And when filming The Outsiders , he decided to remove the cap that covered the crack. The result was purposefully unattractive, as Cruise meant to emulate his dirt-poor greaser character. And though The Outsiders was Cruise’s third movie, the 1983 film marked the first noticeable showcase for his unique mouth.

Naturally, then, when Cruise lost his baby tooth the teeth around it would slide in toward that space… resulting in a midline that’s shifted roughly half-a-tooth toward the left.

And it’s not so uncommon — roughly 3% of the population has a missing tooth.

But since Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise, the obvious next question is… Why doesn’t he get it fixed? The man has an estimated net worth of $600 million! But those options would require another, a longer period of more intense braces.

Tom Cruise’s Adult Braces

Open-coiled springs are one option. The small springs could be wedged into the braces, around the missing premolar, to slowly open up space for a dental implant to be added. In all, the process would take around two years. And two years as a metal mouth is a lot for a man who’s bringing in hundreds of millions at the box office — at age 59!

Tom Cruise's Teeth Are His Hallmark — Facts about the Actor's Middle Tooth and Smile Makeover

Iconic actor Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks, which earned him the reputation of a Hollywood sex symbol. However, his teeth have had to go through years of modification to match his almost perfect good looks.

Apart from starring in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters over the last three decades — including "Top Gun" and the "Mission Impossible" franchises — Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks and his nearly perfect smile.

However, fans cannot help but notice that beneath Cruise's 100-watt grin, there is a glaring imperfection — a slightly out of place tooth that has undergone modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S TEETH BEFORE

As a newcomer in the movie world, the young Tom Cruise's teeth were badly discolored and very unaligned. By closely inspecting some of the actor's pictures, it can be seen that his teeth are not symmetrical with the center of his face.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles.

Additionally, the veteran actor's dentition features a right front tooth that is slightly askew from others. Interestingly, the front tooth has earned some fame through the years and has been dubbed the "middle tooth" by the media.

In an industry that can be described at best as "vain," and overly conscious of physical appearance, Cruise has carried on confidently with his less-than-perfect smile — even flashing it for the cameras every now and then.

Popular Los Angeles dentist Dr. William Dorfman understood the special focus on looks in Hollywood and was famous in the 90s for helping actors get their teeth in line. While speaking on Cruise's teeth, Dorfman said:

"They're terrible. His two front teeth are different sizes. They looked so bad when he was on the cover of last November's GQ that I wrote him a letter saying he should come see me."

Well, it seems Cruise must have paid a visit to the famous dentist because his teeth have undergone some modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S DENTAL TRANSFORMATION

During his early years as an actor, Cruise initially fixed his dental issues by undergoing teeth whitening and alignment procedures. The whitening helped the talented actor deal with his discolored teeth.

In 2002, after his split from his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Cruise got braces to reconfigure his misaligned teeth. The braces were nearly invisible, and at the time, his publicist Pat Kingsley revealed the 57-year-old actor would be wearing the orthodontic device for a year.

By 2012, Cruise's teeth had undergone a complete transformation, and the actor showed off his improved dentition at the premiere of "Rock of Ages," and at a charity event in December that year.

Despite the improvements, eagle-eyed fans were still able to notice that aside from his famous "middle tooth," his left incisor looked bigger than his right one.

More recently, the actor's teeth appear to be nearly perfect, much to his fans' admiration. While Cruise has never explained what he did to his teeth, many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers in addition to getting braces.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles. From Lindsay Lohan's gnarly grin to Johnny Depp's mysterious red tooth and Anna Paquin's gap-tooth, these stars pose a hefty challenge for every dentist.

How Tom Cruise Got His Teeth Done 

Being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Tom Cruise is no stranger to rumours and controversies.

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been at the centre of it from time and time again. Known for his dashingly good looks and versatility as an actor, the megastar is still flying high even as he approaches his 60s. 

Even though the Top Gun star’s looks have changed dramatically throughout the years, it’s his teeth that are always left people with a lot of questions.

So, let’s find out what’s really going on with them. 

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in 1962 in New York and later took on the stage name Tom Cruise.

Since his father was a part of the Canadian Armed Forces, he grew up in Canada, where his interest in acting was first cultivated.

Dubbed “Hollywood’s last real movie star,” he is the stuff of legends.

He’s been gracing the big screen since the 80s, smashing out one hit after another, not letting any of his personal life drama or even his age deter him.

Despite being on top of his game, he has managed to stay elusive, not accounting for the display of some “bizarre” moments here and there.

It was at the age of 18 that he seriously started to pursue acting, for which he first went to New York and then Los Angeles (LA) – synonymous with Hollywood itself. 

Tom Cruise’s Professional Career

Tom got his first role in Brooke Shields’ Endless Love as Billy. However, he went on to play more prominent roles in Taps and The Outsiders . But it was his breakout role in Top Gun that got everyone’s attention.

From there on, it was an upward trajectory for the action star, who went out to star in the critically acclaimed Rain Man, Risky Business, The Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire , and Magnolia , among many others.  

He has also been a part of some of the biggest movie franchises, the most successful of them being Mission Impossible , in which he has done many life-endangering stunts as his character Ethan Hunt.

While Mission Impossible 8 is still in the works, he recently starred in part 2 of the cult classic Top Gun . 

It goes without saying that this Hollywood A-lister is one of the highest-paid and highest-grossing actors of all time.

He has also won Golden Globes and received nominations for the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards. More recently, he was given an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival 2022. 

Does Tom Cruise Have A Tooth Gap?

From a very young age, Tom Cruise’s teeth weren’t exactly “Hollywood dazzling.” They were misaligned and chipped with a pronounced overbite . However, before making his way to Hollywood, he got some dental work done.

We know that was the case because reportedly, he removed the “cap” (another name for dental crown ) from one of his front teeth (probably the one on the right) to add to his character of Steve Randle in The Outsiders . 

It is believed that his teeth were badly damaged as a result of a sports injury involving a hockey puck. The actor did play hockey when he was young, so it’s possible that he knocked his teeth out as a result of that. 

A missing tooth on the left side of his upper jaw is also the reason why he has the “middle tooth.” His teeth have shifted to the left, which is why his dental midline is also to the left.

This is actually something that happens when people are missing their teeth. The surrounding teeth shift into the space left behind, which can make them misaligned and crooked.

There are also some other stories about Tom Cruise’s teeth. One involves the former editor-in-chief of The New York Post, Col Allan. Apparently, Tom Cruise’s front teeth fell out when he was having drinks with the journalist. 

Allan recounts being “speechless” because of the incident.

At that time, Cruise told Allan that he had lost his teeth after one of his children’s heels struck them while he was playing with them. While the actor had reportedly “pleaded” that the information not be made public, that, unfortunately, is not the case anymore.  

How Did Tom Cruise Fix His Teeth?

It is believed that the Mission Impossible star had crowns on his teeth. However, it is possible for people to get both crowns and veneers at the same time.

What will suit them better will depend on the condition of their teeth, their location and the severity of their problem. But veneers can also effectively hide the teeth, although it only covers their front surface. 

Other than that, Tom Cruise may also have had a teeth whitening procedure.

Despite him having a “unitooth” and not the traditionally “perfect” teeth, there are many people who admire his million-dollar smile.

And the reason why it dazzles so maybe teeth whitening treatments. 

Keep in mind that dental restorations like crowns and veneers cannot be whitened. You have to take care of your teeth.

And for them to not look too white and stand out from the rest, many people get teeth whitening procedures done. 

Did Tom Cruise Have Teeth Surgery?

Tom Cruise’s teeth have undergone a variety of changes during the course of his career. As mentioned before, he had dental crowns at the time of The Outsiders .

Dental crowns usually last for 10-15 years, so he would have needed them replaced. Other than that, his wearing braces at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report is the most widely circulated evidence of him getting dental work done.

He had ceramic braces at the time since they blend in more with the natural teeth.

From his pictures, you can see that the brackets on his teeth are transparent. Although there’s something else to see if you closely look at his photos from that time: his gums. They appear even. 

However, if you look at the photos of Tom Cruise’s teeth now, the gum tissue on his left central incisor is more than that on his right central incisor.

The size of the tooth has also changed. The right tooth is bigger than the left one. 

It is possible that the actor had a crown lengthening or gingivectomy procedure in later years.

Some people need these before getting dental crowns. Gingivectomy treatment involves the removal of gum tissue above the tooth so that more of its structure is exposed.

This provides a greater surface area to the crown for bonding and anchorage. It may be the reason why his gum line is not even anymore and why the size of his one tooth is now bigger than before. 

Does Tom Cruise Have T eeth Veneers?

It’s more likely that Tom Cruise has dental crowns instead of veneers. That’s because, unlike crowns, veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth.

And considering how damaged his tooth was, Tom Cruise’s dentist might have also recommended him a crown to protect the underlying tooth (provided it’s still there).

Tom Cruise’s veneers wouldn’t have been able to do that as effectively. Although if he did get veneers, Tom Cruise’s veneer teeth would have looked just as natural (not considering the misalignment).

Has Tom Cruise Ever Said Anything About His Teeth?

Tom Cruise remains elusive to this day. The actor hasn’t confirmed or denied anything about his teeth.

We only know that he had work done from his pictures and the fact that he very publicly got braces at the age of 40.

There are many rumours about the Minority Report star that he hasn’t ever said anything about. 

Despite being in the spotlight for more than 40 years, there isn’t much that people know about him. There was a time when people thought that he had a rhinoplasty or nose job.

However, in an interview with Playboy Magazine, he made it clear that it wasn’t the case and “never would” be. 

Did Tom Cruise Seek the Right Dental Procedures?

As mentioned before, Tom Cruise does have a million-dollar smile. His dentists would have tried their best to make what they could out of his situation.

It may not have been possible for him to undergo more invasive and extensive procedures because of the time constraints his career put on him. He has constantly been in the spotlight since the 80s. 

That said, the actor’s midline could have been better if he had had an implant after he had lost his tooth.

The implants would have acted as a substitute for the natural tooth and not allowed the surrounding teeth to shift. Plus, dental implants Turkey would cost him a little.

With a crown placed on top of the titanium screw, Tom Cruise’s smile teeth would have looked even more glamorous since his midline would have been at the centre of his face.

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been the subject of much debate and discussion by his fans. His teeth certainly deviate from the Hollywood norm. However, looking back at his photos, you can see that from a very young age, Tom Cruise’s teeth alignment was not normal. 

Of course, that would have been a problem once he started appearing in big movies, so he got his teeth fixed through cosmetic restorations like crowns or veneers or both.

Still, Tom Cruise’s dental midline (the parting line between the two front teeth) is shifted to the left. This has been the case from the very beginning and remains so to this day.

His dentists would have tried their best to do what they could with his teeth in a short amount of time, and his smile does look great.

Tom Cruise’s Teeth

His teeth were first brought to the public’s attention when he played Steve Randle in 1983’s  The Outsiders . To add to his role as Steve, a young Cruise volunteered to have the cap removed from a front tooth that had previously been chipped as a result of an accident playing hockey, according to this  article .

By the time Risky Business and the 1986 classic, Top Gun came around, his teeth were notably straighter, but the story of Tom Cruise’s teeth did not end in the 1980s!

In 2002, he famously sported fixed braces to the premier of his film ‘Minority Report’, embedding in our psyche that adults can wear braces too. It is reported that a mixture of clear aligners and fixed ceramic braces were used as part of his treatment during this time.

When Tom Cruise emerged in Hollywood in the '80s , he quickly became not only one of the industry's most prominent leading men but also one of the decade's most recognizable sex symbols. Apparently, Cruise took that status very seriously. Even before breaking through with 1983's "Risky Business," Cruise had always been rather conscious of how he looked in front of the camera, his old agent Eileen Berlin told the Daily Mail in February 2022. "Tommy had many faces — you see it in the photos," the retired executive said.

According to Berlin, with whom Cruise lived when he was starting out at 18, Cruise relentlessly prepared before photo sessions, in an effort to emphasize what he considered to be his strongest features. "We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror," she described. While he knew he was handsome, Cruise was self-conscious about his height . "He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit," she said.

Cruise has reportedly gone to great lengths to conceal his 5 foot, 7 inch stature, often making producers apply different techniques to make him appear as tall as his co-stars, according to Refinery29 . In light of Cruise's perceived vanity, rumors about plastic surgery and other corrective procedures has followed him throughout his career. That even includes Cruise's smile, with many contending his grin has changed over the years.

Everyone has an opinion about Tom Cruise's front teeth

Tom Cruise's smile was a big part of the boyish charm that made him so popular in the '80s and '90s. But his wasn't what most would call a perfect smile. As seen in the photo above, Cruise's front teeth aren't aligned with the center of his face, giving the impression Cruise has a "mono-tooth," as  Metro described. "The mid point between his two central upper teeth (the dental midline) did not match the midline of his face, giving him the appearance of a single prominent front tooth," said Dr. Asif Chatoo of  The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic .

Some believe the trait was less pronounced in his early career , leading experts to conjecture that Cruise has undergone upper jaw surgery, Showbiz Cheat Sheet noted. Additionally, the perceived changes in color and texture of Cruise's teeth has given way to theories he has used porcelain veneers, according to Life & Style magazine. Others have also suggested he has whitened his teeth, but, honestly, who in showbiz hasn't? It was Hollywood that popularized the practice to begin with, U.K. clinic St. Peter's Lodge  noted.

But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. "My mouth wasn't closing properly," he said (via  Time ).

Tom Cruise inspired cosmetic surgery rumors as recently as 2021

Tom Cruise's looks drew unwanted public attention in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game, Page Six reported. The "Mission Impossible" star's face looked swollen, leading many to wonder whether Cruise had had cosmetics procedures done or gained weight. Social media users took to Twitter to mock his appearance, drawing comparisons to Norm MacDonald, who had recently died . "Norm macdonald being reincarnated into tom cruise is one of his best bits ever," one wrote .

However, many others defended Cruise while criticizing the normalization of online body-shaming. "I had hoped people learnt to not comment on men's bodies after mocking Zac Efron for gaining weight and supposedly being 'ugly,' despite knowing his history of eating disorders, addiction and body image struggles," one user tweeted . "Leave Tom Cruise and his face alone. People are allowed to change."

But because Cruise had been spotted over the summer with his so-called normal face and it seemingly returned to what fans were used to shortly after, experts hypothesized the swelling could've been caused by cosmetics treatments. "Tom definitely looks swollen and puffy, which could be due to filler, post procedure swelling or weight gain," a practitioner told The U.S. Sun . Some social media users had an issue with this type of coverage, which seemed to disregard the possibility Cruise's swelling could be due to medical reasons. "He looks like he's on prednisone to me," a Twitter user pointed out, referring to the commonly prescribed corticosteroid.

Tom Cruise’s Signature Smile Didn't Come Easy: He Had to Overcome Several Dental Flaws

Iconic Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has looks to die for - a stunning face and a charming smile, but the actor has overcome a major dental flaw to flaunt his now perfect smile.

The Middle Tooth 

Cruise is undeniably one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors, but his good looks and contagious smile is another reason he rules the hearts of millions.

However, there is a story behind his picture-perfect smile. The actor spent years to find the right dental solution for the front tooth, perhaps popularly known as the  “middle tooth.”  

Many fans have noticed that his front right tooth is a bit out of place. In fact, if you have a closer look at his old movies and portraits, the pictures speak for themselves.

In 2001, just after his breakup with Nicole Kidman, the  Mission Impossible  star got braces to address an overbite and dental misalignment.

Cruise proudly flaunted his  invisible braces  with ceramic brackets while walking the red carpet of  Minority Repor t Premiere’ in 2002. The artist’s then publicist Pat Kingsley revealed Cruise would wear an orthodontic device for a year. 

Even before that, during the shooting of  The Outsiders  (1983), where he played the role of Steve Randle, the then 21-year-old Cruise removed the cap from one of the front teeth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match. 

The Dental Imperfection Never Shook His Confidence

Despite the dental flaw, the 58-year-old never lacked conviction. During his initial days as a Hollywood hero, Cruise mentioned why he happily embraced his newly found sex symbol status.

In a 1985 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he explained that the tag neither bothered him, nor did he particularly like it.

It doesn’t bother me at all. I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.

The Transformation 

The maverick actor started his career in 1982 with his genetically gifted looks and not-so-perfect smile. According to reports, he initially opted for teeth whitening for his discoloration and alignment procedures. 

When he appeared at a public event in 2010 with the completely transformed look, people went head over heels for him. After completing over twenty-five years in the industry, he aced the fresh look. 

By 2012, the actor had undergone a complete  dental modification.  At the 2012 premiere of  Rock of Ages , Cruise looked ever so handsome with his newly improved dentition and a fresh haircut. Later in December that year, the actor was also seen at a charity event. 

However, the  Mission Impossible  star never opened up about his dental transformation. Many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers apart from braces.  Some dentists also suggested that Cruise might have an implant-supported ceramic crown in the area where he lost his tooth.   

At 58, Cruise remains a fan-favorite, and the actor is known for his realistic acting skills, fantastic persona, and charismatic looks.

Cruise is generally the ultimate movie star and an action cinema icon. He’s been acting for over 40 years and has a varied filmography that is probably unmatched in any movie industry.

Cruise is one of the highest-paid actors of all time and that’s for good reason. That is because the superstar is also one of the highest-grossing box office superstars in history. His film has grossed over $11.5 bn worldwide, and as a result, he’s climbed the ranks to become one of the most influential actors in Hollywood.

The four-time Academy Awards nominee has shattered a number of box-office records over the course of his career. However, the biggest one came through his last movie – Top Gun Maverick. Tom Cruise’s teeth in the Outsiders is among the most memorable aspects of his character Steve Randle, a cocky member of ‘The Curtis Gang’ – a prominent group that is featured throughout the course of the movie.

Randle works at a gas station and has a speciality in fixing up cars. But it’s something about Cruise’s teeth in the movie which somehow managed to make him a perfect fit for this ‘greasy’ character.

While the character hardly brandishes a smile in the movie, his weird behaviour does result in his real 3 front teeth being shown to the audience. Normally, not a lot of people have three frontal teeth – but Cruise did at a point in time.

The teeth are clearly misaligned and one would want the character to visit the dentist to get his jawline fixed. There has been a lot of debate about whether Cruise’s teeth in this film were fake or real. Considering the number of prosthetics often used in Hollywood movies, there is little telling what is real and what indeed is fake.

Fans Still Can’t Get Over Tom Cruise’s Teeth in The Outsiders after 40 Years

There has been a lot of noise over Tom Cruise’s teeth over the course of his career. But early in his career, Cruise had naturally misaligned teeth because of an accident suffered when being hit by a hockey puck. With The Outsiders just being his third movie, Cruise’s early teeth can be seen in all their glory in this one.

To make his character look more authentic and ‘streetwise’, a young Cruise voluntarily took off a cap on his front teeth which were chipped. That is exactly why his character’s teeth look so asymmetrical and not normal at all.

There is a clear gap in the off-center part of his front tooth and his 3 front teeth are in pretty bad shape. Steve has some over-the-top dialogues in the film which Cruise pulls off brilliantly, while his teeth are also noticeable when he’s just looking smugly at someone.

With the film set to celebrate its 40 th anniversary of release on 25 th March, some of its biggest fans appear to be ‘celebrating’ it in their own way by reminiscing about Cruise’s 3 front teeth and weird appearance.

Some fans have used it as a joke for their own misery, while some are simply haunted by how weird he looks in that film as a 20-year-old. It’s probably safe to say that the Hollywood actor has come a long way in his career after breaking through in the industry after this film.

Did Tom Cruise get his teeth fixed after The Outsiders?

Tom Cruise clearly understood that he wouldn’t really be able to go far into his career in Hollywood with a chipped tooth or cover it up using a cap for long. So, after gaining stardom in the movie industry and some decent money for himself, the actor quickly got his teeth fixed.

He probably spent a bit of a fortune on his dental realignment, fixing all his misaligned teeth and getting his 3 front teeth fixed as well. He even took his time in doing so. During the red carpet of his hit 2002 movie ‘Minority Report’, Cruise turned up to the premiere wearing braces to hold his teeth together in an aligned shape.

While most would relate braces to be worn by teenagers, Cruise had to do it because his teeth were causing him major problems. He joked about it on the David Letterman show once, saying: “I couldn’t close my mouth properly for years, so they (dentists) finally said, ‘please, shut your mouth.’”

Considering that his smile became a thing that made his biggest fans twirl, his decision to properly fix up his teeth was a very good decision.

There could be a Before and After comparison done between what his teeth condition was in The Outsiders compared to how it is now, or even during the peak of his career. The Mission Impossible star, who is known for pulling off death-defying stunts for the movie and even getting badly injured at times, seems to have preserved his teeth after his childhood incident.

Tom Cruise Flashes His Abs While Scaling the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles

Tom Cruise appears to have found a new iconic location to pull off his famous stuntwork.

On Saturday, Cruise, 61, was seen with a film crew at the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills as the Top Gun: Maverick star scaled the famed landmark.

The actor wore an all-black t-shirt, pants and shoes for the shoot and at one point flashed his abs from underneath his shirt. Largely thanks to his long-running Mission: Impossible series, Cruise has become synonymous with the dangerous stunts seen in the action-packed films.

A representative for Cruise did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. It's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday.

Cruise last appeared onscreen in Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which brought back his character Ethan Hunt for a seventh entry in the long-running Mission: Impossible series. The movie made $172 million at the domestic box office and also received two nominations at the recent 96th Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

A title for the eighth film in the series has not yet been announced.

Cruise also has several other projects in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed that he will star in the next movie from filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu ( The Revenant, Birdman ), and The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that Top Gun 3 is in development at Paramount, with Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski in talks to direct a follow-up to 2022's highest-grossing movie.

The actor has also been planning to film a movie in outer space for a number of years now as part of a project first announced by NASA back  in 2020. Doug Liman, the filmmaker with whom Cruise made 2014's  Edge of Tomorrow  and 2017's  American Made , is directing that movie . Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley shared in a 2022 BBC news interview that Cruise plans to become the " first civilian to do a space walk outside of the [International] Space Station " as part of the untitled film.

“We’ve been working on it diligently,” Cruise told Variety in July 2023, when asked for an update on the project. “We’ll see where we go.”
