Minor Guest Policy

Guests are required to be 21 years of age (on embarkation day) to travel on their own. Guest ages will be verified at embarkation. Guests not conforming to this policy will result in denied boarding and no compensation will be provided at embarkation. For additional minor age restriction guidelines while on board, click here . Guests Under the Age of 21 MUST travel with a relative or guardian of 25 years of age or older

  • The guardian does not need to be a legal guardian.
  • The bookings must be cross-referenced with the relative or guardian’s stateroom and documented properly.
  • Guests who are 21 to 24 years of age may travel with their minor children.
  • Havana Staterooms and Suites: Minors must be 12 years of age or older in order to cruise in Havana accommodations.
  • Terrazza Staterooms: Minors must be 12 years of age or older in order to cruise in Terrazza accommodations.
  • Must have 1 chaperone for every 8 minors
  • Prepaid gratuities per minor are due at final payment
  • 8 or more staterooms must be booked through the Group Department and a $100 damage deposit per minor will be charged.

Traveling with Minors When traveling with a minor where one parent or both parents or legal guardians are not cruising, we strongly recommend bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent(s) or legal guardians authorizing the minor to travel with you. If there is no second parent with legal claims to the minor (due to sole custody, deceased, etc.) other relevant paperwork, such as a court decision, death certificate, birth certificate naming only one parent, would be useful to bring in place of a signed letter. This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security.

Where minor guests can be booked in relation to relative or guardian:

  • Guests 12 and younger If the relative or guardian insists on booking separate staterooms, minors must either be directly across the hall or next door. Guests 12 and under may not be assigned to a balcony stateroom without a relative or guardian (25 years of age or older) traveling in the balcony stateroom with them.
  • Guests 13 - 17 years of age Can be separated by up to 3 staterooms from a relative or guardian (25 years of age or older).
  • Guests 18 – 20 years of age Do not have any restrictions and may book whatever location they prefer.

Youth Curfew Guests 17 years of age and under who are not accompanied by an adult in their traveling party, 21 years of age or older, must be clear of all public areas by 1:00am.

Exceptions: Guests under the age of 21 may travel without a relative or guardian of 25 years of age or older under the following conditions:

  • Proper documentation must be provided at embarkation. Failure to provide documentation or not conforming to this policy will result in denied boarding and no compensation will be provided.
  • Documentation includes: marriage license issued by the County Clerk’s Office; legal proof of civil union; for newly married couples: a copy of the marriage license application or certificate signed by the official that performed the ceremony.

Qualified Military Personnel

  • Applies to US Military Personnel and Canadian National Defense personnel (and their traveling companions in the same stateroom) of 18 – 20 years of age.
  • Copy of proof of service must be provided at embarkation. Failure to provide documentation or not conforming to this policy will result in denied boarding and no compensation will be provided.

HOWEVER: For transatlantic, transpacific, Hawaii, select South American and other selected cruises and/or CruiseTours, the infant must be at least 12 months old as of the first day of the cruise/CruiseTour. For the purposes of this policy, any cruise that has 3 or more days consecutive at sea will require infants to be 12 months old on the first day of the cruise/CruiseTour.

Royal Caribbean reserves the right to revoke or otherwise restrict drinking privileges of any guest, regardless of age.

Guests should be advised to take notice of the guidance provided in the Cruise Compass as events and locations vary by ship and itinerary.

Cruise Line Minimum Age Policies: What Young Adults Need To Know

minimum age policies for cruises

One of the most frustrating times in anyone's life is that awkward time between 18 and 25. It's a mixture of confusing and often conflicting messages about your status as an adult member of society. For instance, you can vote and serve in the military at 18 but can't buy a pack of cigarettes till 21 or rent a car till 25. Well ... unfortunately, the same situation applies to booking a cruise. Most cruise lines will not allow guests under 21 to book a cruise or even board the ship unless they are accompanied by a chaperone, guardian, or parent who declares they are responsible for the "Young Adult" guest.

Minimum Drinking Age Differs Too

This may seem like an unfair policy and it is even more confusing to our Canadian readers since 21 seems pegged to the US legal drinking age but in Canada, you can drink at 19. To confuse things further ... many lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line allow guests as young as 18 to drink while the ship is in international waters with a waiver signed by their parent or guardian.

As these policies related to minimum drinking ago will differ from cruise line to cruise line. They may also differ depending on the part of the world where you are cruising. This is why we always recommend that cruisers work with a trusted travel advisor who can make sure they are aware of the exact policies.

Each Cruise Line Has Different Minimum Age Policies

The cruise industry operates in its "own world" in many aspects because they are fundamentally international operations. As such, you'll find a variety of different lines having similar policies but with different details. It is incredibly frustrating when by all means, someone at 18 here in the US is considered an adult, can buy a house, fly to Europe and rent a hotel but, generally speaking, can't book a cruise. To add to the confusion, the 21 age restriction isn't specifically a drinking age issue because some lines allow you to drink at 18 in international waters with parent or guardian signing a waiver to confirm they accept the responsibility.

It is also important to note that just as the minimum age to book a cruise and drink on the cruise varies from line to line, so do a variety of other policies on the ship. These include things such as access to different venues such as comedy clubs, casino, and certain "adults only" areas such as Carnival's Serenity area where you need to be at least 21 to enter.

That being said though, with the exception of drinking and gambling where there are specific legal restrictions, most other policies are entirely at the discretion of the individual cruise line, ship, and crew, so for instance, a mature and respectful 20-year-old traveling with their 25-year-old companion will probably have no problem entering the Serenity deck on a Carnival cruise.

If you are a young adult between 10-20 years old and aren't sure of the exact policies, the best advice is to contact guest services once onboard and they can outline exactly what you will and won't be able to do. Your travel advisor will also be able to help with this too.

  Cruise Line Minimum Age Policies

Each cruise line has it's own nuances so while we've listed the major cruise line minimum age policies below, it is important that you work with a travel advisor to confirm specific details such as what you will be able to do or not do if you are under 21 as well as what the specific line considers when it comes to determining if your companion qualifies as a chaperone, guardian. In some cases this is a legal determination requiring official paperwork while others simply require a notice of liability to be submitted that essentially says that the senior guest in the cabin agrees to be responsible for the actions of the younger companion.

Furthermore, these policies are for cruises departing from North American ports. Other regions may have different age policies.

Taking A Cruise As A 18 or 20-Year-Old Can Be Confusing

Without a doubt, taking a cruise when you are between 18-20 years old is a confusing time. This is true on land as well but on a cruise, the policies can seem completely arbitrary and while you are essentially an adult at 18, you are both too old for most kids clubs and also too young to have full adult privileges on the ship.

One cruise line that does make an effort to cater to this group is Disney Cruise Line where they have the "1820 Society". Here you will find Adult activities such as coffee tastings and demonstrations about creating your favorite specialty coffee drinks - the same way over 21+ cruisers might do with Martini Tastings and Cocktail Making Classes.

Disney also offers many other activities for this specific age group even though there isn't a dedicated lounge like there is for younger guests.

If you are looking for these activities, make sure to check out your Personal Navigator or ask a crew member for a schedule.

Other cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean or Norwegian, simply expect 18-20-year-old guests to find activities like the ice skating shows, aqua theater or mini golf on your own and that's frankly disappointing since it isn't that difficult to pull together special group activities like Disney does on their ships.

Unlocking Tranquility: Ultimate Guide to Sleep Tourism

Cruise Ship Traveller

Cruises for 18-Year-olds (With or Without Parents) 2024

As you may already know, many cruise lines stipulate that you must be 21 years or older to travel alone on a cruise ship.

Therefore, 18-20-year-olds can only go on a cruise with another adult aged over 21. Most often, this will be a parent or guardian.

However, this can be a tricky age because those over 17 are deemed too old for organized onboard teen activities, and those under 21 are too young to drink and enjoy the bars and nightclubs to the max.

Young Woman Happy To Be Cruising Without Parents

It’s well worth looking into which cruise lines provide the best all-round activities and facilities to keep yourself or your 18-20 years sons and daughters entertained, even if they do have to go with parents.

We have also researched all the cruise lines on which you can travel solo at 18 years or with friends under 21.

Rest assured there are plenty of great options for the 18 to 20 age range.

Best Cruise for 18-Year-Olds

As a parent of an 18-year-old myself, it’s been worthwhile having a fresh look at the best options to keep all family members happy and entertained.

The best cruise lines for 18 to 20 years olds have a wide range of activities and lots of them.

So no matter their interests, there will be something for them to do.  Even if it’s something new they have never tried before.

Many 18 to 20 years olds will enjoy the typical onboard activities, including:

  • Deck parties
  • Dance ClassesLounging in and around the pools
  • Enjoying the water parks
  • Entertainment shows (including all the adults-only shows)
  • Playin ball games like basketball, tennis, golf
  • Fitness Centers
  • Spa treatments

Hopefully, the roundups below for the best cruise lines for 18-year-olds will help narrow your search.

You just then need to focus on the ideal ship with the activities you know most appeal to the 18-20 age groups.

Royal Caribbean for 18 to 20-year-olds

Royal Caribbean ships are some of the largest in the world, but even the smaller (but still large) ones are full of activities ideal for 18 to 20-year-olds.

Example activities on RCL include :

  • Bumper Cars
  • Ice Skating
  • Indoor Sky diving
  • Rock climbing Walls
  • Surf simulators

Note: Not every activity listed above is on every ship in the fleet.

Water Features

Royal Caribbean ships have great water features on their cruises, but one that stands out, in particular, is the Perfect Storm, a megaplex of slides like no other, which is on about five of their ships.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas Top Deck

Private Island

A stop-off at Royal Caribbean’s private island CocoCay will be a day to remember for any age, especially 18 to 20 years old.

CocoCay offers another range of activities and pools, or you just relax on the beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line for 18 to 20 years olds

Norwegian Cruises have a range of sports activities onboard that are very popular with 18 to 20 years olds.

Example activities on NCL include:

  • Climbing Wall
  • Go Karting track
  • Racing Simulators
  • Rope courses
  • Virtual Reality

Dressing up for a theme can be lots of fun, especially when combined with great music.

Themed party nights popular with young adults on NCL include:

  • White Hot Party (Glow Party on some ships)

Some NCL ships have awesome Aqua Parks with multiple pools, hot tubs, and some multi-level water slides, including one called Free Fall, which is claimed to be one of the fastest water slides on the seas.

Carnival Cruise Activities For 18-Year-Olds

Carnival Cruise brands itself as the “fun ship,” and that includes fun for 18 to 20-year-olds.

Carnival cruises are full of activities, examples including:

  • Fitness Machines
  • Mini Bowling
  • Rope Courses
  • Video Games

Carnival cruises tend to have great water play features, including at least one water slide.

If you’re single, Carnival is one of our top picks for 18 to 20-something singles cruises .

Disney Cruise Line for 18 to 20-year-olds

Everyone loves Disney or something Disney-related, right?

Whether it’s still princesses or Marvel and Star Wars, there’s so much to entertain the 18 to 20 age range, even if its primarily targeted at children and families as a whole.

Bearing that in mind, if you’re thinking of taking an 18, 19 or 20 year old, probably best to check with them first.  It’s an age where they feel they might have outgrown Disney for now.

Disney Cruise line has a special meet-up for 18 to 20 years olds, called the “ 1820 Society ”.  This is to get as many in this age range together, break the ice and get them socializing and having fun as soon as possible.

The first meet-up is in the Cove Cafe, an adults-only coffee shop.

If you are or have a child in this age range, it’s worth making an extra effort to get them to go to the first meet-up, even if a little apprehensive, as the Disney crew will soon make them feel at ease.

If the club is successful, which is generally is, you might hardly see your 18-year-old for the rest of the vacation. They’ll be off having fun.

All 1820 Society arranged activities are free.

You can find more information about the Disney 1820 Society by DCLfan here .

What to Look For – For Good 18 to 20 year olds Cruise

Bars and nightclubs.

While they may not be able to drink alcohol until they are 21 (unless in international waters ), most cruise lines let 18-20 years into the nightclubs and surrounding bars.

If they are new to bars and nightclubs, they offer an enjoyable enough experience without alcohol.

So whether it’s the disco or the Karaoke bar, there should be options for them to hang up and have fun.

Teenagers chatting at cruise ship bar

An ideal cruise ship for some 18 to 20 years old is one with many different sports activities.

The more choice, the better, so they can participate in their favorite sports, whether it’s time on the basketball court or finding something new to try, like golf or rock climbing.

Some cruise ships will also run tournaments and competitions.  Ideal for those with a competitive streak.

Adult Only Time

Like some older adults, even younger adults 18 to 20 want the option to get away from younger kids running around screaming (in fun).

The above-listed cruise lines, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, and  Disney, have spaces and decks restricted to 18s and over.

This also includes going to adults-only live shows, a comedy which is top-quality entertainment they can enjoy.

Depending on your views on gambling, 18-year-olds can test out the casinos and poker rooms onboard the ships. (Alaska sailings a minimum of 21 years of age).

Playing the casino responsibly or getting involved at the poker tables can be great fun.

(Assuming always you’re encouraging responsible gambling).

Bring a Friend

If your 18 to 20-year-old is an only child or there’s a big age difference between siblings, consider letting them bring a friend to hang out with.

True, you might see less of them as a family overall, but that will only be because they are off enjoying themselves.

Choose Larger Ships

When it comes to choosing a specific ship from a cruise line with 18 to 20-year-olds in mind, the large the ship, the more activities you can expect to have onboard.

Also, the newer or recently refurbed ships in the fleet of the cruise lines I’ve highlighted tend to be more suited to younger adults.

Mixer Events Specifically for 18-20 years olds

Whatever cruise ship you go on, see if the cruise line has any ice-breaker events specifically for 18-20 years olds.

Ice-breakers are a great way to get them mixing and socializing as soon as possible, and they can discover the ship’s activities together and no doubt end up enjoying it all more together.

Disney Cruise Line: Offers the 1820 Society, as we covered above.

Other 18 to 20-Year-old Cruise Lines Activities

Some of the other cruise lines, which may not be as all-around fun and ideal as are best picks, also cater directly to the 18-20-year-old range in some ways.

Celebrity Cruises – Offers a  “Gen NXT” Meeting Hotspot for ages 18 – 21 to get to know each other a bit better from the first night.

Cruises For 18-Year-Olds Without Parents

The vast majority of cruise lines require 18 years olds to be traveling with an adult over the age of 21.

However, if traveling at 18 and as well as 19 and 20 is your goal, whether traveling solo or with friends, we have found the best options for you.

They have a wide range of sports options, including

With some great entertainment on top.

Minimum Age Requirements for Norwegian Cruise Line:

Norwegian Cruise Line has set minimum age requirements that must be met by all passengers to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone onboard. The minimum age to sail on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship is generally 6 months old for most itineraries. However, for transatlantic, transpacific, and certain South American cruises, the minimum age is increased to 1 year old. It’s important to note that these age requirements may vary for specific sailings, and it’s always recommended to check with Norwegian Cruise Line directly or consult their official website for the most up-to-date information.

Age Restrictions for Specific Onboard Activities:

While Norwegian Cruise Line caters to passengers of all ages, there are certain onboard activities and amenities that have age restrictions in place. some require you to be 25

can you book a cruise under 21

This is a link external to TripAdvisor with information on age restrictions:

In theory, the best place to find short cruises from Miami in your time range is likely (another external link)

https://www.vacationstogo.com/

But, one person cruising alone often pays the same for the cabin as two people would. This is the "single supplement". Please know USA advertised cruise prices are nothing like the final actual cost because they exclude mandatory fees like port fees and other taxes! I priced a Carnival 4 night cruise - supposedly "$254 per person" - that actually would cost a solo traveller $712, total.

I tried to do a Carnival fake booking online, and the booking engine refused to proceed with no one in the cabin age 21/25.

So, a cruise might not be possible for you alone. Do NOT attempt to book online anyway. You could be refused boarding, with no refund.

I have no idea how someone outside North America asks questions of Carnival. The only thing I found in 20 minutes on their website that might help was

https://www.carnival.com/find-a-travel-agent?icid=CC_travel_agent_footer_10182018

I wish I had better news for you.

Thanks mate, I will check the links in order to see any alternatives .

They do cruises out of Miami in May.

Your other alternative is to look at backpacker sites and Facebook groups

maybe this one but I think you need to be 21

https://www.margaritaville.com/margaritaville-at-sea

also a ferry if that is of interest

http://www.baleariacaribbean.com/

Welcome to TripAdvisor, Konstantinos T.

You must be 21 to sail solo on Carnival. "Guests are required to be 21 years of age (on embarkation day) to travel on their own. Guest ages will be verified at embarkation. Guests not conforming to this policy will result in denied boarding..."

https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/category/~/youth-and-family/~/age-policies/c/464

Many US hotels and motels also require guests to be 21.

under 21 allowed to book a Princess cruise???

I had read a couple of posts on another board that Princess allows individuals under 21 (not married, not with an older adult) to book a Princess cruise?

Wondered about the accuracy of this. I had thought you had to be 21 or if you were younger than 21, then married or accompained by an adult of 25 or older??? I could be mixing this up with RCCL's requirements.

If it is true that those not yet 21 can book a cruise unaccompained by an older adult, then maybe Princess should reconsider this policy...(think "brownie riot" fiasco).

From the Princess website:

5. AGE REQUIREMENTS; DRINKING AGE; GAMING AGE; ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES.

The minimum passenger age is 6 months on Alaska, Canada/New England, Caribbean, Europe, Mexico and Transcanal cruises, and 12 months on all other cruises. Passengers under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a Passenger over the age of 21. No alcohol may be purchased or consumed by any Passengers under the age of 21. No Passenger under the age of 21 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board the ship.

It is going to be interesting after the new passport rules come into effect just how many of the younger set books cruises. The cost of the least expensive inside cabin isn't bad, but when you add the price of a passport to it for each person, well, it brings it up a bit. Might be very interesting after the first week in January 2007.

Wow. I don't think even Carnival allows individuals between 18-21 book a cruise without an older adult (age 25). Princess really needs to rethink this. This could explain the "brownie riot" incident. Looked like a lot of college kids gone haywire. $599, which is the price for a CB inside cabin, for a cruise is affordable for alot of college students and many do have passports.

I still think most of those brownie kids were old teenagers (17-19), not young adults (21-25) and really, it was an unusual incident, you don't hear about that kind of thing happening much or at all other than that time and I still think it could have been prevented if they had just had enough sense to notice that there was a crowd of young people having a real good time in whatever club it was they were having it in and thought better about shutting the club down and turning that energy out onto the ship with no other contained venue to go to. but that's beside the point.

most young people that have the wherewithall to book a cruise and transportation to/from port for themselves have proven themselves responsible by accumulating the spare money to pay for it on their own. if you're really trying to reduce the liklihood of a similar event happening again, you'd do better to prohibit people from traveling with/paying the way for 16-22's in their party..

I'm not meaning to approve of bad behaviour but I think it's ridiculous to think it's a good idea to tell hardworking hardsaving young adults they can't enjoy a good vacation because they're not mature enough to deserve it? while letting poorly supervised free-riding old teens/young adults continue to wreck havoc on the ships because mommy and daddy are payin' the bill...

I don't quite understand what the new rules has to do with whether someone books a cruise unless they have never gotten a passport before and can't afford that $100. A minor's passport is good for five years. In fact, our little one got her first one at age 3 and we renewed it last fall.

Coral

As stated earlier - you only need to be 18 to sail on Princess.

I have sailed several cruise lines, many that require one to be over 21 to have a cabin - and there have been far more problems on just one of those cruises (RCCL, Carnival) compared to all of my Princess cruises combined.

I personally am glad that Princess allows those who are 18 to sail. Most party goers who are 18 and looking for a party atmosphere are NOT going to book Princess.

Tatka

I don't understand what is a big deal with being 18+ and sailing the ship?

Kids go to college and live on their own at this age. Heck, we got married and had a kid when 19 (and both graduated from good university couple of years later). My friend emigrated to another country (Israel) when she was 17.5, had a kid, and at the age of 29 she is a doctor in US.

I don't believe there is much difference between being 19-20 and 21 - 22. It's all about responsibility, and you can find responsible and not people in both age groups.

Oh, and my 14 y.o. has his passport since 11, and he would have had it much earlier if we had US citizenship before.. Most 18 yo have cars, paying for insurance, gas, own apartments... It's not going to make them poor paying $100 for passports... They will need to have it anyway to get outside of the country, even if they don't cruise.

That whole Brownie Riot was a fluke! It was disgusting and out of control. However, I doubt this happens on many cruises.

I don't think many 21 and under like cruising as a mode of travel. There are other things they would rather do.

I have never seen many people in this age group- unless accompanied by older family members.

A Sixth?

What the heck was "the Brownie riot"?

There was a video on this thread of a recent sailing on the Crown. The last night of the cruise a group of young kids (18-21 looking) were out of control in the atrium and threw brownies. It was hard to watch and Princess for whatever reason allowed this to escalate into Kaos.

You'd be surprised how many people between 18 and 22 actually love to cruise. Cruise deals are always posted around campus and I know a lot of students who have taken advantage.

I thought Brownies were 8-10 yo girls? :D Seriously though...when I read the first thread titles about this I thought I would be seeing a bunch of crazed 10 yo girls running amuck! LOL Then I saw the video and saw the brownies being thrown and had to laugh!:p

Drinking Age on a Cruise: Can You Drink Under 21?

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. There’s no getting around it. If you want to buy booze, you have to be of legal age or face some serious consequences.

But what about on the drinking age on a cruise? Do you still have to be 21? After all, we’ve all heard of “international waters” — a magical place just a few miles offshore where the normal rules don’t apply. Doesn’t that mean if you are under the legal drinking age, but not in the U.S., that you can live it up?

Well, not so fast. If you are under the legal drinking age on shore, there is some good news in that yes, you can drink on your cruise… but not necessarily on the ship.

Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship in North America

can you book a cruise under 21

Ok, first things first. Most cruises won’t let you drink on the cruise ship if you aren’t 21 years old (assuming your cruise is departing and returning to the U.S.) . Here are the official policies of three major cruise lines as listed on their websites:

Royal Caribbean The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating in North America is twenty-one (21).

Carnival Guests must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol onboard. Proper I.D with birth date is required.

Princess Cruises The age for drinking on Princess ships is 21 years old.

So if you are sailing one of these cruise lines, even with a parent on board, then you can’t drink while on the ship.

However, Norwegian Cruise Lines is more lax in their policy. If you are considered a “young adult” (meaning 18-20 years old) and you are sailing with a parent who signs a waiver, then you can drink wine and beer aboard the ship — but not cocktails.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol.

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian Cruise Line permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel.

Drinking Age on Non-North America Sailings

Many countries have a drinking age that’s lower than the 21 years old seen in the United States. If you are sailing a cruise outside of North America, then the drinking age onboard is likely 18 years old . This usually includes sailings from Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

For example, Royal Caribbean makes the following adjustment for the onboard drinking age for many trips outside of North America:

  • The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is eighteen (18).

Princess also specifies that the drinking age is 18 years old on its cruises in Australia, China, Europe, Singapore, and South America.

In short, if sailing from outside North America, then the drinking age is normally lower.

Drinking in a Port of Call

Once you are in a port and off the ship, the cruise line’s rules no longer apply to you. Instead, you are under the laws and regulations of that country. Therefore, if the country’s legal age limit is 18 to consume or buy alcohol, then that’s the rule that applies when ashore — not the cruise ship’s policy. Note that if you are on a cruise line’s private island, even if it is in a country with a lower drinking age, then the cruise line’s rules on drinking will apply.

For those under 21, you’ll be happy to know that the legal drinking age throughout the Caribbean is 18 years or under. In addition, a couple of countries have drinking limits of 16.

Drinking Age for Selected Countries

  • Antigua: 16 years old
  • Bahamas: 18 years old
  • Belize: 18 years old
  • Bermuda: 18 years old
  • British Virgin Islands: 18 years old
  • Cayman Islands: 18 years old
  • Haiti: 16 years old
  • Honduras: 18 years old
  • Jamaica: 18 years old
  • Mexico: 18 years old
  • Puerto Rico: 18 years old
  • US Virgin Islands: 18 years old

What if I Am Caught Drinking While Underage?

The rules are very clear about drinking on a cruise and in port. If you are under 21 and sailing from North America, you better wait until you arrive at a port before taking a sip. If you are under 18, then most ports and the cruise ship are off limits.

But what if you decide to sneak a drink anyway?

If you are on the cruise ship, there’s a chance that it could end your trip early. Carnival makes the following statement in its ticket contract:

Guests who attempt to purchase alcohol by using false identification or the Sail & Sign card of a Guest who is twenty-one or older will be deemed in violation of this policy. Any Guest twenty-one or older who attempts to or purchases alcohol for any Guest under twenty-one will also be deemed in violation of this policy. Guest agrees that Carnival has the right to disembark any Guest who violates this policy and as well as any adults traveling with minors who violate this policy or any other shipboard regulation .

While getting kicked off the ship may be a possibility, we find it unlikely. That’s not to suggest that you try and test your luck.

If you are caught drinking underage while in port, you are subject to the laws of that country. Depending on the country, that could mean serious legal issues at worst. At best, it could make you sweat getting back to the ship in time for departure.

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Virgin Voyages

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.
