World Cup Trophy in Pune

Pune, Sept 26, 2023: The cricket-loving city of Pune is abuzz with excitement as it plays host to the ICC World Cup 2023 Trophy Tour today. From 1 PM to 6 PM, a specially designed bus will weave through the city streets, giving fans a golden opportunity to witness the coveted ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy up close.

While the MCA Stadium in Pune is already in the spotlight for hosting electrifying matches, including a much-anticipated game featuring Team India, today’s trophy tour adds to the city’s cricketing fervour. This extraordinary journey will start from the iconic JW Marriot hotel, pausing for an extended halt at the Agriculture College Ground in Shivajinagar.

The tour celebrates the World Cup in a unique fashion. Not long ago, the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign made global headlines when the trophy was sent soaring into the stratosphere, an incredible 120,000 feet above our planet. Armed with 4k cameras, this breathtaking ascent into the edge of Earth’s atmosphere was captured in all its glory.

Post this stratospheric feat, which saw the trophy withstand temperatures plummeting to -65 degrees Celsius, the World Cup embarked on an international journey. This global tour spanned 18 countries and dazzled over 40 cities in 100 days.

Today, as Pune basks in the World Cup glory and the impending matches, the trophy tour is set to amplify the city’s cricketing enthusiasm manifold.

world cup trophy tour pune

Fans gathered in large numbers to have a glimpse of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy on Tuesday as it was displayed in Pune city and taken out in a massive procession organised by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA).

The trophy parade, led by NCP MLA and MCA president Rohit Pawar, was flagged off from JW Marriott on SB Road, passed through Symbiosis College, BMCC College and Fergusson College before ending at the Agricultural College Ground. Cricket lovers were provided an opportunity to take a selfie with the World Cup trophy.

The rally also witnessed the presence of Indian player Kedar Jadhav along with former India captain Chandu Borde and India’s former woman cricketer Kalpana Tapikar. The spirited crowd erupted in cheers for the trophy, chanting slogans like ‘Jeetega Bhai Jeetega, India Jeetega,’ ‘Vande Mataram,’ and ‘Ganpati Bappa Moraya’. The traditional Dhol-Tasha bands provided a warm welcome to the open-top bus bearing the World Cup trophy.

At the press conference preceding the rally, Rohit Pawar emphasised the historical significance of the moment. He said that both the MCA and the people of Pune were privileged as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and International Cricket Council (ICC) had granted Pune the opportunity to host the rally and display the trophy to all the fans. “The trophy belongs to the public and the public should have the chance to see it up close and even take photographs with it. With this opportunity, MCA became the first association to have received this honour,” Pawar said.

The World Cup trophy is currently on a tour of the country and is in Pune for a day. “We might have to wait another 25 to 30 years for the next chance, so let’s relish this moment,” he said.

Festive offer

Kalpana Tapikar who is also the member of the apex council, told The Indian Express , “I am very proud that we got five matches to host, I expect the same opportunity during the Women’s World Cup. Since this a historical moment, I am planning to complete the rally.”

The MCA president extended his gratitude to the fans for their huge turnout and the support they had shown.

The inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup match is set to be played on October 5 in Ahmedabad .

Then it set out on a frantic, 100-day tour across the globe, stopping in over 40 cities and 18 countries. Cricket World Cup 2023 Trophy tour in Pune

The upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 is only a few days away from its start. Ahead of the tournament, the Apex Council organized a trophy tour in Pune. The city will host their first ODI World Cup game. It hosted an ODI game for the first time in 2013. In that game, Australia beat India by 72 runs in what was the first ODI of the seven-match series 10 years back.

Two years back, the ground hosted the three-match ODI series against England. The Men In Blue won the series by 2-1. Since then, they have hosted the IPL 2022 games and didn’t get a single game this year. Meanwhile, ahead of the World Cup, a trophy tour via bus was conducted. To watch the event, the locals came despite the heavy rains. Some of them were holding a placard of Rohit Sharma with the trophy.

ODI World Cup 2023 games at Pune

Talking about the games at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune will host four games of the tournament. India will play only one, i.e. against Bangladesh. That game will take place five days after their all-important game against Pakistan on October 14. Apart from this, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will lock horns on the 30th. The last game between the two teams went down the wire. Apparently, the Afghans needed to chase down whatever they needed in just 31.1 overs or something. They came close but failed to achieve the target.

After them, the 2015 semifinalist, South Africa will take on New Zealand , who beat the Proteas in the iconic semis game eight years back.

Sean Paul, Kes team up for official anthem of ICC T20 World Cup 2024

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup Trophy Tour 2024 will continue in the lead-up to the tournament, moving to Barbados, the venue of the tournament final on June 29, after previous visits to parts of the USA and South America.

Set for launch in the coming weeks, the track is produced by Michael "Tano" Montano and will be accompanied by the song's film clip, featuring several well-known superstars.

A leading figure in the music industry for over two decades, the widely acclaimed Sean Paul says he hopes to capture the essence of Caribbean music with a touch of international flair.

"Cricket has always been a major part of our culture, so I'm honoured to record the official anthem for the T20 World Cup."

"I'm a big fan of Kes, and the track will feature a nice touch of the Caribbean, with some dance, to an international vibe, and of course, Soca - it will be a real anthem for people to sing out and feel the spirit of unity."

Kees Dieffenthaller, known to the world as Kes and the lead singer of Trinidad and Tobago-based Kes the Band, intends to bring a unique vibe to the tournament via the anthem.

"Our mission has always been about bringing worlds together, so blending cricket with music is a powerful combination. Shoutouts to Sean Paul, Tano, and the whole team for creating this musical vibe."

"Can't wait for everyone to sing along to this worldwide anthem and bring the party to stadiums across the West Indies and the USA."

ICC General Manager, Marketing and Communications, Claire Furlong, looks forward to the work of the artists in a song that will appeal to cricket fans the world over.

"We are delighted to have two globally recognised artists who are at the top of their genres in Sean Paul and Kes produce our tournament anthem, which will set the tone for the biggest cricket carnival spectacle ever.

"Fans can expect a song that will reflect the Caribbean identity while retaining universal appeal for global cricket fans, themed around the event's marketing campaign 'Out of this World'".

Only 50 days until the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 kicks off in the USA and West Indies. Marking the special occasion with a sneak peek of the official tournament anthem featuring well-known superstars.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that iconic Grammy award winning artist Sean Paul and Soca superstar Kes will join forces to produce the official anthem of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 hosted in the West Indies and USA.

With just 50 days-to-go until the Men’s T20 World Cup begins, the anthem’s production is in full swing for the track that will reverberate around the world when 20 international teams come together across the West Indies and USA from 1-29 June. The anthem is being produced by Michael “Tano” Montano and will be launched in the coming weeks, together with the music video, which will feature cameos from several well-known superstars. View the teaser here (link to be inserted with video).

Grammy Award winner Sean Paul is a Jamaican dancehall artist, philanthropist and record producer who has also earned several Grammy, Latin Music and Billboard Music Awards nominations. He is also the recipient of an MTV Europe Music Award (2003), Grammy Award winner ‘Dutty Rock’ Reggae Album of the Year (2004) the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards for ‘Top Reggae Artiste of the Year’ (2005), an American Music Award (2006), of which he is the only Jamaican artiste to have won in the category for ‘Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist’, and MOBO Award (2013).

Kees Dieffenthaller, known to the world as KES is the lead singer of Kes the Band, the eclectic outfit from Trinidad and Tobago behind some of modern Caribbean music’s most indelible anthems. In addition to his collaboration with Sean Paul on the tournament’s official anthem, Kes has shared the stage with the likes of Will Smith, Major Lazer and John Legend and has collaborated with artists from Wizkid to Snoop Dogg.

Grammy-award winning artist Sean Paul said: “Cricket has always been a major part of our culture, so I'm honoured to record the official anthem for the T20 World Cup. I'm a big fan of Kes and the track will feature a nice touch of the Caribbean, with some dance, to an international vibe and of course Soca - it will be a real anthem for people to sing out and feel the spirit of unity”

Soca superstar Kes said: "Our mission has always been about bringing worlds together, so blending cricket, (dear to us in the Caribbean), with music is a powerful combination. Shoutout to Sean Paul, Tano, and the whole team for creating this musical vibe. Can't wait for everyone to sing along to this worldwide anthem and bring the party to stadiums across the West Indies and USA."

The announcement of the artists to feature on the official anthem comes as Party-stand tickets for World Cup matches are also set to go on sale on Monday 15 April at 10h00am AST at tickets.t20worldcup.com , with prices starting at just US$25.

Building on the wave of excitement marking 50 days to go and following the international launch of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour in New York on 18 March where two-time T20 World Cup champion Chris Gayle and USA bowler Ali Khan lit up the Empire State Building, the Caribbean leg of the trophy tour blasts off today in Barbados, the venue for the final. ICC General Manager, Marketing and Communications Claire Furlong said: “Excitement is building towards the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, with the first match between USA and Canada starting in just 50 days' time at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas.

“We are delighted to have two globally recognised artists who are at the top of their genres in Sean Paul and Kes produce our tournament anthem, which will set the tone for the biggest cricket carnival spectacle ever. Fans can expect a song that will reflect the Caribbean identity, while retaining universal appeal for global cricket fans, themed around the event’s marketing campaign ‘Out of this World’.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Tournament Director Fawwaz Baksh said: “The countdown is truly on with 50 days to go. The upcoming launch of the official tournament anthem led by Grammy Award winner Sean Paul and Soca icon Kes comes as we get ready to launch party-stand tickets which is something fans have been eagerly awaiting. These will go on sale online at tickets.t20worldcup.com from 15 April. In addition to party-stand tickets for group stage and selected Super 8 matches, fans can also purchase bundled party-stand packages which will allow them the opportunity to secure tickets to the semi-finals and final.
