The England men's cricket team will tour South Africa in January and February to play three one-day internationals, Cricket South Africa announced on Thursday.

The series is, however, set to clash with the new domestic T20 competition that South Africa are launching at the same time in early 2023, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone are all signed to teams in the tournament.

England's white-ball team are currently in Australia preparing for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup, with the team's opening game against Afghanistan in Perth on October 22.

England then face Australia in three ODIs in November, before Ben Stokes' Test side tour Pakistan for three Test matches in December. The white-ball team recently won their T20 series in Pakistan 4-3 - England's first tour of the country in 17 years.

Sir Charles Aubrey Smith batting for the Hollywood Cricket Club circa 1932

England cricket tours to South Africa didn’t used to be extended sleepovers

ODI series will last less than a week – a far cry from 13,000-mile round trips made by steamer and 60-hour coach journeys

A philosophical question: does England’s one-day international series in South Africa really count as an overseas tour? The first match takes place on Friday, the last on the following Wednesday. Two of the games are at the same ground in Bloemfontein and the other within day-tripping distance – you can get to Kimberley in less than two hours on the bus. It will be the briefest, slightest cricketing incursion an England team has made to the country. Perhaps, in a modern age of peripatetic players and bite-size schedules, any tour less than a week in length could be reclassified as an “intervention”, or possibly an “extended sleepover”.

Such a drive-by affair would have been a sci-fi fantasy to the first England team to make the journey, in the 19th century. When Major Robert Gardner Warton set sail from Dartmouth to Cape Town in 1888, with a party of seven amateurs and seven professionals, it was practically a pioneering expedition. The potential folly of the endeavour is perfectly captured by Richard Parry and André Odendaal in their overarching history of England’s tours to South Africa, Swallows and Hawke , which was published last year.

Even at the height of an era “characterised by overconfidence, arrogance, ignorance and a relish for risk”, the first cricket tour to southern Africa was a particularly ludicrous idea, say Parry and Odendaal. On the field, the hosts may not have been expected to present too much of a challenge – most of the matches were played against odds for that very reason – but the climate, distances, transport and overall logistics certainly did.

Fixtures were interspersed with journeys of enormous length and discomfort. A 13,000-mile round trip by steamer, with ample food and entertainment, was luxury compared to the travel required between games. With the development of the railways within the Transvaal Republic embargoed under President Kruger, the England team were required to cover nearly 800 miles of their tour by horse-drawn coach or cart.

Charles Aubrey Smith, who captained the side and displayed a flair for the theatrical long before he became a Hollywood actor, wrote a vivid report of the tour for the Sportsman magazine; it included an account of a 60-hour coach journey between Kimberley and Johannesburg, each player wedged tightly against the next. “How we hated our neighbours whose elbows were continually finding our ribs,” he wrote. “How we abused those behind for grinding our backs with their knees.”

Even that stretch wasn’t as painful as the leg to Pietermaritzburg, whose roads, according to Warton, were “strewn with large boulders over which we bumped mercilessly, until our heads and every joint of our bodies ached”.

A vintage illustration of Major Robert Gardner Warton

Either through optimism, poor planning or foolhardy courage, the team also attempted the treacherous mountain passes of the Outeniquas in the dark – until they nearly lost their top batter Bobby Abel over the side and Smith agreed to call a halt til dawn. On another occasion, a group of players were forced to steer a 10-horse coach in an overnight storm after realising the drivers were incapacitated through alcohol and fatigue.

Warton’s tour was a financial flop, but at least it didn’t end with its captain arrested for non-payment of debt as the following one did. If the first tour seemed reckless, the management of the second, led by Walter Read two years later, appears almost delusional. By the time the players landed on the Cape in December 1891, the kitty was already missing the £750 they owed for their ship’s passage.

Captain Read and the tour manager, Edwin Ash, sought emergency funding from a Scottish entrepreneur, James Logan, who had identified cricket as a tool for marketing his business and increasing his social cachet in his adopted country. It was left ambiguous whether Logan’s advance of £750 was a loan or investment; either way, after 14 weeks of Read’s unappealing, risk-averse brand of cricket, the crowds had ceased to show and Logan’s money was gone.

In Empire, War & Cricket in South Africa, Dean Allen recounts how Logan “fearing that he would not be repaid” had Read and Ash detained on their way to the boat that was to take them home to England. They spent three hours under arrest before their ship was finally allowed to depart. In the year to come, Logan would win his legal case against them in Cape Town’s supreme court and a judge ordered them to repay the original loan plus £107 in costs.

As Allen’s book demonstrates, this “moral victory” proved as effective a PR boost for Logan’s reputation as his initial sponsorship of the tour and he went on to shape the early development of cricket in South Africa.

after newsletter promotion

What’s unavoidable in the freshly told histories of these early tours is the sense that a lot of people were on the make. Logan’s contributions to cricket covered over some seriously sharp business practice and one of the reasons Read and Ash’s tour went bust was because they were paying themselves more, as amateurs, than they offered the professionals.

Aubrey Smith, meanwhile, used his tour to network with mining moguls, and stayed on when the rest travelled home to set up an unsuccessful stockbroking business with his teammate Monty Bowden.

Perhaps it’s helpful to know, in the calendar-driven angst about the future of the game, that even cricket’s so-called golden age was as beholden to commercial interests as any other.

Why visit South Africa?

Do as the British swallows do and head south during the winter for some African sunshine and experience the amazing England Cricket Tour of South Africa 2023 .

England’s ODI tour to South Africa in January is the perfect time to escape the chilly British winter and enjoy the wall to wall sunshine, blue skies and vitamin D on offer in sunny South Africa. The tour will take you to two unusual destinations for cricket supporters – Bloemfontein and Kimberley. Bloemfontein has the only museum solely dedicated to the Anglo Boer war so for military enthusiasts it is a must visit and Kimberley, having been the centre of the diamond mining industry in South Africa is home to the largest man made “diamond diggers hole” in the world. The beautifully restored Kimberley Club is a must visit too having been the African colonial ‘Gentleman’s club’ outpost for the British mining magnates such as Cecil John Rhodes and his cronies!

Combine the cricket matches with visits to game lodges, the Garden Route or Cape Town and you will be blown away by the beauty, hospitality, history and cultural diversity of South Africa.

One of the few countries in the world where you can experience a true African safari and see the Big Five – a visit to one of the country’s game reserves is a must. Whether it’s the huge world famous Kruger National Park – the size of a small country – or one of the smaller more intimate game reserves you could see lions at dawn, elephant at breakfast, and rhino at sundowners.

South African hospitality is legendary – we love to meet new people and passionately recommend our favourite places. The country is a true melting pot of many fascinating cultures. Nowhere is this more evident than in the mouthwatering cuisine offered by a huge variety of restaurants from Michelin standard haute cuisine to ‘braai’ (barbecue) shacks in the remotest of villages.

Don’t forget the wine!! A visit to the ‘Mother City’ of Cape Town is a must for a trip to the beautiful winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and a chance of sampling some really world class wines in the most beautiful mountain scenery. Try South African special Pinotage, a fruity red-blend, or MCC, the country’s very own, perfectly delicious bubbly.

In Cape Town you will be spoilt for choice with Table Mountain, The Cape of Good Hope, Robben Island (fascinating prison island where Nelson Mandela spent many years), beautiful beaches, hiking, penguins, excellent shops, art galleries and museums – you name it we have it!

If adventure is your thing, you just have to know where to look. Conquer the world’s highest bridge bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge on the Garden Route, or dive with sharks in False Bay. If that sounds too scary, Cape Town offers paragliding and kite-surfing experiences that are hard to beat.

Truly A World in One Country!

This was the best cricket tour I have been on. It was the little things that made it special, and the appreciation that everyone was slightly different but accommodating their needs was brilliant. I would happily use Not Out Travel again in the future as they were a pleasure to travel with!

David Payne

The Not Out Travel tour to Pakistan was the very best value for money and all worked faultlessly with the best tour leaders. I wont look anywhere else for my future tours, as it was a great personally configured tour with many options that worked for me.

IPL 2024 Summary

What makes the ipl interesting, where can you learn more on ipl.

Prepare for another exhilarating season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where cricketing talent takes centre stage! In IPL 2024, the anticipation is sky-high as franchises gear up for intense bidding wars to secure top players. This year, the spotlight is on the players who command the highest prices in the auction.

From seasoned pros to rising stars, each player brings a unique blend of skill and charisma that makes them indispensable to their teams. Join us as we explore the elite players who Ravi Shastri is watching with Stake.com and who the most sought-after and expensive acquisitions through the quest for IPL glory are. Today we’ll look at:

  • Anticipation for intense bidding wars
  • Focus on top Indian competitors and foreign players commanding the highest prices
  • A mix of seasoned pros
  • A unique blend of skill and charisma

Mitchell Starc is a standout Australian fast bowler known for his classic left-arm action and remarkable ability to swing the ball at pace. His international career began at just 20 years old. He showed impressive performances, such as his debut ODI. There, he took 4-27 against Sri Lanka.

He made waves with memorable Test spells, including an eight-wicket haul against South Africa and a match-winning 5-63 against Sri Lanka. Starc’s crowning moment came during Australia’s 2015 World Cup triumph. Because of his 22 wickets, he was awarded the Player of the Tournament.

He continued to impress, which shows across bookies and many other platforms. He achieved a historic feat 2017 by claiming a hat-trick in both innings of a Marsh Shield match. In 2019, he reached the milestone of 200 Test wickets. Thus cementing his place among cricket’s greats.

In 2022, he set a new record by becoming the fastest bowler to take 200 one-day international wickets. Starc’s journey is a testament to his exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to the sport.

Pat Cummins burst onto the cricket scene at 17, leading the wicket-takers through the 2010-11 Big Bash League (BBL). By 2011-12, he was Cricket Australia’s youngest contracted player. Despite limited first-class experience, he impressed with his Test debut against South Africa. He claimed 6-79 and secured Australia’s win.

Injuries hampered his progress, but he returned to help Australia win the 2015 ODI World Cup. Since 2017-18, Cummins has been a key part of Australia’s Test squad. He became the world’s No.1 ranked bowler. He played a crucial role in Australia’s first T20 World Cup win in 2021 and became Test captain in November 2021.

Daryl Mitchell made his Test debut in 2019, filling in for an injured player and impressing with a solid 73 against England. He had earlier debuted in T20Is in 2019. His breakthrough came in 2021 when he scored his first Test and ODI centuries. At the 2021 T20 World Cup, he played a crucial role in New Zealand’s journey to the final.

Despite a tough tour of England in 2022, Mitchell shone with two fifties and three hundred, including a remarkable 190. He comes from a sporting family, and his father is a former New Zealand rugby union player and coach. Mitchell’s consistent performances have cemented his place in New Zealand cricket.

Harshal Patel made headlines in 2021 when he tied the IPL record for most wickets in a season, claiming 32 scalps. Known for his tricky, slower balls , he’s a valuable asset in T20 cricket. Starting with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he later joined Punjab Kings for a hefty sum of INR 11.75 crore in 2023.

Despite early struggles, Patel persisted and shone in domestic cricket. Notably through the Ranji Trophy. His standout performances earned him an IPL contract and a T20I debut for India in 2020. Patel’s success in the IPL led to a massive payday of INR 10.75 crore with RCB in 2021, a testament to his rising stature during the league.

Alzarri Joseph’s journey to cricket stardom began in his Antiguan backyard. Due to his height, he started as a legspinner there before switching to fast bowling. He made waves in school cricket as one of the fastest bowlers and impressed at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

He became West Indies’ top wicket-taker. His standout performances earned him a spot in the Test and ODI teams. Through the IPL, he made a memorable debut for Mumbai Indians in 2019, taking six wickets for 12 runs, the best figures in IPL history.

Spencer Johnson’s cricket journey is remarkable despite starting his T20 career at 27. He quickly became a force in the BBL, earned Australian caps, and secured a million-dollar IPL deal. After a foot injury setback in 2017, he made a stunning comeback, shining in the 2022-23 BBL season with the Brisbane Heat.

His performances in overseas leagues and a standout show in the Hundred earned him international debuts. Surprisingly, he fetched an impressive IPL deal with the Gujarat Titans in 2024, starting with a modest base price.

Sameer Rizvi, born on December 6, 2003, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, is an Indian cricketer known for his right-handed batting and right-arm off-spin. He made his first-class debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy and his List A debut in the 2021-22 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Rizvi has represented India at the U-19 level and has impressed in domestic cricket, especially during the UPT20 league, where he captained the Kanpur Superstars and topped the run charts. His talent caught the eye of the Chennai Super Kings, who signed him for a hefty 8.4 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. With 295 runs in 11 T20 innings at a strike rate of 134.70, including two fifties, Rizvi has shown promise during the shortest format of the game.

Rilee Rossouw shines as a top-order batsman for South Africa in shorter formats. He caught attention during the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. He later dominated South Africa’s domestic cricket scene. Despite initial struggles in international cricket, he showed resilience, scoring a century against West Indies and performing well in the ODI World Cup.

Rossouw briefly played county cricket in England before returning to South Africa, where he made a stunning comeback with consecutive T20I hundreds. Despite South Africa’s World Cup disappointment, Rossouw’s revival underscores his importance to the team.

Shahrukh Khan, not to be confused with the Bollywood star, shares a larger-than-life persona akin to the famous actor. Standing tall at 6 feet 6 inches, Shahrukh displayed immense potential in cricket from a young age. He represents Tamil Nadu in various age-group tournaments.

Despite being overlooked for the U-19 World Cup in 2016, Shahrukh’s exclusion led him to make his mark in senior cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His journey took a turn when he debuted in T20 cricket. Thus showcasing his power-hitting abilities.

Although facing setbacks, including a slump in form and being sidelined from state selection, Shahrukh persevered, refining his skills and emerging as a reliable finisher. Dinesh Karthik’s mentorship played a crucial role in his development.

The pinnacle of his career arrived when he earned a spot in the IPL with Punjab Kings in 2021, followed by a remarkable last-ball six in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final. While his IPL stint had its highs and lows, Shahrukh continues to be a promising talent in Indian cricket.

Rovman Powell, a versatile cricketer hailing from the Caribbean, has carved a niche for himself as a middle-order batsman with a knack for delivering handy medium-pace overs. Since the mid-2010s, Powell has been a regular feature in West Indies’ white-ball squads. Although he’s yet to cement his place firmly.

His breakthrough moment came in 2018 when he notched his maiden ODI century against Ireland during a crucial World Cup qualifier match. Despite such standout performances, Powell found himself excluded from the squad for the 2019 World Cup.

Yet, he’s remained a linchpin for Jamaica in white-ball cricket, consistently churning out runs from the middle order. Powell’s leadership prowess was evident when he captained the Tallawahs franchise in the 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Additionally, his match-winning innings in the final of the Abu Dhabi T10 League in 2018 showcased his ability to excel under pressure. In 2022, Powell’s fortunes turned as he enjoyed an extended run in the West Indies T20I side, marked by blistering centuries against England, India, and Bangladesh.

His debut IPL season with Delhi Capitals further underscored his talent, as he exhibited a penchant for quickfire cameos from the lower middle-order, consolidating his position as a valuable asset in the world of T20 cricket.

The Indian Premier League is the pinnacle of T20 cricket. It’s burgeoned as a global sporting colossus since its inception in 2008. Conceived by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this prestigious league is characterised by its round-robin group and knockout format. It boasts teams rooted in prominent Indian cities.

Scheduled matches often illuminate under floodlights for prime-time viewership. They captivate a worldwide audience. The IPL’s evolution is underscored by its financial prowess. It transforms cricket stars into millionaires through high-stakes auctions.

Notably, franchises like the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have propelled the league’s economic landscape. Player acquisitions are reaching astronomical figures. Despite initial controversies and expansions, the IPL’s meteoric rise is evident. It’s symbolised by a staggering increase in franchise values over the years.

The recent 2023–27 cycle media rights deal underscores the league’s unrivalled commercial appeal. It sets new benchmarks in the sporting arena. Such monumental success has inspired the birth of analogous ventures. Including the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Major League Cricket (MLC), which extend the IPL’s indelible imprint on global cricketing landscapes.

The IPL captivates audiences with its electrifying blend of emotions. It boasts cricketing prowess, star-studded lineups, and pulsating matches. Its fusion of international talent, strategic gameplay, and thrilling contests under the floodlights creates an unparalleled spectacle. It draws fans worldwide into its exhilarating tapestry of sporting excellence. Fans join in to watch their favourite players in big tournaments and small games.

What makes the IPL a great tournament is the electrifying atmosphere it creates. It’s fueled by the world-class talent on display and fans’ passionate support. Each match is a spectacle of skill and excitement, with players showcasing their best performances under pressure.

The fast-paced nature of T20 cricket adds to the thrill. Thus making every ball and every run count. The IPL’s global appeal also brings together players from different countries and cultures, creating a diverse and competitive environment.

Moreover, the tournament’s innovative format, high-stakes auctions, and intense rivalries between teams contribute to its allure, ensuring that fans are always on the edge.
