The 4 Best Travel Visa Services in the United States

visa_application_process_explained

The visa application process

Here is my quick list of the top visa services in the U.S based on my experience of having traveled to 50+ countries (and received countless visas along the way). I’ll go into more detail later in this post.

TravelVisaPro

PassportVisasExpress

Although I’m normally a do-it-yourself kind of guy, I sometimes get a travel visa service to take care of all the visa formalities for me. The best travel visa services in the United States (I’ll discuss 4 in total) often have knowledge and connections that the average person simply won’t have.

Getting experts to do the tedious work of getting the visa for you on your behalf can make a lot of sense and relieve you of future headache if you’re trying to secure a visa for a particular country.

Even for seasoned travelers like yours truly, visas can be incredibly frustrating. You have to get this document and that document; and often, despite having all of the necessary documents and fees in place, the consulate or government agency never fails to find a reason why they cannot process your visa.

If you have any questions on visas, good luck getting anyone to answer the phone….consulates and embassies are notorious for not picking up the phone. Many consulates would rather provide you with an e-mail address that gets you a short, uninformative response in three business days or more (and sometimes they don’t even respond).

The visa application process can be very stressful

So when the going gets tough, go ahead and get a good visa service to get your visa for you. Sure, the commission they get for doing this service is often quite high, but these guys do this stuff for a living and have the relationships and knowledge to help you save time and avoid future hassle.

Most visa services works as follows:

  • You fill out a form.
  • You gather the required documents.
  • You send the visa service your required documents.
  • Visa service takes care of everything and mails you your visa!

So, without further ado, check out the reviews below of the best travel visa services in the United States based on feedback from my readers and my personal experience. In order to evaluate the services, I took into account criteria such as responsiveness, website design, cost, professionalism, phone demeanor, and attention to detail.

As a side note, if you’re a U.S. citizen and don’t have a passport, all of the agencies below can also assist you with getting a passport. Service fees for both visas and passports vary between the companies, so be sure to check each website for their latest fees so that you can get the best rate.

With U.S.-based offices in Washington, DC and New York City, a U.K.-based office in London and a Canadian office in Ontario, VisaHQ is a heavyweight in the world of visa agencies. Even though they’ve been around in the online travel visa business since just 2003, they have grown rapidly and have the cleanest, most user-friendly website that you will find. If you go to the bottom of their home page to where it says “VisaHQ widgets”, you will find a cool tool that quickly shows you if you need a visa for pretty much any country in the world.

Using Visa HQ is as easy as:

  • Completing the secure online application.
  • Mailing the documents necessary to prove one’s identity
  • Sit back, relax and wait for your passport or visa to arrive in the mail .

It is that simple.

When applying for a visa, customers can choose from a long line of countries. Also, anyone who orders a new U.S. passport from Visa HQ receives a free passport cover. In addition to issuing new passports, Visa HQ also lets people add pages to their passport, change their name on their passport and report a lost or stolen passport.

Prices for passports start at $59.00, and the company promises that there are no hidden or cancellation fees. When it comes to visas, VisaHQ is definitely the more expensive of the visa agencies listed here. With that said though, they are often worth every penny; but, nevertheless, be sure to shop around all these sites before settling on a travel visa service.

2. TravelVisaPro

travelvisapro_screenshot

With offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Seattle, Travel Visa Pro is superb. I’m a big fan of these guys. I did business with them in the past when I had to get a document legalized at a consulate in Washington D.C. They were super responsive and got back to me on any query I had in well under 24 hours (normally within the hour). If you are trying to get a document (such as a transcript or proof of employment) legalized, these guys are the ones to go with.

For passports only, customers can choose urgent shipping to have their passport delivered to them within two days of their application. For both passports and visas, customers can also get rush delivery, which is anywhere from one to three days for a visa and four days for a passport. The budget delivery option can allow customers to obtain their visa within three or more days and their passport within two to three weeks.

Travel Visa Pro also offers a concierge service where customers can have an employee fill out their application. There are many benefits to using the company’s concierge service, including but not limited to being entered into their VIP Program, free insurance coverage on one’s passport and free printing of electronic photos at Travel Visa Pro’s office. Many of my readers who have used the services of this company report that their service was fast, friendly and efficient.

I would say that the one downside to Travel Visa Pro is their overly busy, text-filled website. It is not as user-friendly as the VisaHQ website, meaning you have to hunt around a bit to find out what you are looking for. In order to get a visa, when you go to their homepage, choose the country where you want to go in the small drop-down list under the “Visa Services” heading. You will then need to follow the steps listed on the website in order to apply.

3. PassportVisasExpress

passportvisasexpress

With more than 15 years’ experience issuing passports and visas, PassportVisasExpress has been around longer than some of the other travel visa services out there. I’ve heard from a lot of satisfied readers who have used their services to obtain a passport and/or visa without any hassle.

Passport Visas Express specializes in expediting passport applications in as little as 24 hours, but they have a pretty decent visa service as well. I do find their claim to issue “expedited” visas to more than 150 countries a bit misleading though (not that many countries offer expedited visas). In most situations, visa processing speeds will be at the whim of the consulate (which is beyond their control).

With that said, the user interface is superb, and the site is chock full of visa information. I love it how you just click on the visa button, enter your zip code, and you go right to the appropriate visa information for the consulate of your jurisdiction. I know this must have taken a TON of work to implement, so I give a strong Bravo to these guys for putting this functionality on their website.

PassportVisasExpress also offers a live online chat. They issue new and replacement passports, as well as passports for children and updated passports for a person who has changed their name, lost their passport or needs to obtain a second one.

travisa_screenshot

TraVisa is a company that specializes in issuing passports and visas to travelers quickly and easily. A service they offer that many other similar companies don’t is the ability to save an electronic version of one’s passport or visa on your smartphone. They have a mobile application that for Androids, iPhones and iPads let people get all the necessary information about their passport or visa. The company also allows its customers to register their travel with the U.S. Embassy. They even have an instructional video on their website that tells people everything they need to know about how to use their services.

TraVisa has offices in Atlanta, Washington DC, New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Houston, Ottawa and London. The countries they offer visas to include China, Brazil, Russia, India, Australia, Vietnam, Kenya, Tanzania and many more. This company also specializes in the legalization of documents.

The company’s website also includes a travel store where customers can purchase items such as phone cards, passport covers, maps and medicine to prevent jet lag.

The majority of customers that use TraVisa are applying for a visa to travel to Brazil, China, India, Russia and Vietnam (i.e. the countries that require U.S. citizens to get a visa).

Also, a cool feature of TraVisa is their visa “pre-check.” A visa pre-check is when a TraVisa Visa employee reviews a customer’s visa application to be sure that it was filled out properly, and the customer has all the necessary documents in place to get the visa approved. Once customers have ordered their visa they can keep track of their application by logging onto the TraVisa website and getting updates on their application status.

My readers report that TraVisa provides decent service (but not above and beyond like some of the others in this list…but still do give them a try if you are price shopping) when it comes to applying for or renewing a passport or visa.

So there you have it folks, the best travel visa services in the United States. Be sure to visit each website and check prices before deciding on a visa service. Service fees can vary quite considerably. Anyways, good luck on your visa hunt and safe travels!

Schengen visa for the Netherlands

VFS Global: Who are they and what do they do?

VFS Global: apply for a visa for the Netherlands

There are quite a few misunderstandings about the role of Vfs global in the Schengen visa process. For example, some visa applicants believe that they are responsible for the assessment and granting of a Schengen visa. That is not correct. That is why in this article we will discuss the responsibilities of Vfs global .

Vfs global , previously known as 'Visa Facilitation Services Global', is a company that assists in the procedure for request a visa and passport issues for governments and diplomatic missions around the world. The company was founded in 2001 as a project within the Swiss travel organization Kuoni, founded by CEO Zubin Karkaria. In 2016, Kuoni was purchased by EQT Partners, a global investment firm based in Stockholm. At the time, Kuoni had three business units, including VFS Global, which was growing the fastest.

Vfs global works for 67 governments worldwide, has 3427 application centers and offices in 147 countries. Since 2001, they have processed more than 257 million applications. VFS Global is headquartered in Dubai, (United Arab Emirates) and is originally a Swiss company (part of EQT, a private equity firm headquartered in Stockholm). Most of VFS Global's shares are owned by investment firm Blackstone.

VFS Global works for the Dutch government

VFS Global works like external service provider for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2018, after a global tender, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs chose VFS Global as an external service provider for the provision of  visa services , in eight of the nine regions worldwide.

Vfs global  operates as an external service provider for the Dutch government in Africa, North America, Central and South America, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and India.

VFS Global is responsible, among other things, for the provision of Schengen visa services, Caribbean visa services, national long-stay visas, Dutch travel documents and civic integration exams.

Activities of VFS Global in obtaining a Schengen visa

VFS Global specializes in providing visa and consular services for many countries, including Schengen countries. The role of VFS Global in the Schengen visa application process can be summarized as follows:

  • Provision of information : VFS Global provides information on the visa requirements, documentation and procedures for applying for a Schengen visa for different countries. This information is usually available on their website and through their customer service.
  • Appointment system : VFS Global operates an online appointment system that allows applicants to make an appointment to submit their visa application at a VFS Global application center or an embassy/consulate.
  • To file a request : Applicants can submit their Schengen visa application at a VFS Global application center. VFS Global collects the necessary documents, checks that all required information is present and accepts the visa fee on behalf of the embassy or consulate.
  • Biometric data : VFS Global collects the biometric data (fingerprints and photo) of the applicant, if required, and forwards them along with the application documents to the appropriate embassy or consulate.
  • Request Processing : VFS Global acts as an intermediary between the applicant and the embassy/consulate and forwards the application to the embassy or consulate for review and decision-making.
  • Return of passports : After the Embassy or Consulate has made a decision on the visa application, VFS Global will return the passport with the visa (if approved) or an explanatory letter (if rejected) back to the applicant. Applicants can collect their passport from the VFS Global center or choose to have it delivered by courier.

It is important to note that VFS Global has no influence on the visa application decision itself. This decision is taken exclusively by the embassy or consulate of the relevant Schengen country. In the case of the Netherlands, this is the Consular Service Organization (CSO) in The Hague.

Consular Service Organization (CSO) in The Hague

VFS Global takes the visa application form and supporting mandatory documents, such as proof of a  medical travel insurance , in. They check whether the application is complete and send the documents, together with the passport of the visa applicant, to the CSO in The Hague for assessment. The Consular Service Organization (CSO) processes all visa applications and applications for Dutch travel documents abroad.

Apply fo visa with VFS Global in Dubai

All about VFS Global in the UAE

Are you planning to travel out of the UAE to a new destination, but not sure how to get the visa? Whether it is to apply for a Schengen visa or to process travel documentation for Australia, China, Vietnam or other applicable countries, visit the VFS Global Visa Application Centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. They will be your one-stop-shop for all visa application processes to your next travel destination.

WHAT IS VFS GLOBAL?

VFS Global, aka Visa Facilitation Services Global, is an authorised authority that outsources visa applications for different countries. They deal with visa application and processing, passport issuance, document attestation and other related services. They have outlets across the globe to help travellers with their visa application process. It’s important to note that VFS Global is not involved in the decision-making process behind visa applications. Hence they have no control over whether a visa is granted or denied.

Currently, there are a total of three VFS Global branches in the UAE – Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Residents of the UAE can use VFS to apply for a Schengen visa, which allows entry to Austria, Hungary, Norway, Belgium, Iceland, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Latvia, Slovakia, Estonia, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Finland, Lithuania, Spain, France, Luxembourg, Sweden, Germany, Malta, Switzerland, Greece and Netherlands.

Some of the other VFS approved countries include Australia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Ireland, Malaysia, Turkey, UK and Ukraine.

How can I apply for a visa with VFS Global?

VFS Global simplifies the process of applying for a visa for all travellers with a few simple steps. The length of this VFS visa application process can differ, depending on the country’s visa requirements.

STEP 1: Find out the type of visa you need

Every visa application has certain guidelines that need to be met. This is why the first step to applying for a visa through VFS Global in Dubai or any other emirate, is identifying the pertinent details of the visa. This includes information such as eligibility criteria, documents, guidelines, fees etc. This will help to determine the timeframe for the entire process, fees and more. You can easily find all this information with VFS in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. They offer a comprehensive account of all visa requirements of every country that they are in collaboration with.

Step 2: Begin your application

Every country has a different method when it comes to its visa application process. Once all the pertinent details of the visa are identified, the next step is to download and fill out the visa application forms. The Dubai VFS centre offers all assistance in finding these visa application forms and in many cases also aid in filling them out in the country’s native language if required. This step also involves preparing all the supporting documents to apply for a visa.

Once you’ve got all your documents in order and have filled out the forms, you can book an appointment with the VFS in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, depending on whichever is closest to you.

Step 3: Book an appointment at any VFS Visa Application Centre and pay the fees

To apply for a visa using VFS Global, travellers must make an appointment to visit the VFS Centre in their location which can be scheduled through their website. Each of these appointments come with a service fee. The cost for VFS Global’s visa services can range anywhere between AED 60 to AED 300 or more, depending on the country you are applying to.

Before booking the VFS visa appointment in Dubai, make sure you are aware of all the details relating to your visa application. The type of appointment can vary depending on the country you are applying to. For example, some countries don’t require an appointment with VFS. If so, avoid making a booking as you may not get a refund.

STEP 4: Visit a Visa Application Centre

On the day of your appointment, it’s important to carry the originals and copies of the visa application form, passport and other relevant documents required at VFS Global. It’s advisable to reach there 15 minutes prior to the time given. Once you’re there, the attendant there will verify all the details that have been submitted and advise on the next steps. After the details are verified, a digital photograph will be taken on the spot and your biometric information will be recorded. Once everything has been submitted, you will be issued a tracking/reference number which you can use to track your visa application.

SETP 5: Track your application and collect your passport

There are multiple ways to track your visa application with VFS Global. You can view the status online with the reference number on an invoice/receipt issued by the Visa Application Centre along with your last name. You also have the option to receive email and SMS updates to know the application status. Once you’ve got the confirmation, you then have two options by which you can collect your visa: visit the centre or have it delivered to you via a courier.

Travel Facilitation key to Tourism Development

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Industry experts acknowledge that travel facilitation is closely linked with the development of Tourism and is a key contributor to the overall appeal of a destination, which can lead to increased demand and sustained tourism performance. Travel facilitation is a broad term that defines all the services and facilities related to getting the potential visitor from their point of origin to the destination. For purposes of this article however, the focus will be on aspects that can be managed and/or controlled by respective destinations. This includes inter-alia, visa policies and fees, travel regulations and taxes, and the relevant immigration processes and services.

Regional organizations like the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) are increasingly placing emphasis on the need for countries to address antiquated visa, travel and taxation policies which can be impediments to travel and tourism industry growth. More particularly for the countries of the Greater Caribbean, efforts of the ACS aim to provide information on current best practices, systems and processes and also promote cooperation and knowledge exchanges between countries towards the standardization and harmonization of immigration and visa policies and processes, at the regional level.

On the broader international scale, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), two of the world’s leading Tourism Organisations in seeking to raise awareness of this topic as a priority of global significance, have published several studies and reports to evaluate the current situation of visa regimes and procedures and the possibility to build solutions to advance travel facilitation.

According to these reports the countries of the Latin America and Caribbean Region are among the most open in the hemisphere and have made significant progress, either by implementing ‘visa exemptions’ and/or ‘visa-on-arrival’ measures,   which have contributed to the remarkable growth of the tourism sector. Especially noteworthy are the multilateral agreements that mutually exempt all or certain categories of travellers from the visa requirement. However, there are still important areas of opportunity that remain under-utilised, such as the possibility to maximize the use of information and communication technologies in improving visa and immigration procedures.

It is also worth noting that while many countries have instituted visitor-friendly systems to facilitate cruise travel, similar measures for commercial air-travel seem to be lagging. Many travellers will no doubt recount the challenges associated with air-travel in general to include travelling within the region.   Much of this can be attributed to regulations imposed by Airlines and International Civil Aviation Authorities, such as new luggage restrictions, intrusive and lengthy security checks, as well as long lines and travel delays. However, there are certain factors within the ambit of countries control that can be made more efficient and ‘traveller-friendly’.

The current reality is that travelling within the region is encumbered by stringent travel policies that make travel less desirous and more costly. Travellers, whether local residents or visiting tourists have to contend in most cases with Value Added Tax (VAT) added to the cost of airfare, as well as taxes for entry and/or departure, and other ambiguous levies and fees associated with travel to the destination.   These measures are used by many countries in the region and elsewhere around the world as a means to generate revenue. Several industry experts argue however, that by making travel more affordable there is potential to increase volume in terms of the number of visitors travelling to the destination and consequently in the revenue generated from in-country spending. There is added value in that the revenue generated could be up to double the amount of what would have been collected in entry taxes and fees.

Air-travel remains the most convenient and fastest way to travel, particularly for international visitors, and costly taxes and fees act as a deterrent particularly to leisure travellers and in some cases may contribute to making travel unaffordable. A primary challenge for every tourist destination is to make their product attractive and affordable. For the tourism dependent countries of the Greater Caribbean seeking to remain competitive and increase their share of tourism arrivals and earnings, a review of fiscal policies as well as taxes and fees associated with air travel is highly recommended.

There are also regulatory systems, such as immigration and customs procedures, which are worth considering. Noticeably, in many countries throughout the region, these entry procedures remain a tedious and archaic process. In this area, upgrading airport facilities as well as introducing computerised entry-systems and mechanised scanners, although costly would be worthwhile investments. The human factor is also a key ingredient that should not be overlooked. The ‘Airport experience’ is often the first impression that tourists gain of a country, and their subsequent perceptions can be adversely affected if they encounter difficulties, delays, high costs or unfriendliness when going through the immigration and customs process. The importance of training to instill the need for relevant airport personnel to deliver a friendly and courteous service, while also maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and efficiency is critical.

Travel policies, visa processes, entry procedures and other regulations are justifiably employed by Governments to ensure security; control immigration and limit the entry, duration of stay, or activities of travelers; and can be a means to control tourism and investment. Therefore it is not suggested that these be discarded altogether, but reviewed with the aim of updating to improve their functionality and effectiveness to Governments and visitors alike.

The UNWTO accurately asserts that, in order to reap the full socio-economic benefits international tourism can bring to a country, it is necessary to put in place conditions that make the country appealing and competitive, among which most importantly is to make the country easy to visit. In this regard, it is important to note that some countries (including many ACS Member States in the region) have introduced initiatives aimed at encouraging and facilitating visitor access. Examples include tourism investment incentives, increased marketing budgets and favorable visa policies, such as:

·          Visa waiver and visa-free travel for citizens of certain countries;

·          simplified visa application procedures such as visas on arrival; and

·          reduced or zero visa charges.

However much more remains to be done and more importantly streamlined across all countries of the region. A recap of the UNWTO/WTTC studies on Travel facilitation offers important conclusions that merit review. Accordingly, in attempting to offer some suggestions to enhance the travel experience to and among the countries of the Greater Caribbean, the following can be considered:

(i)                  There is need to improve the delivery of information on entry formalities, to include visa requirements and procedures. Information should be easily accessible on country information as well as Embassy/Consular sites, and be accurate and undated.

(ii)                Enhancing systems and processes to obtain visas should be prioritised. The application process, wait time, as well as the requirements linked to this process can be improved with the use of modern technology such as instituting eVisa programmes.

(iii)               The use of differentiated treatment measures can be explored. This can include having different policies and procedures based on duration of stay and purpose of visit, such as lessening restrictions for intransit or overnight visitors and establishing processes to support and encourage multi-destination tourism etc.

(iv)              Pursue visa facilitation Agreements. There are many Trade Agreements on the sub-regional level and among diverse groupings of countries within the Greater Caribbean Region that facilitate travel and therefore must be applauded. The strategy now should be to pursue multi-lateral arrangements with countries that have been identified as key source markets, particularly in the emerging markets from within Latin America as well as the growing economic powerhouses of the BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This can be pursued as an initiative with the framework of the ACS or by countries engaging in individual ‘reciprocal arrangements’.

It is believed that implementing any or a combination of these can yield substantial returns in visits, tourism receipts and jobs for local economies, in short guarantee the future growth and development of the tourism industry.

The Association of Caribbean States is the organization for consultation, cooperation and concerted action in trade, transport, sustainable tourism and natural disasters in the Greater Caribbean. Its Member States are Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela. Its Associate Members are Aruba, Curacao, (France on behalf of French Guiana, Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin ), Guadeloupe, Martinique, Sint Maarten, (The Netherlands on behalf of Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius ), Turks and Caicos.

UNWTO Agenda for Africa

Tourism for inclusive growth

Promoting Travel Facilitation (Connectivity/Visa) | SDGs 8 , 9

Air transport and tourism in Africa are major contributors to global economic prosperity, generating numerous socio-economic benefits and spin-offs. According to UNWTO’s data, approximately 55% of tourism travel is via air transport and destinations that stand to benefit most are those with better air connectivity and visa facilitation.

It is worth noting that there is a direct correlation between air transport and visa facilitation and the appeal of a destination which can lead to increased demand and sustained tourism performance. The Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and promoting Travel facilitation of the UNWTO Agenda for Africa are calling upon a unified “African sky” and a better-connected Africa which will maximize the benefits from tourism and other sectors and thereby boost the African Continental Free Trade Area of the African Union.

Nevertheless, the growth potential of both intertwined sectors in Africa has been severely disrupted due to the health crisis. Addressing the challenges and the needs of both sectors is therefore necessary to advance the agenda of air transport and sustainable tourism in Africa.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

National Visa Center

What is the national visa center and how does it help with immigrating to the u.s..

After the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves your request to immigrate to the U.S., USCIS sends your petition to the National Visa Center (NVC). NVC will request the immigrant visa application fee and all documents. NVC will hold your petition and all documentation until your immigrant visa interview can be scheduled at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

What happens after USCIS sends my petition to the NVC?

If you are immigrating to be with close family (spouse, child or parent of a U.S. citizen), NVC will contact you to proceed immediately. If you are immigrating for work or other family-based relationships, the process may not start immediately. The date you filed your immigrant visa petition is called the Priority Date and you will need to check the  Visa Bulletin . If the Priority Date matches or will soon match the most recent date allowed (the Cut-Off date), the NVC will request the immigrant visa application fee and all documents. NVC will hold your petition and all documentation until your immigrant visa interview can be scheduled at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  NVC will notify you if your Priority Date does not match yet the Cut-off Date. NVC will contact you once they start processing your case.

How do I know if my Priority Date matches or will match soon the Cut-off Date? When will my case start processing?

If your application date (Priority Date) matches or will soon match the Cut-off Date, the NVC will start working on your petition. NVC will notify you once your petition is ready or will soon start processing. For more information on the Cut-off Dates, please visit the  Visa Bulletin , which is updated monthly.

How do I find out my application date called a Priority Date?

When you filed an immigrant visa petition, USCIS assigned you a date called a Priority Date. You can verify the Priority Date on the approval notice USCIS sent you when they approved your petition.

How can I contact the National Visa Center?
