Open spaces and lovely places

When traveling in New Zealand, it’s the rugged natural beauty that stands out: spectacular glaciers, picturesque fiords, endless coastlines, steamy geothermal activity and so much more. Its breathtaking landscapes combined with its unique Maori culture, friendly cosmopolitan cities and fabulous food and wine comprise the two remarkable islands the “Kiwis” lovingly call home. New Zealand, a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation, also offers a veritable playground for the adventurous. The temperate climate makes it ideal for year-round New Zealand adventures.

Destination Must-See's

New Zealand ms1

Queenstown:

Queenstown is a resort town on New Zealand’s South Island. The city is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu and has spectacular views of nearby mountains and the Southern Alps. The town’s economy is focused on tourism, especially adventure and ski tourism, boasting over 200 adventure tourism activities to take part in.

New Zealand ms2

It is the highest mountain in New Zealand at a staggering 12,218 feet in height. It lies in the Southern Alps, and is a part of Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park. Mt. Cook is popular with mountain climbers who are looking for a challenge and is a popular destination for nature-lovers and casual hikers as well.

New Zealand ms3

This city lies on the North Island of New Zealand and is the largest and most populous area in the country. Roughly one third of New Zealand’s population resides here, dating back to the year 1350 when the Maori people populated the land that is known for being rich and fertile. It is now filled with parks, nature, and volcanic fields as well as home to a rich culture and a good quality of living.

New Zealand ms4

This coastal city is located in the Otago region and one of the Southern Hemisphere’s best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities. The urban area of Dunedin lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounded by the head of Otago harbor. Dunedin is known as the Edinburgh of the south because of its Scottish heritage.

Destination Must-Do's

Milford Sound 23

Milford Sound:

Home to rugged landscapes and all-natural beauty, Milford Sound is described by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This breathtaking region is situated on the west coast of the South Island and features towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and surreal views to all who visit. Among the surrounding peaks, travelers will witness “The Elephant,” resembling an elephant’s head, at 4,977 feet tall; and “The Lion,” resembling a crouching lion, at 4,272 feet tall.

New Zealand md2

TranzAlpine Train:

All aboard the TranzAlpine Train as it travels from Auckland to Greymouth on New Zealand’s west coast. It is said to be one of the most scenic train rides in the world. The journey runs once a day with an approximate travel time of 4 1/2 hours. This region is known as glacier country and features many natural treasures including glaciers, beaches, wetlands, lakes, mountains and forests of national parks.

Bay Islands CoOp 23

Bay of Islands:

As a subtropical micro-region, known for both stunning scenery and deep rooted history, the Bay of Islands has a lot to offer travelers. In the past, these waters were once full of ship deserters, sailors, whalers, ex-convicts, and other rogues – but now the Bay of Islands is a tranquil vacation destination. Among the 144 islands that dot the warm South Pacific Bay is the famous “Hole in the Rock.” Etched over time by wind in waves, the “hole” is large enough to travel through by boat when the tide is just right.

New Zealand md4

Visit this town in the Southland region, located on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake on the South Island. The town borders on the Fiordland National Park, and is home to many species of bird life. It is the perfect place for a hike or bird watching excursion.

Expert Advice

You must try world-renowned New Zealand lamb. Tasty lamb dishes are found on nearly every menu, and what better accompaniment than a glass of the country’s celebrated wine – Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, or Pinot Noir.

New Zealande2

Be sure to keep an eye out for products made from jade, the gorgeous "greenstone.” The stone is important to the Maori who call it 'pounamu.' Maori jade carvings each have their own meaning to the people and make beautiful pendants.

You should probably know that Kiwis are obsessed with Rugby. They don’t just like it, they are crazy about it! Their national team is the All Blacks and you can find their gear for sale almost everywhere. So you may want to pick up a hat or t-shirt and become an honorary fan.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay for entry into New Zealand. A visa is not required.

In order to enter New Zealand, you must apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority.) Information for New Zealand's ETA can be found at  https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz .  Please Note:  You must obtain your ETA(s) at least 60 days (but not more than 90 days) in advance of your arrival in each country.

Please Note:  A separate ETA is required for both Australia and New Zealand, if your Tauck journey includes both destinations.

An ETA to New Zealand may be obtained with a smart phone. Please be sure to first remove your phone case and have your phone's Bluetooth connection turned on.  Note:  You may also use website-based forms to apply for a New Zealand ETA, but this is not recommended as the application procedure is more involved and processing times are not guaranteed.

REQUIRED TRAVEL DOCUMENTS – NEW ZEALAND: Citizens of the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and other countries will require both a passport and an Electronic Travel Authority, or eTA, in order in enter New Zealand. The eTA is an electronic visa waiver, and it is valid for two years.

In New Zealand. For a list of countries and to apply — please visit  https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz .

To install the ETA app (for New Zealand):  On your smart phone, search the Google Play Store (android) or the App Store (iPhone) for the Australian ETA app. Install the app. Once the app is installed, open it and follow the app's instructions. Using your phone, the app will scan and capture an image of your face and images from your passport, and connect with an electronic chip in your passport using NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology. Most smart phones are NFC-equipped, but if yours is not, you should be able to download an NFC reader from the Google Play or the App Store for a nominal fee.  Please Note : There is a per-person fee of $6 U.S. ($9 NZD) to apply for your New Zealand ETA, as well as an additional per-person fee of $24 U.S. ($35 NZD) for New Zealand's International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact an embassy or consulate of Australia to determine what travel documentation is required.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Specific Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to strictly enforced weight restrictions, checked luggage weight must not exceed 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm). Luggage exceeding the allowable weight is subject to excess luggage charges which can result in a considerable additional expense. Guests are permitted to only 1 piece of checked luggage. Hand luggage may not weigh more than 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and the maximum dimensions are 20 x 15 x 10" (50.8 x 38.1 x 25.4cm) (including all wheels, handles, etc). If these dimensions are exceeded, the carry-on may be checked at the gate. Airport regulations require that passengers handle their own luggage through customs.

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

f you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,  no vaccinations are currently required for entry into New Zealand; however, an International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever is required when entering Australia if you arrive from an infected area within 5 days. For complete vaccination information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. You may also log on to the CDC Internet website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of New Zealand to determine what vaccinations may be required for your travel.

You should be in good health and able to walk moderate to significant distances over varied terrain. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the challenging terrain of the beaches, rainforests and outback.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To protect people from the health effects of second-hand smoke, smoking in all hospitality venues, including bars, restaurants, cafés, and casinos, is prohibited in New Zealand. If you smoke, please remember to smoke outside.

Airline Disinsection

Please check with your carrier or refer to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The seasons in New Zealand are opposite of those in the northern hemisphere. During the months of October through May, temperatures typically average 60-75 ºF (16-24 ºC) in New Zealand. During the months of June through September, temperatures average 50 ºF (10 ºC) in New Zealand.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

If you are traveling in August or early September, it is towards the end of Australia and New Zealand's winter season. During this time period, you will experience vast temperature changes and may even encounter snow throughout parts of New Zealand. Please pack additional clothing for layering in colder climates, hats, gloves and heavier jackets.

As you prepare for travel "Down Under", select a wardrobe that is adaptable. Many days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Occasionally cool weather will require warmer "layered" clothing.

For the welcome and farewell dinners, you may wish to dress more formally. On all other nights resort wear is suggested.

Laundry service, including self-service facilities in some hotels, is available on this tour. Additionally, all the hotel rooms are outfitted with hair dryers. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for your journey:

  • Comfortable, cotton clothing
  • Resort wear
  • Sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen
  • Light rain-repellent jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • A pair of sturdy, yet comfortable, pre-worn walking shoes for uneven terrain
  • Camera, film, memory cards, chargers, batteries and other photography accessories
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

New Zealand tour reviews

Contiki was the best 2-and-a-bit weeks of my life. We had the most INCREDIBLE tour manager and coach driver who made the trip so memorable. We travelled almost the whole of New Zealand in just over 2 weeks, did every activity under the sun, met the most amazing friends who are now family , and I just cannot put into words how thankful I am for this experience.

- Nikita Jade, Kiwiana Panorama

Contiki was the perfect way to see New Zealand. So many great unique experiences. Nick and Mads couldn’t have been any better at their roles. Would 100% recommend.

- Flynn Coaker, The Big Tiki

This was a trip of a lifetime. If you’re thinking about doing it, DO IT! You won’t regret it. Everything was so well organised and the group were awesome - friends for life. I had an absolute blast. 10 out of 10 would do again!

- Sophie Walker, Rhythm and Alps

Highlights of our New Zealand tours

Fresh fish and seafood.

As you’d expect from such an island, fish and seafood is big in NZ. Faves include whitebait , crayfish, mussels, oysters and salmon, as well as classic fish and chips .

Inspired by old-school Māori methods of cooking, Hāngī is food cooked underground with hot stones. Enjoy tender slow-cooked Hāngī lamb, pork and chicken - both rustic or fancy versions available.

The classic meat pie usually contains New Zealand lamb, considered the best lamb in the world. Soft meat meets rich gravy in a crumbly pastry case - what’s not to love?

A point of contention with the Aussies, New Zealand claim Pavlova as one of their national dishes . Whoever it belongs to, that chewy meringue and cloud-like cream is a match made in heaven.

Hokey Pokey Ice Cream

Potentially the best ice cream flavour ever. Vanilla ice cream rippled through with soft ‘hokey pokey’ (AKA cinder / honeycomb toffee). One scoop or four?

Best food in New Zealand

Te papa tongarewa, wellington.

The Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa - is the NZ national museum. Divided in two parts it honours Māori culture as well as European immigrant history - a must for history buffs.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

One of the most visited New Zealand museums , Auckland’s main museum explores the country’s natural history and that of its indigenous population through some incredible artefacts and exhibitions.

Canterbury Museum, Christchurch

Museum meets art gallery in this awesome cultural hub. Featuring everything from taxidermied native animals to Māori musical instruments, it’s a great place to spend a couple of hours on a quieter afternoon.

Tūhura Otago Museum, Dunedin

Home to nearly 1.5 million objects, Dunedin’s treasure trove contains some unique and unusual displays. See everything from extinct insects to Japanese armour and hundreds of perfectly preserved Māori artefacts.

National Transport & Toy Museum, Wanaka

650 cars. 60 airplanes. 60,000 toys. Yep. That’s what you’ll see when you enter this massive museum in the charming little town of Wanaka. It’s truly a toy collector’s dream.

Top museums in New Zealand

Homegrown, wellington.

Easily one of the best festivals in New Zealand , Homegrown showcases the biggest and best performances in rock, pop, hip-hop and electronic music from exciting kiwi artists.

Rhythm and Alps, Wanaka

Ring in the New Year like never before. Nestled in the beautiful Cardrona Valley at the foot of the Southern Alps, Rhythm and Alps is three days of music, camping and good vibes beneath the stars.

Pasifika Festival, Auckland

The Pasifika Festival is a joyous celebration of pan-ethnic group the Pacifika New Zealanders. People travel to New Zealand especially to enjoy 11 stages of music and dance, plus some seriously good street food.

Splore, Auckland

Every February, 70km north of Auckland you’ll find a magical cultural event that’s all about compassion and green values. Enjoy great NZ music, art and food with the chillest party animals around.

WOMAD NZ, Taranaki

The global festival WOMAD has put down roots in NZ and is super popular with the kiwis. Watch an eclectic bunch of multicultural acts amidst the North Island’s striking natural beauty.

Welcome to MoaTrek

New zealand small group tours, the best of new zealand in a small friendly group.

Hi, we’re MoaTrek and since the 1970s, we’ve been sharing our favourite holiday spots with visitors to New Zealand on our small group tours. We grew up here and have been exploring the country since we were kids – and now we’ve bottled a lifetime of Kiwi holiday memories into our tours. From North to South, you won’t miss a thing – Milford Sound, Queenstown, the Bay of Islands, Abel Tasman, Rotorua, Tongariro, the West Coast Glaciers and Aoraki/Mt Cook – plus a few of our secret spots you may not know so well, but many of our guests tell us were their absolute favourites.

MoaTrek is a family owned company, started in 1971 and run with a few more “extended” family around these days including of course our great “Kiwi Guides”. We’ll look after you every step of the way.

How do you get to the South Island?

Getting to the South Island is quite easy and time-efficient with two passenger airports in Christchurch and Queenstown offering several flights per day from popular destinations such as Auckland and Wellington. The price of flights can vary depending on which season you're travelling and which region/city you want to explore. Flying into Christchurch is generally cheaper than Queenstown, especially during ski season when the sleepy, snowy town comes to life. You can also catch the ferry from Wellington to Picton (located at the tip of the South Island) which takes roughly 3 and a half hours.

Is it easy to get around Queenstown?

It's fairly easy and reliable to get around Queenstown with a heap of different options available including public transport, car rentals, and walking. You can easily hire a car in Queenstown with several companies located in the city centre. There is also lots of parking available in Queenstown making it convenient to drive to different locations. You can also catch public transport via the local bus network with tickets starting at NZ$2. Queenstown is also relatively flat so walking is another good option, especially for taking in the beautiful scenery.

What's the weather like in Christchurch?

The climate in Christchurch is fairly even and dry throughout the year but temperatures in summer aren't likely to get hot while the temperatures in winter are quite cold. It's very unlikely to experience extreme heat in summer but relatively common for freezes to happen overnight during the winter months. Christchurch still gets sunny though with 2,100 hours of sunlight every year.

How do you get to the Bay of Islands?

It's relatively easy to get to the Bay of Islands from various locations within New Zealand. While the Bay of Islands region doesn't have an airport, there is an airport at Kerikeri which is only 23km away. It is easy to catch a flight from major cities such as Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown, making it the most popular way to travel. You can also drive to the Bay of Islands or catch public transport via the InterCity bus services.

What's the best time to visit Wellington?

The weather in Wellington is often unpredictable and can change multiple times throughout the day. The city is also known for being very windy which is something to be aware of when you're planning outdoor activities such as cycling. However, the climate in Wellington is quite mild throughout the year with warm summers and cool winters, making it the perfect year-round destination.

SZA announces SOS Tour dates dates for Australia and New Zealand with SiR

SZA announces SOS Tour dates dates for Australia & New Zealand

Over the past year, SZA has been dominating the industry. 2023 was headlined by the massive success of her releasing her highly anticipated sophomore album, “ SOS , in December 2022. 23 songs were released, which contained hit such as “ Shirt ,” “ Snooze ,” as well as the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping “ Kill Bill .” Moreover, SZA collaborated with Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers, and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Therefore, SOS went on to debut atop the Billboard 200, and became SZA’s first number one album.

Furthermore, SOS resulted in SZA earning three more Grammys , in February. Those were in the categories of Best Contemporary R&B Album (SOS), Best R&B Song (Snooze), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (Ghost In The Machine featuring Phoebe Bridgers.”

Meanwhile, SZA is continuing her SOS Tour, which she initially ventured on, in 2023. This time, she is performing throughout Australia and New Zealand. This is set to officially kick off on April 15, in Auckland, NZA. Auckland will host the first three shows of this tour. The final date of the tour will conclude on April 30, in Melbourne, Australia.

SiR will also be a special guest performer, as he’s SZA’s Top Dawg Entertainment label mate. His own Bad Karma Tour with TDE’s Zacari is also coming, this summer.

Schedule, venues confirmed for England WTC25 tour of New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket have announced dates and locations for the England Test series, beginning in late November.

Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the Basin Reserve in Wellington, and Seddon Park in Hamilton will host New Zealand's three Tests, all part of the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test Championship.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink says the early announcement of England's Test tour comes after a surge in popularity in the long format, where seven of the eight days of the two Tests against Australia earlier this year were sold out.

“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” he said.

“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers.

“We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.”

New Zealand become WTC21 Champions – Day 6 Highlights

Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.

World Test Championship standings

Both Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, alongside the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer.

The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later in the year.

Air New Zealand inks its largest deal for sustainable aviation fuel

' src=

Air New Zealand and Neste have signed an agreement for nine million litres of neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The deal represents the largest purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Neste by any airline outside North America and Europe for delivery before the end of 2024.

Produced at Neste’s Singapore refinery, which expanded its SAF production capability last year, the nine million litres of SAF will be blended with conventional jet fuel to meet the required specifications and supplied to Los Angeles International Airport between 1 April and 30 November 2024.

The SAF is expected to deliver a reduction of carbon emissions by up to 80%* over the life cycle of the fuel compared to using fossil jet fuel, which includes its production as well as transport emissions.

Air New Zealand’s Chair Dame Therese Walsh is in Singapore on a business delegation to South East Asia led by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

“Decarbonising Air New Zealand’s operations is essential for the airline’s long-term ability to connect New Zealanders to the world, as well as support the country’s trade and tourism sectors, and SAF is a key enabler of this”, says Walsh.

“Sustainable aviation fuel is currently the only solution to significantly reduce emissions from long haul flight, but it currently makes up less than 1% of the global fuel supply. For aviation to reach its net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050, the SAF industry will need to scale significantly.”

“While the SAF supply is small compared with the airline’s overall fuel use, it is nine times the size of Air New Zealand’s first shipment of SAF from Neste in 2022 and demonstrates growing cooperation between two like-minded organisations to advance the supply and use of SAF.

Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation at Neste says Neste is fully committed to supporting the decarbonisation of aviation and is working closely together with partners like Air New Zealand to accelerate SAF usage.

“We are proud to support Air New Zealand’s decarbonisation focus and are looking forward to continuing working together with Air New Zealand and the New Zealand Government to reach their climate goals.”

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says Air New Zealand is continuing to lead the way in sustainable aviation fuel alternatives.

“It is a pleasure to be with the company as they reach another milestone.

“This collaboration is world-leading and I congratulate Dame Therese and Air New Zealand for their commitment to sustainable aviation,” says  Luxon.
