Old Town is one of the nicest parts of Albufeira. Keep in mind that central Albufeira is not a huge place. It was, after all, just a sleepy fishing village before tourism grew into the resort city it is today.

That being said, the beaches around the town do sprawl outward quite a bit. To the east, the area around Praia dos Aveiros is also a very nice part of Portugal Albufeira.

Where do boat trips leave from in Albufeira?

Almost all Albufeira tours by boat leave from the Albufeira Marina. The marina is located west of the city.

tour operators going to algarve

It would take about 30 minutes to walk there from Old Town, or you could get an Uber for the ride, which will take about 10 minutes.

How do you get around Albufeira without a car?

There are many ways of getting around Albufeira without a car. You can get around Albufeira by foot, on public buses, or by Uber or taxi. You can even take a tuk-tuk 🛺 .

If you’re sticking with things to do in Albufeira old town, you won’t need a car and can easily walk around to see the main sights.

The public buses are run by EVA Transportes and can connect you to many of the beaches, as well as other towns nearby. Ubers are also easily booked and usually arrive quickly. Prices can creep up quite a bit during high season, though.

How far is the old town Albufeira from the new town Albufeira?

The distance from the old town Albufeira to the new town (the area around The Strip) is about 3 kilometers or just under two miles.

tour operators going to algarve

If you walked, it would take you around 40 minutes. The drive is around 10 minutes, or you can take a bus , which is about 20-30 minute s, depending on your route.

Can you swim in the sea in Albufeira?

YES —  You can absolutely swim in the sea in Albufeira.

During the spring through the early autumn, the water temperature is comfortable, and the blazing sun definitely encourages a dip. Even in the winter ❄️, the bravest visitors may still like to go for a swim (even if they do decide to use a wetsuit).

🏊 It is largely safe to swim in Albufeira , and many beaches have lifeguards during the high season, but keep in mind that tides can get strong as you move away from the shore.

Travel Guide To Algarve

Ilha da Fuseta in Faro Portugal

Where to stay in The Algarve

Vila Joya Portugal

Just like a private home – it’s been run by the same German family for 40 years – Vila Joya’s interiors are designed for day-time flopping: big cream linen sofas, cane furniture, an expansive library and a huge stone dining table, where a lovely selection of breakfast treats is laid out every morning, all create the impression that you’re staying with your very chic Portuguese godmother for a long weekend . Set on a hillside overlooking the sea, Vila Joya has direct access to the beach below, with terraced gardens fragrant with roses and herbs leading down to a pool, and lawns with pairs of sun-loungers conveniently spaced far enough apart from fellow guests.

Vila Joya Sea Portugal

The pool café with charcoal grill will rustle up fresh fish with deliciously charred skin served with a tomato salad and crushed new potatoes drowned in peppery olive oil and garlic in double-quick time, all washed down with a bottle of pale local rosé. Step just beyond the gardens to the shoreline for lunch at Vila Joya Sea: this white wooden shack with huge droopy straw blinds and a ceiling strung with washing lines hung with chef’s whites and tea-towels that gently flap in the sea breeze serves a largely Japanese menu. Ozone-fresh sushi and sashimi, generous poké bowls with meltingly tender salmon marinated in four-year-old aged soy, and the best curly fries make for a delicious pit-stop. But for true foodies the two-Michelin-starred restaurant back at the main house is the real reason to check into Vila Joya.

Vila Joya Sea Portugal

Run by Austrian chef Dieter Koschina, who has maintained his rating for 20 years, it has a lunch and dinner menu that changes daily, such is the high count of repeat customers. The menu is a geographical road-trip: classic French cooking – beef with a rich tangy red wine sauce and white asparagus – is counterbalanced by Mexican sharpness in a snapper ceviche that jolts you awake after the beef’s soporific syrup-ness. And to drink? The two bartenders, who look like they’ve just stepped out of a Brooklyn speakeasy, will blend you such mood-lifters as the Boa Vista with Leblon Cachaça, passion fruit, home-made Falernum and lime. With a belly full of arguably the best cooking along this stretch of coastline, and the crashing of the Atlantic waves just a few metres away, you’ll be hard pressed not to succumb to a well-earned siesta. +351 289 591 795; vilajoya.com

Casa Mae Algarve Portugal

Lagos is a proper seaside town less than an hour’s drive from Faro, with cobbled streets as shiny as mother-of-pearl. A water taxi ferries passengers across the inlet to the marina and Meia Praia, a 4km lick of gently curving sand. It was this that French-born, London-based former investment banker Veronique Polaert first fell in love with on a road trip through Portugal in 2014. She upped sticks, bought a dilapidated house inside the old town walls and spent the next two years turning it into this low-key hotel.

Of the 30 rooms, the best are the five in the original building (plus the three cabanas in the vegetable garden), which mix contemporary and colonial: vintage furniture and an oversized mirror propped against the wall in one; a record player and a pair of palm-tree-print armchairs by a sea-facing Juliet balcony in another. The rest – simpler in style but equally charming – are in the new, low-rise main house, alongside the farm-to-table Orta restaurant and bar, and a lifestyle store where all the stock is made in Portugal.

A bathroom at Casa Mae Algarve Portugal

It’s a theme that runs throughout, from the traditional floor tiles in the lobby to the abstract blue-pink rugs that hang as tapestries, and the shampoo-filled stoneware pots by local ceramicist Ricardo Lopes. At the back there’s a sun-trap terrace where staff serve huge glasses of rosé and petiscos (small sharing plates) of tuna sashimi and beetroot salad. Guests are given a map of Polaert’s favourite nearby spots which include Mar d’Estórias, a rooftop bar in a former church, and a string of tiny coves and beaches. Casa Mae is an unexpected little starburst on the Algarve’s overblown coastline, a let’s-go-this-weekend hideaway. Double rooms from about £80; +351 282780080; casa-mae.com

ADEGA VILA LISA

A small whitewashed cottage with a blue painted border in a narrow village street houses what is probably the region's most interesting restaurant. It began 20-odd years ago with artist Jose Vila cooking up 'flavours of the Algarve ' for his friends. These meals became so popular and well-known that a restaurant evolved. Opening hours are organised to allow Vila time to paint, and his latest works decorate the restaurant. There is no menu, but a typical four courses might include an aromatic broth of cockles, octopus roasted with potatoes, lamb stewed with fresh peas and chickpea soup. Finally, an uncorked bottle of the local brandy, medronho , is placed before you with a selection of miniature Algarvian cakes. If you can finish all that, buy a painting to celebrate - or at least a copy of Vila's cookery book, which has luscious photographs. Booking essential. Open for dinner daily in July, August, September and on Saturday and Sunday the rest of the year. 52 Rua Francisco Bivar, Mexilhoeira Grande (+351 282 968 478, adegavilalisa.com )

JARDIM DAS OLIVEIRAS

It is worth a trip to this restaurant for the drive alone, which takes you up almost 900 metres, into cool mountains wooded with eucalyptus, olive and cork trees, offering glimpses of the terraced valleys below. With its wood ovens and open fireplaces, Jardin das Oliveiras specialises in mountain food. Among the rustic dishes on offer is Portuguese polenta, which comes sprinkled with aromatic herbs and studded with chunks of pork; spicy chourico cooked over a flame at your table; and a Monchique stew of cabbage, pork and sausages. The local wild boar is slow-cooked with mushrooms, and delicious black pork is grilled with olive oil and garlic and chopped into bite-size pieces that melt in your mouth. Finish with Monchique's traditional cake, bolo tacho , a combination of maize, chocolate, honey and egg. Sítio do Porto Seco, Monchique (+351 282 912 874; jardimdasoliveiras.com )

Clifffishing at Sagres

Things to do in The Algarve

Most tourists head to the same coastal strip in central Algarve, where developers seem determined to concrete over every last green space. For a real escape, the secret is to head to the deserted lagoons east of Faro, or head west to the untouched seaboard where Portugese explorers honed their skills before setting off to discover two thirds of the world; or inland to the pine-covered hills. There are also 88 Blue Flag beaches in the region to explore.

On the rugged southwest tip of Portugal, is the small historical village of Sagres , where Prince Henry the Navigator lived and planned voyages into the unknown during the 15th century Age of Discovery. Today a white fort built atop the reddish cliffs dominates the bay and is the place to watch the sunset on a clear evening. The coast around Sagres is dotted with secluded coves and beautiful beaches with rolling waves. The beaches at Praia da Bordeira, Zavial and Ingrina are popular with surfers.

The view from Faro Cathedral bell tower in Faro

Central Algarve

Although the central strip between Faro and Albufeira is the most developed part of the coast, where a multitude of high rise hotels and timeshare apartments blight the landscape, some resorts still retain remnants of their fishing-village past, including the Algarve's biggest and best-known resort of Albufeira, where whitewashed houses line the cobbled streets of the old centre. With magnificent sandy beaches and plenty to do, central Algarve is an ideal base for families. It's also the place for golfers, with several world-class golf courses including those at Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.

Tavira town Algarve

For a quieter side to the Algarve, head to the Ria Formosa nature reserve where you'll find island lagoons, endless sandy beaches and the occasional beachside bar. The Quinta do Marim centre, part of the reserve, is a series of mudflats and dunes and a popular spot for bird watching - look out for spoonbills, turtle doves, Iberian chiffchaffs and the more elusive purple gallinule. It is also home to the distinctive Portuguese water dogs.

The most charming city on the coast is Tavira, located on the palm-lined banks of the River Gilão. Its origins, dating back to 2000BC, are reflected in its mix of architectural styles. A wander through the town's warren of cobbled streets reveals a Roman bridge, Moorish whitewashed houses and numerous 18th century churches. More Moorish architecture can be explored in the towns of Silves, with its recently restored castle, and the fishing port of Olhão, with white cubed houses and one of the most animated and picturesque markets of the Algarve selling an enormous variety of seafood and local produce.

Head to the hills north of Portimão and explore the green and unspoilt landscape of the Serra de Monchique. The pretty spa town of Caldas de Monchique, with its eucalyptus-shaded central square, has been visited since Roman times for its thermal spring. For pampering spa treatments, visit the Villa Termal das Caldas (00 351 282 910 910; www.monchiquetermas.com ).

When to go to The Algarve

Avoid the heat and the tourists that descend on the Algarve in summer and visit in spring or autumn when the fields are filled with wild arum lilies and rock roses in yellows and pinks. The mild winter weather makes off-season holidays in the region also possible. In February you can expect sunny days that are warm enough for al fresco lunches, though the temperature drops rapidly in the early evening.

Enhance Your Trip

  • Tour Extensions

Today in Sintra, you have the choice of two activities. First you may choose to explore the quaint hilltop village independently, making your way along the winding streets lined with cork products, pastries, and local cafes. Your other option is to venture into the National Palace of Sintra, the country’s best-preserved palace from the Middle Ages, with the support of audioguides.

Start your trip to Portugal early with 3 nights in Porto, the jewel of Portugal set along the Douro River. The second-largest city in Portugal is home to incredible architecture and stunning cathedrals, a UNESCO-protected historic center from the middle ages, and of course – Port wine. Everywhere you turn in this visually stunning city will show you examples of baroque architecture, the romanticism movement and its monumental designs. Your stay in Porto will be perfectly balanced between guided excursions and free time, allowing you to get to know Porto on a deeper level.

  • Overnight Flight
  • Travel on your overnight flight to Porto, Portugal.
  • Porto, Portugal - Tour Begins
  • Arrive in Porto, a city that’s steeped in history and built with an artistic architectural eye. Here, you’ll find quiet cafes perfect for sipping a glass of Port wine and watching the world go by. You may choose to venture out and head toward the Douro River where so much of the history of this city started. You may even see a reproduction rabelo boat, traditionally used to transport Port wine from the wineries up river to the city of Porto.
  • Porto - Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto
  • Get to know this captivating city with a walking tour led by a local expert. Take in the grandeur of Praça da Liberdade Square, Sao Bento Train Station and its iconic azulejo tiles, and a visit to the Palácio da Bolsa, the Stock Exchange Palace, to see the legendary “Arab Room.” Meet a local chocolate maker at a family-run chocolatier store that has been in business for almost 100 years. Cross the Dom Luis I bridge into the neighboring city of Vila Nova de Gaia where we will visit a wine cellar for a tour and tasting. The afternoon is yours. Tonight, you’ll find out why Porto is regarded as a culinary hotspot during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Today is yours to explore Porto how you’d like. Take advantage of this day at leisure – maybe heading into the Livraria Lello, considered to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world or visiting a local restaurant to try the famous local delicacy, the “francesinha” sandwich.
  • Porto - Lisbon - Cascais
  • Board a train* to Lisbon, where you’ll transfer to Cascais to join your tour and start the next leg of your travels.

Extend your stay in Portugal with 3 nights on the island paradise of Madeira and 1 night in Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital city. Considered to be the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” Madeira combines nature - it's gushing streams, irrigation channels and botanical gardens - with culture such as wine tasting and watching embroiderers and wicker weavers at work. Enjoy a full day at leisure to soak up the island’s charms however you please. Spend time in traditional villages, venture along winding mountain roads, and splash in natural volcanic swimming pools. Your mini-tour ends with a night in Lisbon, whose captivating energy and mouth-watering culinary scene will capture your heart (and stomach!).

  • Lisbon - Funchal, Madeira
  • Fly to Madeira Island, the “pearl of the Atlantic” where you will arrive in the early afternoon. Madeira boasts a subtropical climate, majestic mountain ranges and volcanic caves. After some free time for lunch on your own in the colorful Santa Maria district, be led on a walking tour of Funchal’s old downtown with its quaint narrow streets and historical sites, such as the 15th century cathedral. Visit the Botanical Garden of Madeira with its collection of more than 2,500 plants from all continents.
  • The day is yours. During your free time, you may choose to visit the Sacred Art Museum and learn how the sugar-cane trade allowed for the purchase of Flemish art dating back to the 15th century. Or simply relax and enjoy the amenities that your hotel has to offer. Then gather in the evening for a traditional dinner known as an espetada. Folk dancers and lively music entertain you as you feast on a favorite local dish cooked over an open fire.
  • Funchal - Câmara de Lobos - Porto Moniz - Funchal
  • Begin your day with a tour that takes you to Câmara de Lobos, a traditional village on a picture-perfect bay that served as a special retreat for Sir Winston Churchill. It was here that Madeira’s natural beauty captivated him and inspired many of his paintings of the island. Drive along mountain roads, passing banana plantations and vineyards while en route to the world’s second-highest cliff, Cabo Girão. After, visit a sugar mill and learn about the importance of sugar cane production in the early 15th century. Sample some local specialties made at the mill before leaving for the fishing village of Porto Moniz. Here, enjoy free time for a swim* (weather permitting) in the natural volcanic rock pools before returning to Funchal.
  • Funchal - Lisbon
  • Board your flight and return to the metropolitan energy of Lisbon. Enjoy your afternoon as you please.
  • Lisbon - Tour Ends
  • Depart for home with Portugal in your heart as your tour ends today.

Hotel-Turim Marques

Fado: the perfect blend of voice and guitar. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Patrimony, as a celebrated form of world music that captures what it is to be Portuguese. The word Fado comes from the Latin word fatum, which means fate or destiny. It is a style of music that is all about deep feelings: the disappointments of love, the ups and downs of life. No one knows quite how Fado first came into being, but to this day, Portugal's traditional music remains at the very heart of the country's culture. In one of Lisbon’s most popular Fado restaurants, professional performers entertain you while you enjoy a typical Portuguese three-course dinner with wine included.

Set sail on the clear blue waters of the Bay of Lagos to experience the stunning Ponta da Piedade with some of the most beautiful and famous coastal scenery in Portugal, including pristine beaches and rocky cliffs that are simply breathtaking. Upon arrival at Ponta da Piedade transfer to smaller boats... then, it’s off to explore the magical grottoes! Take in the striking rock formations sculpted by the sea for thousands of years as you weave in and out of tiny inlets, serene grottoes and impressive caves.

Tour Lisbon, Portugal's capital overlooking the Tagus River.

Spend the night in Evora, known as the "Museum City of Portugal."

  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Portuguese food is fresh, hearty, and delicious. Try seafood stew cooked in a cataplana, a shell-shaped copper pan, or the national dish, bacalhau (salted cod). A couvert, or simple plate of bread, butter, and olives, is often served when you sit down to a meal; while it’s served for free in many restaurants, some will add a charge to your bill for it.
  • Portugal operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Portugal is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Thinking of doing a 10day Trafalgar tour that covers Lisbon , Algarve , Porto and Duoro (with stops in Evora , Coimbra , Obidos)

Vs a Tauck tour which only has Lisbon and Porto and doesn’t go south to Algarve

Think Algarve area is a “must visit”?

And has anyone done a Trafalgar or Tauck tour?

' class=

Probably not unless you like beaches and although October weather is usually OK for that it's niot guaranteed. What are these tour operators saying to justify two or three days in the Algarve?

(Praia Marinha, Benagil Cave etc…)

We don’t need to “lay out” but didn’t want to miss out on seeing a different part of Portugal if it’s worth it…
