1 – Saunter around Inner Harbor

Inner Harbor, Victoria, British Columbia

In fact, it’s a story that dates back to long before the city was even founded!

Originally, the bay was used by the First Nations tribes that lived in the area, who traded their various goods and services along the waterways.

By the mid-1800s, it was front and center in the city’s booming trade scene, with European immigrants setting up bustling trades for everything from furs to gold.

And now, it’s a thriving hub for tourists and locals, with the Victoria Pier anchoring the scene with its humming shops and street artists – and of course, there are still plenty of boats bobbing in the water!

Bookworms will find plenty of reasons to fill their luggage too – after all, it isn’t every day that you get to explore Canada’s largest selection of used books!

This bonanza of words comes courtesy of Russell Books , a massive space that still manages to feel welcoming and cozy.

Since this branch opened in 1991, it has quickly become a temple of knowledge and community, where you can score amazing bargains, discover hidden gems, and browse through an incredible assortment of older offerings.

And like any good bookstore, the sense of community here is just as prized as the volumes on the shelves; with a steady lineup of public events and acclaimed authors reading their latest works, this place really puts its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting the written word!

And when you’ve pilfered all the pages you can manage, you can head out to explore more of Fort Street, which is packed with other antique shops and temples of oddities.

Indulge in some Italian at Il Terrazzo Ristorante , where a candlelight dinner might include lamb chops or spaghetti.

Or get a taste of France at Brasserie L’ecole , home to duck confit, chicken liver, and all sorts of other delicacies.

Sample seafood, tapas, and farm-to-table meals at Aura Waterfront Restaurant + Patio , which also offers perfect views of the Inner Harbor to enjoy.

And when you’re ready to try a spot with a great atmosphere and tastes to match, head to Little Jumbo for fine meals such as flat iron steak and pork belly, plus a famously excellent cocktail menu.

50- Make the rounds (and buy some) as you indulge in the city’s nightlife

nightlife in Victoria, BC

And finally, you can cap off all of that exploring, gaming, eating, and drinking with a wild night out to remember!

Just like the other parts of the city’s cultural scene, the offerings here are so varied that you can tailor your own adventure; just be prepared to stay up late and get a little decadent!

While The Mint is technically a restaurant, its lively cocktails (with several of them featuring creative uses of its namesake herb) and fabulous DJ sets also make it a great party spot as well.

And for LGBTQ-friendly hotspots, head to Paparazzi Nightclub, which offers up a nice social club feel with its pool tables and karaoke sessions.

Irish Times Pub is perfect if you want a classic watering hole experience, with beers flowing on tap and live music encouraging all sorts of impromptu singalongs.

A similar vibe – this time in Scottish form – can be found at Bard & Banker , complete with 320 varieties of whiskey and beer… and as an added bonus, your servers just might serve up your selection while wearing traditional kilts!

Finally, at the Garrick’s Head Pub , you can enjoy a laid-back and deeply pleasant experience full of good food, good drinks, and great friends, plus a long and storied history that’s worth the trip in its own right; according to legend, your drinking buddies might just include a few ghosts!

Where to stay in Victoria, British Columbia?

The Empress has some pretty good company when it comes to awesome places to stay!

If you’re looking for a quiet kid-free getaway, Abigail’s Hotel will provide you with a cozy hideaway, complete with a fabulous lounge area perfect for reading, catching a film, or playing a couple of games with some newfound friends.

Or head to Oswego Hotel to get pampered in cosmopolitan style, with the harbor and the downtown area right outside, and a great restaurant and stylish designs to welcome you home later in the day.

And at Strathcona Hotel , you can enjoy a stay that feels more like a summer camp, complete with darts, billiards, and even a sand volleyball court on the roof!

Where to go next?

As phenomenal as this town is, there are so many other fun things to do in British Columbia that you’ll want to keep exploring!

Famed for its natural beauty interspersed with some truly delightful cities, this is a province that rewards the daring sightseer and the cerebral traveler in equal measure… although there are plenty of relaxing options as well!

If you’re into winter sports, you’ll find heaps of things to do in Whistler, BC , which has long been one of the most coveted skiing spots on Earth; but it’s also a lovely little spot to enjoy some mountain sports, hip galleries, and even a spa or two.

And if you prefer the big-city angle, there are also lots of things to do in Vancouver , the biggest city in the province, where fantastic museums and neighborhoods bursting with charm rub elbows with vast public parks, sporting events, and views for days.

But there’s also lots to see as you move through the rest of the country!

In Alberta, you can try all the things to do in Jasper and things to do in Banff , two sparkling little towns with welcoming outdoorsy vibes and gorgeous resorts, plus some jaw-droppingly beautiful national parks as their backyards.

You will also find many fun things to do in Calgary , a town that has plenty of top-notch sporting events, works of art, and shopping areas, yet never forgets its country roots… after all, this is the home of the famous Calgary Stampede!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg (sometimes literally) in terms of the best places to visit in Canada , where fossil beds, seasides, quirky towns, and Arctic-adjacent hamlets offer a great incentive to keep on traveling and learning, coast to coast, north to south, and everywhere in between!

But why stop at Canada? Just a short ferry ride or drive away lies the buzzing metropolis of Seattle in the United States. This gem will perfectly complement your Pacific Northwest journey. Famous for its iconic Space Needle, vibrant arts scene, and aromatic coffee houses, there’s a myriad of fun things to do in Seattle .

Final Thoughts

A little bit of elegance, a lot of scenery, and an unforgettable charm that’s been cultivated through years of preservation and revitalization… this is the legacy that unfolds on the streets and in the woods here, and it’s one well worth exploring at length.

And now that you know what some of the coolest things to do in Victoria, British Columbia are, it’s time to check out the whole beautiful, welcoming smorgasbord for yourself!

The Spice Girls told Mel B to “Stop” spilling the beans.

Melanie Brown admitted she has been kicked out of the girl group’s WhatsApp chat for gabbing about a potential reunion tour celebrating their 30th anniversary.

“I heard you got kicked out of the WhatsApp group?” ITV presenter Alison Hammond asked Brown on the Britain’s “This Morning” Thursday

Mel B

“That always happens to me,” the singer, 48, responded, “because I say things.

“You know, I get so excited when it comes to Spice Girls, because it is 30 years. And, you know, we’ve got a lot to celebrate — the fact that we’re all still healthy and living life and all talking still.”

She added, “It’s nice, so I can’t say anything else to get myself kicked out!”

The Spice Girls, which formed in 1994, consisted of Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Brown (Scary Spice).

The group had a string of hits like “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life” that made them global sensations, selling over 100 million albums before disbanding in 2000.

They briefly reunited in 2007 for a tour and again in 2012 to perform at the London Olympics.

“We are wanting to do something, and we are, but I can’t really tell you because I’ll get kicked out of the WhatsApp group again,” Brown said on “The Jonathan Ross Show” last month.

“I have to be really careful. We’re definitely doing something. I’m probably going to get told off! I’m in trouble now.”

However, Beckham, 49, threw cold water on the tour speculation earlier this week.

The Spice Girls.

“We do have a group chat. I do speak to all the girls,” the fashion designer said during an interview on Radio France .

“It would be lovely for us to do something to celebrate — a dinner or a lunch — and reminisce, but, yes, it will not be any more than that.”

Beckham also confirmed that she has no desire to hit the stage again and is now focused on her fashion and beauty lines.

“I’m so proud of what I achieved with the Spice Girls that now, for me, it’s about empowering people through fashion and beauty,” she shared.

“There have been lots of rumors about tours and performances, but that will not happen. But I’d love to celebrate with the girls in another way, just me and them.”

Brown is currently promoting her memoir, “Brutally Honest.”

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Is Here, and It’s Much More Than Country

The superstar’s new LP is a 27-track tour of popular music with a Beatles cover, cameos by Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, and features from Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

  • Share full article

A woman in a cowboy hat and elaborately bejeweled jacket brings one hand to her chest and smiles in sunglasses.

By Ben Sisario

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it.

For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. There was the “disco” cowboy hat at her Renaissance World Tour last year, and her “ western ” look at the Grammys in February, complete with a white Stetson and black studded jacket. Then, on the night of the Super Bowl, she released two new songs, and sent one of them, “Texas Hold ’Em” — with plucked banjos and lines about Texas and hoedowns — to country radio stations, sparking an industrywide debate about the defensive moat that has long surrounded Nashville’s musical institutions.

At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Dolly Parton provides a cameo introduction to Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene,” Parton’s 1972 classic about a woman confronting a romantic rival. Willie Nelson pops in twice as a grizzled D.J., who says he “turns you on to some real good [expletive],” including snippets of Chuck Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the blues singer Son House.

Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. Beyoncé does a version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and, on the track “Ya Ya,” draws from Nancy Sinatra and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” “Desert Eagle” is glistening funk, and the upbeat “Bodyguard” would not be out of place on a modern rock radio station. The album’s range suggests a broad essay on contemporary pop music, and on the nature of genre itself.

That theory is made clear on the partly spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell , who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? Yes, they are,” Martell, 82, says. “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined.”

Of course, Beyoncé herself indicated this a week ago when she posted a note on Instagram saying: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

Still, the theme of simultaneously celebrating and transforming country music extends to the album’s cover art, featuring Beyoncé seated sideways on a white horse, dressed in red-white-and-blue rodeo gear and hoisting an American flag.

Guests on the album include Miley Cyrus on the song “II Most Wanted,” and Post Malone on “Levii’s Jeans.” (The extra I’s underscore that “Cowboy Carter” is officially “Act II” of what Beyoncé has said will be a three-album cycle, which began with “Renaissance” in 2022. That motif repeats throughout the album’s 27-song track list. The Beatles cover — where she is joined by a quartet of young Black female country singers — Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy — is rendered as “Blackbiird.”) Midway through the track “Daughter,” Beyoncé even flexes some opera skills, singing a bit of “Caro Mio Ben,” a popular 18th-century Italian aria. ( More on that here .)

In a statement, Beyoncé described the sonic texture of the album, differentiating it from the synthesized process behind most contemporary pop albums (including her own).

“With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones,” she said. “I didn’t want some layers of instruments like strings, especially guitars, and organs perfectly in tune. I kept some songs raw and leaned into folk.”

As with “Renaissance,” the audio for “Cowboy Carter” was leaked online shortly before its planned release, with some fans urging others not to listen early.

Back when Beyoncé released her self-titled “visual album” without warning in 2013, establishing the “surprise drop” as an industry trope, it was partly meant to protect the album from leaks, which had become a threat to first-week sales numbers. For these last two albums, Beyoncé has embraced a more conventional marketing plan, announcing her album weeks ahead of time and preparing deluxe physical editions. (There are many for “Cowboy Carter,” including LPs in, yes, red, white and blue vinyl.)

In the end, the leaks meant little to “Renaissance,” which went straight to No. 1 . And, regardless of the new album’s fate at country radio — where “Texas Hold ’Em” has so far made it only as high as No. 33 — the commercial potential for “Cowboy Carter” seems vast, given Beyoncé’s recent success.

Last year, she won her 32nd Grammy Award , more than any artist in history. Her Renaissance tour sold $580 million in tickets, second only to Taylor Swift. A related concert film, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” offered a rare look behind the scenes of her creative process and was a hit in cinemas.

Last week, as the release of “Cowboy Carter” neared, Beyoncé wrote on Instagram that the album was “over five years in the making,” and that “it was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” Fans zeroed in on her appearance at the Country Music Association Awards in 2016, where she performed her song “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks, and drew backlash online .

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” Beyoncé said. The new album, she added, “is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of an earlier Beyoncé song. It is “Daddy Lessons,” not “Daddy Issues.”

Universal Studios Hollywood reissues iconic Glamor Trams as world-renowned Studio Tour celebrates a ... [+] milestone 60 years.

Universal Studios Hollywood will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic Studio Tour in style. Details of the landmark experiential event, which will run from Friday, April 26, 2024, through Sunday, August 11, 2024, have finally been revealed and include the return of the legendary fan favorite, the Runaway Train.

"The Studio Tour paved the way for the development of Universal Studios Hollywood, and celebrating its 60-year milestone pays homage to its indelible impact," said Scott Strobl, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Hollywood. "The Studio Tour is a crown jewel in our theme park portfolio and a beloved attraction for millions of guests. We are thrilled and honored to share our enthusiasm for its historical relevance with guests both new to the experience and those who have journeyed with us along the way."

Over 200 million guests have the experienced the Studio Tour since it started in 1964. Back then, five times a day, Monday through Friday, people got a peek inside the world of moviemaking by riding one of the red and white Glamor Trams.

This year, as part of the celebration, tourists and locals will have a chance to relive that experience as several of the iconic candy-striped Studio Tour centerpiece vehicles return to the backlot roads, taking guests behind the scenes at the working studio.

Anyone taking part in the Studio Tour will also have the chance to step off the tram they're riding and onto the legendary Bates Motel set from Psycho , where an original, fully restored 1964 vintage Glamor Tram will be situated. There will also be a range of other photo ops, including the theme park's original hanging Jaws shark and a huge King Kong backdrop.

Not only that, but few tourists hit Los Angeles without intending to grab a selfie with the Hollywood Sign, which is celebrating its centennial this year. As part of Universal Studios Hollywood's milestone commemoration, the Studio Tour event will also debut what is believed to be the first ever original replica of the Sign. It'll be located adjacent to the tram step off.

While the original Hollywood Sign is 45 feet tall, this official replica will stand at 10 feet. Still, it has been "meticulously crafted from the Sign's historical records" to recreate the landmark faithfully. The actual sign, installed in 1923 as a billboard for a real estate development called Hollywoodland and now one of the world's best-known monuments, is heavily protected and inaccessible by the general public.

"The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is thrilled that this incredible opportunity will enable guests to step off the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood and enjoy an up close look at a perfectly scaled replica of the Hollywood Sign," said Steve Nissen, CEO and President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. "It has been a dream of millions to climb the hillside to the actual sign atop Mount Lee, so this collaboration with Universal Studios Hollywood is the ideal way to inspire guests around the world to dream big."

The Studio Tour summer event has several additional highlights to shake things up. Among them is a top-to-bottom renovation of the legacy Earthquake - The Big One attraction, which returns with state-of-the-art technology and aesthetics. Exclusively accessed as part of the tour, it has allowed guests to experience an 8.3 magnitude quake since opening in 1989.

Fans of the Oscar-winning multimillion-dollar Back to the Future franchise will be delighted to see Courthouse Square, where key scenes were filmed. There, they'll find an original time machine picture car with Doc Brown not far away. Elsewhere, fans of the Jurassic Park series, one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, having grossed over $6 billion at the worldwide box office, will also get to see a massive, growling Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur display used to promote the Jurassic World movie.

Fans with memories that go back further who like to keep it really old school will be particularly happy to hear that the 1976 Runaway Train will be back as part of the celebration. It will be stationary but the beloved bells and sirens will be back. Screens on the tram will also show clips of other former Studio Tour attractions as they once appeared on the tour.

Once the tour, which also includes the standard Jaws , Fast & Furious: Supercharged and King Kong: 360 3-D and War of the Worlds set components, has been experienced, guests will also be able to continue the cinematic celebration in the theme park with a plethora of themed food and drink as well as a special Dining Pass. Of course, there will also be an all-new dedicated Studio Tour 60th anniversary merchandise collection, which boasts everything from popcorn buckets to pillows and clothing to candy.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Eleventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov came out strong against top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday night and went on to win 6-2, 6-4 in the Miami Open quarterfinals, his first victory over a top-five player in nearly five years.

Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, who beat unseeded Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-5, will play Dimitrov in the semifinals Friday. Second-seeded Jannik Sinner will face No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal, a rematch of last year’s final that Medvedev won .

Dimitrov said he didn’t want to evaluate the quality of his play against Alcaraz “since I have to play again tomorrow. I’m trying to stay on point. This is how our sport is. You appreciate it, of course. You’re very happy with the current win. Then you have to quickly move on and start focusing on the next match.”

Alcaraz, the 2022 champion, entered this tournament off a victory over Medvedev at Indian Wells. But the world’s second-ranked player had trouble finding his game against Dimitrov and became visibly frustrated numerous times in the first set.

But Alcaraz didn’t go away even after falling behind a break at 4-2 in the second set. He broke Dimitrov at love and then held serve to even the set at 4-4. Dimitrov, though, won the final two games, breaking Alcaraz in the clincher.

(AP Photo/Tim Heitman, File)

Alacaraz said Dimitrov played “almost perfect.”

“I have a lot of frustrations right now because he made me feel like I’m 13 years old,” the 20-year-old Alcaraz said. “It was crazy. I was talking to my team saying that I don’t know what I have to do. I don’t know his weakness. I don’t know anything.”

This was Dimitrov’s first victory over a top-five player since he beat then-No. 3 Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of the 2019 U.S. Open.

On the women’s side, fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina once again had to go three sets, pushed to the edge before beating No. 27 Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (2) in the semifinals.

Rybakina, ranked fourth on the WTA Tour, will on Saturday face unseeded Danielle Collins, who defeated No. 14 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-2. Rybakina also made last year’s final, losing in straight sets to Petra Kvitová.

“This year, it’s much different,” Rybakina said. “I was not expecting, honestly, to be in the final because I was not prepared that well for this tournament, but really happy that I managed to battle through all these matches and be in the final again.”

A day off will likely be welcome for Rybakina, who has been pushed to three sets in all but one match this tournament. Thursday’s match lasted 2 hours, 33 minutes, and she told the Tennis Channel that for the first time in her career, she has rested on the days between matches during a tournament.

“In the beginning, these long matches were helping me to get back in shape,” Rybakina said. “Now I’m not in shape just because I’m tired of all these long matches, but overall, it was really successful tournament no matter how I do in the final.”

Rybakina appeared to take control when she broke Azarenka’s serve to take a 3-2 lead in the third set. Azarenka fought off four break points before hitting a two-handed backhand into the net to give Rybakina the game.

It was quite a response from the second set when Azarenka lost only two points on her serve, and one came on a double fault.

But Azarenka wasn’t done. With Rybakina serving for the match, Azarenka broke back to even the final set at 5-5. Both players then held serve to send the match to a tiebreaker, which belonged to Rybakina, who went up 6-1. She wrapped up the victory with a cross-court forehand.

Rybakina is seeking her third title this year. She is 4-0 in her career against Azarenka, including two victories this year.

Azarenka, 34, was attempting to become the tournament’s oldest winner. She became the second-oldest semifinalist; 36-year-old Venus Williams made the semis in 2017.
