You have lots of options, from the Biosfera Plaza Shopping Center to small shops with souvenirs, typical for most Spanish resorts.

At Biosfera Plaza Shopping Center you will find popular Spanish brands, like Zara, Bershka, Mango etc. Another large shop present in the resort is Fund Grube, ideal for cosmetics and perfumes since they always have some sort of promotion going on.

Pay attention when looking for souvenirs in the small shops, since many of them sell similar products, but the prices vary a lot. You will also find plenty of shops with alcohol and cigarettes at better prices than in the UK, Germany, or the EU in general.

If you're looking for a bigger shopping center with more brands and diversity we would advise you to hop on a bus and go to Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, which is only 20 minutes away from Puerto del Carmen.

Castillo san gabriel arrecife lanzarote

Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and it is very close to Puerto del Carmen. You can get there by car or by bus, but you should know the city center is full of narrow streets and parking is sometimes hard to find.

The capital is not the prettiest city in the Canary Islands, we won't lie to you, but nonetheless, we enjoyed our visit and if you decide to go and see it for yourself we recommend you check out our list of things to do in Arrecife . Don't miss the area of Charco San Gines and also a walk to Castillo San Gabriel.

jetski lanzarote

Enjoy a jet ski activity with amazing views of the volcanic coastline of Lanzarote.

You can choose tours with a duration between 40, 60, or 120 minutes and the price is per jetski, so 2 people can go together.

This jet ski experience is one of the fun activities to try in Puerto del Carmen which is super popular with teenagers and adults alike since it's such a thrilling way of seeing Lanzarote's coastline.

  • Includes Life jackets, Wetsuit, Lockers, Guide
  • Ride a jetski along the coast of Lanzarote

This is a weekly market in Puerto del Carmen in Plaza del Varadero, with various stalls and stands, from food to craft items and even the usual fake bags and watches. It's not as big as Teguise Market , but it's a great way to spend a morning if you are staying in Puerto del Carmen.

walk puerto del carmen to puerto calero

Puerto Calero is just a short distance away from Puerto del Carmen and if you want to admire the beautiful views of the ocean you can walk along the coastline between the two places. The entire walk takes around 1 hour and you should wear comfortable shoes, as the path is sometimes rocky and slippery.

If you are tired and don't want to return on foot, you can opt for the bus or a taxi. In Puerto Calero, you will find a nice marina with some great restaurants and cafes.

  • 25-minute boat trip
  • Multiple daily departures
  • There a bar onboard (drinks not included in ticket price)

submarine lanzarote puerto del carmen

How about a dive to see the amazing marine life off the coast of Lanzarote?

You'll find this yellow submarine in Puerto Calero, which is easily accessible from Puerto del Carmen, as we've already explained before.

This is a favorite activity for the kids, but it's a nice experience for adults as well, especially if you're not a diver but you still want to see the ocean floor and fishes.

  • Duration 1 hour
  • Experience a 1-hour dive on board a real submarine, taking you 30 meters (100 foot) below the unexplored waters of Lanzarote

Puerto del Carmen is divided between the new area and the old town, but even if you are staying on the new side of town you should come and explore the Old Town Harbour. There are many good restaurants on this side of Puerto del Carmen and in the evenings it's a very lively place, with bars and clubs keeping the party alive until morning hours.

scuba diving lanzarote

What to do in Puerto del Carmen for adventurous holidaymakers: try scuba diving and discover the magic life of the ocean surrounding Lanzarote.

For the first dive, you'll descend to a maximum depth of just 6 metres until you gain confidence to be in the water. When you have completed your dive, you can take a break and have a snack, then you can take your second dive. This time you will dive to a maximum of 12 meters, so you can explore more of the underwater world of Lanzarote.

Depending on what your needs are, Matagorda may be the best fit for you to spend your holidays. You can easily walk from Puerto del Carmen to Matagorda, where there is a large and beautiful beach, ideal for families. In the evenings, it's not as noisy and busy as Puerto del Carmen, which may be what some people are looking for, but you still get good restaurants and bars to eat and have a pint.\

playa papagayo beach lanzarote

If you're looking for the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote, then you needn't look further than Playas de Papagayo . Although located far away from any resort on the island, this collection of beaches are the pride and joy of Lanzarote and they are definitely worth a visit while you're on holiday here.

If you don't have a rental car or you simply don't want to drive all the way there, you can hop on a catamaran cruise, which also includes lunch and unlimited drinks and it's a fun way to see the beaches of Costa de Papagayo while stopping to swim and snorkel along the way.

  • Transfers from and to the nearest pick-up point to your accommodation in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise included

open air cinema puerto del carmen lanzarote

The open-air cinema is a family-friendly activity in Puerto del Carmen and you can opt to have dinner here first, then you get cozy in your seats, while still being able to enjoy drinks and snacks while watching the movie. Blankets are also provided if you get cold and you need to warm up.

This is the only open-air cinema in Lanzarote and it's on the rooftop of Biosfera Shopping Centre.

Since this is a popular resort in Lanzarote, there are lots of events all year round, from the Carnival of Puerto del Carmen in February/March, to the St. Patrick's Day party , the Ironman Lanzarote competition, Holi Lanzarote - the Hindu festival, Santa Parade before Christmas, the festivities for the Three Magic Kings (Los Reyes Magos) in January and many many more. This is a great way to enjoy the Spanish way of life, by participating in the various fiestas and celebrating all the cultures that live here together.

The great thing about Puerto del Carmen is that it's so diverse and there are so many bars and restaurants that you simply can't get bored. From the typical Spanish cuisine, to British food, Mexican, Irish pubs, Polish cuisine, Asian and even Caribbean, there are so many choices that everyone can find something to their taste.

This is the house where Jose Saramago has spent the last 18 years of his life and one can understand why he loved Lanzarote.

The house is open from Monday to Saturday and it's actually located in Tias. You can reach it by public transport using bus lines L-5 + L-19 + L-34 + L-60 and getting down at the Tias Centro stop.

Puerto del Carmen has a great location in Lanzarote, close to the airport and sort of in the middle of the island, which makes it great as a base if you want to explore. Besides the list above of things to do in Puerto del Carmen, you can venture out of town and take an island tour with one of the local companies, or if you have a rental car you can visit on your own.

The most popular day trips from Puerto del Carmen are:

what to do in puerto del carmen lanzarote activities visit

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

1. Enjoy Playa Grande, the main beach

Playa Grande

Playa Grande is definitely one of Lanzarote’s most popular beaches, and the largest in the town center. We love its kilometer-long shoreline of golden sand and its depth, where everyone can find a little space. What’s more, its orientation is perfect for admiring the mountains of southern Lanzarote, the oldest part of the island.

On the beach you’ll find sun loungers, pedal boat and paddle rentals, showers… and anything else you might need. And along the square is the main avenue, with its many restaurants and stores.

2. Dolphin-watching boat trip

trips lanzarote puerto del carmen

Our favorite activity was the dolphin-watching trip . We were very lucky and had a dazzling show! Of course, there’s no guarantee of seeing dolphins or whales, but in any case you’ll enjoy the beautiful views of the island, the pleasure of gliding over the water… And the excitement of looking off into the distance for a glimpse of a fin. And when you find them, it’s unforgettable!

Here’s our favorite tour to see them, in a comfortable boat where everyone has room to watch the dolphins: fast boat during the day – duration 1h30 with swimming: See details and availability

3. Swimming at Playa Chica, our favourite beach

Playa Chica

Playa Chica is our favorite beach in Puerto del Carmen. It’s a charming little cove, 60 m long. It is surrounded by a rocky barrier, creating a natural pool with calm waters. We found the sand very fine and the water quite transparent. She enchanted us. If you like snorkeling, this is also a great choice.

5. Stroll along the Paseo Maritimo

Paseo Maritimo in Puerto del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a long town. And if you like walking with a view of the sea, there’s a magnificent path that runs along the entire coastline and beaches: the Paseo Maritimo. It’s really very pleasant, especially at sunrise. Along the way, in addition to the lovely views, you’ll be able to see some works of art and sculptures such as the Robalo.

6. Rancho Texas: zoo and water park

Rancho Texas - water park

Rancho Texas is a zoological and botanical park with a pool, kayak and waterslide section where you can cool off after admiring all the animals. The water park isn’t very big, but it’s an excellent combination for a great day out (see our comparison of Lanzarote’s water parks ).

wildlife show in Rancho Texas

In this park you’ll see:

  • a classic zoo section
  • animal shows (dolphins, birds, sea lions)
  • a tunnel explaining the island’s geology
  • a dolphin explanation tunnel with immersive museography

7. Catamaran to Papagayo beaches

Catamaran in Papagayo

Lanzarote’s southwest coast is a must-see. You can get there by land, or take in the scenery from a catamaran, one of the best boat tours in Lanzarote . Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island’s main attractions. Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches, the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago.

4h from Puerto del Carmen: Catamarans allow you to explore the entire south coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins. You can swim or kayak around the boat. See program and availability

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

8. Water sports: parasailing, jet skiing, paddle…

Parasailing in Puerto del Carmen

Duration: 10min flight Discover the pleasure of parasailing (parasailing), an activity we particularly enjoy, with the sensation of flying but less stress for take-off and landing. Enjoy exceptional views of Lanzarote and its volcanoes! Check availability and book your flight!

jet ski in Puerto del Carmen

If you prefer to stay on the water, you have other options too:

  • A jet-ski excursion for speed and views – see details and availability
  • A paddle outing to find your balance – see details and availability

9. Walk to Puerto Calero and return by boat

Puerto Calero

And finally, if you want to do a bit of walking, you can take the short, fairly flat hike between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. You’ll pass through town along the beaches, then through an undeveloped area before arriving at the Puerto Calero marina. Wear good shoes. You can return by water cab between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen to enjoy the beautiful views from the sea (10min crossing). Buy your tickets.

And you can even continue on past Puerto Calero to the little village of Playa Quemada, where the views are even more beautiful! But there’s no boat back to Playa Quamada.

10. Submarine tour

Submarine in Lanzarote

Yellow submarine… Yellow submarine… We warn you, after this trick, you’ll have the song stuck in your head! This tour takes you a little way out of the harbor to discover the seabed. It’s pretty impressive to be underwater like that, knowing you’re not that deep… no stress! It’s an ideal activity for the whole family (except claustrophobics, of course). But the room is big enough, so we didn’t feel any anxiety.

The tour does not depart from the port of Puerto del Carmen, but from Puerto Calero . You can get there in 10 to 15 minutes by car, or take the boat-bus from the port of Puerto del Carmen.

Duration 1h. Places are limited! See availability and make reservations

11. Activities on land

Buggy in Lanzarote

If you’d like to explore off the beaten track with a few adrenaline-pumping moments thrown in, one of the most popular activities in Puerto del Carmen is a buggy trip. It’s all about having fun, taking to the dirt roads and discovering Lanzarote’s magnificent landscapes: volcanoes and cliffs.

Don’t forget to wear a bandana, cover your face and protect yourself from dust! Drivers must have a valid driver’s license

12. Enjoy Puerto del Carmen’s other beaches: Matagorda, Pocillos…

PLaya Matagorda

The first two beaches listed in this article are our favorites, but the city is quite long and you can find other beach options, with different styles:

  • Playa Matagorda and its northern section Playa de los Pocillos, very spacious but with slightly less fine sand.
  • The small cove of Playa El Baranquillo (at low tide)
  • The little cove in front of the Hotel Fariones
  • The small cove of Playa La Penita, hidden from the street

13. Minigolf and arcade games

minigolf in Puerto del Carmen

In Puerto del Carmen, you’ll also find two minigolfs:

  • Classic outdoor miniature golf: Forbidden Temple Park
  • and if it’s too hot (or even raining, although that’s not unusual…), there’s also an indoor miniature golf course with arcade games: Indoor Crazy Minigolf. Book your tickets now.

Puerto del Carmen

14 à 19. What to see around Puerto del Carmen

We strongly advise you to discover the whole island of Lanzarote. But, if you don’t want to do a lot of driving, check out places to see near Puerto del Carmen (less than 15min drive).

14. Las Grietas

trips lanzarote puerto del carmen

Narrow canyons sculpted by the elements on the slopes of a volcano. A fascinating and easily accessible place, with several small canyons of different sizes to explore.

Driving time from Puerto del Carmen = 10min

15. La Geria

La Geria

One of the best things to do in Lanzarote is to discover the unique vineyards on the volcanic soil. They are mainly located in the center of the island between the volcanoes. It’s quite impressive to see these plants growing on the black soil when there’s nothing else around. La Geria is the best-known vineyard. You can taste and buy their wine, and admire the view from the parking lot!

Driving time from Puerto del Carmen = 15min

16. Montana Cuervo

Montana Cuervo

Our favourite volcano (and hike) in Lanzarote is Montana Cuervo. It’s one of the most popular, so we advise you to get there early. But it’s definitely worth it. The place is magnificent and you can even walk inside. Wear good shoes and protect yourself from the sun! Allow 1 to 2 hours, depending on the length of your visit and the number of photos you wish to take.

17. Montana Colorada

Montana Colorada

Just opposite Montana Cuervo, you can also take a tour of Montana Colorado, the colorful volcano with its huge volcanic bomb. Allow 1 hour for the tour. And, once again, wear good shoes and protect yourself from the sun!

18. Arrecife

Arrecife

Lanzarote’s capital is just south of Costa Teguise. It’s not a very touristy place, but there are still a few places to see. You can:

  • Tour the San Gines fishing port with touches of blue
  • Visit the historic church of San Gines
  • Admire the fort on the small island: Castillo de San Gabriel.

19. Playa Quemada

Playa Quemada

And on the other side of the world from the big city of Arrecife, you can choose to discover a small, isolated fishing village, with its white houses and magnificent views. Playa Quemada is really charming, and we recommend that you stop off at one of the little restaurants by the water!

20 and 21. Best excursions from Puerto del Carmen

20. timanfaya national park.

Timanfaya National Park

It’s a must-have. Timanfaya National Park is Lanzarote’s best excursion. It’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth.

Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil. It’s protected. Next to the restaurant, you can see the water projected from the Earth and touch the hot rocks. After that, you board a bus to visit the park on the unique route they’ve created. This route offers fantastic panoramas of the many volcanic craters (formed mainly between 1730 and 1736), different types of lava and incredible colors.

  • Driving time from Puerto del Carmen = 30min
  • If you don’t want to drive, there are group excursions combined with other Lanzarote attractions: A little of everything in Lanzarote – see prices, photos and availability Los Hervideros – prices, pictures and availability With Tubes de laves – see prices, photos and availability
  • And much more – see the tours that include Timanfaya

21. Works by César Manrique

Cactus Garden

Lanzarote is also famous for being the home of architect and artist César Manrique. Above all, he liked to integrate architecture with the natural environment. It’s thanks to him that there are no major developments on the island and that it retains so much charm with all its little white houses.

One of our favorite places of his was the cactus garden, but there’s also a foundation, his house, the viewpoint over La Graciosa (Mirador del Rio) and Jamaeos del Aqua.

Family bike.

trips lanzarote puerto del carmen

We haven’t done any, but people seem to have a great time pedaling and exploring in groups. There are 2-seat and 4-seat versions. Who will be in charge?

Restaurants and nightlife

Restaurant Lani

The town is also full of restaurants. We preferred Playa Blanca’s gastronomic offerings, but you still have an excellent choice to find what you like. In the evening, you’ll also find plenty of bars with live music.

Gran Casino de Lanzarote

trips lanzarote puerto del carmen

For something a little different, there’s also a small casino right in the heart of Puerto del Carmen. It’s called Gran Casino, although it’s quite small… you’ll find slot machines and a few gaming tables (blackjack, roulette, poker…).

And of course, if you like shopping, you’ll find plenty of boutiques of all styles (depending on the area).

15 Fun Things to Do in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote (+Map)

Jovita

  • Updated On February 22, 2024

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s busiest, most bustling resort. It offers an appealing harbour beside the original old town, plus a great range of modern accommodation. For beaches, dining, nightlife, water sports and more, there’s no better base on the island.

Puerto del Carmen is conveniently located in central Lanzarote, around 10 minutes southwest of the airport. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has grown into the island’s most popular resort. The resort comprises the harbourside old town, plus the newer tourist developments that lie to the east.

The modern, built-up part of Puerto del Carmen is a bustling resort packed with holiday apartments, hotels, cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and water sports outlets. These are clustered around Avenida de las Playas, the resort’s main street by the beach.

The original harbour still has a Canarian feel, and this area is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the region. You can also board a range of boat trips from here. Other things to do in Puerto del Carmen include sunbathing, shopping and water sports.

Playa Grande in Lanzarote

Even if you are staying in another Lanzarote resort, we heartily recommend spending at least one day in Puerto del Carmen, not least because this appealing place offers a lively nightlife scene.

Read on to discover all the best activities in Puerto del Carmen. Along with our recommendations for the best places to stay, should you decide to make this resort your Lanzarote base.

Things to Do in Puerto del Carmen

Relax at the beaches .

There is no shortage of beaches in Puerto del Carmen. As they’re all connected by a seafront promenade, it’s simple to visit them all before picking your favourite. Each is briefly outlined here, and to find more information you can read our Puerto del Carmen beach guide.

Playa Grande

As the name suggests, Playa Grande – literally translating as large beach – is the main one in the resort. With soft, golden sands and crystal clear water, it stretches for more than a kilometre.

Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande offers great amenities, including parking, showers, a lifeguard service and an abundance of sunbeds and parasols. The beach also offers disabled access and even has aquatic chairs. Palm trees provide shade, and you can also enjoy the gardens, or unparalleled views towards Los Ajaches, a sizable volcanic rock formation.

Avenida de las Playas fronts Playa Grande, and this sociable area offers a good variety of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Playa Chica

Playa Chica is Puerto del Carmen’s southernmost beach. It’s a family-friendly coastal spot with calm water ideal for children and scuba divers alike. Driving there involves travelling down some narrow roads and it can be tricky to find a parking space, but the beach that awaits makes the trip most worthwhile.

Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Chica is picture postcard perfect, with volcanic rock providing a pleasing contrast to the white sands and azure waters. The facilities here are also impressive, particularly for snorkelers and scuba divers. Local diving schools can take you out to see the shipwrecks, underwater caves and marine life close to Playa Chica.

Kids love to throw some bread into the water here, as this attracts fish in a range of sizes, colours and shapes.

Location: Google Maps

There’s also the lovely and less crowded Playa de los Pocillos and Playa Matagorda beaches, which are located on the eastern outskirts of the resort. You can read more about them in this guide.

Admire the Old Town Harbour

The resort’s atmospheric old town, which is clustered around the harbour, is a wonderful place for a wander. Some of the best restaurants in Puerto del Carmen can be found here. Or take an early morning stroll and you can fully appreciate how peaceful and picturesque it is.

Puerto del Carmen old town harbour

The harbour is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants, and you can also book fishing charters, glass-bottomed boat trips and more here. Every evening, the local eateries serve up the freshest seafood, and there’s a vibrant, welcoming ambience at the old town’s bars. It’s a lovely place to watch the sun sink over the horizon, too.

A children’s playground is also positioned conveniently close to the harbourside restaurants.

Wander Along the Promenade

Another of the best places to eat in Puerto del Carmen is at the restaurants lining the promenade. This is the world’s longest coastal walkway, and it runs for 26 kilometres (or 16 miles) between Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. The promenade also runs through Los Pocillos, Matagorda, Playa Honda and Arrecife.

The seafront promenade in Puerto del Carmen

You can walk or cycle along the promenade. If you stray too far, it’s always easy to get back to your resort by bus or taxi.

If you want to rent a bike, we can highly recommend Bike Sensations .

Visit the Upmarket Puerto Calero

Located only a few kilometres from Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero was the very first marina built in Lanzarote in 1989. Today it is able to accommodate 450 yachts.

Puerto Calero marina

It’s much more than a marina, though. Puerto Calero waterfront hosts plenty of restaurants and bars catering for everyone. Shopping enthusiasts also won’t be disappointed since Puerto Calero hosts some nice boutiques plus a market which takes place every Tuesday and Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM. The market here is more sophisticated with more handmade stuff compared to other markets on the island. A good place to get some souvenirs.

Puerto Calero Market

Puerto Calero is also home to some of the finest Lanzarote hotels such as 4-star Hotel Costa Calero Thalasso & Spa and 5-star Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa (adults-only).

There are numerous ways to visit Puerto Calero: on foot, by bus, by taxi or a water taxi.

It takes around 1 hour to walk here from Puerto del Carmen.

The most popular option is hopping on a water taxi which runs between Puerto Calero and the old harbour of Puerto del Carmen. Or you can go on foot forward and return back on a water taxi.

Take a Dive in a Real Submarine

Another unique activity you can do in Puerto Calero is to explore the Lanzarote coast in a real submarine. Watching the underwater world from up close will create memories you won’t forget.

Submarine Safari in Puerto Calero

The yellow air-conditioned submarine will take you 30 metres below the sea and you’ll be able to watch the diversified marine life through available viewing ports for 1 hour. It’s a great activity for the whole family.

Puerto Calero is easily accessible from Puerto del Carmen, as we’ve already explained above.

Head to Matagorda for Plane Spotting

Matagorda is a small resort on the Eastern outskirts of Puerto del Carmen. We actually have a full guide about it here.

It’s a great alternative to Puerto del Carmen if you are looking for a more calm and laid-back vibe. Another great thing about it, Matagorda is really close to the main Lanzarote airport. That’s why it’s a perfect place for plane enthusiasts.

You can watch planes come and go from one of the restaurants overlooking the ocean or you can arrange a picnic on the beach.

Plane spotting in Lanzarote

The best spot for perfect photos is at the end of the runway ( exact location ). The airplanes land right over your head!

It’s a great unique attraction for both adults and children. There are few places in the whole world where you can get so close to a runway.

Our kids were absolutely thrilled and asked to come back here again and again. The pictures and videos you can get here are amazing!

Sample Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Puerto del Carmen is perfect for new or experienced fans of water sports, scuba diving and snorkelling. An abundance of marine life, coupled with a stunning underwater landscape, place the resort among Europe’s best dive sites. You can see shipwrecks, caverns, tunnels and volcanic reefs here.

Species to look out for include anemones, angel sharks, barracuda, groupers, rays, seahorses, squid and tuna. You might also spot orange corals, sea slugs and sponges.

If you’re not an experienced diver, we recommend allowing local professionals to lead the way by booking an organised trip.

Scuba Diving Experience with 2 Dives

This four hour experience includes full instruction. You’ll dive in shallow waters as part of a small group, and there’s no more than two participants per instructor. The two dives will take you to depths of six and 12 metres, and you’ll even get a diving diploma to take away.

Snorkeling Trip with Dive Instructor

When you’re short of time or prefer snorkelling to diving, this two hour trip is ideal. You’ll get up close to colourful fish and other forms of marine life, without having to learn to dive. Scubapro snorkelling equipment is supplied, as are the services of a PADI-certified guide.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

There are plenty of shopping opportunities in Puerto del Carmen and surrounding areas.

In the resort itself, you have a big Biosfera Plaza shopping centre. It offers a range of international clothing labels such as Timberland, Zara, Levi’s and many more. The centre has an open-air structure with beautiful views over the ocean. There is also a very fun dinosaur-themed mini golf on the top floor!

Biosfera Plaza shopping centre

Soco shopping centre is not as big as Biosfera Plaza but it’s conveniently located on the strip opposite the Fariones hotel. It features such brands as Adidas, Superdry and a large Mercadona supermarket on the ground floor. For kids, a new indoor play park opened in October 2023.

Soco shopping centre

Plus, adjacent to the shopping centre you can find standalone Mango, Esprit, and Fundgrube stores.

Mango, Esprit, and Fundgrube stores

If you are willing to grab a taxi or catch a bus, we also recommend visiting Deiland in Playa Honda ( location ) and the newest and largest Open Mall in the capital Arrecife ( location ) with such brands as Primark, Stradivarius, Calzedonia, and many more.

Bus number 3 stops at both of these shopping centres. Here is the route map . The stop for Deiland is C.C. Deiland while the stop for Open Mall is Los Alonso.

Play a Round of Mini Golf

Mini golf is one of our favourite things to do with children in Lanzarote. Puerto del Carmen has two great mini golfs:

  • Jurassic Kingdom Mini Golf. Amazingly decorated mini golf course located on the rooftop of Biosfera Plaza shopping centre ( location ). You will also find the open-air cinema, 6D cinema, the escape room, and other great attractions on the same rooftop. Check out the official website .

Kids at Jurassic Kingdom Mini Golf in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

  • Forbidden Temple Park. The brilliant 15-hole mini golf course with an onsite bar. Conveniently located on the strip ( location ).

Visit the Capital of Lanzarote

Arrecife is a short 15-minute drive away from Puerto del Carmen. Bus number 3 will take you to the Arrecife bus station and you can walk into town from there.

It’s not a touristy place but we definitely recommend visiting it. There are plenty of things to do there and the town is really beautiful.

Arrecife Gran Hotel Spa, Lanzarote

The main town beach, Playa Reducto, is very nice with palm trees, calm waters and nice golden sand. Right near the beach, you’ll see the tall building, the tallest on the island, in fact. That’s Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa ( location ) and you can get up to the top floor to enjoy a cup of coffee and dessert in their restaurant with mindblowing views! Anyone can go in, you don’t need to stay in the hotel.

Other things to check out are: Castillo de San Gabriel fortress ( location ), Charco San Gines lagoon ( location ), the church nearby , and the shipwreck site, which is a little bit out of the town here .

Have Fun at Rancho Texas Park

When staying in Puerto del Carmen, you happen to be really close to Rancho Texas park. This is one of Lanzarote’s top attractions, and ideal for a whole day out. The park combines a zoo and creature-centred demonstrations with a water park.

Feel impressive birds of prey soaring just above your head when the resident condors, eagles, hawks and vultures spread their wings each day. Mammals you can see here, meanwhile, include bison, cougars, seals and white tigers.

Rancho Texas also offers daily demonstrations, themed events, pony rides for children and cowboy-style barbecues.

A free daily bus service runs from Puerto del Carmen to Rancho Texas. Check out the schedule here .

Go for a Round of Golf

The Canary Islands’ warm sunny weather and stunning volcanic landscapes provide the perfect setting for a game of golf. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, Puerto del Carmen is the place to hone your handicap.

The Lanzarote Golf Resort is located right by Puerto Del Carmen, and offers superb views over the mountains and coastline. It’s an 18-hole, par 72 course in a rather windswept spot, with wide fairways and fringed by beds of gravel formed from dark lava.

10 Things to Do in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Home | Travel | Europe | Spain | Canary Islands | Lanzarote | 10 Things to Do in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote , is one of the liveliest tourist hubs on the Island of Volcanoes. However, it wasn’t always this way; just a few years ago, it was just a quaint fishing village. While it undoubtedly possessed its own charm back then, the transformation into the bustling tourist destination it is today is quite remarkable.

There’s an abundance of things to do in Puerto del Carmen , making it an ideal base for discovering some of the best attractions in Lanzarote . It’s also a perfect destination for group visits, as the city offers something for everyone. Our three-day excursion to Lanzarote left us pleasantly surprised, and we found ourselves returning several times thereafter.

So, if you are thinking about enjoying water sports, lying in the sun on one of the best beaches on the island, shopping to your heart’s content, or venturing out on an adventurous hiking trail, I recommend spending at least one day here. Moreover, Puerto del Carmen’s town center comes alive at night, boasting numerous venues for partying and showcasing your dance moves.

In this guide, I will walk you through the top things to do in Puerto del Carmen , along with recommendations for the best hotels and restaurants to savor exquisite meals.

1. Visit Playa Grande, one of the best things to do in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen stands out as one of the best beaches in Lanzarote , making it a must-visit during your stay, especially if you enjoy spending your days by the sea.

As an urban beach located in the town center, I was genuinely surprised by the crystal-clear waters of this stunning beach in Puerto del Carmen . Additionally, its scenic views of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument make it an ideal spot to spend a morning or afternoon enjoying all its charm.

Playa Grande, puerto del carmen beach

With nearly one mile of golden sand, it is surrounded by the Avenida de las Playas promenade , which I will talk about later. This central location means that the beach is always bustling with activity, making it a popular spot, particularly during high season. However, even with the crowds, it’s a fantastic choice for a refreshing swim in the sea.

For families, Playa Grande offers a range of services and amenities for a comfortable beach experience, including sun loungers, beach bars, showers, and lifeguards. Moreover, its proximity to a bus stop ensures easy access to nearby cities.

2. Avenida de las Playas, one of the best attractions in Puerto del Carmen

Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen is a picturesque promenade adorned with palm trees, spanning approximately 2.4 miles. It’s a favorite spot for leisurely strolls as it offers a delightful ambiance enhanced by the soothing sea breeze, particularly enjoyable during sunset.

For avid shoppers, this promenade is a paradise, boasting the highest concentration of shops in Puerto del Carmen , along with numerous supermarkets and some of the most famous restaurants in the area. Also, the renowned Biosfera Plaza , which stands out as the largest shopping center in Puerto del Carmen , is located near the western end of the avenue. Covering a vast area of 270,000 square feet, Biosfera Plaza houses a variety of fashion stores and prominent brands, creating the perfect destination for those seeking a comprehensive shopping experience in one location.

Another option for shopping, close to Avenida de las Playas, is the Puerto del Carmen market held at Plaza del Varadero every Friday. This market is one of the most popular on the island, featuring over one hundred stalls offering a diverse array of local products, including cheeses, wines, fruits, and crafts. You can also enjoy traditional Canarian folk music performances and dances and immerse yourself in the local culture. In short, it’s one of the most essential things to do in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote .

Additionally, the market is adjacent to the Puerto del Carmen marina , where you can marvel at large boats and enjoy fresh seafood delicacies at the restaurants lining the port.

3. Playa Chica, one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen is another popular attraction, offering a stunning cove with 200 feet of fine sand. Its horseshoe shape provides natural protection from the wind, creating tranquil waters that are perfect for families with children.

Playa Chica, puerto del carmen lanzarote things to do

The beach is equipped with a comprehensive range of services, solidifying its reputation as one of the best beaches in Puerto del Carmen . We were captivated by its unique landscape, particularly the striking contrast of colors: pristine white sand, rugged volcanic formations, and shimmering turquoise waters.

However, Playa Chica’s allure extends beyond its aesthetics. It is renowned as one of the best spots for snorkeling, diving, and surfing in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote . Whether you’re a novice or an experienced enthusiast, the beach offers an opportunity to explore its mesmerizing seabed, teeming with diverse marine life, hidden caves, and sunken ships. Moreover, there are numerous diving schools available for visitors interested in embarking on underwater adventures.

4. Dolphin watching, one of the most exciting things to do in Puerto del Carmen

One of the most awe-inspiring things to do in Puerto del Carmen is undoubtedly embarking on a dolphin-watching tour . While these magnificent creatures roam freely in their natural habitat, encountering them in these waters is highly probable, so I recommend taking some time to experience this wonderful adventure.

Dolphin watching, things to do in puerto del carmen Lanzarote

During our last trip, dolphin-watching in Lanzarote became one of the most memorable highlights. Although various tour options are available, we opted for this excursion and were fortunate to witness numerous dolphins – you won’t believe how happy we were!

Moreover, these excursions in Puerto del Carmen offer a comprehensive experience. Alongside the exhilarating search for these friendly animals, you have the opportunity to take a refreshing swim in the sea and indulge in snorkeling. Whether or not dolphins grace you with their presence, the journey offers unparalleled panoramic views of Lanzarote and promises a delightful time for all. So, I cannot recommend it enough.

Puerto del Carmen isn’t just bustling during the day; it’s also renowned for its vibrant nightlife, offering some of the best nightclubs in Lanzarote . If you’re in the mood for some nighttime fun, you’ll find a plethora of options to explore. From bars featuring live music to cozy pubs, lively clubs, and the famous Lanzarote Gran Casino , there’s something for everyone.

Heineken Bar, nightlife puerto del carmen

For a more laid-back evening, consider wandering around the Varadero area and Avenida de las Playas, where you’ll discover numerous tapas bars and watering holes. During our visit, we spent several nights at Heineken Bar and the San Miguel Brewery , two of the best bars in Puerto del Carmen . With their chic ambiance, extensive beer selections, and top-notch music, we truly enjoyed our summer nights while seated at one of the comfortable tables on the terrace.

If you’re still brimming with energy and itching to dance the night away, head to Lanzarote Palace , one of the most renowned attractions in Puerto del Carmen . Located in the Varadero area, this club guarantees a night of excitement and fun. Just keep in mind that it’s only open on weekends.

6. Playa de los Pocillos, another must-see beach in Puerto del Carmen

Another must-visit beach in Puerto del Carmen is Playa de los Pocillos , stretching over half a mile in length and offering an ideal setting for families to enjoy quality time together. Its name, “Los Pocillos,” originates from the small puddles left by the waves on the sand, creating safe bathing spots that look like miniature pools for children. Additionally, there is a dedicated play area for the little ones to enjoy and have fun.

Playa de los Pocillos, puerto del carmen boat trips

We spent an entire day basking in the sun at Playa de los Pocillos, benefiting from its comprehensive amenities and services, including lifeguards, umbrellas, and restrooms, among others. With its clear waters, golden sands, and favorable conditions, the beach is perfect for various water sports activities such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, catering to visitors of all interests who come to enjoy the beauty of Puerto del Carmen in the Canary Islands .

What truly captured our attention, however, were the planes passing overhead, as Lanzarote Airport is located nearby. Initially, we hadn’t noticed it, but soon, we began to observe the planes taking off and landing. It was the perfect finishing touch to our experience.

7. Scuba diving, an unforgettable thing to do in Puerto del Carmen

In addition to tons of above-ground attractions in Puerto del Carmen , this charming town harbors a mesmerizing underwater world waiting to be explored. It’s a true paradise for water enthusiasts, whether you are a seasoned diver or a beginner eager to delve into the depths. If you’re contemplating what to do in Puerto del Carmen during your stay, consider immersing yourself in one of these excursions.

Scuba diving, things to do in puerto del carmen

For beginners, I highly recommend booking this diving course to acquire the necessary skills for underwater exploration. This introductory dive allows you to familiarize yourself with diving equipment and techniques under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Once you feel confident, you’ll descend into the warm waters of Lanzarote, where you’ll encounter vibrant coral reefs and breathtaking marine life. With two dives lasting between 30 and 40 minutes each, you’ll have enough time to enjoy every moment of this unforgettable experience.

If you’re not quite ready to dive in with scuba gear, fear not. You can still appreciate the wonders of marine life on this snorkeling excursion , which offers a more surface-level encounter with the underwater realm.

8. Ride in a submarine, one of the most unique excursions in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

If you are looking for a truly unique thing to do in Puerto del Carmen , consider exploring the underwater world on the Lanzarote submarine . Yes, you read that correctly. This excursion offers the opportunity to marvel at spectacular panoramic views of the seabed and encounter a variety of marine species in their natural habitat.

Lanzarote submarine, things to do in puerto del carmen lanzarote

The submarine tour includes a 40-minute dive, descending to depths of 100 feet, with pick-up available from any hotel in Puerto del Carmen . Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll journey through the underwater world, peering through the glass windows of the submarine. As you marvel at the underwater scenery, your guide will provide fascinating insights into the island’s marine diversity.

At the end of the tour, you’ll receive a certificate commemorating your participation in this extraordinary journey. Not only is it one of the most recommended boat trips in Puerto del Carmen , but it’s also regarded as one of the best boat excursions in Lanzarote . So, make sure not to miss out on this unforgettable adventure.

9. Parasailing, a fun thing to do in Puerto del Carmen

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush and a memorable addition to your vacation itinerary, parasailing is one of the best things to do in Puerto del Carmen . It’s undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating experiences, offering breathtaking panoramic views and an exciting ride high above the sea.

For those unfamiliar with parasailing, it’s a water sport that involves flying with a parachute while being towed by a boat. While it might seem daunting initially, there are few experiences as invigorating as soaring 200 feet above the sea while enjoying the scenery from a unique vantage point.

Parasailing, puerto del carmen lanzarote things to do

I’ll admit I was a bit apprehensive at first, but I decided to take the plunge and book this experience . The adventure begins with a brief ride on a small boat, where you’ll receive explanations about basic safety protocols. Then, it’s time to open your parachute and take to the skies.

What’s fantastic about parasailing is that you have the option of flying solo or in groups of up to three people. Whether you’re a couple seeking adventure or a family looking for excitement, parasailing is one of the best things to do in Puerto del Carmen , promising excitement and thrills for all.

10. Visit Puerto Calero from Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Another highlight of visiting Puerto del Carmen is checking out Puerto Calero , a charming town located just two miles away. Puerto Calero is renowned for its array of recreational and aquatic activities, luxury boutiques, and impressive yachts docked in the harbor. The port area is an ideal location for those considering boat rentals in Lanzarote . Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the quaint traditional architecture that characterizes the town of Puerto del Carmen .

Puerto Calero, puerto del carmen excursions

Moreover, Puerto Calero is home to the Cetacean Museum , one of the best attractions near Puerto del Carmen , especially for families traveling with children. This museum provides insights into the marine species inhabiting the Canary Islands and highlights efforts aimed at their protection and conservation. It’s situated along the same promenade, so there’s no need to veer off course to visit it.

There are several hiking routes between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen , which makes it very easy to travel from one town to another on foot. However, we decided to take this ferry to enjoy the wonderful views from the deck instead. Alternatively, you can also go by car.

Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, an attraction in Puerto del Carmen you should skip

Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park is often touted as a must-visit attraction in Puerto del Carmen by many blogs. However, we strongly advise against it. The park features a variety of wild animals from different parts of the world, all held in captivity.

We firmly believe that animals should not be exploited for human entertainment. Instead, we focus on many other things to do in Puerto del Carmen that allow us to appreciate animals in the wild. The town of Puerto del Carmen offers numerous alternatives that respect ecosystems and natural habitats, which makes Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park an unnecessary investment of time and money.

Other places to see near Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

If you have a flexible itinerary and plenty of time to explore Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote , here are some of the best places in the surrounding area to consider:

Many would be surprised to find out that Lanzarote is renowned for its production of quality wines with a distinctive flavor. Despite the challenging terrain covered in volcanic ash, locals have ingeniously adapted their cultivation methods, which has resulted in a method unique to the region.

La Geria, a place to go near puerto del carmen

Visiting the wineries of La Geria is one of the must-do activities in Puerto del Carmen . You can spend a full day exploring the area or opt for a more relaxed experience by staying in one of the rural hotels in Lanzarote. You don’t have to be a wine aficionado; all you need is curiosity to learn about the production process and, perhaps, to indulge in tasting local products.

You can embark on this journey independently by traveling along the LZ-30 highway and stopping at wineries that pique your interest. Alternatively, like us, you can opt for this organized tour . We chose to indulge in a tasting at the iconic Vega de Yuco Winery during one of our trips to Lanzarote, and it was an unforgettable experience.

Las Grietas

Visiting Las Grietas is one of the best things to do in Puerto del Carmen , offering an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and witness landscapes reminiscent of another planet. As you may already know, Lanzarote is an island of volcanic origin, and Las Grietas provides a tangible glimpse into its volcanic history.

Las Grietas, a place to see near puerto del carmen lanzarote

Here, you can observe the layers of solidified lava from various volcanic eruptions that have shaped the island over time. We stumbled upon this remarkable site almost serendipitously, as it was recommended to us by one of the hosts at our accommodation. However, I believe that Las Grietas will gain popularity over time as more travelers come to discover its beauty.

This peculiar geological formation is located next to the slopes of the Montaña Blanca volcano . To reach it, take the LZ-35 road, which connects the towns of San Bartolomé and Tías, and park your car in the unpaved parking lot nearby. It’s approximately 15 minutes from Puerto del Carmen, so it’s conveniently close. From there, simply cross the tunnel on foot and follow the path leading up the mountain.

Volcán del Cuervo

The Volcán del Cuervo , also known as Raven’s Volcano, is one of the top attractions near Puerto del Carmen that you simply cannot miss. Situated within Los Volcanes Natural Park, it ranks among the most important volcanoes in Lanzarote . Studies have revealed that it was the first volcano to emerge in Timanfaya , which explains why so many tourists come here to see the famous Caldera de los Cuervos .

Volcán del Cuervo, a place to visit near puerto del carmen

It’s also one of the best hiking routes in Lanzarote offering an accessible adventure suitable for families with children. Covering a total distance of three miles, you’ll traverse captivating landscapes to reach the 114-foot-deep caldera of the volcano. Personally, I found it to be a truly unique experience, and I highly recommend wandering among its rocky formations. Moreover, you’ll have the opportunity to identify lava-level markers from past eruptions and enjoy surreal landscapes along the way.

While you can undertake this hike independently, opting for this guided tour of Los Volcanes Natural Park is a more convenient option. This Puerto del Carmen tour includes a pick-up service and a well-optimized itinerary, ensuring you make the most of your time. With the guidance of your tour guide, you’ll have the chance to explore the park’s highlights and focus on enjoying your vacation to the fullest.

Looking back

Formerly known as Tiñosa , the area of Puerto del Carmen was already inhabited before the arrival of the Normans to Lanzarote . After the conquest took place in the port of the small fishing village, it would become the most important on the island, although over the years the growth of Arrecife would make it barely visible.

In 1957 it would receive its current name in honour of its patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Carmen . 10 years later, the town began the race to become a major tourist destination, receiving visitors not only from Spain but also from the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany.

In the Plaza del Varadero every Friday from 10 am to 2 pm  there is a street market full of typical Lanzarote products and handicrafts ideal for souvenirs of the island.

Many bars do beer at €1.50 happy hour average price normal times are approx €3. There is a bar on the strip called Sunlounge that does pints of estrella everyday between 12 - 5pm for €1 a pint.

Look for restaurants that have a Menu Del Dia (Menu of the Day) or set menu. These are common and you'll get 3 courses for a set price.

Breakfast along the strip ranges from €3.95 - €5 for a full English

I personally can recommend Maritoni Restaurant they do a steak and chips special menu for around €10.95 and its delicious

Aroma Indian again have set menu

But there are 100s of restaurants along the main strip, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Mercadonna also do pack of 12 suave beer for €3.50. Its a decent beer too handy for apartment and they do fresh baguettes etc if you want to make food to take to the beach to save on costs.

Depending on where in PDC your staying, a taxi from the airport will be between 15/20euros and take approx 15 mins

The weather in May should be hot and sunny, we went May last year and were looking for the shade to cool off. Can be windy whatever the weather but could be welcome if it gets hot.

Hi thanks a million for reply that's great to hear 👍

You can certainly exist on a budget of €100 a day for two but perhaps not if you want to eat out morning noon and night.

For example:

A decent breakfast will be €4/€6 each and allow €2/€3 for a coffee - €12/€18. There are "all-in" offers for around €5 pp, but I generally find them disappointing (but all recommendations for food and drink are subjective).

A lunchtime or early afternoon baguette or similar light bite is in the region of €6/€8. Add in a beer for €2/€3 or a soft drink for €3/€4 and your bill is €10/€30 depending on how thirsty you are!

Evening meal main course can be done for €10/€12pp but you can double that in some of the larger places. I always used to say that you will know the difference between a €5 steak dinner and a €10 steak dinner, but prices have risen somewhat so I'll have to double those figures (apart from Maritoni's which is still the best food under €15 anywhere in the resort). The eateries in the harbour area tend to be a little more pricey than those on the Avenida - and if you want to go all out to impress the girl, a sirloin at The Fariones or Lani's will cost you over €30 but you are paying for the opulence and the view. Starters and dessert generally are between €5/€8 each (we tend to order one and share).

If you want a bottle of wine, €18/€25 at the lower end of the price range is not unreasonable but be prepared to swear when you see the price of the same bottle in the supermarket! An after dinner scotch/brandy/baileys etc will be €5/€8 and a last beer on the way home will cost you a little more than at lunchtime, €4/€5 especially if there is entertainment laid on.

Get some ham, cheese and bread from the supermarket and breakfast in your apartment or do something like a late breakfast and then dine early and avoid the bars (supermarkets sell very cheap beer as long as you don't go for imported UK brands) and you can spend under €50 but you can easily break the €100 barrier in one sitting - just don't do it every night!

Hi malcbox for your response very helpful indeed,we could certainly buy some foods in supermarkets and to that end is the mercadonna supermarke(local supermarket)cheaper or dearer than the spars or lidls for eg but we could certainly have the odd breakfast and lunch at apts but we probably would eat out more the odd breakfast and lunch but definitely dinner every night we heard that we can get the a three course meal in some places for about €20 or €25 is that true?and most English type breakfasts are around the €3.95 or €4.50 mark not sure if that includes tea/coffees and most drinks where around the €3-€5 mark so that's where we where basing our €100 budget how much are the local buses

The 3 course meal you are looking for is typically called "Menu Del Dia" in Spanish but it's not generally offered in the restaurants on the Avenida - they are set up to cater for tourists and have prices set with that clientele in mind. There was a thread last year discussing this very topic and it's probably still valid today

I've just stumbled across this article from 2022 which might be of interest to you - although a taxi to PdC from the airport does not cost €27 unless you are a very generous tipper!!

https://www.lanzaroteguide.com/prices-in-lanzarote/

Hi we stayed at La Penita in March. The pool bar has happy hours twice a day and during those a pint of Estrella is 1.50. We would have a decent size breakfast ( Top Gun was our favourite) which would cost around 12 euros for 2 people including drinks and then we didn't need anything for lunch, we just had a few light snacks in the apartment we bought a few bits in from Hyperdino just turn right out of reception and 3 minute walk..

Directly outside La Penita there is an all you can eat Chinese buffet and whilst we are not always buffet fans , it is a relatively small one which is continuously restocked so it was all hot and fresh - it was either 11.95 or 12.95 per person so really good value.

If you like Indian quite a few do 3 course menus which are again great value. Some very reasonably priced and very tasty pizza at various restaurants. There are some restaurants also with tapas menus again good prices.

There is live music very close to La Penita at The Dubliner, there is karaoke at Betty Boops , Coyote Bar and Mulligans, Spoons also had live music - all of those are about a 10 minute walk, none have entrance charge so how much you spend is entirely in your gift for those. This should hopefully show you can manage on your budget as long as you don't get through a lot of cocktails or spirits in the bars.

Taxi from airport was 15 euros.

Jane this is absolutely brilliant and very informative thank you ever so much 👍
