Cash Back And Points: Rewards Program Agreement: For more information about the Chase Freedom Unlimited rewards program, view the latest Rewards Program Agreement (PDF) Opens in a new window . We will mail your Rewards Program Agreement once your account is established. If you become a Chase Online customer, your Rewards Program Agreement will also be available after logging in to chase.com/ultimaterewards Opens in a new window . Cash Back and Points: "Cash Back rewards" are the rewards you earn under the program. Cash Back rewards are tracked as points and each $1 in Cash Back rewards earned is equal to 100 points. You may simply see "Cash Back" in marketing materials when referring to the rewards you earn. You may also see, "points" or "Ultimate Rewards points" when referring to the points you can use. How you can earn points: You'll earn points on purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds, made with a Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card by you or an authorized user of the account. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won't count and won't earn points: balance transfers, cash advances and other cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. 1.5% Cash Back: You'll earn 1.5% Cash Back rewards for each $1 spent. 3% Cash Back rewards total for each $1 spent on purchases in the following rewards categories: drugstores and dining at restaurants including takeout and eligible delivery services (1.5% additional Cash Back rewards on top of the 1.5% Cash Back rewards earned on each purchase). 5% Cash Back rewards total for each $1 spent on purchases made using your card through Chase Travel (3.5% additional Cash Back rewards on top of the 1.5% Cash Back rewards earned on each purchase). 5% Cash Back at gas stations and grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target) until the earlier of the end of your first 12 months or first $12,000 spent: You'll earn 5% Cash Back rewards total for each $1 spent on purchases in the gas station and grocery store categories (excluding Walmart and Target) made within your first 12 months from account opening, or until you reach $12,000 in combined gas station and grocery store purchases, whichever occurs first (3.5% additional Cash Back rewards on top of the 1.5% Cash Back rewards earned on each purchase). The additional 3.5% Cash Back rewards will appear on your billing statement in a separate line from the base 1.5% Cash Back rewards. 5% total Cash Back on qualifying Lyft rides through 03/2025: You'll earn an additional 3.5% Cash Back for each $1 spent when your card is used for qualifying Lyft products and services purchased through the Lyft mobile application through 03/31/2025 . Qualifying Lyft products and services include rides taken in Classic, Shared, Lux, or XL modes; bike and scooter rides; and subscription and membership products. Purchase of gift cards, car rentals, vehicle service centers, miscellaneous fees, and other Lyft products and services are excluded from this promotion. Future Lyft products or services may not be eligible for additional Cash Back. You may see "5% Cash Back rewards" in marketing materials to refer to the 3.5% Cash Back rewards earned in addition to the 1.5% Cash Back rewards earned on all purchases. The additional 3.5% Cash Back rewards will appear on your billing statement in a separate line from the 1.5% Cash Back rewards. Lyft is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Chase benefits or services. How you can use your points: You can use your points to redeem for any available reward options, including cash, gift cards, travel, and pay with points for products or services made available through the program or directly from third parties. Redemption values for reward options vary. Points expiration/losing points: Your points don't expire as long as your account remains open, however, you will immediately lose all your points if your account status changes, or your account is closed for program misuse, fraudulent activities, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or other reasons described in the terms of the Rewards Program Agreement. Rewards Categories: Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our rewards categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a rewards category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won't qualify for rewards offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a rewards category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that rewards category. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs Opens in a new window .

Qualifying Instacart purchases include only those orders purchased by you, or an authorized user, with a Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card through Instacart.com or the Instacart mobile application (gift cards excluded). Statement credit(s) will post to your account within 48 hours of your qualifying Instacart purchase posting to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. - The Chase Freedom Unlimited® offers an easy-to-earn welcome bonus and an introductory APR promotion to new cardholders.
- In addition to excellent rewards, the card also offers some basic protections for when you’re traveling and shopping, as well as entertainment and dining perks.
- Thoroughly understanding the card’s rewards structure can help you maximize the card’s value.
Chase Freedom Unlimited basics
For new cardholders, 1.5% back on everything bought in the first year on up to $20,000 in spending, which is worth up to $300 on the Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card .
You’ll also get a 0% intro APR for the first 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% to 29.24%. An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days. After that, a fee of either $5 or 5% of each transfer applies. This can give you extra time to pay down one or more large purchases or high-interest credit card debt.
Service and protection benefits
The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers some protections to keep your account safe. For starters, you’ll get zero-liability fraud protection, which means you’ll never be on the hook for unauthorized charges made with your card.
Chase also engages in 24/7 fraud monitoring to prevent such unauthorized charges and will text, email or call you if it detects unusual transaction attempts.
You can also sign up for Chase Credit Journey, the card issuer’s complimentary credit monitoring service, which comes with access to your VantageScore credit score, identity monitoring and personalized insights.
They’re not quite the same: Here’s the difference between a FICO Score and a VantageScore .
Travel benefits
Although the Chase Freedom Unlimited is a cash-back credit card , it offers a handful of benefits that can make it a good travel companion:
- Auto rental collision damage waiver: You can activate this perk on a rental car when you decline the car rental agency’s collision or loss damage waiver coverage, and it will cover costs associated with theft, damage, loss-of-use charges, administrative fees and reasonable and customary towing charges. The coverage is secondary to any personal auto insurance coverage you may have.
- Trip cancellation and interruption insurance: If a trip is canceled or interrupted due to a covered reason, you and your immediate family members may receive reimbursement of up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip worth of non-refundable prepaid travel expenses made with the card. Some of the covered reasons include accidental bodily injury, loss of life, illness, severe weather, terrorist incidents and warnings and more.
- Travel and emergency assistance services: If an emergency occurs while you’re traveling, the card’s benefits administrator can help you arrange medical referrals, transportation, ticket replacement, translation service, prescription assistance and more. Keep in mind, though, that it doesn’t cover the cost of these services.
- Roadside dispatch: If you encounter trouble on the road, the card’s benefits administrator can help arrange standard towing, tire changes, jump starts, lockout service, fuel delivery and standard winching. Note that there is a set price per service.
- Lyft rewards: If you opt for rideshare while traveling, the card offers 5% total cash back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025.
It’s important to note that each of these benefits comes with a set of limitations and exclusions, so it’s crucial to review your cardholder agreement to understand what’s covered and what isn’t.
Shopping benefits
The card also offers a couple of insurance protections that can give you some peace of mind when you shop. It also offers some savings on online grocery purchases:
- Purchase protection: When you purchase an eligible item with your card, you’ll be protected against theft, damage and involuntary and accidental separation from the item for 120 days after the purchase date. You can get up to $500 in coverage per claim and up to $50,000 in total.
- Extended warranty protection: When you buy an eligible item with a manufacturer’s warranty of three years or less, your card will automatically extend that warranty period for an additional year. - Instacart benefit: You can receive a three-month complimentary Instacart+ membership with enrollment, which includes a $0 delivery fee and reduced service charges on eligible orders. As with the card’s travel protections, its shopping protections have some limitations and exclusions to check before you make a purchase.
Entertainment and dining benefits
The card offers a complimentary three-month DoorDash DashPass membership, which includes a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees on eligible orders with DoorDash and Caviar upon enrollment. After the first three months, you’ll receive 50% off your membership for the next nine months. Enrollment ends December 31, 2024.
How to maximize your cash-back value
When the Freedom Unlimited was first introduced, the card offered a flat 1.5% cash back rewards rate on every purchase. Now, the card earns 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstore purchases and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases.
Here are some ways you can make the most of your cash-back value with the card:
- Use the card for its bonus categories: Familiarize yourself with the card’s rewards structure, so you can ensure that you’re always getting the most out of each purchase. This is particularly important if you use multiple cards for different expenses.
- Avoid less valuable redemption options: Most redemptions with the Chase Freedom Unlimited, including cash back, statement credits, gift cards, travel and Apple product purchases, will net you 1 cent per point. In some cases, you can even get 1.1 cents per point on gift card redemptions. However, if you use your rewards to shop online via Amazon or PayPal, you’ll get just 0.8 cents per point.
- Pair it with another Ultimate Rewards credit card: Chase allows cardholders to pool their points earned with their Ultimate Rewards® credit cards, which can be particularly beneficial if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. . Each of these cards offers bonus value when you redeem your rewards for travel through Chase, and they also allow you to transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to several airline and hotel loyalty programs, where you may be able to get even more value.
To ensure that you get the most value out of your everyday spending, compare the rewards rate on the Freedom Unlimited with other top credit cards to find the best option for your spending habits.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Yes, the Freedom Unlimited can be a great credit card for people looking for their first rewards credit card . The card offers a high base rewards rate and solid benefits for no annual fee.
That said, if you don’t have some kind of credit history — such as responsible use of a non-rewards credit card or a history of on-time payments on an auto loan — or an existing relationship with Chase, you might have a better chance of approval for the Chase Freedom Rise℠ * The information for the Chase Freedom Rise℠ has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. . The Freedom Rise is specifically designed for people without credit history.
Chase doesn’t disclose a maximum credit limit for the Freedom Unlimited credit card, and you won’t know yours until you apply and get approved.
To determine your limit, Chase will look at your credit score, payment history, income, current accounts, debt and other factors.
The Chase Freedom Flex℠ * The information for the Chase Freedom Flex℠ has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. earns 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in categories that rotate quarterly (requires activation), 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores and 1% cash back on all other purchases. In contrast, the Freedom Unlimited earns 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstore purchases and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases.
The Chase Freedom Unlimited is best for people who want to earn bonus rewards without getting stuck with a measly 1% cash back on non-bonus spending. It can also be a great option for people who have multiple Chase Ultimate Rewards ® credit cards and want to make the most of their Ultimate Rewards points.
Keep in mind that you may not get approved for the card if you’ve opened five or more new credit card accounts, including authorized user accounts, from any issuer in the past 24 months. This is known as the Chase 5/24 rule .
You can use the Freedom Unlimited to maintain good credit by using the card responsibly and paying your bills on time. However, the card does require good or excellent credit to get approved, so it may not be a good starter card if you’re new to credit or you’re looking to rebuild a bad credit score .

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .
Chase credit cards are often top of mind when travelers are booking trips because of their superior protections. Chase is one of very few major U.S. credit card issuers that offers a full suite of travel protections across its premium credit cards, including trip delay reimbursement and trip cancellation/interruption insurance.
Trip delay reimbursement covers reasonable out-of-pocket expenses due to a lengthy trip delay that is not covered by the common carrier. Trip cancellation/interruption insurance provides reimbursement for covered travel expenses when you have to cancel a trip or end it early.
Now that more people are getting vaccinated and destinations are reopening borders to tourists, you may be planning trips for later this year or into next. This guide will walk through which Chase credit cards have these benefits, what is currently covered and how you can file a successful claim.

What is covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance?
You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your specific card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your Chase account online. I'll use the Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits as an example.
Here is a rundown of the circumstances covered by Chase's trip cancellation/interruption insurance:
- Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by you or a traveling companion that prevents you or a travel companion from traveling on the trip.
- Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by an immediate family member of you or your traveling companion when it's considered life-threatening, requires hospitalization or requires care by you or your traveling companion.
- Severe weather that prevents a "reasonable and prudent person" from beginning or continuing a trip (terms about what constitutes as qualifying severe weather can be found in your Guide to Benefits).
- Named storm warning.
- Change in military orders for you or your spouse.
- Jury duty or a court subpoena, neither of which can be waived.
- You or your traveling companion's place of permanent residence being made uninhabitable, being burglarized or damaged by fire or flood.
- You or your traveling companion's lodging accommodations at the destination of the trip being made uninhabitable.
- Death or hospitalization of you or your traveling companion's host at destination.
- Quarantine of you or your traveling companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons.
- An organized strike affected public transportation which causes you or your traveling companion to either miss 20% or more of your scheduled trip or miss the departure of a prepaid cruise or scheduled tour (booked through a tour operator).
- Terrorism (there are exceptions here; exact terms on what types of terrorist incidents are covered for trip cancellation and interruption insurance are listed in your Guide to Benefits).
Chase does provide an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance as well:
- Change in plans, financial circumstances and business obligations.
- Preexisting conditions.
- Any loss due to the voluntary surrender of unused vouchers, tickets, credits, coupons or travel privileges available prior to their expiration date.
- Travel arrangements scheduled to take place after the 26th week of pregnancy, or when a multiple pregnancy (such as twins or triplets) or pregnancy associated with an assisted reproductive program (such as in vitro fertilization) occurs prior to the initial deposit date or booking date of the trip.
- Any loss for a trip booked while on a waiting list for a specified medical treatment.
- Medical travel.
- Disinclination to travel due to civil unrest.
- Failure of you or your travel companion to obtain necessary visas, passports or requisite travel documents.
- Illegal activity.
- Suicide, attempted suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury.
- Drug use at the time of the loss (except if the drug is taken and used as prescribed by a physician).
- Disinclination to travel due to an epidemic or pandemic.
- Financial insolvency of a common carrier, travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier.
- War (not including terrorism).
- For trip cancellation only: Trips booked to any area known to be associated with terrorist activity.
- For trip interruption only: Travel arrangements canceled or changed by a travel supplier unless it's the result of severe weather or an organized strike that affects public transportation.
You'll note that "disinclination to travel due to an epidemic or pandemic" is specifically listed as not covered. At the time of writing, Chase had given no update that would change this, which means canceling a trip you can go on but just don't want to is not covered by your Chase travel insurance .
If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Chase on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:
Non-Refundable prepaid travel expenses charged by a Travel Supplier (Travel Agency, Tour Operator, Provider of Lodging, rental car agency, Rented Recreational Vehicle Provider, commercial recreational excursion provider, Cruise Line, airline, railroad, and other Common Carriers). Eligible Travel Expenses also means redeposit fees imposed by a Rewards program administrator. Eligible Travel Expenses does not include Event Tickets or prepaid fees to theme parks, museums, golf courses, or other points of interest (unless such expenses are included as part of a travel package).
What is covered by trip delay insurance?
Trip delay insurance provides reimbursement for expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours, or if a delay requires an overnight stay. It does not include expenses that are covered by the airline or other common carrier responsible for the delay. You and your family members are covered when you put at least part of a trip on your eligible Chase card.
Covered expenses include meals, lodging, toiletries and medication, but do not include any prepaid expenses related to a trip such as a tour or activity fees.
Chase defines covered hazards as equipment failure, inclement weather, strike and hijacking/skyjacking. The Guide to Benefits specifically exempts any delay due to a covered hazard that was made public or made known to you prior to your departure.
Filing a claim
When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim through Chase's online claims center.
Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:
- Expense receipts – Keep receipts from all of the expenses incurred due to the delay. Meal expenses more than $50 per covered traveler must be itemized.
- Fare receipt – You'll need a receipt that proves you purchased at least some of the common carrier fare on your card.
- Multiple payment methods – If you used more than one method of payment for your fare, you must provide documentation outlining any additional currency, voucher, points or other payment method used. For example, if you used points to pay for your flight and just used your card for taxes and fees, you'd need to show documentation to that effect.
- Common carrier statement – This is proof that the trip was delayed, along with the reason for the delay.
- Original itinerary – You'll have to submit a copy of your original ticket.
- Settlement from carrier – You are required to file a claim with the common carrier before submitting a claim with Chase. You'll need a copy of the settlement from the carrier, your insurance and any other reimbursement you'll receive from another party.
Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation:
- Completed and signed claim form — You can get a claim form by calling your benefit administrator, or by visiting Chase's online filing application.
- Original itinerary – You'll have to submit a copy of your original travel itinerary, including any prepaid activities that you are including in your claim.
- Confirmation of cancellation/interruption – You have to provide documentation that gives the reason for the cancellation/interruption, such as an official doctor's note, death certificate, official military orders or other supporting documentation.
- Attending physician's statement – This a document provided by a physician or medical facility that essentially acts as proof that you were treated by them.
- Carrier cancellation/refund policy – You'll have to submit a copy of the cancellation or refund policies of the common carrier, tour operator or travel supplier.
- Expense receipts – Keep the receipts of expenses incurred due to your trip interruption.
- Monthly billing statement – Rather than a fare receipt, you are required to submit a monthly billing statement showing the last four digits of the account number as proof of prepaid travel.
- Any unused vouchers, tickets or coupons — You can add these expenses to your claim, but you'll need to be able to provide proof of purchase.
When you fill out the claims form online, you will be asked to upload these documents. You can scan in paper receipts when needed. Typically, you have up to 90 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.
Proof of flight delay or cancellation
One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each major U.S. airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.
Here is an overview of the process different U.S. airlines require in order for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:
Bottom line
Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans, but it can be confusing to know what exactly is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.
Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

Chase Freedom Travel Insurance Coverage Explained [2019]
The Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited are two very popular cash back credit cards that offer great rewards and come with no annual fee. The Freedom earns a respectable 5% back on rotating quarterly categories and the Chase Freedom Unlimited earns a solid 1.5% back on all purchases.
But beyond the rewards, these cards also offer some decent travel insurance benefits and coverage that many don’t know about. In this article, I will break down the Visa Platinum and Visa Signature benefits for these cards and also show you some alternative options you might want to think about for getting better protections for things like rental car insurance and baggage delay protection.
Table of Contents
Does the Chase Freedom come with travel insurance?
The Chase Freedom cards (both the Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited) come with different types of travel insurance benefits depending on the type of Visa credit card that you are issued. I’ll go into detail below about these different types of travel insurances and tell you everything you need to know about them.
Different types of Freedom cards
The Chase Freedom cards (Freedom and Freedom Unlimited) come in two forms: the standard (Visa Platinum) version and the upgraded Visa Signature version. You can’t apply for one version and instead you will be approved for one or the other when you apply based on Chase’s standards. If you are approved for a Visa Signature version, you’re usually given a minimum credit line of $5,000.
These different versions of Visa cards come with different types of benefits and travel insurance and I’ll go into detail below.
Rental car insurance (Collision damage waiver)
Both the Freedom cards come with rental car insurance (also known as Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver). The Auto Rental CDW benefit provides reimbursement for damage due to collision or theft up to the actual cash value of most rental vehicles
This is secondary coverage in your country of residence which means it supplements, and applies in excess of, any valid insurance. In other words, Auto Rental CDW will not pay for theft or damage reimbursable by your own insurer, employer, employer’s insurance, or any other valid and collectible reimbursement. But you can get coverage for deductibles and other charges such as administration fees.
Outside your country of residence or if you do not have automobile insurance, you do not have to claim payment from any other source of insurance before receiving coverage under this benefit. This essentially turns the coverage into primary rental car coverage but only outside your country of residence.
If you want primary rental car coverage everywhere you go, you’re much better off to go with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred ( full review here ).
The cards offer coverage for you (the cardholder) and any additional drivers permitted to operate the vehicle under the terms of the rental agreement (basically other people who have signed the contract).
It’s also worth noting that there are some exceptions to the coverage such as renting certain vehicles. Excluded worldwide are:
- antique automobiles
- certain vans
- vehicles that have an open cargo bed
- motorcycles
- recreational vehicles.
Also, the benefit only covers vehicle rental periods that do not exceed or are not intended to exceed 31 consecutive days within or outside of your country of residence.
Trip cancellation and interruption
When people talk about travel insurance, they are often thinking mostly about trip cancellation and interruption. These protections are very valuable because they reimburse you for pre-paid, non-refundable costs in the event that certain circumstances prevent you from traveling.
For example, you might book a trip with pre-paid airfare and hotel stays that are all non-refundable (the non-refundable rates are usually always the cheapest). But then you get sick and can’t travel. If you have trip cancellation, you can get reimbursed for all of those expenses (with certain cards). I’ve used this perk when I’ve had to cancel big trips before and it has saved me thousands of dollars before.
But the amount that you can get covered depends on the type of Freedom card that you have (Platinum versus Signature).
Chase Freedom Visa Platinum travel insurance
The standard Visa Platinum offers protection up to $1,500 for each covered person per trip. Here are what its terms state:
Trip Cancellation and Interruption benefits reimburse non-refundable passenger fares charged by an airline, cruise line, railroad, or any other Common Carrier up to one thousand five hundred ($1,500.00) dollars for each Covered Person per Trip to a maximum of six thousand ($6,000.00) for all Covered Persons traveling together on the same Trip, if a Loss results in cancellation or interruption of the travel arrangements.
Chase Freedom Visa Signature travel insurance
The Visa Signature offers protection up to $5,000 for each covered person per trip. Here are what its terms state:
If a Trip Interruption occurs, the Company will reimburse you for up to the maximum Benefit Amount of five thousand ($5,000.00) dollars for: the forfeited, non-refundable pre-paid land, air and/or sea transportation arrangements that were missed
Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance
If you really want better travel insurance coverage you should look into the Chase Sapphire Reserve, a Visa Infinite Card. That’s because you can get coverage up to $10,000 . Here are what its terms state :
Trip Interruption insurance reimburses you or your Immediate Family Members for up to ten thousand ($10,000.00) dollars for each Covered Trip if a Covered Loss causes interruption of the Covered Trip on the way to the point of departure or after the departure of the Covered Trip. Covered Trip means any pre-paid tour, trip or vacation[…]
One major difference between the two types of Freedom cards is the type of expenses covered by trip cancellation. Compare all of the expenses covered by the Freedom Platinum versus the Freedom Visa Signature.
Chase Freedom Visa Platinum
What types of expenses are eligible for reimbursement? Airline, cruise line, railroad and other Common Carrier fares.
Chase Freedom Visa Signature
Some of the prepaid travel arrangements that are eligible for reimbursement include, but are not limited to, airline tickets, train tickets, bus tickets, prepaid tours, hotels, and rental cars.
Thus, based on the terms and conditions, it appears like the Chase Freedom Visa Signature version offers much more expansive coverage (though you may want to inquire to see if the Visa Platinum list is exhaustive).
You’ll need to pay special attention to the terms to make sure that your specific type of loss is covered. The following types of reasons for cancelling your trip may be honored:
- Accidental Bodily Injury, Loss of Life, or Sickness experienced by You or a Traveling Companion
- Accidental Bodily Injury, Loss of Life, or Sickness experienced by an Immediate Family Member of You or a Traveling Companion when the Accidental Bodily Injury or Sickness is considered life threatening, requires hospitalization, or such Immediate Family Member requires the care of the Covered Person or Traveling Companion
- Change in military orders
- An organized strike
- Severe Weather
Some types of situations where you won’t get coverage include times when you’re dealing with a pre-existing condition and other scenarios so make you’re aware of those.
You will need to supply documentation for these protections to kick in. For example, if you got sick and couldn’t travel you should expect to supply a doctor’s note. You will also need to keep all of the documents related to all of your travel expenses because they will likely request you to show them everything you can.
Lost luggage with the Chase Freedom
With the Chase Freedom Visa Signature card you can also get coverage for costs you incur to repair or replace Checked Baggage and/or Carry-On Baggage and personal property contained within due to physical loss or damage, if the loss (including theft) or damage occurs during a Common Carrier Covered Trip.
You, the Primary Insured Person and your Immediate Family Members are covered $3,000.00 for each Insured Person for each Common Carrier Covered Trip but only up to $500 for each Insured Person for each Common Carrier Covered Trip for jewelry, watches, cameras, video recorders, and other electronic equipment.
If you want more luggage protections such as baggage delay protection then you’ll want to consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Both of those cards will allow you to go out on the town and purchase things like clothes and toiletries while you await for your luggage to be returned. Baggage delay for the Sapphire Reserve kicks in after only six hours which is one of the best policies.
Chase Freedom roadside assistance
With the Chase Freedom Visa Signature card you can get roadside assistance. Help is available by calling Cross Country Motor Club at 1-866-860-7978, toll-free, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You are covered up to a maximum of $50 for each service event, up to four events each year.
Coverage is provided while traveling in the U.S. and Canada and includes:
- Battery Boost – If your vehicle won’t start due to a dead or weak battery.
- Flat Tire Service – If you have a flat tire, we’ll install your inflated spare.
- Fuel Delivery – If you run out of gas, an emergency supply will be delivered to you. The cost of fuel is covered for up to 2 gallons
- 24 Hour Towing Assistance – In the event of a vehicle breakdown that requires a tow, a call to the toll-free assistance line will put you in contact with a customer service representative who will arrange to transport the vehicle to the nearest repair facility or location of the motorist’s choice.
- 24 Hour Lockout Assistance – Should you accidentally lock yourself out of your vehicle, a qualified locksmith will be dispatched to remedy the situation.
Travel accident insurance
The Chase Freedom Visa Signature cards come with travel accident insurance which is basically a way to get coverage when some seriously tragic events take place like a loss of life or some type of permanent disfigurement.
Travel and Emergency Assistance Services
With both of the Freedom cards you also get Travel and Emergency Assistance Services. If you call the benefit administrator you can get referrals for certain emergency services.
For example, if you’re in a foreign country and you need to locate a physician or even something like a lawyer they can help. They can also assist with replacing lost tickets, lost luggage, translations, and other requests. The key to know here is that you are 100% responsible for all of the services that they refer you to.
Emergency Medical and Dental Benefit
If you were looking for coverage for certain health-related, the Chase Freedom Visa Signature version allows you to be eligible to receive up to a maximum of $2,500.00 (subject to a $50.00 deductible) for medical expenses not paid or payable by your medical insurance or other reimbursement incurred as a result of Emergency Treatment of a sickness or accidental injury occurring during the course of Your Trip.
Certain terms apply to the treatment but you can get coverage for things like:
- The services of a legally qualified physician, surgeon, graduate nurse, dentist, or osteopath.
- Charges for hospital confinement and use of operating rooms.
- Charges for anesthetics (including administration), x-ray examinations or treatments, and laboratory tests.
- Ambulance services.
- Drugs, medicines, and therapeutic services and supplies.
If you need to be evacuated in the event of an emergency you can also get Emergency Evacuation and Transportation benefits up to $100,000.00.
Final word
Overall, the Chase Freedom cards do offer some level of decent travel protections. But if you really want more comprehensive travel benefits and higher limits, I’d highly suggest that you look into a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Sapphire Reserve. You’ll feel a lot better about the comprehensive nature of those travel protections.

The Freedom Flex card is best known for its rotating quarterly bonus categories . But this card is so much more than that — to start, new cardmembers can earn a welcome bonus that includes bonus rewards and a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers .
Even better, the Freedom Flex card earns up to 5% cash back on purchases:
- 5% cash back in rotating bonus categories each quarter you activate (up to $1,500 in combined purchases every quarter)
- 5% cash-back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
- 5% cash back on Lyft through March 31, 2025
- 3% cash-back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services
- 3% cash-back at drugstores
- 1% cash-back on other purchases
The rewards on this card can be transferred to travel partners if you have an Ultimate Rewards credit card, including the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve ® . This means you can convert your 5%, 3%, and 1% cash-back to 5x, 3x, and 1x Ultimate Rewards points, which translates to a maximum return on spending of 10% .
The Freedom Flex card offers Mastercard World Elite benefits, including a complimentary 1-year ShopRunner membership, $5 off from Fandango after spending $20 at Fandango or on Fandango’s streaming service, 5% cash-back on HelloFresh meal kit delivery plans, and a $5 Lyft credit after taking 3 rides in 1 calendar month.
Cardmembers can also enjoy a complimentary 3-month subscription to DoorDash DashPass , as long as you activate by December 31, 2024.
Some of this card’s other benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty, zero liability protection, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, secondary rental car insurance, fraud alerts, and, of course, cell phone protection.
Why We Like This Card for Cell Phone Protection
The Freedom Flex card offers a full cell phone protection policy, and the full language is available in your Benefits Guide within the Appendix Cellular Wireless Telephone Protection section at the end of the guide.
However, the legal language is difficult to muddle your way through, so we’ve gone ahead and distilled it down in the following sections.
Simply put, one of the coverage requirements is that you charge your monthly cellular wireless telephone bill to your Freedom Flex card .
You get coverage starting from the first day of the calendar month following your cellular wireless telephone bill payment. If you fail to pay a subsequent bill in any particular month, your coverage changes:
- Your coverage is suspended beginning the first day of the calendar month after the month of nonpayment
- Your coverage resumes on the first day of the calendar month after the date of your future payments
In short, we recommend just paying your entire cellular bill from month to month using the Freedom Flex card; it’s impossible to predict when your phone will break or get damaged, so paying your bill every month using the same card will ensure adequate coverage.
Bottom Line: Purchasing your phone outright with the Freedom Flex card does not qualify for cell phone insurance; you must charge your recurring cell phone bill to your card to get cell phone protection.
As long as you paid your cellular bill using your Freedom Flex card the month before the covered incident occurs, you’ll enjoy cell phone protection.
Coverage is suspended if you miss any payments, and coverage generally applies as long as your cell phone incurs damage or theft.
The definition is fairly vague, but we’ll follow up this discussion with a primer on common exclusions and exceptions.
In general, you’ll receive reimbursement for the actual cost to replace or repair a stolen or damaged eligible cellular wireless telephone.
In general, any cellular telephones associated with the primary line and additional/supplemental lines listed on the monthly billing statement enjoy cell phone coverage.
So as long as everybody is on the same cellular bill and that cellular bill is paid for using the Freedom Flex card, everyone can be covered by this cellular protection plan.
The coverage on the Freedom Flex card is in excess of any other insurance available to you, which makes it a secondary tier of coverage .
So if you already purchased cellular insurance, the Freedom Flex card’s insurance would only cover amounts not covered by your other insurance policy.
If you don’t have a separate insurance policy already, you can get up to $600 in cell phone protection per claim with the World Mastercard or $800 per claim with the World Elite Mastercard.
You can enjoy a maximum of $1,000 in coverage every rolling 12-month period.
There’s a $50 deductible per claim, and you’re permitted up to 2 approved claims per 12-month period .
There are quite a few exclusions in which cell phone protection would not be offered:
- Any accessories other than the standard battery and standard antenna provided by the manufacturer
- Telephones purchased for resale or for professional or commercial use
- Telephones that are lost or mysteriously disappear
- Telephones under the care and control of a common carrier
- Telephones stolen from baggage unless hand-carried and under the eligible person’s supervision
- Telephones stolen from a construction site
- Telephones that have been rented or leased from a person or company other than a cellular provider
- Borrowed telephones
- Telephones received as part of a prepaid plan
- Cosmetic damage that does not impact the ability to make or receive phone calls (including minor screen cracks or fractures less than 2 inches in width)
- Damage or theft resulting from abuse, intentional acts, fraud, hostilities of any kind (including but not limited to war, invasion, rebellion, or insurrection)
- Damage or theft resulting from misdelivery or voluntary parting from the telephone
- Losses covered under a warranty issued by a manufacturer, distributor, or seller
- Taxes, delivery, or transportation charges, or any fees associated with the service provided
Bottom Line: The Freedom Flex card comes with $600 in protection per claim for World Mastercards and $800 in protection per claim for World Elite Mastercards, a $50 deductible per claim, 2 approved claims per rolling 12-month period, and up to $1,000 in total reimbursement every rolling 12-month period. To get coverage, simply pay your monthly cellular bill with your Freedom Flex card.
Additional (Limited) Cell Phone Protection
If you’re looking for other ways to protect your phone, you don’t need to stop with a cell phone protection plan. There are other ways to get limited amounts of coverage beyond an established cell phone protection plan.
Like cell phone protection, these benefits come with no additional cost.
The Freedom Flex card offers purchase protection for a total of 120 days after the date of purchase.
You can get up to $500 per claim and up to $50,000 per calendar year in total coverage.
Coverage kicks in if your phone is stolen, damaged, or involuntary and accidentally parted from you.
Another great way to qualify for extra protection is to use the Freedom Flex card’s extended warranty protection, which adds 1 additional year on original eligible warranties of 3 years or less.
Coverage is limited to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per calendar year.
Although you must have a valid original manufacturer’s U.S. repair warranty of 3 years or less, a store-purchased dealer warranty, or an assembler warranty, items inside and outside the U.S. both qualify for extended warranty.
Bottom Line: Purchase protection and extended warranty are 2 additional benefits that the Freedom Flex card offers beyond cell phone protection to help bring peace of mind when it comes to damage or theft to your cell phone.
Since the Freedom Flex card is a Mastercard, you’ll want to call 800-MASTERCARD (800-627-8372) or visit the My Card Benefits website to start the claim filing process.
You must report the claim within 90 days after the loss or as soon as reasonably possible to qualify for cell phone protection.
If you’re filing a claim online, follow these steps:
- Visit the My Card Benefits site and select United States as the country of card issuance.
- Type in your card number and click Enter .
- You’ll be taken to a benefits dashboard. Click the box that says Cell Phone Protection Insurance and click Read more.
- There’s a banner that says Start claim . Click that button.
- Enter the cardholder details.
- Fill out the fields for Item Details and click Save and Continue .
- Complete the form and supply any required documentation during the claims evaluation process.
If you’re filing a claim over the phone, follow these steps:
- Call 800-MASTERCARD to start the claims process.
- The benefits administrator will advise you on the next steps, including required documentation and forms.
- Submit all required documentation and forms within 120 days of the loss.
Some examples of required documentation may include:
- Your credit card statement reflecting the monthly eligible phone bill for the month preceding the date the device was stolen or suffered damage
- A copy of your wireless service provider’s billing statement
- A copy of the repair estimate and photos of the damage (if your claim is due to damage)
- A copy of the police report filed within 48 hours (if your claim is due to theft)
There may be other documentation requested by the benefits administrator, so just be on the lookout for that as well.
After all of these steps are completed, you’ll hear back from the benefits administrator or be notified of the status of your online claim.
The Freedom Flex card is one of the best credit cards to have for cell phone insurance protection. The truth is there aren’t many credit cards out there (especially those without annual fees) that offer cell phone protection.
And even though the number of options is growing every year, the Freedom Flex card remains a top choice.
That’s because this card blends fantastic rewards structures with a legitimate cell phone protection policy and no annual fee. It’s tough to beat that!
The Freedom Flex card can enable you to get a 10% return on spending when converting your 5% cash-back to 5x Ultimate Rewards points via a card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
The information regarding the Chase Freedom Flex℠ was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the freedom flex card have cell phone protection.
Yes, it absolutely does! The Freedom Flex card is one of the few credit cards with no annual fee and cell phone insurance.
You can get up to $800 in reimbursements per claim with a $50 deductible per claim, up to 2 approved claims per 12-month period, and up to $1,000 in reimbursements per 12-month period.
How does the Freedom Flex card cell phone insurance work?
It’s easy! Just call 800-MASTERCARD or visit My Card Benefits’s website to start filing a claim. Provide the required documentation, submit a completed claim form, and wait for a response from the claims team!
Is the Freedom Flex card a Visa or Mastercard?
The Freedom Flex card is a Mastercard. You can either get the World Mastercard or World Elite Mastercard product, depending on your credit limit.
Is it hard to get the Freedom Flex card?
The Freedom Flex card usually requires good to excellent credit. We recommend having a FICO score of at least 700 before applying. We’ve seen those with higher credit scores get declined and those with lower credit scores get approved, so it’s not a rule that’s set in stone.
Does Chase cover stolen phones?
Absolutely. The Freedom Flex card’s cell phone protection policy covers incidents where your phone is stolen or damaged.

Travel | travel troubleshooter: i canceled my cruise, but my credit card claim is lost at sea.
DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: I’m having some trouble with a travel insurance claim for a cruise I purchased through my Chase Sapphire Reserve card.
Last summer, I booked a Viking Cruise with my father and wife. At the airport, my father suffered a medical emergency and had to be rushed to the hospital. We missed our cruise.
Since I had purchased the cruise using my Chase Sapphire Reserve card, which covers cancellations when you’re traveling, I filed a claim for the value of the cruise and plane tickets.
I submitted all of the documents, but Chase is taking its time with the claim. It’s coming back and requesting information it already has, such as a travel ID number.
I have provided them with all this information. If they had read the claim, they would have clearly seen they already had what they were asking for. I had to upload the same Viking Cancellation Statement four times before someone at Chase finally accepted it.
I want my claim approved and the full $19,148 paid, as per the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits. Can you help me?
— Brent Feinberg, Canton, Georgia
ANSWER: I’m so sorry to hear about your father, and I hope he is on his way to recovery. Chase promises you “peace of mind” when you book travel with its card, noting that if your trip is canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations, you can be reimbursed up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses. Your father’s collapse appeared to be covered by Chase.
As I review the voluminous paper trail between you and Chase, it appears the company was working on your claim, but it was slow. As you note, Chase asked for the same documents repeatedly. It also required you to get a letter from your cruise line stating that you did not receive any credits. Worse yet, the claims process was confusing.
There’s nothing wrong with requesting these documents. In fact, you want a credit card company to be thorough when it is dealing with a large claim like this. The underlying problem with your case is that it had dragged on for nearly three months. Even the most complicated claims shouldn’t take more than a month.
The Chase Sapphire Card has a lot of bells and whistles for travelers and is heavily promoted by travel blogs. But stories like yours make me wonder if it is worth the $550 annual fee. You might have applied for a garden-variety cash-back card instead, bought a travel insurance policy for your cruise, and saved some money this way.
Appealing this to someone higher up might have worked. You can always send a brief, polite email to one of the Chase executive contacts I list on my consumer advocacy website, Elliott.org .
I contacted Chase on your behalf. You received a call from Chase the next day. A senior claims specialist worked with you to fast-track the claim, which Chase has now paid in full.
