Introduction

Embarking on a desert safari is an exciting and adventurous experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and vastness of the desert landscape. Whether you are planning a trip to the Sahara in Africa, the Arabian desert, or the dunes of the American Southwest, it’s important to be prepared for the unique challenges that the desert environment presents.

One key aspect to consider when preparing for a desert safari is what to wear. The right clothing not only ensures your comfort, but also protects you from the harsh elements and potential risks associated with desert travel. From headgear and accessories to appropriate footwear, understanding the essentials of desert attire is crucial for a successful and enjoyable safari.

In this article, we will delve into the specific clothing requirements for a desert safari, offering practical tips and insights to help you dress appropriately for your adventure. Whether you are a man or a woman, traveling in the scorching heat of summer or the cooler temperatures of winter, we have you covered.

So, let’s get ready to explore the incredible world of desert safaris and discover the right wardrobe choices to make your experience unforgettable.

Understanding the Desert Environment

Before we dive into the specifics of what to wear on a desert safari, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the desert environment. Deserts are often characterized by extreme temperatures, arid landscapes, and sparse vegetation. They can be found across various regions of the world, each with its own unique characteristics.

The high temperatures in the desert can be overwhelming, especially during the day when the sun is at its peak. The lack of water and shade can exacerbate the heat, making it essential to protect yourself from sunburn and dehydration. On the other hand, desert temperatures can also drop significantly at night, so being prepared for the chilly desert evenings is equally important.

In addition to the extreme temperatures, deserts are known for their sandy and dusty terrain. Sand particles can be abrasive to the skin, while dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. Winds in the desert can also kick up sandstorms, further adding to the challenges of the environment. Taking all these factors into account, it becomes clear how crucial it is to choose clothing that offers protection, comfort, and practicality in the desert.

Understanding the desert environment will not only help you select appropriate clothing for your safari but also prepare you mentally for the conditions you may encounter. It’s important to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be mindful of your physical limits during your desert adventure.

Now that we have a better grasp of the unique challenges posed by the desert environment, let’s explore some essential clothing items to make your desert safari a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential Clothing for a Desert Safari

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, the key is to be prepared for the extreme temperatures and dusty conditions. Here are some essential clothing items to consider:

By having these essential clothing items in your desert safari wardrobe, you will be well-prepared to face the unique challenges and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Headgear and Accessories

When it comes to desert safaris, choosing the right headgear and accessories is crucial for protecting yourself from the harsh sun, dust, and sand. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Wide-brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is a must-have accessory for a desert safari. It provides shade for your face, neck, and ears, shielding you from the intense sun. Look for hats made from lightweight and breathable materials with a wide brim to maximize sun protection.
  • Headscarf: A headscarf is a versatile accessory that serves multiple purposes. It can protect your head and hair from the sun, keep sand and dust out of your face, and provide an extra layer of insulation during cooler desert evenings. Opt for a lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton or linen.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright desert sun and minimize the effects of glare and dust by wearing sunglasses with UV protection. Look for sunglasses that have a wraparound style to provide better coverage and prevent dust from entering your eyes.
  • Bandana or Buff: A bandana or buff is a handy accessory that can be used in multiple ways. It can be wrapped around your neck or face to provide protection from the sun, dust, and wind. Additionally, it can be moistened to provide a cooling effect on hot desert days.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is an essential item to protect exposed skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Look for a sunscreen with a high SPF rating and apply it generously on all exposed areas of your body, including your face, arms, and legs.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the desert, so carrying a water bottle is essential. Look for bottles with insulation to keep your water cool for longer durations. It is advisable to drink water regularly to prevent dehydration.
  • Camera and Binoculars: Capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife you encounter along your desert safari with a camera. Also, bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your ability to spot distant wildlife and take in the breathtaking views.
  • Insect Repellent: Depending on the location and time of year, insects such as mosquitoes and biting flies may be present in the desert. Carry insect repellent to protect yourself from bites and potential discomfort.
  • First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to have a basic first aid kit on hand in case of minor injuries or ailments. Include items such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.
  • Compass or GPS: In the vast and sometimes disorienting desert landscape, having a compass or a GPS device can help you navigate and ensure you stay on track during your safari.

By being equipped with the right headgear and accessories, you’ll not only protect yourself from the elements but also enhance your comfort and overall enjoyment of your desert adventure.

Footwear Options for Desert Safaris

Choosing the right footwear for a desert safari is crucial as it determines your comfort and safety while traversing the sandy and rugged terrains. Here are some footwear options to consider:

  • Sandals: For shorter walks or during the evenings when temperatures are cooler, a comfortable pair of sandals can be a great choice. Opt for sandals with secure straps and sturdy soles to protect your feet and provide grip on uneven surfaces.
  • Hiking Boots: If you plan to engage in longer walks or hikes, sturdy hiking boots offer excellent support and protection for your feet. Look for boots with ankle support, durable traction soles, and water-resistant properties.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: Closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers or athletic shoes, can also be suitable for a desert safari. Choose lightweight and breathable options made from synthetic materials for better airflow and moisture-wicking abilities.
  • Gaiters: Gaiters are protective coverings worn over your lower legs and footwear. They provide an additional layer of defense against thorny bushes, crawling insects, and sand entering your shoes.
  • Socks: Don’t overlook the importance of wearing the right socks in the desert. Look for moisture-wicking and quick-drying socks to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton socks as they retain moisture and can lead to blisters.
  • Sandals with Straps: If you prefer the comfort of sandals but want additional protection, consider sandals with adjustable straps that secure your feet and prevent sand from entering.
  • Extra Pair of Shoes: It’s always a good idea to bring an extra pair of lightweight, comfortable shoes in case your primary footwear gets wet or damaged.

Whichever footwear option you choose, make sure that it is well-fitted, provides adequate support, and is suitable for the activities you plan to undertake during your desert safari. Additionally, breaking in new shoes before your trip can help prevent discomfort and blisters.

Remember to regularly check your footwear for any sand or pebbles that may have accumulated, as these can cause discomfort and affect your ability to walk comfortably. Taking care of your feet and investing in suitable footwear will ensure that you can fully enjoy every step of your desert adventure.

Appropriate Clothing for Men

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, men should prioritize comfort, protection, and practicality. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for men:

  • Lightweight Shirts: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight shirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Long sleeves can provide added protection from the sun and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.
  • T-shirts: Pack a few comfortable t-shirts, preferably made from moisture-wicking materials, which can help keep you cool and dry in the desert heat.
  • Light-colored Clothing: Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and helps to keep you cooler. Choose shades like white, beige, or light pastels for your shirts and pants.
  • Long Pants: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight pants made of breathable materials like cotton or linen. Pants provide protection from the sun, insects, and rough surfaces. Avoid shorts, as they leave your legs exposed to potential hazards.
  • Comfortable Shorts: For more relaxed moments or in the evenings when temperatures are cooler, pack a couple of pairs of comfortable shorts that allow for ease of movement.
  • Belt: A sturdy belt will not only help keep your pants secure but also allow you to comfortably attach small essentials such as a camera pouch or a water bottle holder.
  • Jacket or Sweater: As temperatures can drop significantly during desert evenings, pack a lightweight jacket or sweater for layering to keep you warm and comfortable.
  • Swimwear: If you have the opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, don’t forget to pack swim trunks.
  • Comfortable Undergarments: Choose moisture-wicking and breathable underwear to prevent discomfort and chafing.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a bandana or scarf to protect your head, eyes, and face from the sun, dust, and sand.

Remember to pack enough clothing for the duration of your safari, taking into account the activities you plan to engage in and the length of your trip. Additionally, consider carrying a small laundry kit or some travel-sized detergent to wash and refresh your clothes during longer excursions.

By choosing appropriate clothing that strikes a balance between functionality and comfort, you’ll be ready to enjoy the beauty of the desert while keeping yourself protected and at ease.

Appropriate Clothing for Women

Women embarking on a desert safari should prioritize comfort, protection, and versatility when choosing their clothing. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for women:

  • Maxi Dresses or Skirts: Opt for lightweight maxi dresses or skirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These provide excellent coverage while allowing air circulation to keep you cool in the desert heat.
  • Lightweight Shirts and Blouses: Pack loose-fitting, lightweight shirts and blouses that are made from breathable materials. Long sleeves can offer added protection from the sun, insects, and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.

  • Full-Length Pants or Capris: Choose loose-fitting, full-length pants or capris made from lightweight materials like cotton or linen. These will protect your legs from the sun, insects, and abrasive surfaces.
  • Maxi or Midi Length Skirts: Choose flowing maxi or midi skirts that provide comfort and coverage. These can be paired with a lightweight top or blouse for a stylish desert safari look.
  • Swimwear: If there’s an opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, be sure to pack your favorite swimsuit.

Keep in mind that cultural considerations may also influence your clothing choices. It’s always respectful to dress modestly and follow any specific guidelines or customs of the region you are visiting. Be sure to research and understand the local culture before your trip to ensure that your clothing choices align with the local customs.

By choosing appropriate clothing that prioritizes comfort, modesty, and protection, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while feeling confident and at ease.

Dressing for Different Times of the Year

When planning a desert safari, it’s important to consider the time of year and the weather conditions you may encounter. Here are some tips for dressing appropriately for different seasons:

  • Summer: Summers in the desert can be scorching hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). During this time, it’s important to prioritize lightweight and breathable clothing. Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored garments that provide ample coverage and protection from the sun. Choose natural fabrics like cotton or linen, as they allow for better air circulation and help wick away sweat. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense sun.
  • Winter: Winter temperatures in the desert can drop significantly, especially during the evenings. Layering your clothing is essential during this time. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric, followed by a light sweater or jacket. Depending on the temperatures, you may need a heavier jacket or coat. Opt for thermal or woolen socks to keep your feet warm. Remember to carry a hat and gloves to protect your extremities from the cold.
  • Transitional Seasons (Spring and Fall): Transitional seasons can bring more moderate temperatures to the desert. Mornings and evenings may be cooler, while the days can still be warm. Dressing in layers is key during these seasons. Begin with a lightweight base layer, add a long-sleeved shirt or blouse, and finish with a light jacket or sweater. Keep a scarf handy for sudden temperature changes or to protect yourself from sandstorms.

It’s also important to stay updated on weather forecasts before your trip to ensure you are prepared for any sudden changes in temperature or weather conditions. Pack accordingly, considering both the daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Lastly, regardless of the season, don’t forget to wear comfortable and supportive footwear, carry essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and always have a sufficient supply of sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

By dressing appropriately for the specific season and weather conditions, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while staying comfortable and protected throughout your journey.

Tips for Comfortable and Safe Dressing

When preparing for a desert safari, comfort and safety should be your top priorities. Here are some essential tips to ensure that you dress comfortably and safely for your adventure:

  • Choose Loose-Fitting Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting garments that allow air circulation and freedom of movement. Tight clothing can restrict blood flow and make you feel uncomfortable, especially in the heat of the desert.
  • Prioritize Breathable Fabrics: Select clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials allow air to flow through, helping to regulate your body temperature and prevent excessive sweating.
  • Protect Yourself from the Sun: The desert sun can be intense, so protect yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Covering exposed skin with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide an additional layer of sun protection.
  • Layer Your Clothing: Desert temperatures can vary significantly between day and night. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing accordingly. Start with a base layer, such as a moisture-wicking shirt, add a lightweight jacket or sweater for insulation when needed, and consider a scarf or shawl to protect against temperature changes and sandstorms.
  • Protect Your Feet: Opt for closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals to protect your feet from the desert’s rough terrains, thorny plants, and hot sand. Consider wearing socks made from moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters.
  • Carry Essential Accessories: Besides the obvious sun protection items, don’t forget to bring items like insect repellent, a first aid kit, a compass or GPS, and a suitable backpack or daypack to carry your essentials.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial in the desert. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Consider bringing electrolyte packets to replenish lost minerals and salts.
  • Be Mindful of Cultural Sensitivities: If you are visiting a desert region with cultural sensitivities, it’s important to dress modestly and respectfully. Research and familiarize yourself with local customs and dress codes to ensure your clothing choices align with the cultural norms.
  • Bring a Change of Clothes: In the desert, dust and sand can quickly accumulate on your clothing. Having a change of clothes allows you to freshen up and feel more comfortable during longer excursions.
  • Follow Safety Guidelines: Always follow the safety guidelines and instructions provided by your tour operator or guide. Be aware of potential dangers and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety throughout your desert safari.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to dress comfortably and safely for your desert adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magnificent landscapes while enjoying peace of mind.

Packing for a safari is a science: You need to be prepared for changing temperatures, high sun, and plenty of dust, as well as cocktail hour and a dip in the pool—and all of your safari outfits, plus toiletries and gear, have to fit in a soft-sided duffel with a strict weight limit. We polled our resident experts and trusted specialists for safari outfit ideas, whether you're staying in a luxe tented camp on the Okavango Delta in Botwsana or traversing the Sabi Sands game reserve in South Africa . Note that most safari outfitters will provide travelers with an itemized packing list, so check with yours about specifics (as well as any vaccines or medications you might need) before you go.

Getting there

Most safari camps are only accessible by small propeller planes, which don’t allow hard-sided luggage. Pack everything in soft duffels that can be easily tossed into the back of the plane or the back of a Land Rover (weight limits are strict, too, so make sure you check with the outfitter before you go). Our advice: bring along some low-tech entertainment and have your camera handy for the views. Go Pro's Hero 9 has built-in tech to help keep any footage you shoot looking steady, making it perfect for bumpy rides.

On a game drive

Specialists disagree on the details, but you’re generally advised to avoid red and white clothing (as well as anything Day-Glo) while on game drives because it can attract insects or make you more visible to certain animals. Instead, go for clothing in shades of khaki, brown, and olive, which help you to blend in with the environment and hide dust and dirt, and pair it with some sneakers with a decent tread (on most safaris, you don’t need serious hiking boots). You’ll also want to pack plenty of layers since it can be chilly in the early morning, and blazing hot a few hours later. Don't forget a hat to help keep your skin protected under the harsh midday sun.

Around camp

You’ll want casual, cozy clothes to wear while you’re lounging around camp in between your daily excursions. A durable sandal with some grip will work just fine, and don’t forget a bathing suit —many lodges or tented camps have gorgeous pools.

Safari chic dinner

Some travelers like to have a more dressed-up option for cocktail hour and dinner back at camp—think flowy, breezy dresses, flats that can withstand a little dust, and a warm scarf to wrap yourself up in. Jumpsuits are a great option since it eliminates having to pack both tops and bottoms for evenings. In terms of accessories, leave any really blingy jewelry at home and opt for a more simple, pared down look.

The next step is what to wear or  what do people wear in the desert ; there are so many options like wearing a jumpsuit, causal cotton pants, Loose or stretchy pants, or even leggings, Bermuda Shorts, Or high-rise long shorts.

The shorts idea is best for summer. But during winter, “November to February the weather gets cold in the middle of the desert after sunset and early morning.

For the tops, I will recommend at least half sleeve shirts. Half sleeve shirts work in both winter & summer as you have to follow the rules of the UAE dress code. So if you are wearing a jumpsuit, wear a blouse on it. So here our dress issue gets resolved; now come to the point, wear sneakers, sandals, or flip-flops. Outfit for Camel Ride

Wearing clothes with zipper pockets can help keep your belongings secure and prevent them from falling out during the camel ride.
  • A scarf or tight-fitting cap or hat:  A scarf or cap can help protect your head and neck from the sun and wind and keep your hair out of your face. We recommend using a scarf so you can cover your nose and mouth. It helps to stop the sand from entering your mouth.
  • Sunscreen:  It is important to protect your skin from the intense sun in Dubai, so make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before your camel ride.
  • Sunglasses:  Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun and also the blowing sand.
  • Moisturizer:  The desert air can be very dry, so applying moisturizer will help keep your skin hydrated.

  • Wet Wipes:  Wet wipes can come in handy for cleaning off sand or dust from your face or hands during the ride.
  • Camera:  You will want to capture the beautiful scenery and your camel ride, so bring a camera or smartphone with you.

Wear something somewhat loose-fitted, so they’re comfortable to be in. As you have to sit in a land cruiser for at least an hour, you have to enjoy a camel ride, sandboarding, and quad biking. You can also buy an Arabian headscarf from the desert.

The Perfect Footwear for Dubai's Desert Safaris

The Importance of Proper Footwear  Wandering the vast expanse of the desert isn’t just about gazing at the horizon; it’s about doing it right.

  • Selecting the perfect shoe can make a world of difference. Picture this: you’re trudging through fine sand, with each step sinking you deeper. If you’re not wearing the right shoes, this picturesque journey can quickly become uncomfortable.
  • The desert may seem benign, but it hides many challenges – the searing heat of the midday sun or the surprisingly chilly nights. Proper footwear ensures you’re ready for these unpredictable shifts, protecting your feet from potential injuries and burns.

Understanding the Desert Terrain

  • Ever tried walking on a beach? Now, imagine that with shifting dunes that make each step a mini workout. The desert is unpredictable, and your shoes must rise to the occasion.
  • For the uninitiated, deserts can be full of surprises. While the days are hot and might make you want to throw on some sandals, nights can get cold, warranting sturdier footwear.

Best Footwear Choices

  • While the temptation to slip into sandals is real, closed shoes offer more protection against the desert’s challenges. They guard against hot sands and unexpected critters, protecting your feet.
  • Ever heard the saying, “It’s not about the shoe, but the material”? Okay, maybe that’s not an actual saying, but breathable materials make a significant difference in the desert. They allow your feet to breathe, reducing sweating and discomfort.
  • Sandals may offer ease, but sneakers win in the protection department. However, particular specialized sandals, designed for desert terrains could be a middle ground. Weigh the pros and cons based on your desert safari’s planned activities.

Specialized Desert Boots

  • Purpose-built for the desert, these boots offer maximum protection. They’re every desert adventurer’s dream, from their high ankle support to the heat-resistant material.
  • Several renowned brands, such as  Timberland  and Merrell, offer specialized desert boots. Depending on your budget and requirements, you can find a boot that’s perfect for you.

Desert Safari Activities & Footwear

Embarking on a desert safari promises many unique activities, each with its own challenges and requirements. With every thrilling activity, from dune bashing to horse riding, ensuring that your feet are clad in the best possible footwear tailored to the adventure you’re diving into is vital. Let’s explore the world of shoes for each of these exciting desert escapades.

1. Dune Bashing and Shoes

This exhilarating activity involves driving aggressively over dunes; the right shoes can make all the difference.

Footwear Recommendations:  Opt for shoes that offer excellent grip, ensuring that your feet remain firmly anchored even if the vehicle sways and rocks. Sneakers with a rubber sole or hiking boots are ideal for this activity. Breathability is a plus, as it can get entirely heated inside the vehicle.

2. Footwear For Camel Riding

A desert safari is incomplete without the iconic camel ride.

Footwear Recommendations:  Stability is the name of the game here. Shoes with a firm grip will help you remain steady atop these majestic creatures. Ankle boots or lace-up shoes are preferred as they prevent sand from entering and offer a snug fit, which is crucial when high up on a camel’s back.

3. Footwear For Sandboarding

Imagine snowboarding but on golden dunes!

Footwear Recommendations:  For sandboarding, traction is crucial. Opt for shoes that provide a good grip to prevent slips and falls. High ankle sneakers or boots with deep treads are suitable for this adrenaline-pumping activity.

4. Footwear for Quad Riding in the Desert

Quad bikes offer a thrilling way to explore the vast desert landscape.

Footwear Recommendations:  Shoes that offer protection against the heat, sand, and potential debris kicked up by the bike are essential. Closed-toe, sturdy shoes like hiking boots or specialized biking shoes are the top choices. They not only provide the necessary grip on the quad’s footrests but also ensure your feet are shielded from the elements.

5. Dune Buggy Ride Footwear

Dune buggies provide a unique experience of conquering the desert terrains.

Footwear Recommendations:  For dune buggy rides, look for shoes that grant stability and comfort. Closed shoes with a snug fit, such as sports sneakers, will prevent sand from entering and ensure a firm grip on the buggy’s pedals.

6. Footwear for Dirt Biking in the Desert

Dirt biking is a heart-pounding activity that requires the utmost precision.

Footwear Recommendations:  Specialized dirt biking boots are your best bet. They’re designed to offer maximum protection from impacts, are heat resistant, and provide excellent grip on the bike’s pedals. If you don’t have access to these, at the very least, wear high ankle boots to protect against potential sprains and injuries.

7. Horse Riding Footwear

Riding boots are the classic choice for this activity. They offer protection against chafing from the saddle and ensure your feet sit securely in the stirrups. In their absence, go for closed, calf-length boots with a slight heel to prevent your foot from sliding through the stirrup.

8. Desert Walk Footwear

During the camel ride, you can prevent your belongings from falling out by stuffing them inside garments with a zipper. A scarf, hat, or tight-fitting cap : A scarf or cap can keep your hair out of your face and shield your head and neck from the sun and wind. Using a scarf will allow you to cover your mouth and nose. What to Wear On a Safari: Safari Outfit Ideas & Inspo

what to wear on safari

As I attempted to pack for my trip to Kenya a few years ago, I was STRESSED. I read every. single. article. available online, but I never really found one that gave specific enough suggestions for what to wear on safari—which is why, when I got back, I knew I obviously had to create my own guide with PLENTY of cute safari outfit ideas.

This post primarily focuses on what clothes to wear on safari for women, but I’ve also included a few photos of what my husband wore, just in case you need outfit ideas for men as well!

safari outfit ideas

Below, I’ll give you specific examples about what clothes what to pack for a safari in the following categories: – jackets – pants – tops – footwear – accessories – insect repellent wipes – sunscreen – sunglasses – nighttime outfits – carry-on luggage and duffel bags – what to pack in the bag you take with you on your game drives

safari outfit ideas

Also: if you haven’t read my secrets to surviving a long-haul flight and my suggestions for comfy travel outfits , I’d recommend checking it out before your trip!

Consider this the only guide you will ever need to pack for a safari. ENJOY!

Scroll to the bottom for safari outfit inspo based on the looks I wore on my own trip.

WHAT TO WEAR ON SAFARI:

Most people will tell you to avoid navy blue or black clothing on safari, since dark colors attract tsetse flies (an insect native to tropical Africa.)

You’re better off with neutrals, like green, khaki, white, or light blue—especially because it gets hot. I’d recommend cute khaki trousers , lightweight lounge pants , breathable joggers , light sweats , or even leggings (but remember to avoid black.)

Also remember you’ll be sitting in whatever you wear for hours on end, so make sure you’re comfortable in whatever you choose.

One thing I read over and over again was the importance of layering. And it’s true: in the mornings and after sun down, the temperatures get fairly chilly, and you’ll want to be bundled up—but during the day, it gets oppressively hot.

The best advice I can give you is to start with a base layer (like a t-shirt or tank top ), then add a second layer (like a button-up shirt or light sweater), and finally, top it with a jacket or puffer vest + scarf.

I also LOOOOVE jumpsuits and would have totally brought some on my own trip if I had thought of it. They’re just so easy to throw on and they’re super comfortable. Find a few good picks below!

Here are similar options to what I wore, which you can click to shop:

This will depend on the type of safari you’re doing, but in my experience, hard core hiking boots (which I initially thought I needed) would have been totally unnecessary.

For the most part, you’ll be spending your game drives inside the vehicle and doing very little walking, so my advice is to wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.

Boots or high-top sneakers are great because they’ll cover your ankles, but I honestly saw one girl wearing sandals—and she was fine. (I wouldn’t wear sandals because of all the dirt/dust/insects, but you get the point.)

DUFFEL BAGS

Most safaris have strict weight restrictions on baggage because of the size of the plane you take into the desert. (More deets on that in my Safari 101 masterpost !) These duffels all fit way more than you’d expect and will meet the requirements.

WHAT TO WEAR AT NIGHT DURING SAFARI

This was one of the things I was most confused about. Do people dress up for dinner? Is it cold? What aesthetic should I be going for?

The answer: pretty much anything goes. Sanctuary Olonana , where I stayed, is considered on the “fancier” end, but there definitely wasn’t a dress code.

Some nights I wore a casual dress with a scarf, other nights I wore jeans and a blouse, and one night we decided to go straight to dinner from a drive, which meant I showed up in my safari clothes.

I wouldn’t buy anything special to wear at night—just work with what you have.

ACCESSORIES

what to wear on safari outfit

Temperatures tend to fluctuate dramatically on safari, so layers—and scarves—are key.

Plus, if you find yourself engulfed in a dust storm, you’ll be grateful to have something to cover your face. I’d recommend something warm for the morning, and a lighter alternative during the day and at night.

I wore a heavier blanket scarf (similar to the below) over my shoulders in the mornings and late at night, and a lighter silk scarf by Cuyana wrapped around my neck during the day.

Madewell  Bandana Scarf

This bandana scarf is IDEAL for safari — plus it’s under $40 and is a light color.

These deet wipes were a godsent. Super easy to toss into your bag, and unlike a large can of insect repellent, they barely took up any room.

Bonus: they come in a resealable packet. These are the exact ones I bought, and I only got bit once.

deet wipes what to pack on safari

I wouldn’t have survived without this genius brush-on sunscreen , which I kept in my bag during game-drives and re-applied constantly.

Because most of your time is spent driving through dust and dirt, the idea of putting liquid sunscreen on felt kind of gross to me. This little brush was the perfection solution.

brush on sunscreen safari packing essentials

I’m a huge fan of Ray Ban aviators, but more recently I bought these $15 dupes on Amazon and I’ve been LIVING in them. If you’re the kind of person who constantly misplaces your sunglasses – I would highly, highly recommend.

MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

After a few days of being in the desert, my hair literally felt like straw. Luckily I’m a PSYCHO and anticipated that the arid climate would require a super hydrating shampoo and conditioner, so I packed the travel-sized version of this super moisturizing Briogeo shampoo and conditioner.

safari desert outfit

My husband and I both wore our hats every single day. Having the sun beat down on you for hours can be a killer, plus, you KNOW how I feel about wrinkles. Don’t be a dummy. Bring a hat.

This one from Madewell is PERFECT. Had I seen it before my trip, it’s definitely what I would have bought.

PACKING CUBES

best packing cubes for long trips

Set of 7 packing cube s, $21

Space is often limited on the small charter flights to the Masai Mara and other Kenya safari destinations, which means that every inch counts.

Packing cubes were a game changer for me. They not only keep your belongings neatly organized, but they also compress items to help maximize space. (Another one of my top space-saving travel hacks ? Use contact lens cases to store liquids like foundation and moisturizer. It frees up SO much room in your toiletry bag .)

Calpak and Stoney Clover both make great ones, or you can find them on places like Amazon (the ones I linked here are perfect and reasonably priced .)

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU ON GAME DRIVES

  • Blanket scarf
  • Hairbrush (the wind really does a number on your hair & you obviously want to look FRESH for pics)
  • Lipbalm/Chapstick
  • External battery & charging cord
  • Bottle of water
  • Powder sunscreen (to reapply during the day)
  • Fanny pack (perfect for storing your must-haves)
  • Jacket (for early in the morning and after the sun went down)
  • Hand sanitizer or wet wipes

Your Guide to a Desert Safari Outfit

  • Dubai Blogs
  • BY Samrah Naeem
  • DATE 03/12/2024

Forget the dusty khakis and bland beiges! A desert safari isn't your average wildlife tour. This is an adventure unlike any other. While the scenery might be unlike anything you've experienced before, the importance of choosing the right outfit remains the same. Just like on any adventure, comfortable and practical clothing is key to making the most of your experience.

Think of it this way: you wouldn't wear a tuxedo to a pool party, would you? So why settle for the same-old safari attire when you're embarking on a desert adventure? Choosing the right outfit for a desert safari isn't just about practicality (although that's important too!), it's more about embracing the whimsical spirit of the journey. So, let’s get into the in-depth discussion of the desert Safari outfit:

Why Does Your Outfit Matter?

While sun protection is a top priority on any desert adventure, choosing the right outfit for a desert safari goes beyond practicality. It's about enhancing your experience.  Imagine feeling restricted and uncomfortable because your clothes are too stiff or hot. Now, picture yourself gliding across a dune in a comfortable, flowing dress that matches the vibrant landscape. The right outfit allows you to move freely, participate in activities , and fully get into the mood of enjoying the atmosphere of a desert safari.

Outfit Ideas for Men and Women

Now, let's get down to the main part! Here are some outfit ideas to inspire your inner desert adventurer for both the summer sun and the cooler winter nights.

safari desert outfit

For Summertime:

  • For the Ladies: The most picture-perfect outfit that serves the most practicality is a long, beautiful, flowy maxi dress in a vibrant sunset orange or a playful pistachio green.  Pair it with a straw sunhat adorned with a cascade of silk flowers and strappy sandals that sparkle like spun gold. Accessorize with a chunky candy-colored necklace and a pair of mirrored sunglasses to reflect the dazzling desert landscape.
  • For the Gents: Ditch the boring cargo pants and go for lightweight, linen chinos in a cool shade of sky blue.  A crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up adds a touch of sophistication, while a pair of desert boots in a rich caramel brown provides the practicality you need for navigating the terrain. Finish the look with a straw fedora hat and a pair of polarized sunglasses to keep the desert glare at bay.

safari desert outfit

For Winters:

The desert can get surprisingly chilly at night, even in the winter.  Here's how to stay warm and stylish on your desert safari:

  • For the Ladies: Layer up in cozy comfort with a chunky knit cardigan in a rich berry tone over a flowy cream-colored blouse.  For warmth and a touch of whimsy, you may pair it with a pair of high-waisted leggings in a warm cinnamon brown and add a pair of knee-high boots in a deep chocolate hue. Top it all off with a beanie in a playful vanilla white with pom-pom detail, and don't forget a cozy scarf in a marbled caramel and cream pattern!
  • For the Gents:   The fool-proof desert Safari outfit for men in winter would be a brown leather jacket over a warm, flannel shirt in a classic red and black check pattern. A pair of dark-wash jeans and sturdy hiking boots will provide all the comfort and warmth you need for exploring the desert at night. Finish the look with a thick, cable-knit beanie in a neutral grey and a scarf in a warm mustard yellow to add a pop of color.

Remember: Don't forget the essentials! Sunscreen is a must, no matter the season, and a light backpack is perfect for carrying water, a camera, and any other essentials you might need on your adventure.

So, there you have it!  With a little imagination and these tips, you can ditch the drab and embrace the fab on your next desert safari trip . After all, an adventure this amazing deserves an outfit that's just as spectacular and on-point!

Whether you are headed to the Burning Man festival in Nevada, a relaxing vacation in Palm Springs, or exploring Morocco, we are sure to have some desert outfits and desert clothing ideas you’ll love!

How should I dress for the desert?

The desert is known specifically for two things; high temperatures during the day and low humidity. So, you’ll want to make sure you dress appropriately. During the day it’s best to wear light and airy clothing that is breathable and keeps you cool . You’ll also want to make sure you have ample sun protection so sun hats are always a good idea .

At night, temperatures can drop quite drastically in the desert, so it’s important to pack layers if you plan to be outside in the evenings. Sweaters, light jackets, pants, and warm socks, are all worth packing for the desert evenings .

Chic Desert Outfits

Below are our favorite stylish and modern desert outfits that can be adapted from day to night.

Midi skirt + long sleeve button-down.

woman wearing a flowy white button up shirt with a green midi length printed skirt and sandals

The first desert outfit is both stylish and practical. A lightweight linen or cotton midi skirt is comfortable and airy paired with a white cotton or linen button-down shirt.

This outfit is effortless and chic, yet provides great coverage against the sun and is still breathable enough to keep you feeling cool and comfortable. A pair of simple flip-flop sandals and a woven leather tote bag finishes the look.

From day to night: In the evening, add a knit cardigan and swap the flip-flops for sneakers or ankle boots. If it’s too chilly for the midi skirt, opt for a pair of jeans instead.

Flowy maxi dress + sun hat.

woman wearing a straw hat, long flowy dark pink dress and sandals

If you are staying at a resort in the desert, this is a perfect look. A long flowy maxi dress made from cotton or linen will keep you cool and relaxed. It also works as a great cover-up if you are going to be hanging around a pool for the day.

A wide-brim sun hat is practical and stylish, protecting you from the hot sun and adding a modern vibe to this desert outfit.

From day to night: In the evening add a warm crewneck sweater over the dress and wear a pair of heeled boots for a cute boho look! Or, instead of a sleeveless dress, go with a long sleeve maxi dress like the one linked above.

sweatshirt + biker shorts.

woman wearing an ivory sweatshirt with biker shorts, socks and sandals

Heading for early morning coffee on your desert trip? This is a great outfit to try. The sweatshirt provides warmth before the full heat of the day, and the shorts are comfortable and practical.

Socks will keep your toes warm and look cute with pillow slide sandals, but you can take them off when the temperature starts to heat up. Wear a cropped tank under the sweatshirt and you’ll be ready for a day of fun activities.

Tip: Add a baseball cap for extra sun protection!

Lightweight blouse + denim shorts.

woman wearing a printed orange long sleeve shirt, denim shorts, and sandals

For desert destinations like Joshua Tree, Arizona, Nevada, and Palm Springs, an outfit like this is perfect. You’ll look fashionable and cute, and won’t be too hot.

Jeans are best kept for evening wear in the desert when the sun goes down and the temperatures drop. But, a pair of denim shorts are fine during the day as the weather is not humid and you won’t overheat in them.

This colorful lightweight top is breathable and airy, and the sandals and straw tote complete the desert vibe.

From day to night: Swap the denim shorts for a pair of jeans and add a small jacket to make sure you are feeling warm enough if the temperatures drop.

Polo shirt + wide-leg trousers.

woman wearing a knit polo t-shirt and white wide leg trousers

In places like Morocco or Dubai, this is a chic and practical desert outfit. A lightweight t-shirt with an elevated vibe looks great with light linen or cotton trousers.

Paired with slides and a straw tote the outfit is classy, comfortable, and great for dry, hot weather. Add a wide-brim hat for added protection from the sun, and don’t forget sunglasses!

From day to night: This outfit would work great in the evenings with the addition of a utility jacket or warm sweater. Go with loafers or flats to keep your toes warm!

Swimsuit, linen shirt + bucket hat.

woman wearing an oversized white button up shirt over a green two-piece swimsuit with sandals

Palm Springs is calling in this cute resort-worthy desert outfit. If you are headed to a place with a pool you’ll want to make sure you don’t forget a cute swimsuit, as well as a lightweight cover-up so you don’t burn!

Bucket hats are all the rage right now and we are smitten over raffia bucket hats. They offer sun protection with a cute 90s vibe.

cotton blouse + pleated plissé pants.

woman wearing a white button up shirt, pleated trousers, and heeled sandals

This outfit is giving us ‘dinner in the desert’ vibes. Many desert destinations have bustling cities with lots of nice restaurants, so put on a simple cotton button-down blouse, a pair of chic plissé style pants, and your favorite heeled sandals.

The look is elevated and yet minimal at the same time with the perfect pop of color.

From day to night: If the temperature drops at night, bring along a blazer or jacket to shrug over your shoulders!

little black dress.

woman wearing a mini black slip dress in the desert

If a desert festival is calling your name, put on a cute linen black mini dress and a pair of comfortable sandals. Add sunglasses and a straw tote bag and you’ll be ready to take on the day and dance your heart away.

While black might not seem like the best color for desert clothing, as long as you go with a looser fit and lightweight, breathable fabric, you’ll feel cool and comfortable.

From day to night: Wear a cozy oversized jacket over the dress and swap the sandals for combat boots for a cute desert nightlife look.

crochet dress + sandals.

woman wearing a rainbow striped crochet dress

Last summer crochet dresses took the fashion world by storm, and this trend shows no signs of stopping. We’re here for it!

A long-sleeve, midi-length crochet dress offers the perfect mix of coverage from the sun and breathability from the fabric so you don’t overheat in the desert climate. We love this colorful rainbow midi dress for a pop of color, but you can easily go with a neutral cream, tan, or black.

From day to night: Crochet dresses actually look really great with boots (see here) , and give a boho vibe. So in the evening, swap the sandals for boots and add an oversized denim jacket.

airy cotton shorts set.

woman wearing a matching maroon striped button up shirt and shorts set with sandals

Matching sets always have an elevated look. We love this striped set from Faithfull The Brand paired with a straw tote and simple slides. The set is made from 100% cotton so it’s breathable and airy, and the long sleeves on the shirt provide good sun coverage.

This is a great outfit for sightseeing (unless you are in the Sahara, then we would recommend pants over shorts!) , hanging out by the resort pool, or exploring the markets.

slip dress + slides.

woman wearing a long printed black slip dress

This is another chic dinner look for Palm Springs, Arizona, or Nevada. The slip dress gives an elevated vibe and is great for warm evenings. We love this cutout dress from Johanna Ortiz with brown sandals and the YSL clutch.

If the budget allows, go for this outfit! Otherwise, you can recreate this look with more budget-friendly pieces!

From day to night: If the temperature drops at night where you’re going, add an oversized blazer for an extra layer of warmth.

easy breezy two-piece set.

woman weaning a matching cotton gauze brown crop top and pant set with sandals

When it comes to desert attire, muslin is a perfect fabric as it is a finely and loosely woven cotton that is breathable and airy. This two-piece set is lightweight and will keep you feeling cool in the desert heat.

As mentioned before, we love the look of a matching set. Neutrals are timeless, and this brown color is classy and sophisticated. Add a long sleeve button-up shirt for extra coverage, or swap the crop top for a simple white cotton tank if you find this outfit too revealing for your taste.

simple white dress.

woman in the desert wearing a white shirt dress with a belt

A classic white shirt dress is a great desert option for locations like Egypt, Morocco, and Dubai. You’ll feel cool and comfortable when exploring, and you’ll look timeless and chic.

A shirt dress will provide more coverage and protection from the sun. So bring along a hat and enjoy the scenery!

What is desert chic clothing?

Desert chic clothing consists of pieces that are lightweight, breathable, and airy but have a fashionable and elevated look. Matching cotton sets , muslin maxi dresses , linen trousers , and woven sun hats are all examples of desert chic attire.

When visiting desert destinations you have to consider the high daytime temperatures and dry climate so that you stay comfortable, but this doesn’t mean you can’t look chic at the same time!

What to wear to a desert safari: complete dress code

You’ve finally booked that long-awaited trip to the land of the sand and can’t wait to see all the cloud-scraping towers, gold-dipped attractions and record-breaking wonders of Dubai for yourself. However, as most travellers would probably agree, one of the biggest challenges involved in the art of wanderlust starts with an empty suitcase and no idea what to fill it with. Since your impressive Dubai itinerary surely includes an epic adventure in the majestic desert dunes, we’re here to help you out a bit. So grab a pen and your packing list and keep reading to find out how to dress for a desert safari to enjoy your exceptional escapade to the fullest.

Freedom in the desert

Keep things light and bright

An action-packed desert safari is guaranteed to be one of the biggest highlights of your trip. But choosing the perfect dress code for a desert safari in Dubai, can make or break your time in the dunes. Although you’ll most likely be accompanied by other tourists on your sand-filled adventure, it’s still important to take both weather conditions and the local dress code into consideration when choosing your fit for the day.

Our number one recommendation on how to dress for a desert safari, is to opt for lightweight and breathable clothing, since daytime temperatures can definitely have the mercury shooting for the skies. Your best bet is to go for natural materials like cotton and linen and steer clear of synthetics. As most desert activities require strolling the sands in direct sunlight, it’s important to keep yourself covered. If you’re trying to figure out what to wear to a desert safari during the summer, we suggest making sure you pack a long-sleeved shirt and preferably a pair of lightweight long trousers. You can, of course, show up in a pair of shorts, but bear in mind that you’ll be spending quite a bit of your time in an air-conditioned 4x4 and as soon as the sun drops in the desert, so will the temperature. When choosing their preferred pair of bottoms, women should also be cautious of overly revealing clothing, to avoid coming off as offensive in the United Arab Emirates.

As mentioned, depending on the season, the desert can be pretty cold (we’re talking freezing) in the early sunrise hours and in the evening. So if you’re thinking about what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, this is where layers come in. You won’t go wrong with bringing a comfortable hoodie, light jacket, poncho or big shawl with you. It will keep you warm on both an early morning safari as well as during the legendary evening safari.

When it comes to figuring out your perfect colour scheme to dress up for a desert safari, we’d suggest keeping things on the bright side. If you’re looking to pop on those Insta-worthy shots you’ll be sharing with your friends, go for vibrant colours or classic whites. To avoid attracting any additional sunrays, it’s best to leave the darker tones for your next ski trip.

Sunset in the desert

If the shoe fits…

…make sure it’s comfortable and preferably closed-toe when aiming for that winning dress code for a desert safari in Dubai. When it comes to choosing how to dress for a desert safari, picking the right kicks is almost as important as everything north of it. Though you can of course slip into your favourite sandals or flip flops, you’ll probably be most comfortable in a pair of sneakers or light boots. Strolling through the sand can be quite the balancing act at times, so sturdy footwear will be your best friend. Closed-toe shoes will also ensure you won’t have sand sticking to your toes at all times.

In case you were wondering what to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, it probably goes without saying that stilettos and all high-heeled shoes for that matter are best reserved for a fabulous dinner you’ll surely be attending while in the magical city.

Accessories and other add-ons

There’s quite a few things to carry on a desert safari to elevate your experience. You may have your perfect headgear picked out for your visit to the horse race, but don’t forget to pack a hat for the day in the desert. A suitable hat will offer you much-needed protection from the sun and the winds that can sometimes pick up at a moment’s notice. You can also opt for a scarf that’ll cover both the head and face and shield you from the sand.

Make sure you bring a pair of sunglasses, procure some high-SPF sunscreen, and smack on a generous layer of lip balm. If you want to look like a true desert pro, stock up on some wet wipes to freshen up as needed.

Chilling in the desert

Outfit for any occasion

Your desert safari in Dubai will most likely consist of a number of action-packed activities. When trying to hit the mark with what to wear on a desert safari during the summer and what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, there are some non-negotiables. To make the most of every experience and not miss out on any fun because of a style slip-up, here’s a few tips to keep in mind when assembling your outfit of the day.

Your time in the desert will most likely start with a thrilling dune drive. Although your clothing should be flowy and breathable, something to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, are clothes that are too loose-fitting as they can get caught in things. For the sake of you and your fellow adventurers, don’t wear any sharp or pointy accessories that could injure anyone as your tackling the dunes.

There’s a good chance you’ll be channelling your inner Emirati strolling through the sand on the back of a camel. The dinner and entertainment portion of your adventure will also have you sitting down on the ground, so the dress code for a desert safari in Dubai leaves no room for a short skirt, dress or shorts. Go for stretchy pieces that’ll keep you covered and comfortable throughout the day.

If you’ve decided to treat your thrill-seeking side to an exhilarating dune buggy experience , opting for sporty and not too loose-fitting clothing is the best idea when thinking about how to dress for a desert safari. For the ladies with flowy locks, a hair-tie is a must.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – make sure you bring warm clothes. Especially when faced with a question of what to wear on a desert safari during the winter. There’s nothing worse than having your sumptuous barbeque dinner ruined by shivering in the sand. Once the sun has set, wrap yourself up in a cosy shawl, sweater or hoodie, so the fun can continue without any inconveniencies.

What to Wear in Desert Safari?

First-time visitors in Dubai find themselves in a fix when deciding what to wear in Desert Safari. In this comprehensive guide, we will answer all your queries about the right attire for desert safari .

Thinking of what to wear in Dubai desert safari? Wear what is comfortable and doesn’t get in the way of this adventurous experience. Desert safari would surely get your adrenaline kicking. However, those who have experienced it cited that they could not enjoy it to its full extent due to a lack of proper clothing. Dressing up for the desert safari is no less than skill. If you want to enjoy the desert safari fully, you want to make sure that you are dressed accordingly.

If you are traveling to Dubai , you would surely want to pack up different outfits as the weather gets pretty unpredictable. What you wear on the beach won’t be suitable for a museum and absolutely not for a mosque. When contemplating what to wear to desert safari Dubai, you should know that since it’s a Muslim country, you have to dress modestly. Women, particularly, have to cover their knees and shoulders.

When it comes to the question of how to dress for Dubai desert safari, there is no one perfect answer. How come? Let’s delve a bit deeper.

The Unpredictable Desert Weather.

To perfectly answer how to dress for Dubai desert safari, your clothes should be not only breathable but also adjustable. How so? Well, they should be suitable for both hot and cold temperatures and dust. Lots of it. The afternoons in the desert are sweltering. They can get blazing hot and sunny. And even though deserts are hot all the time, the early morning, evenings, and late nights get cold.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari?

Ideally, you should opt for loose-fitted clothing. Cotton and linen clothing is comfortable, cool, and perfect for an early morning desert safari. A light jacket or a hoodie is ideal for an evening desert safari to continue into the night.

Natural Fiber: It is best to wear clothing made from natural fibers as they are the best for beating the desert heat.

Culturally Sensitive Clothing: When it comes to style, tourists must exhibit a sense of cultural sensitivity when deciding what to wear in desert safari during summer. They must dress modestly while being dressed for the weather. Put cultural sensitivity and modesty before fashion.

Dressing Styles: Since meals are eaten on the floor, it is best to avoid long fitted dresses and short skirts. A better option would be to wear loose cotton trousers or culottes and shirts. This answers what to wear to desert safari Dubai for summers. And when it’s winter, jeans and leggings are acceptable. Keep a light shawl and sweater/jacket with you as well. Ladies should don shirts that are at least mid-thigh length.

Important Note:  When taking the desert sports or dune bashing, women should wear a sports bra or something more structured. Keep something soft to wrap around your face and head to protect from dust and sand while camel riding and quad biking.

Shoes: If you have not been to Dubai, what to wear in Desert Safari is quite the question as one has to bear numerous things in mind. However, it is not only clothes you should think about. The right shoes and accessories are equally important. It would be best to pack two sets of shoes. Closed-toe trainers, sneakers or light boots are best for desert motorsports and sandboarding. They would keep your feet warm at the camp at night.

Keep a spare pair of flip-flops or sandals for other activities around the desert camp.

Accessories: Whether it’s winter or summer, the UAE sun is strong. Invest in a pair of quality sunglasses. If not, keep a hat with you or a light shawl to save your face and eyes from direct sunlight. Another must-have is sunscreen. It is best to protect yourself against sunburns.

However, while selecting sunscreen, make sure it is not too greasy or heavily scented. A lip balm will protect your lips from cracking as the desert is both dry and dusty.

How to Dress for Dubai Desert Safari Activities?

Since Dubai desert safari has a lot of activities, here is a list of what to wear to desert safari Dubai according to different activities:

Camel Riding When it comes to camel riding, know that it is not the most sophisticated of rides. It is even scary for some. So, it’s better to wear loose trousers or culottes over skirts.

Dune Bashing The 4×4 that will pick you up from the city would take you to the camp from the rugged dune entry. Bear in mind that will be a bumpy ride. Expect to be thrown around. You have to ensure that you are wearing the right attire.

Quad Biking Although an optional sports activity, it is best to be prepared in case you decide to go for it. Some camps have restrictions on wearing closed-toe footwear only. It is best to keep a set of sportswear and something to tie back long hair. This goes for both the genders.

Sandboarding Although a given, sandboarding comes with a great amount of sand. Wear closed-toe footwear with trousers. Ditch the shorts or skirts.

BBQ & Entertainment for the Night The evening camps end the day with a meal that is served on rugs placed on the floor. Think of what would be most comfortable for sitting on the ground, and wear that.

That’s it for how to dress for Dubai desert safari. Hope you found this guide helpful!

The Ultimate Desert Safari Outfit Guide

If you’re planning a desert safari adventure, you’re in for an experience of a lifetime. The desert offers incredible landscapes, thrilling activities, and unique wildlife encounters. To make the most of your journey, you need to be prepared, especially when it comes to your outfit. The right desert safari outfit can significantly enhance your comfort and enjoyment. Let’s explore how to dress for a desert safari, ensuring you have an unforgettable experience.

The Importance of Desert-Appropriate Clothing

Before we delve into the specifics, it’s crucial to understand why desert-appropriate clothing is essential. Deserts are known for their extreme temperatures, harsh sunlight, and occasional sandstorms. Dressing right not only keeps you comfortable but also protects you from these challenging conditions.

Fabric Choice Matters

In the desert, the right fabric can make all the difference. Opt for lightweight, breathable materials like cotton and linen. These fabrics keep you cool and allow your skin to breathe. Avoid heavy or dark-colored fabrics, as they can trap heat.

Cover Up for Sun Protection

While the desert sun is inviting, it can also be unforgiving. To protect yourself from harmful UV rays, choose clothing with long sleeves and long pants. These will cover your skin and reduce sunburn risk.

Practical Footwear is a Must

Walking on desert terrain requires comfortable and practical footwear. Closed-toe shoes, such as hiking boots or sneakers, offer protection from sand and rocks. Make sure they provide good traction for desert adventures.

Layer for Temperature Fluctuations

Desert temperatures can fluctuate drastically between day and night. Layering is the key to staying comfortable. Bring a light sweater or jacket to add warmth when the sun sets.

Accessorize with a Wide-Brimmed Hat and Sunglasses

Accessorize your desert outfit with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. These items provide additional sun protection for your head, face, and eyes.

Choose Earthy Tones

When selecting your desert wardrobe, opt for earthy, neutral tones. These colors help you blend in with the surroundings and reflect sunlight, keeping you cooler.

Pack Light and Smart

For your desert safari, pack light. Essential items include your outfit, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.

The Versatility of a Scarf

A versatile addition to your desert attire is a scarf. It can protect your face from blowing sand and offer extra warmth when needed.

A Word on Hydration and Sunscreen

Staying hydrated is crucial in the desert. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly. Additionally, apply sunscreen with a high SPF rating to shield your skin from the intense sun.

Dress Respectfully

Lastly, remember to dress respectfully if you plan to visit any local communities. In some desert regions, dressing modestly is a sign of respect for the local culture.

Your desert safari outfit plays a significant role in your overall experience. By choosing the right clothing and accessories, you can stay comfortable, safe, and stylish throughout your adventure. So, gear up, follow this outfit guide, and get ready for an incredible desert safari tour .

The African Desert Safari🌵

If you are craving the stark, dramatic landscapes of a desert safari, here are some countries that offer such experiences:

  • Namibia : This is the go-to for desert safaris. The Namib Desert, home to the iconic Sossusvlei dunes, offers a surreal, Mars-like landscape. It’s a photographer’s dream!
  • Botswana : The Kalahari Desert covers a significant portion of Botswana, offering a unique desert safari experience, especially in the dry season.
  • South Africa : The Karoo and Kalahari regions offer a desert-like environment, though not as extreme as Namibia’s landscapes.
  • Kenya : Northern Kenya has arid regions like the Chalbi Desert, but these are less commonly included in typical safari itineraries.
  • Ethiopia : The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, lowest, and driest places on Earth, offering a desert-like experience that’s out of this world.
  • Zimbabwe : While not a desert in the strictest sense, regions like Hwange National Park can offer a semi-arid safari experience.

Desert - What to wear on an African Safari on SelfishMe Travel blog post

Why it matters what you wear:

The desert presents unique challenges with its extreme weather conditions—scorching hot days and chilly nights. Dressing appropriately will help you stay comfortable and safe in this harsh environment.

The essentials:

Lightweight and breathable fabrics are key in the desert. Look for quick-dry clothing which also allows your skin to breathe and keep you cool. It’s also important to protect your skin from the sun, so pack a wide-brimmed hat , sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Don’t forget:

In the desert, it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it often. You may also want to pack a scarf or bandana to protect your face and neck from the sun and sand.

Pack a hydration pack or utility belt to keep your water and other essentials close at hand. You may also want to consider packing a sun umbrella to provide extra shade on hot days.

The African Jungle Safari🌴

When it comes to “jungle” safaris, the term generally refers to tropical rainforests rather than the actual savannas commonly associated with African safaris. Here are regions within some of these countries that offer a more jungle-like experience:

  • Uganda : Known for its lush landscapes, Uganda offers jungle safaris in places like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you can go gorilla trekking.
  • Madagascar : This island nation is more of a tropical paradise with rainforests, making it a jungle safari destination. Andasibe and other national parks offer a unique jungle experience.
  • Ethiopia : While not a jungle in the traditional sense, the Simien Mountains offer a different kind of green, rugged terrain that’s rich in wildlife.
  • Tanzania : The Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks offer jungle-like environments, primarily known for chimpanzee trekking.
  • Zambia : Parts of Zambia, like the Lower Zambezi, offer lush landscapes that could be considered more jungle-like, especially during the green season.

Forest Trekking - What to wear on an African Safari on SelfishMe Travel blog post

The jungle is a humid and unpredictable environment, so it’s important to dress in a way that will keep you comfortable and dry. You’ll also need to protect yourself from insects and other hazards.

Quick-dry clothing is a must in the jungle. Look for fabrics like polyester and nylon, which wick away moisture and dry quickly. You’ll also need a pair of waterproof boots to keep your feet dry in the rain and mud. And don’t forget to pack bug repellent!

Pack a rain poncho or jacket in case of unexpected showers. A wide-brimmed hat is also a good idea to protect you from the sun and rain.

Pack a pair of zip-off pants or roll-up pants so you can convert them to shorts or capris if needed. Multi-use gear is also a good idea, such as a scarf that can be used as a head covering or a neck wrap.

The African Savanna Safari🌾

The classic savanna safari—a timeless experience that never loses its charm! Here’s where you can find those iconic, sweeping grasslands:

  • Kenya : The Maasai Mara is the epitome of a savanna safari, complete with the Great Migration if you time it right.
  • Tanzania : The Serengeti is another iconic savanna landscape, and it’s part of the same ecosystem as the Maasai Mara.
  • South Africa : Kruger National Park offers a mix of savanna, woodland, and bush, providing a well-rounded safari experience.
  • Botswana : The Okavango Delta is a unique wetland in the middle of the Kalahari savanna, offering a different kind of savanna experience.
  • Namibia : Etosha National Park has its own kind of savanna—more arid but still teeming with wildlife.
  • Zimbabwe : Hwange National Park is primarily a mix of woodland and savanna, offering a classic safari experience.
  • Zambia : South Luangwa National Park offers a mix of savanna and woodland, making for a diverse safari experience.
  • Uganda : While known for its jungles, Uganda also has savanna regions like Queen Elizabeth National Park.
  • Madagascar : While not a traditional savanna, the central highlands offer a unique kind of grassland experience.
  • Ethiopia : The lower Omo Valley offers a type of savanna landscape, although it’s not the primary draw for most visitors to Ethiopia.

What to wear on an African Safari on SelfishMe Travel blog post

The savanna is a diverse environment with a variety of weather conditions, so it’s important to pack clothes that are both versatile and comfortable. You’ll also need to dress in a way that won’t disturb the wildlife.

Layer your clothing so you can adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. Pack sturdy and breathable footwear , as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your wildlife viewing experience. And don’t forget to pack sunscreen!

Pack a multi-pocket vest to store your essentials, such as sunscreen and binoculars . UV-protective clothing is also a good idea, as it offers an extra layer of protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Colors for every occasion:

Choose neutral colors (shades of khaki, brown, beige/tan, and green) that won’t startle the animals.

What NOT to wear on an African safari, ever:

  • Avoid wearing white as it stands out more than any other color.
  • Avoid dark colors since they also stand out in the bush but these colors also attract tsetse flies.
  • Avoid patterns as these can startle the animals.
  • Avoid wearing camoflauge. In some countries, wearing camoflauge is a no-no; you could be mistaken for someone in the military, possibly targeted, detained, or fined.

Female Desert Safari Outfit | Men & Women

If you’re planning to participate in a desert safari in Dubai or another desert destination, you might be wondering what to wear. As a general rule, it’s important to dress comfortably and appropriately for the desert environment, while also respecting local customs and traditions.

For women, the best desert safari outfits are typically loose, lightweight, and made of natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. This type of clothing is comfortable to wear in hot and dry conditions, and will help you stay cool and avoid sweating.

Here are some specific tips for selecting female desert safari outfits:

  • Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing: Choose loose, flowing garments that allow for plenty of ventilation and movement.
  • Opt for natural fabrics: Cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics are breathable and will help you stay cool and comfortable in the desert heat. Avoid synthetic materials like polyester, which can trap heat and moisture.
  • Cover your skin: Although it’s hot in the desert , it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Wear long sleeves, pants, or a long skirt to cover your arms and legs, and consider wearing a hat or scarf to protect your head and face.
  • Choose comfortable shoes: Closed-toe shoes are recommended for desert safari activities, as they will protect your feet from sand and debris. Avoid high heels or flip-flops, which may be difficult to walk in on sand.
  • Respect local customs: If you’ll be visiting a desert region with a strong cultural tradition, it’s important to dress modestly and respect local customs. For example, in some Muslim countries, it’s considered respectful for women to cover their hair and avoid revealing clothing.

Overall, the key to dressing for a desert safari is to be comfortable, practical, and respectful of local customs and traditions. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your desert adventure and make the most of your experience.

Thinking about what to wear on a desert safari in Dubai? Wear something that is both comfortable and won't interfere with this exciting experience. A desert safari will undoubtedly greatly boost your adrenaline. Those who have experienced it, however, have stated that they were unable to fully enjoy it due to a lack of appropriate clothing. Dressing up for a desert safari requires experience. If you want to fully enjoy the desert safari, make sure you are appropriately dressed.

If you are visiting Dubai, you should pack a variety of outfits because the weather can be unpredictable. What you wear to the beach will not be appropriate for a museum or a mosque. Remember that you must dress modestly because Dubai is a Muslim country when choosing what to wear on a desert safari there. Women, in particular, are required to cover their knees and shoulders.

The perfect dress code for a Dubai desert safari

Based on extensive research and tourist feedback, here are some simple guidelines to follow when deciding what to wear on a desert safari for a comfortable and safe experience.

  • Lightweight fabrics are best to wear in the desert because it can get quite hot during the day. Breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen, are preferable to synthetics.
  • Because the temperature can drop quickly in the evening, bring a jumper or jacket.
  • To protect you from the sun and any potential desert animals, put on long sleeves and trousers.
  • Shorts or trousers that reach at least the mid-thigh should be worn. Shorts that expose your bottom are frowned upon by the locals.
  • It is best for ladies to avoid outfits that expose too much cleavage. Sleeveless tops are acceptable as long as they are not overly revealing.
  • Meals are commonly eaten on the floor, which can be uncomfortable, especially in the breeze, so short skirts should be avoided.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required because you will be walking a lot.
  • You can keep your head cool by wearing a hat or scarf.
  • To protect your skin and eyes, don't forget to bring sunscreen and sunglasses.

Do different seasons require different desert dress?

Desert safari clothing in winter.

Winter is the ideal time to go on a desert safari. From November to February, the weather tends to be cooler, especially in the desert after sunset and until early morning. Dress in layers so that you can easily remove your outer layers once the sun comes out. Long jeans paired with cardigans or jumpers are ideal. To protect yourself from the cool breeze, bring a snug-fitting hat with ear flaps or earmuffs. It is recommended to wear a scarf or pashmina shawl. Lip balms and moisturizing creams can help prevent dry skin.

Desert Safari Clothing in spring

The weather is pleasant and comfortable from March to May. Layered clothing can be avoided during these months, and casual clothing can be worn. Carry a jacket because temperatures drop at night.

Desert Safari Clothing in summer

It gets hot and humid starting in April and continues through September. The secret to surviving the summer in Dubai is to wear clothing that is lightweight and breathable. Despite the possibility of a slight drop in temperature at night, it is recommended to wear loose clothing. Cotton t-shirts and pants can be substituted for tights, bombers, and sweatshirts. Moreover, especially during these months, do not forget the sunscreen.

Desert Safari Clothing in Autumn

The heat tends to decrease from late September to early November, but it is still best to wear light clothing until winter arrives.

Different dress Code for different desert Activities in Dubai

Desert Safari is a one-of-a-kind experience that allows you to explore the desert landscape while learning about the traditional way of life in the UAE.

The safari usually starts with a pick-up from your hotel in a 4x4 vehicle, followed by an exciting drive into the desert. Once at the camp, you can go sandboarding, ride a camel, or simply relax and watch the sunset. Following a delicious barbecue dinner under the stars, there will be traditional entertainment such as belly dancing and henna painting. Dressing appropriately for all activities makes it easier to have a good time.

The rocky sand ride is not for the faint of heart. Skirts, Sarees, and other free-flowing clothing should be avoided to handle the tussle of the ride safely. Spikes and pointy details on clothing and accessories should be avoided for the safety of yourself and others in the vehicle.

Camel Riding

Riding a camel is a good time and a chance to relive the desert scenery from movies. However, it might not always be a relaxing experience, especially if it's your first time riding a camel. Select shorts over skirts and trousers over dresses. Make sure the clothing is not made of coarse materials or has no sharp edges because they could cause injury.

Sandboarding

When it comes to enjoying the sand comfortably, comfortable footwear is extremely important. To prevent sand from getting between your toes and forming a gritty base, wear closed-toed shoes. Once more, shorts over skirts and loose-fitting attire are recommended for better traction when sandboarding.

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

BBQ Dinners are typically served on floor rugs. As a result, wearing clothes that are comfortable while sitting on the floor is ideal. While everyone is seated, the Tanoura show and belly dancing take place. Short skirts should be avoided. Carrying extra tops is recommended so you can change into a fresh pair after your day's activities. While sitting, you can wear sandals or flip-flops.

Accessories for your Desert Safari

  • Protect your eyes from the sun's rays by wearing sunglasses.
  • A sand-proof bag to keep all of your devices in.
  • Hats for sun protection
  • Binoculars can be useful for spotting wildlife.
  • Plenty of sunscreen for the desert's UV rays (minimum SPF 50).
  • Deodorants and antiperspirant wipes to keep you fresh during the safari.
  • A large backpack to hold all of your belongings.
  • A strong waist bag that stays in place to store tissues, phones, and other items.

Footwear for your Desert Safari

When planning a desert safari, it is essential to select the appropriate footwear. You don't want to end up with blisters or, worse, injured feet. While there are many different types of shoes available, not all of them are appropriate for walking in sandy, often uneven terrain. The key is to find shoes that keep your feet cool while also protecting them from hot sand and sharp rocks.

To protect your feet from scorpions and other desert animals, you must wear closed-toed footwear. A good pair of desert boots with a sturdy sole and breathable material can offer traction on loose sand. You should also select lightweight desert boots that are comfortable because you'll probably be walking a lot during your safari. For keeping your feet cool, sandals or light hiking shoes are a good option, but make sure they have a good grip to prevent slipping. Wear sturdy shoes if you intend to ride a camel, and if you do, be sure to do so.

You can fully appreciate your desert safari experience if you wear the appropriate footwear.

What not to wear on a Desert Safari?

A desert safari is an excellent way to experience Dubai's diverse landscapes, which range from towering dunes to endless stretches of empty coastline. However, there are a few things to avoid entirely when thinking about what to wear on a desert safari :

  • Tight, form-fitting attire
  • Dark colors or heavy fabrics that absorb sunlight.
  • Loose-fitting clothing, as it may get caught on something or blown around in the wind.

A desert safari in Dubai can be an incredible experience, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you have the best time possible. To begin, dress comfortably and in clothing that will not become too hot in the desert sun. Second, be mindful of the sand and how it can get everywhere; it is best to leave valuables at home. Finally, in the desert, simple accessories are best because too much detail can get lost in the sand.

What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari

Balancing cultural sensitivity with practicality; how to prepare for your first Dubai desert safari

Got your Dubai tour tickets booked? Waiting for your pick-up driver for your first Dubai desert experience then suddenly realised you’ve got absolutely no idea what to wear?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

What to wear in Dubai

Dressing for Dubai can be a prickly subject; on the one hand, the headline dress code advice is to always dress with modesty, you’re going to a Muslim country.

Then, on the other hand, your Instagram feed is full of half-dressed models showing off in the sun. Add in conflicting travel forum advice about what is and isn’t appropriate in different situations. It IS confusing!!

We try and tackle as many of these different scenarios as possible in our “ what to wear in Dubai ” guide over here. However, the important thing to note is you are likely going to want a few different outfits when packing for Dubai!

Even on a short stopover, you could change outfits half a dozen times; what may be practical and appropriate for the beach , most certainly isn’t for a museum or a mosque . A Dubai Desert Safari brings a whole new set of wardrobe dilemmas!

As the desert safari is one of the most popular activities to try when you’re visiting Dubai. We’re going to take a deep dive into exactly what you should expect, what you’ll be doing on a desert safari, and therefore, how to dress appropriately.

Take all this advice with a grain of salt and do whatever feels right for YOU and your situation. Just keep modesty and cultural sensitivity in mind, ahead of fashion.

What should I consider when dressing for the desert in Dubai?

Dressing for the weather.

Even a short distance from the skyscrapers the temperature changes. In winter this change can be as much as 10 degrees celsius cooler once you’re away from the city. Whilst you may have been in bathers at the beach during the day, a nighttime desert safari in Dubai you’ll want long jeans and a pullover or cardigan.

It’s very unlikely it will rain or you’ll need a thicker down coat, a light, long sleeve top should be fine.

Conversely, in summer it’s hot. Sometimes there just aren’t enough superlatives to describe hot to the first-timer!

You will want to consider breathable materials that work well with profuse sweating; think cotton, linen, and rayon material. Accept whatever you are wearing will sweat through even if you are not normally a heavy perspirer!

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Your desert safari is likely to include a variety of activities from sedate to adrenaline pumping! Think about scenarios such as:

  • Dune Bashing – the 4×4 that picks you up from the city will no doubt choose the rugged dune entry to the camp in order to impress! Ladies particularly you may want to consider you’re well supported as you will get thrown around in the car (NB not recommend for under 5’s, pregnant ladies or those with back, heart conditions etc)
  • Camel Riding – almost a must for your first desert experience so do thing practically how you will ride. Camel riding is not the most elegant of activities so definitely consider shorts and trousers over skirts, and hold on to any lose items!
  • Sand boarding – the thrill of hitting the dunes comes with a lot of sand! Think practically about proper closed toe footwear and where that sand will end up when you inevitably come crashing down! Trousers are a recommendation over skirts or shorts.
  • Quad Biking/Fat Tire Bikes – these are normally optional extra desert sports. Some camps may have strict rules that only closed toe footwear can be worn. Again, when you’re straddling something a short skirt is impratical. You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.
  • BBQ Dinner & Entertainment – your evening camps will end on a meal most likely taken seated on rugs on the floor. Think practically how you will comfortably sit on the ground, and the evening may be finished with a little light dancing. If you’ve partaken in a desert sport beforehand, you may want a fresh shirt with you and a litte something to freshen up (antipersperient) before you dine.

We cover more on the exact activities you can participate in on a Dubai desert safari here .

Dressing for Cultural Sensitivity

It’s important for tourists to remain culturally sensitive when they’re visiting the UAE, but also dress for the weather. There’s a balance that can be easily struck when preparing for a trip to Dubai between being culturally sensitive and practical – none more so than when you’re on a desert safari.

The Dubai dress code does not require women to be fully covered at all times. Nor is the wearing of shorts forbidden. As a very standard rule of thumb, men and women should be looking to be covering their shoulders and knees, but there’s flexibility in this.

Dubai Desert Safari Dresscode

So summing it all up from this advice, what you actually wear is whatever will make you feel most comfortable. Rather than a packing list, these are our top tips.

  • Wear loose clothing made from natural fibers to best deal with the sand and heat. Think materials such as cotton, linen and rayon, which work well in the heat.
  • Ladies should avoid short skirts as they are not very practical and meals are often eaten on the floor.
  • Culottes and loose cotton trousers or shirts are better than clingy clothing in summer. In winter, jeans or leggings will be fine, but suggested you wear a shirt covering your bottom.
  • Shorts above your knees are OK, but avoid your shorty shorts with your bottom clearly visible, try to keep to at least mid-thigh length.
  • A sleeveless shirt or tank top may be OK in some situations, but overtly tight, clingy clothes that show excessive cleavage and leave nothing to the imagination are definitely NOT OK.
  • Ladies may want a sports bra or something more structured if taking on desert sports and dune bashing.
  • You may want two sets of shoes with you; closed-toe trainers for sandboarding and any desert motorsports, plus a spare pair of flip flops for other activities and around the desert camp.
  • Something to wrap around your head and face to protect you from the sand and dust – especially during quad biking and camel riding.
  • A sweater or a cardigan if visiting in the coolest months of winter.

And what to pack on a Dubai desert safari other than clothing

Your tour will most likely take care of food and water but we recommend you also pack:

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if any portion of your trip is during the day.
  • Sanitizer for before eating and after touching camels.
  • Take tissues and wet wipes especially if you’re travelling with children.
  • Anti-persperiant wipes in the peak of summer, or a hanky, sweat towel of some sort.
  • You may find coating everyone’s legs in a talc/beach powder before you go helpful for reducing some (never all!) of the sand.
  • Extra cash if you will be partaking in add on activities not included in your general tour (eg fat bikes, quad biking, dune buggies may be paid extras)
  • A spare battery pack for your phone/camera – you’ll be taking a lot of photos!
  • A sand proof bag to keep all this gear in
  • Leave your accessories and other valuables in the hotel safe – losing a favourite watch or earring in the sand, we promise you, it will be almost impossible to find again.

Safari Outfits Ideas

Whether you’re going to the Australian outback, the Sahara desert, or to your sister-in-law’s themed party, knowing a few solid safari outfit ideas can only benefit you.

So, in this article, I’m going to teach you how to put together some safari outfits—that way you’ll look less like a tourist and more like a tour guide.

What Makes Up A Safari Outfit?

Safari Outfits Ideas

Safari outfit ideas are largely based on the climate that you’ll be exploring. Since most safaris take place in extremely warm or humid locations, you’ll want to consider wearing khaki items .

That’s because the material doesn’t attract too much sunlight so it won’t make you overheat.

Other pieces you may want to include in your safari outfit ideas are:

  • Pith helmets
  • Safari boots
  • Safari hats
  • Bush jackets
  • Khaki shorts

History Of Safaris

Safari Outfits Ideas

Before I tell give you more safari outfit ideas, let’s learn about the history of safaris.

The first documented safari, or what we would call a safari, was in 1836 . William Cornwallis Harris, an English hunter, began the practice as a way to observe flora, fauna, and animals from a peaceful distance.

The goal was not to interact with the wildlife (shocking, given Harris’ hunting proficiency) but to study it.

Harris’ methodology involved getting up early, lots of movement throughout the day to see as many of the animals as possible, and a nightly dinner to review everything he and his fellow safari men saw that day.

This format is still used today but it’s far from the only one. For example, Newland & Tarlton Ltd. invented luxury tented safaris , which is another variation that’s safer for the participants while costing them much more.

What Are Some Popular Safari Outfit Ideas?

Safari Outfits Ideas

Safari outfit ideas tend to be pretty similar since they usually consist of a combination of athletic wear and relaxed-fitting khaki clothing.

You’ll often find that the outfits are pretty uniform when it comes to color because they’re built to repel sunlight . This is the case whether you’re looking for safari outfit men’s looks or safari outfit women’s styles.

Safari Outfits Ideas

My first safari outfit idea involves probably the darkest colors I’d recommend wearing if you’re going on an actual safari. However, if you want a safari-theme outfit for a party then this is a great look.

It has everything you could want in a safari outfit—the baggy fits, earthy tones, and relaxed materials. However, the ensemble has a distinctive fashionista’s flair.

Safari Outfits Ideas

This is a much more conventional safari guide outfit that’d actually serve you well in the field. I adore the one-piece that retains its shape thanks to the belt. However, this look is all about the accessories.

Of course, you’ll want your accessories to be functional when you’re on a safari expedition because you don’t want to lug around unnecessary weight.

So keep that in mind when thinking about safari outfit ideas. This outfit shows how you can add a few personal touches to your fit without ruining your mobility.

The hat and sunglasses are both essential as you’ll be out in the sun for long periods of time. They’ll protect you from UV rays that could harm your skin and tire you out.

Yet it’s the bag that I’m most impressed by because it’s a stylish way to carry everything you need in a format that’s different than a backpack.

Fashion Tips To Avoid With Safari Outfits

Safari Outfits Ideas

Here are the things you’ll want to avoid when putting together your safari outfit ideas.

  • Don’t wear accessories unless you need them to survive. Of course, I’m being a bit melodramatic, but safaris aren’t the place for heavy jewelry or dangly earrings.
  • Stay away from black as it’ll attract too much sunlight and you’ll likely overheat .
  • Don’t wear slip-on shoes , high heels, or other footwear that doesn’t fit most safari outfit ideas’ standard aesthetic.

Best Places To Buy Safari Outfits

Safari Outfits Ideas

Some of my favorite places to purchase safari outfit ideas include:

  • Banana Republic
  • Eddie Bauer

Final Thoughts

Safari Outfits Ideas

Assembling a few great safari outfit ideas can be fun once you learn the fundamentals . It’s all a matter of toying around with lighter colors and breathable textiles.

And with enough practice, you might end up looking like a grown-up Dora the Explorer, and I mean that as a compliment.

Female Desert Safari Outfit –  What to Wear in Desert Safari Dubai?

Female Desert Safari Outfit for winter

Originally posted 2022-04-03 20:46:13.

So you’re getting ready for a desert tour and not sure what to wear on the desert safari tour? Though Dubai is significantly tolerant about female outfits, in spite it’s a part of Muslim country and also have some restrictions when it comes to outside.   Regarding temperature, during the day time in the hot season (May-October), temperature in Dubai desert fluctuates between 35 C to 50 C while in summer it keeps rolling around 25 C. On the other hand, at night the climate in the desert becomes a bit chilly. Apart from that, desert safari tours are offered in three different versions, morning, an evening desert safari tour and overnight desert safari. Most likely you’ve booked an evening desert tour. So, the major part of this post is about the evening safari tour. Before going on a trip, go through my detailed post to figure out desert safari outfits.

Dubai Desert Outfit During Winter

Considering it as a desert city, most people think Dubai is ALWAYS hot. Frankly, it isn’t accurate. During the winter season, the temperature in Dubai is usually pleasant. In fact in recent years, during winter rain has happened in Dubai. Therefore, you’ve to keep an eye out for weather if you go to the Dubai desert in winter.  Occasionally, when you are travelling to the Dubai desert in the evening during winter months, you should definitely wear an extended pants/long skirt and also it’s advisable to carry a light jacket since the desert temperature in the evening after sunset goes down.

Female Desert Safari Outfit for winter

Dubai Desert Outfit During Summer

Despite sweltering weather conditions, a great number of tourists are visiting Dubai. When choosing a dress for desert safari in summer, Don’t forget that summer months in Dubai are scorching. To guide you, I’d suggest wearing a simple cotton shirt combined with breathable cargo pants etc. Even though dark colorful dresses seem to be a good choice for the pictures, to beat the heat, light-colored clothing is most appropriate to wear.If you want to miss spectacular desert photos, wearing outfits with a vibrant pattern or shade to contrast against the sandy background could help you in capturing great photos. On top of that, To protect your face against sun rays, you can carry a baseball cap with you.

If you’re going to overnight desert safari, bear in mind temperature can dramatically change from evening to late night. So ensure to carry a light jacket or fleece.

If a man accompanies you, he should wear shorts or light and comfortable trousers or jeans with a t-shirt or cotton shirt.

Dressing for Cultural

First, I want to point out that Dubai is known as a multicultural city because it’s population is composed of over 85% expats including the Pakistani, Indian subcontinent, African, Southeast region, West and Middle East. However, When selecting what to wear on a desert trip, aside from your ease and comfort zone, you need to respect the local UAE culture as well. Considering other Middle Eastern cities, Dubai is extremely generous when it comes to female dress code, yet, it’s advisable to dress conservatively, covering your shoulders and knees at least. Casual pencil dress with a belt would be an ideal dress to wear in Dubai.

What Shoes Should You Wear?

Putting on walking sandals may not be a great idea when going on a desert trip in Dubai. Better you carry close-toed shoes with you for walking in the desert sand. In winter, Light joggers and sneakers are also great options for desert adventure activities.

Additional Desert Safari Packing

  • Getting sunburned in the Dubai desert is not fun in any way. So ensure to carry a good sunscreen lotion and glasses as well.
  • If you’re staying overnight in the desert, make sure you carry your mobile phone chargers. Aside if you’re kind of allergic, carry your own towels and travel soap as well. You can also bring your own night dress. Remember, at night the temperature drops down in the desert. So, carry a warm dress

Evening Desert Safari Activities

Evening Dubai desert safari trip comes with a diverse variety of activities for its visitors. If you have no idea what those activities are, stick with me.

  • Dune Bashing

When it comes to dune bashing in desert safari, there is no way you miss it unless you’re pregnant or have backbone issues. Dune bashing is actually the zaniest and the most daring activity in desert safari where a vehicle is driven over a sand dune with escalating and reducing speeds. To do so, you need special driving skills along with a special vehicle. Normally a sports utility vehicle (SUV) used to carry out dune bashing. It’s not a necessity, but if you’re a female, consider being dressed in a  well supported shirt since you’ll get thrown around in the car.

  • Camel Riding

Riding on a camel in the desert is a dream for many of us. It’s evidently an exciting activity for many tourists. If you’ve no idea what to wear when going for the camel ride, In my opinion, loose, long sleeves clothes and non-slip loose trousers/pants would be good outfitted for camel rides. If you’re taking the came riding trip in Dubai during the summer, light-weight and light-coloured clothing would be the right ones.

  • Sand boarding

It might be a completely new term in case you have never been on a desert safari trip before. Similar to snowboarding, Sandboarding is an activity that involves slipping down the slopes of a desert dune with exclusively designed boards fastened to your feet. Again, for this you are also suggested to wear loose trousers.

  • BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

Aside from previously mentioned activities, you’ll also enjoy barbecue dinners under the stars, watch live entertainment shows like tanoura show, belly dance and fireshow etc during evening and overnight desert safari trips.

  •  Photography

No matter which desert safari trip you’re going with, you’ll have an opportunity to get some amazing photoshoots with falcons. Most desert safari tour operators offer UAE national dress for photoshoot. If it attracts you, you can give it a try.

  • Quad Biking

Most of the time, quad biking isn’t included in desert safari  basic trips. It’s an optional activity. Quad bike riding in the Dubai desert is truly an activity packed with adventure and excitement. If you wish to experience a full scale desert safari trip with full scale,  I encourage you to book quad biking with your desert safari Dubai tour.

Where to Book Desert Safari?

Since desert safari is considered to be a must to do activity in Dubai, there are countless tour operators that offer desert safari tours. However, I personally went with this tour operator . You can read my detailed  desert safari trip review over here .

Desert Safari Outfit: Ultimate Guide

Desert Safari Outfit

Embarking on a desert safari is a mesmerizing adventure, a chance to witness the breathtaking landscapes and majestic silhouettes of dunes stretching to the horizon. Yet, in the arid expanse, the sartorial question arises: What is the most suitable attire for such an expedition? In this comprehensive guide, we’ll navigate the nuances of desert style from a fashion-forward, functional, and cultural perspective, ensuring that your desert safari outfit not only safeguards you against the elements but also enhances your experience in the most stylish manner possible.

Understanding the Desert Environment for Desert Safari Outfit

Before you pack your bags and set out for the desert, a vital step is comprehending this natural habitat’s unique climate and conditions. From the Sahara’s undulating sands to the Atacama’s remote corners, each desert imparts its challenges and charms. However, certain dressing principles remain constant in mitigating the desert’s challenges while celebrating its ambiance.

Climate and Weather Conditions

Desert temperatures can fluctuate dramatically, with searing heat during the day and cooler evenings. Lightweight layers are essential to adapt to these changes seamlessly. The days

can reach blistering highs, often above 100°F (37.7°C), demanding breathable fabrics that allow the skin to sweat naturally and cool.

Considerations for Comfort and Protection

Besides UV radiation, deserts also expose one to fine particles of dust and sand, which can irritate the eyes, nose, and skin. Clothing options should protect against the sun and guard against abrasion from the elements.

Desert Safari Outfit

Essential Desert Safari Outfit

The backbone of your desert attire will consist of garments that shield you from the sun and the effects of the elements.

Lightweight and Breathable Fabrics

Opt for garments made from natural materials like cotton and linen or advanced synthetic fabrics engineered for ventilation. These materials wick moisture away from your body, keeping you cool and dry in the desert’s relentless heat.

Long Sleeves and Pants for Sun Protection

While covering up in scorching conditions may seem counterintuitive, full-coverage clothing is the most effective barrier against the sun. Look for long-sleeved shirts and pants that offer a UPF rating, which ensures that UV rays are effectively

Headgear Options for Sun and Sand Protection

A hat is an indispensable part of your desert wardrobe — a broad-brimmed one that shades your face, neck, and ears. These hats reduce the risk of sunburn and minimize sand accumulation in your hair. For more intense conditions, consider a keffiyeh or shemagh, a traditional Arab headdress that can be wrapped around the face and head for added protection.

Footwear Suitable for Sand and Walking

Sturdy closed-toe shoes that can withstand the terrain are a must for desert safaris. Boots or trail shoes offer protection against the heat of the sand and any possible sharp objects

hidden beneath it. They also provide ankle support, which can be crucial in navigating uneven landscapes.

Desert Safari Outfit: Accessories and Essentials

A successful desert safari outfit is as much about the little details as the major components. Don’t overlook the importance of these supportive accessories.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Eyes need protection, too, and polarized sunglasses are the best defense against the desert’s relentless glare. Pair them with a high-SPF sunscreen for comprehensive skin care. Don’t forget to reapply regularly, as sweating can gradually remove the protection.

Scarves and Shawls for Additional Protection

In dusty deserts, scarves are not just a style statement but a pragmatic safeguard. They shield the nose and mouth from airborne particles and are versatile enough to protect your head or shade your neck. A light shawl can serve similar purposes and doubles as a layer against the cold once the sun sets.

Hydration Packs and Water Bottles

Staying hydrated is non-negotiable in the desert. Hydration packs, with their hands-free drinking tubes, are a convenient choice for ensuring a steady water supply without needing to stop and unpack. Alternatively, multiple water bottles or a travel-friendly Hydrapak in a sturdy backpack will keep you well-supplied.

Snacks and Essentials for the Safari

Keep energy levels up with a stash of nutritious, non-perishable snacks like nuts or energy bars. Additionally, essentials such as a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and a portable charger for electronic devices could prove invaluable on your journey.

Styling Tips for Desert Safari Outfit

While the primary focus is functionality, there’s no reason why your desert safari outfit can’t reflect your style. Here are some tips to help you look good while staying well-prepared.

Balancing Style and Functionality

Choose colors that reflect the sun’s rays and regulate body temperature, such as earthy tones like khaki, beige, and light gray. These hues are also a nod to the desert’s natural palette and assist in staying cooler than dark colors, which absorb heat.

Layering Options for Temperature Changes

A lightweight, long-sleeved shirt that can be rolled up for ventilation allows you to adjust for warmth during the day and protection during cooler evenings. Pair this with a fleece or sweater that can easily be stowed away during the day.

Incorporating Local Fashion and Cultural Elements

For those who appreciate the authenticity of their adventure, consider integrating local fashion cues into your outfit. Traditional Bedouin attire often features flowing garments made for the desert, such as the thobe and the abaya. While not necessary, adopting aspects of local dress can add to the resonance and respect for the culture of the area you’re visiting.

Desert Safari Outfit: Conclusion

A well-considered desert safari outfit provides the ultimate fusion of style and practicality, ensuring you are comfortable and chic as you traverse the golden sands. Remember, the key to desert style is to be prepared for anything— from extreme heat to sudden sandstorms — while expressing your unique flair. So, as you prepare to sally into one of the world’s most starkly beautiful landscapes, let your outfit be a harmonious extension of the adventure that awaits you.

Whether the Serengeti’s plains or the Arabian Peninsula’s dunes beckon you, your desert safari outfit is a critical companion in making the journey memorable and safe. Pack smart, dress sharp, and make every part of your journey through the sands a testament to the harmony between humanity and nature.
