A COMPLETE TRAVEL GUIDE TO BHUJ, THE GATEWAY TO THE RANN OF KUTCH

Bhuj, the erstwhile capital of the princely state of Kutch was known for its wealth that came from sea-trade, and for the bartering of African slaves for Indian textiles. Today, the town doesn’t allure travellers as much as the Rann of Kutch does. The Rann (translating to Salt Marsh) has been hogging the spotlight, and Bhuj, its nearest town, is merely seen as a stopover on the way to the Rann Utsav, a Gujarat Tourism initiative that takes place between November and February, when the wetland dries up, leaving a vast expanse of white salt flats behind.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO BHUJ

If you’re adventurous, you can seriously consider a road trip from Mumbai to Bhuj , or from anywhere in India to Bhuj for that matter. The roads in Gujarat are excellent and make for a very enjoyable drive. You could also hop on a flight as the nearest airport to Bhuj is 4 kms away. Alternatively, you can get on a bus to any city in Gujarat and then change buses to get to Bhuj – there is no shortage of them. Lastly, if you choose to travel by train, it is most convenient to get a train to Bhuj from Mumbai and the journey lasts around 15 hours – just a little less than that of a road trip.

I should mention though, that getting around once you’re *in* Bhuj is no piece of cake. The public transport facilities are not developed, there are little-to-no self-drive vehicles and you would need to rely on your hotel receptionist to book you a cab everywhere. This is why doing a road trip and having your vehicle with you makes the most sense – as many of the places worth seeing in Bhuj are off the beaten track.

EXPLORE BHUJ AND ITS SURROUNDING HANDICRAFT VILLAGES

Bhuj is an enchanting town and is an extremely affordable backpacker destination in India. Magnificent palaces, noisy marketplaces, beautiful architectural treasures and world-class textiles and handicrafts make it a fascinating place to spend a couple of days. While most of Bhuj had been destroyed in the massive earthquake of 2001, much of it has been rebuilt – the scars still visible; though much has been lost, too.

Like the rest of Gujarat, Bhuj is a vegetarian town. It is a comfortable place to park your bags and it offers plush accommodation on a budget as you explore the colourful villages surrounding it. I stayed at Hotel Kutch Desert , which was the first place we walked in to at 11:30 PM, that luckily turned out to be pretty good. If you’re a digital nomad, you’ll find there to be excellent connectivity to work in Bhuj, but no cafes or restaurants where you can spend the day working out of – that culture is alien here.

6 INTERESTING THINGS TO DO IN BHUJ

GET A FEEL OF THE LOCAL MARKET – Watching people go about their day in a new place is something I can do for hours! We walked around the main market one morning and stopped for breakfast at Gayatri Fast Food, a no-frills place with upstairs open-air seating from where we could watch the market scenes unfold below.

VISIT AINA MAHAL AND PRAG MAHAL – The two ancient palaces in one compound are the jewels of Bhuj and rightfully so! The Prag Mahal looks like it was shipped here in its entirety from Europe – with its Neo-Gothic architecture, 150-foot tall clock tower, elaborate pillars and gold-gilded carvings depicting everything from tiny squirrels to life-size men holding up the ceiling. I can bet that at every turn, you will stop, open-mouthed to stare at the opulence of this magnificent palace, built by Rao Pragmaji way back in 1838! I can only imagine how much more lavish it must have seemed back then in the 19 th century when Col Henry Wilkins was paid a whopping 31 lakhs to design at that time. Entry to Prag Mahal costs Rs. 20 per person with mobile photography allowed. Bringing professional photography equipment is chargeable.

Aina Mahal, the older of the two palaces, looks even more forlorn but doesn’t lack in wealth. Built by Maharaja Rao Lakhpatji, it is more like a museum than a palace. The doors have carvings made with ivory and mirrors of every shape and size stretch from wall to wall, in gold frames. You’ll see arms and ammunition, paintings, coins, hookah equipment and more as you walk from room to room. Entry to the Aina Mahal is Rs. 20 per person and the charge for phone photography is Rs. 50. The staff is extremely alert and follows you around to ensure you don’t click a single photograph without buying a photography pass – and if you do, they will impose a fine you of Rs. 500.

Both these palaces in Bhuj have, what seems like a shadow of gloom cast over them, perhaps due to being at the mercy of man and nature… and due to the descent from the height of power to being a mere tourist attraction today. The palaces can be visited at leisure in one morning itself.

RAMKUND STEPWELL – Not really worth stopping to see, but I did so just to compare it with the step-wells in Hampi and Jodhpur . The Ramkund Stepwell in Bhuj is not very well maintained and you could pop in and out in less than 15 minutes. It seems to be more of a hangout spot among local youth and a place for pre-wedding photo shoots (there was one going on when I was there!) than a tourist attraction in Bhuj.

SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE – I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy this temple as much as I did, but you can’t deny the tranquillity and grandeur of the place. Visit this stunning white marble temple a little before sunset and watch as it changes colours from blush pink to flaming orange as the sun sets, while you enjoy the strong breeze. Whether or not you like visiting religious places in India, I’d suggest visiting this one because of its beauty and good vibrations!

VISIT THE FAMOUS HANDICRAFT VILLAGES OF BHUJ – If you go to Bhuj and don’t explore a few of the handicraft villages, you’re missing out! I’m no shopper myself, but I simply couldn’t resist buying a couple of leather bags, some key chains, gorgeous shawls and more – made by local artisans and sold at unbeatable prices. Kutch is known around the world for its handicrafts, and watching the craftsmen at work in Bhujodi Village is both enlightening and fascinating.

Bhujodi has smaller versions of the Red Fort (called ‘Yellow Fort’ here), the Parliament and a statue of Gandhi – all of which are found in Delhi. One section of the massive arena features around 30 little huts that the government gives to 30 different craftsmen every month and it truly is a shoppers’ paradise as you hop from hut to hut chatting with craftsmen, browsing through their wares and being oh-so-tempted! I’d also highly recommend the Khamir Craft Resource Centre for the ingenious, beautiful products they make and sell from scarves to shoes and from books to bags and purses made of recycled plastic! They also have handicraft workshops that you need to book in advance for. Lastly, I had read about the village of Nirona and drove all the way there but it seemed pretty much deserted.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THE FOOD – There’s very little said about the food in Bhuj, but I totally enjoyed whatever I tried. The Puri Shak at Gayatri Puri Centre is delicious, try the Dabeli at Kishan Dabeli stall and the Gujarati Thali at Umayiji Dining Hall. Since there’s no information about the best food in Bhuj, these are just places I happened to eat at and really enjoyed – I’m sure there are better options available.

Bhuj is a town in Kachchh (Kutch) district of Gujarat, located 55 to 60 km North-West of Gandhidham city. Bhuj is the capital of Kutch district and an interesting tourist destination . Bhuj is an ideal starting point to visit the Rann of Kutch.

Bhuj connects us to a range of civilizations and important events in history through prehistoric archaeological findings of the Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan civilization), places associated with the Mahabharata and Alexander the Great’s march into India and tombs, palaces and other buildings from the rule of the Naga chiefs, the Jadeja Rajputs, the Gujarat Sultans and the British Raj.

Tourist Attractions

Bhuj is well-known for handicrafts, temples and palaces built in the traditional Kutchi style. Various interesting places to visit in Bhuj are Cenotaphs Complex (Royal Chhatardis), Kutch Museum, Kera, Prag Mahal, Aina Mahal Palace, Hamirsar Lake, Ramkund Stepwell, Swaminarayan Temple, Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan and Sharad Baug Palace .

Kutch Museum

The Kuchch Museum, formerly known as the Ferguson Museum (named after its founder Sir James Ferguson, Governor of Mumbai during the rule of the British), was built in 1877 and has a good collection of artifacts, depicting the history and culture of Bhuj and its surroundings. It is also the oldest Museum in the state of Gujarat.

The museum is built in Italian style and is located near the banks of the Hamirsar Lake. The museum has a large collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions, various archaeological objects, arms and specimens of various crafts of the Kutch region.

Aina Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors is surrounded by a small, fortified courtyard built in the 18th century. It is located in the old part of the city. It is an important tourist spot and houses a museum within it.

The Hall of Mirrors and the Pleasure Pool within this palace makes it an important sightseeing destination. Aina Mahal is a unique example of an Indian palace built in the mid-eighteenth century with European influence.

Cenotaphs Complex (Royal Chhatardis)

About a 20-minute walk southwest of Hamirsar lake, through open areas that no longer seem like you’re in the city, are the royal cenotaphs. The Cenotaphs Complex or Chattardi was built of red stones. These tombs were ruined by the successive earthquakes in 1819. The complex built for Rao Lakha in 1770, is one of the largest and finest complex. This complex is in the shape of a polygon with balconies and an intricately carved roof. It contains carved wall panels and beautiful statues of deities. Some other cenotaphs belongs to Rao Rayadhan, Rao Desai and Rao Pragmal. These cenotaphs served as memorial grounds for the royal family.

Kera (22 Km south of Bhuj) is mainly known due to the 10th century old temple of Lord Shiva. This temple was damaged in the earthquake of 1819. In its original form this temple must be very beautiful as it can be seen from the remains of this temple. The Fort of Kapilkot, also in a damaged state, is next to the temple.

Prag Mahal was constructed by Rao Pragmalji II (1838-76 AD). Rao Pragmalji appointed a famous architect, Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins to design Prag Mahal, who had earlier designed Deccan College, Sasoon Hospital, Ohel David Synagogue. Prag Mahal took about 10 years to get built at the cost of 20 lakh rupees at that time.

Inside the palace, you can visit the main palace halls as well as climb stairs of the 45m bell tower for an exhilarating view of the city. In the courtyard behind the palace, there is a small Hindu temple with very nicely carved stonework; the caretaker is sometimes available for more information.

Sharad Baug Palace

Sharad Baug Palace, the Maharao’s last residence before his death in 1891 is set in very pleasant gardens. Exhibits include hunting trophies, furniture, exotic ornaments.

Sharad Baug is closed on Fridays. Visit Timings are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

As someone  leading a busy life while living in Mumbai, I often find myself feeling the need to escape from my hectic and monotonous routine. And a  few weeks back, while at a friend’s birthday party, I got just the inspiration I needed for my next trip. I was sitting with my friends and the conversation suddenly shifted to the sharing of incredible travel experiences. One of my friends, who had recently travelled to Gujarat, started narrating his experiences, which focused especially on some unique places to visit in Bhuj. As he spoke more and more about the splendid desert, centuries-old buildings, and a deep sense of serenity, I felt the urge to plan a trip to the city rising to a crescendo.

I came back home and spent the whole night reading several blogs and looking at plenty of images of this fantastic tourist location in India. I found out that Bhuj connects people to a variety of civilizations and allows you to experience the ancient archaeological remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization. Moreover, there are places associated with the Mahabharata, and Alexander the Great. Needless to say, by the break of dawn – enamoured with the promises of this ancient city – I knew that Bhuj simply had to be my next vacation spot.

The following day, on my way back from the morning walk, I couldn’t resist entering Bandra Station. I wanted to find details of trains that connected Mumbai with Bhuj as my innate spontaneity was urging me to set off on this trip as soon as possible.  

After checking the availability of seats, I managed to book a ticket on an afternoon train set to depart the coming weekend. Soon, but after a wait longer than I would have liked, the day of my travel arrived and with great enthusiasm, I boarded the train to Bhuj. The train reached its destination the next day around 8 a.m. I had already booked a taxi in advance. Hence, a chauffeur-driven car was waiting for me at the railway station, and the city being small, I reached the hotel in 15 minutes. Once there, I went to my pre-booked room, and luckily, my first thought as I walked in was ‘it is well worth the money.’ 

After unwinding with a quick shower, I went down to hunt for a guide to help me get to the best temples, hills, as well as the famous Harmirsar Lake. My friend had suggested that I hire a local guide, and I quite liked his idea that when you interact with the local people, you have a much more holistic experience in terms of getting to know about the place, its history, food, and festivals. 

And now that I’ve explored almost every nook of Bhuj, with the help of this article, I will arm you with all the information you need regarding the best places to visit in Bhuj for a fruitful and fulfilling journey!

2. Aina Mahal

One of the most famous historical places to visit in Bhuj, Aina Mahal was Maharao Lakhpatji’s palace. As its name suggests, it is a palace of mirrors, with its Kutchi style of architecture taking it to the next level.

The main attraction of this palace for tourists it that it has glass exhibits on its walls, pillars, windows and ceilings. This makes the surroundings shine, creating a magical glittering effect. If you are an art lover or history buff, you should definitely visit this place once.

This wildlife sanctuary has a lot of rare species of animals. If you visit this place, you could be lucky enough to see Indian porcupines, greater flamingos, spiny-tailed lizards, Indian cormorants and black-necked storks. 

Owing to the intensity of the desert sun, this is a perfect place to visit in winters for all tourists and travellers.

History of Bhujia Fort

Construction and purpose.

Bhujia Fort traces its origins to the visionary leadership of Jadeja Chiefs. The foundation was laid by Rao Godji I (1715–1718), the ruler of the Kingdom of Kutch. Initially conceived as a defensive structure for the city, the fort’s construction began under Rao Godji I but saw significant progress during the rule of his son, Deshalji I (1718–1741). The strategic location atop Bhujia Hill fortified the capital, Bhuj, witnessing six major battles between 1700 and 1800 AD.

The fort played a crucial role in the defense of Kutch against external invasions. Notably, during the early reign of Deshalji I, Sher Buland Khan, the Mughal Viceroy of Gujarat, invaded Kutch. The fort’s gate was ingeniously opened by a group of Naga Bawas, facilitating a turning point in the battle. Post-independence, the fort came under British control in 1819 and later housed the Indian Army until 2001.

History of Bhuj Kutch

Bhuj, a city in the district of Kutch, was an old walled city in the past. Bhuj came in limelight on the global map, due to the 2001 Gujarat Earthquake that tore down most of the city.

Thanks to the many humanitarian organizations and NGOs, Bhuj Kutch rose from the ashes. Kutch now hosts one of the longest festivals in India – The Rann Utsav in the White Desert. Bhuj acts as a gateway to the Rann Utsav and the Great Rann of Kutch.

In spite of being a city in the district of Kutch, Bhuj is referred to as Bhuj Kutch or Kutch Bhuj by travellers. 

Bhuj is full of history, architecture, grandeur, colourful bazaars and delicious food. Visitors can spend hours in the intricate streets and alleys which have the historical glory standing strong. There are walls within walls, old palaces, temples, intricately carved step-wells and lakes making Bhuj a must-visit place before heading to Rann Utsav.

While Bhuj keeps adding tourist places in Bhuj every few years, the following list is based on the places I have been to in recent years. These are the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj and Aina Mahal, Bhuj

Two palaces ( or the remains of palaces) stand adjacent to each other – The Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal. One can see the impact of the devastating earthquake on the exterior structures of both these palaces.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj is also known as the Bhuj Palace . Prag Mahal is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj. The palace survived the impact, which was earlier built in a lavish Italian gothic style. The palace has a lavish Durbar hall, with large pillars, huge chandeliers and classic marble statues, all defining the opulence of the bygone era.

Other important parts of the palace include Corinthian pillars, carved doorways, broad window boxes and Jali work representing European flora and fauna. Do climb the stairs to reach the bell tower for an exhilarating view of the city and Bhujia Hills.

Aina Mahal literally means the ‘Palace of Mirrors’ . As soon as one enters the palace, one can see an exhibit on a 15 m long scroll that depicts the Royal Procession of Maharao Shri Pragmalji Bahadur.

The palace also has exhibits that include paintings, jewelled swords, ivory inlaid doors, photographs, royal possessions and the finest samples of the Kutch embroidery.

It has countless artefacts ornamented with Venetian-style chandeliers, silver objects and clocks make it an interesting sightseeing place in Bhuj.

Kutch Museum

Kutch is also written as Kachchh. Bhuj has a city museum that houses some very rare idols and artefacts. It is one of the oldest museums in the state of Gujarat and has collections of coins and tribal art and craft which includes embroidery, mirror work, thread work and metalwork. It also has collections of inscriptions and information about the tribal community of Gujarat.

All the labels and information in the museum is bilingual – English and the regional language Gujarati for ease of understanding.

Hamirsar Lake

Come out of the Kutch museum to witness the glory of migratory birds in the Hamirsar lake which is within walking distance from each other. The lake is a manmade lake built and derives its name from the yesteryear ruler – Hamir Rao.

The lake was built in order to cater to the domestic needs of Bhuj city and is adorned with cenotaphs. Unfortunately, the cenotaphs haven’t survived the earthquake impacts but can still see some remains and the Greater Cormorants basking in the sun’s glory.

Hamirsar lake is a good place for a walk in the evening and you can find some local vendors selling snacks. Winter mornings can be really special as you can spot local as well as migratory birds like Greater flamingos, Pelicans, Black-winged stilt, etc. Hamirsar Lake is one of the best places to visit in Bhuj.

Chattardi Bhuj

The construction of cenotaphs or chhatris was done by the Royal families of erstwhile kingdoms in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Indore , Madhya Pradesh. These umbrella-shaped dome structures were built in memory of a royal family member and do not contain the mortal remains. 

Chattardi in Bhuj is a cenotaph’s complex made of red stone. It is one of the rarest monuments existing in India as all of the tombs here are made out of Red stones.

Each tomb is different in size, shape and design with intricately carved walls and roof. Floral designs are the most common patterns found on these tombstones. Apart from floral patterns, hexagons, octagons and stripe patterns can also be seen across the walls of the structure.

Although many movies have been shot here and Chattardi has shot to fame, visiting this place will transform you into a different world altogether. Unlike other tourists, I visited this place with a guide and got amazing information about each structure’s significance. This is definitely a place to visit in Bhuj .

Swaminarayan Temple, Bhuj

The divinity of the temple can be proved during the Gujarat Earthquake of 2001. The earthquake destroyed one side of the temple facing north which was built by Lord Shree Swaminarayan . Miraculously the divine idols remained as they were, without any damage whatsoever.

It was decided that the idols would be housed inside a new grand temple. A huge temple was constructed using traditional Vedic architectural methods, on the banks of Hamirsar Lake.

Since its first brick installation ceremony on 7 May 2003, it has taken 7 years for its completion. Based on a grand podium, the new temple faces East and is constructed mainly with pure high-quality marble. It has intricate wooden carvings coated with vibrant colours that characterize this temple.

Ram Dhun temple and Ram Kund

Ram Kund is a stepwell, designed like a small reservoir in which rainwater used to be collected for drinking purposes in the past. Ram Kund is located near the Prag Mahal while on the way to the Kutch Museum, just behind the Ram Dhun Temple.

After walking along the water, pray your respects to the carvings of characters from the Ramayana, such as Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman, along with the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu over the walls in Ram Dhun temple

Bhujia Hills

The Bhujia Hill Fort lies on the outskirts of Bhuj .

Originally built as a safe house and to store defence artillery during battle, the fort was later used by the Indian Army to store ammunition. It is now barren with only a temple at the top and a proposed memorial park at the foothills of the hill.

In winters you can trek to the top of the hills for breathtaking, panoramic views of  Bhuj city. There are some steep steps on a set trail from the parking to the fort. If you are fit and want to sweat it out, Bhujia hills could be included in your list.

Vande Mataram Memorial Park Bhuj

The latest attraction added in Bhuj is the Vande Mataram Memorial Park. the Memorial Park beautifully tells the intriguing tale of India’s freedom struggle through 13 episodes – from the revolt of 1857 right up to the country’s Independence in 1947. Build in 4-D technology, this memorial aims to abide by the most exigent moment of India’s freedom struggle.

Spread across 12 acres of land, the memorial was painstakingly built over 4 years. The primary structure is modelled like the Sansad Bhavan. Indian parliament and India Gate are some of the most popular places to see in Vande Mataram memorial park .

Vande Mataram memorial park entry fee: Rs. 200 per adult, Senior Citizen: Rs. 50, Kids below 10 years: Rs. 50

Timings of Vande Mataram memorial park: 10 am to 7 pm. It is closed on Mondays.

Going to Bhuj and not shopping is like committing a crime. Shopping in Bhuj and around for Kutch arts and crafts is a must and one of the best tourist places in Bhuj. Depending upon whether you are spending one day in Bhuj, two days in Bhuj or more, shopping can vary. There are many tourists who only tour the art and crafts scene in Kutch villages. Shopping in Bhuj city

If you do not feel up to driving out of town to Bhujodi village, there is a street in the middle of the city on station road, where you can shop for artefacts, and textiles and even customize a nameplate for yourself in mirror and mud work. There is no particular name to the street but it is the one near Rajgulab shopping centre.

Bhujodi is a traditional crafts village which is situated about 12 km from Bhuj. The village is over 500 years old and is popular as the weaver village as the 1200 families residing here have looms in their house. Shopping in Bhujodi is probably one of the best places to visit in Bhuj Kutch!

Brightly coloured stoles, kurtas, shawls adorned on the walls of each house welcome everyone in Bhujodi. These are handwoven and hand embroidered and beautified with silk threads and mirror work in intricate designs. Other commonly seen textile products consist of bed sheets, the regional outfits called chaniya choli and dupatta .

Spend time around the villages in Kutch to explore the art and craft which is unique, vibrant and mind-blowing. Some of the options are:

Bhuj Kutch famous food | Must try street food in Bhuj

While common Gujarati snacks that are found all over Gujarat are found here such Sev Khamni, Puri Shak, Dhokla, Khaman, etc. there are special dishes that have made a mark. Bhuj is a paradise for street food and has many options to choose from.

Dabeli is a popular street food that originated in Kutch. Hence it is also known as Kutchi or Kacchi Dabeli! Kutchi dabeli is a must-try food in Bhuj that has a sweet, hot and tangy masala and is served in Bun bread.

If you want to indulge in a vegetarian thali (assortment of dishes arranged as a platter for lunch or dinner) I would highly recommend Umiyaji Dining Hall or Ashapura dining hall. Most hotels in Bhuj, also have a restaurant so that is also a good option to wind up the day with.

This is a food souvenir to take back home from Bhuj Kutch. Combining the choicest rose petals and dry fruits Gulab Pak is a delicately flavourful, luxurious sweet. Khavda is the shop that specializes in this dessert.

Best time to visit Bhuj

Bhuj in Kutch district is basically a desert and gets super hot in summer. The best time to visit Bhuj is between the months of December to March. It is also the same time when the White Desert Festival or Rann Utsav is organized.

Weather: Winter temperatures are 25 ℃ during the day and 8-10℃ at night with chilly winds. The summer temperatures hover around 50 ℃.

I have heard of the Rann Utsav as one of the must attend experiences and seems like spending 2 days in Bhuj is a great idea. With old palaces, temples, carved stepwells, Kutch seems to be soaked in a historical extravaganza. Have been always a fan of mirror and thread work colorful attires from this beautiful part of India and I can only imagine the how fascinating it would be to shop at Bhujodi village.
