The trekkers have the option of choosing from  two distinct routes . The first one  (the most accessible)  starts at Pali village and takes you through a muddy field. From there, the hike takes you through wildflowers and forests.

The  most popular route  starts in  Gunjavane village and goes towards the Chor Darwaza.

The trek  distance  is about  5 kms one way  and can take around  3-3.5 hours  to reach the  top of the fort .

We recommend this trek in 2 days and camping overnight at the fort and enjoying the night sky.

The fort is divided into four significant sections: Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, Sanjeevani Machi, and Balekilla (the highest point of the fort).

  • Some FAQS about RAJGAD Trek

Best Season to visit : The best season to visit Rajgad is during the monsoon and the winter season. Trekking feels fantastic during the monsoons but trekkers should take precautions as the trek route gets very slippery. Winter season is ideal for camping at the fort. The temperatures get very low during the winters and a bonfire based campsite is a heavenly experience.

Routes : The way to Rajgad is via NASRAPUR Phata which is approximately 15 - 20 Kms from Katraj Tunnel and just 5kms from the Mcdonalds/Dominos outlet after the first toll on NH4. Reach NASRAPUR by NH 4, this is approx 35 kms from Pune Station. From Nasrapur travel westwards to reach the following base villages…..there are multiple base villages for this fort. I have mentioned 3 routes here [Gunjawane, Bhor and Pali] From Gunjawane the trek is a little bit tough as it leads to the Chor Darwaja and it takes almost 2 1/2 hours for trekking with 4-5 breaks during the trek. Inexperienced trekkers should go via Pali village as this trek is not that difficult as compared to the trek via Gunjawane. The Pali route will take you to the main door of the fort. Trek from Pali village is comparitively easy. So if you have elderly people or kids in your group, we recommend that you take this route. There's a way which goes to Torna along the ridges of Sahyadri Mountains from Rajgad. For the Bhor Route,  you will have to head towards bhor from NH4 and then from Bhor to Bhutonde. From Bhutonde village, a 3 -4 hours trek will take you to the Alu Darwaja of Rajgad. This route is not very popular, but if you want to experience something different, then, you should definitely try this.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:

Difficulty level is moderate. It takes approximately 2 1/2 hours to reach to the top via Pali and 3 1/2 hours via Gunjawane. The highest point of Rajgad is Balekilla which is a fort on Rajgad. Take plenty of water and some energy drinks with you as the trek is a bit tiring.

Food and Water on the fort:  It is always recommended that you carry your own drinking water from home. Atleast 3 litres per person for one day treks For food, the villagers on weekends do serve Poha, BHaji and Zhunka Bhakari at Padmavati temple on the fort. But again, do take some snacks packed from home.

Camping Info: Rajgad fort is an ideal fort for camping. There is plenty to be explored on the fort which cannot be done in a one day trek, hence halting overnight and then exploring the fort the next morning is always recommended. There are 2 temples [Padmavati and a smaller temple] which you can use for camping during night if you do not have tents. Security is not a major concern as both the temples have working doors. But, if you have females in your group, I would recommend that you take at-least 7-10 males in your group. You can also carry your own tents for camping. There are plenty of nice spots where you can pitch your tents for the night.

Accomodation Capacity: Padmavati Temple : 50 Smaller temple: 6-7

Check this link for places where you can buy good tents in pune.

You don't need to carry Firewood for camping on this fort coz the Villagers sell firewood for Rs.50 and Rs.100 on the fort itself. Rs.100 Firewood should keep you warm the whole night.

What to see on the fort:

  • SANJEEVANI MACHEE
  • PADMAVATEE MACHEE - This machee is one of the important structures on the fort. During the Maratha rule, this machee was used as a stronghold to protect the fort.
  • PADMAVATI TEMPLE - This is the temple of goddess Padmavati. Many trekkers use this as an shelter for overnight treks.
  • RAMESHWARAM TEMPLE - This is another small temple which lies in the frontyard of Padmavati temple. It is a temple of lord Shiva. This again can be used for night stays and can accomodate 5-6 persons.
  • ALU DARWAJA - During old days, this door was used to go to Torna fort. The structure of the door is in ruins now.
  • PALI DARWAJA - This is the main door of Rajgad which is still intact. Even the surrounding structures are still intact. Trekkers who take the Pali route have to enter the fort via this door.
  • SUVELA MACHEE
  • VIEW OF TORNA AND SINHAGAD

One must first arrive at Gunjavane, the base settlement, in order to access the fort. From there, the hike begins and leads you over a lovely track with plenty of lush vegetation, waterfalls, and breathtaking views of the hills surrounding you. It is advised to wear suitable trekking shoes, bring extra water, and pack some snacks for the journey because it entails a high ascent with lots of uneven areas.

As soon as you get to the summit, you can explore the fort and all of its buildings, including the Balekilla, the Darwaja, and the Rajwada Palace. The surrounding hills and valleys can be seen for miles in all directions, and the view from the summit is stunning.

Timing to trek, Rajgad Fort,

Planning a journey for trekking should take timing into account. The timing of a journey is determined by a number of variables, including the weather, the route’s degree of difficulty, and the availability of resources.

Weather: Your experience may be significantly impacted by the weather in the area where you want to trek. For instance, it is advised to travel during the summer months when the weather is pleasant and the snow has melted if you intend to embark on a hike in the Himalayas. The greatest time to embark on a hike through a jungle is during the dry season when the trails are less slick.

Level of difficulty: Another important factor in timing is the trek’s degree of difficulty. It is preferable to start with easier treks for beginners and progress to more difficult ones over time. It’s a good idea to select a journey that fits your level of physical fitness and capabilities.

Resources: Your trekking experience may be impacted by the availability of resources including food, water, and lodging. Research and preparation are crucial, especially if you intend to travel in isolated areas. It is best to check ahead of time because some treks may only be available during specific seasons.

The perfect trekking organisation, I had been with them from Rajgad to Torna trek last weekend. The complete trek was very well organised, both the trek leads were calm and composed when we had certain last minutes challenges. They are also completely aware of proper food and water points which matters precisely for long-distance treks in Sahaydri. One request I would like to make is, to get the latest update of the trekking route through their network before the trek, to avoid last minutes hiccups!

  • Over time we have found this number to be optimum when it comes to ensuring personalised attention to every member of our group.
  • On mountaineering expeditions this number is even smaller. Our group sizes are capped at 12 members ensuring a Participants : HAP Ratio of 2:1.

Best Expedition Leaders

  • Our Expedition leaders are advanced mountaineering course qualified, specially trained in rescue procedures from NIM and certified first-aid responders.

Star Trek: The Exhibit In San Jose

Those Star Trek fans living in the Bay area will be pleased to hear that Star Trek: The Exhibition will arrive there this fall.

On October 23, Star Trek: The Exhibition will open at the Tech Museum in San Jose, California, and run through at least Christmas. The run “could go beyond that if things go well,” said Elizabeth Williams , senior director of marketing at The Tech.

Star Trek: The Exhibition will take up more than fifteen thousand square feet, and will be larger than those seen in other cities, such as Detroit. “Once again, we’ve successfully endeavored to bring our visitors an exhibition that everyone on the planet, and even strange new worlds, can relate to, learn from and enjoy,” said Tech President Peter Freiss . “Housing the exhibition at the Tech Museum is perfectly logical.”

The exhibit will include: an authentic replica of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (original series,) actual shooting model of a Borg cube, full-motion flight simulator, costumes and props, such as a tricorder, phaser and communicator, from all five Star Trek television shows as well as from the eleven movies, including Star Trek XI.

“Many of the comments they got in Detroit about the show were about why the new film wasn’t part of the exhibit and why it wasn’t part of the historical timeline in the exhibit,” said Elizabeth Williams, explaining that the exhibit has been updated and will include Star Trek XI .

Geologic map of the Palo Alto and part of the Redwood Point 7-1/2' quadrangles, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, California

The Palo Alto and southern part of the Redwood Point 7-1/2' quadrangles cover an area on the San Francisco peninsula between San Francisco Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains. San Francisquito and Los Trancos Creeks, in the southeastern part of the map area, form the boundary between San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The area covered by the geologic map extends from tidal and marsh lands at the edge of the bay southward across a gently sloping alluvial plain to the foothills of the northern Santa Cruz Mountains. The foothills are separated from the main mass of the mountains by two northwest-striking faults, the San Andreas and Pilarcitos, that cross the southwest corner of the map area (fig. 1). The map and adjoining areas are here divided into three structural blocks juxtaposed along these faults, adopting the scheme of Nilsen and Brabb (1979): (1) the San Francisco Bay block lying east of the San Andreas Fault Zone; (2) the Pilarcitos block lying between the San Andreas and Pilarcitos Faults; and (3) the La Honda block that includes the main mass of the Santa Cruz Mountains lying west of the Pilarcitos Fault. The west boundary of the La Honda block is the Seal Cove-San Gregorio Fault.

Pre-late Pleistocene Cenozoic rocks of the foothills have been compressed into northwest-striking folds, which have been overridden by Mesozoic rocks along southwest-dipping low-angle faults. Coarse- to fine-grained upper Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial and estuarine deposits, eroded from the foothills and composing the alluvial plain, are essentially undeformed. Most of the alluvial plain, including some parts of the marsh land that borders the bay, has been covered by residential and commercial developments, and virtually all of the remaining marsh land has been diked off and used as salt evaporating ponds. The map area includes parts of the municipalities of San Carlos, Redwood City, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, Menlo Park, and East Palo Alto in San Mateo County; and Palo Alto, Stanford University, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills in Santa Clara County (fig. 2). Much of the university land remains as undeveloped open space surrounded by densely urbanized lands.

Geologic maps of all or part of the present map area have been prepared previously by Branner and others (1909), Thomas (1949), Dobbs and Forbes (1960), Dibblee (1966), Page and Tabor (1967), Pampeyan (1970a, 1970b), Beaulieu (1970), Helley and others (1979), and by numerous Stanford University students working on topical earth science problems. In addition, numerous engineering geologic studies have been conducted for site investigations relating to residential and commercial developments and, in particular, for construction of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The reports pertaining to SLAC are summarized in Skjei and others (1965) and more recently in a report by Earth Sciences Associates (1983). The interested reader is referred to Brabb and Pampeyan (1983), Brabb and others (1982), Wentworth and others (1985), Wieczorek and others (1985), Thomson and Evernden (1986), Brabb and Olson (1986), Youd and Perkins (1987), Perkins (1987), and Mark and Newman (1988) for information pertaining to geology, history, slope stability, seismic shaking, liquifaction potential, and faulting and seismicity in San Mateo County, some of which can be applied directly to northern Santa Clara County.

Field work for the present geologic map was done in 1962-1964 and 1966 when SLAC and Interstate 280 were in early stages of construction. Only minor additions and revisions have been made since this mapping was first released (Pampeyan, 1970a; 1970b) as it was impractical to keep pace with accelerating urban development of the area. Geologic units of the flatlands area are largely adapted from Helley and Lajoie (1979).
