James Arthur, the X-Factor winning pop and R&B singer, best known for his breakthrough single “Impossible”, was born March 2, 1988 in Middlesbrough, England, UK.

Born to a former fashion model and a former DJ and drummer, James Arthur was raised in Redcar, North Yorkshire until the age of nine. Alongside his mother and step-father, Arthur then moved to Bahrain and studied at the local British School of Bahrain before moving back to Redcar when he was 14. Prior to auditioning for a slot on the X Factor James Arthur played in a number of alternative and indie bands including the progressive Moonlight Drive from 2005, the alternative-rock groups Cue the Drama and Save Arcade, and the indie pop/rock band Emerald Skye. Arthur had also uploaded a stream of songs to his SoundCloud page in a collection entitled “Sins by the Sea”, as well as performing in The James Arthur Band, which incorporated R&B, soul and hip-hop influences.

At his X Factor audition in Newcastle, UK, the young musician sung judge Tulisa Contostavlos’ single “Young” and was put through to the bootcamp stage, mentored by Nicole Scherzinger. After singing Take That’s “A Million Love Songs” and Bonnie Hathaway’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, Arthur advanced to the live shows, where he ultimately won the final with 53% of the vote. James’ winner’s song, Shontelle’s “Impossible”, became the fastest-selling winner’s single to date and topped the UK Singles Chart in its first week. The singer’s subsequent single “You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Loves You” was released in August 2013, debuted at No. 2 behind Lorde’s single “Royals”, and was taken from Arthur’s debut self-titled album.

“James Arthur”, released in November 2013, debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, aided by the further singles “Get Down” and “Recovery”. After promoting his debut with the James Arthur Tour, a 37-date tour across Europe, the singer released a the mixtape “All the World’s a Stage”, and performed at 2014's V Festival.

Live reviews

I first saw James during his audition for the 2012 X Factor, his raw emotion and beautiful voice totally captivated me... Gary's comment said it all, "If anyone dares touch what you do, cuz it's so good!" I watched every week as he blew the competition away and cried when he won... I have never looked back! I forced myself to learn social media,(was the first American fan on Twitter) so I could track his career and most importantly see when he would be coming to America... Ended up making a Facebook page "James Arthur the U.S Wants U" 2 years in because I wanted to help speed things up! Little did I know it would take this long!

A JArmy sister, I had helped finance her daughters beauty pageant, saw how I always said, "Where is my Fairy Godmother, I wanna go!" Every time I watched all the Hub-bub over a concert in the UK! She wrote to tell me if I could get a plane over, she had a place to stay and a ticket! I booked a plane ticket! It was a once in a lifetime event and was more than I had hoped for, words could not describe him live!

James is not only the most prolific singer/songwriter that I heard in decades but the emotion and soul he puts into his music is phenomenal! Over the past 5 years, his music has helped me through the deaths of my husband and father and the disappearance of my brother... besides my daughter, the last 3 remaining people close to me!

James has a way to pull the bad feeling out and heal the soul! AND on top of all that, incredibly, he is the sweetest, kind and caring person you could want to meet (James, please never lose that and you could "turn the world around!"- Just one of the hundreds of songs he has written.)

I am beyond words that he is finally going to start touring here! It feels like I have waited for this forever! I am taking my good friend who also is a major fan and my only daughter to see him in Weatfield, Aug. 25th.. I am so excited and cannot wait to see him again! There has never been a doubt in my mind that Americans will fall in love with his amazing talent!

Taking the X-Factor crown in 2012, saw James Arthur ascend into the charts with his first single “Impossible” (a cover of Shontelle’s hit) debuting at number one. Having been in numerous local alternative rock bands and not really taking off and issues regarding his personal life spurred Arthur to enter the competition which saw him soar through the show, winning the hearts of the British public with irresistibly smooth and soulful, R&B vocals. His debut album “Impossible” achieved number one in the UK, going double platinum and reaching similar successes in Europe. His follow-up single “You’re Nobody Until Somebody Loves You” defined and solidified Arthur’s distinctive style.

The X-Factor was just a small insight into his live persona. When he steps on stage he exudes confidence as he effortlessly sings “Get Down” accompanied by a full band and backing singers as he reaches out to the crowd. He really knows how to work the crowd as he interacts with them making full use of his natural charisma. The crowd is filled with hundreds of adoring fans ranging from all ages, who show banners of support and waving their arms from side to side. “Recovery” sees a chorus of voices sing along in unison as Arthur strips it down. “Impossible” gets the biggest reaction as he picks up the electric guitar, letting the crowd sing the entire first verse and Arthur is overwhelmed by the reaction. With incredible soulful vocals mastered to perfection, you can guarantee a heart-warming performance with energy in abundance every time from James Arthur.

X Factor champion turned tearaway, there were always questions as to whether a reality television show was the best platform for James Arthur to display his alt-pop sounds. He showed real promise during the show adapting his raspy vocal to genres including dance, dubstep and rock. Many consider his departure from the Syco label to be the making of him as it once again handed James the reigns regarding his creative outlook.

He definitely seems a lot more at ease when performing live and being able to play in the way in which he enjoys. The setup could be described as anything but pop, the man himself arriving in all black and taking centre stage with his acoustic guitar and several accompanying musicians. They run through a selection of his best material which showcases both the unusual vocal and his creativity as a musician. A cover of Marvin Gaye's has been reimagined as a rock ditty and works really well leading into 'Impossible' which evokes mass singalong. Arthur has not dismissed his X factor roots, but he seems to be in a better place now when looking to move forward.

It was incredible! One of the best concerts I've ever seen. James really knows how to cheer up the fans. There was always an amazing energy between him and the crowd, and the smalk talks between songs were really funny and made me feel more "close" to him and understand a little bit more what he felt when writting the songs (like the anxiety issues that I also have) and he made me cry a little bit on Quite Miss Home (I promised myself that would not cry). The songs list was THE BEST, I wasn't expecting the "rock" vibe in some of the songs but it was incredible and James killed it on the guitar.

Also, the singers that came first (Jamie Grey and Emily Burns) were amazing and really cool and sweet. I had an awesome night and hope to see him again because his voice is even better on live!

What can I say James Arthur smashes it..From start to finish he kept us captivated, sung his heart out and left us begging for more. I’m an emotional wreck and I can’t wait til I can see him again....

The singing was amazing the heart was amazing and what a brilliant entertainer... James is the real deal and what you see is what you get... He wears his heart on his sleeve and I felt like I was on stage with him living his dream and every song is heartfelt and real...

Long live King Arthur and I hope he goes on to write songs forever... I was expecting to have an amazing night but I was blown away by how good he actually is and my daughter ( a sceptic ) who came with me has been converted... James Arthur fans for life...

Went with my partner she's the big fan I like and totally appreciate his music but it's not what I generally pick on Spotify.

Saying that absolutely fantastic performance he gave it his all and he was funny and engaging with the crowd. The stage was a bit basic but feel he didn't need elaborate lights and smoke to put on a great performance. The sound was great we had seats up near the back of the venue but still had a clear good view of the whole stage. Would recommend him to any fan and anyone who is into East listening music.

Absolutely amazing show at the BIC last night, I saw James Arthur a couple of years ago at the same venue and enjoyed it enough to go again last night but this time was so much better. James interacted with the audience 100%, he seemed more relaxed than last time and sang perfectly!! The BIC is great as it’s easy to get to by car/train, there were no ques, clean loo’s which is always a bonus and not stupidly priced for a beer!! Had an amazing night..thank you!

julie-stewart-3’s profile image

Very good; however and this is a rhetorical question

1. Why did 25% of the audience only watch the concert whilst looking at the screens on their phones ?

2. Why some people act without any regard for the fact that in trying to get the best video they block all vision of 3 people in the row behind ?

Sorry rant over, James was very good a 1 1/2 hour set best song “Sun Comes Up”

Charlotte O C was also excellent highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic. JAmes Arthur did not disappoint. He sang songs from his old and new albums and included the old favourites. He is an inspiration to many people who suffer with anxiety and depression and was not afraid to speak about it. He was funny a real presence on stage. He has a great voice and an extraordinary talent . Well done JAmes you did yourself proud I was honoured to come and watch you sing m. Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant. Could have watched him for hours. He thoroughly throws himself into it with enthusiasm and humour. The band were amazing too. Please let's have more dates this year. This is my 3rd time to see him and most definitely won't be my last. I have been to gigs for the past 30 years including Bowie, Boomtown Rats, The Script, Eminem, Enrique and he is BY FAR the best.

As well as these extra dates, James previously announced a huge homecoming gig, which will be taking place at Middlesbrough Riverside Stadium on Saturday 8th June 2024, welcoming guests McFly and Lauran Hibberd.

Speaking about the exciting news, James said: "It's truly unbelievable. I don't think that I can put it into words. As someone who came to the Riverside as a young lad with a season ticket and walked through the turnstiles, it’s just crazy to think that people are going to be walking through the turnstiles to watch me perform. It’s very much like the end of a movie, a full circle moment.

"It has been bit of a pipe dream of mine to play my team’s ground; I'm really honoured."

The singer also shared a video on Instagram where he can be seen visiting the stadium, cut with his younger-self also visiting the football ground.

James announced his tour last year on social media, telling his fans: 'These are the dates for the UK/EU leg of the Bitter Sweet Love world tour - can’t wait for you all to see the show ❤️ Everyone who pre-orders the fifth album from my official store before 3PM BST this Tuesday will receive access to my EU/UK tour pre-sale! How the Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt Became a Chronicler of Black Jazz History

Inspired by the drummer Arthur Taylor’s “Notes and Tones” collection of interviews with fellow musicians, Pelt started his own book series, “Griot.”

A person with a goatee, in a dark pinstripe suit with a red pocket square in front of a yellow wall.

By Hank Shteamer

The trumpeter Jeremy Pelt was sitting on his couch, browsing YouTube, when he decided to become an author.

It was 2018, and Pelt, by then a fixture on the New York jazz scene for two decades, came across a 1994 interview with the jazz drumming great Arthur Taylor , conducted by a fellow percussionist, Warren Smith. “It could have been ‘Batman,’ or something,” Pelt recalled during a recent conversation in his Harlem apartment. “It was like an hour and 45 minutes, I remember, and I just was transfixed the whole time.”

Pelt was especially taken with a section where Taylor discussed “Notes and Tones,” his landmark book of musician-to-musician interviews, first self-published in 1977 and later reissued more widely. In it, giants like Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Max Roach spoke with often bracing candor about race, the music business, their feelings about the term “jazz” and more. Pelt had first come across the book more than 20 years earlier at the Berklee College of Music library.

“This is way before internet and all that,” he said, so listeners had no idea what their musical heroes’ “comportment was, how they sounded, anything. So what you have is these words that gave you this peek into their personality.”

Pelt often found himself wishing for a sequel. Taylor noted in the 1993 paperback edition that he had recorded more than 200 interviews and intended to publish a follow-up; two years later, he died at 65 . Watching the conversation between Taylor and Smith, Pelt made a resolution: “After wondering how come somebody hasn’t done such and such, I said, you know what? I’m going to go ahead and do it.”

He started conducting interviews with elders, peers and younger artists, accelerating during the pandemic, when it was easy to reach musicians via Zoom. In 2021, he self-published the first volume of “Griot,” settling on that title after seeing the term — meaning a West African storyteller-musician who passes down the oral history of a tribe — in an old social-media handle used by the bassist Buster Williams. “I looked it up, and that’s when it hit me,” Pelt, 47, said. “That’s exactly what this project is, is really passing down the culture. It’s these stories.”

The book features 15 conversations with musicians across generations: Warren Smith, now 89, whom Pelt chose as his first subject after watching his interview with Taylor, as well as Wynton Marsalis, Terri Lyne Carrington and Robert Glasper. Since then, Pelt has issued another three books, self-published annually through his Peltjazz imprint in runs of about 200. (Vol. IV arrived in February.) Taken together, the “Griot” books, available in the United States only through Pelt’s website and mailed out personally by the author, read like a secret history of the jazz life from bebop to Black Lives Matter.

Jazz literature is filled with artist interviews conducted by journalists and critics, but examples of musicians speaking with their peers on the record are relatively rare. As the bassist William Parker said in 2022 — speaking about how “Notes and Tones” had inspired “Conversations,” his own continuing series of books featuring interviews with fellow artists — “when musicians talk to musicians, they speak differently.”

For Pelt, that camaraderie was key. At the outset of the “Griot” project, he said, it was clear “what was needed to really do something like that was a significant level of trust from musician to musician,” something he had built up across his 20 years on the scene, working with esteemed veterans such as Cedar Walton, Louis Hayes and James Moody, and consistently leading his own bands. (His latest album, “Tomorrow’s Another Day,” came out in March.)

When Pelt selects his subjects, he makes a point of reserving space for “older Black musicians that had not had a lot of ink” — he referred to them as “the soldiers of this music” — who appear alongside more well-known names such as Esperanza Spalding, Christian McBride and Wayne Shorter. Some of the books’ most revelatory conversations are with underrecognized mainstays of the scene, including the multi-instrumentalist Earl McIntyre, the trumpeter Kamau Adilifu (a.k.a. Charles Sullivan) and the tuba player Bob Stewart.

Stewart, 79, said in a phone interview that he was honored to be included among the “Griot” ranks. “I take it as a badge of courage somebody just handed me,” he said. “Because it’s what I’ve been doing my entire last 60 years, teaching school and playing professionally and then taking my playing and passing it back on to students that are now young players.”

The saxophonist and singer Camille Thurman, 37, featured in the third “Griot” book, said Pelt has captured “a lot of good wisdom.” “It’s one thing when somebody’s asking questions based off of what they’ve seen from the outside, or what they’ve seen put together nice and neat on a piece of paper,” she added. “When musicians come together and talk, there’s something that’s really deep about it.”

Pelt’s interviews take many paths, but one question is a constant, often eliciting passionate responses: “What is the significance of being a Black jazz musician?” In Vol. IV, the pianist Eric Reed answered, definitively, “You don’t have jazz music without Black people.” In Vol. III, the harpist Brandee Younger replied, “I think that in this art form, it’s significant because we as a people created the music. So it’s important that we not be erased from it.”

As in the original “Notes and Tones,” racism is a frequent theme, whether it’s the 89-year-old saxophonist George Coleman recalling being turned away from a Maryland diner during the Jim Crow era or the 25-year-old saxophonist Isaiah Collier reflecting on what he called the “modern lynchings” of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor and others.

Pelt said he knew from the outset that his series, like Taylor’s book, would feature exclusively Black musicians. Citing the influence of a mother who assigned him extracurricular Black history homework growing up and grandparents who recorded and preserved their own oral histories, he said this common factor “had to be the glue that holds it all together.”

In “Griot,” Vol. I, the pianist Bertha Hope, 87, identifies herself as “a proud Black woman in an industry where Black women have had to struggle for a seat at the table.” In a phone interview, she said that sharing her story with Pelt felt validating. “There’s just so many ways we as Black musicians have been overlooked, and we haven’t really been asked what we think about situations or what our lives have been like or what the impact of the industry has been on our career,” she said. “I think it makes a huge difference because he’s part of the music, he’s part of the jazz community, and he also is interviewing people who look like him.”

Pelt realizes the urgency of documenting musicians’ stories while he still can, and regrets that he wasn’t able to include the saxophonist Jimmy Heath and the trumpeter Roy Hargrove before their deaths. He dedicated the second “Griot” title to the pianist Harold Mabern and the drummer Ralph Peterson Jr., both of whom died before their interviews appeared in that volume.

Pelt said he has often been asked why he didn’t simply start a podcast or a YouTube series, rather than going through the effort of publishing a physical product. “I’ve always viewed podcasts as being fleeting,” he said. He gestured around to his library of LPs, which dominated his living room, and said he was looking for that kind of permanence, to create something that, hopefully, “you could always come back to.”

For emphasis, he picked up a copy of a recently published jazz hardback from his coffee table. “There’s no batteries in this,” he said. “It’s not going to die.”
