Dodge Journey: How to Reset Stereo System

Many car owners/drivers use the radio or stereo system while they drive. Sometimes the stereo system has problems and needs to be reset. Below are directions for resetting the stereo system on a Dodge Journey.

Note:  Doing this will erase any saved radio stations or paired phones. You will need to reset the stations and pair phones again when starting the car.

If neither of these options fixes the issue, please take your car to a certified mechanic or dealership.

2011 – 2020 Models

  • Open the passenger side door. The fuse box is under the dash near the door.
  • Press the  tab  and pull down.

Dodge Journey Radio Stopped Working: Causes + How to Fix

Dodge Journey Stereo Not Working

Has the radio in your Dodge Journey stopped working?  If so, there are three common causes for this issue .  They are a blown fuse, loose or corroded wiring, and a problem with the radio itself.

If your radio comes on but isn’t working, this article will cover that too: Please jump to the section that’s applicable to your vehicle.

Dodge Journey Radio Not Working

Table of Contents:

Radio Won’t Work At All Causes

The radio is on but no sound, common questions.

The most common reason for a radio to stop working in a car is a blown fuse.

This section covers a Dodge Journey’s radio would show no signs of life. If your radio is lighting up, but no sound is coming from the speakers, head down to the next section.

Cause 1: Blown Fuse

Dodge Journey Radio Won't Work at All

Always start with the simplest and easiest potential cause first, which is the radio fuse. You’ll need to check the fuse box to see if the radio fuse is blown.

How to Test a Fuse

Step 1 : You’ll need to your Dodge Journey’s fuse box location .  On most makes and models, it’s to the left of the driver’s seat (when you are behind the steering wheel).

Step 2 : Once you access your vehicle’s fuse box, you’ll need to locate the radio fuse . You should see a schematic printed on the door.

Step 3 : Test the fuse .  There are two ways to do this. First, you can visually inspect your Journey’s radio fuse.  There’s a wire between the two prongs.  If the connecting filament is damaged, power can’t reach the head unit, and the fuse needs to be replaced.

A better way to verify a fuse is functioning is to use a test light . This can be accomplished without even pulling a fuse.  Here’s how:

2011 dodge journey no sound from speakers

Start by finding a good ground source on your Journey to ground the test light to. You can usually find one inside the door jam that will reach the fuse box.

Next, turn the key to the accessory position, and touch the test light tip to both prongs.

If it only lights up for one prong, the fuse has failed, and you’ll need to replace it. If both sides light up, the fuse is fine.

Cause 2: Wiring Issue

2011 dodge journey no sound from speakers

If your Journey’s radio fuse checks out, it’s time to determine if there’s a problem with the wiring harness going to the radio system.

Verify that your vehicle’s radio has a solid ground connection.  Use a multimeter to verify the voltage level is accurate.  Any issue with the wiring harness will prevent power from getting to the radio system and cause the fuse to blow again.

Cause 3: The Radio Itself

If there’s power going to your Journey’s radio, and you’ve verified that the ground connection is good and it has power, the only way to get your car working is to repair or replace it.

Cause 1: Broken Antenna

When the tuner is on, there will be static. The CD player or Aux input should still work fine .

A broken antenna is one of the most common issues that cause your Journey’s radio to stop working.  Antennas are reliable,  but they can weaken and eventually break entirely over time, mainly if you frequently utilize drive-through car washes.

If you suspect this might be the problem, check to see if your vehicle’s antenna is in good working condition (is it bolted on?). If it isn’t, then you should replace it.

Cause 2: Anti-Theft Mode

If your vehicle’s stereo is coming on and says to “input radio code, ” you’ll need to find.  Most vehicles come with a card where the number is recorded or written inside the glove box on a sticker. Sometimes it’s printed on the back of the owner’s manual.

Some manufacturers will let you look it up online if you need the code.  If that doesn’t work, you can take it to the dealer and have them pull it. Here are all the ways you can look up your Journey’s radio code.

Cause 3: CD Player or Aux Button Has Been Touched

If your Journey has a CD player or aux button and it was recently touched, then your radio may be stuck in that mode.

You can test this by attempting to connect another device, such as an iPod, to the car’s audio system. If it works, then there is likely an issue with the radio itself.

In this case, you should take your Journey to a professional for repair or replacement.

Does the radio stop working when you crash?

No, your Dodge Journey’s radio should not stop working when you are in a car accident. If it does, then there may be an issue with the wiring or the radio itself (wiring short, blown fuse, no power, and ground connection).

You can check to see if any of the fuses in your vehicle have blown, and if they haven’t, then you should look for loose or corroded wiring in your electrical system.

One of my Dodge Journey’s speakers isn’t working.

The speaker could be blown.  But, you’d likely hear a static sound from the speaker.  It’s more likely to be caused by a damaged speaker wire.

If one of your Journey’s door speakers isn’t working, the most common location of the short will be where the harness enters the door (since it moves).

Sounds like a common issue that has been happening on the2011 Dodge Journey's. It is covered under warranty and is advised you do not try to fic it yourself. You may void the warranty trying to fix it yourself.

No Sound From Speakers..help!?

  • Add to quote

I have a 04 with the 7 speaker infinity. I've been running a pioneer h/u with the correct wiring harness to turn the factory amp on and also running a amp and sub combo. Everything was working fine, been working fine for a year now, until today. Now i only have sound coming out of my subwoofer and a ticking noise every 2 or 3 seconds out of the speakers on the dash. Did some diagnosing and pretty sure its the stock infinity amp. I even installed my stock radio back in and it still no sound out of the speakers except for that annoying ticking. For now i pulled the fuse for the radio amp so i can drive in peace lol..common problem for these amps? expensive to replace, or should i just run wires directly to speakers from back of aftermarket headunit?

bigmac18

I can't really help with the current problem. But if it turns out that it is the Infinity amp. i would not waste the time or money replacing it. Either run the door speakers straight off the aftermarket deck or throw in an aftermarket amp for them.

weedahoe

I agree, either find a small amp or wire them to the back of the Pioneer HU and move on. But if you want to keep the sub and all speakers, you will need at least two separate amps or a 5.1 amp

how much power from the puioneer? The story goes and someone could back me up, is if your new head unit puts out say 50 watts per channel and the oem radio does 25 w. the oem amp would not be able to handle the extra input power thus burning it out, not sure why the sub works, unless it was wired directly to new head. I see the oem amp as the failed unit.

sub works cause it has its own amp and is wired to rca's seperate in the back of the head..figured as much..where's the stock amp located? I'll just disconnect and run wires up to the headunit from there hopefully.

And it is NOT worth pulling everything apart to get to it IMO. I left mine were it was and bypassed everything

wouldnt it be easier to take the wires that go from the speakers to the factory amp right at the amp to the deck instead of running wires to each door ?

Suddenly no sound from speakers?

  • Add to quote

So today the sound cut out from all my speakers. The head unit (8.4an) works perfectly fine except there's zero audio output regardless of how much I dick around with it. Any tips on how to fix it? I should note I have the upgraded alpine system. Thanks!

bigbody

Dumb question but does all the functions work other than no sound or is it completely frozen? You could try holding both buttons in and it should reset, if not then there may possibly be a fuse for the factory amp.

Ya everything functions fine, i can navigate all the menus, adjust the volume, you name it... Just no sound lol. Which two buttons should I hold in together?

The mute button and the browse/enter button, push them both in and hold them and it will reset, may not do anything since you are able to use all the functions but worth a try

Do you get any sound from the navigation system? You can adjust the navigation sound when you are getting instructions by using the steering wheel volume up control. The sound comes only through the left front speaker. I am sure you have the mute off and a radio input selected. Greg

Hi there. Did your radio volume get resolved? If so, how? I just bought a brand new 2013 Lamarie and when I picked up the truck the volume does not work? The dealer is not sure what it could be at this point. I am very disappointed with the truck being brand new off the lot. Any suggestions?

did you look around for a fuse? sounds like a fuse issue.

Jhouse

I have a 12 so i know the radio is diferent but this just happened to me too. I disconnected the- on the battery for a minute the hooked it back up and it worked fine

Has anyone figured this out?

I just had this problem with 2011 Laramie... lift the backseat to the AMP...do not lift the amp cover. Find the amp power line to the grey fuse box thingy on the side of the wall under the seat. Unplug, wait 2 seconds and plug back together. You can opt to disconnect the truck battery first (im lazy and did not). Start the truck back up and you should have volume again from the radio, Bluetooth and backup sensor. QUOTE="BadRamrod, post: 2225231, member: 179759"] Having the same problem in a 2011. The Uconnect on my Ram 1500 Laramie Hemi has no sound coming out from the speakers.. Everything seems to be working except there's no sound coming out.. The problem actually started when the Bluetooth on my Uconnect wouldn't connect to my phone, so when this happened I just started using the USB source and then the USB wouldn't work so finally just used the radio and now none of them works. Even the warning sound on the backup sensor doesn't work.. All the other features on the Uconnect is work except there's no sound. I've tried disconnecting the Battery and also did a factory reset and none of them worked. Any other helpful advice please.. thank you

Unplug the fuse...it will be under the backseat on the passenger side. Wait 2 seconds and plug back together. Its one of those larger box bricks. The fuse will be against the outer panel, you do not need to lift the amp cover to access.

Hears a reset that one of the Ram Specialist on the site posted not sure if this helps but it’s worth a try. Good luck ramcares said: Hi Rammin88, Sorry to hear about this! You can try performing a soft reset your Uconnect system: "Step 1) Put your vehicle into the accessories mode (ACC or RUN) For keyless start (push-button) vehicles: push the start button twice without having your foot on the gas or brake pedal Step 2) Hold down the volume and tuner knob buttons, at the same time, for thirty seconds. Radio On but No Sound

  • Add to quote

Something weird is happening. Saturday I spent a couple hours tuning my DSP. Then again Sunday morning about an hour. I started buttoning up everything after Sundays sessions. I was listening to music on the new tune, prying off the plastic "Dodge" emblem in the center of my steering wheel to put on a custom one I had done. The horn was honking like crazy despite my best efforts, but I eventually got it off. As I was smoothing the custom emblem in place, I started to hear some static and cutting in/out of the radio. I was thinking "How the hell could changing out this emblem mess with my electronics?". After about 10 minutes of verifying the amp and dsp still had power lights and connections, pulled fuses in the box in the trunk to make sure none were blown, I was really starting to get worried. It was only after noticing that my windows stopped going up/down with the door opening/closing that it hit me....I never started my car during any of those tuning sessions. My battery must be dead. Sure enough, car wouldn't start. What a dumbass. So I hook up my charger and start charging and when it gets up to 14.3v I unhook the charger. Car starts right back up. However, I have no sound. Radio is on, I can change XM stations. I can go to bluetooth and control my phone, Pandora, etc. I can switch to my SD card and USB drive pulling up songs. Everything seems to be functioning, but no sound is coming through. I did have a CEL light though. So, I figured that was probably because the battery. I check with my DMM and yup, 14.3v. So I disconnect the negative terminal for about an hour. I reconnect the negative terminal, car starts, no CEL anymore, but still no sound. Power lights on my DSP and amp are lit. I don't have a clue. This is a 2016 Scat Pack Shaker, with the base 6 speaker alpine (after market speakers, amp, DSP though of course). Does anybody have any ideas on what could possibly be happening?

Bigdodge

Any way to plug in a factory speaker to see if you have sound? That will tell u if it's the alternate accessories u have installed or a factory issue. Also need to go back and check for loose wiring. Sent from my Nexus 6P

I put some alligator clips on a spare speaker and touched the leads entering my DSP for all six speakers and got sound from all six. Even though I was positive that it wasn't loose wiring, since the problem arose without me touching any wiring, I thought I'd do my due diligence and check connections in the trunk. As I was unhooking the first of the six RCA connections on the AMP I heard sound briefly. So I proceeded to plug the cable back in and heard sound briefly again but by the time the cable was fully seated the sound was back off. Pulled it back out, same thing, sound came on and off. So I just touched the center conductor on the cable to the outer conductor on the amp and I got sound. Happened on every connection. I tried some spare RCA cables, same thing. So I called Crutchfield and they say that there is probably a short in the unit and will ship me out a new one. Very strange, but I'm glad it looks like it will get sorted and so far has been pretty painless. I'm just glad it was nothing with any of the stock components. Car is only four months old and I would have hated to get the warranty work rejected because of my aftermarket equipment.

Glad u were able to diagnose it. I know what u mean about warranty work. I just installed a ms8 and had to cut the harness coming from the factory amp. Im certain I could hide it well but really don't want to go through the trouble. One good thing about paying the high prices of crutchfield is if u do have an issue they will take care of u. No sound front speakers

Roman Moroni

  • Add to quote

Just picked a 2014 Charger SE, there is absolutely no sound coming from the front speakers at all. Yes, I checked the fader. When it is set to only the front speakers, there is nothing. Asked my local Dodge dealer what might cause this, they said the speakers could be blown. All four? Wouldn't there be some sound coming out, even if all four were blown? I checked all fuses that I believe are related to the sound system. They are all fine. Disconnected negative terminal for 20 minutes as well. Not sure what else to do, or where else to check. Anyone have any Ideas? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance, me.

Are there after market speakers in the rear or an aftermarket subwoofer in the trunk? Depending on what stereo the car had from the factory and how any aftermarket parts were installed, the car might not think there's a load on the speakers and stop outputting sound to protect the wiring in the car.

Thanks for the replies. It is the stock stereo. When I first got it, and turned on the sound system, and it was feebly loud, I just assumed the stereo sucked. But, I soon realized that the sound was only coming from the rear speakers, even with the fader set to center. Only the rear speakers produce sound. I am lost as to what could be the issue. Thanks again, me.

If any aftermarket was removed it could be a wiring/connector issue. You will have to trace/test the speaker circuit for the speakers that are not working. Check the speaker feed (+) circuit and return (-) circuit at the wire harness connector for continuity to ground. There should be no continuity. If there's continuity., repair the shorted speaker feed (+) and/or return (-) circuits(s) to the speaker. If the speaker feed (+) circuit and return (-) circuit check out OK ... Disconnect the wire harness connector at the inoperative speaker. Check for continuity between the speaker feed (+) circuit of the radio receiver wire harness connector and the speaker wire harness connector. Repeat the check between the speaker return (-) circuit of the radio receiver wire harness connector and the speaker wire harness connector. In each case, there should be continuity. If continuity, replace the faulty speaker. If no continuity, repair the open speaker feed (+) and/or return (-) circuit. .

Thanks again for replying. After fighting with the dealer where I purchased it, who initially told me to go spit, I spoke with the head honcho who assured me that is not the way they do business and my issue would be taken care of.

Had the issue been resolved and so how was it fixed? Mine likes to play sound every so often but narrowed it down to driver speaker not producing sound when they all feel like working. I think it may be the bad speaker shorting it all any options?

No sound from stereo

  • Add to quote

I have an '07 SXT with the premium sound system, sub and liftgate speakers. The stereo works but no sound from the speakers. Also the remote for the door locks stopped working at the same time. Any suggestions are appreciated.

08sunburst

Does it not work on all sources(cd, am, fm)? You can try to disconnect the battery, and that will reset things, and that might help, but to me sounds like either the radio is shot, or the amp is shot. You could try changing the battery in the keyfob. Just have to pry it open and see what kind of battery it is as i dont have keyless on my car.

There is no sound from any source (am, fm, cd, aux). I have tried the battery disconnect reset trick but nothing happened. The battery in the keyfob is fine, I have even tried my spare key.

Interesting.. I assume you are out of warranty? Sounds like an issue that only the dealer is going to be able to fix.. The radio could be bad, or the amp, and they keyless could have just stopped working at the same time, but the wiring in the car is so complex because everything is run through canbus.

jadenstate

These could be related, I would start checking fuses, sometimes random fuses do random things, go through all of them one by one, might be a quick fix.

I am having the same issue. Last night everything worked fine, and then I went to start my car this morning and nothing. Everything came on as it should but there was no sound. The radio only seems to be able to decrese the volume, everytime I turn the knob right nothing happens but when I turn it left it shows the volume at zero. Does anyone know why the radio would just all of a sudden not be able to increase the volume? As a side note, its 20 below here with 40 below wind chills, so when I start the car I alway hit mute right away to prevent the speakers from going bad being cold. Wonding if that has anything to do with it...

which stereo do you have? the 6 disc or the single disc?

I have the 6 disc player, but over my lunch break everything worked fine. The only thing I can think of is that in extreme cold something is preventing it from playing. Idk if the original poster is having the same issues as me. Has anyone heard of the cold interferring with the radio functionality?

Why is it that when I look at window stickers for 2011 and 2012 Dodge Journeys many say that they include "6 Infinity® Premium Speakers with Subwoofer" but when you get inside the car the badging by the speakers says "Alpine"? Here are two window stickers of cars I've seen in person that say "Infinity" on the sticker and "Alpine" inside the car:

Everything I can find says that the premium system is Alpine, but my window sticker also says Infinity. Maybe the older system was Infinity and they just never updated the window sticker listing?

I just called Dodge; their documentation says that they're definitely Infinity speakers according to their documentation, but then had no explanation of why the interiors of existing cars on the lots are badged as "Alpine". They said that the dealership should have more information (LOL).

On the side note.... where is the subwoofer? I couldn't find it.

I think it's in the trunk.

Subwoofer is in the trunk, driver's side behind the grill. Not much of one as it is only a 6" sub. Has about as much punch as the 6x9's in the door.

According to the link generaltso provided above, it has an 8" subwoofer:

Do you have a link where it says that the Journey comes with a 6" subwoofer?

I was told by the salesman the sub was 6". I haven't seen anything that does support that. The window sticker just says w/subwoofer. The brochure has nothing on it either. Not sure if Crutchfield or another stereo site would have specs on factory systems or not. The link generaltso provided says 8", but also says it has 6x9 shelf speakers. 6x9 are in the rear doors also.

My 2012 R/T has Alpine speakers, not Infinity. Fine with me, IMHO Alpine is a step up from Infinity.

Dodge's website also says it is an Alpine system:

http://www.dodge.com/en/2012/journey/technology/entertainment/index.html

I know the badges say Alpine, but does your window sticker say Infinity? I have no doubt that it's an Alpine system, but it's weird that the window stickers all seem to say that they're Infinity speakers.

I don't remember what my window sticker said. I do seem to remember seeing Infinity mentioned somewhere on the website (perhaps on the "build your Journey" configurator). Truthfully, I have been underwhelmed with Harman International's automotive car offerings for the last few years (Infinity is one of Harman's brands).

Automotive *sound* offerings is what I meant to say above.

This may explain some of the confusion: I believe early production 2011 Journeys had Infinity then Chrysler went witn Alpine and some units may have left with a Infinity speakers but the maroney label was updated to Alpine:

Funny thing is, when you look through their gallery and system layout pages, for the Journey, it says that it has the 9 speaker, 7.1 surround sound system, so it doesn't even look like Alpine know what they are giving Dodge, let alone Dodge knowing.

Edit: and to make it more interesting, on the Dodge.ca site, they list the premium system as being from Boston Accoustics . Go Fig....

Oh how I wish I had that fantastic Boston Acoustics system from my Caliber . . .

"Funny thing is, when you look through their gallery and system layout pages, for the Journey, it says that it has the 9 speaker, 7.1 surround sound system, so it doesn't even look like Alpine know what they are giving Dodge, let alone Dodge knowing"

Not sure what picture you looked at :

THEN CLICK ON THE DODGE LOGO, THEN CLICK ON THE PIC OF THE JOURNEY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN ,

it shows you a pic, of 4 6x9 speakers, 2 3.5speakers, the amp and the woofer.

" Dodge including a 7.1 channel surround sound system available on the Durango and Charger, and a premium audio system available on the Charger and Journey"

THE 7.1 IS ONLY ON THE DURANGO AND CHARGER ....

After you click on DODGE logo, then the JOURNEY logo and after the picture pulls up.

If you click on the left side where you see like a siloutte of the speakers, the Journey will pop up and shows you a cross section fo were everthing is.

as I said, I clicked on system layout and gallery, but for the full sequence, I went to http://www.experiencealpine.com/ , I CLICKED ON THE DODGE LOGO, THEN CLICKED ON THE PIC OF THE JOURNEY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN. I THEN SCROLLED TO THE RIGHT UNTIL I CAME TO SYSTEM LAYOUT, AND GOT THIS PICTURE PRESENTED TO ME:

I THEN CLOSED THAT SCREEN AND WENT AGAIN TO THE RIGHT UNTIL I FOUND GALLERY AND CLICKED ON IT AND FOUND THIS PICTURE:

Hopefully that helps you understand what I'm trying to point out, which is a presentation of a DODGE JOURNEY, with 9 speakers, and One Amp , unless you'd like to edumacate me some more. Now, I do understand that this is a probably a pretty big gaff on Alpine's side, but none the less, it presents even more confusion, particularly, as you say, THE 7.1 IS ONLY ON THE DURANGO AND CHARGER ....

On a side, somewhat related note, the wife and I went to the drive in tonight to see The Avengers, and this system has no power; had seen a number of movies there with the Caliber and it was amazing for it. Also extremely annoying that the DJ would turn off, even when in Acc, every 30 minutes or so and that the interior lighting would only dim if the external lights were on... had to use my had to block out the gauges. Ah well, amazing movie none the less :D

NO,,,that is a pic of the Charger or Durango you click back too.

CLICK ON THE DODGE LOGO.....CLICK ON THE PIC OF THE JOURNEY ON THE RIGHT SIDE. OF THE PAGE.

CLEARLY IN THE PIC IT PULLS UP IS THIS.

A PIC OF 4 6X9 2 3/5 A WOOFER AND AMP.

IF YOU LOOK AT THEN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER YOU WILL SEE SILOUTTE PIC OF THE JOURNEY.CLICK ON THAT AND IT BRINGS UP

A CROSS SECTION THAT SHOWS WERE THE 6 SPEAKERS ARE AND THE AMP AND WOOFER.

I see no confusion on this at all.....none....clearly Alpine and Dodge's press release says: a premium sound system,,,,,NOT 7.1 OR 9 SPEAKERS. IN THE JOURNEY.

THE SYSTEM DEMOSTRATION ON ALPINE CLEALRY SHOWS ONLY 6 SPEAKERS. AND IT SHOWS EXACTLY WERE THEY ARE LOCATED.

THE AMP IS UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE WOOFER IS THE DRIVER REAR COMPARTMENT AND THE SPEAKERS ARE IN THE DOORS AND 3.5 ARE IN THE DASH.

DODGE AND ALPINE DID THE BEST THAT THEY COULD WITH THE LIMITATIONS OF THE CAR.

PART OF THE PROBLEM IS IN BOTH REAR/FRONT DOORS THERE IS A MOUNTING DEPTH PROBLEM OF 2.6" ONLY,WHICH LIMITS YOU GREATLY ON SPEAKER REPLACEMENTS. (TRY AND FIND SOME 6X9 WITH THAT MOUNTING DEPTH,NEARLY IMPOSSIABLE)

THE WOOF AND AMP ARE WHAT THEY ARE.

MAYBE IN THE REDESIGN THEY WILL TRY AND PUT A BETTER SYSTEM IN IT,BUT FOR NOW THIS IS WHAT THE FACTORY GIVES YOU AND UPGRADED FROM THE BASS SYSTEM, BETTER SPEAKERS AND WOOF AND AMP.

LETS REMEMBER THAT THE AVP,SE,SXT ALL ARE STANDARD WITH NOTHING MORE THEN 6 CHEAP SPEAKERS,WHICH I HAVE AND THIS SYSTEM IS CLEARLY AND UPGRADE FROM THAT, A BETTER PREMIUM SYSTEM

AND IF YOU NOTICED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THAT GALLERY PIC YOU HAVE, IT SAYS....DO YOU WANT TO GO BUILD YOUR DURANGO...

Alpine has some touchup in the art dept to do....!

*sigh* whatever dude. You win.

You may have an impedance mismatch. With the same input power, a 4 ohm speaker will sound louder than a 6 ohm speaker. 4 ohms draws more power from the amp.
