A massive heart attack has Randal deciding to make a movie about his life working at the Quick Stop convenience store, as fans got a sneak peek when the official trailer for Kevin Smith ‘s Clerks 3 dropped Wednesday.
As Lionsgate and Fathom Events get set to bring the sequel to theaters for two nights only, on Sept. 13 and 15, the trailer sees Randal, played by Jeff Anderson, tap fellow clerks Dante, Elias, Jay and Silent Bob, played by Smith, to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all.
In February 2018, Smith tweeted a selfie from a hospital bed after telling his fans t hat he had survived a “massive” heart attack. The Clerks director added: “If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground!”

So it’s no surprise Randal in Clerks 3 also has a near-fatal heart attack, which inspired the sequel script Smith wrote and directed. “Everything in this script is something either me or someone I know said,” Randal says at one point, just before Fred Armisen , Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ben Affleck make brief cameos in the trailer.
Fathom Events and Lionsgate will present Clerks III in more than 700 U.S. movie theaters in September, with both nights to feature an exclusive look behind the scenes with director Smith and the cast of the film.
Clerks III will also star Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Trevor Fehrman as Elias, and Jason Mewes as Jay. Smith’s breakout film, Clerks, was released in 1994. The sequel, Clerks 2 , arrived in theaters in 2006 and grossed $24 million in the U.S.
Finding the financing for Clerks 3 took years, and for the first time the latest sequel was shot entirely on location in New Jersey.
“ Clerks III is the definition of event cinema, especially if you are a Kevin Smith fan or a maven of independent cinema. This film rounds out the story that started a revolution in filmmaking. And to bring it to the fans on the big screen, there is no greater partner in the world of event cinema than Fathom Events,” Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s executive vp acquisitions and co-productions, said in a statement.
Clerks III has Liz Destro and Smodco’s Jordan Monsanto producing.

Kevin Smith: how we made Clerks
‘We shot it after hours in the store where I worked, filming from 11pm to 6am with the shutters closed. Everyone assumed we were making a porno’
Kevin Smith, director
I worked in six convenience stores in New Jersey from 1989 to 1993, which is where Clerks came from. It was an appealing, easy job, like being a bartender: it puts you nominally in charge and people have to socialise with you.
Seeing Richard Linklater’s Slacker on my 21st birthday showed me that movies didn’t have to blow up the Death Star – they could just be a snapshot of where you were in life. Clerks came out of a demand for representation: there was a time when that world of dead-end jobs didn’t exist in the movies, when pop culture wasn’t the culture, when you didn’t see people who talked in movie quotes.
The main character – Dante, the slacker who is trapped but thinks he’s meant for something else – was based on me. Randal was Bryan Johnson, my friend who worked with me at Quick Stop Groceries and RST Video, where we shot the film. He didn’t give a fuck about what anyone thought. He would fight with people, make fun of them to their face. He was the guy I secretly wished to be. I was going to play Randal, then I realised I couldn’t memorise dialogue. So I took the role that had none – Silent Bob – and Brian O’Halloran played Dante.
The film was mostly funded on credit cards. Before Clerks was a gleam in my eye, Bryan and I had started a contest to see who could get the most cards. I was ahead – 12 to his five – but I never did anything with them because my Irish Catholic family thought they were the devil’s work. They sat in a box in my underwear drawer, but I remembered them when we started Clerks.
I wrote that Dante can’t open the shutters at the start of the film so we could shoot the whole thing at night. We filmed for 21 nights straight. I closed the store at 10.30pm, we would start shooting by 11 and continue until 6am. Everyone assumed I was making a porno. At 6, the store would open, and I’d go back to work until 11am. When the next shift came in, I would go up to New York to drop off the footage, or home to sleep, because I had to go back to work at 3pm. But I was never tired – I could’ve done it for another 21 days.
When we screened it at the American Film Market, hardly anyone was there, and I watched my $27,575 playing up on the screen. That first 15 minutes was the only time I was worried, sad, broken, thinking: “What have I done?” Then I relaxed and thought: “You saw Slacker here in this same movie theatre. In a little over two years, you’ve gone from watching someone else’s movie to watching your own.”
Luckily, one of the few people in the room not connected to the film was Bob Hawk , who worked with the selection committee at Sundance. He only went to see it because it had a crappy picture in the catalogue and he felt sorry for us. But he thought it was fantastic, and recommended we submit it to Sundance in 1994, where it was a breakout hit and Miramax bought it for $227,000. I can’t believe it has lasted for 25 years. A lot of YouTube creators , the next generation, have said to me: “It’s because I saw Clerks that I realised I could do that.” It’s the movie that launched a thousand ships.
Brian O’Halloran, actor
I auditioned with an extract from Wait Until Dark , an old Alan Arkin film. I was absolutely dreadful, but good enough to get a callback. A few days later, Kevin and I read the scene where Dante and Randal discuss the Death Star and the independent contractors who built it. I still thought I was reading for a bit part, that maybe this was a scene where the main characters walk into a convenience store. Then he told me they were the lead characters and offered me the role of Dante. I was psyched.
Kevin thought that, being a stage actor, I would be able to handle the dialogue. The first scene I shot was the one with Dante’s ex-girlfriend, discussing her marriage. It was a seven-minute take, with no cutaways.
The sexually explicit dialogue definitely pushed the envelope. Jeff Anderson, who played Randall, had some objections to the long list of porno titles he had to read off. He said: “I don’t want to do it, my mom’s going to see this film.” So Kevin added four more titles and said: “Read it. I don’t want to hear you moaning.”
We shot a lot of pages every night. While Kevin was putting the equipment away in the morning, we had the till slightly open so I could give change if people came in wanting cigarettes or a paper. I’d bring in the paper and the bread deliveries, then drive to my job at a barware factory.
I was not a fan of the original ending , in which Dante is shot dead when the store is held up. Luckily, the producers told Kevin to keep it a straight comedy. A lot of convenience stores are automated now, but the film is still relevant – even if you haven’t worked a shitty customer service job, you’ve been in an establishment with shitty service, or with staff who are overeducated and underemployed.
Kevin Smith’s podcast Hollywood Babble-On tours the UK 11-15 May. Brian O’Halloran is at MCM Comic Con, London , 24-26 May.

Kevin Smith: ‘I got a phone call from Harvey Weinstein a week before the #MeToo thing broke’
As kevin smith returns in ‘jay and silent bob reboot’, the actor, director and podcaster tells gerard gilbert about the changes in his life post-heart attack, a third clerks film, and why he doesn’t believe ‘woke culture’ is killing comedy, article bookmarked.

K evin Smith doesn’t like to dash expectations. As expected, when we meet in a deluxe London hotel that would be completely alien to his stoner character, Silent Bob – from Smith’s 1994 classic slacker movie Clerks – he’s wearing his trademark back-to-front white baseball cap.
“It is a kind of branding,” the 49-year-old actor-director-podcaster says. “It just saves a lot of time. I tend to go with the hat… a wash ’n’ go kind of guy.”
For the record, he’s also wearing an oversized purple jacket, a T-shirt promoting his new film Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (more of which later), denim shorts (this is in deepest November) and yellow Vans. “For years I wore hockey jerseys but they went away after I lost a load of weight.”
The weight loss was the indirect result of a massive heart attack in February 2018 while filming a comedy special. Smith thought that he couldn’t catch his breath because he’d smoked too much weed that day, but luckily his manager made the decision to call an ambulance. “They’re just going to tell me I’m too stoned,” he said.
Informed instead he had an 80 per cent chance of dying, Smith remained remarkably calm. “I always figured you’d have to drag me out of this world, but I went through my entire life and realised I was really content.”
And that wasn’t just the marijuana speaking. A huge source of Smith’s near-death contentment was his decision 25 years ago to max out his credit cards to finance a black-and-white movie filmed and set in the local convenience store where he worked in New Jersey. Made for just $27,575, Clerks starred his friends Brian O’Halloran, as the main protagonist Dante Hicks, and Jason Mewes, as the talkative half of Jay and Silent Bob. Mixing witty filth with stoner wisdom, Clerks was made with the amateurish vim of Andy Warhol’s Factory movies, and had shades, too, of Richard Linklater’s Slacker . It won a prize at Sundance before being snapped up by Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax, going on to gross over $3m.
The 40 best films of the decade
Weinstein and Miramax would go on to produce nearly all of Smith’s films for the next 14 years, including Chasing Amy , Dogma (Smith’s suitably controversial 1999 fantasy starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as fallen angels and Alanis Morissette as God), Jersey Girl and Clerks II . He says that if he knew then about Harvey Weinstein ’s abuse, he would happily have foregone them all.
“Scott Rosenberg [the Hollywood screenwriter] wrote an article that said everybody knew [about Weinstein], but I didn’t know because if I had I wouldn’t have worked with the guy,” he says. “Around Miramax all we thought was like ‘Oh, Harvey cheats on his wife’ because he’d always be around pretty girls but it was never like ‘Harvey is a rapist’.
“I got a phone call from Harvey a week before the #MeToo thing broke. He hadn’t spoken to me for 10 years and I was so excited because this was the guy who started my career. He owns Dogma personally and he was like, ‘Maybe we could talk about a sequel to Dogma … we’ll speak soon.’ A week later the New York Times piece ran. It was a sick feeling. He was circling his wagons because he knew that article was about to drop.

“But I’m not the victim here,” Smith continues. “He never victimised me; in fact, he made my dreams come true.” To help the real victims, the actresses whose dreams Weinstein crushed, Smith pledged his future residuals from the films Weinstein produced to the non-profit organisation Women in Film.
His new film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot , sees the stoners from Clerks make a road trip to Hollywood to fight for the film rights of their fictional likenesses Bluntman and Chronic, just like they did in 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back .
“Technically it’s not really a reboot, it’s more a ‘requel’ – a reboot and a sequel together, like The Force Awakens ,” says Smith, a massive Star Wars fan. “I want to say some stuff about reboots and remakes and sequels.”
If that sounds a bit meta and a million miles from the lo-fi grubby realism of Clerks , then it is. It’s one primarily for the fans, and there are enough of those that, in America, Smith was able to forego a marketing budget and advertise the $8m film on social media alone. He’s an early adopter. “By the time Twitter came around I could do this in my sleep,” he says. “I sold out my American tour just using Twitter and Instagram.”
Jay and Silent Bob Reboot features a small galaxy of guest stars, including Chris Hemsworth (“I didn’t know him but I saw him say he was listening to a Kevin Smith podcast, and I thought, ‘Thor knows my name!’”), Rosario Dawson, Val Kilmer and Ben Affleck . “I cast the movie with my heart attack,” he says. “Basically, you call up people and say, ‘Hey, do you want to come down to New Orleans and be in a movie? You do remember I almost died last year, right?’”
There’s also a starring role for Smith’s 20-year-old daughter Harley Quinn, who plays the leader of a pack of rebellious vegan girls – typecasting perhaps, since it was Harley who persuaded her father, post-heart attack, to take up the plant-based diet that caused Smith to lose 11 stone (70kg). Nowadays he graces photoshoots in Men’s Health and Muscle & Fitness magazines. Harley is gleeful about his conversion, according to her dad. “Oh, yes, she’s ‘If I can flip this motherf***er what a gift for the vegan movement he is’.”
Smith doesn’t agree with the sentiment that “woke” culture is killing comedy. “If you ever punch down to make laughs, you can’t get away with that anymore,” he says. “I was always punching myself, so I don’t find it difficult to make comedy in a woke culture.
“I get to take my characters, firmly rooted in the Nineties, and introduce them to the Klan, to Russian collusion, to social-justice warriors, to diversity, and see what comes of that. The fish out of water thing. But my kid, who’s of an incredibly sensitive generation, had me second-guessing myself. She said you can’t put the Ku Klux Klan in a movie, they’re a hate organisation. I was like, ‘I know that, that’s why we dump s*** on them.’”
One irony of playing a character called Silent Bob is that Smith himself is anything but, his hands gesticulating wildly as he speaks. You can see why podcasting is his natural métier. Another irony is that he has gone from portraying a drug dealer to being in the real-life legal weed business, with his own brand of pre-rolled legal marijuana, a sample of which appears from his pocket now.
“This one is called ‘snoochie boochie’ [Jay and Silent Bob speak for ‘cool’] that’s got 20 per cent THC and 31 percent CBD – so it’s a joint that’s like a cup of coffee. The other two are more like ‘smoke this and it’ll knock you the f*** out’.”
Talking of knockouts, I wonder what his near-death experience has taught him. “I learnt finally that I’m living on borrowed time,” he says. “My wife [former USA Today journalist Jennifer Schwalbach] is like ‘that’s morbid’ and I say, ‘You’re living on borrowed time too, I’m just acutely aware of it.’”
One project that will now finally be made, after a false start in 2017, is a second sequel to Clerks . “The original version of Clerks III was very middle-aged and obsessed with death. Now that I’ve seen death I don’t want to talk about it anymore,” he says.
“The new version is a lot more hopeful. In the very first scene Randall [the video-store worker played by Jeff Anderson] has a massive heart attack. So, in recovery he’s telling Dante, ‘I nearly died last night. I’m 50 years old and I’ve got nothing to show for my life. I’m not watching anyone’s movies anymore, I’m making my own movie about my life working here and you’re going to help me.’ So, Randall and Dante make Clerks , essentially.”
It’s a neat idea, drawing a full circle on Smith’s career and I hope Clerks III does justice to the original. By his own admission, he hasn’t developed as a director in the intervening 25 years. “I don’t think I’m born to be a director, like Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez or Chris Nolan ,” he says. “I’m more of a carpetbagger… I’m a fan. I never wanted to make big stuff. I love watching Marvel movies but I’ve got no interest in making a Marvel movie.
“I’m in the Kevin Smith business. Sometimes I do it through a movie, sometimes I do it through a podcast, sometimes I do it on stage. What makes it all palatable is I give away my podcasts, which is where I do my best work, for free. But every other way, Kevin Smith is trying to separate you from your loot.”

Maisie Smith said: "Dancing in Strictly has been a huge part of my life, and been so much fun. I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to continue that journey in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. Not only do I get to make my musical theatre debut with my former partner in crime, Kevin Clifton , but I get to work with Craig Revel Horwood and Jason Gilkison again too - I can't wait."
Kevin Clifton said: "I'm beyond excited to be performing with Maisie again - she's amazing! And I'll finally be fulfilling my lifelong ambition to play Scott Hastings in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. When I was 10 years old I first watched the movie that would become my favourite film of all time. This is my dream role. I can't wait to don the golden jacket and waltz all over the UK with Maisie in what's set to be an incredible show!"
Craig Revel Horwood said: "I'm delighted that the super talented Maisie Smith is joining Kevin Clifton on the Strictly Ballroom UK tour. I can't wait to see them dance together again. Expect some sexy moves, sizzling costumes and a simply sensational evening! I know that they'll both be FAB-U-LOUS!"
Strictly Ballroom The Musical, co-choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing's Creative Director Jason Gilkison , tells the beguiling story of Scott Hastings, a talented, arrogant and rebellious young ballroom dancer - played by former Strictly Come Dancing professional and 2018 champion, Kevin Clifton . When Scott's radical dance moves see him fall out of favour with the Australian Federation, he finds himself dancing with Fran ( Maisie Smith ), a beginner with no moves at all. Inspired by one another, this unlikely pair gather the courage to defy both convention and their families - and discover that, to be winners, the steps don't need to be strictly ballroom.
Featuring a show-stopping book by Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce , and bringing together a sublime cast of over 20 world class performers, Strictly Ballroom brings to life iconic songs, including Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time with dynamic and joyous verve. This tour will also feature some amazing new songs by internationally acclaimed artists including Sia, David Foster and Eddie Perfect . The show's scintillating singing, dazzling dancing and eye-popping costumes will combine together to bring audiences a story of heart, comedy and drama, and promises to be an unforgettable night under the glitter ball.
This uplifting and courageous musical originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of classmates at Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1984. Eight years later he made his screen directorial debut with 'Strictly Ballroom', the first instalment in Luhrmann's acclaimed Red Curtain Trilogy. The vibrant film enjoyed staggering success, winning three awards at the 1993 BAFTA awards and a 1994 Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture, going on to become one of the most successful Australian films of all time, earning more than $80 million at the box office. In April 2014 Strictly Ballroom The Musical had its world premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
Baz Luhrmann 's Strictly Ballroom the Musical is a fabulous, feel-good evening full of sequins, singing and salsa. This unmissable kaleidoscope of glitz and glamour is a tonic for the soul and will send your heart soaring and toes tapping long after you leave the theatre!

Kevin Clifton and Maisie Smith Strictly Ballroom
Maisie Smith to Star Alongside Kevin Clifton in UK Tour of Strictly Ballroom
Strictly Come Dancing finalist and much loved former EastEnders star, Maisie Smith, will make her musical theatre debut later this year, as she co-stars in the 2022/23 UK tour* of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical in the lead female role of Fran, alongside her former Strictly dance partner, Kevin Clifton, who she waltzed her way to victory with in the Strictly Come Dancing 2019 Children In Need Special.
The musical, based on the award-winning global film phenomenon of the same name, inspired the world to dance and spawned the smash hit TV series Strictly Come Dancing. And now, new for 2022/23, this all-singing, all-dancing and all-glittering show – directed and co-choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood – is set to dazzle audiences once more with this glittering cast. Kicking off in Portsmouth on 26 September, the musical will then waltz around the UK before culminating in Bristol in July 2023.
Maisie first wowed Strictly fans with her dancing in 2019 in the Children In Need TV special with Kevin Clifton. After winning the hearts of the public, the following year she danced her way into the BBC One Strictly Come Dancing final. Earlier this year, Maisie joined the cast of the Strictly Live Arena Tour. During an interview with NME recently , St Vincent shared some details about the follow-up to 2021’s ‘Daddy’s Home’ . “For me, the record is black, white and all the colours in the fire, because it’s about life and death,” she said.
“Life and death is pretty binary – you’re alive or you’re dead. The record’s about what is to be alive and to embrace that agony and ecstasy… On the record, you have to go through hell to get to some semblance of heaven. The record to me is structured that way.”

As for how the musician will showcase the LP on stage at her live gigs, she told NME : “I’m gonna fuck ‘em up. I’m gonna fuck ‘em up.”
Meanwhile, Heartworms released the single ‘May I Comply’ last November. The song followed the band’s 2023 EP ‘ A Comforting Notion’ , which earned a five-star review from NME .
Reviewing the group’s London show late last year , NME wrote: “This is not just a pastiche of what you’d expect from ‘UK GOTHIC POST PUNK’, this is already a fully-rounded world delivered with courage and intent. 2024 will belong to Heartworms.”
