Time Out says

A spine-tingling treat with Tudor spirits and creepy corridors

Most historic sites require a fair amount of imagination to fill the gaps between a few artefacts and famous events long gone. But at Hampton Court Palace you can stand in the very rooms where Henry VIII eyed up the ladies, where Charles I was kept prisoner and where Georgian royals feuded like a German ‘EastEnders’ plotline.

It would be a waste, then, to only visit the palace by day, when there are 500 years of nighttime tales to be told, too. And standing on a chilly night in a dark courtyard, our two tour guides, Mr Packer and Mr Lax, relish every second of their storytelling duties.

They’re attired like Victorian gents, their patter perfectly pitched. Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, Messrs Packer and Lax have a knack for recounting unexplained incidents in a manner that makes you start to question what’s really lurking in the shadows. Our small group trails through cobbled alleyways, into the kitchens and along the colonnades. You have to mind your step in the dim lighting and there’s no dawdling between this key spot and that notorious corner.

On the way up to the royal apartments we pause on the stairs where Jane Seymour’s ghost is said to appear, passing from the room in which she gave birth to Prince Edward (and died 12 days later) and the apartments where her baby was nursed. It’s this mix of historic fact and legend that make the tour truly engaging. By the time we’re walking along the Haunted Gallery where the doomed Catherine Howard was dragged screaming, with just a few tiny tealights and the creaking floorboards for company, most of us have found a stranger to link arms with. You know, just in case.

The Ghost Tours (minimum age 15) run on selected dates through the dark, winter months and get booked up long in advance, but they are an absolute treat. There are even Family Ghost Tours aimed at eight- to 14-year-olds and accompanying adults – your kids will never watch ‘Scooby-Doo’ again.

Historic Royal Palaces announce 500 Years of Fear: Ghost Tours at Hampton Court Palace

hampton court ghost tour tickets

As the nights draw in and the winter months quickly approach, there is one particular day that sends chills up the spines of the most sceptic of people…. Halloween.

When night falls on Hampton Court Palace this Halloween, the ghoulish Ghost Tours begin.

When night falls on Hampton Court Palace this Halloween, the ghoulish Ghost Tours begin.

The HRP team at Hampton Court Palace are all set to unearth 500 years worth of spooky stories and haunted happenings in the idyllic former royal residence and you are cordially invited to join them. When does it all begin I hear you ask? Well obviously it has to be the 31st October, the scariest day of the year!

The team at Hampton Court Palace will be putting on after hours spine-chilling Ghost Tours that not only conjure up supernatural stories from five centuries of royal tragedy and drama but will also enthral visitors with countless tales of spooky sightings from across the centuries.

Visitors will be accompanied around the palace by the State Apartment Warders, who hold the palace’s most mysterious and spine-tingling secrets. The Warders advise that visitors keep an eye out for the spirit of Jane Seymour in Clock Court but also implore you to visit the site of a mysterious shallow grave that was uncovered in the 1870s- only if you dare!

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after both royal residences and former royal residences including Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, the Banqueting House and Kew Palace. HRP raises all of its own funds through visitors, members, donations and sponsor. With the exception of Hillsborough Castle, the palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation and HRP mange them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

As mentioned the first of Hampton Court’s Ghost Tours takes place on Halloween, 31st October, at 6:30pm though the team will also be putting on an extra special and extra spooky late night tour on the same night. It is said that the late night tour will delve even further in to the most gruesome and ghoulish tales of past residents as well as taking in routes of the palace that are usually never seen by visitors. Brilliantly put by the team at Hampton Court Palace:

From empty former Grace and Favour apartments to disused stairwells, where will you find yourself when the lock strikes twelve?

The remainder of the family and adult Ghost Tours will continue sporadically from November 2015 until February 2016. The family tours will offer visitors all the spookiness of an adult tour but tailored for a family audience.

Tickets for the adult tours are priced at £27.50 though for the special late night tour on Halloween are priced at £35, a glass of champagne on arrival is also included. Family tour tickets are priced £14 for adults and £7 for children.

So this Halloween, why not get yourself down to Hampton Court Palace as the team and their past residents are sure to put on a spooky show for you though the HRP team do advise you to wrap up warm as they guarantee shivers whatever the weather!

T our guiding for those who love history

Frequently asked questions, how long are your tours.

As it will be your tour it's really up to you, but the minimum booking I take is for Hampton Court is 1 ½ hours. I can give you a shorter tour, but it would be charged as 1 ½ hours. Next step us is 2 ½ hours, then 3½ hours or you can book a full day. The palace is very large and complicated, trust me 1 ½ hours is a whistle stop tour. The Trafalgar Square tour is ¾ of an hour to 1 hour.

What does "a tour" include, and not include? As part of the booking I will liaise with you about meeting up and can give you advice on travel to Hampton Court, parking etc.as well as just what you want from the tour.  I live very locally and will be in place to meet you at least 15 minutes before time. A 2 ½ hour or longer tour will include refreshment stops that won't come out of your tour time. Your entry to Hampton Court Palace is not included in my fee and every member of your party will need either a ticket or HRP membership .

I'm an hrp member, do i get a discount.

Oh, go on then, seeing as it's you. See the Tours page for details.

How many people can come on a tour ?

I can take tour groups of up to 20 people in Hampton Court. My limit for tours in public spaces like Trafalgar Square and Hampton Court village is 10. If you have a group that's just over my limits do get in touch, and we'll see what we can do, as always, it costs nothing to ask.

Can I book you to do a tour in costume ?

I have done tours and other work in costume in the past, but at the moment I only have full morning dress (tail coat, 'salt and pepper' trousers, shirt, tie etc.) which I wear in my capacity as Warden of the Chapel Royal and also for some tours. If you have an event which you think a costumed presence would enhance then get in touch and I can put you in touch with some excellent folk.

Are the tours accessible for people with mobility issues?

Hampton Court Palace has almost total level access and the warders take great pride in making sure people can see everything. Do make me aware of any needs when booking and I will make sure we use the most appropriate route and liaise with the staff to ensure as smooth a journey as possible, from parking to departure. Do bear in mind that Hampton Court is very large and old, even a short tour covers a lot of ground and some cobbles can't be avoided.

Do you do BSL tours?

Sadly my fingers are much less nimble than my tongue, so I'm afraid not. HRP have excellent qualified BSL guide lecturers that you can book via the HRP website ,

I have a Very Important client who wants a tour, can you be trusted?

All of my guests are important, but yes, I am used to taking tours for VIPs and working with close protection teams when called for. I have done tours for A list celebs, senior diplomatic, military, religious and political figures as well as royalty. I pay attention to correct forms of address and respect but I'm not overawed by fame or status. You may notice the only actual name I drop in this site is the late, dear Joan Rivers , partly because she was fabulous , but also because she is, tragically, no longer with us. You and your clients can expect the same discretion.

I'd really like a ghost tour, or a roof tour, or a ghost tour on the roof ?

As an official palace guide I can take roof tours, however, I cannot take private bookings. Roof tours must be booked via the HRP Contact Centre, if you'd like me to be the guide let them know when you make the booking. .

Although Hampton Court is one of the most haunted buildings in England, and one or two ghost stories will usually (ok, pretty much always) find their way into a daytime tour, I'm not willing to do daytime ghost tours as such, apologies, it just doesn't work. As of Spring 2022 it's not clear if the public night time ghost tours that ran each winter up to 2019 will come back. It is possible to book a private night time ghost tour (with me if you ask for me) at any time in the year. See the HRP website for details.

Are you a blue badge guide?

I am not Blue Badge guide, I am a White Badge guide, qualified with the Institute for Tourist Guiding, the body which is also responsible for the Blue Badge guides. The difference is one of scope. I am qualified to the same level but only for Hampton Court Palace. A blue badge guide is qualified for a whole region. If you want someone to show you Hampton Court  and Windsor Castle in the morning with Stonehenge and Bath after lunch you need a Blue Badge Guide. If you want to have a more intimate, exclusive Hampton Court experience, I'm your man.

I have some historical research for you. What will it cost?

That all depends on what sort of research you have in mind, it costs nothing to ask. So get in touch and I will do a preliminary consultation for free. If I think I can help we can negotiate a suitable fee.

This royal palace offers a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of the Tudor monarchs with its stunning architecture, opulent rooms and gardens. Imagine sitting at a banquet in the Great Hall with its hammer-beam ceiling and tapestries woven with silver and gold thread. It’s safe to say Henry VIII wanted to impress.

Step into the kitchens to see where the feasts were prepared and wander through the State Apartments, the Royal Chapel and look out for the ghost of Catherine Howard in the Haunted Gallery. There are collections for visitors to enjoy and keep an eye out for different exhibitions throughout the year.

Head outside to explore Hampton Court’s gardens. Walk among fountains and step into different areas including the Rose Garden, Kitchen Garden, Privy Garden and Pond Gardens. Find the Great Vine that’s over 250 years old and the world-famous maze will keep visitors of all ages entertained.
