Taking a boat ride in NYC is one of the best ways to see a different perspective of the Big Apple. While there are lots of different tours in New York City , a cruise can be a more relaxing way to go sightseeing.

Not only that but there are all kinds of New York City boat tours that you can do, from leisurely harbor rides and buffet cruises to exciting speedboat and sailing adventures. All of these tours go past some of the Big Apple’s most popular attractions, like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, there are unique aspects to each boat ride, so I’ll tell you what to expect from each one.

In a nutshell, these are the 7 best boat tours in NYC:

  • Statue of Liberty Boat Tour
  • Champagne Sunset Yacht Cruise
  • NYC Buffet Dinner Cruise
  • The Beast Speedboat Ride
  • Architecture Yacht Cruise
  • 90-Minute Landmarks Cruise
  • Harbor Lights Night Cruise

Also, before we begin, I’ll tell you that several of these tours are included in the New York Pass and the New York Sightseeing Pass , so consider reading our guide to the best NY city passes .

1. Statue of Liberty cruise, a fun New York City boat tour

First, this one-hour cruise is a quick and affordable NYC boat ride that I recommend if you’re short on time but want to enjoy some sightseeing.

During the tour, which is led by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll sail around New York Harbor, past some of the top attractions that make the Big Apple so iconic. The highlight of this NYC sightseeing cruise is the Statue of Liberty , which you’ll see up-close from the water. Your boat will get within 100 feet of Lady Liberty, so you’ll be able to see the full splendor of her 305-ft frame.

Statue of Liberty, new york city cruise tours

Not only is this one of the best Statue of Liberty tours for people on a budget, but it also takes you past other top landmarks along the way. For example, you’ll sail past Ellis Island , Governor’s Island , and the South Street Seaport .

As you make your way along the Hudson River, your guide will point out important skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan, like the Empire State Building and the Freedom Tower . Then, sail under the Brooklyn Bridge , the most famous bridge in NYC , and make your way up the East River to see Manhattan from the other side.

You can take this tour year-round since there is indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a cash bar on board. Also, if you have the New York Pass , this NY boat tour is included.

  • Price : $30+
  • Duration : 1 hour
  • Highlights : Sightseeing cruise around the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and past both sides of Lower Manhattan

2. Champagne sunset yacht cruise, a romantic boat tour in New York City

For a fun girl’s night or a romantic date with your partner, consider this champagne cruise . The two-hour sightseeing tour takes you through New York Harbor on the Schooner America 2.0, an 1800s-style sailboat. You’ll depart from Chelsea Piers just before sunset, so you can enjoy the warm breeze as you peacefully glide down the Hudson River.

The vessel is operated by a professional sailing captain and crew, who will expertly navigate the schooner through the harbor. If it’s a chilly evening, the crew will hand out blankets to keep you warm while you enjoy the views of the NY skyline at golden hour.

Schooner America 2.0, sunset cruise in nyc

Capture photos of the setting sun behind the Statue of Liberty , sail past Ellis Island and circle around Battery Park to see the other side of Manhattan. If the weather is good, your captain may take you past Governor’s Island and Manhattan’s Financial District , too.

Moreover, your ticket includes one complimentary cocktail, and you can purchase additional drinks throughout the tour. With the flowing drinks and sunset views, this scenic cruise along the harbor is one of the best things to do in NYC as a couple . Plus, the tour is included in the New York Sightseeing Pass .

  • Price : $86
  • Duration : 2 hours
  • Highlights : Sunset cruise on an 1800s-style sailboat, champagne service, views of Ellis Island, Liberty Island, The Battery, and other landmarks

3. NYC buffet dinner cruise, the best NYC boat tour for couples

Another fun NYC boat tour that you can do as a couple is this brunch, lunch, or dinner cruise through New York Harbor. Spend a couple of hours cruising on the water while enjoying a gourmet chef-prepared meal, live entertainment, and views of the city’s most famous attractions.

You’ll climb aboard the Bateaux New York, a luxurious European-inspired vessel with indoor seating and open-air decks. This glass-enclosed boat is perfect for an NYC sightseeing cruise , as you can stay inside without missing any of the beautiful views and landmarks.

Depart from Chelsea Piers and cruise down the Hudson River, past Midtown and Lower Manhattan’s west side. The tour includes live narration, so you can learn more about the city skyline and its most iconic buildings. You’ll see the Statue of Liberty , One World Trade Center , the Brooklyn Bridge , and more.

NYC buffet cruise, new york city boat tours

This romantic NYC cruise has a brunch, lunch, and dinner option, so it’s up to you when to take the tour. Brunch includes bottomless mimosas and items like cinnamon French toast and seasonal fruit, or you can enjoy spinach salad, roasted salmon Provençale, and butter cake on the lunch tour.

That said, I think this cruise is one of the best things to do in NYC at night , as the dinner menu includes things like lobster bisque, tuna tartare, hand-carved strip loin, and New York-style cheesecake. You’ll also get to listen to live entertainment by a jazz pianist while seeing the Manhattan skyline after dark.

  • Price : $105+
  • Duration : 2-3 hours
  • Highlights : Sightseeing cruise through New York Harbor with live entertainment and a gourmet 3-course meal

4. The Beast speedboat ride, an exciting boat tour in New York City

For a change of pace, check out this speedboat tour , an epic boat ride that’s both thrilling and educational.

Take a seat on the deck and hold onto the handrails, because you’re in for an incredible adventure. The Beast is a 70-foot sightseeing speedboat that will take you past the highlights of the NYC skyline at speeds up to 45 mph. Your tour is accompanied by a heart-pumping soundtrack and a professional and charismatic guide who will point out all the beautiful sights.

The Beast, new york city speed boat

Feel the wind in your hair and the spray of water on your face as you speed past Lower Manhattan, catching views of the Empire State Building , One World Trade Center , and Battery Park . Then, jet over to the Statue of Liberty , where your captain will cut the engine so you can take a breath and marvel at Lady Liberty. Afterward, it’s time to get back to the action and continue zipping through the harbor.

You won’t find a New York harbor boat tour quite like this, and it’s one of the best things to do in Manhattan with family or friends.

  • Duration : 30 minutes
  • Highlights : Speedboat tour through New York Harbor, photo ops of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty

5. Architecture yacht cruise around Manhattan, an interesting NYC boat cruise

This yacht cruise is the perfect mix of sightseeing and education, so if you’re looking for an enlightening activity to do for a few hours, I recommend it.

You’ll hop aboard a beautiful 1920s-style yacht with a guide from the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter. They’ll share interesting facts, history, info, and tidbits of trivia about the Manhattan skyline, including how it has changed over the decades and the different architectural styles you can see.

As you sail along the waterfront, you’ll learn about the city’s development and how it grew into one of the most famous urban centers in the world. Your guide will shed new light on the Woolworth Building , monuments like the 9/11 Memorial , Wall Street’s Art Deco buildings, and the “starchitecture” of downtown NYC.

Brooklyn Bridge, new york city boat cruise

Witness Frank Gehry’s contribution to the New York skyline by viewing the Beekman Tower and the IAC Building from the boat, and check out the Tower Verre in Midtown, which was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

As this NYC yacht cruise circumnavigates Manhattan Island, you’ll sail under all 18 bridges, comparing and contrasting the architectural structure and style of each. While you enjoy some spectacular sightseeing, you’ll learn more about some of Manhattan’s most iconic condos, the public housing renewal project along the East River, and postwar revitalization efforts to improve the city’s buildings.

  • Price : $106+
  • Duration : 2 hours, 45 minutes
  • Highlights : Sightseeing cruise led by a knowledgeable guide who will share insights about the city’s most famous architectural marvels

6. 90-minute landmarks cruise, the best sightseeing boat ride in New York City

This 90-minute New York City river cruise is another affordable option if you want to see several popular landmarks in one tour. During this boat ride, you’ll travel down the Hudson River and get stunning views of Midtown and Lower Manhattan’s west side. While you sail along, your tour guide will tell you interesting stories and trivia about the Big Apple and some of its top attractions.

New York Harbor, new york water taxis

Enjoy a sightseeing tour from the water, and get awesome views of the Empire State Building , the Freedom Tower , Manhattan’s waterfront parks, and Ellis Island . Your boat will also approach Liberty Island, allowing you to get up-close views of the Statue of Liberty . As you make your way back to the pier, you’ll go under the Brooklyn and Williamsburg Bridges, two historical landmarks in Brooklyn .

So, if you’re looking for a boat tour that gives you a good overview of Manhattan’s top sights, this Hudson River sightseeing cruise is a great choice, and it’s included in the New York Pass .

  • Price : $37+
  • Duration : 1.5 hours
  • Highlights : Boat tour past Midtown and Lower Manhattan attractions, including Liberty and Ellis Islands

7. Harbor Lights night cruise, the best evening boat ride in New York City

Finally, this evening cruise is a beautiful night tour through New York Harbor, and a great way to see the Manhattan skyline lit up after dark. Take a serene boat ride with climate-controlled indoor seating and an outdoor deck. The tour includes live commentary from an expert guide and some of the most unique perspectives of NYC’s most famous attractions.

You’ll set sail on this New York City night cruise right before sunset, so you’ll get the advantage of seeing the lovely views at golden hour and after dark. Cruise under the Manhattan Bridge and sail past the Freedom Tower , the Empire State Building , Titanic Pier , and Battery Park . Then, head over to Liberty and Ellis Islands , where you’ll get a closer look at the Ellis Island Immigration Station and the Statue of Liberty .

Brooklyn Bridge, new york city night cruise

As you make your way back to Manhattan, you’ll pass Governor’s Island , the South Street Seaport , and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum . As you pass under the Brooklyn and Williamsburg Bridges, keep an eye out for the Chrysler Building and the United Nations Building .

There is a fully stocked bar on the boat, so enjoy sipping on a cocktail while witnessing the magnificent views. As you can imagine, this tour would be a fun thing to do in New York City with your friends or partner, and it’s also included in the New York Pass .

  • Price : $41+
  • Highlights : Twilight cruise around Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island

Your guide to New York City

Do you dream of Christmas or summer in New York? Well, you're far from alone-these are the peak periods for tourism here. If you're happy to brave the competition for affordable accommodations, these times of year are wonderful. But spring and fall are no less special, and come with the bonus of shorter lines at popular attractions. In our view, any time is a great time for a bite of the Big Apple, so why not pick one of the cheaper months?

New York City is a place to look your coolest, so bring your most interesting (though not necessarily your fanciest) outfits. There are some other items it pays to pack, too:

  • A camera: Does this go without saying? It should. New York has one of the most striking cityscapes there is, and most phone cameras can't capture that.
  • A backpack: It's by far the safest and most practical way of toting all your bits and pieces around the city. Use it to carry your...
  • Layers: Outside of summer, you'll want a sweater or a light jacket on hand, at a bare minimum. And the depths of winter require a coat, hat and scarf.

There are very good reasons why the New York City subway is so well loved. It really is easy to use, plus it runs all night. Get yourself a MetroCard as soon as you arrive and getting from A to B will be a breeze. Your MetroCard will also cover bus travel, which will likely come in handy a few times during your visit. And of course, when you're in a hurry, you can always hail one of those unmistakable yellow cabs or use a ridesharing app.

New York Dinner Cruise

1.  New York Dinner Cruise

Patrons flock to Hornblower’s climate-controlled sun deck for the decadent three-course meal and artisan cocktails. With entrée options like honey sesame chicken, oven-roasted flounder and braised beef short ribs, we can’t blame them. It’s hard to not want to get up and dance as you cruise past iconic New York City landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge to complimentary live jazz.

Where is it? 111, 11th Avenue, New York.    Budget range? A pricy one, but well spent for an evening cruise through New York's harbour accompanied by some keys.   Time Out Tip: There aren't many seats on the top deck, so it's worth getting there a little earlier to skip the queue.

Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in africa, travel writer says.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant, and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them — and it was right to do so.

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through.

I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

Norwegian CRUISELINE

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK, yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred meters from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalized, and the other passengers were already boarding.

There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport — hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count.

I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: We spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals and the other on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it.

I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158 or so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry, guys, my bad, lol.”

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.
  • COLUMN: Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in Africa

Check out The Post’s tips on what to do if you’re left stranded like the Norwegian Cruise passengers

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3,372 people — 2,340 passengers and 1,032 crew — and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning.

It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind?

Generally there are two options: Either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you — your passport, phone, credit card and medication — because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship.

It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their vacation.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours — those which have been organized by the cruise ship operator — to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands.

Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to return.

Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a bathroom. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe , Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3,364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

News | Baltimore-bound cruise passengers arrive in Norfolk

The Carnival Legend docked at the Half Moone Cruise Center in Norfolk early Sunday morning, March 31,2024. At 6:30AM passengers began to leave the ship and board waiting buses for a trip back to Baltimore. Bill Tiernan/ For The Virginian-Pilot

NORFOLK — It is safe to say that most of the Carnival Legend cruise passengers did not think their vacation would end this way.

The sun had not yet risen as the cruise ship — which departed Baltimore’s port several days ago — docked at 4 a.m. Sunday at the Half Moon Cruise and Celebration Center. Downtown was quiet, many still asleep or attending a sunrise Easter service, as an impressive fleet of charter buses circled the cruise center. By 6:45 a.m., the ship’s passengers were working on their next phase of travel. For many, that meant a four-hour bus ride back to Baltimore.

Ships typically return to the port from which they leave, but when disaster struck midway through the cruise, staff had to work fast to find a port available to receive vacationers. The solution: Norfolk.

During the trip, officials closed the Port of Baltimore to all incoming and outgoing ship traffic after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when it was struck by a container ship. The bridge carrying Interstate 695 collapsed in moments, sending several vehicles into the Patapsco River.

Last week, Carnival Cruise Line announced the ship will operate out of Norfolk, and Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas will do the same. Each ship can carry more than 2,000 people.

Lines of sun-kissed cruise-goers towing suitcases began to form as the sun crested over the horizon, many donning Carnival-themed attire and fresh sunburns.

The weather Sunday morning in the Mermaid City was likely much different than conditions they were enjoying in the Bahamas just days ago. Cab drivers parked alongside buses, waiting on customers, and some spoke to each other about how Sunday was likely to be a money-maker as cruise passengers opted to rent cars or fly back to Baltimore instead of braving the bus ride.

Sandy Crow, of Manassas, and her sister Kathy Grant, stood outside Nauticus, waiting for Crow’s husband to pick them up. Crow said she heard about the bridge collapse from another passenger.

“What a tragedy,” she said.

Crow said she has been to Norfolk before, highlighting the Norfolk Mac and Cheese Festival, and the two had been celebrating a sisters’ trip together over the past week. After finding out about their future arrival in Norfolk, Crow said driving home was the preferred option.

“The captain and the whole crew was so good communicating with us. Within a day, we knew we where were going to be. It was all handled beautifully,” Crow said. “It’s about three hours (to Manassas). It’s better than taking a bus for four or five hours, and then it would be another two hours. My husband just said, ‘I’ll just drive down there.'”

As cruise ships reroute to Nauticus, the Port of Virginia is ready to receive diverted cargo traffic from the Port of Baltimore. The collapsed bridge blocks the only channel in and out of the port on the Patapsco River.  The port will be unable to receive shipping traffic until the channel is cleared , and stands to lose an estimated $15 million per day in economic activity.

Some passengers who spoke to The Virginian-Pilot said they heard the news of the tragedy from the captain, and the crew handled it the best they could. Despite the tragedy, many said the trip was still a good one although it is ending differently than they had originally planned.

For other passengers, the trip does not even end in Baltimore. Jackie Plum and her family took their Spring Break trip out of Baltimore, but they are actually from Michigan.

“When they announced that the the bridge collapsed, I think the cruise ship handled it really well. They made it as stress free as possible,” she said. “We kind of changed our plans at the last minute because so (the reroute) is adding, like, an extra four hours to our drive. Now, we have to go four hours back to Baltimore and then eight hours to Michigan. We were trying to get off the ship as fast as we can, and at the last minute, we decided to rent a car at the airport.”

For the foreseeable future, Norfolk will be welcoming more passengers, including a Royal Caribbean cruise later this week on April 4.

“You know what? Stuff happens,” Crow said. “The only thing I’m upset about is people lost their lives.”

Election 2024 | trump’s campaign is expecting to raise a record $43 million at a high-dollar florida fundraiser.

boat cruise nyc tonight

By MICHELLE L. PRICE (Associated Press)

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s campaign is expecting to raise more than $40 million on Saturday when major donors gather for his biggest fundraiser yet.

The event at the Palm Beach, Florida, home of billionaire investor John Paulson is expected to bring in $43 million for the former president’s third run at the White House, according to Paulson.

The high-dollar event is expected to include about 100 guests, including more than a few billionaires, and top a new single-event fundraising record set by President Joe Biden, who raised $26 million recently at a gathering with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

“The response to our fundraising efforts has been overwhelming, and we’ve raised over $43 million so far,” Paulson, a hedge fund manager, said in a statement. “There is massive support amongst a broad spectrum of donors.”

The event, billed as the “Inaugural Leadership Dinner,” sends a signal of a resurgence of Trump and the Republican Party’s fundraising, which has struggled to catch up to Biden and the Democrats.

Trump and the GOP announced earlier in the week that they raised more than $65.6 million in March and closed out the month with $93.1 million. Biden and the Democrats announced Saturday that they took in more than $90 million last month and had $192 million-plus on hand.

“While Donald Trump has been busy awarding himself golf trophies at Mar-a-Lago and palling around with billionaires, Joe Biden has been crisscrossing the nation connecting with voters and outlining his vision to grow our economy from the bottom up and the middle out,” Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement, referring to Trump’s Florida residence.

Trump initially struggled to attract big donors in particular when he launched his campaign and some lined up to support the other Republicans who challenged him in the presidential primary. But as Trump racked up easy wins, leveled the field and became the party’s presumptive nominee, the GOP has solidified behind him.

Contributions to the event will go toward the Trump 47 Committee, according to the invitation, a joint fundraising agreement with the Republican National Committee, state Republican parties and Save America, a political action committee that pays the bulk of Trump’s legal bills. In an unusual arrangement, the fundraising agreement directs donations to first pay the maximum allowed under law to his campaign and Save America before the RNC or state parties get a cut.

Donors who give the suggested $814,600 per person or $250,000 per person will only have $5,000 of their donation go to Save America, sending hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cash-strapped RNC.

As Trump prepared in March to install a new handpicked leadership team at the RNC, including his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, some members of the RNC worried that the committee’s money would go toward Trump’s sizable legal fees as he fights a number of court cases, including four criminal cases.

The fundraising arrangement doesn’t direct RNC funds to Trump’s legal bills. But when checks of any amount are written to the combined campaign, the campaign and Save America get paid first by default.

Co-chairs of the fundraiser include Robert Bigelow, a Las Vegas-based businessman who had supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign; New York grocery billionaire John Catsimatidis; Linda McMahon, the former World Wrestling Entertainment executive and head of the Small Business Administration while Trump was president; casino mogul Steve Wynn; and former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler, according to the invitation.

Guests are asked to contribute $814,600 per person as a “chairman” contributor, which comes with seating at Trump’s table, or $250,000 per person as a “host committee” contributor. Both options come with a photo opportunity and a personalized copy of Trump’s coffee table book featuring photographs from his administration, ”Our Journey Together.”

Three of Trump’s former rivals for the GOP nomination — South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy — are expected to appear as “special guests.”

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.

Vacation horror as son, 20, jumps overboard from Royal Caribbean cruise in front of family

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

The 18-story ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.

According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leaped over the side.

Some passengers said it appeared to be an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decision.

“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims tells The Post. ” It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continues. “As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.”

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger,  Deborah Morrison, told The Post. “His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

“It was insane,” says Sims. “It was just surreal.”

In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads. “Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

News of the apparent suicide attempt quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.

“The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Fouse continued. “They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

The incidents, whether accidental or intentional, are often deadly.

In the past few years, most cruise lines have enacted onboard safety measures and surveillance systems to help reduce the risk of overboard deaths.

The Coast Guard confirmed to The Post it is still conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters off Cuba. The man has not yet been found.
