From sun and sand to snow, here is some destination inspiration for this year’s winter getaway.

Coastal Mississippi sign

1. Coastal Mississippi

“If you prefer white sand over white snow, then Coastal Mississippi , home of the nation’s longest man-made beach, is a dream destination. “The Secret Coast” celebrates seafood all year but white shrimp and oysters are in their prime during the winter. Enjoy an early round of golf or explore the Mississippi Coastal Birding Trail . Enjoy art museums and casinos, but don’t miss sunset at the beach. I visited in February 2022.

“Spend a six-hour tour aboard a fishing boat. During the winter, the reefs near to the shore are the main target. Redfish, black drum, and sheepshead are the main attractions, with speckled trout and flounder as understudies. Some restaurants will cook your catch.

Pro Tip: “Buy a Coastal Mississippi Attractions Pass , which provides admission for one to 10 area attractions. The pass comes straight to your phone, ready to use. Attractions include the Biloxi Lighthouse , the fascinating Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum , and the Pascagoula River Audubon Center .” — Roxie Yonkey

2. Frankenmuth, Michigan

“Although a visit to Frankenmuth (an easy 90-minute drive north from Detroit ) is enjoyable year-round , the city known as ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’ really shines at Christmas time . The streets are lined with confectionaries that will draw you in with the tantalizing aroma of fresh fudge and boutiques selling goods that will make quick work of your holiday gift list.

“Make sure to stay in the know about special events in advance of your trip by keeping tabs on what the visitor’s center has planned, from scavenger hunts to ice skating to horse-drawn carriage rides.

“Frankenmuth is also home to the world’s largest Christmas store, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland , which is open all year round, but is especially fun to check out during the holidays. Also filed under don’t-miss experiences are the world-famous chicken dinner at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and checking out the glockenspiel at the Bavarian Inn daily at noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m.

Pro Tips: “ Layer up to stay warm outdoors without getting too sweaty indoors. Plan to eat early and make dining reservations. Frankenmuth rolls up the sidewalks early and trying to find dinner after 7 p.m. might leave you hungry if you haven’t planned ahead.” — Jill Robbins

Yacht Basin, Hilton Head Island

3. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

“One of my favorite winter vacation destinations is Hilton Head Island , South Carolina. We’re still exploring snowbird destinations , but this is one we keep coming back to. It’s a welcome reprieve from the cold and snow of Minnesota, and we love the 12 miles of sandy beaches, the more than 60 miles of paved bike paths (since we are big fans of biking ), and the abundant seafood and flavors of the Lowcountry. It’s also popular for golf and boutique shopping.

“We like to stay in or near Harbour Town and enjoy the lighthouse and pier (great place to spot dolphins) and see the deluxe yachts in the Yacht Basin. The sunsets over the harbor on Calibogue Sound are the exclamation point on this great destination. Hilton Head has been a favorite of ours for several years and I’m happy to say we have plans to visit again in 2023.” — Joan Sherman

4. Interlaken, Switzerland

“I’m a little biased when it comes to Switzerland . I love how the Swiss live their best life. From floating down the Rhine River at lunchtime to hitting the slopes in the Jungfrau region , Switzerland is an outdoor playground.

“On a recent ski trip to Interlaken , I explored the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe , a mountain-top observation destination 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level. With observation decks, snack bars, and gift shops, Top of Europe is a fun way to spend an afternoon viewing brilliant snow-covered Bernese Alps.

“The Ice Palace , carved with picks and saws from the frozen ice mass in the 1930s, is a frosty and slippery adventure through the mountain. Everything is ice — walls, ceilings, and floors. Ice artists carve stunning works of art in the wall’s nooks along the frozen pathway. Even with hats and mittens, you need a steaming cup of Swiss hot cocoa to round out this frosty adventure.” — Sandi Barrett

5. Lake George, New York

“ Lake George, New York , is one of the few places that lured this Southerner to visit during the winter. I visited four years ago but would love to go back. Expect a lovely place in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains for snowmobiling, dining, special events like ice carving, and outdoor ice bars.

“The  Lake George Winter Carnival  takes place every weekend in February, with lots of wintery fun. Highlights include chowder and chili cook-offs, fireworks, ATV races, and the highly anticipated outhouse race. Besides the Winter Carnival, enjoy a delicious meal (including creamy Liver pâté) from Caldwell House and drink great beer and trivia Thursday nights at  Adirondack Brewery .

“There are two awesome places to stay in Lake George.  Holiday Inn Resort Lake George  has a welcoming lobby, fireplace, spacious rooms, and an outdoor fire pit. It is also close to ski trails. Or, in nearby Bolton Landing is  The Sagamore Resort . Built in 1883, the historic luxury property features award-winning dining and activities.” — Melody Pittman

“ Nevis is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. There’s plenty of Caribbean sunshine to thaw cold bones, but not a lot of tourists, which is one of the things I like most. Here, you’ll have quiet peace of mind. The beauty of Nevis is the inactive volcano, mountains that are often shrouded in mist, and yes, that Caribbean Sea.

“A walk through The Botanical Gardens of Nevis , with tropical plants from around the world and stunning artwork, is serene. One of my favorite places is The Rocks restaurant at the Golden Rock Inn, with its sea views, cascading ponds, and lush gardens. My sanctuary on Nevis was the Four Seasons Resort on Pinney’s Beach. As I sat seaside, nestled by rocks, watching the sunset at the resort’s Mango restaurant, it confirmed I was indeed in paradise.” Sheryl Nance-Nash

Jackson Square in New Orleans

7. New Orleans, Louisiana

“The winter months are the perfect time to visit the fabulous city of New Orleans , Louisiana, and my favorite time is the week after Christmas. The mild temperatures during the winter months mean the weather is usually ideal for exploring the streets of the French Quarter and Garden District. Enjoy eating beignets on the patio of Cafe Du Monde before walking through the famous Jackson Square . Don’t miss wandering down Royal Street , admiring the gorgeous antique shops, and popping into the fun and unique art galleries that line the street.

“The winter season in New Orleans also means fewer crowds, which also equates to lower prices for lodging. Winter also brings about numerous concerts, festivals , and the opening season of Carnival . Of course, if you are visiting around the holidays, the city is also aglow with holiday lights and festive celebrations, making winter in New Orleans even more spectacular.” — Michelle Snell

8. New Smyrna Beach, Florida

“When winter comes, I’m for staying warm. That’s why I just visited New Smyrna Beach . There’s a variety of things to do. Old Fort Park is a mystery-laden coquina ruins. The most accepted theory is that it was remains of a home built for one of Dr. Andrew Turnbull’s partners on their huge indigo plantation that was the first settlement here. Newer Sugar Mill Ruins once stood on the Cruger and DePeyster Plantation. New Smyrna Museum of History tells the history of New Smyrna Beach. Housed in a restored 19th-century church, the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum offers a glimpse of African American history in New Smyrna.

“ Marine Discovery Center showcases local marine life. In Canaveral National Seashore , take a Viking Eco-Tours kayak tour, visit Turtle Mound, a shell midden dated to 1000 BCE, and visit Eldora, the remnants of a community from 1877. There are lots of dining choices. For lodging, check out Victoria 1883 bed and breakfast.” — Kathleen Walls

9. Ogden, Utah

“I visited Ogden, Utah , last December, and the minute we arrived, I fell in love. It’s the gateway to challenging ski resorts like Powder Mountain and Snowbasin , and plenty of places to cross-country ski or snowshoe nearby. One stroll down Historic 25th Street and you’re transported to a ‘Wild West’ town with tons of history. It’s the place where the Transcontinental Railroad combined the Union and Pacific Railroads. The storefronts from the late 1800s are intact, but house eclectic boutiques and incredible dining venues. The history, art scene, and culture here are combined with wintry activities. It’s the best of both worlds for ski enthusiasts and foodies.” — Jeanine Consoli

10. San Antonio, Texas

“Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So to escape the winter chill in North Texas, I like to travel south in my car. There are several things to do in San Antonio in the winter — one being the San Antonio River Walk . It’s always lovely for a nice stroll and guided boat tours operate year-round. Restaurants are booming this time of year as well, so if you decide to go, you still may have a wait time.

“Also, the Natural Bridge Caverns are nice to visit in the winter because it’s not so humid in the cave. If you’ve never been to the San Antonio Missions , including the Alamo, winter is a great time to visit for a great Texas History lesson. It’s not as crowded during this time.

Pro Tip: “Bring a heavy jacket if planning to take part in a guided riverboat tour. It does get a little chilly riding on the water.” — Kim Croisant

An early morning ocean view on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands

11. Tenerife, Canary Islands

“The largest of the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Tenerife seemed like paradise when I reviewed photos online, booking my flight soon afterward. It was 2004 when in Mosul, Iraq, in a war zone working an 84-hour workweek when not hiding in a bomb shelter, I needed a pinch of peace and paradise. My condo at the Peria Gris (Pearly Grey) in Callao Salvaje along the southern coast of Tenerife was perfect with its small kitchen, balcony looking out over the ocean, and location in a thriving downtown business area for shopping, dining, and just hanging out.

“The scenery of dramatic cliffs falling straight into the raging turquoise ocean was truly spectacular. Renting a car in three precious days, I drove every winding road along the mountains, hiked trails near the snow-covered Mount Teide volcano , devoured amazing Spanish cuisine and wine, and found peace in paradise. A lot has changed since then, but Tenerife is still paradise no matter what time of year.” — Ann Bush

The slopes of Niseko are among the finest in the world.

Winter escapes Gran Canaria Canary Islands

Canary Islands, Spain

It’s not quite hot enough to swim off the white sand beaches of Spain ’s Canary Islands in the winter, but to make up for it, there are fewer crowds, ever-impressive views, and off-season prices on this cluster of volcanic isles. For what it’s worth, the island of Gran Canaria, just off northwestern Africa, is said to have the best climate in the world.

Zermatt Switzerland

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Revealed: the most popular winter travel destinations in 2023

According to Airbnb, this is where everyone will be going over the next few months

Liv Kelly

Whether you’re after a festive city break to some of Europe ’s dazzling Christmas markets, or you want to forget the rain, wind and abominable temperatures altogether and get some January sun, there are plenty of fantastic travel destinations to choose from this coming winter season.

And holiday rental platform Airbnb has put in the work to find out the top trending spots this winter. Based on searches for winter travel between January 1 and September 15 2023, they’ve compiled a list of ten global destinations.

At the top? It’s Hong Kong . The city is especially popular in the autumn and early winter for its moderate temperatures but low humidity. Then there’s the vibrant nightlife and abundance of exciting food – a perfect winter getaway, if you ask us.

Buenos Aires , the sprawling Argentinian capital, is second on Airbnb’s winter travel list. Offering those of us travelling from the chilly northern hemisphere a much-needed dose of sun, the ‘Paris of South America’ makes for an ideal escape from the blistering cold. The best time to visit? Anytime before early January, when the Argentinian summer temperatures really start heating up.

Muang Pattaya is set to be the third most popular destination this winter, also offering travellers warm weather during the December to February period. The Thai city, which sits on the eastern Gulf coast, is known for its stunning beaches – no wonder it’s been dubbed the ‘Hawaii of the East’.

Thailand has proved particularly popular for winter travel this year, accounting for two of the four Asian destinations to make the list. Four European destinations are also in the ranks, including two places in Spain .

Here are the top winter travel destinations for 2023, according to Airbnb:

  • Buenos Aires , Argentina
  • Muang Pattaya , Thailand
  • Playa Blanca , Spain
  • Tokyo , Japan
  • Ao Nang , Thailand
  • Costa Teguise , Spain

When we talk about winter vacation destinations in the United States, it’s not all ski resorts and snow-covered mountain towns (although, there are plenty of those). Enjoy rocking a bikini in December, January and February (and not for polar plunge-related reasons)? Consider sun-drenched spots such as Florida and Hawaii . “We’re seeing a much higher demand for leisure destinations in states like New Mexico, Arizona and South Carolina with mild climates,” says Carly Patane Moss, travel expert at Black Tomato . Our list also includes a mix of exciting cities for metropolitan enthusiasts and more pastoral picks for people who need a break from the urban sprawl or just plainly prefer to go in another vacation direction. Don’t forget about quiet coastal villages that you’d usually associate with summer but really wow during the colder months and national parks . Basically, you’ve got a ton of options when it comes to winter escapes . Scroll on and pick your perfect spot.

2. North Conway, New Hampshire

  • Why We Love It: winter sports, New England coziness
  • Where to Stay: The Bears Den (from $135/night), Spacious Home (from $199/night)

Many people think of the birthplace of skiing as being out west, but the truth is that North Conway holds that distinction. This storied New Hampshire town puts visitors in proximity to 10 different ski resorts and cross-country centers with all sorts of varied terrain. Need a break from the winter sports stuff? Peep pastel-painted Victorian houses and shops along Main Street or hop aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad . The White Mountain Hotel & Resort is an alpine standby with all the cozy comforts (i.e., an outdoor heated swimming pool, fire pit, hot tub and Finnish sauna).

3. Camden, Maine

  • Why We Love It: outdoor activities, New England coziness, coastal sweeps
  • Where to Stay: Marigold Cottage (from $175/night), Harbor Waterfront Cottage (from $175/night)

One of the most charming towns in Maine , Camden is far from just a summer destination—though warm weather brings a certain vibrancy to the “Jewel of the Coast.” The winter sun reflects off the waters of Penobscot Bay, creating a scene that looks straight out of a movie. It's certainly worth bundling up to stroll around the harbor, hike in Camden Hills State Park and barrel downhill at the only ski area on the East Coast with ocean views. With any luck, you might be able to get tickets to a show at the restored Camden Opera House.

best winter vacations in the us yosemite national park california

4. Yosemite National Park, California

  • Why We Love It: nature, wildlife, hiking
  • Where to Stay: Yosemite Hilltop Cabins (from $245/night), The Ahwahnee (from $829/night)

It’s hard to put the magic of winter in Yosemite National Park—which deservedly ranks among the most beautiful places in the Golden State and the best national parks in the United States —into words. The snowy terrain, scenic drives and hikes for every skill level really just need to be experienced IRL. Thankfully, you’ll have plenty of room to roam since crowds tend to dwindle during the chillier months. While camping and glamping are options (weather and permit contingent), if you’d rather stay somewhere with four walls and a whole lot of history, The Ahwahnee is a stately base camp for exploring.

5. Maui, Hawaii

  • Why We Love It: sunshine, scenery, beaches, scenic drives
  • Where to Stay: Condo on the Beach (from $230/night), Remodeled Oceanfront Condo (from $751/night)

Swim, surf and snorkel at the 30 miles of beaches. Plan an action-packed adventure to Haleakala National Park. (Have you seen pics of the setup at Lilia ?) Bars bustle with excitement. Cool seasonal activities like ice skating on The Rink at Rockefeller Center and snowy walks through Central Park are always a blast.

Among the most spiritual and stunningly beautiful places in the country, Sedona is one of the U.S. destinations that will reinvigorate your soul . It has an overwhelming number of incredible hikes like Devil’s Bridge Trail that give travelers a front-row view of the spectacular red rocks—which, in the winter, might even be covered with a few flakes. In keeping with its reputation as a high-vibe mecca, downtown teams with New Age shops. Unwind even further with a long soak followed by a glass of wine by the fireplace at one of the many cozy inns around town.

8. Charlottesville, Virginia

  • Why We Love It: wine, food, history, scenery
  • Where to Stay: Quirk Hotel Charlottesville (from $212/night), Honey House (from $179/night)

Charlottesville puts wineries, farm-to-table fare and history within easy reach. It’s chilly but far from frost-bite status so that shouldn’t be a deterrent from doing things outdoors. Just pack a coat and you’re ready to go wine tasting at Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard , follow the Brew Ridge Trail and visit Monticello. Hungry? Savor local ingredients at Marigold by Jean-Georges at Keswick Hall . Wondering where to stay? It’s hard to resist the millennial-pink color palette of the Quirk Hotel Charlottesville . And you can’t beat the address in the heart of historic downtown.

A winter sports paradise, nestled at the base of the Tenmile Range, Breckenridge is one of the best ski towns in the United States and an obvious pick for a snowy escape—though, that doesn’t make it any less deserving of a shoutout. Ski and snowboard to your strolling content, join in on the aprés-ski action, meander through the western-y historic district and grab a beer at Breckenridge Brewery . When vacationing in Breckenridge, who wants to waste time commuting to the mountain? Not us! Skip the shuttle and stay at the slopeside Grand Colorado On Peak 8 .

  • Why We Love It: history, hotels, walkability
  • Where to Stay: Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk (from $320/night), The St. Anthony, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Antonio (from $395/night)

A south-central Texas city with a big footprint and even bigger personality, San Antonio is best known for The Alamo (which, for those who didn’t pay attention in history class, commemorates the 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico). Definitely take advantage of the mild weather with a stroll along the 15-mile pedestrian riverfront pathway. It’s also hard to compete with the views from the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas on a clear day. In terms of hotels, the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk offers an unbeatable location in the Arts District and an elevated contemporary feel.

Whether it’s celebrating holidays like New Year’s Eve or just another Friday night, Key West turns up the heat with bars, clubs and cabarets. On the flip side, it’s also a laid-back destination where sipping rum cocktails in a hammock is a perfectly acceptable way to pass a few hours. Located just feet from the after-dark excitement of Duval Street, the breezy Almond Tree Inn invites guests to soak in all the good vibes with colorful decor and local art.

12. Hudson, New York

  • Why We Love It: antique shops, food, galleries, hotels, scenery
  • Where to Stay: Hudson Valley Cottage (from $205/night), The Amelia (from $358/night)

Just a two-hour train ride from New York City, Hudson is a hotspot for Brooklynites seeking a more laid-back lifestyle in a pastoral setting. It’s also a popular spot for peeping fall foliage. However, autumn isn’t the only standout season. The quieter winter period has its perks—among them fewer tourists popping into the many antique shops, farm-to-table eateries, wine bars and art galleries. It’s also easier to snag a room at one of the cute little hotels like The Amelia . Besides, the town itself looks as pretty as a picture covered in snow.

best winter vacations in the us sonoma california

13. Sonoma, California

  • Why We Love It: wine, vineyards, food, scenery
  • Where to Stay: Windhaven Cottage (from $194/night), Kenwood Inn & Spa (from $350/night)

Two words: Cabernet season. When the harvest period ends and the droves of thirsty tourists depart, Sonoma shines in all its gorgeous, laid-back glory. A chill in the air means it’s time for knit sweaters and sipping flights of bold reds on open-air patios with blankets (and perhaps a heater). The private guided tasting in the library at Hamel Family Wines also includes a food pairing that spotlights what’s in season locally. And it’s still a great time to get outdoors and explore picturesque Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Many of the wine country inns welcome visitors with fireplace-clad rooms.

14. Leavenworth, Washington

  • Why We Love It: Bavarian vibes, German food, beer, outdoor activities
  • Where to Stay: Aventyr Hus (from $173/night), Willkommen Zuhause (from $200/night)

Dreaming of jetting off to Europe but can’t swing the price of a plane ticket? Board a flight bound for central Washington. Leavenworth is well known as one of the best Christmas towns in the United States . But even after the Santa chasers depart, this enchanting village in the Cascade Mountains still delights travelers with its Bavarian character and snow-dusted scenery. It’s full of alpine architecture, German restaurants (bring on the schnitzel), beer halls and cozy lodges that welcome guests with fireside cocoa. Simply put: it’s a storybook setting for a winter trip that looks and feels like a fairytale.

15. New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Why We Love It: history, food, nightlife, hotels
  • Where to Stay: Hotel Peter & Paul (from $179/night), The Chloe (from $450/night)

New Orleans enjoys a mild climate and pleasant year-round temps, so it’s never too cold to really soak in the energy of the Big Easy. Folks visiting in the winter can groove to live music, eat delicious cuisine (we’re salivating just thinking of po’boys, crawfish etouffee and beignets) and take an old-timey trolley ride. On the spooky side of things, there are ghost tours and haunted bar crawls . History without the eeriness awaits at Hotel Peter & Paul , an elegant boutique gem that used to be a church, schoolhouse, rectory and convent.

16. Sausalito, California

  • Why We Love It: seaside charm, food, hiking, nature
  • Where to Stay : Ocean View Home (from $380/night), Cavallo Point Lodge (from $449/night)

Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge towards Sausalito, the haziness and rolling fog of San Francisco instantly becomes a thing of the past as bright sunshine and national parkland come into focus. Traverse the coastal hiking paths and thank the glorious microclimate for only having to pack a medium-weight jacket. Walk around downtown, peep the houseboats and eat at the famous Sushi Ran . Another fantastic place for dinner, Murray Circle at Cavallo Point Lodge (the Fort Baker hotel that gives guests the chance to snooze in a former army officer’s home) offers seasonal fare and sweeping views.

17. Charleston, South Carolina

  • Why We Love It: history, food, cocktail scene, hotels
  • Where to Stay: Zero George (from $430/night), Hotel Bennett (from $420/night)

The occasional dusting of fresh flakes makes the Holy City even more magical. But, generally speaking, the weather in the winter is pretty mild. That’s great news since you’ll be walking a lot. We’re big fans of seeing the historic sites on foot during the day. The opulent mansion along The Battery and Rainbow Row are not to be missed. While the culinary scene buzzes with hot new restaurants and stalwarts cooking up delicious Low Country cuisine. Grab a nightcap at one of the many cozy cocktail bars before retiring to a stylish hotel such as Zero George or Hotel Bennett .

Best Winter Vacations in the US - A beach in Amelia Island at dusk.

18. Amelia Island, Florida

  • Why We Love It: beaches, nature, recreation
  • Where to Stay: Oceanfront Apartment (from $150/night), Oceanfront Condo (from $211/night)

Snowbirds looking for a more subdued, leisurely alternative to Miami and Key West should escape to sun-splashed Amelia Island. Philadelphia beckons travelers with its world-class food scene—from the iconic Philly cheesesteak to more vegan eats than almost anywhere else—and well-preserved historic sites such as the Liberty Bell. The myriad museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Franklin Institute, are fascinating spots to wait out blustery spells. The many bars provide an entirely different type of more revelrous refuge. One of the many great things about a winter trip to San Diego is that you don’t have to load up a suitcase with boots, gloves, hats and heavy coats. Which incidentally leaves more room in your luggage to bring back items from the boutiques in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. While it might be a little chilly to bust out a bikini for an afternoon sun session on the many beautiful beaches but that shouldn’t preclude you from strolling along the sandy stretches, enjoying a picnic by the ocean or even taking a surf lesson (that’s why we have wetsuits, right?).

Winter in Santa Fe is a bit slower and less crowded as compared to the bustling summer months. That shift gives this Sangre de Cristo foothills city a laid-back feel that’s super pleasant for a relaxing weekend trip. Don’t get us wrong, there’s still plenty to do between walking tours of the historic district, visits to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and gallery hopping. It just means fewer people to bump into while stopping on the street to admire the Pueblo-style architecture. Outdoor pursuits such as trails and hot springs are another big draw.

Nostalgic fun takes the form of sledding on the parkland surrounding Soldier Field and ice skating at the rink in Millennium Park. Go say hi to some of the snuggly critters at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Top 10 trending winter destinations for U.S. travelers

From charlotte to chattanooga, these trending domestic winter destinations may surprise you..

Perri Ormont Blumberg

Blink and winter will be here. While we lament the end of fall foliage spotting and perfectly crisp hiking weather, we’re excited for the snowiest season. Whether you’re a skier, a snowboarder, or a sitter with hot chocolate en tote, there’s no shortage of incredible travel destinations to head to in our own backyard. (And don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about those who’d like to avoid the cold altogether.)

If you’re looking for a U.S. city to plot your next getaway around, this is the list for you. To create a rundown of trending destinations this winter, our travel data gurus looked at the fastest growing domestic destinations that U.S. users are searching on Tripadvisor, versus the same travel dates year over year. The results may surprise you, but will get the wheels turning for your next epic trip to a beach town oasis or mountain metropolis (or both).

10. Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, SC , in the winter? You betcha. While many flock to this bustling beachy hub in the summer, you can beat the booming crowds and still amp up the fun when the temps drop. This winter season—from November 25, 2022, to January 19, 2023—get your Dolly Parton fix with programming inspired by the inimitable blonde bombshell at Kingston Resorts in Myrtle Beach. We’re talking performances from award-winning tribute artist Karen as Dolly, a tree lighting, and two Dolly-themed dinner events at the newly opened Black Drum Brewing restaurant. There will also be “Dolly-fied suites” outfitted to the nines with rhinestones, pink Christmas trees, and wreaths, plus weekly cocktail and mocktail specials inspired by the Queen of Country.

Or, swap music mania for a trip to Ripley’s, where you can visit an ultra-rare (one in 30 million!) orange lobster of TikTok fame at Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach . Other musts include walking along the (less crowded) boardwalk, visiting Duplin Winery for a wine tasting, and stuffing yourself to the brim at Big Mike’s Soul Food .

9. Charlotte, NC

Charlotte, North Carolina skyline

When you go to Charlotte, NC , in the winter, you’re in for a veritable treat. We mean that both literally at spots like Crave Dessert Bar and Amelie’s French Bakery (red and green macaroons to toast Christmas? Make it a double batch), and in terms of the diverse array of activities the Queen City has to offer. On a wintry escape, make your home base The Ivey’s Hotel , a Travelers’ Choice Award winner, as you explore brewery-filled art districts, Catawba River neighborhoods, see a holiday show at the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra , and visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame .

8. Jekyll Island, GA

There’s just something about Jekyll Island, GA , in the winter months, when the hordes of summer tourists are gone. In their place? A thrumming holiday spirit with hits like a self-guided driving tour of Jekyll Island Historic District to see the Christmas lights, beautiful Christmas decorations at Jekyll Ocean Club , and a trolley tour of the Holly Jolly Jekyll lights show, featuring more than 1,000,000 light bulbs.

Don’t conclude your time on this captivating island without a jaunt to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center for a behind-the-scenes tour. After learning about these magical creatures, keep the educational fun rolling with a jaunt to Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum , where you can verse yourself on the island’s facilitating cultural and natural history. And if you happen to be in town December 22 through December 29, 2022, swing by Great Dunes Park for a nightly fireworks display at 7 p.m.

7. Albuquerque, NM

Sandia Peak covered in snow, in Albquerque, New Mexico

One of the best cold-weather destinations in winter, Albuquerque is home to one of New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secrets: Sandia Peak Ski Area , located in the Cibola National Forest just outside the city. If you’re looking for a less active escape, scope out Expo New Mexico Open Air Flea Market for holiday gifts (weekends only), or head indoors to catch a New Mexico Ice Wolves hockey game. To check into welcoming digs, book at the newly opened Hotel Zazz on Route 66, which works with a slew of local artists from metal flower crafters to soap artisans and has its own speakeasy on-site.

6. Minneapolis

Minneapolis is another emerging destination for winter travel based on our community’s data. Yes, you can ice fish, snow mobile, and ice skate to your heart’s content near Minneapolis and its twin city of St. Paul, but you can also see “The Best Christmas Show in Three Years,” “A Christmas Carol at Guthrie Theater,” and “Georgiana & Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley” to toast Christmas 2022 at local theaters. Other local highlights: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden , Minneapolis Institute of Art , and Terrors of Twin Cities St. Paul Haunted Ghost Tour . When your stomach starts to grumble, Ecuadorian fare at Chimborazo or Pizzeria Lola are always excellent bets.

5. Hilton Head, SC

Fire pit on the Presidential Suite Balcony at Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa

Like Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head is another South Carolina jewel. Here, the coldest months of the year offer fun-filled events like Harbor Town Lights at The Sea Pines Resort ; Historic Holidays on Hilton Head Island with “Authors, Artists & Afternoon Tea” on December 10, 2022; and holiday concerts performed by the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and other musicians. For a break from reality, book your stay at The Westin Hilton Head Resort & Spa , a Lowcountry resort with private access to 12 miles of beaches, four on-site restaurants, and private fire pits. Our travelers call it a “wonderful experience” and a respite with “no detail overlooked”—we think you’ll agree.

4. Indianapolis

Visit Indianapolis this winter for the gorgeous Winterlights display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (a.k.a. Newfields), and you’ll be glad you did. As one Tripadvisor traveler put it , “from now on we will want to make this an annual winter time” outing. In total, some 1.5 million lights glimmer in the garden, and there’s popcorn, hot cocoa, and s’mores, as well as eclectic holiday gifts at the Wintermarket. Beyond Winterlights, our top recs in Indy this winter include Christmas at the Zoo at the Indianapolis Zoo , the Festival of Trees at the Indiana Historical Society , and the toy train wonderland that is Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum .

3. Milwaukee

Exterior of the Milwaukee Art Museum

If you haven’t been to Milwaukee , you might be thinking the Lake Michigan metropolis is best reserved for a summertime vacation. We’re making the case for a visit during the colder months thanks to the Milwaukee Art Museum , where you might stumble into live musicians playing Christmas tunes as you peruse the impressive art collection; the Harley-Davidson Museum , to learn about the history of the motorcycle in America and tour the large collection of wheels (for $5 extra, splurge for the audio tour which Tripadvisor reviewers say “added to the experience”); and the Lakefront Brewery to warm you up with comedy, historical tidbits, and of course, fresh suds. You might just fall in love with Milwaukee so much you plan an encore trip a few months later for Summerfest at Henry Maier Festival Park .

2. Virginia Beach, VA

When you venture to Virginia Beach, VA , during the so-called off season, pack holly jolly and high expectations along with your luggage. We’re talking unhurried visits to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center , a Ghosts of Virginia Beach Dark History Walking Tour , or perhaps a private professional holiday photoshoot on the beach .

Whatever you settle on doing, holidays at the Cavalier Resort are well worth planning your vacation around, with breakfasts with Santa, a Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner, gorgeous decorations, and a Studio 54–themed New Year’s Eve soirée. The number one rated resort in Virginia Beach is worth a visit even if you don’t book a room or suite here—as one of our community members raved, swinging by for after-dinner drinks on Christmas Eve was “so enchanting!”

1. Chattanooga, TN

The lobby of The Edwin Hotel, in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Drumroll, please: The top, trending spot to visit this winter for U.S. travelers is Chattanooga, TN . After dropping off your bags at The Edwin Hotel , a Travelers’ Choice Award winner, get ready to kick the merriment up a notch. Experience the city via the Holiday Trail of Lights , which showcases eight major points of interest across the city decked out in millions of lights, with holiday events, seasonal treats, Santa Claus sightings, and live music along the way. Our favorite vantage point for taking all these sparkling lights in is the snowflake-strung Walnut Street Bridge , one of the longest pedestrian-only bridges in the world, measuring 2,370 feet and erected above the Tennessee River.

Make time to stop at Lookout Mountain , which is just a few miles away from Chattanooga’s bustling downtown. From the high elevation, seven states are visible to the naked eye (and if you want bonus points at trivia night, they are Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, and Alabama). Lest we forget, no trip to Chattanooga is complete without a journey aboard an actual caboose with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum on the North Pole Limited Christmas Train or Holiday Christmas Lights Train with majestic mountain vistas and holiday music. P.S. On Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, you can hop aboard the “Local” for a non-holiday themed ride from Grand Junction Station in Chattanooga that dives into local history and railroad operations.

European Holiday Cheer

Italy, from cultural capitals to Sicily and Lake Como

Italy was terribly crowded and pricey this summer.  To get a true taste of the culture, go in winter, when the weather is mild and the cities and countryside have a more local flavor. Ride a Vespa around Rome; learn how to make pasta in Venice; take in an opera at La Scala in Milan; gather with your family at a private villa on Sicily or Lake Como; or stroll holiday markets in the Dolomites.

France: Paris, Strasbourg’s holiday markets, even Provence

If you got shut out of France this summer because of sold-out hotels and exorbitant prices, now is your chance to book a December trip. The light in Provence in winter is why so many famous artists moved there, and this month is prime time for the region’s acclaimed truffles. Of course, Paris is fabulous for Christmas and New Year’s—the City of Lights gets even more dressed up for the holidays. France’s best Christmas markets are in Strasbourg and Colmar and run until December 24 and 29, respectively. If your trip dates include December 25 or 31, don’t worry that everything will be closed: The right expert can arrange a private cooking class on Christmas, or concert tickets on New Year’s Eve .

A knowledgeable local guide can make the city’s history come alive, whether via an after-hours tour of the Tower of London, an exploration of the city’s street-art scene, or a pub crawl to the best local watering holes.

These houses are tastefully decorated throughout, tree and all, and come fully staffed, so you need not worry about cooking or cleaning over the holidays. Nearby you’ll often find Christmas markets to stroll, but you can just as easily stay on property and enjoy plenty of activities that bring your family together and put you in the Christmas spirit: wreath-making workshops, cocktail masterclasses, even a brass-band recital.

Many of Europe’s charming, illuminated Christmas markets close on December 24, but a growing number are staying open past the holiday. That’s true at many festive markets in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Belgium. A savvy trip designer will work your itinerary to hit the markets that still have a truly local feel.  If you’re near the Netherlands, don’t miss the Amsterdam Light Festival too; it runs until January 22.

Nonstop flights to Belize take off from several U.S. cities that are only about three hours away. Once you’re there, you can explore world-class coral reefs, visit uncrowded Mayan ruins, learn to scuba dive as Wendy’s son did , fish for 100-pound tarpon ( which kept her husband busy ), and laze beside sparkling Caribbean waters.  Accommodations range from beach resorts to overwater bungalows to remote jungle tree houses. If you’re traveling the week leading up to Christmas, you can even charter your own private yacht to enjoy fabulous snorkeling, sunbathing, kayaking, and endless horizons.

Options are extremely limited in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands for the holiday weeks (availability is easier to come by at Galapagos hotels than for boat-based journeys), but mainland Ecuador is a good option, especially if you’re seeking affordability. December temperatures there are in the 70s. It’s easy to combine Quito’s Old Town with a historic hacienda in the nearby Andean highlands, where you can explore craft villages, hike in ecological reserves, and horseback ride on quilt-like pastures. Nature lovers shouldn’t count out a visit to the Amazon, either: While some parts of the region are rainy in December, the Ecuadorian portion is relatively dry (for a jungle, of course), and there is still availability at some luxe eco-lodges.

For an urban experience without the crowds (because the locals are all at the beach), try Mexico City, where the springlike weather brings warm days and cool evenings. Southeast of the capital is Puebla, known for its colonial history, colorful architecture, and culinary and art scenes. And on the Yucatán Peninsula there’s Mérida, a hotspot during both the Mayan and colonial eras, today rich in history and culture.

Winter holiday travel may finally cost less this year

Skiers ski up an empty run in Vail, Colorado

Discounted ski trips can be found in places like Vail, Colorado, where hotel rates have dropped after a pandemic boom.

If last year's holiday vacation sticker shock was too much for you, you might find winter travel in 2023 more appealing—though an unusual Christmas break schedule could upend your plans.

“Room rates have rebounded a bit from the 2022 holiday season—when they rose 50% from prepandemic levels—but they are still up considerably from 2019 in many places,” explains Patrick Scholes, managing director for lodging and leisure equity research at Truist Securities, an investment firm based in Atlanta.

winter travel 2023

Also affecting holiday travel this year is the fact that Christmas and New Years Day will both fall on a Monday, something that happens roughly every seven years. “When this happens, it pushes the holiday into a very short window because it’s not clear when the second week of Christmas vacation should be,” says Paul Tumpowsky, chief executive officer of Skylark, a travel agency based in New York. As a result, booking consolidates into the obvious week, sending prices higher—and availability down.

The silver lining is that airfare from the U.S. has dropped significantly (more on that below), even when compared to levels before the pandemic, according to Consumer Price Index data released in September by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel booking app Hopper, says the coming weeks should be an opportune time to book winter trips . "We expect ticket prices to drop in the last two weeks of September and climb again the second week of October,” she says, adding that prices should peak by late November or early December.

Here’s what you can expect to fork over.

Domestic prices are down, but international travel is up

According to Hopper data compiled exclusively for Bloomberg, domestic holiday flights will be down about 9% from last year, though prices will fluctuate city by city. Roundtrip airfare from major U.S. cities to destinations such as Orlando , for instance, are down 19% and will cost $396 per ticket around Christmas, compared to $491 during the same period last year.

Flying into Las Vegas over the break will cost $341 a seat this year, versus $420 last year.

Prices for international flights, however, are trending upward. As many people have overcome 2022’s renewed fears of getting stuck overseas amid a Covid-19 surge , more people seek to travel to Europe and Asia.

Per Hopper, Christmastime airfare from the U.S. to Asia is up 20% year over year; expect to pay about $1,572 for a ticket to Tokyo, the continent’s most popular holiday destination. In Europe, prices are roughly 16% more expensive than at Christmas 2022; economy-class tickets to major hubs from the US are averaging $934 for a seat.

For a better deal, consider Mexico and Central America: flights to Cancun, for instance, are running $701 a seat compared to last year's $702.

Where to go and what it will cost

The U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, the Caribbean, Europe and Thailand are all set to be the hottest global destinations this winter,  per data from Virtuoso, a network of more than 20,000 luxury travel advisers. "Globally, we see the U.S. as the top holiday destination, not just for Americans but for travelers the world over," says Misty Belles, vice president of global PR at Virtuoso.

She notes that holiday lodging rates have softened from last year in such major U.S. cities as New York (down about 8%) and Los Angeles (down nearly 50%) as pandemic-driven domestic travel to those cities has decreased. Smaller reductions in hotel rates are offered in sunny Florida.

You may even get a deal on your ski trip—if you overlook rising ticket prices for lifts.

"Hotel rates are down about 13% in Vail, Colorado, over last year," Belles offers as an example, adding that rates have cooled in destinations across Colorado, Utah and California, where rates boomed during the second year of the pandemic. (A strong El Niño may bode well for snowfall out West this season.)

Internationally, though, hotel rates are climbing in many cities, surpassing last year's peak pricing. Belles says that luxury hotel rates are up 44% in London and 30% across Hawaii. "Cabo San Lucas [in Mexico’s Baja, California] is commanding hotel rates up to 49% over 2022,” she notes.

An ocean-view room at Waldorf Astoria's Los Cabos Pedregal resort, for instance, runs $2,271 per night during the week of Christmas. Caribbean prices are even higher. For example, an ocean-view room at the Ritz Carlton Grand Caymanin that island’s Seven Mile beach is going for $2,838 per night in Christmas week when a garden-view room at the  Four Seasons Ocean Club in Nassau, the Bahamas, commands $3,200 nightly. The daily price for the same room drops to $2,050 a few weeks later.

No savings for road trips or early January travels

On top of lodging and airfare considerations this year, travelers are also being impacted by high gasoline prices for on-the-ground transportation needs, especially with prices still rising  in some areas. Inflation-impacted food expenses for eating out and shopping for groceries will heighten travel costs, too. "Even as inflation slows, consumers are seeing higher prices than they may have paid for goods and services in the last few years," notes Hopper’s Berg.

That won’t slow travelers. Industry representatives expect demand to remain high this winter—especially during that compressed holiday schedule. And while time off from the workweek might get shortened this year for some employees, travelers with young kids at home will find that Christmas and New Years falling on Mondays is likely to bring a longer break from school this year. Most public schools returned to normal operations on Jan. 3 this year, but they won't do so in 2024 until Jan. 8. "That extra week of January winter break is already proving very popular for families—all of January 2024 is expected to be up about 7% in revenue from last year as a result," says Scholes.

Indeed, Belles says lodging demands through this holiday season won’t just match last year’s. They’ll exceed it.

Scholes says he’s relieved that his family has already booked the holiday vacation. “Because this year is so different, we booked as soon as we got our kids’ winter break schedule from their school.”

Hotels in Mérida, the capital of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, can cost as little as $50 per night in winter, so you'll have plenty of cash to indulge in the city's offerings. Dive far back into Mérida's history while visiting El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida and the nearby Dzibilchaltún ruins, both of which explore local Mayan history for inexpensive admission fees. Meanwhile, in the heart of the city, you'll find influence from Spanish conquerors at the free Catedral de Mérida. Don't forget to explore Mérida's food scene at one of its markets or restaurants.

winter travel 2023

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a popular vacation spot for a reason: Here, you'll find incomparable scenery, glistening white sand and turquoise water. When you're done basking on the beach, grab some snorkeling gear and head to the water; you'll discover an impressive barrier reef by these Caribbean islands that is ripe for exploration. To save money on your island getaway, skip staying at a luxury resort and instead reserve a vacation rental or a room at a smaller hotel. Save even more money by avoiding accommodations on Providenciales, where the country's priciest lodging options are located.

winter travel 2023

It's not hard to plan a cheap tropical vacation in Jamaica. Save money while still enjoying Jamaica's warm winter weather in the low 80s by staying at an all-inclusive resort that includes extras like water sports equipment and private beach access in their base fare. You can find even more deals on accommodations and airfare if you book a vacation package or time your trip for early winter before the snowbirds arrive. With the money you save, book a tour to see one of Jamaica's natural wonders, like Dunn's River Falls or the Blue Hole.

winter travel 2023

Located on the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum's status as a major tourist destination comes as no surprise. Its crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches and fascinating Mayan ruins draw travelers in droves, and winter's pleasant temperatures in the low 80s only add to its appeal. But while this tropical paradise offers plenty of room for luxury, it's possible to stick to a budget. Beyond the favorable exchange rate ($1 equals about $18 Mexican pesos), you can also save money by dining in Tulum Pueblo and choosing accommodations away from the beach.

winter travel 2023

Those in search of a well-rounded winter getaway should travel to Taos, New Mexico. History buffs can spend their trip strolling through Taos Plaza or learning about Taos Pueblo, an adobe village that has been inhabited by the Taos Indian Tribe for more than 1,000 years. Meanwhile, skiers can zip down the slopes at Taos Ski Valley (save money by looking for winter packages and purchasing your tickets before the peak ski season begins). When travelers need to relax, they can head to Manby or Black Rock hot springs to rejuvenate in the naturally warm (and free) waters.

winter travel 2023

The cobblestone streets will probably be covered in snow, but that shouldn't discourage you from exploring neighborhoods like Old Québec and Quartier Petit Champlain. The Canadian city celebrates its way through the frigid temperatures with free or low-cost events and festivals that last from Christmastime to Carnaval in February. When you need to warm up, explore the splendid interiors of Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral and the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine, both of which offer free entry.

winter travel 2023

It's no secret that Lake Tahoe is a great wintertime travel destination. This lake that straddles the California-Nevada border is known for its premier cold-weather activities, including cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and snowshoeing. To save some coin during your trip, plan on booking your getaway early and staying at one of the lake's ski resorts. Though resorts can get pricey at times, they often offer vacation packages or multinight discounts to help you cut costs.

winter travel 2023

A winter vacation in San Miguel de Allende should include time spent exploring the city's markets and cultural institutions, including the Fábrica La Aurora, a textile mill-turned-art-museum and shop. Both El Jardín, the city's main plaza, and Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, an ornate church, are additional must-see sights that won't cost you a dime to enjoy. You'll also want to sample the vast foodie scene: This Mexican city offers everything from fine dining to cheap (but delectable) food truck meals.

winter travel 2023

Though the Southwest brings to mind deserts with scorching temperatures, Santa Fe, New Mexico, conveniently sits close to several different ski resorts. Not only can you schuss the slopes in 40-degree weather, but you can also spend less on lift tickets here than you would in more popular ski destinations. Back in Santa Fe, you can admire art at Canyon Road's 80-plus galleries or stroll through Santa Fe Plaza without spending a cent. If you time your visit for late February, you can also score deals on dining out during Santa Fe's Restaurant Week.

winter travel 2023

If all you dream about for a winter vacation is escaping to a tranquil Mexican beach, Cozumel is your answer. Turquoise water, great snorkeling and warm weather (think: average highs sit in the mid-80s) attract travelers in droves. For lodging, skip the expensive resorts and opt for a bed-and-breakfast or a vacation rental. Use the money you save on accommodations to visit Cozumel's parks, including Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park and Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, which both charge modest entrance fees.

winter travel 2023

Puerto Rico's warm winter temperatures (highs consistently sit in the low 80s) and robust calendar of free festivals and events make it an appealing choice for a cheap winter getaway. Although the winter months bring an influx of tourists to this U.S. territory's sandy shores – raising hotel and airfare prices – it is still possible to achieve an affordable vacation as long as you plan far enough in advance. Luckily, many of Puerto Rico's must-do activities are free, including hiking through El Yunque National Forest and exploring historic Old San Juan.

winter travel 2023

Boasting more than 5,800 acres of skiable terrain, Big Sky, Montana, is a winter sports enthusiast's dream. Here, you'll find a healthy mix of slopes for everyone from beginners to experts. While lift tickets will take up a hefty portion of your budget, if you plan early and book in advance, you can score deals on both your accommodations and lift tickets at Big Sky Resort. For even more savings on lift tickets, which cost more when demand is high, visit on weekdays in early December and opt to ski later in the day to cut down on fees for the popular Lone Peak Tram.

winter travel 2023

Winter in Banff is characterized by snow and skiing. This Canadian destination enjoys excellent skiing conditions with exceptional scenery. What's more, lodging and lift ticket prices are a bargain compared to other ski spots in North America, but you'll need to book them a few months in advance to ensure availability and the best prices. With the money you've saved, you can treat yourself to a sleigh ride or an extra après-ski drink. Though you'll need to purchase a National Park Pass to stay in Banff; this fee also covers access to off-slope wonders like Lake Louise, where you can skate and admire ice sculptures.

winter travel 2023

Thanks to its location in the Caribbean Sea, Martinique offers ideal weather for travelers seeking a warm respite from chilly winters. Temperatures sit in the 80s throughout winter, so you can spend your days soaking up some sun on Les Salines and Diamant (Diamond) beaches. If you plan on staying in Fort-de-France, the country's capital, book early to ensure you snag affordable accommodations during Martinique's peak tourist season. For additional savings, book a hotel farther inland.

winter travel 2023

Gatlinburg, Tennessee's wintertime highs sit in the upper 40s and low 50s, meaning you can still take advantage of the town's most popular attraction: Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After entering the national park, which charges a $5 daily parking fee, hike a section of the famous Appalachian Trail to Charlies Bunion, an outcrop with stunning mountain vistas, or trek the Rainbow Falls Trail for a chance to see the path's namesake falls frozen over. When you need to warm up, head back to town to sample the local moonshine at Sugarlands Distilling Company or Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine's "The Holler" distillery for a small fee.

7. Glance At Giant Lenin Head

Statue of Giant Lenin Head

Image Source Now, this may seem weird to some people, but one of the most famous statues in Russia is the Giant Lenin Head. Displayed at Ulan Ude, this is the tallest depiction of the leader ever shown, as the head towers 25 feet above the ground. Weirdly, this is one of the most popular places for newlyweds to take pictures, though that logic may be a bit flawed. Seeing this place in winter is even more worthwhile, as the head is often decorated with a hat of fresh snow.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

winter travel 2023

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

The least fun part of a snow-season getaway is dragging your two sets of skis from the frozen tarmac to the resort, dodging black ice and kicking up road salt along the way. These travel tools will take the bite out of the winter schlep, whether it’s across town or across the globe.

How We Test

We invited a small army of our loyal testers and veteran gearheads to help us put these travel essentials through their paces. That meant 65 powderhounds from varying backgrounds and ability levels, ranging in age from 23 to 53, drove hundreds of miles, transited through dozens of airports, summited mountains and skied back down them, hiked glaciers, and descended slot canyons. Then they packed up all their gear and headed back to the airport, train station, or snow-covered road to fill out feedback forms back at home. Only the very best travel gear survived the season of international, ice-crusted abuse and made it into this roundup.

Reviews: The Best Luggage for Winter Adventure Travel of 2023

Osprey fairview/farpoint 70l travel backpack ($230).

Osprey Women's Fairview/Farpoint 70L Travel Backpack

Buy the Fairview Buy the Far Point

Hauling a week’s worth of gear on your back is no easy feat, but the Fairview (Farpoint is the men’s-specific version) travel pack performed the best of all the packs we tried. As in Osprey’s banner backpacking rucksacks, the Fairview/Farpoint has a frame suspension that transfers weight from the harness to the hip belt. Testers noted that it didn’t feel heavy, even while running through airports or between train platforms loaded up with camera gear and electronics.

The pack also makes light work of organizing gear with easy access and thoughtful features: A large main compartment panel zipper was key when trying to access goods without having to unpack the entire bag on a ferry dock, and a zippered rear flap stows the hip belt and shoulder straps for easy bag-checking. When you arrive at your destination, the backmost portion of the main body zips off to use as a day pack (it even has its own lockable laptop sleeve). Engineered with lightweight, recycled, bluesign-approved 210-denier nylon and 600-denier packcloth, the Fairview withstood shoving, slinging, tossing, and thrashing from backpacking and careless baggage handlers.

Bottom Line: A feature-laden pack for every possible outcome while adventure-traveling.

Dakine Fall Line Hardside Roller Bag ($300)

Dakine Fall Line Hardside Roller Bag

Whether you’re a touring purist or a resort regular, you’ve likely spent a lot of money on your set-up—so protect it. Made with 100 percent recycled ABS and polycarbonate shell material, this hard-sided roller can hold two pairs of skis (up to 190 centimeters), two poles, one pair of boots, and a few pairs of puffies and ski pants. After years of seeing ski bags turn up damaged in baggage claim, we appreciated the extra protection that comes from the laminated foam interior and anchor straps to keep your gear from shifting inside. Testers also lauded the Fall Line’s oversized wheels and grab handles, which made for easy maneuvering. Thanks to a connecting handle, you can pair this bag with non-matching rolling luggage for easier, one-handed shuttling. It has a TSA-approved combo lock for added security, and tie-down passthrough points so you can attach it to your vehicle’s rooftop crossbars.

Bottom Line: Seriously secure armor for your precious ski or snowboard gear, with practical touches that make for easy hauling.

Thule Aion Carry On Spinner ($349)

Thule Aion Carry On Spinner

Thule ’s Aion Carry-On Spinner is tailor-made for transitioning from ice-packed gravel parking lots to the airport. We rolled this 36-liter carry-on and its rugged oversized wheels through snow, mud, and sand, pushing the limits of its capacity without broken wheels, soiled fabric, or snagged zippers. The shell, fabric, lining, and mesh are made of water-resistant 100 percent recycled waxed polyester canvas fabric, with a polycarbonate back panel (50 percent recycled) that sheds snow and slush. For hurried exits, a removable compression packing cube with a TPU lining separates dirty gear from the rest of the bag. This came in particularly handy when contending with sweaty clothes after a big day in Idaho’s Sawtooths followed by heading straight to the airport, while others found its transparent material useful for finding toiletries. A large zip down the front offers easy access to a jacket in transitional moments, while a smaller front zip holds keys, phone, and wallet.

Bottom Line: A go-anywhere carry-on that transitions from the backcountry to the frontcountry and beyond.

Thule SnowPack M Ski/Snowboard Rack ($330)

Thule SnowPack M Ski/Snowboard Rack

This medium-sized ski and snowboard carrier is the best value for the money lightweight rack we tested thanks to its accessibility and gas-saving design. The SnowPack’s 20-inch clamp securely carries up to four pairs of skis or two snowboards (or two skis and a snowboard). Extra soft rubber arms protect fragile surfaces, and a locking option keeps your high-ticket gear safe while you après. It fits with Thule’s crossbar sets, round bars, and most factory racks so you can attach it to almost any setup and it took two people about an hour to install. Beefy release buttons make it easy to open and close while wearing thick gloves. Thanks to its lightweight aluminum construction and low-profile aerodynamic design, we never felt (or heard) drag while driving up and down canyons or at high speeds on the freeway.

Bottom Line: Intuitive ski and snowboard carrier that won’t slow you down on the road.

Cotopaxi Allpa 60L Tote ($90)

Cotopaxi Allpa 60L Tote

This robust 60-liter tote is ideal for everything from ski and snowboard accessories to a week’s worth of groceries. Thanks to a zippered front pocket, gear loops, and interior organizational pockets, we hauled helmets, goggles, balaclavas, gloves, extra layers, snacks, and water bottles back and forth from the car to the ski lodge countless times. We also used it as a shopping bag around Vancouver, B.C.’s Whistler Village, and even carried bags of ice for our coolers at our end-of-season parking lot party at Utah’s Alta ski area . The nylon and polyester tote is made from factory remnant scraps and folds down to the size of a Jetboil stove.

Bottom Line: A robust, good-looking replacement for that decaying Ikea tote you’ve had in your trunk for a decade.

Mystery Ranch District 24 Backpack ($165)

Mystery Ranch District 24 Backpack

The District 24 is a casual, lifestyle-oriented daypack with impressive carrying chops—and without the overengineering characteristic of many other small hiking bags. It has two, padded sleeves large enough to hold a laptop and tablet, a large internal compartment for stashing bulky hard drives and headphone cases, and various smaller internal organizational pockets for dongles, cords, and a mouse. Interior water bottle pockets on either side of the pack and dual stretch woven external pockets that are big enough for a 16-ounce Hydroflask but not a standard Nalgene bottle.

Despite this lifestyle focus, the District 24 has load-lifters that allowed our testers to haul heavy spellbooks and magic cloaks in Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Open-cell foam-padded breathable shoulder straps and body panels made the District 24 a comfortable carry while hustling between gates, but we would probably switch to a different pack for working up a sweat while hiking. Extremely durable Cordura Recor—a super yarn that’s made entirely of reclaimed pre-consumer waste—survived tossing, shoving, and dragging without a scratch.

Bottom Line: A heavy hauler with everyday carry features.

Fjällräven Tree-Kånken Pocket ($45)

Fjällräven Tree-Kånken Pocket

The Tree-Kånken is perfect for those awkward moments when you don’t have quite enough pocket space but don’t want to strap a fanny to your waist. The five-by-eight-inch pouch has a zippered one-liter main compartment that’s big enough to hold keys, wallet, lip balm, and even an oversized iPhone. The smaller zippered front pocket can fit small, flat, easy-to-lose things like credit cards, room keys, and tickets. It works by itself as a shoulder sling and also pairs with the classic Kånken backpack with a loop and snap button system. It’s made from 100 percent lyocell sourced entirely from pine trees in Sweden.

Bottom Line: A hyper-functional fanny pack replacement with eco-cred.

Pakmule Sway-Back with Porch Package ($1,280)

Pakmule Sway-Back with Porch Package

Deluxe winter tailgating demands a serious front-porch setup. This fully-welded hitch carrier weighs just 42 pounds but adds a whopping 12 feet of storage space and 500 pounds of cargo-carrying capacity to the back of your vehicle. One tester who attached it to his camper and took it to a remote area near Robbers Roost, Utah, was impressed by its handling and durability thanks to a locking, threaded anti-wobble mechanism for rough roads and rustproof, 70 percent-recycled aluminum construction. Bonus: An optional set of “Stirrup” stairs ($125) offers easy access to your backcountry porch.

Bottom Line: Looking to out-tailgate all the other campers and trucks? Slap an off-road-friendly porch on the back of your mobile home.

However, you must know the most interesting of the city center: these are the new Zariadié park and the Gorky park.

Pay attention to the temperatures! Long walks can be quickly difficult to hold, if you are not well equipped. Especially if temperatures drop to -10 and above. Further informations about how to dress for Moscow winter below.

The snow-covered Zariadye Park and its platform suspended in the air offer a beautiful view of the Kremlin and the Moskva River. The park area is open 24 hours a day and free. In addition, for 180 RUB you can visit an artistic installation: the ice cave (hours 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.).

The Gorky park is very large, it runs along the Moskva to the Mont des Moineaux. Besides, Gorky Park is a park to visit in summer and winter. If you go to Moscow in December, January or February, inside the park you will find small stands where you can buy hot drinks to warm up, cafes to rest and a museum of modern art Garage, and then an ice rink! Warm wine and tea are not enough to warm you up? Now is the time to try the Russian bania! It’s clearly an experience to do in Moscow in winter. Moscow winter would not be so cold for you! Finishing a day of walking in the snowy city with a traditional bania, there is nothing better.

What is the bania? In summary, the Russian bania is a hot steam bath. It’s an ancient tradition that dates back to the time of Peter the Great. Bania enthusiast, he then zero-rated the construction of the banias. They then multiplied everywhere in Russia. In the countryside, the bania is a small wooden house. In town, the place is apparently different from the outside, but the principle remains the same. The steam warms our bodies, the pores are cleaned, we wash … then we pat ourselves with the venik, a broom of dry birch branches! It wakes up, for sure!

Salduny baths is an institution. With over 200 years of history, they are the largest and most popular baths in Moscow. However, there are Women and Men sections. To be able to stay together, you must then reserve a private banya.

Things to do Moscow blog

How to dress for Moscow winter?

To know how to dress for Moscow winter and Russian winter in general, you can use my Russian grandmother’s golden rule (who lived on Novaya Zemlya Island in Russia). You have to cover the strategic places to be warm. That is, clothes and shoes in winter in Russia must protect the extremities of the body as much as possible, then the throat and buttocks. It is quite the same in Canada I guess.

Three important things for how to dress for Moscow winter:

  • Undershirts are very important. They shouldn’t be wide, they should stick to your skin.
  • Hooded coats
  • High shoes with a thick and gripping sole

What to enjoy Moscow winter: in summary

As we have seen, Moscow is therefore transformed during the winter into a magical place: decorations, snow, evening lights, ice rink … Indeed, everything is there for New Year’s Day, the most important holiday in Russia. So let’s take advantage of this winter and its magic to the fullest: Red Square Christmas market, skating rink, walk in the snowy parks!

If you are leaving during the holiday season, this blog post will certainly be useful for you: Christmas and New Year in Moscow .

It's the first day of winter: What is the seasonal weather outlook for Delaware?

Winter solstice is here − not only the shortest day and longest night of the year, but also the first day of winter.

Thursday, Dec. 21, marks the beginning of longer days and shorter nights.

With the beginning of winter, many may be wondering: How much snow will we get this year?

Last winter, Delaware barely received any snow, but predictions say it may be somewhat of the opposite this winter.

Although Delaware has already had some snow flurries, here are the predictions for how winter is supposed to go this season.

The 2023-24 Farmers' Almanac

Since 1818, the Farmers' Almanac has predicted the seasons ahead of the United States. This year's winter outlook , titled "The BRRR is Back!," might give a clue into how winter is predicted to go this season.

The forecast , which is based on astronomical and mathematical formulas, predicts "below-average temperatures and lots of snowstorms, sleet, ice, rain for much of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Midwest areas of the country, as well as central and northern New England, especially in January and February."

According to their map, Delaware is expected to have a frosty, flaky and slushy winter.

Will Delaware have a white Christmas?

The possibility is looking quite slim in terms of a white Christmas for Delaware .

The forecast's high temperature is predicted to be near 49 degrees in New Castle County, according to the National Weather Service .

There is a chance of rain on Christmas night, however, so those celebrating should be on the lookout for that.

When is the last day of winter?

For those who do not enjoy cold weather and are looking for the end of winter as it starts, many may be wondering, when is the last day of winter?

According to the Almanac , the astronomical start date of spring is Tuesday, March 19. The meteorological start date is Friday, March 1.

However, Delaware has a long way to go before the end is in sight.

Winter predictions from the Old Farmer's Almanac

Yes, there are two of them. However, the Old Farmer's Almanac claims they are older than the Farmers' Almanac, stating that they have been predicting the weather since 1792.

So, how much snow will Delaware get according to this?

The Atlantic corridor, which Delaware is included in, is predicted to have above-normal winter precipitation and snowfall with 2 to 3 inches above monthly averages.

In short, both almanacs gave somewhat similar predictions.

The NOAA seasonal forecast predicts warmer-than-average winter for Delaware

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's  Climate Prediction Center , a branch of the National Weather Service, releases three-month outlooks for weather in the U.S.

Though many predictions are in favor of a cold winter, the NOAA forecast still predicted a warmer-than-average season for Delaware .

Delaware is also expected to have greater-than-average wet conditions, as precipitation is expected to rise, according to the NOAA.

However, certain weather patterns cannot be predicted until more than one or two weeks before, such as the Arctic Oscillation, which can bring extreme cold temperatures across the central and eastern U.S. − including Delaware.

The Climate Prediction Center provides only probability forecasts for temperature and precipitation, which are predicted by looking at weather patterns like El Niño.

Our fitness experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute have evaluated treadmills for nearly a decade and have seen tremendous improvements in the space over the years. Not only do most treadmills fold today to maximize space when not in use, but several models offer "smart" features and guided classes so you can get an effective workout at home and save on an expensive gym membership. Our top picks for the best treadmills take into account every type of living space and every level of physical activity, focusing on high-quality performance, speed ranges, incline capabilities, substantial running belts and more. We're confident that our choices offer solutions for all different types of home gym setups and personal fitness needs.

You can learn more about how we evaluate treadmills — including tips for selecting the best treadmill for your home gym and what you should know before you buy one — at the end of this guide. Looking for even more compact choices? Check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills .

NordicTrack treadmills have performed well in our previous treadmill tests, and the Commercial 1750 is a reliable addition to any home gym. Let's start with the build: The sleek design offers solid construction and a substantial-sized running belt for comfortably running at speeds up to 12 mph. You'll also get access to thousands of iFIT workouts with this machine (30-day trial included, with a $39/month charge after that for access to iFIT), including scenic runs through breathtaking destinations around the world with seasoned instructors. What's more, the treadmill offers incline and decline capabilities to simulate outdoor terrain and can be automatically controlled and adjusted by your iFIT trainer during the workout.

The 14-inch touchscreen is big enough to provide an immersive experience, especially during those scenic runs, and pivots and tilts so you can complement your sessions with strength training exercises for runners and other classes off the machine. But if you're looking for an even bigger screen, the Commercial 2450 model offers a robust 22-inch touchscreen at a steeper price (though the models both ultimately have very similar features which is why we chose to spotlight the 1750 instead since it comes at a more affordable price).

Another useful feature is that the Commercial 1750 does fold slightly upright, which can allow you to make room for other fitness equipment when the treadmill isn't in use. At a decent price point, this model offers a solid build and sleek design with smart capabilities that made it worthy of our best overall spot.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 Auto Incline Treadmill

Coming in at a very affordable price point compared to most treadmills on the market, this option from Sunny Health & Fitness is a solid choice for walking or light jogging. Those tight on space will appreciate that this machine is foldable too, with a soft drop hydraulic mechanism which the company says is designed to help the deck gently lower itself to the floor.

The console is complete with a digital monitor and tracks metrics like time, distance, speed and calories burned on the LCD screen. You can take advantage of 12 built-in programs for some workout guidance too. This treadmill also includes pulse sensors and dual water bottle holders to hydrate through those longer runs. While this treadmill won’t endure fast runs (it only goes up to a max of 8 mph), I like that it has a display where the push of a button will quickly adjust your speed.

This truly is one of the most affordable automatic incline treadmills on the market, so if you're a beginner or looking for a low-budget investment then this pick is a great option. But just keep in mind that it is more ideal for walking, incline walking and light jogging since the speed capabilities are limited to 8 mph, and the running belt isn't as long as others on our list. The weight capacity itself is also on the lower side, and while I did find the machine fairly sturdy, this is something to take note of.

Run at speeds up to 12 mph and 15 incline levels with the F63 Treadmill from Sole Fitness. The moderately priced treadmill features a great marriage of useful features like a 6.5-inch LCD display that notes metrics including speed, incline, time, distance, calories and pace . It's chest-strap compatible and features pulse grips, too.

You can work out with seven built-in standard programs, but if you want to stream running and walking classes on your preferred fitness platform , you can place your tablet in the dedicated tablet holder on the console. Plus, there is a USB port for charging and Bluetooth audio speakers.

For the money, I feel it's a solid treadmill that provides a decent amount for the value and a nice-sized running belt. It does accommodate higher speeds and a substantial incline range as well, making it great for beginners and intermediate runners. Plus, I liked that the tablet holder is at eye level for viewing, which is a small feature but can make a big difference during your runs so you can keep your neck in a neutral position and not have to look down. You won't find tons of high-end features on this pick, but it's a great basic treadmill to keep you active at home and at the right price point where it's a quality investment.

The spacious running deck and sturdy frame on this newer model from Horizon Fitness has everything avid runners will need in a treadmill. Designed for performance, the 7.4 AT is thoughtfully made with advanced Bluetooth features, on-board media controls, a tablet holder and a rapid charging port.

During our tests, we found the speed changes to be seamless, allowing you to sprint with just the swipe of a palm. The QuickDial controls simplify those speed and incline adjustments (up to a whopping 15%) and are intuitive to use without having to break your stride, making it perfect for interval training. The dial on the right rolls forward to increase speed and back to decrease speed, and the dial on the left rolls forward to increase incline and back to decrease incline. "Felt very sturdy and wasn't loud, and it also felt very secure," a tester commented. "It had great handles to hold onto to get your heart rate and to hold on if going up a high incline too."

Another added bonus: The 7.4 AT is foldable so you can save some space in your home workout area when it's not in use. The 7.0 model is also a favorite of ours with a few less features if you're looking for something at a lower price.

You'll find all the bells and whistles you'd expect (and more) from a high-end smart treadmill in the Bowflex Treadmill 22. The premium 22-inch HD touchscreen comes complete with JRNY content, and your membership is free for the first two months. But if you're looking for a more affordable option, I also tested out the Bowflex Treadmill 10 that has a smaller console but still did favorably in our tests thanks to all of its incredible special features.

The Treadmill 22 model has decline and incline capabilities to mimic real-life outdoor runs, as well as a speed range of up to 12 mph. It's also Bluetooth compatible so you can link certain smart devices and heart rate monitors. All of these premium features make this machine ideal for serious runners. Of all the treadmills we tested, this was by far my favorite with its solid build and longer and wider running belt compared to other competitors. But if you're a beginner or intermediate runner, you'll still be able to find a wide variety of appropriate class content and guidance through the JRNY platform.

This option is also great for the whole family, since JRNY gives you access to entertainment options as you run, like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu so you can watch your favorite shows and movies while getting a workout. "This machine has transformed my workouts," a tester said. "It's very high-end and makes half marathon training enjoyable when I can't get outside. Plus I can pass the time by streaming Hulu and my other favorite services for those longer runs which really helps." Another bonus is that the Treadmill 22 is foldable, so you can make room for other home gym equipment when it's not in use. But the product itself weighs a ton (336 pounds to be exact), so I highly recommend paying for expert assembly. It's an investment but one that will likely pay off to keep you and your family motivated to consistently exercise.

Other Treadmills We Tested and Liked

line break

  • Nordictrack EXP 7i : This foldable treadmill from NordicTrack is also worth mentioning. It has a solid build and goes up to 10 mph with an incline up to 12%. The smaller profile features a built-in EasyLift mechanism for storage, so you can fold it up when you're done with your run. However, it has a significantly smaller touchscreen than the 2450 or 1750 models, as well as a slightly shorter running belt and no decline capabilities. But for the price, it's a quality model that would work well for most joggers and runners.
  • Nordictrack Commercial X22i : Those looking for a serious incline on their walk or run can turn to the NordicTrack Commercial X22i , which wowed us with its 40% incline capability. Speeds go up to 12 mph and you'll get all the other high-end features, like a large 22-inch touchscreen, speed and incline auto-adjust and easy-to-access controls. The high price and intense incline aren't for everyone, but those looking to get a serious workout and mimic strenuous outdoor hikes and runs will appreciate all that the Commercial X22i has to offer. If you're looking for an even larger screen, the X32i offers an extra-large 32-inch HD smart touchscreen.
  • Peloton Tread+ : At a whopping $6K (plus a $44/month membership fee), Peloton's newest treadmill is a steep investment. But there's no denying its quality — the crystal-clear 32-inch tilting touchscreen provides for an immersive workout experience and the Peloton instructors are some of the best in the industry. The sturdiness of the model is best-in-class too. The 67-inch running belt is one of the longest we have seen, and you can level up your workouts with "free mode" where you can manually move the treadmill by the force of your feet. But it's important to note that after Peloton's Tread and Tread+ were both recalled back in 2021 following 70 injuries and one child death, the brand has since implemented new safety mechanisms on the models. Ultimately, I feel that the Bowflex Treadmill 22 offers similar capabilities and smart features for a fraction of the price which is why that model was spotlighted in our top picks.

We had previously tested models from Proform and Xterra that we liked and recommended but are currently out of stock. We do plan to test updated models from the brands within the coming months.

How we test the best treadmills

line break

The fitness and tech experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute test sports equipment ranging from e-bikes to exercise bikes and rowing machines .

We vet treadmills for ease of use, performance and safety. For this roundup, we featured treadmills that we’ve personally tested, newer units of similar models we've evaluated, equipment from reliable brands that have tested well in the past and top-selling products whose specifications we’ve reviewed. All in all, we've tested over 30 different treadmill models over the years. We even send the units to testers across the nation for real-life feedback on functionality and performance.

sassos testing treadmills at the good housekeeping institute

We looked for options to meet every type of fitness level and home gym environment, whether you're looking for an advanced treadmill with all of the special features to support a serious (yet fun!) run or a compact foldable option. We also included budget-friendly options that still provide an effective workout. Our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were but that mid-tier options still performed well. If you're looking for a more compact option, you can check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills too.

What to look for when shopping for a treadmill

line break

A treadmill that fits into your budget is most important, and our top picks have a wide range of price options to choose from. There are a few other important factors you'll want to take into account too.

sassos testing out the running belt on a horizon fitness treadmill

✔️ Size: Pay close attention to the dimensions of your treadmill so it’s guaranteed to fit your space. Keep in mind that most treadmills have an incline feature so you'll want to have at least a foot of clearance above your height on the treadmill to the ceiling. Some brands will let you know how much clearance is needed. In addition to size, double-check the treadmill’s maximum weight capacity to ensure you can use it safely.

✔️ Running belt: Make sure that the length of the running track is at least 4 feet long. If you’re over 6 feet tall, then the belt size should be even longer — around 4.5 feet. Running on a belt that's too short for your body may put you at risk of injury.

sassos testing out treadmills in the good housekeeping institute

✔️ Speed: Some treadmills can go up to 12 mph or more, while others have a max speed closer to 8 mph. If you plan on running quickly, always double-check your treadmill’s max speed setting.

✔️ Incline/decline: Being able to adjust the incline on your walk or run is one of the best ways to replicate an outdoor environment. Some newer models even offer decline capabilities to mimic real-life terrain. I recommend walking instead of running on the decline setting when possible to help protect your joints.

sassos folding the nordictrack 1750 commercial treadmill

✔️ Folding capability: Many treadmills on the market now offer some sort of folding feature, which can help save space when the treadmill is not in use. But not all foldable treadmills are created equal — some can collapse to the point where they can fit under a bed, whereas others simple fold upright for a bit more storage space. Most of the treadmills on this list do the latter, but if you're looking for super compact options our best foldable treadmills list features a nice variety of choices. In our tests though, I've noticed that the more foldable a treadmill is the less sturdy it tends to be.

✔️ Warranty: Check the treadmill’s warranty and prioritize products with a longer offering, especially for key parts like the motor or frame.

sassos accepting delivery of bowflex treadmill for testing

✔️ Special features: Features such as a touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth speakers and any other advanced settings will likely cost you extra. Decide whether you'll be satisfied with an LED display with standard buttons and controls or if you’d be happier with preset programs or a built-in screen offering on-demand workouts or training.

✔️ Set-up and delivery: Treadmills can be heavy and difficult to set up alone. Most offer options for expert assembly, but that typically comes with an additional fee. If you do plan to assemble the treadmill on your own, consider recruiting a handy friend or two to help. If you plan to move the treadmill to a basement or small room in your home, double-check that the dimensions will fit through narrow hallways and around tight corners.

What do I need to know before buying a treadmill?

line break

Double-check the weight capacity and dimensions to ensure the treadmill is the right fit for you and any other individuals who will be regularly using it. There also needs to be sufficient clearance around and above the treadmill (especially keep this in mind if you plan to workout on an incline). And double-check installation and if it is included or an additional fee — treadmills are typically heavy and complex to assemble on your own, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend or opt to have the company assemble it professionally in your home (often for an added fee).

What is the average life of a treadmill?

line break

There is no simple answer since this ultimately takes into account several factors, but the industry standard is roughly 7 to 10 years . If you take close care of your machine and perform regular maintenance on it then it may last even longer. Daily use will wear down the belt and may cause the machine to "age" faster. Check the company's warranty to see what they cover, as you may just need to simply replace a certain part instead of having to get a whole new machine altogether.

Are more expensive treadmills better?

line break

The phrase "you get what you pay for" isn't always true, but our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were . That's because more expensive models tend to offer additional special features, such as smart capabilities, on-demand workouts, streaming options and more. They also tend to be more substantial machines with a higher weight capacity and solid running belt. You'll even find certain models with significant incline ranges and the ability to decline. But if you don't need all of those bells and whistles, the more affordable options on our list are still high-quality with decent speed and incline ranges that will make for an effective workout.

13 Best Places To Go in the Winter, From Ski Resorts to Sunny Beaches

These are the top cold- and warm-weather destinations around the United States.

winter travel 2023

Danny Wilson / 500px / Getty Images

A winter vacation is a great cure for the letdown that often comes after the holidays and the "winter blahs" that can set in as the season stretches on. Yet everyone has a different idea of what makes a perfect winter vacation. Some want to ski or at least savor all that goes with a snowy environment — think cozy fireplaces, hot cocoa, mulled wine, crisp air, and mountains draped in white. Others want to avoid the cold at all costs, lounge in the sun, and swim in warm tropical waters.

To help you decide what kind of trip is right for you, here's a look at our top 13 winter vacation ideas for destinations around the United States. These are our favorite places to go in the winter, whether you're looking for the perfect winter wonderland or you prefer sandy beaches to snowy mountains.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Tenley Thompson / iStockphoto / Getty Images

With an average 458 inches of snowfall each year, the ski resorts here — in particular, the popular  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King Mountain — attract lovers of the sport. You'll also find other winter-weather activities like snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and backcountry skiing. Snowcoach tours to nearby Yellowstone National Park make it possible to explore the area in a warm, comfortable vehicle, offering access to Old Faithful, bubbling mud pots, and wildlife. For another exciting winter adventure, snowmobile tours are offered in Yellowstone and, even closer, Grand Teton National Park.

St. Louis, Missouri

With daytime temperatures often hovering in the 40s, winter in St. Louis might seem downright mild to some residents of chillier cities. If it feels too cold to be outside, though, there's plenty to do indoors. The palatial St. Louis Art Museum , founded in 1879 and moved to its current home during the 1904 World's Fair, is one of the country's premier museums. Visitors can also ride a tram to the top of the Gateway Arch , the tallest human-made monument in the United States at 630 feet, for a spectacular view of the city.

St. George, Utah

Sara Edwards / iStockphoto / Getty Images

A four-hour scenic drive from Salt Lake City (or a two-hour drive from Las Vegas ), St. George offers an appealingly mild desert climate. Though nights can be chilly, daytime temperatures here typically reach into the 50s or even low 60s during the winter months. The historic downtown features a number of interesting museums, galleries, restaurants, and cafes. About an hour away, spectacular Zion National Park is open all year, with hiking and mountain biking trails. Just 15 minutes from St. George, Snow Canyon State Park — with red rock mountains, horseback riding, and gorgeous scenery — seldom sees snow, despite its name.

Louisville, Kentucky

Known for the Kentucky Derby, the Bourbon Trail, the Louisville Slugger baseball bat, and great food , Louisville offers a bevy of indoor attractions and lots of bourbon to keep you warm. Set on the Ohio River along the Indiana border, the city rarely sees snow or freezing temperatures — but if its highs in the 40s and 50s are too chilly for you, you'll still find plenty to do. The Kentucky Derby Museum explores the history of the annual thoroughbred horse race, while the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory will appeal to baseball fans. Bourbon connoisseurs, meanwhile, will want to check out all the nearby distilleries .

Palm Springs, California

About a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles, this charming desert city enjoys warm winter temperatures and is home to golf courses, spas, casinos, and nearby hot springs. Trendy restaurants, boutique hotels, resorts, and elegant shops offer something for everyone — and there are options if you prefer outdoor pursuits, too. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway provides spectacular views en route to the snow-capped peaks of the San Jacinto Mountains, while Joshua Tree National Park (located about an hour away) boasts extraordinary rock formations, cacti, and starry night skies.

Key West, Florida

As the southernmost point in the continental U.S., Key West is a perfect destination for travelers in search of winter sun. Winter temperatures in the 70s, centuries of history, and world-class water sports all attract tourists, as does the chance to take one of America's most scenic road trips — the roughly 3.5-hour drive across the 42 bridges that connect Key West to Miami. Diving and snorkeling among the coral reefs are popular activities during the day, while in the evening, lively Duval Street offers a Caribbean-style ambience and a host of great restaurants and bars. Historic architecture, the Key West City Cemetery , and the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum are among the most-visited attractions in this quirky city.

Burlington, Vermont

Located in northwestern Vermont on the shore of Lake Champlain, Burlington is one of the best places to go in the winter if you like snow. Several popular ski resorts lie within an hour of the city, including Stowe , Smugglers' Notch , and Bolton Valley . Downtown Burlington, meanwhile, boasts shops, restaurants, microbreweries, live music venues, and the charming Church Street Marketplace . When you're ready to turn in for the night, Vermont's largest city offers a variety of cozy bed-and-breakfasts and chic hotels.

Sun Valley, Idaho

If you want to ski in the tracks of old Hollywood royalty this winter, Sun Valley is the place for you. Sun Valley Resort was founded in 1936, and from the beginning drew celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable to ski in style, earning it a reputation as the birthplace of destination skiing. Today, the resort offers 2,400 skiable acres spread across two mountains, plus a popular snow sports school . Non-skiers can check out the other winter activities available — from ice skating and snow biking to snowmobiling and sleigh rides — or visit the town, which boasts a range of dining spots, live music venues, and coffee shops.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Richard Cummins / Lonely Planet Images / Getty Images

Travelers who like to spend their winters enjoying indoor attractions will find much to enjoy in Pittsburgh . Art lovers can take in The Andy Warhol Museum (the artist was born and raised in Pittsburgh) and the Carnegie Museum of Art , founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1895. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History , meanwhile, boasts exhibits that both entertain and educate. Pittsburgh's dining scene is growing, with dozens of restaurants, cafes, breweries, and modern food halls to enjoy. Local favorites like pierogies, kielbasa, and a sandwich from Primanti Bros. should definitely be on your food agenda.

Sarasota, Florida

Thousands of snowbirds flock to Sarasota every winter, and with temperatures in the 70s, white-sand beaches, and a thriving cultural scene, it's easy to see why. Travelers of any age will relish the chance to gather seashells or splash in the warm Gulf waters, while, in town, a wide array of shops and galleries offer hours of browsing. Other highlights include the city's extensive collection of midcentury modern architecture and The Ringling complex, which boasts an impressive art museum and a museum of circus history, among other attractions.

South Padre Island, Texas

With temperatures in the 60s, winter is a pleasant season on this small barrier island off the southern Texas coast. The area is a haven for nature lovers, with outdoor attractions like the Laguna Madre Nature Trail and the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary , which includes a five-story viewing tower. The Original Dolphin Watch  and  Breakaway Cruises offer dolphin tours, while Sea Turtle Inc. runs a turtle rescue and rehab center where visitors can get up close to the critters year-round. Boating, fishing, and kiteboarding are popular activities as well, and you'll find plenty of fresh local seafood, including oysters, red snapper, and flounder.

Asheville, North Carolina

Winters are mild in this city in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Hikers can access trails throughout the season, while those seeking winter sports will find ski slopes nearby. Asheville offers quirky galleries, museums, and some of the country's best restaurants , and this is an ideal time to explore them all with minimal crowds. There's no shortage of history here, either. The 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail features bronze sculptures depicting figures and events from the city's past, while Biltmore — the sprawling Vanderbilt estate and mansion — offers guided tours that give visitors a glimpse into the Asheville of the Gilded Age.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Ample sunshine, beautiful beaches , brilliant sunsets, and graceful palm trees beckon travelers to Hawaii during the chilly months. Oahu , in particular, is one of the best places to go in the winter, thanks to temperatures that hover around 80 degrees and attractions that range from snorkeling and big-wave surfing to luxury shopping in the boutiques of Honolulu. Visit Iolani Palace to explore the only royal castle in the U.S., and learn all about Hawaiian history at the Bishop Museum or the Polynesian Cultural Center , which is located an hour outside the city on Oahu's scenic North Shore .

News & features, winter center, news / weather news, noaa: global greenhouse gases continued steady climb in 2023.

By Mike Heuer, UPI

Published Apr 9, 2024 6:53 AM PDT | Updated Apr 9, 2024 6:53 AM PDT

A new study released by NOAA found that greenhouse gases trapped 49% more heat in 2021 than in 1990.

April 6 (UPI) -- Despite efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, 2023 saw another steady increase in the amount recorded in the Earth's atmosphere, according to a new report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The three gases most attributed to human causes, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide, didn't increase as rapidly as in recent years but rather were on par with "steep increases observed during the past decade," NOAA scientists  said in the report .

"We still have a lot of work to do to make meaningful progress in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere," said Vanda Grubisic, director of the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, which collects and analyzes air samples.

CO2 is considered the most impactful of greenhouse gases, according to scientists.

NOAA laboratory analysis shows the global surface concentration of CO2 increased by 2.8 parts per million to an average of 419.3 ppm during 2023. The 12-month average of 419.3 ppm is about 50% higher than estimated for pre-industrial CO2 levels.

winter travel 2023

NOAA figures show consistent growth of C02 and other greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. (Credit: NOAA)

Last year was the 12th consecutive year global surface concentrations grew by more than 2 ppm, which is the longest sustained rate of CO2 increases in NOAA's 65 years of monitoring.

The agency hadn't recorded three consecutive years of CO2 increases of at least 2 ppm before 2014. The federal agency began tracking global greenhouse gas levels in 1959.

CO2 emissions in 2020 showed  reduced outputs  because of lower energy demands due to lockdowns imposed by the global  COVID-19  pandemic, the International Energy Agency reported.

Methane also grew in 2023, reaching an average of 1,922.6 parts per billion, up 10.9 ppb from 2022 but lower than a record increase of 15.2 ppb in 2020, according to NOAA.

The federal agency says atmospheric methane levels are 160% higher than pre-industrial levels.

The NOAA says nitrous oxide is the "third-most significant human-caused greenhouse gas" and increased by 1 ppb to 336.7 ppb in 2023.

Nitrogen fertilizer and manure used in agriculture are the primary sources of human-caused methane, which is 25% higher than the pre-industrial level of 270 ppb.

The NOAA's Global Monitoring Laboratory collected and analyzed more than 15,000 global air samples at monitoring stations located around the world.

Locations providing the NOAA with air samples include 53 cooperative sampling locations around the world, 20 tall-tower sites and airports in North America.
