Heritage hotel essence of India with relaxing Goa Tour

Heritage hotel essence of India with relaxing Goa

Both Paylesstoursindia team and our personal driver Prakash went out of their way to make this tour a fantastic and memorable experience. We loved the heritage hotels in all the cities and towns, they all had really special ambience and design style that can be found only in India. This detail made our holidays in India even more pleasent, during hot days it was a pleasure to pop in the hotel for a short rest and a cup of coffee or just to refresh yourself. Driving with Mr. Prakash was really nice, he showed so much respect and attention to details at each step. We highly recommend this travel agency if you still hesitate which one to choose. Many thanks and best wishes.

Heritage Tour to India Tour

Heritage Tour to India

I decided to take a lengthy tour that focused mainly on the historical and cultural aspects of different places in India and I can easily say that this was one of the best trips I’ve taken. All of the locations were beautiful and apart from a slight culture shock at first, I was able to get a feel and understanding of what it’s like in every place. Mumbai’s landmarks, Aurangabad’s many caves and Khajuraho’s temples were awesome. Ganga Aarti Varanasi was a major influence as well as Jaipur, Agra and Delhi. The guides were all very insightful, professional and kind and I learned a lot from each of them. They all provided information about each site in depth and the majority answered all of my questions with relative ease. The drivers were also very competent, courteous and professional and I particularly enjoyed the long drives in between the major cities. The meals included were good as I already enjoy Indian food. Amit, the tour organizer was especially helpful, followed up on all inquiries and the domestic flights arranged made the transfer easy. Overall, I had a wonderful time on this tour and I will always be grateful to everyone who made this experience possible.

What people love about gwalior tours.

Alles war sehr gut organisiert und auf der Route gab es einige beeindruckende Sehenswürdigkeiten/Orte.
Wonderful Sightseeing in the wild. It was a great experience for our first time to India and we felt really comfortable and secure with Siddharth our Tour Guide who was there with us throughout to assist us on each aspect from check-in to hotel until our departures to telling us all the things to carry for safari. All lodges were great and set in serene and peaceful environment with friendly staff. Everything went smooth as per the itinerary and we would surely return to this incredible country again on tour with you. Regards, Cathy

Massive Gwalior Fort, popularly called the Gibraltar of India, overlooks the city. Emperor Babur reputedly described it as "the pearl in the necklace of the forts of Hind." This fort's architecture is unique. It shows Chinese influence on Indian architecture, as Chinese dragons have been crafted at the hilt of the pillars. This influence was because of trade between China and India during that period. After the death of Sher Shah Suri in 1545, who was ruling North India at that time, his son Islam Shah shifted his capital from Delhi to Gwalior and constructed 'Sher Shah Mandir' or Palace/Fort in the memory of his father Sher Shah Suri. Islam Shah operated from Gwalior till his death in 1553.

Gwalior Fort in Madhya Pradesh

Islam Shah had appointed the Hindu warrior 'Hemu' or Hem Chandra Vikramaditya as his Prime Minister in Sher Shah Fort for the first time, who later on became the Vikramaditya king at Delhi and established 'Hindu Raj' in North India, by virtue of winning 22 battles continuously from Punjab to Bengal and defeating Akbar's army in Agra and Delhi on 6 October 1556. He is also known in history as Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya.

According to history, the original fort of Gwalior was founded by the Bargujar Kings during the 34th/35th century of Kali yuga as per puranas available with them. His palace is the most interesting example of early Hindu work of its class in India. Another palace of even greater extent was added to this in 1516. The Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan added palaces to these two, the whole making a group of edifices unequalled for picture sequences and interest by anything of their class in central India. Among the apartments in the palace was the celebrated chamber, named the Baradari, supported on 12 columns, and 45 ft (15 m) square, with a stone roof, forming one of the most beautiful palace-halls in the world. It was, besides, singularly interesting from the expedients to which the Hindu architect was forced to resort to imitate the vaults of the Muslims. Of the buildings, however, which so excited the admiration of the first Mughal emperor Babur, probably little now remains.

The Telika Mandir or 'oil-man's temple', owes its name to Teli, a term for an oil grinder or oil dealer. Many suggestions have been put forward to explain this name historically, but in actual fact the name is not old, the temple being used for processing oil before the British occupied the fort and used the building, albeit temporarily, as a coffee shop. The Telika Mandir is the loftiest temple among all the buildings in Gwalior fort with a height of about 30m. The temple consists of a garbhagriha, that is sanctum proper for the deity, and an antarala to enter into the temple. It can be approached by a flight of steps provided on the eastern side.

Teli-ka-Mandir

The most striking feature of the temple is the wagon-vaulted roof, a form used over rectangular shrines which normally accommodated a row of Mother Goddesses. The goddesses from the interior vanished centuries ago and have not been traced, even in fragments. The exterior walls of the temple are richly decorated with sculptures, many of which are damaged; the niches, shaped like temples, are empty. The building carries a dedicatory inscription to the goddess in a niche on the southern side, but otherwise does not have any history. The architectural style, discussed by a number of architectural historians, points to a date in the late eighth century. The building was thus erected just as the Gurjara Pratihāras were asserting their power over central India. The entrance gateway on the eastern side is a later addition of the British period, made by Major Keith in 1881. It was erected as a way of saving various historic pillars and other pieces no longer in their original context.

Sasbahu Temple, also called the Sas-Bahu Mandir, is an 11th-century twin temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. Near the Gwalior Fort and dedicated to Vishnu in his Padmanabha form, like most Hindu and Jain temples in this region, it is mostly in ruins and was badly damaged from numerous invasions and Hindu-Muslim wars in the region. It was built in 1093 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, according to an inscription found in the larger of the twin temple. The twin temples are situated in the Gwalior Fort

Within the fort are some marvels of medieval architecture. The 15th century Gujari Mahal is a monument to the love of Raja Mansingh Tomar for his intrepid Gujar Queen, Mrignayani. The outer structure of Gujari Mahal has survived in an almost total state of preservation; the interior has been converted into an Archaeological Museum housing rare antiquities, some of them dating back to the 1st century A.D. Even though many of these have been defaced by the iconoclastic Mughals, their perfection of form has survived the ravages of time. Particularly worth seeing is the statue of Shalbhanjika from Gyraspur, the tree goddess, the epitome of perfection in miniature. The statue is kept in the custody of the museum's curator, and can be seen on request.

Gujari Mahal

Built between 1486 and 1517 by Raja Mansingh. The tiles that once adorned its exterior have not survived, but at the entrance , traces of these still remain. Within the palace room’s stand bare, stripped of their former glory, testifying to the passing of the centuries. Vast chambers with fine stone screens were once the music halls, and behind these screens, the royal ladies would learn music from the great masters of the day. Below, circular dungeons housed the state prisoners of the Mughals. Emperor Aurangzeb had his brother , Murad imprisoned , and later executed here. Close by is Jauhar Pond, where in the Rajput tradition, the Ranis committed mass sati after their consorts had been defeated in battle. At Man Mandir Palace, a poignant ambience of those days of chivalry and heroism still lingers in the silent chambers. A superbly mounted Son-et-Lumiere here brings it all alive every evening.

Man Mandir Palace

The sandstone mausoleum of the Afghan prince, Ghaus Mohammed, is also designed on early Mughal lines. Particularly exquisite are the screens which use the pierced stone technique as delicate as lace. It is on the way to Gwalior fort near Hazira from the Railway Station.

Ghaus Mohammed Tomb

Built in the memory of Guru Hargobind Sahib , the 6th Sikh Guru who was imprisoned here by Emperor Jehangir for over two years. It is located on the Gwalior Fort. Distance from Railway Station / Bus Stand: 6.00 Kms Approx.

Gurudwara Data Bandhi Chhod

Situated on the Mountain Area at slopes of Gwalior Fort carries a unique statue of Jain Tirthankars. The largest Idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath on Lotus is the largest statue(in single stone piece) in the world, being 47 feet high and 30 feet in width. 26 Jain statues in a series give a beautiful and attractive picturescue. Built between 1398 to 1536 by Tomar Kings - these Jain Tirthankars Statues are a species of Architecture and a treasure of Old Indian heritage and culture.

A splendor of a different kind exists in the Jai Vilas Palace, current residence of the Scindia family. Some 25 rooms have been turned into the Jivaji Rao Scindia Museum, and in these rooms, so evocative of a regal lifestyle, the past comes alive. Jai Vilas is an Italianate structure which combines the Tuscan and Corinthian architectural modes. Ceilings picked out in gilt, heavy draperies and tapestries, fine Persian carpets and antique furniture from France and Italy are the features of these spacious rooms.

The old ancestral house of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan has recently been converted into 'Sarod Ghar' - Museum of Music by the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Trust under the patronage and guidance of his great son and sarod maestro Ustad Amzad Ali Khan. The museum has been rebuilt keeping in mind the old traditional architecture of Gwalior and houses in it ancient instruments of the great Indian Masters of yesteryears.

One of the nine jewels in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar, Tansen (1500 – 1586), was one of the greatest Indian musicians. For music lovers and those fascinated by history, the tomb remains a place of avid interest. The vocalist, it is said, could create magic with his voice, such that the clouds were tempted to rain down and even the animals were enchanted. Tansen learned Hindustani classical music from Mohammad Ghaus and developed the Gwalior Gharana style of music. He was also a proponent of Dhrupad style of music, which does not seek to entertain but induce the listener with peace and a mood of contemplation. In November every year, the world-famous Tansen Music Festival is organized at the tomb.

Most of the famous attractions in Gwalior are in fact inside the Gwalior Fort premises. Inside the fort are numerous palaces, temples, and other historical structures built by different rulers.

The fort has two entrances. Urwahi Gate is accessible by car and Qila Gate or Gwalior Gate is accessible only by a walk along the ramp.

If you enter the fort through Urwahi Gate, don’t miss the sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras carved into the rock face on the way to the fort. The sculptures, set up within caves (Gopachal and Siddhanchal caves) and alcoves in seated (Padmasana) and standing (Kayotsarga) postures depict all 24 Tirthankaras.

Just at the entrance of the Gwalior Fort Complex is an ancient step-well with 80 pillars, Assi Khamba ki Baori.

The 8th-century Teli-Ka-Mandir dedicated to Vishnu is unique because of its architectural style that marries the elements of north India (Nagara) and south India (Dravidian).

Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor within the fort is a memorial to the sixth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Hargobind Sahib who was imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Jahangir at Gwalior fort.

Chaturbhuj Temple at the Hathi Pol dedicated to Lord Vishnu with the stone inscription comprises the first-ever recorded description of zero in the 7th century and thus is called the Temple of Zero .

As the name says it all, the temple is dedicated to the Sun God and attracts devotees from all over the country.

A tamarind tree near Tansen’s grave is a special one. A saint sitting near the tree told us that if you eat a leaf or two from the tree, your voice becomes as melodious as Tansen’s. That’s another thing you should definitely do while you’re here because you never know 🙂

Samadhi Rani Laxmi Bai

Located in the Phool Bagh complex, the Samadhi of Rani Laxmi Bai is a tribute to the great woman warrior of Jhansi, Rani Laxmi Bai famously known as Jhansi ki Rani who bravely fought with the British in 1857.

Looking at the tall statue of Jhansi ki Rani filled me with pride and I saluted the undaunting spirit and sacrifice of the great queen warrior.

About 23 km from Gwalior, Tighra Dam or Tig Dam on the Sank River is a nice recreation or picnic spot. There are many activities on and off the water like boating, jalpari cruises, river rafting, parasailing, and rock climbing for adventure lovers.

Summers are harsh here. The exploration becomes almost impossible with day temperatures soaring as high as 45 degrees Celsius.

Where to Stay in Gwalior

We stayed at Deo Bagh , a 17th-century heritage property renovated to perfection by the Neemrana Group of Hotels, and loved every second of our stay there.

What makes it unique is the presence of ancient structures like Maratha temples, Mughal char bagh, and a Baradari (pavilion).

Once inside the property, the commotion of the city fades away. The quietness, solitude, and the old world charm – Neemrana’s Deo Bagh has it all.

Where to Eat in Gwalior

Gwalior is historically and culturally rich. You know right? But do you know that it’s gastronomically rich too? The divergent rulers not only left behind their legacy in the form of various monuments but also influenced the culinary scene in Gwalior.

You can experience the culinary culture in Gwalior in its variety of cuisines.

Have Bedai (a poori or kachori stuffed with spicy lentils) and Jalebi for a hearty breakfast at S.S.Kachori Wala , an 80-year-old iconic hole-in-the-wall in Naya Bazaar.

Walk down to Bahadura Sweets to relish the best boondi ladoos in Gwalior or if you have a stuffed tummy just parcel them to eat later. Anywhichways you gotta taste them!

Lunch? Sorted. How about hot, huge, crispy, and delicious Parathas (layers of dough with your favorite fillings cooked in pure ghee) with achar and sabzi for lunch? Already hungry? Head to Dilli Parathewala in Sarafa Bazaar for the mouthwatering parathas.

You can’t leave Gwalior before you eat at one of its Kwality Restaurants . So, make your way towards this simple yet awesome fine-dining restaurant that serves finger-licking food for dinner.

Kwality has two outlets in Gwalior – City Center and Lashkar. Paneer malmal and chicken tikka masala are their must-try dishes.

Buy a box or two of Morena gajak from Daulat Ram Gupta Gajak Bhandaar at Nai Sadak, Lashkar before you leave Gwalior. Bring back home the finest gajak in the country for friends, relatives, and of course yourself.
