In Review: 2020 Trek Crockett 5 Alloy Cyclocross Bike

When Trek signaled its commitment to cyclocross with the launch of a new line of ’cross bikes to replace the old Ion CX, it headed farther west and south from the company’s Wisconsin home with a frontier theme. The company named its flagship carbon bike the Boone, and its alloy cousin received the name Crockett.

We last reviewed the Trek Crockett in 2013 when it was a new alloy cyclocross bike with cantilever brakes and a double chain ring crankset.

Earlier that year Katie Compton raced a prototype Crockett to a silver medal in the Cyclocross World Championships in Louisville, KY and then rode the newly introduced bike in 2013/14 . Trek chose aluminum for their foray into a new cyclocross platform at the time for ease in making prototypes.

Trek released the carbon Boone about a year later. A 2016 update gave the Crockett and Boone thru-axles (though the front was 15mm), and both cantilever and disc models were available. The Boone received an update in 2018 with the addition of a front IsoSpeed decoupler.

Trek has updated the Crockett again for the 2020 model year, shedding weight and Stranglehold dropouts while now looking a lot like a carbon fiber frame. We have a first look at the updated alloy cyclocross bike from the Wisconsin company for this In Review Spotlight. Stay tuned for a full review after the upcoming cyclocross season.

The new Trek Crockett is aluminum just like its predecessors. 300 Series Alpha aluminum is Trek’s moniker for advanced aluminum frame design that takes into account tube alloy, shape and weld quality to form a complete frame that offers desired ride qualities.

In the case of the new Crockett, that means the actual alloy, size, shape and gauge of each tube may differ. Trek maximizes weld surface areas and minimizes the amount of weld material. The combination of these elements yields an efficient yet comfortable frameset. The ride, weight and aesthetics are claimed to rival a carbon fiber frameset. Trek reports a 56cm frame weighs just 1,325g. That’s nearing carbon fiber frame weights.

The only round tube on the frameset is the seat tube, and all the others are oval or trapezoid, tapered, bent or with changed morphology along their length. The tapered head tube seems to be wrapped by the top tube that itself appears to split around the seat tube into the individual oval seatstays.

The Crockett frameset is absent of the large, globulous TIG welds common on aluminum frames. The welds are smooth with only a slight bulge indicating junction, thanks to what Trek calls “Invisible Weld Technology” that is said to reduce welding material, decrease weight and increase strenght. The large rounded trapezoid down tube morphs into a laterally wide oval at the bottom bracket junction, spanning almost the entire width of the T47 bottom bracket shell.

Trek has switched to threaded bottom brackets using the T47 shell diameter and pitch, but fit in its wide bottom bracket shell that uses internal bearings. In the past Trek used an 86.5mm press-fit system. Now with a threaded system, the shell is shortened to 85.5mm to accommodate the wrench fitting for the threaded cups.

The chainstays are asymmetric; the left takes a wide bend for tire clearance while the right takes the straight path, squashed to clear the tire and rings. The right chainstay limits tire width to 38mm max.

The geometry is definitely standard cyclocross, with a 72-degree head tube angle, 42.5cm chainstays and 6.8cm bottom bracket drop. Our 56cm sample has an effective top tube of 55.8. The reach is 387 and the stack is 580mm with the 157mm headtube.

With the 45mm fork offset, the trail calculation is 67mm with 33cm cyclocross tires. The wheelbase is 102cm, and the calculated front-center is 600.5mm. All that adds up to nimble cyclocross race geometry.

Trek Crockett has been a singlespeed choice for some thanks to the horizontal Stranglehold dropouts that allow for many or one-geared riding. The old Crockett frame with the Stranglehold dropouts is still available for the one-gear fans or curious, but the dropouts are more traditional (and lighter) for the new 2020 Crockett models, with a standard 12x142mm thru-axle in its place. The front is 12x100mm thru-axle, and interestingly for cyclocross, hex bolt-based—no hand lever here.

Disc brake calipers attach via flat-mount with a 140mm minimum rotor size.

Two bottle mounts are present in the usual down tube and seat tube locations. There are threaded mounts for fenders on the seatstays, dropouts and on the back of the seat tube.

Control lines route internally through the down tube, but exit the bottom of the down tube to run externally along each chainstay to the rear derailleur and brake. If you decide to run a front derailleur, the cable follows the same path but requires a special order cable guide. An included plastic chain guide mounts directly to a special frame mount at the bottom of the seat tube.

The Crockett uses Trek’s IsoSpeed carbon fork design where the wheel mount is a bit behind the actual fork blade end, yielding normal trail and wheelbase even though it looks like it has more rake. Trek has stuck to that design for half a decade now. The steerer is all carbon and tapered.

The Trek Crockett is UCI approved.  Our review sample Crockett 5 has an attractive raspberry to grape fade paint scheme.

Trek offers the 2020 Crockett in two builds, the Crockett 4 and 5, and as a frameset. We received the higher-end Crockett 5 for review.

The Trek Crockett 5 is SRAM Rival equipped, with a Praxis Works Alba M30 aluminum direct-mount crank with a 40t Wave Tech chain ring. Our 56cm frame is spec’d with a 172.5mm crank length. The SRAM 1130 cassette is 11-32t, giving cyclocross race gearing with a 1.25 low ratio.

The Trek Crockett 4 comes with SRAM Apex and looks to be value-oriented at $1,679.99.

Handlebar, stem and seatpost on the Crockett 5 are all-aluminum Bontrager models. Notably, the Bontrager Elite stem is compatible with Bontrager’s Blendr accessory mounts that integrate into the front of the stem. With the Blendr compatible stem mated to the bar, in this case a Bontrager VR-C, there is a gap at the top and bottom of the stem/bar junction if you don’t use a Blendr accessory mount.

You can actually tuck your glasses’ arm into the stem for a quick place to put them if the sun goes down-but in prolonged rain, the stem could fill with water I’d suppose.

The seatpost has a two-bolt micro-adjusting clamp holding a Bontrager Montrose saddle with steel rails that is quite comfortable for this tester. The 56cm size has a 10cm stem and 42cm wide bars. The stem top cap is emblazoned with the “cross is coming” and “cross is here” of hashtag fame.

Bontrager Affinity Disc aluminum tubeless-ready clincher wheels are standard on our build. These have a satin-finished aluminum rim with 24 double-butted spokes laced 2x to Bontrager Centerlock disc hubs. The Affinity TLR rim is 27mm outside width and 22mm inner width.

Bontrager CX3 32mm knobby cyclocross tires inflate just wider than the rim. The rims have cloth tape and tubes installed when shipped.

Trek TLR often utilizes a molded plastic rim strip, but not the Affinity TLR. The TLR compatible CX3 tires snap lightly but securely onto the rim bead shelf with only sealing tape. There is no bead locking lip on the rim’s bead shelf, but it seems secure and reliable enough so far.

Complete weight 19.5 lbs without pedals and 11.7 pounds without the wheels.

Initial Impressions

You have to forget what you’ve heard about aluminum frames from two decades ago. Personally, I went from steel on the road and ’cross straight to carbon, bypassing the early aluminum frames of the 1990s and early 2000s.

We were still reviewing a lot of aluminum bikes in 2007, the year Cyclocross Magazine premiered. It seemed aluminum technology reached its peak before the carbon wave in began in earnest. The new Trek Crockett is a leap ahead of those bikes, something we saw in the first iteration of the Crockett in 2013.

I have gotten the Crockett out for a few pre-cyclocross season rides after receiving it. The updated Crockett was immediately familiar, with nimble handling and quick acceleration on demand. First impressions suggest it has get-up and go.

Transitions from pavement to the Crockett’s off-road habitat have gone smoothly thanks to damping on par with some of the smoothest cyclocross bikes I have reviewed. I was able to keep my lines and get traction in the saddle through the transition and on some bumpy straightaways.

Trek Crockett 7 Disc cyclocross bike

This article originally appeared on BikeRadar

Pro bike: Katie Compton's Trek Crockett Disc

Trek arrived at the gun fight with a knife, being the only alloy competitor in our cyclocross grouptest. But the company certainly had good reason to be confident — the Crockett is an awesome race-ready rig that is sub $3k with a Force 1 group.

Highs: Awesome alloy, comfy cockpit, clean lines, 1x adaptability Lows: Stiff front end Buy if: You're doing lots of 'cross races and might throw your hat in the singlespeed ring from time to time

The Crockett 7 Disc can be set up 1x11, as it's sold, or as a singlespeed. Of course, this doesn't speak to all riders, but the engineering it used to create this adaptability is crafty, making for a somewhat easy transition between 'freshly shaven' and 'moustache-flannel'.

The front end of the bike is a tad unforgiving on bigger hits, but Trek product managers executed a very comfy bar wrap to take the edge off. Additionally, this is likely an artefact of alloy, rather than a flaw in the bike's design or the full carbon fork. For the most part I'd say this is mostly only noticeable because of the company the Crockett was keeping through this test (all carbon, and subsequently highly tunable ride character).

The Crockett also possesses a cable management system that clearly shows Trek's passion for 'cross, overall attention to detail and longstanding commitment to aluminium. The Crockett's full-housing strategy has seamless entry and exit points for easy service and clean aesthetics.

The Crockett could easily win the award for best chain catcher, and it's blessed with abundant tire clearance.

If maximum spec for your dollar is what's on the menu, the Crockett is a clever bet.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc

Geometry-wise, things are fairly standard as well. A reach of 391mm for the 58cm size tested won't cause any surprises, but the 597mm stack results in a front end that is a touch taller than what you might expect from a pure racer. Nevertheless, I found this added front end height to be a positive when tackling steep and technical descents, when you could opt for the added security of being in the drops without feeling like you were going to somersault over the handlebar.

The longer-than-usual 1028mm wheelbase also helps keep things rubber side down when things get rough, but despite this increased stability on the faster downhills, the 66mm of trail – how far behind the steering axis the tyre's contact patch is – still managed to keep the handling snappy at lower speeds, enabling the Crockett to get round greasy u-turns with ease.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - front

Looking at the Crockett from a distance, there's nothing that really jumps out at you as being unique or different. Look a little closer, though, and you'll see that it benefits from some small but clever touches that can also be found on many of Trek's other bikes.

For example, you've got some nifty threaded mudguard mounts that can take proper metal-stayed guards with the addition of an adapter, but are nearly invisible the rest of the time. The Crockett's internal cable routing is designed to provide the straightest cable runs possible for improved shift performance, and replacing cables isn't the hassle it can be with other internal systems. Funnily enough, the Crockett includes routing for five cables/hydraulic lines, though I never really figured out why. The integrated chain catcher is another neat feature that doesn't scream 'look at me' but is very functional and could potentially save you a race.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - cabling

Disc brakes on cyclo-cross bikes are hardly anything new in 2015, but this is the first year we've really seen hydraulic brakes available on bikes that most of us can actually afford. The Crockett 9 comes equipped with Shimano's excellent RS685 brakes on 160mm rotors, which provide truly game changing levels of power and modulation compared with cable-actuated discs and cantilevers. It takes a little while to get used to the feel (those used to Shimano's mountain bike offerings will feel right at home), but after a couple of rides you soon find yourself adapting to being able to brake later and with more confidence.

Speccing disc brakes is one thing, but designing the frame and fork to be able to handle the different forces is quite another. This is where the Crockett's stout front end and oversized fork really come into their own – there's no hint of twist or juddering when braking hard over rough ground.

Trek has used a 15mm thru-axle for the front end, which no doubt stiffens things up considerably while also ensuring that the brake pads remain correctly aligned when removing and replacing the front wheel.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - front disc 2

Disappointingly, a standard 135 x 9mm quick release is still used for the back end, when most of the industry seems to be moving in the direction of 12mm thru-axles and 142mm hub spacing. Granted, the increase in stiffness from a thru-axle is less noticeable on the rear wheel, but in terms of future-proofing and retaining compatibility with other wheelsets, it's a missed opportunity.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - rear disc

The Shimano Ultegra STI levers are slightly taller in order to house the master hydraulic cylinder, but they are still slimmer than the old 10-speed variety, and I find the extra on top actually provides a little added security when you hit some rough stuff while on the hoods.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - bars

The rest of the drivetrain is handled by Ultegra, save 105 substitutions for the chain and cassette, and an FSA Energy chainset with CX-specific 46/36t rings. There's really not much more to say about Ultegra – it simply works, combining a near effortless shifting feel with great accuracy. Given the asking price, though, you'd really expect a full Ultegra groupset for your money.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - crank

As usual on a Trek, the finishing kit is provided by Bontrager. As the 9 sits at the top of the Crockett range, it features some slightly snazzier and up-market items. The carbon seatpost looks great and the saddle clamp is very easy to use and adjust to achieve the correct angle and setback. The Race Lite bar is compact in shape, providing a nice flat transition between the shifter hood and bar, and also benefits from foam Iso-zone inserts on the tops, which add some vibration damping.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - saddle

Rounding out the spec is a set of Bontrager Affinity Comp tubeless-ready wheels, shod with 32mm Bontrager CX3 Team Issue tyres  (very similar in tread pattern and depth to Schwalbe's popular Racing Ralph). The Comps are a little on the heavy side and do negatively affect the Crockett's ability to accelerate out of low-speed corners, the sort usually littering a cyclo-cross course. Sure, any serious racer will be buying a set of race-day-specific wheels, but given the Crockett 9's asking price some racier wheels such as the next level up Elites  would have been welcome.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - rim and tyre

The wheels can be converted to tubeless using a specific rim strip and valve. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test out the tubeless capabilities during the test period, but previous experience with Bontrager mountain bike tubeless wheels have shown it to be a system that works and can be easily set up.

Out on the trails, the Crockett feels surefooted, inspiring confidence that it can handle anything you could throw at it. Undoubtedly, a lot of credit for this has to go to the brakes, which can really transform a CX bike from something capable of handling grassy fields into a machine you could take down your local mountain bike trail. Powerful brakes require a strong frame to handle the forces and the Crockett is more than up to the challenge – the front end is particularly impressive in its ability to hold a line no matter how hard you push it on rough terrain.

>> Check out our guide to buying a cyclo-cross bike here

The direct handling is great on the race course too, providing plenty of feedback on the conditions under tyre so you can make those micro-adjusts needed to stay rubber side down and moving forward. The stiffness comes at a price, though, as despite the Isospeed fork – designed to provide some degree of comfort up front – it doesn't really bear out in practice. If more cushioning is required, you'll need to let a few psi out of your tyres.

Trek Crockett 9 Disc - fork

The stiff frame might lead you to assume the Crockett will jump forwards at any hint of power through the pedals, but unfortunately the somewhat porky 9.2kg mass dampens its enthusiasm to do so. The extra weight can be felt not only when accelerating from low-speed corners, but also when lifting and shouldering the bike on stairs and run-ups. To some extent, this is an inevitable consequence of disc brakes, which are heavier in themselves and also require a beefier frame, but the Affinity Comp wheels must also take a share of the blame.

There's no doubt the Crockett 9 is still well capable of mixing it between the tape, but the eagerness and nimbleness of racier – and more expensive, probably – bikes just isn't there.

Although the Crockett 9 doesn't look the most exciting on the outside, it's capable of tackling terrain that will have adrenaline pumping through your ears. The combination of Shimano's excellent hydraulic brakes and a frame that simply will not bend results in a bike with point-and-shoot handling that's only limited by the human on board.

However, at £2200 it's at the top end of what you can expect to pay for an aluminium-framed bike these days, especially considering that there are areas, such as the wheels, where the spec could be improved.

A hugely fun bike to thrash about on in the woods, but it doesn't offer the greatest value in the current marketplace

Tell us what the bike is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about the bike?

The Crockett is a cyclo-cross race bike, "built to race and hard wired for victory". Although it can hold its own on the race course, it truly shines when tackling difficult off-road terrain, and would suit someone looking for a bike that could take them anywhere.

Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork?

There's no fancy tube profiling to be seen, but everything is put together well and it adds up to a smart looking bike that also feels built to last.

Tell us about the materials used in the frame and fork?

Aluminium frame, full carbon fork.

Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork?

Very standard 'cross bike geometry, though a little taller than some true race-focused bikes out there. The wheelbase is also a touch longer for a given size, which adds a bit of stability when handling rougher terrain at higher speeds.

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

For the 58cm size tested, reach was 391mm and stack was 597mm. This results in a bike that is middle of the road in terms of length, but around 20mm taller than other race-orientated CX bikes.

Riding the bike

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

The frame's stiffness is uncompromising and negatively impacts comfort, which isn't necessarily a top priority for a CX bike. Instead, tyre pressure is key to providing a little bit of cushioning against impacts. Summing the ride quality in one word, the Crockett feels "direct".

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

The front end is noticeably stiff, resulting in precise handling and a sense of control, even when braking hard over rough ground.

How did the bike transfer power? Did it feel efficient?

The Crockett's frame is easily capable of handling anything I could throw at it, from standing starts to town sign sprints. There is no chainrub or other indications of flex to speak of.

Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel? If so, was it a problem?

Slight toe overlap, but never an issue when riding. Bear in mind that I have size 46 shoes with the cleats pushed all the way back, so I suspect this won't be an issue for most, save perhaps in the very smallest sizes.

How would you describe the steering? Was it lively, neutral or unresponsive? Neutral

Tell us some more about the handling. How did the bike feel overall? Did it do particular things well or badly?

The Crockett feels great when the going gets rough and the speeds increase as it provides a very stable and confidence-inspiring platform. At lower speeds, it definitely lost some agility, but overall Trek has got the balance pretty well sorted.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort? would you recommend any changes?

Though the Crockett boasts a comfort-enhancing Isospeed fork and handlebar gel, tyre pressure in the surprisingly supple CX3 Team tyres is still the key to providing comfort.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's stiffness? would you recommend any changes?

The fork with its 15mm thru-axle is very impressive in its tracking ability and stiffness under braking.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's efficiency? would you recommend any changes?

The overall frame feels efficient once the bike is up to speed, but the 9.2kg overall weight does take some effort to get it there.

Solid when out of the saddle.

The Crockett felt a little sluggish coming out of low-speed corners.

It provides great stability over rough terrain when pushing hard.

Ideally, a CX bike would have a little low-speed stability to enable it to nip around tight CX courses, but the Crockett feels optimised for faster speeds.

Long wheelbase and direct feedback through the handlebar means you can push the Crockett to its limits.

Long wheelbase inspires confidence on rough, off-road descents.

It's stiff, but doesn't exactly jump forwards too readily under power.

The drivetrain

No issues at all. The latest Shimano groupsets are simply brilliant.

Time and numerous crashes have shown that Ultegra is built to last.

A few non-Ultegra substitutions add some weight.

As the Crockett is one of the more expensive aluminium framed bikes around, you'd expect a full Ultegra groupset for your money.

Tell us some more about the drivetrain. Anything you particularly did or didn't like? Any components which didn't work well together?

Despite not being Shimano Ultegra, the FSA Energy chainset with 46/36 chainrings reflects the Crockett's true race background. No compact cranks here to suit the commuters.

Wheels and tyres

Reliable and stiff enough, but they feel a bit sluggish when accelerating hard.

Not super-heavy, but considering the quality of the rest of the components, the wheelset does feel under-specced.

The Bontrager CX3 tyres are nicely supple and provide decent grip for a wide range of conditions.

Given the price, I can't help thinking that a higher end wheelset should have been specced.

The RS685 brakes are the standout components, providing powerful, easy to control braking no matter the conditions. Finishing kit is all Bontrager, but it's quality stuff despite not having the same appeal as perhaps Ritchey or 3T.

Disc brakes add some weight, both at the component level and due to having to beef the frame up to handle the forces.

Gel pads in the bar are a nod to comfort, but overall there's not a lot of cushion between bike and rider.

As with the wheels, I think a £2K-plus bike with an aluminium frame should come with plenty of carbon bits to make up for it.

Anything else you want to say about the componentry? Comment on any other components (good or bad)

The hydraulic brakes are the standout item and really transform the bike into something on which you could tackle any terrain while still feeling in control.

Your summary

Did you enjoy riding the bike? Yes

Would you consider buying the bike? If the price had been discounted.

Would you recommend the bike to a friend? Yes

Use this box to explain your score

The Crockett was great fun to ride, handling everything I could throw at it, and if I was marking it on performance alone it would get a much higher score, but as an overall package it is expensive for an aluminium-framed bike, and some of the components fall short of what I would expect for the money.

The rest of the drivetrain is handled by Ultegra, save 105 substitutions for the chain and cassette, and an FSA Energy chainset with CX-specific 46/36t rings -

so basically the front and rear derailleurs are the only Ultegra on the 'drivetrain'??

so it's not 'Ultegra'...for the rest of the drivetrain then...

Trek Crockett cyclocross bike – first look

Plus carbon fibre Cronus range details

Trek Bicycle Corporation

James Huang

trek crockett occasion

Trek's range of cyclocross bikes will consist of three distinct platforms for 2014 – the all-new aluminum Crockett, with a lower bottom bracket and disc options ideally suited for North American-style courses; the carryover carbon Cronus, with more traditional Euro-style geometry; and the do-it-all CrossRip.

Crockett details

The new aluminum Crockett is essentially the production version of the custom bike Trek produced for dominating US cyclocross racer Katie Compton last season. Trek will offer the Crockett in five models for this season - three with cantilever brakes and two with discs - plus frameset-only options for DIYers.

Pricing is very reasonable across the board, with the most expensive Crockett 7 Disc model fetching a relatively modest US$2,630/£2,000. Privateers looking to build a pair of identical rigs on the cheap will be especially happy with the frameset, which will cost just US$880 (there doesn't seem to be a UK option) including a carbon fork, headset, and even a Bontrager Race X Lite stem.

Compared to Trek's more traditional Cronus, the Crockett has notably new-school geometry. Head tube angles are slightly slacker on smaller sizes but steeper on larger ones, seat tube angles are a bit steeper, the chain stays have shortened by 5mm, and there's more bottom bracket drop. For any given size, the Crockett also has a longer reach and more standover clearance.

Trek will offer the Crockett as a frameset, too

Overall, we expect the bike to be better suited to aggressive and skilled handlers – like Compton, coincidentally. "I've always been a rider who likes a steep seat angle so I can get over the pedals and feel powerful," she told BikeRadar .

"I also want a bike that is predictable in and out of turns and handles quickly but also rides in a straight line through sand and mud, since I experience so much of that in Europe," she added. "I also like a bike that's stable through turns and corners so it can carve singletrack and exit the turn where you expect and want it to. Having a bike I feel powerful on and one that handles perfectly makes me a happy bike rider."

Compton says the Crockett's new geometry is also particularly well suited to shorter riders, who often have to deal with the frustrations of toe overlap out on course: "I know toe overlap is a big complaint for many women who ride small frames, and I'm happy to say that's no longer an issue with this bike," she said. "I ride a size 52 and have big feet with long cranks and still don't experience toe overlap in turns, which is a bonus when trying to ride through tight corners quickly."

Trek's S3 chain keeper will be incorporated into every new Crockett frame

Other features include the integrated and adjustable S3 chain keeper used on Trek's Madone and Domane road bikes, flexible internal routing (with the option of running full housing to guard against mud and water), and IsoSpeed forks, which use slightly more dramatically curved blades and backswept dropouts to lend a comfier ride while maintaining standard front-end geometry.

Naturally, there's a tapered 1 1/8in to 1 1/2in head tube, while dual bottle mounts and hidden fender mounts will add some versatility.

Claimed weights are impressive for the all-alloy frame, too. According to Trek road bike brand manager Michael Mayer, a 56cm Crockett frame weighs less than 1,250g. The matching all-carbon cantilever fork adds 395g with an uncut, 300mm-long steerer tube while the disc version will tack on another 100g with its additional caliper mounts and sturdier alloy steerer.

Trek Cronus carries on

Aggressive new geometry notwithstanding, Trek still appears to be taking a somewhat tentative approach to the disc brake-equipped cyclocross bike movement. The top option in the Crockett line sticks with an aluminum frame, a SRAM Rival transmission, and mid-range FSA cranks. For now, at least, racers looking for something more high-end will be limited to the carryover carbon fiber Cronus collection.

The US$3,880 (UK pricing TBA) flagship Cronus CX Ultimate comes with a SRAM Force 22 transmission (but a SRAM S952 carbon crankset), Avid Shorty Ultimate cantilevers, and Bontrager Race Lite tubeless-ready wheels.

The flagship Trek Cronus CX Ultimate

The US$2,940 Cronus CX Pro, on the other hand, will use the same 500 Series OCLV carbon frame but with a more budget-friendly Shimano 105 2x10 transmission, FSA Energy cranks, and Bontrager Race Tubeless Ready wheels.

Mayer hints that this will probably be the last season for the Cronus as it stands currently, though, with the Crockett's geometry and disc options likely moving upstream for 2015.

In Review: Redesigned 2020 Trek Crockett 5 Alloy Cyclocross Bike – Cyclocross Magazine

Our Review Trek Crockett 5 had a catchy red and blue colorway. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

The Crockett with 33mm wide Bontrager CX3 tires. Trek claims room for up to 38mm of clearance. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

The Crockett comes with SRAM Rival hydraulic disc brakes. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

Two bottle mounts are present in the usual down tube and seat tube locations. There are threaded mounts for fenders on the seatstays, dropouts and on the back of the seat tube.

The Crockett has fender mounts, but they are subtle and a bit hidden. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

With the invisible welds and shaped tubes, the front end of the Crockett looks very much like a carbon bike. The downtube has a control line entry port. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

The gap in the stem is for Bontrager Blendr accessories. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

The popular social media hashtags related to cyclocross adorn the head tube cap. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

The Crockett is bridgeless in the back for better mud clearance. 2020 Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bike. © C. Lee / Cyclocross Magazine

With cyclocross season around the corner, I will be seeing how the updated bike from Trek performs on race day. Stay tuned for a full review.

March 25 Moscow concert hall attack

By Antoinette Radford and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Here's what we know about the four suspects in the Moscow concert hall attack

From CNN’s Masha Angelova and Josh Pennington

Suspects in the shooting attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, from left: Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, and Muhammadsober Faizov.

Each of the four defendants charged with committing a terrorist act in the Crocus City concert hall attack was brought to court individually in Moscow on Sunday.

They are accused of committing a crime under part 3, provision “b” of article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (terrorist act), which the Russian Criminal Code states is punishable with up to life imprisonment.

Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS .

Here's what we know about the accused:

  • Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev: The 32-year-old was the first defendant brought to court. Mirzoyev, from Tajikistan, had a temporary registration for three months in the southern Russian city of Novosibirsk in Siberia, but it expired, according to RIA Novosti.
  • Saidakrami Rachabalizoda: He appeared as the second defendant, and told the the court that he had Russian registration documents but couldn't remember where they were. He communicated through an interpreter, according to state media RIA Novosti. Rachabalizoda was reportedly born in 1994.
  • Shamsidin Fariduni: He was born in 1998 in Tajikistan and is a citizen of the Central Asian country. Fariduni was officially employed at a factory in the Russian city of Podolsk and was registered in the city of Krasnogorsk, according to state media RIA Novosti.
  • Muhammadsober Faizov: The fourth defendant appeared nonresponsive in a wheelchair and was accompanied by a doctor to his court appearance, as seen in Moscow City Court’s video shared on Telegram. Faizov was temporarily unemployed, before which he worked in a barber shop in Ivanovo, a city northeast of Moscow, and is registered in that city, according to state media RIA Novosti. He was reportedly born in 2004.

Moscow court orders preventive detention for all four defendants in concert hall attack case

Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, a suspect in the shooting attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, is escorted following a court hearing at the Basmanny district court in Moscow, Russia, on March 24.

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow on Sunday granted the investigators’ motion for detention, as the chosen preventative measure, for all four defendants in the Crocus City Hall attack case.

All four men have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22, Moscow City Court said on Telegram. They are all charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable up to life imprisonment.

Each of the four defendants was brought to court individually on Sunday. Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

The names of the four accused in the case are Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, Moscow City Courts announced via Telegram.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and have been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas. The court held closed hearings for each of the accused with no members of the public allowed, TASS reported, citing the court’s press service.

France raises its terror alert to highest level in wake of Moscow attack

From CNN’s Chris Liakos and Morayo Ogunbayo

France lifted its terror alert to its highest level on Sunday, after ISIS claimed responsibility for the concert hall attack in Moscow that killed at least 137 people on Friday.

“Given the Islamic State's claim of responsibility for the attack and the threats weighing on our country, we have decided to raise the Vigipirate posture to its highest level: attack emergency,” French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said in a post on X.

France’s decision to raise the alert came after a meeting of its defense and national security council, according to Attal.

On Monday, Attal said two attempted terror attacks on French soil had been foiled since January and 45 in total since 2017. He said thousands more soldiers were ready to boost its counter-terrorism force, should they be needed.

Speaking to reporters in Paris, Attal said that 4,000 soldiers were on standby to mobilize if necessary "in the event of an alert," in addition to the current 3,000 soldiers deployed across the country. Police presence in front of sites deemed sensitive such as schools would also be reinforced," he added.

CNN's Chris Liakos and Emmanuel Nicholas Miculita in Paris contributed to this report.

Analysis: Moscow attack is a blow to Putin, who promised Russia security

From CNN's Matthew Chance, CNN's Chief Global Affairs Correspondent, Moscow

Law enforcement officers are seen deployed outside the burning Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, on March 22.

Barely a week since Vladimir Putin secured his fifth presidential term, Russia has been plunged into carnage and disarray.

The attack  on the Crocus City Hall concert venue and shopping complex near Moscow, which has been claimed by ISIS, has left hundreds of people killed or injured.

This is hardly the stability and security for which so many Russians voted for President Putin. For years, the Kremlin strongman has been cast as a leader able to guarantee order in this vast, turbulent country. But Russia today seems more insecure and volatile than at any point in Putin’s 24 years in power.

The Kremlin’s brutal  war in Ukraine , now in its third horrific year, has cost Russians dearly. The military doesn’t publicize casualty figures, but US estimates suggest more than 300,000 Russians have been killed or injured.

The recent death of  Alexey Navalny , Russian most prominent opposition leader, has permanently silenced a vocal Kremlin critic. But the thousands who attended his funeral in Moscow, or who turned out to vote in a  Midday Against Putin  mass gathering at polling stations on the last day of the presidential election, indicate a base of discontent.

Now, the focus is firmly on the apparent reappearance in Russia of large-scale Jihadi terror attacks, unrelated to the Ukraine war or domestic opposition to the Kremlin. For a leader who has promised security and stability to Russians, a major attack on Russian soil is yet another powerful blow.

  • April 3, 2017 : At least 11 people were killed in a blast on the St. Petersburg metro. The explosion tore through a train as it was traveling between two stations in Russia’s second-largest city.
  • October 31, 2015 : A Russian passenger jet, Metrojet Flight 9268 crashed  on October 31 after departing from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh,  killing all 224 people  on board. US intelligence analysis suggested that ISIS or its affiliates  planted a bomb on the plane .
  • December 30, 2013 : A massive explosion at a train station in the Russian city of Volgograd killed at least 16 people, including one police officer, the Investigative Committee of Russia said.
  • January 25, 2011 : A suicide bomber attacked Domodedovo Airport , Moscow's busiest airport, killing 35 people and wounding about 100, authorities and state television said.
  • March 29, 2010 : Two explosions rocked the subway stations in central  Moscow during rush hour, killing at least 38 people and wounding more than 60 others, spawning widespread public outrage. A website associated with Chechen separatists, who have long fought for independence from Russia, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
