Taking into consideration departures from the main United States airports, flights out of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York take at least 8h and 40min to get to Franjo Tudman Airport Zagreb (ZAG). The trips taking off out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) take 11h and 15min or more to make it to the airport in Zagreb. Croatia flights from the US west coast like the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) can take over 11h and 50min to make it to Zagreb. The two other major airports in Croatia are the Split Airport (SPU) and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). The flights from these major US cities take about the same time, and have at least one layover before landing in Croatia.

Average price of flights to Croatia by month

Plan your trip to croatia by taking into account the cheapest months to travel. the average price of a one-way flight to croatia is currently $77 while a round-trip flight costs $146. price data was last updated on april 7, 2024..

Currently, April is the cheapest month in which you can book a flight to Croatia (average of $941). Flying to Croatia in June will prove the most costly (average of $1,602). There are multiple factors that influence the price of a flight so comparing airlines, departure airports and times can help keep costs down.

Peak Season:  As one of the most popular beach vacation destinations in Europe, most flights to Croatia are packed during the summertime. Sun-worshipers of all ages from around the world find their hot-spot along Croatia’s coastline. As a result, resorts are more full between June and August and prices rise accordingly

Off-peak Season:  Croatia experiences plenty of precipitation during the fall and spring seasons, but these transitional periods make for the best time to find cheap flights to Croatia. As the main draw of Croatia is its coast, the winter period (especially from November to February) is the low season for tourism. However, it is possible to ski in the mountains as there is often snow. Zagreb is rapidly becoming a tourist hotspot and is worth visiting at any time of year – even if the weather is freezing, there is enough to do inside. Lent and the accompanying carnival is another great time to fly: Rijeka is the place in which it is celebrated with the most enthusiasm.

Shoulder Season:

The mountain range running north-south alongside the country’s sea protects the coastline from the worst of the winds and the cold weather, which means spring arrives early and autumn ends late. If you’re heading for the coast, therefore, it’s possible to swim from about May, and right up until October in Southern Dalmatia. This means that May-June and September-October are great times to visit. Avoid most other tourists, pay discounted prices for hotels and pick up cheap Croatia flights.

Entertainment

Had a great experience with Singapore Airlines, staff was outstanding and the food was great 👍🏼 😊

Thanks to its miles of luxury beaches and resorts, this country heavily relies on travelers booking flights to Croatia. Croatia flights are filled with holiday travelers seeking sun and surf during the winter months and cruise ships docks millions of travelers a year on Croatia’s coastline. The most alluring part of Croatia is its abundance of land – despite the hoards of travelers that book flights to Croatia every year – there is always a secluded piece of land hidden among beach coves for visitors needing a little solitude.

Step into Croatia’s medieval past and explore ancient ruins, castles and churches that ooze history. Take a walk through Croatia’s tiny villages or the capital city of Zagreb and dine at one of the locally owned-restaurants before rejoining the masses in one of Europe’s most magnificent countries.

Undulating lavender hills on Hvar; the Unesco world heritage site of Dubrovnik and the unrivalled beauty of the Dalmatian coast are some of the main reasons tourists book flights to Croatia every summer. With thousands of kilometers of coastline on the Adriatic and more than a thousand islands, the country is a popular European destination for sun lovers. The surroundings to the predominantly rocky beaches are also stunning. Unending pine forests and mountains make the view inland just as attractive as that out to the turquoise sea.

Though the country’s tourism has completely recovered from the Yugoslav war of the early 1990s, evidence of the destruction is still apparent. A walk along the old city walls of Dubrovnik show a patchwork of roofs, some hundreds of years old, some replaced just a decade ago after the bombings. The coastal towns of Dubrovnik, Split and Rijeka are most visited by beachgoers, but inland Zagreb has plenty to offer sightseers. This is also the arrival point of most flights to Croatia, though transport from here to the coast is easy to find.

Book a flight to Croatia for utter relaxation in the midst of a rich culture.

Getting to and around Croatia

The airport is located around 11 miles away from the city and there are a couple of ways to get you between the two. There is a bus which operates twice every hour which goes to the bus station around a 15 minutes’ walk away from the city center. This is ideal if you don’t have a lot of baggage with you or if you intend to hail a taxi from the bus station. Your other option is to take a taxi straight from the airport. You’ll be able to get directly into the city easier this way but you’ll need to part with more money than the bus. It’s also worth making sure you agree on the price before getting in.

With Split you are limited to either hailing a taxi or taking a bus. Once your flights to Croatia have landed you’ll want to look for bus number 37 or bus number 38. Both go to the city although the 37 is quicker. You can also pre-arrange for a bus to collect you from the airport, although this isn’t really necessary unless your flight tickets have you flying in very late. Taxis are available from outside of the airport and if you are travelling with a friend and can split the fare then this can be a worthwhile option.

You can take the airport shuttle to the city of Pula relatively easily. Once you’ve booked your flights to Croatia you can go online and secure your bus ahead of time or just buy a ticket once you arrive. The shuttle buses can go to other cities too such as Rovinj and Porec so make sure you get on the right bus. Taxis are another option and if you have a lot of luggage then it might be easier to find one outside of the airport and just go straight to the city that way.

Internal Croatia flights are the quickest way of getting around and are available between all major destinations, such as Split, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Pula. Croatia Airlines is the national carrier.

Regular, efficient ferries in the summer time serve Croatia’s coastline, though in the off-season ferry schedules are restricted. This is certainly not the quickest route – ferries from Rijeka to Split, for example are overnight, whereas you could drive in four hours – however it is easily the most attractive and one of the best ways to see the country. The ferries are run by Jadrolinja (pronounced “yad-ro-lin-eeah”) and are very reasonably priced. For travel to some of the more remote islands, ferry is obviously the only option.

Buses are available throughout most of the country and tend to be the quickest form of public transport. They are often more expensive than the trains, though not as comfortable. The rail network is relatively good, but any travel along the coast, or from the coast to Zagreb, is far easier accomplished by bus. The coastal path from Rijeka down to Dubrovnik offers some wonderful landscape and views of the azure sea.

Cars can easily be hired and driving is easy. Most roads are in a good state of repair for travel between the more popular tourist destinations.

Tips for your stay in Croatia

  • One of the major draws of the country is its stunning coastline, running the length of the country from  Rijeka  past  Dubrovnik . But be prepared before you hit the beach: there are very few sandy spots to be found, and most of the resorts boast instead a rugged and beautiful black rock. Bring a thick towel if you need padding for sunbathing.
  • Dubrovnik is arguably the most popular town. Its best beach, however, isn’t on the mainland but a small island just 10 minutes away by taxi boat.  Lokrum  island is a national resort, protected by the Croatian Academy of Art and Science. As well as a stunning beach, backed by pine trees, the island also has a botanic garden, filled with tropical plants, and an old Benedictine monastery, part crumbling, hidden in the undergrowth which now serves as a restaurant. The taxi boats leave from Dubrovnik Harbour every half hour.
  • Most tourists congregate on the southern  Dalmatian islands , but those to the North – though often a bit cooler in temperature – can offer even more beautiful scenery and tend to be less crowded in the height of summer.  Rab  – which can be reached by ferry from Rijeka in just over an hour – is one of the most attractive. The greenest of all islands, it is covered with pine forests and also has sandy beaches. Rab Town has Roman and Greek buildings, with numerous churches and historic squares.
  • English is not widely spoken, beyond those involved in the tourist industry. Try and  learn a few words of Croat  if possible, which will get you a long way in shops and restaurants. Otherwise, Italian is the most widely understood Western-European language, due to the proximity of the country and also because Croatia has long been a popular summer holiday-spot for Italians.
  • Be sure to pack your bathing suit in your carry-on for your Croatia flight: Regardless of what time of year you’re traveling, Croatia’s 1,103 miles of attractive Adriatic beaches will have you hitting the sandy shore in no time.  Check out the pebbly shores of  Makarska  at Brela Beach, or head out to the island of  Brac  to spend a day in the sun on the gravel shores of Zlatni Rat Beach before returning to your  Zagreb hotel  or  hotel in Dubrovnik .
  • The county of  Dalmatia  and  Split  makes up the largest region in Croatia, known for its ancient ruins and colorful history.  Dubrovnik is the ancient city of Dalmatia, and has hordes of history buffs booking cheap flights to Croatia in order to scale the old city walls and mosey in the footsteps of soldiers who defended the city hundreds of years ago.  Split hotels  make it easy to explore the nearby tourist attractions.
  • Makarska  is a popular resort town and known for its weathered cobblestone streets, white pebble beaches and vibrant nightlife.  For interesting souvenirs to bring back on your return Croatia flight, pick up some seashells on Makarska shore. The shells are so revered there is a school dedicated solely to the preservation of the mollusk shell!
  • Still hungry after the in-flight service on your flight to Croatia? Croatian cuisine is hearty and predominantly fortified by heavy cheeses and meats.  Try Dalmatian or Istrian prosciutto, as well as sheep cheese from Pag and Lika.

Finding Flights from Croatia

Flying out of Croatia can be quite convenient. If you’re leaving from Zagreb, use the modern ZET bus to get to the airport inexpensively and efficiently. With departures every 35 minutes, it’s easy to plan your arrival at the airport. Dubrovnik and Split also have bus services to the airport, but their schedules may vary. Taxis are widely available around all three airports.

Since American travelers have to stop in another European city anyway, it can be convenient to plan to spend a few days there. Most major cities, including Paris, Munich and London, are between one and three hours away from Croatia by air, and several flights depart daily. Croatia’s close proximity to Italy makes it particularly easy to tour both. Croatia Airlines and Vueling have multiple flights from Croatia to Rome each day, with most departing from Split.

What’s the weather like in Croatia?

Croatia has mild seasons all year, thanks to its coastal Mediterranean location. The summers are dry and hot, averaging temperatures around 80 degrees. The winters are fairly mild, with temperatures above freezing.

How long is the flight to Croatia?

Direct flights from the United States to Croatia are essentially nonexistent, so travel times can vary wildly depending on how many transfers you need to make and the length of each layover. Flights from New York tend to be the shortest at about 10 hours, while flights from Chicago and Miami tend to be closer to 11 or 12 hours. The shortest flights from Los Angeles tend to be around 13 hours.

Which airlines fly to Croatia?

There are three major international airports in Croatia, located in Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split. Although specifics may vary, all three work with a variety of European and Asian airlines. Some of the larger names include British Airways, Vueling and Lufthansa. Croatia Airlines is another popular regional choice, with numerous flights between Croatia and other European countries.

What should you pack for a flight to Croatia?

Unless you’re traveling in the dead of winter, beach wear is probably the most important thing to pack. In additional to the standard swimsuits, beach towels and bottles of sunscreen, toss in a pair of water shoes. Croatia’s beaches are notoriously rocky and can be painful to walk on barefoot. Bring along some sandals for getting to and from the beach, and pack some comfortable walking shoes. If you’re traveling in the wet winter months, bring along a raincoat and some waterproof boots. Even in the summer, pack some warmer layers if you plan to visit the mountains as it can be significantly cooler there. Although casual, comfortable clothing is ideal for most tourist activities, pack one or two more stylish outfits in case you want to visit an upscale restaurant or go dancing at one of Croatia’s hip nightclubs. Bring along a phrasebook as well, as not all locals speak English.

What are some things to do in Croatia?

Many Croatian activities center around the beaches and coastline. The rocky pebble beaches create crystal clear waters, so snorkeling and scuba diving are particularly popular. Keep an eye out for shipwrecks and historical artifacts that dot the shoreline. Sailing is another popular activity. Hire a passenger boat or take a ride on the ferry to explore the numerous islands, such as quaint, old-fashioned Brac. Inland Croatia is also home to numerous natural wonders. Tour Plitvice Lakes National Park, which features stunning waterfalls and tranquil lakes. This park features a network of wood plank trails for easy navigation. For a more strenuous hike, head to Paklenica National Park, which is home to the country’s highest peak and boasts world-class rock climbing opportunities for more adventurous travelers. If you’re a history buff, you’ll find an endless amount of sites to explore. Visit the Old City quarter of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring buildings dating to the 13th century. Tour the walled city of Motovun in Istria, where you can stroll along the top of medieval fortifications before stopping in at one of the popular restaurants or cafes. Check out Zadar, a stunning seaside town that features Roman ruins built more than 2,000 years ago. Croatia is also known for its fine foods, particularly wine and olive oil. Visit one of the country’s high-quality olive oil producers, such as Oleum Viride, Chiavalon or Kabola Estate, to learn more about how the oil is produced and to experience a tasting of the different varieties. Take a wine tour of the island of Hvar to learn more about traditional winemaking techniques and taste delicious local vintages. For dinner, head to the coast and savor the taste of fresh seafood from one of the many restaurants featuring fresh-caught local fish.

You can also opt to acquire the co-branded Chase Aeroplan ® Credit Card, which earns 3x points per dollar spent on dining, groceries, and Air Canada, as well as 1x point per $1 spent everywhere else.

Bottom Line: Aeroplan is one of the easiest and best Star Alliance programs to use to book business class flights to Europe.

ANA Mileage Club

United Polaris business class 787 10 window seats HND LAX

The second Star Alliance program to make the list is ANA Mileage Club . ANA is primarily known for its hard product (the actual seat you fly in) and its competitive award chart when flying on its own and partner award flights.

One of the main downsides when using ANA miles is that you must book round-trip partner airline flights. Programs like Aeroplan give you more flexibility by allowing you to book one-way partner airline flights — not the case with ANA. Unless you’re flying on an ANA award flight, you must book a round-trip flight.

Hot Tip:  Business class award flights are where ANA really shines —  88,000 miles is one of the lowest award prices in this list for flights from the U.S. to Croatia.

Here are a couple of example flights to Croatia that you can book when you have enough ANA miles in your account:

  • Chicago (ORD) – Amsterdam (AMS) – Zagreb (ZAG) for 88,000 ANA miles in United and Croatia Airlines business class
  • Houston (IAH) – London (LHR) – Split (SPU) for 55,000 ANA miles in United and Croatia Airlines economy

When booking flights to Croatia using ANA miles, the steps below will be helpful in the booking process:

  • Confirm the same availability on ANA.

Earning ANA Mileage Club Miles

It’s easy to earn ANA Mileage Club miles because ANA has partnerships with American Express and Marriott Bonvoy. The points that you earn in this program can be transferred directly to ANA. There is an ANA co-branded card, however, it’s not available for the U.S. market. With that said, point transfers from American Express and Marriott will be the main way to earn ANA miles.

If you have American Express points, you’ll want to transfer those points to ANA first because point transfers take 2-3 days at a 1:1 ratio. Those of you with Marriott points will need to wait 7 days for the transfer at a 3:1 ratio.

Bottom Line: If you do not need flexibility, booking round-trip business class partner airlines to Croatia using ANA miles is a great deal.

Asiana Airlines Asiana Club

Turkish Airlines Boeing 777 Business

For flights to Croatia, it’s hard to beat the award pricing offered by Star Alliance partner Asiana Airlines Asiana Club. This program is primarily known for its extremely competitive partner award chart.

One of the reasons you likely don’t hear much about Asiana Airlines is because its partner award flight booking process is cumbersome. You have to call Asiana Airlines to book partner flights as they cannot be booked online.

Hot Tip:  Asiana Airlines has the lowest first class award pricing to Europe. However, you won’t be able to fly first class all the way from the U.S. to Croatia. If you’re eyeing first class, flying Lufthansa to Frankfurt or Munich will be your bet, although fuel surcharges will be high.

The Star Alliance has a ton of its members based in Europe, so you’ll have a number of award flights options from the U.S. including:

  • San Francisco (SFO) – Istanbul (IST) – Zagreb (ZAG) for 80,000 Asiana miles in Turkish Airlines business class
  • Denver (DEN) – London (LHR) – Split (SPU) for 50,000 Asiana miles in United and Croatia Airlines economy

Booking Star Alliance award flights to Croatia using Asiana Airlines miles requires a few additional steps in the process as follows:

  • Search for Star Alliance partner flights on United.
  • Call Asiana Airlines at 800-227-4262 between 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. PST on Monday-Friday.
  • Book the flight over the phone.

Earning Asiana Airlines Miles

You’ll likely have a tough time earning Asiana Airlines miles because they only partner with Marriott Bonvoy . However, Asiana Airlines offers co-branded credit cards that earn miles directly with your spend. The best strategy is to put your spend on a combination of Asiana Airlines and Marriott credit cards.

For those of you already with Marriott points, the point transfer to Asiana Airlines takes 4 days at a 3:1 ratio. Separately, with every 60,000 Marriott points that you transfer you’ll receive a 5,000-mile bonus.

Bottom Line:  Asiana Airlines is a great option if you’re looking to fly in a premium cabin and are able to earn Asiana Airlines miles.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

British Airways First Class 787-9 Seat View

Another Oneworld alliance program to consider using to fly to Croatia is Cathay Pacific. One of the best ways to use Cathay Pacific Asia Miles is to book British Airways award flights due to the taxes and fees. When you book British Airways flights with Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, you’ll pay ~$600 roundtrip instead of $1,000 round-trip for flights to Europe.

The primary downside when using Asia Miles to book partner award flights is that the pricing isn’t that competitive. As you’ll see in this list, there are cheaper ways to use points and miles to fly transatlantic in economy, business, and first class.

Hot Tip:  Reference the Asia Miles Standard Award if you’re flying 1 Oneworld airline partner. From there, add 5,000 miles to the cost of the award flight that’s based on the distance of your itinerary.

Examples of award flights that you can book with Cathay Pacific Asia Miles include:

  • Boston (MIA) – Madrid (MAD) – Zagreb (ZAG) for 100,000 Cathay Pacific miles in Iberia business class
  • New York (JFK) – London (LHR) for 150,000 Cathay Pacific miles in British Airways first class

The process to book award flights using Asia Miles is dependent on the airline. For flights to Croatia, you can book Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, and Iberia online. All other airline partners that fly between the U.S. and Croatia (i.e. American Airlines) require a phone call to book the flight:

  • Search for partner airline flights on asiamiles.com.
  • Or call Cathay Pacific at 866-892-2598 to confirm award availability.
  • Book the flight online or over the phone.

Earning Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific has partnerships with American Express, Capital One, Citi, and Marriott Bonvoy — in other words, it’s easy to earn Cathay Pacific Asia Miles . Separately, Cathay Pacific offers a co-branded credit card for the U.S. market, meaning that the spend you put on this card earns Cathay Pacific Asia miles.

If you have a stash of American Express , Capital One , Citi , and/or Marriott points , you’ll want to keep tabs on the transfer ratios and transfer times. American Express points transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio, Capital One Miles transfers take up to 3 days at a 1:1 ratio, Citi point transfers take 24 hours at a 1:1 ratio, and Marriott point transfers take 5 days at a 3:1 ratio.

Bottom Line: The way to receive the most value with this Cathay Pacific redemption is to fly British Airways. The fuel surcharges will still be there, however, they will be much lower than what you’d otherwise pay.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank

Air France 777 Business Class Business Class Cabin From Front

The last program to make our list is Japan Airlines Mileage Bank . Japan Airlines routinely offers some of the lowest award rates on its own and partner airline flights. For award flights to Croatia, Japan Airlines has one of the lowest economy, business, and first class prices to Croatia.

Japan Airlines is a program you should use, but miles are hard to earn in the Mileage Bank program. If you can generate Japan Airlines miles, you’ll open yourself up to a number of high-value award flight options.

Hot Tip:  Japan Airlines has a partnership with SkyTeam member Air France. This means that you can use Japan Airlines miles to book an Air France award flight.

The Mileage Bank program offers a number of interesting options to book flights between the U.S. and Croatia including:

  • New York (JFK) – Madrid (MAD) – Split (SPU) for 50,000 Japan Airlines miles in Iberia economy
  • Washington (IAD) – Paris (CDG) – Zagreb (ZAG) for 110,000 Japan Airlines miles in Air France business class

Booking Japan Airlines partner award flights is easy. Just follow these steps:

  • Search for Oneworld flights on British Airways.
  • Search for saver level Air France flights on Delta.
  • Confirm the same availability on Japan Airlines.

Earning Japan Airlines Miles

There are not a ton of ways to earn Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles because the airline only partners with Marriott. Japan Airlines has a co-branded credit card, however, the card has a low welcome offer and earn rates.

For those of you already holding Marriott points, the point transfers to Japan Airlines take 2 days at a 3:1 ratio. You’ll also receive a 5,000-mile bonus with every 60,000 Marriott points that you transfer.

Bottom Line: Japan Airlines offers one of the cheapest ways to fly transatlantic first class. Air France first class can’t be booked with Japan Airlines miles, but you can book American Airlines and British Airways first class.

Iberia Avios

American Airlines 787-9 Flagship Business Class seat 4L rear view

Yet another Oneworld airline partner to check out is Iberia. The Iberia Avios (miles) program is likely familiar to some U.S. travelers because you can cheaply book domestic American Airlines flights using Avios.

What many people are not fans of with Iberia is that American Airlines flights must be booked round-trip. If your goal is flexibility and you want to fly American Airlines, other Oneworld programs offer greater flexibility.

Hot Tip:  The longer the distance of your flight, the more miles you’ll need. Both Iberia’s own and partner airline flights are distance-based.

Examples of flights to Croatia that you can book with Iberia Avios include:

  • Boston (BOS) – Madrid (MAD) – Zagreb (ZAG) for 88,000 Iberia Avios Iberia business class off-peak
  • New York (JFK) – Milan (MXP) for 100,000 Iberia Avios in American Airlines business class

The Iberia award flight booking process will be different depending on which airline you fly:

  • Search for American Airlines and Iberia flights on British Airways.
  • Confirm the same availability on Iberia.
  • Search for Royal Air Maroc flights on Royal Air Maroc.
  • Call Iberia at 800-772-4642 to confirm award availability.
  • Book American Airlines and Iberia flights online.
  • Book Royal Air Maroc flights over the phone.

For the Milan flight, you’ll need to book a cheap points or cash flight to continue on to Croatia. Croatia Airlines operates the MXP-ZAG route seasonally for 12,500 Avianca LifeMiles in economy class. You can transfer points from Membership Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, and ThankYou to LifeMiles.

Alternatively, easyJet operates the MXP-SPU route seasonally. This flight can be had for as little at $33 one-way, and you can use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to cover the flight when booked through the Chase Travel Portal . If you don’t mind flying an ultra-low-cost carrier, this is likely your best bet.

Earning Iberia Avios

Earning Iberia Avios is extremely easy because Iberia has partnerships with American Express, Chase, and Marriott. In addition, Iberia has a co-branded credit card for the U.S. market. The spend that you put on this card earns Iberia Avios.

If you’re looking to earn American Express , Chase , and/or Marriott points , American Express and Chase points transfer to Iberia at a 1:1 ratio within 24 hours. Marriott transfers also happen within 24 hours, however, the ratio is 3:1. With Marriott, you’ll want to transfer 60,000 points at a time so you’ll receive the 5,000-mile bonus.

Bottom Line: The cheapest way to fly transatlantic business class in this list is with Iberia. During the off-peak season, you’ll only need 68,000 Iberia Avios for a round-trip flight.

While not all programs book to a final destination of Croatia, there are still great options that you can get you to an airport within an easy connection to Croatia simply by purchasing an additional short flight. These flights may be great if you have miles or points to utilize with a specific program.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

American Airlines A321T Flagship Business seats 6A and 6C

Our first U.S. airline program is Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan . Long-known for the ability to book a stopover on a one-way flight, another thing you may not have considered is using Alaska miles to fly American Airlines to Europe. Alaska Airlines has other airline partners, however, you’ll likely receive the most value booking American Airlines award flights.

Without a doubt, the primary drawback with Alaska Airlines is that it can be tough to earn Alaska Airlines miles. Another downside is the partner award booking fee, similar to Avianca, however, the cost is nominal.

Hot Tip:  American Airlines doesn’t fly all the way to Croatia. Instead, you’ll need to book an additional flight after landing at your European destination.

For those of you with Alaska Airlines miles , check out the examples below for the types of flights that you can book:

  • Charlotte (CLT) – Frankfurt (FRA) for 45,000 Alaska Airlines miles in American Airlines economy
  • New York (JFK) – London (LHR) for 170,000 Alaska Airlines miles in American Airlines first class

To help you with your flight booking process, reference the steps below when using Alaska miles to book an award flight:

  • Search for flights on Alaska Airlines.
  • Pay the taxes and fees, including the $12.50 partner award flight booking fee.

Since American Airlines doesn’t fly all the way to Croatia, you’ll need to book an additional jumper flight from Frankfurt or London to Croatia. You can book LHR-ZAG for just 7,500 British Airways Avios in economy class — British Airways is an American Express transfer partner , Chase transfer partner , and a Marriott transfer partner . Alternatively, you can fly LHR-ZAG and LHR-SPU (seasonally) on Croatia Airlines for 12,500 Avianca LifeMiles.

Croatia runs year-round service between FRA and DBV, SPU, and ZAG airports. Further, Lufthansa flies year-round to ZAG and seasonally to SPU. Both of these airlines are in the Star Alliance, and the route can also be booked using LifeMiles as well. However, this route only costs 8,000 as it’s a shorter flight from FRA than LHR.

Earning Alaska Airlines Miles

Alaska Airlines miles can be challenging to earn as they only partner with Marriott Bonvoy. However, Alaska Airlines offers co-branded credit cards and the spend on these credit cards will directly earn Alaska Airlines miles.

For those of you with Marriott points, the transfer takes 2-4 days at a 3:1 ratio. If you’re looking for additional Alaska Airlines miles earned from Marriott transfers, here are the Marriott credit cards we like:

Recommended Marriott Cards

There are a number of Marriott credit cards available which we cover in our in-depth guide.

Bottom Line: The best value for Alaska Airlines redemption is to book economy flights. Business class pricing is middle-of-the-road relative to the other options in this list.

British Airways Executive Club

For U.S. travelers, Oneworld partner British Airways is known for the ability to book cheap, short-haul American Airlines flights within the U.S. British Airways uses a distance-based award chart, so the less distance that you fly, the fewer miles that you’ll need.

Although this doesn’t affect Aer Lingus flights, British Airways recently devalued its partner airline award flight chart. The number of miles required for award flights didn’t increase across the board, however, some airline routes require additional miles.

Hot Tip:  Flying Aer Lingus from Boston (BOS) – Dublin (DUB) during off-peak dates is the cheapest way to fly transatlantic. If you book this flight, you’ll only need 13,000 British Airways Avios (miles) each way.

Examples of award flights that you can book with British Airways Avios include:

  • Boston (BOS) – Dublin (DUB) f or 26,000 British Airways Avios in Aer Lingus economy
  • Chicago (ORD) – Dublin (DUB) for 100,000 British Airways Avios in Aer Lingus business class

To book Aer Lingus flights using British Airways Avios, use these steps:

  • Search for Aer Lingus flights on British Airways.

For these flights, you’ll need to purchase a separate, cheap flight from Dublin to Croatia. Aer Lingus flies nonstop from DUB to DBV and SPU seasonally, and you can use just 10,000 Aer Lingus Avios to fly one-way on-peak or 8,500 Avios off-peak. You can transfer to Aer Lingus from Membership Rewards, Ultimate Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy.

Earning British Airways Avios

You’ll have no issues earning British Airways Avios because the airline partners with American Express, Capital One, Chase, and Marriott Bonvoy. The points earned in these programs can be transferred directly to British Airways. In addition, British Airways has a co-branded credit card with a sizeable welcome offer available to the U.S. market.

Transfer ratios and transfer times differ across these programs. With that said, American Express, Capital One, and Chase points transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott point transfers take 24 hours at a 3:1 ratio. If you transfer 60,000 Marriott points, you’ll receive a 5,000-mile bonus. In short, these are the Chase cards that you should consider:

Bottom Line: If economy is your style, you can’t beat using less than 30,000 Avios to fly Aer Lingus economy across the Atlantic.

Etihad Guest

The second airline not in a major airline alliance to make the list is Etihad. Its Etihad Guest loyalty program is fantastic, especially for those looking to fly in a premium cabin. American Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Royal Air Maroc are airline partners to keep an eye on.

It’s not all great news with Etihad, as partner award flights need to be booked by phone. The process isn’t as bad as it sounds, however, it’s not as simple as booking the flight online.

Hot Tip:  Etihad Guest partners with an array of airline partners. Many of these partners have prices in their award charts that you simply will not find as low anywhere else.

American Airlines and Royal Air Maroc fly a number of routes that will get you close to Croatia. From there, you’ll book a cheap cash or points flight to get the rest of the way.

  • Miami (MIA) – Milan (MXP) for 100,000 Etihad miles in American Airlines business class
  • Washington (IAD) – Casablanca (CMN) for 88,000 Etihad miles in Royal Air Maroc business class

As mentioned, a phone call is required to book Etihad partner airline flights:

  • Search for American Airlines flights on British Airways and Qantas.
  • Search for Brussels Airlines flights on United.
  • Call Etihad at 877-690-0767 to confirm award availability.

Flying MIA-MXP? See the above “Iberia Avios” section on booking hopper flights from MXP to Croatia — we’ll go in-depth there!

There are no non-stop flights between CMN and Croatia, so you have 2 options: fly to another European city nearby, hang out there for a few days, and then head to Croatia, or fly on a 1-stop itinerary to Croatia. One of the best ways to book a 1-stop itinerary is by using Iberia Avios to fly via Madrid. Flying CMN-MAD-ZAG costs 12,000 Iberia Avios off-peak or 13,250 on-peak in economy class.

You can transfer Membership Rewards , Ultimate Rewards , and Marriott Bonvoy points to Iberia Avios. Plus, you can transfer British Airways Avios to Iberia Avios so long as both accounts have been open for 90+ days.

Earning Etihad Guest Miles

Etihad has partnerships with American Express, Capital One, Citi, and Marriott. For this reason, it’s super easy to earn Etihad Guest miles . The points that you earn in these programs can be transferred directly to Etihad.

For those of you looking to transfer points, American Express points transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio, Capital One Miles transfers take 36 hours at a 1:1 ratio, Citi transfers take 7 days at a 1:1 ratio, and Marriott point transfers take 3 days at a 1:1 ratio. With Marriott transfers, you’ll receive a 5,000-mile bonus with every 60,000 points that you transfer.

Bottom Line: 88,000 miles for business round-trip on Royal Air Maroc is one of the cheapest transatlantic business class flights that you’ll find.

Although you can’t fly nonstop to Croatia from the U.S., it’s an easy 1-stop flight. The country is incredibly beautiful and should certainly be added to your dream travel list.

To wrap things up, earn transferable points before booking your next trip to Croatia. American Express, Capital One, Chase, Citi, and Marriott each have airline partners that will help you to book an incredible trip to this eastern European country.

18 things you need to know before visiting Croatia

Mary Novakovich

Mar 17, 2024 • 7 min read

travel to croatia flights

Plan the perfect Croatia trip with these top tips © TerryPrince / Getty Images

With its glittering coastline, 1244 islands, endlessly fascinating cities and extraordinarily dramatic landscapes, Croatia has been steadily making its way up people’s must-go lists.

Naturally, tourists are drawn to those beautiful Adriatic beaches that easily hold their own against their Mediterranean rivals. But inland Croatia is just as captivating, from the hilltop villages of Istria to the elegantly buzzing capital, Zagreb .

Don't book your flights just yet though – first, make the most of our planning tips covering everything you need to know about health, safety and etiquette before you go.

People swimming in pools fed by waterfalls

1. Don’t overstretch yourself when planning an itinerary

It might be tempting to squeeze in as many destinations as possible into one trip, but you won’t be doing yourself any favors unless you’re staying for at least two weeks. If you’re planning to visit more than one Adriatic island, think realistically about how much time you can spend in each place and how you will be getting around .

Check the schedule of the national ferry operator,  Jadrolinija , if you intend to do some island-hopping. Croatia has an extensive bus network, but factor in some long journey times if you’re traveling along the Adriatic coast.

2.  Croatia's currency is the euro

Although Croatia joined the EU in 2013, the euro was only introduced as the national currency on the January 1, 2023. The Croatian kuna is no longer in use, and if you happen to have any of the old currency, you'll need to go to the Croatian National Bank to exchange them.

3. Expect to tip at least 10% in restaurants

Croatia’s tipping culture is more laid-back than in other countries. Having said that, it’s customary to leave at least 10% in restaurants and for beauty and spa treatments. In bars and cafes, just round up the bill. Tour guides appreciate a few euros at the end of a tour, and taxi drivers don’t expect a tip, but, again, if you want to round up a fare to the next euro, it’s appreciated. If you’re filling up your car and notice a few students cleaning car windscreens, consider giving them a couple of euros as they’re working for tips only.

A woman cycles along a coastal path

4. Croatia is generally considered a safe place to travel

Croatia is a safe country with low levels of violent crime. The most prevalent issue for tourists is pickpocketing, but even that’s on a much lower scale than in other European countries. Solo women travelers should be safe on their own, although it’s wise to ask your accommodation provider if there are any areas in the vicinity that are best avoided. When using taxis, all travelers should make certain they’re using a licensed car either from an official taxi rank or ordered from your hotel. Uber operates in most major towns and cities, including Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split .

5. Some caution is recommended for LGBTIQ+ travelers

In this relatively conservative country, homosexuality is tolerated, but LGBTIQ+ travelers should be discreet. Public displays of affection could raise a few eyebrows, and some travelers have experienced hostile reactions. Zagreb’s gay scene is growing, however, and both Zagreb and Split hold Gay Pride festivals every June.

6. Bring some swimming shoes

Most of Croatia’s beaches are pebbly or rocky and can be hard to enjoy in bare feet. Just pick up a pair of those neoprene or plastic swimming shoes you see in all the resorts, and you’ll also be protecting your feet from sea urchins that lurk under rocks and pebbles.

7. Nudity at the beach is pretty standard

Naturist beaches are popular in Croatia, and sometimes you won’t know you’re on one until people start stripping off. Most are marked with FKK – the German phrase “Frei-Körper-Kultur,” meaning free body culture – which isn't surprising as Germans make up some of the biggest numbers of tourists in Croatia. Away from the FKK beaches, topless bathing is quite common.

8. Dodge the crowds in Dubrovnik by timing your visit carefully

There could be times when up to 8000 cruise ship passengers might descend on Dubrovnik in one day. That’s the cue to stay away from the Old Town  within the city walls until they leave in the late afternoon. Keep an eye on the Dubrovnik Port Authority’s website for cruise arrivals and the online crowd monitoring system that predicts the numbers of visitors.

9. Wi-fi is readily available

Croatia is part of EU roaming, which is handy if you have a contract that allows you to use your data abroad. It’s easy to find wi-fi in cafes and bars – just ask the server for the password ( šifra ).

People in swimsuits sunbathe on the pier in Adriatic coast with sailboats, ship and houses in the distance behind them

10. Swimwear is for the beach, not the town

If you’re visiting churches and other sacred sites, keep your shoulders covered and avoid bare thighs. If you’re wearing a hat, take it off when you’re in a church. Even though dress codes are relaxed on the coast, Split, Dubrovnik and Hvar have passed laws against walking around the city in swimwear or bare-chested. Croatians like to dress smartly and take great pride in their appearance, so do as they do and avoid looking scruffy.

11.  Don’t get drunk in public

Croatia has developed a reputation as a place to party, which has led to some areas being inundated with badly behaved drunken tourists. After years of enduring this, the mayor of Hvar Town had enough. In 2017, the destination started to issue fines of up to €700 for public drunkenness and things like taking a drunken nap in a public place, such as on a park bench. Split introduced fines of up to €300 in 2023, placing signs in the city center reminding people that public drinking is not allowed, and that no one should be urinating on the walls of Diocletian's Palace .

12. Get to know the Croatian character

Croatians can be quite reserved people, sometimes appearing brusque. It’s nothing personal, which you'll realize when you get to know them better, and the initial reserve melts to reveal a warm and friendly side.

13. Be tactful when talking about Croatia’s war of independence

The 1990s war that splintered the former Yugoslavia is a topic that needs careful handling. If people show a willingness to talk about it, then by all means ask sensible questions. But don’t be intrusive, and bear in mind that Croatians won’t take too kindly to being called either Yugoslav or Balkan. Similarly, in this predominantly Catholic country, be mindful of making loud statements against religion.

14. You can drink the tap water

Tap water in Croatia is perfectly safe and very drinkable, and you can refill your reusable water bottles at public drinking fountains.

A red car drive around a bend with Dubrovnik in the background

15. Keep your lights on if driving during winter months

If you’re driving in Croatia from November to April, it’s compulsory to have your lights on during daylight hours as well as at night.

16. Croatia has occasional earthquakes

Croatia has a history of earthquakes going back centuries, but two recent ones in 2020 caused significant damage. The quake that shook Zagreb damaged thousands of buildings, many of which are in the old town, including the cathedral. Soon after, the city of Petrinja, about an hour’s drive south of Zagreb, was severely damaged in a quake, and aftershocks rippled throughout the region. If an earthquake happens while you're there, follow local guidance.

17. There are still some landmines

There are still parts of the country in the hinterlands of Northern Dalmatia and Lika where landmines remain from the war of independence, but these will be signposted with a skull and crossbones symbol. Don’t go anywhere near them.

18. Take out travel insurance

Dial 112 for general emergencies, 192 for police, and 194 for an ambulance. If you fall ill in Croatia and you're an EU citizen with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a UK citizen with a Global Health Insurance Card, you’re entitled to a vastly reduced price for health care . But even with this cover, you should still take out travel insurance.

Top 5 airlines serving from Charlotte to Croatia

Boarding was good, was able to get on early and get settled in . Loved the glass of wine before take off. Once in the air the service was amazing, from the snacks, drinks and the food was good. The flight attendants were very good and attentive. Love flying with Delta..

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

On 2 different flights the wifi was horrible and there was no drink or snack service.

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

Flight was late. Club was full. Experience is exactly what I expected.

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

The flight was delayed instead of leaving at 11 it left at 12.20

United WiFi is consistently unusable (it can take 10 mins to load a single web page). If you need Wifi to do work, be prepared to lose half a day of productivity.

We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight.

Good dinner and nice plane.Smootz flight. Breakfast had no sweet option. Seats hardly reclined.

Positive: Entertainment via phone on the short was great and my first time. Good food and wine and head phones for free. Negative: Seat hardly reclined on the long flight. Breakfast was an egg with a bun. No egg choices and rather have something sweet like bun/jam and Youghurt.

Awful. I got stuck next to a person carrying a dog and behind someone with a dog. People need to board these dogs downstairs. The cabin is crowded enough with your pets

We sat on the plane for 1 hour because the airline was short handed could not be unloading.

Flight delayed 3 times. We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane. The first plane had mechanical issues. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. No snack or beverage. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be. Then the next gate change. Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage. We had to wait again for the okay to the pilot to take off so we were on the runway for another 20 min. Overall, we were delayed over 2 hours which felt like 4 hours.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

I had trouble finding a boarding pass because I had an hour between Flights and American did not see my flight I believe because I was ticketed through KAYAK. I did not have enough time to go to the desk before boarding so I went to the desk and told them while I was boarding and they had a boarding pass for me within three minutes. Nice. I paid extra to have more legroom and it is definitely worth it for a six hour flight. I would’ve paid for a decent dinner, but they didn’t offer anything but a snack box —not good for six hours.

Charlotte airport is miserable. For American I always have to connect from the end of terminal E to the end of terminal B and the stupid moving walkways are always broken. And the flights to all seem of least importance so they never leave on time in either direction.

Baggage claim took too long and priority bags were not delivered first.

Overall a fiasco. My first flight was delayed so late that I would have missed my connection. I had to cancel the flight and reschedule for the next morning. I took over half an hour to retrieve my luggage. I already paid $30 for checked in luggage for the flight I didn't take. When I checked in for my new flight on app I paid another $30. I went to the kiosk for my luggage tags and was charged $40. (My baggage didn't make it on the connecting flight but was delivered at 10:00 that night.) Later that day I requested a refund of the baggage fees. I received an email stating my refund was complete in the amount of $234.62. I didn't realize that meant my return flight was canceled until I tried to check in at the counter. They had refunded the wrong thing. It costed me $381.10 to book a new flight home. At least my baggage made it home with me.

First of all , lucky I caught our flight changes and we actually flew into chicago then Fort Myers

The experience with American Airlines was terrible from beginning to end. Flight 1210 from Cancun to Charlotte was delayed three times. AA customer service at the CUN airport could not provide information on why or how to accommodate me if I missed my connecting flight at CLT due to the delays. Upon arrival to CLT, de-boarding the plane was a horrible experience. You all should have allowed passengers with departing connecting flights within the hour, to get off the plane first! It caused so many passengers to lose valuable time waiting to get off the plane, and then the long lines in customs! American Airlines knew passengers had to make connecting flights and still chose not to hold the plane? I missed Flight 2758 from CLT to DCA for that reason. Waiting three more hours for the next - Flight 1269 from CLT to DCA. Once again another delay at the last possible minute before boarding due to the plane going out of service/maintenance. Once the new plane boarded, we sat on the tarmac for 40min. I did not arrive to DCA until 12:33am. I spent over 12hours at the airport and I plan to never fly American Airlines again.

Poor availability of food. Cold cabin temperature. Extremely long waiting time for a flight attendant to respond to a call button signal.

Used to love Lufthansa, but Rowe are too close together in Economy and passengers are allowed to recline their seats so far back it is impossible for those behind them to even reach for carry-on essentials during flight - except for meal service when flight attendants ask for seat backs to be raised, we can’t sleep on planes so this flight was most uncomfortable ever! Rod Rose

So far so good. I missed my flight because of the Lufthansa diversion. United helped me to figure out how to get accommodations from Lufthansa for my long layover. They help me book appropriate onward flight.

Horrible crowding on the seats, headphones provided did not fit or work in the entertainment center, seriously the most uncomfortable flight I have taken in a LONG time. The people in front of me were literally 5 inches from my face the entire flight. Did they change their seats recently? I remember it being tight but wow this was a whole new level. Also I am a 5'3" small woman so I can't even imagine a larger person dealing with that for 11 hrs.

Seat controls of lights were broken, and only 1 of the 2 seat TVs ever worked on the long flight. On the short flight there were no USB connections, on the long one they were difficult to access. Part of my meal was frozen, though the hot portion was good.

Lufthansa fails at mentioning no luggage when booking through points. We had to pay added fees to take checked bags to Europe for 2 weeks. The staff at check in were not helpful at all. told us "if we don't like it, then book another flight". Food was bad, they ran out of half the options. Vegetarian was terrible. The flight crew was nice, and tried to make it work ok.

Always a pleasure to deal with United's helpful and knowledgeable staff

Always a pleasure to deal with United's helpful and knowledgeable saff

My school age daughter was not sat near me. We left almost an hour late. Therefore arriving late and missing another flight. Since it was not a connecting flight there was nothing Lufthansa could do about it. After the selay in take off and arrival we waited almost an hour for baggage claim. There was zero concern for my inconvenience. I asked if we could insure being seated together on the return. They stated no because we booked through Kayak. I typically love Lufthansa. This was very disappointing.

This flight is always a cramped bus. The gate area was inadequate and announcements were hard to hear. The flight was delayed 45 minutes to an hour by a broken aircraft door, making our total delay from Vilnius 5 hours.

Great seats assigned and comfortable, movies are good, food is delicious, great experience. No delays and they prioritize boarding children with parents which is plus.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

Fare was much lower with a layover in London as I was able avoid numerous landing fees that would have been added to the ticket price had I booked a direct flight to Amsterdam.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

The crew on this flight were attentive, efficient and friendly. It really made for an enjoyable flight.

The crew on this flight were excellent. They were friendly and attentive. It really made the flight more enjoyable.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

Seat layout, flight/club attendant service, food variety and quality could have been better. Business class Standard is visibly low compared with 6 other airlines that we have traveled for the past two years.

Traveling from the U.S. to Croatia, one of Europe’s buzziest destinations, typically involved a change—or more—of planes, but two American carriers are about to make the trip faster and easier for travelers based stateside, particularly those living on the East Coast.

Delta and United recently announced plans for non-stop service from the New York area to Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and, as a filming location for Game of Thrones, a magnet for hundreds of thousands of fans of the show in recent years.

The nonstop flights will begin this summer, with Delta initiating its service from JFK to Dubrovnik on July 2. United launches its Dubrovnik route from Newark on July 8.

Stradun, the main street in Dubrovnik's Old Town.

Wanda Radetti, founder and president of Tasteful Croatian Journeys , which specializes in custom itineraries to the country ( Condé Nast Traveler has listed her as the World Top Destination Specialist for Croatia since 2006), welcomed the news about the routes. “We believe an itinerary that allows clients to take advantage of those direct flights for both arrival and departure will be a popular option now,” she says. Radetti’s company has already received requests for the flights from clients who want less travel time and transfers.

For these reasons Radetti had often recommended that her Croatia-bound clients book non-stop flights from the USA to Venice, which is close to Istria in the northern part of the country. “The areas perfectly complement each other due to their shared history, and cultural ties,” says Radetii. To take advantage of the new non-stops, Radetti says that she and her team have been working on several Dubrovnik-centric itineraries to give clients different options and ideas on how to best organize their trips.

Why your irs refund is late this year.

While the EU is planning to let qualified visitors from outside the bloc visit for leisure travel, Croatia opened its doors last month to those who can meet certain requirements: proof of full vaccination, proven immunity after having recovered from the disease, or a negative Covid test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival. (In addition to the requisite health documentation, travelers must also show that they’ve fully paid for a place to stay. For more details go the U.S. Embassy in Croatia site.)

Radetti said that even though travel to Croatia was possible last summer for Americans (who took the appropriate Covid test), the lack of direct flights “posed a challenge for many.” She anticipates that the new non-stops “will go a long way to increasing traveler confidence and encouraging bookings.”

The Delta flights, on Boeing 767-300 aircraft, will run four times a week (Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday from New York; Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday from Dubrovnik.) Delta One with full-flat beds and Delta Comfort + will be available in addition to the main cabin service.

United flights will depart Newark on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays; returning from Dubrovnik Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The service, on Boeing 767-300ER planes with 30 Polaris business-class seats, extends through October 2021.

A beach with a great view of Dubrovnik's Old Town.

As travelers plan to return to Croatia, what are they booking? Radetti says she’s seeing “an increase in requests for villas and private yacht charters, which we attribute to the overall trend of desiring more privacy and less interaction with people.” She says she’s also getting requests for more multi-generational and longer trips. “Rather than a week-long whirlwind vacation, we see 10, 14, even 21 days. We recently received a request for a two-month villa rental for the summer months. People seem to be more willing to splurge on something special. They have waited a long time for their holiday and want to make the most of it.”

Radetti says as EU travel begins to ramp up, early summer visitors may see “a quieter side of Dubrovnik. As the season wanes on, I would expect the city to grow more crowded. A significant factor will be whether cruising resumes and to what extent.”

Jet2 launches flights to European seaside resort known as the ‘cheaper alternative to Croatia’

Jet2 has launched new flights to a lesser-known holiday destination in Europe known as the "cheaper alternative to Croatia".

The passengers onboard the first flight on April 1 landed in a small city often compared to chic Monaco ... but without the huge price tag.

Jet2 has launched new flights from the UK to a lesser-known seaside resort

The new twice-weekly route links London Stansted to Tivat in Montenegro on Mondays and Thursdays.

The flights will continue throughout the summer and will last until October.

What's more, from next month, the airline will also fly to Tivat from Birmingham .

Those flights will be weekly until July when two will then be available until October.

The small city is home to sandy beaches with surprisingly refreshing water, making it one of the locals' favourite spots to visit during the hot summer months.

According to Tivat Travel there are "several natural fresh water streams flowing into the sea" which make the water colder than in other parts of the coast.

They add: "The water is pleasant and very refreshing, which is why this beach is a favourite among the local population."

The city's marina has also been described as "first-class" following recent renovation projects to turn it into a tourist destination.

Spanish attraction dupe compared to a wonder of the world that is free to visit

Travel experts Lonely Planet wrote: "The erstwhile-mediocre seaside town has undergone a major makeover – courtesy of the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of its old naval base into a first-class marina.

"[With] bobbing super yachts , a posh promenade and rows of swanky apartment blocks: visitors to Tivat could be forgiven for wondering if they're in Monaco or Montenegro."

Tivat also opens up Brits to the rest of Montenegro , with places like the picturesque Kotor Bay and the beach resort of Budva, as well as stunning hiking opportunities through the mountains.

Travel book writers Rough Guide listed the country as one of the most underrated in the world last year.

They wrote: "With gorgeous beaches, medieval villages that exude fairy-tale charm, and spectacular natural attractions – think towering mountains and lily-speckled lakes – it’s fair to say Montenegro won’t stay underrated for long."

Adding to the reasons to visit are the surprisingly cheap drinks and hotels, with beer available for an average of £2.14.

Meanwhile, a night for two in Tivat can be booked from as little as £19.

It's for these reasons that Montenegro is hailed as a more affordable alternative to Croatia .

Among those drawing the comparison are Love Exploring , who wrote: "Montenegro is a couple of decades behind many areas of Europe when it comes to price.

"Whether you’re looking at accommodation, transport, restaurants or bars, it's consistently considerably cheaper than Croatia and other hotspots."

The National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro has praised the new flights, having previously linked the city to Manchester with Jet2 last year.

The director of NTO Montenegro, Dr. Ana Tripković Marković, told Vijesti : "This year we were pleased with the news of the introduction of connections to Tivat from two more British cities, London and Birmingham.

"Through this company, Montenegro will be connected to the three largest cities in Great Britain during 2024."

Return flights to Tivat can be booked from £69 with the airline.

Tivat isn't the only destination set to get new Jet2 flights .

Holidaymakers in  Bournemouth  will have 16 new places to fly to starting from April next year, after the airline launched new routes.

Popular spots including  Spain , Turkey, Greece and Portugal are among the new destinations to be served.

Spain is going to get the majority of the new flights, with Alicante,  Ibiza , Menorca, Mallorca, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife all on the list.
