aims to serve passengers better – Safe Travel Concierge

Delivering a pleasant and stress-free experience for every passenger that passes through its doors has always been a key focus for Changi Airport. With evolving border safety requirements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) Airport Operations Management team looked to see how travel to Singapore could be made easier and more seamless for travellers.

Developed by Changi Airport’s Digital, Innovation, Ventures and Analytics (DIVA) team , Safe Travel Concierge (STC) is a handy tool for passengers. What was originally a site for travellers to book and pay for their Covid-19 Arrival swab test at the onset of the pandemic is now a one-stop portal that acts as a personal travel companion for passengers. With STC, travellers no longer need to go through multiple websites to search out and complete their pre-travel requirements. Not only does it allow travellers to book and pre-pay for their arrival Covid-19 test, it also guides users through a customised list of pre-travel requirements, based on their profile and trip details.

The prototype was first developed and trialled, with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, at the pilot hybrid tradeshow in Singapore in November 2020 – TravelRevive . It helped participants to ensure that they had completed all the necessary travel requirements before flying to Singapore, so that they could attend the event safely.

When asked how the idea for STC came about, Lucas Lee, Manager of Changi Airport’s Development Operations team, said, “Researching for information online was challenging and confusing for many passengers, as different countries have different requirements, and they could change from day to day. We wanted to make it easy for incoming travellers to navigate the pre-travel requirements to Singapore.”

Following the success of the STC trial at TravelRevive, the team continued to work on the prototype for several months, integrating more functions such as being able to cancel bookings for the Arrival swab test through STC. Thereafter, multiple rounds of user testing were done with various user profiles to ensure that the design of the portal is intuitive and user-friendly.

Since the launch of STC, take-up rate has been high. “We see more than 1,000 sign-ups a day and we expect this number to grow as travel resumes,” said Lucas. “We are also working with local and overseas travel agents to further encourage use of the portal.”

He added that the team is looking to add more functions to the portal to better serve the needs of passengers such as having a group booking feature and allowing users to access Wi-Fi at Changi Airport. “We are collecting feedback and will continue to improve the portal to ensure STC remains accurate and relevant with new government regulations and advisories.”

STC is another step taken by CAG to enhance the traveller experience as Changi prepares for the resumption of travel with the reopening of international borders. Passengers travelling to Singapore are encouraged to use the portal for a smooth arrival at Changi Airport.

Changi Airport Group has introduced a new Safe Travel Concierge (STC) for passengers flying into Singapore, offering personalised pre-travel guidance and COVID-19 test booking.

The online concierge service allows passengers to book their on-arrival COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and check that they have completed all pre-travel requirements for entry into Singapore.

After registering for an STC account, passengers then need to add their upcoming trips. Depending on their profile and trip details, they will be shown a customised list of pre-travel requirements to complete before flying to Singapore. In addition to booking their on-arrival PCR test, passengers can also access services such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s electronic Arrival Card and Health Declaration form through STC. Passengers can also stay updated with the latest COVID-19 news on the portal.

CAG’s Managing Director for Airport Operations Management Jayson Goh said the online concierge service can ease the anxiety of air travel by helping passengers navigate their pre-travel requirements. “As we prepare for the reopening of international borders, Changi Airport continues to innovate and leverage technology to ensure a safe and pleasant traveller experience for our passengers. With the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, we first trialed the STC prototype at TravelRevive, the first hybrid tradeshow in Singapore. We are glad to launch it today for all passengers and encourage them to use it for a smoother experience at Changi Airport.”

Planning air travel into Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic is now easier and more seamless following the launch of the new Safe Travel Concierge (STC) by Changi Airport Group (CAG).

The online concierge service lets passengers book their on-arrival COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and check that they have completed all pre-travel requirements all in the palm of their hand for a safe and smooth entry into Singapore. Instead of searching different websites to apply for their pre-travel documents, passengers can easily access the information and forms through the STC.

After registering for an STC account, passengers just need to add their upcoming trips. Depending on their profile and trip details, they will be shown a customised list of pre-travel requirements to complete before flying to Singapore.

Besides booking their on-arrival PCR test upon arrival at Changi Airport , passengers can also access services such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s electronic Arrival Card and Health Declaration form through STC. Passengers can also stay updated with the latest COVID-19 news with the portal.

Changi Airport Group’s Managing Director for Airport Operations Management, Jayson Goh, said that the online concierge service can ease the anxiety of air travel by helping passengers to navigate their pre-travel requirements: “As we prepare for the reopening of international borders, Changi Airport continues to innovate and leverage technology to ensure a safe and pleasant traveller experience for our passengers. He proactively engaged with the government stakeholders and supported them in safeguarding aviation through strong confidence building measures for travellers, such as developing several indigenous technology solutions like air circulation with six changes per hour and a combination of UV and plasma disinfection systems to provide safest journey experience to their passengers. Under his leadership, DEL has been forefront of implementing safety measures which was later adopted across the country.

Despite lockdown, Jaipuriar ensured that DEL was operational for rescue missions, medical evacuations, and transporting medical essentials to various parts of the country. He further led the Vande Bharat Mission flights of Government of India (a rescue mission to get Indians back to India), as well as rescue flights by other international governments. His outstanding leadership across all areas across the stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem and going beyond the call of duty in managing and navigating this crisis for a national capital airport having national importance makes him the apt choice for the Person of the Year Award.

Eng. Adnan Saggaf

Adnan Saggaf continues to demonstrate strong leadership skills throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and brought out of the box ideas in attracting traffic and to support his team during this difficult time. With new innovative ideas in balancing cash flow, the facilities were kept maintained and the personal were kept employed.

Saggaf has protected the financial stability of his staff income, ensured valuable cost cutting management, shown excellent performance of crisis management, and exceptional negotiation skills shown with authority regarding agreement restructuring and receivable payments.

To handle the loss of Umrah traffic to the airport, Saggaf chose to attract new airlines, mainly LCCs, to use the terminal with attractive offers and more reliable services. He built a new strategy by diversifying the airport offers. He prepared the facilities by deploying new technology and working on enhancing passenger experience. Saggaf also initiated a capacity building programme for the airside team by drafting SOPS, training and coaching, as well as initiating dedicated workshops to discuss ideas and to deploy new initiatives.

Leaders show strength in difficult times, and this is exactly what Saggaf showed and why he deserves to be awarded as the Person of the year 2021.

Peter Hall

Peter has been with the Sangster International Airport for over 25 years.

He has experience in customer service, operations and now oversees the security function and is also the Chief Operations Officer.

Peter has been instrumental in co-ordinating the preparation and implementation of a COVID-19 response plan for not just MBJ, but to guide the operation of all agencies operating on airport. The aim of this plan was to ensure a safe environment for staff and the travelling public; therefore, this plan was instrumental to establish consumer/travellers/public confidence and provided information and guidelines on the new protocols implemented at the airport.

Peter is well known for his expertise in investigation and aviation security. His co-operation with law enforcement stakeholders has been unrelenting in assuring the security of the airport and stakeholders alike.

While Peter is known as a firm individual that displays the outmost professionalism and integrity, he operates on the basis of equity and fairness in all matters relating to staff, clients, passengers and the general public.

Robson Freitas

Robson Freitas has developed and led the BH Airport plan for the resumption of airport operations post-COVID-19, as well as being responsible for leading the group of Directors and Managers at the airport, defining the three main pillars of recovery: Health and Safety of People, Institutional and Integrated Communication and Institutional Partners. These central pillars include ensuring hygiene and health and social distances measures for passengers, users, and the airport community, in addition to participating in strategic committees involving the public sectors to comply with regulatory rules. Freitas developed the COVID guardians programme, who were responsible in monitoring and following up on the measures already implemented for COVID-19 and advising users, employees and other people on compliance with distancing, hygiene and health measures recommended by health authorities. He also developed a COVID booklet with information and guidance for the airport community regarding good hygiene and health practices and led the beginning of the publication of a monthly newsletter with passenger curve information, allowing the planning of reopening and rehiring by commercial stores. Freitas also supported the reduction of OPEX by planning the temporary closure of areas, toilets and equipment in common use and internalising some activities.

Satyaki Raghunath

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Raghunath worked closely with all the aero concessionaires and cargo operators to minimise disruption and provide financial relief to them. The airline marketing team helped launch a historic first route to the U.S. West Coast and the cargo team at BIAL also achieved record numbers over this period, with the airport becoming India’s leading airport for the export of perishables. Despite the impact of COVID-19, Raghunath has led a digital transformation and expansion at BIAL airport, with new initiatives and the deployment of the fully biometric-based self-boarding solution for seamless passenger flow and travel experiences and a process automation and analytics platform. These initiatives amongst many others, meant that the airport won ACI World’s ‘Voice of the Customer’ initiative, which recognised BIAL airports efforts to prioritise their customers during COVID-19. Raghunath has remained a staunch and resilient leader during such an uncertain time and is very much appreciated by his team.

Alicia Prince

As Head of Operations, Alicia Prince has played a critical role in leading and navigating Cairns Airport through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, Prince implemented a functional plan to ensure business continuity and staff welfare, segregating front-line operational staff into work teams to avoid interaction between groups, as well as strict sanitisation processes. She ensured that the $55 million domestic Terminal upgrade continued safely despite the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

She also deployed the COVIDSafe Operation Plan for Cairns Airport, which was endorsed and later commended by Queensland Chief Health Officer. As part of this plan Alicia developed an airport layout to provide physical separation of low risk and high-risk arrivals and initiated increased hygiene and sanitisation protocols. The health and safety of the airport community was paramount to maintaining operations, and in response to this Alicia initiated a COVIDSafe training program for the entire airport community and worked closely with her team to deliver.

As a result of the great work Prince has done to ensure COVID-19 best practices, Cairns Airport was one of the first Australian Airports to be awarded an ACI Global Health Accreditation.

Alicia also led the terminal optimisation project, which assessed and implemented terminal downscales due to the crisis. Significant savings (both financial and environmental) were achieved by reducing the operational footprint of the airport.

Whilst maintaining operations throughout the pandemic was a priority, Alicia ensured her team were kept well informed and engaged. Cairns Airport has a team of 33 volunteers which form part of Alicia’s wider team. To ensure they remained connected and cared for, Alicia and her team created care packages including home-made cakes and personally delivered to each of the volunteers’ houses in a COVIDSafe manner. Alicia demonstrated great leadership throughout the pandemic and continues to do so today. Her clear and transparent communication and collaboration with other Australian Airports and key agencies to ensure best practice and alignment contributed greatly to business continuity. Furthermore, all the above was managed whilst working remotely and juggling home schooling with her two young boys.

Balram Bheodari

Balram Bheodari leads Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as North America’s most efficient airport, due to his vast knowledge of and astute attention to efficiency in aviation, which has allowed the airport to thrive in the most difficult of markets. Bheodari combines operational expertise, integrity, and selflessness to provide a quality of leadership throughout Atlanta Airport. He oversees all facets of airport governance, including operations and a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement programme, ATLNext, designed to pave the way for Atlanta’s growth over the next 20 years. During COVID-19, Bheodari developed a comprehensive resumption of operations playbook that served to support ATL’s recovery efforts. With guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amid evolving health and safety guidelines, Bheodari steadfastly encouraged collaboration among stakeholders, team-building among aviation employees, and adaptability in uncertain times. Throughout the pandemic, he participated in daily calls with Airports Council International and other large-hub airports to share best practices as well as information from Washington, D.C. federal offices and the CDC.

He aimed to restore customer confidence and ensure the airport was a healthy facility using COVID-19 safe protocols. Since, the airport achieved Airport of the Year by the Airport Minority Advisory Council (AMAC).

During the height of the pandemic, Bheodari was the most ardent supporter of our mission-critical employees. Having worked his way up through the ranks, he fully appreciates the oftentimes thankless jobs these employees perform that keep the Airport safe and running optimally at all times. Morale never flagged because Bheodari made sure those employees felt valued through hazard pay, special meals, social media posts, intranet spotlight features, and other incentives.

His actions and his directives all reflect his commitment to the three key focus areas of our organisation’s strategic plan: people, purpose and performance.

Jonas Abrahamsson

Jonas Abrahamsson has shown the strength to steer the company towards its long-term sustainable goals, despite the challenges of COVID-19. Abrahamsson has ensured that Swedavia achieved its net zero target for all ten of the airports in 2020 and has continued to support strategic development and innovation to further the cause of sustainable air travel. During 2020, when passenger numbers where down over 90 per cent and a lot of investments were paused, he decided that investments in the company’s net zero target should proceed, allowing Swedavia to become the first net zero airport group by the end of 2020.

Chris Dinsdale

Chris Dinsdale has worked at Budapest Airport since 2015, originally as CFO until March 2021, where he was nominated for the position as CEO. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dinsdale, as CFO of the airport at the time, fought relentlessly to make sure that the company survived the crisis and worked with great commitment to secure the funding of the airport. For example, a voluntary salary cut for the executives and the founding of the Budapest Airport Foundation, which supports blue collar workers who lost their job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After being nominated to CEO position in March 2021, Dinsdale continues to work closely with the executive team to create a clear COVID-19 recovery strategy for Budapest Airport. This will also mean that we come out stronger of the pandemic and have a clear focus. Dinsdale is an inspiring true leader who helped us all to cope with the very difficult times of the pandemic and I am convinced that he truly deserves this award.

Planning air travel into Singapore during Covid-19 is now easier and more seamless with the launch of the new Safe Travel Concierge (STC) by Changi Airport Group (CAG). This online concierge service lets passengers book their on-arrival Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and check that they have completed all pre-travel requirements at the palm of their hand for a safe and smooth entry into Singapore. Instead of searching different websites to apply for their pre-travel documents, passengers can easily access the information and forms through STC.

Changi travel companion

After registering for an STC account, passengers just need to add their upcoming trips. Depending on their profile and trip details, they will be shown a customised list of pre-travel requirements to complete before flying to Singapore. Besides booking their on-arrival PCR test, passengers can also access services such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s electronic Arrival Card and Health Declaration form through STC. Passengers can also stay updated with the latest Covid-19 news with the portal. Please refer to Annex for a full list of features in STC.

Changi Airport Groups’s Managing Director for Airport Operations Management Mr Jayson Goh said the online concierge service can ease the anxiety of air travel by helping passengers navigate their pre-travel requirements.

Passengers may register for an STC account on safetravel.changiairport.com . Registration is free.

Essential websites and apps for safe travel in Singapore

From scheduling a PCR test at Changi Airport to ensuring a table at your favourite restaurant, these websites and apps will help make travel to Singapore safe and easy

Story By Alexandra Karplus

Published On November 18, 2021 Updated On November 24, 2021

Following the announcement of Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL) and the ever-growing list of eligible countries, many travellers are preparing to (re)visit Singapore . In order to make entering and traveling around the Little Red Dot as easy and enjoyable as possible, we’ve put together a list of websites and apps that will help along the way.

1. Safe Travel Concierge

Developed by a team from Changi Airport, the Safe Travel Concierge aims to make travelling into Singapore as seamless as possible. It serves as a one-stop portal that provides clear guidance on what is needed for each passenger, depending on where you are flying from and the passport or visa that you hold. Signing up for an account only takes a few minutes, after which you can enter all planned trips – you can even add in travel companions to help them manage their requirements. The handy tool then provides a complete checklist of what’s needed. You can use this to book and pay for your arrival Covid-19 test, as it provides a QR code that can be presented at the airport on arrival. Additional information is available to keep you up to date on the Covid-19 situation in Singapore.

2. TraceTogether

The TraceTogether app is required in Singapore in order to enter restaurants, shopping malls and other public spaces. All visitors (as well as residents) above the age of six must have this, so it’s recommended that you download it before arrival. Travellers must register their profile with all of the same details as shown on their passport. Those unable to use mobile devices can rent a TraceTogether Token from the airport . This contact tracing app is used in Singapore to help combat the spread of Covid-19.

3. Car booking services

In addition to ComfortDelGro for taxis, there are several options when it comes to ride hailing apps. As prices tend to vary throughout the day on all of them, it can be useful to download a few to compare prices. Three of the most popular are Grab , Tada and GoJek .

4. Restaurant reservation platforms

With limited dine-in capacity being enforced, getting a table at some of the top restaurants in town can be a challenge. Avoid being disappointed by booking ahead. Sites and apps to guarantee you get a spot at the top restaurants include Chope , Quandoo , eatigo and more. They all offer deals and giveaways, so taking a look at what’s being offered has its benefits.

5. SingaporeAir mobile app

The airline’s app helps to provide a smoother journey. In addition to planning, booking and managing your trip, the app offers a range of features to enhance your travel experience. Passengers can check-in online and generate a mobile boarding pass, as well as receive updates on Covid-19 travel restrictions. An e-Library provides access to over 200 newspapers and magazines from 48 hours before you flight. Passengers can also create a playlist to enjoy while onboard. The inflight menu can be accessed seven days before your flight departs and up until your flight arrives at its destination.

singapore safe travel concierge app

Singapore’s Changi Airport has launched a platform called ‘Safe Travel Concierge’ (STC), a one-stop portal for passengers flying into Singapore, ‘offering personalised pre-travel guidance and Covid-19 test booking.’

What does this mean?

The online concierge service enables passengers to book their on-arrival COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and check if they have completed all pre-travel requirements.

After a traveller has registered for an STC account, he/she will need to add the upcoming trips. Based on their profile and trip details, travellers will be shown a customised list of pre-travel requirements to complete before flying to Singapore.

In addition to booking on-arrival PCR test, passengers can also access services such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s electronic Arrival Card and Health Declaration form through STC.

Additionally, the latest COVID-19 related information will also be available on the portal.

Jayson Goh, Managing Director for Airport Operations Management, Changi Airport, said that the online concierge service can ease the anxiety of air travel by helping passengers navigate their pre-travel requirements. He said:

As we prepare for the reopening of international borders, Changi Airport continues to innovate and leverage technology to ensure a safe and pleasant traveller experience for our passengers. With the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, we first trialed the STC prototype at TravelRevive, the first hybrid tradeshow in Singapore. We are glad to launch it today for all passengers and encourage them to use it for a smoother experience at Changi Airport.

Passengers can register for an STC account on safetravel.changiairport.com . Registration is free. Click here to view the step-by-step guide on the ‘Safe Travel Concierge’ platform.

Has anyone used this portal and can share their experience using it?

Review would be appreciated.

It was launched several months ago (back in April I think). I have used it a few times and it is very easy to use and intuitive. It's the main way to book an on-arrival PCR test, and acts as a good checklist for all the arrival requirements.

Thanks shhayes.

I have created an account, but will have to wait until within 90 days to add my trip to book the on-arrival PCR test.

Very effective, you can save time and you get exact information what you need to travel SG. You can book on arrival PCR test in advance and pay online also.

March 2022.

Also, is it acceptable to just take a taxi straight to your hotel? Then organise the PCR or ART the next day at a test center nearby the hotel?

Good question Melissa. I am waiting the reply from others. And is antigen test given as well in concierge? May be less expensive. Also, does anyone have any idea when this second test on arrival will no longer be necessary??

There is no need to do a PCR test at the airport anymore, you just need to book and do supervised antigen rapid test within 24 hours of arrival, the Safe Travel Concierge has been updated to reflect this change.

>>Also, does anyone have any idea when this second test on arrival will no longer be necessary??<<

As the testing they control is likely to be quite late in the process of relaxing regulations. Likely before dropping vaccination requirements but at the same time or after dropping a preflight test.

Regarding cost, the ART is a set $15 at the Community Testing Centres and Quick Test Centres, so that's pretty cheap. If you go for convenience and do a video test, they will charge you for the privilege.

Facing shifting and complex travel requirements, Changi builds its own COVID information portal

singapore safe travel concierge app

One of the challenges hindering the resumption of international air travel is the lack of a clear and centralised source of information which travellers can rely on, where onerous rules of entering a country often change at short notice due to new Covid-19-related developments, and that such announcements force travellers to either adjust or cancel their plans to accommodate the changes.

To tackle this challenge, Changi Airport has introduced a Covid-19 concierge portal to facilitate entry into Singapore, helping travellers to find the right information and to fulfil the entry requirements.

The Safe Travel Concierge (STC) portal features a checklist of pre-travel requirements which travellers to Singapore must fulfil. Upon signing up for an account via the portal and detailing both their profile and flight details , users will see a customised checklist to be completed prior to departure.

This includes the need to apply for a special pass to enter Singapore , booking and paying for an on-arrival polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, as well as submitting an online arrival card and health declaration to immigration authorities three days prior to arrival.

Changi originally created the portal to allow travellers to pay for their on-arrival Covid-19 PCR test at the onset of the pandemic. A prototype was developed by the airport’s DIVA team — that’s “digital, innovation, ventures and analytics” — and put to trial at an industry trade show, TravelRevive , that was held in Singapore during November 2020, prior to its public release in April 2021.

YouTube video for Safe Travel Concierge: https://youtu.be/Wm00tkshK1k

Lucas Lee, manager of the airport’s development operations team, noted the lack of a single source of information for travellers wishing to enter Singapore as the inspiration behind the portal’s development.

“Researching for information online was challenging and confusing for many passengers, as different countries have different requirements, and they could change from day to day. We wanted to make it easy for incoming travellers to navigate the pre-travel requirements to Singapore,” says Lee.

With the likelihood that the concierge portal will be used for the foreseeable future, Changi states the accounts will be maintained, and travellers will have the option to reuse the portal for their future travels to Singapore.

Brendan Sobie, a Singapore-based independent analyst at Sobie Aviation , tells us that he welcomes the development of such portals or apps, but notes that more needs to be done.

“International travel is very complicated these days as passengers and their airlines have to navigate many regulations and requirements which are often changing at the last second,” says Sobie.

“Any portal or app from an airport, airline or other entity to help facilitate cross border travel is helpful. But what the industry needs more than anything else is consensus and multilateralism. Governments [also] need to come together and agree on items such as digital passports and vaccine recognition.”

To expedite Covid-19 testing at Changi Airport, Singapore’s Ministry of Health is encouraging travellers entering the country by air to register and make pre-payment for their on-arrival PCR test through the concierge portal.

Meanwhile, Sobie stresses the need for governments to quickly adopt digital tools, in order to allow the aviation industry to recover.

“There are many initiatives and products out there to help facilitate international travel but adoption by governments has so far been very slow, which is hindering the ability of the industry to recover,” he says.

Fundamentally, in order for passenger demand to recover, prospective travellers need to be able to understand what the requirements are for entering destination countries from their departure location. If an airport like Changi, which is Singapore’s only international commercial airport (Seletar notwithstanding), feels the need to clarify the situation for its passengers, it would perhaps behoove other actors in the travel space, including governments, tourism authorities, airlines and trade associations, to consider the wider messaging implications of this need.

11 things to know before visiting Singapore

Jaclynn Seah

Mar 9, 2024 • 6 min read

singapore safe travel concierge app

Plan for your trip to Singapore with these things you should know and insider tips © Jakub Zajic / Getty Images

Singapore has a well-cultivated image of being a safe country .

Too safe perhaps for some, who balk at its infamously strict rules and fines for flouting them, and find the gleaming modern city too sanitized for their liking. Others appreciate the clean streets and manicured gardens amidst the tall buildings along with the intriguing mix of people that make up Singapore’s multifaceted culture.

As a Singaporean who’s lived here all her life (and who has always had to explain the country to fellow travelers in foreign hostel common rooms) here’s what you need to know about Singapore, its cultural landscape, and its local customs and quirks, to help you plan your trip to the Little Red Dot.

1. Singapore is small, but with lots to see and do

Compact Singapore takes less than an hour to drive from end to end but there’s a lot packed into this small country. For a first-time visitor, three to four days is usually sufficient to see the main highlights and get a feel of the top things to do in Singapore .

If you’re really short on time, plan a layover with at least 5.5 hours and you can join one of three free transit tours organized by the excellent Changi Airport for a quick taster of what the country has to offer.

Tourists milling around the street of Chinatown in Singapore as the sun beats down; some carry umbrellas to give them shade

2. Pack for the tropics

Practically located on the equator, expect hot tropical weather ranging from 25 to 35ºC (77 to 95ºF) every single day in Singapore. A small umbrella is essential in case of scorching rays or sudden downpours.

What can be tough for those used to temperate climates is Singapore’s high humidity – 60 to 90% on average throughout the year, so be prepared to sweat it out. Pack light materials or bring a small fan or hankie around with you. Anyone basking under the afternoon sun who’s not on the beach is definitely a tourist – be sure to slap on the sunblock!

Funnily enough, it tends to be a lot colder indoors than outdoors because shopping malls and central cooling overcompensate for the heat.

A scarf or a light jacket will keep you warm, offer extra sun protection and are the perfect cover-up if you plan to visit religious buildings.

3. Singapore is an independent country

With a majority Chinese population, some people mistakenly assume that Singapore is a part of China, which is not the case. Most Chinese Singaporeans are descendants of southeastern Chinese immigrants who sailed across the seas decades ago.

Singapore may be hard to spot on a map, but you’ll find it just south of the Malaysian peninsula in Southeast Asia, four hours away from China by plane. On that note, despite its proximity and commonalities in shared culture and history, Singapore is also not a part of Malaysia, though it was very briefly back in 1963 before Singapore became fully independent in 1965, making next year – 2025 – the 60th anniversary of the republic.

4. Most Singaporeans speak excellent English

Singapore is an easy place for Western tourists to explore on their own because of the widespread use of English here. Fun fact: Singapore actually has four official languages: Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu and Tamil represent the three major ethnic groups found here (Chinese, Malay and Indian respectively), and English is the main language used in schools and for business, which also allows for conversation across ethnicities.

5. Natural disasters are unlikely in Singapore

Singapore may not have scenic mountain ranges or awe-inspiring topography, but it’s also out of the path of any major tectonic movement. You are unlikely to face any major natural disasters – no earthquakes, volcanos, typhoons or sandstorms here.

In the worst case, there may be flash floods during particularly rainy periods or haze blanketing the island from forest fires around the region, but these are usually temporary and minor inconveniences.

6. Singapore is a safe and stable place to visit

Singapore is also well-known for its generally stable political and business climate, often ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Strikes that can disrupt travel plans are practically nonexistent here.

The crime rate in Singapore is also relatively low with lots of surveillance and a police force that people trust in. As a single woman, I’ve never been too worried about wandering around Singapore on my own even at night, but do maintain some common sense for your own safety as one of our popular slogans here goes: low crime doesn’t mean no crime.

Asian lady and a mature man enjoy their meal. The lady is laughing at something, while the man is concentrating on his food.

7. Carry both cash and credit cards

How many Singapore dollars you change before your trip largely depends on where you plan to go . Most major tourist attractions and shops in shopping malls will accept credit cards, and other cashless options like contactless payments and smart wallets are also common.

Those planning to take public transport in Singapore can use their credit cards on the public buses and MRT card readers for convenience, but purchasing a local EZ-Link card or transport pass may be more worthwhile depending on how much travel you plan to do. However, do carry some cash around with you as it remains the prevalent method of payment for most small businesses, eating at hawker center stalls, or taking a taxi. Try to break notes of larger denominations ($50/$100) into smaller ones ($2/$5/$10) when possible.

8. Prebook attractions to avoid waiting in line

There’s a joke that a Singaporean’s favorite pastime is to queue for things, but that’s not something you want to waste time on. If there is an option to prebook tickets online or make a reservation, just do it. This is key on busy weekends and peak vacation periods like the mid- and year-end school holidays.

An attraction’s official website is usually the best place to get tickets, but browse other booking platforms before you check out as these sites may offer special seasonal discounts or multi-bundle prices. Also check the Visit Singapore website as it sometimes runs incentive programs for tourists.

Haji Lane in the Kampong Glam quarter, which is famous for its cafes, restaurants and shops.

9. Tipping is not expected

Tipping is not expected in Singapore. If you’re eating out in a restaurant or cafe, there is usually a 10% service charge included in the bill. Some places may have a tip box but otherwise, additional tips are not mandatory or expected, though they are appreciated in the service line.

10. Understand the art of "chope-ing"

If you are eating at food centers or working at co-working spaces, particularly within the central business district, you may notice empty tables with strategically placed items like umbrellas, tissue packets or lanyards on the seats. This is a local practice to "chope" or reserve a seat while everyone is queuing up at the stalls. Most people honor this informal reservation system and will look elsewhere for available seats.

11. Yes, you can drink the tap water

There's no need to buy bottled water in Singapore. The tap water here is treated and perfectly safe to drink. You'll find that most attractions have water coolers where you can refill your reusable bottles while you're out and about during the day.

Is Singapore Safe for Tourists? An Honest Opinion

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click on my affiliate link and purchase something (at no additional cost to you!), I may earn a small commission that helps me keep the blog running. Thank you so much for your support!

Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia. Over 14 million tourists visit Singapore each year, and one of the biggest questions people ask when deciding whether or not to visit Singapore is is Singapore safe?

Singapore is a very modern country. It’s also a very rich country. The government has spent a lot of money building the country up, modernizing it, and making it a desirable tourist destination.

There are also strict law in Singapore. People know that there are harsh punishments for even the smallest and most seemingly innocent of crimes.

This means that the answer to the question is Singapore safe is yes.

Singapore is a very safe country for tourists. It has a good tourism infrastructure, low crime rates, safe roads and public transportation, low risk of natural disasters, and no political unrest.

So, if Singapore has been on your bucket list, and you weren’t quite ready to pull the trigger and book your trip because you weren’t sure if Singapore was safe for tourists, I’m happy to tell you that it is!

However, there are a few things you need to be aware of when travelling in Singapore. Just like any country there are things you need to be aware of when travelling in Singapore and things that could make Singapore less safe than it otherwise is.

I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about safety in Singapore in this article, so you’re aware of what to watch out for and have to stay safe in Singapore as a tourist.

Esims are the best way to access the internet while travelling. My favourite esim Airalo doesn’t currently offer packages for Singapore. Drim Sim is the best esim option for tourists visiting Singapore.

Is Singapore Safe for Tourists?

Just in case you skimmed the first part of this article (I don’t blame you), I want to reiterate that Singapore is a safe country for tourists to visit.

There is very little petty crime, the tourist areas are safe to walk around in both during the day and at night, and the Singaporean people are incredibly kind and welcoming.

It is definitely one of the safest and easiest countries to travel to in Southeast Asia .

Plus I found it to be one of the cooler countries in the region, which was a huge plus. It’s still super hot, but I didn’t feel like I was melting as soon as I walked outside. Surprisingly, it was much cooler than it’s northern neighbour Malaysia . It doesn’t really make sense since they’re less than an hour drive apart, but, again, I’m not complaining about a less intense climate.

Overall, the answer to the question is Singapore safe is yes absolutely it is safe!

Is Singapore Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

I’m a solo female traveller, so I feel extra qualified to speak about this next point.

I never once felt unsafe during my solo trip to Singapore. Even when I was walking around at night, which is saying a lot because I hate being out at night.

Yes I’m a woman in my 30s who is still afraid of the dark. Haha.

I never felt unsafe using the metro, walking around, or being in the underground walkways/malls, which are another place I tend to feel on edge.

Singapore is rated as one of the safest countries in the world. I think that since it’s so safe and easy to travel in, Singapore is a great place for people wanting to take their first solo trip.

It’s similar to Dubai where there is low crime rates, easy transportation, English is widely spoken, and it doesn’t feel too different or “exotic”. You’re able to get your feet wet and learn how to travel alone without being too overwhelmed.

Things nobody tells you about travelling alone

Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Is Singapore Safe for LBGTQIA+ Travellers?

The Singapore government doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to LBGTQIA+ rights. In late 2022, they decriminalized same-sex relations, but same-sex marriage is still illegal in the country.

Even though the government doesn’t have the best stance towards the LBGTQIA+ community, that isn’t reflected in the community.

Hotels gladly accept same-sex couples, and the community in general is accepting of same-sex couples.

That being said, PDA isn’t a big thing in Singapore. Even between heterosexual couples.

Small signs of affection like holding hands for a brief period of time or a very quick kiss are becoming more acceptable and common in Singapore.

It isn’t common to see large displays of affection or constant contact between couples in Singapore. Affection tends to be something that’s done behind closed doors and in private in Singapore.

Even non-consensual hugging is a “soft crime” in Singapore.

So, while it may be socially acceptable to be in a same-sex relationship in Singapore, it isn’t common for anybody to show affection in public. The reason you get weird looks in public may not be because of your relationship but because you’re showing affection in public.

So, while the law may not be on your side, Singapore is still a friendly place for LBGTQIA+ travellers. You shouldn’t face discrimination when checking into your hotel or if you’re out and about with your partner.

Is Singapore Safe for Family Travellers?

Yes! Singapore is absolutely safe for family travellers. It is one of the cleanest and most modern cities in the world.

It’s safe for children to walk around and take the metro. The streets are wide and not super busy with pedestrians, so there isn’t much of a chance of them wandering off in a crowd if they’re younger.

The one thing that parents need to watch out for is dehydration.

Singapore is hot. You need to drink more water than you normally do and make sure you spend time indoors in the air conditioning when possible. You especially need to watch out for dehydration in your children if you’re doing outdoor activities like visiting Universal Studios , taking a boat ride , or visiting the observation deck at Marina Bay.

You’ll get hot and dehydrated really quickly doing those activities. Children don’t always know how to recognize when they’re dehydrated so be sure to check with them more often than you normally do and have lots of water on hand. Carrying a fan also comes in handy.

Another way to help beat the heat is by taking a hop on hop off bus tour . Lots of them have a covered portion on the top that make them cooler, and there is always air conditioning on the bottom level.

A bus tour is a great way to see the city without having to rely on the metro or walking around in the heat to get place to place.

But other than the heat, there isn’t anything that parents need to be overly aware of or cautious of when visiting Singapore. Use normal precaution and keep a close eye on your children, and the answer to the question is Singapore safe for family travellers will be yes!

PS- Try to arrive at the airport early, so you can visit the Jewel. It’s a crowd pleaser (especially with children), and it shouldn’t be missed on your visit to Singapore! You can buy your tickets online in advance to save money and time!

Is Singapore Safe for BIPOC Travellers?

I’m not a BIPOC traveller, but I spoke to a lot of BIPOC travellers about their experiences in Singapore before writing this post.

Overwhelmingly, nearly everybody I spoke to agreed that they felt safe when travelling in Singapore.

Singapore is a multicultural country. There are three main ethnicities in Singapore: Malay, Indian, and Chinese. People are used to diversity.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t people with prejudices though.

No matter where you are in the world, unfortunately, there are racist, and Singapore is no exception.

A few people I spoke to mentioned being stared at occasionally and sometimes feeling unwelcome or uncomfortable. Nobody said that it went beyond feeling uncomfortable. Nobody was confronted and nobody was physically harmed.

Overall, the experience in Singapore was a positive one, and everybody said they would recommend it to other BIPOC travellers.

So, the answer to the question is Singapore safe for BIPOC travellers is yes. You shouldn’t face any physical or verbal abuse, but you may get a few stares, unfortunately.

Is Singapore Safe at Night?

You might be wondering is Singapore safe at night? Most places in the world tend to get a bit shadier at night, but that isn’t the case in Singapore.

Singapore comes alive at night. Between the Hawker centres and the night shows at Gardens by the Bay and Marina Sands , there is an endless supply of things to do in Singapore at night.

It’s also cooler at night than during the day. Locals tend to come out and spend time outside during the evenings after work and when it’s a more agreeable temperature.

There is a lot to see and do at night. Most people only spend a day or two in Singapore. The best way to see everything that Singapore has to offer at night is by taking the night bus tour .

It’s three hours long and makes multiple stops throughout the city, so you can experience Singapore’s vibrant nighttime culture. It’s also a great way to learn about the city.

Plus if you’re a solo traveller or family traveller that doesn’t want to be exploring alone at night or wrangling children around at night, the night bus tour is super helpful.

Plus you’ll be tired at the end of the day after all the walking and sightseeing, so it’s nice to sit down and be guided through the city for a few hours.

Anyways, I’m getting off topic now.

Singapore is one of the few cities in the world that I’ve felt completely safe and comfortable walking around at night as a solo female traveller. The other cities are Seoul , Kaohsiung , and Kuala Lumpur .

So, the answer to the question is Singapore safe at night is yes. And that’s coming from somebody who hates the dark and being outside, so you can trust my opinion.

The night bus tour sells out quickly so be sure to buy your tickets in advance.

Most Common Scams in Singapore

Unlike many other popular tourist destinations like Paris , there aren’t many scams in Singapore you need to be on the lookout for. Even petty crime isn’t too common in Singapore.

That being said, there are a few things I want to bring to your attention. They’re pretty common scams all over the world, so if you’ve done any travelling before, you’re probably aware of these scams.

These scams aren’t all that common or terribly serious (except for the last one), and they don’t change the answer to the question is Singapore safe from yes to no.

For a major country and tourist hub, they have some of the lowest crime rates and scams.

Taxi’s Overcharging

This is a scam in basically every country in the world. It’s not terribly common in Singapore but always make sure the taxi meter is running. Singapore is having a shortage of taxi drivers right now, so it can be hard to find a taxi to drive you where you need to go. Most people use Grab anyways, and that’s what I recommend you use. Just be sure to download the app and input your credit card information while you’re in your home country. You’ll run into major issues if you try to create a Grab account when you arrive in Southeast Asia .

The Picture Scam

This is a very common scam in Italy and has started showing up in Singapore as well. Someone will offer to take your photograph for a smell fee. It seems reasonable until they take 30 photographs and then charge you the small fee for each photo. If someone comes up to you and offers to take your photo for a fee, just politely say no thank you.

The ATM Helper

This is the most serious scam in Singapore you need to be aware of. If you’re taking money out of an ATM in Singapore and someone offers to help you get money out without you being charged a bank fee, leave immediately and find a different ATM. They’re actually trying to steal your banking information from you. Most places in Singapore accept credit cards, but if you do need to take cash out, it’s best to use an ATM at a bank instead of a free standing ATM.

Singapore Safety Tips

There isn’t too much you need to know to stay safe in Singapore, but I’m going to share a few Singapore safety tips with you anyways!

Stay Hydrated

Singapore is hot. It’s not as hot as other places in Southeast Asia (like Thailand ), but it’s still extremely hot. You’ll be surprised at how much water you drink while in Singapore.

Even if you’re not walking outside too much because you’re taking the metro or a bus tour , you’re still going to be sweating a lot.

There are tons of places to buy water throughout Singapore so make sure you’re popping into a convenience store a couple times a day to purchase a water.

They also have fresh squeezed orange juice machines out and about in popular areas. I highly recommend you try at least one orange juice. I don’t like orange juice, but I was obsessed with it. It’s so fresh and delicious. Plus it’s only slightly more expensive than a bottle of water, so why wouldn’t you get a fresh orange juice instead?

Gardens by the Bay Waterfall

Don’t Chew Gum

I think the one thing that most people know about Singapore is that gum is forbidden. You can’t buy it in Singapore, and you’re not allowed to bring it into the country.

There are actually fines if you’re caught chewing gum. As a tourist, you may be given a warning and told not to, but you could also be charged a fine anywhere between $500 and $1,000.

That’s a lot of money for something as simple as chewing gum. It can put a real damper on your holiday.

So, leave your gum at home and get used to using mints if you need to freshen your breath while you’re out and about in public.

Don’t Litter

Similar to not chewing gum, littering is a big no no in Singapore. Frankly, it’s a big no no everywhere in the world, and you should never litter.

There aren’t a ton of public trash bins in Singapore, so you need to be prepared. Most people carry a small plastic bag in their purse that they can use for any trash they may acquire while out and about during the day. Then they discard it when they find a trash can.

It’s not always fun carrying around a small bag to put your trash in, and it’s not terribly practical for people who don’t carry purses with them.

Most of the time if you’re buying street food, there will be a trash can near the seller. Stick around until you’re done eating your food, and stick your trash in there.

Shopping malls and metro stations also tend to have a couple public trash bins you can use.

The most likely item you’ll be carrying around is a water bottle. At least they’re easy to carry in your hand or stick into your pocket.

Just be prepared to not stumble across a trash can while you’re walking around.

Carry Your Passport

I’m always surprised by the number of people who tell me that they leave their passport in the hotel when they go out for the day.

I always take my passport with me whenever I travel. You never know when you’ll need it.

Sometimes you can save money on attraction tickets if you show your passport. You’ll need it if you are in a situation where you have to call the police or go to a hospital. And in some countries (like China or Turkey ), a police officer can stop and ask you at any time to prove you entered the country legally.

You never know when you’ll need your passport so be sure to take it with you whenever you leave your hotel.

I know some people are worried about losing their passport when they travel. I like to put it into the inside zipper pocket in my purse. There is no way a pick pocket would be able to steal it.

It’s a little more complicated to store it if you don’t carry a bag with you. You can put it in your pocket between your wallet and phone to keep it safe from pick pockets as well.

The Importance of Internet Safety

I can’t talk to you about the safety of Singapore without reminding you that it’s so important that you remember to be internet safe as well.

You rely on public wifi as a traveller. Even if you use an esim , you’ll still be using public wifi when you scroll the internet at your hotel. Using public wifi puts you at a high risk of having your private online information stolen.

Even if the wifi network has a password, that doesn’t mean you’re safe. There are countless people who have the password and can access the same internet as you do. All it takes is one person with bad intentions, and your online information is compromised.

Trust me when I say you do not want to be dealing with the headache of having your banking information stolen while you’re abroad just because you didn’t protect your online safety. It’s a headache that I don’t wish on anybody.

The only way you can be safe while using public wifi is by installing a VPN on your devices. It essentially puts a forcefield around your devices that makes it impossible for prying eyes to access your personal online information.

A VPN makes using public wifi just as safe as using your home wifi where you’re the only person who knows the password.

It’s one of the simplest and easiest ways you can ensure you’re safe while travelling.

Nord VPN

My Favourite VPN

I’ve used a lot of different VPNs over my many years of travel. Honestly, most of them are awful.

VPNs are notorious for slowing down your internet speed, and you can really feel it with most VPN providers.

I’ve had many instances where I turned off my VPN and put my online data at risk just because I got frustrated with how slow the VPN was making my internet.

All that changed when I started using NordVPN . It’s the fastest VPN on the market, and I’ve never noticed a lag in my internet speed when using it. I’ve been using it for almost five years at this point, and I have no plans of switching to a different VPN provider.

You can protect up to six devices with a single NordVPN subscription, so you can protect all your devices for one low price. One account to rule them all as Gollum would say.

The best part is how affordable NordVPN is. A two-year subscription costs less per month than a single Starbuck’s latte. That’s a super small price to pay to keep your private online information safe while travelling.

I always say that if you can afford to travel, you can afford to protect yourself with a VPN.

My Top Singapore Travel Tip

I couldn’t let you leave without sharing what I think is the most important Singapore travel tip.

Buying tickets online for attractions through Klook will save you time and money.

I think a lot of people assume that if you’re buying tickets through a third-party like Klook that you’re being charged more, but that isn’t the case.

Every single attraction and activity I wanted to do in Singapore I bought tickets in advance through Klook.

There were long lines at Gardens by the Bay , but since I bought my tickets online in advance, I just skipped the line to buy tickets and went into the line to have my ticket scanned. I also paid less for my ticket than I would have if I bought it at Gardens by the Bay directly.

For the night bus tour I took, it was essential to purchase tickets in advance. The tour sells out almost every night. Showing up to the departure point and trying to buy tickets the same day as the tour likely won’t work.

Klook is primarily an Asian brand so not a lot of people who live outside Asia know about it. A lot of my friends I told about Klook were confused about whether it was legit or not because the prices are so affordable.

If you haven’t heard of Klook and are weary, don’t be. It’s a very legit company. I’ve used it dozens of times and have recommended it to everybody I know who travels to Asia. All the tickets and tours on Klook are legit, and their customer service team can help you if you run into any issues.

The other thing I love about Klook is that you pay in your home currency. That means you save money on the exchange rate and conversion fees applied by your bank if you were to purchase the tickets with your card at the attraction itself.

Trust me when I say that if you’re not using Klook to purchase your Singapore tickets, you’re wasting time and money!

I hope this helped answer the question is Singapore safe?

By every metric, Singapore is safe. It’s an easy country to travel in, has lots of interesting things to do, and travellers don’t face discrimination based on skin colour or sexual orientation.

I think Singapore is a great introductory country to Southeast Asia. It is cooler than most other countries in the region and doesn’t have as much hustle and bustle.

If it’s your first time to the region, starting in Singapore then branching out to Thailand , Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. is a great option.

But no matter where you’re travels take you, Singapore is a great option and a very safe place to travel.

It’s one of my mom’s favourite countries in the world, so it has to be worth a visit right?

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
