Barcelona Public Transport

The ultimate guide to Barcelona's Public Transport System

Tickets and fares

T-mobilitat.

The ticketing system in Barcelona is transitioning to contactless system called T-mobilitat. From the 1st of December 2023, paper tickets will only be used for single tickets , which you should avoid (they’re the most expensive way of travelling).

There are two types of T-Mobilitat cards.

  • The personal T-mobilitat is green and includes your name. It is needed to benefit from special discounts targeted to students, the elderly or under 18s.
  • The anonymous T-mobilitat is white, and that’s the one you’ll be most likely using as a tourist. You first have to buy a physical card (for 0.50 €) and then you can recharge it with any title you want in the vending machines or online.
  • You can also download the T-mobilitat app on your phone (Android only), purchase tickets there and access by tapping your phone. The app has a one-time payment of 1 €.

barcelona 10 trip card

It is essential that you always validate your ticket before using public transport. You do so by approaching your T-mobilitat to the illuminated squares on top of the validation gates. Having a T-mobilitat with you, even with a valid ticket on it, is not enough to travel legally if you don’t validate it before accessing public transport.

barcelona 10 trip card

If staff asks you to show a valid ticket at any point of your trip and you’re unable to do so, you’ll have to pay a €100 fine. If you’re unable to pay on the spot, your details may be shared with the local authorities so that they can send you the fine.

Types of tickets

Single tickets.

A single ticket is valid for one operator only and costs 2.40€ (for 1 zone). I do not recommend that you buy one of these. To start with, it is not integrated, meaning that they are only valid for one operator (check examples 1 and 2). Secondly, it’s expensive. See examples below:

I want to travel from Sarrià station to Arc de Triomf station , so I plan to take the FGC metro service to Pl. Catalunya and then the L1 Metro line to Arc de Triomf. This will not work with a single ticket, because it has been purchased at a FGC station, and therefore it will not work in the transferring station (which is operated by TMB). Gates will simply not open.

I want to travel from Pl. Espanya to the Pedralbes Monastery , so I plan to take the L3 Metro line and then the V5 bus line. Here, the single ticket will actually work, because TMB operates both the L3 Metro line and the V5 bus line .

You see? Single tickets are a bad idea : they’re expensive, not integrated, and valid for one operator only. Instead, if you buy an integrated ticket, you will pay less, use any service you like, and even transfer through them without any extra cost.

If you plan to come to Barcelona for a visit and find this information useful, please help me keep it running. I kindly appreciate your support!

Integrated tickets

So, let’s get straight to the point. You want an T-mobilitat ticket from the ATM. ATM is the God-blessed organization that integrated different operators into the same system.

T-casual (10 trips in 1 ticket for 1 traveller)

T-casual gives you 10 integrated trips for 11.35€ (30% off due to the temporary reduction: 7.95€). In other words: 1.14€ per trip, plus this is an integrated ticket, so you can take any service and operator you wish, and even transfer through them during the same trip.

T-casual can only be used by 1 traveller at a time. You can still share it amongst other people, as long as you don’t plan to travel at the same time (check T-familiar for that).

Attention : don’t try to use T-casual as if it were a multi-member ticket. If Mary gets through the gate with a T-casual and then gives the card to James, the gates won’t open when he inserts the ticket.

T-familiar (8 trips in 1 ticket, for more than 1 traveller)

T-familiar gives you 8 integrated trips for 10.00€ (this title doesn’t have temporary fee reduction). This means 1.25€ per ticket, so it is slighlty more expensive than T-casual. Then, why would you choose T-familiar instead of T-casual? Mainly, because T-familiar is multi-personal . This means that 4 people, for example, can group together and use one T-familiar simultaneously.

The process is very simple: Mary inserts the ticket in the machine, the doors open, Mary collects the ticket and goes through the gates. Mary then gives the ticket to James, who’s still waiting on the other side of the gates. James enters the same way and then gives it to Carl, etc. T-familiar is particularly good for 4 people to make a return trip. Despite its name, you don’t need to be members of the same family to use a T-familiar.

There are other tickets, but they are less attractive for tourists.

Other tickets

If you are staying for more than 2 weeks, you might be interested in purchasing the T-usual, which gives you a full month of unlimited travel for 40€ (50% off with the temporary reduction, so 20€ until the end of 2022) , plus trips to and from the airport (remember, T-casual and T-familiar do not include trips from/to the airport, you can read my page about airport travel ). In case you are interested in unlimited travel but you only stay in Barcelona for 2-5 days, you might be interested in the Hola Barcelona travel card . It gives you unlimited travel for the amount of days you choose. However, it’s pricey. A 5-day Hola Barcelona card costs 38€, whilst you can buy a T-usual (valid for 30 days) for 40€. Read my post about whether it’s a good deal or not.

If you’re a student staying here for at least three months and you use public transport daily, I strongly suggest that you buy the T-jove ticket , as it grants you 90 days of unlimited travel for 80€ (50% off with the temporary reduction, so 40€). However, even if you are living in Barcelona, T-casual is an adequate ticket if you only use public transport occasionally (say 4 or 5 times per week).

If you make 30 trips per month, purchasing 3 T-casuals is cheaper than a T-usual. If you make 40 or more trips per month, a T-usual is cheaper than 4 T-casuals.

Finally, if you’re a large group (say, 25 people) and you plan to use public transport a few times, you can consider T-grup. It gives you 70 trips within a 30-day period, for 1.135€ per trip. Obviously, it’s a multi-member ticket, so all the group would be sharing the same paper ticket.

Validating your ticket

Once you validate a ticket, you have a period of 1h 15 minutes to finish your trip. During this time, you can transfer between different operators . You need to validate your ticket again , but don’t worry: you won’t be using a new trip. More info on integration .

Access control gates

Owning a valid ticket is not enough to be a legal traveller. You need to validate it before starting your trip. Always keep your ticket with you during the whole duration of your trip, even if it’s a single ticket.

  • Most train stations have access control gates . When you go through any access gate, and you are granted access to the station, your ticket is already validated: you’re good to go. If a train station does not have access control, you will see a validation machine inside the station, and you’re required to validate your ticket before jumping on a train.
  • When you jump into a bus or a tramway, you won’t see any control access gates. On the bus, you enter through the front door, and there is a validation machine right on the entrance. You have to validate your ticket when you enter the bus , and the driver will usually monitor this. On the tram, you’ll find validation machines scattered all around the interior. You don’t have to validate again when you leave.

barcelona 10 trip card

What happens when I validate?

  • In case you have a ticket with a limited amount of trips (like a single ticket or a T-casual), a small display on the access gates will display the amount of trips left that you still have.
  • In case you have a ticket with unlimited trips for a given period of time (like a T-usual), the machine will simply acknowledge the validity of your ticket and let you go through. The same will happen if you use a ticket with a limited amount of trips but you are transferring; it will simply acknowledge the previous validation ( provided that it took place less than 1h 15 minutes ago ) and the doors will open.
  • If your ticket is not valid (because it contains no trips or because it’s damaged), the validation machine will produce a long beep. Doors will remain closed. If you’re on a bus and the driver has already started the journey, wait until the next stop and step out of the bus or buy a ticket from the driver.

Remember to always validate your ticket. If you enter a train, a bus or a tramway and you didn’t have to pull the card out of your wallet, you probably missed something. If they catch you with a non-validated ticket, you will have to pay a €100 fine , even if you have a valid ticket with you.

How much you pay depends on travel distance. Stations are grouped in zones. You pay depending on how many zones you go across. The entire city of Barcelona is within Zone 1 , so most users can rely on 1-zone tickets for most of their trips. You can find an official list of cities and towns here .

All prices shown in this webpage are based on 1-zone tickets. Planning on travelling to other towns? Then take a look at Travelling outside of Barcelona

Kids aged 0-3 don’t pay any fee to use public transport.

You can apply for a free T-16 ticket as long as:

  • You are 4-16.
  • You are resident in Barcelona or any of the municipalities in the ATM.

Children aged 4-16 who cannot use a T-16 will need the same ticket as an adult.

Travelling outside of Barcelona

Prices shown in this page are for 1-zone tickets. Zone 1 includes the entire city of Barcelona and some nearby towns, like L’Hospitalet, Badalona and Sant Adrià.

If you plan to visit other cities during your stay in Barcelona, you will need multi-zone tickets. As a general rule, all tickets shown on this page have multi-zone versions. Prices increase for each zone added to the list. You can find all prices in this document.

Hola Barcelona Travel Card (Hola BCN Card) – Is it worth buying 2024?

What is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card? Does it make sense to buy a HolaBCN card?

What is the Hola BCN card?

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card (English: Hello Barcelona Card) is a multi-day ticket for public transport in Barcelona . It entitles you to:

1 Any number of journeys on the metro (Metro) , the city buses (TMB) , the tram, the light rail (FGC, Zone 1), the Montjuïc funicular railway and the regional or suburban railway (Rodalies de Catalunya, Zone 1).

2 Use of the airport line of the Metro . You cannot use this route with regular single tickets or a 10-trip metro card (T-Casual). If you do not have a Hola Barcelona card, you must buy the Airport Ticket. For a return journey, the Airport Ticket currently (2024) costs €11 per person.

Hola Barcelona Card: Unlimited use of Metro (incl. airport transfer), TMB city buses, tram, FGC light rail zone 1, Montjuïc funicular and the Rodalies de Catalunya regional train (zone 1) – (Pictures: Blog Viajes, F. Lenn, R. Rodríguez, Alquiler de Coches , A. Marques – CC 2.0 licence)

One card – many names: “HolaBCN!”, “Hola Barcelona”, or “Hola Barcelona Travel Card”?

Many names for one card. Until 2019, the card was called “HolaBCN!” Card. Now it is called “Hola Barcelona” or “Hola Barcelona Travel” Card. Nothing has changed except the name. Since both names are familiar, we will use both names here.

How much does the Hola Barcelona Card cost in 2024?

In 2024, the Hola BCN! Card costs per person when purchased in Barcelona:

2 days / 48h validity: €17.50 (€8.75 per day) 3 days / 72h validity: €25.50 (€8.50 per day) 4 days / 96h validity: €33.30 (€8.33 per day) 5 days / 120h validity: €40.80 (€8.16 per day)

Is the Hola Barcelona Card useful for your Barcelona trip?

Hola BCN Ticket hola Barcelona Travel Card

We have calculated this for a typical 3-day trip:

Barcelona is a large metropolitan region with almost 5 million inhabitants.

Barcelona is too big to cover all distances on foot

If you want to be reasonably mobile and see a few of the city’s attractions, you will use local transport. It’s nice, especially in the summer heat, to be able to take an air-conditioned bus or metro instead of walking for miles.

Free airport transfer

You arrive by plane and then have to get from El Prat Airport to your accommodation in the city centre. For transfers from the airport to the city centre , the metro or train offer a fast and inexpensive connection.

You can either buy the “Airport Ticket” for the metro or the Halo Barcelona Travel Card . Regular single tickets or the T-Casual 10-trip card are not valid here.

barcelona 10 trip card

Our conclusion:

For a typical 3-day stay, buying a Hola Barcelona card can quickly pay for itself: Just 2-3 trips per day by metro, bus or tram will save you money.

We can’t put a monetary value on comfort or time savings:

What is it worth to you, for example, if you don’t have to buy single tickets from the ticket machine more often and may have to stand in a queue?

  • The Hola Barcelona Card is very convenient . You don’t have to worry about the validity of single tickets and can also use the bus spontaneously for 1 or 2 stops. Just get on and ride…
  • Moreover, you won’t notice that local transport is run by different companies. Even the metro has two operators (TMB, FGC). The HolaBCN card is valid for all of them: TMB (Transporte Metropolitans de Barcelona), FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) and Rodalies de Catalunya.
Save yourself time and stress abroad.  The Hola BCN! Online Ticket can be purchased via this website. With an online ticket, you don’t have to deal with ticket purchase and fare systems after your flight.

When is the Hola Barcelona ticket not suitable – what are the alternatives?

There are several cases when the Hola BCN ticket is not worth it. Here are some examples and alternative suggestions:

  • You are staying in Barcelona for a longer period of time. In this case, a monthly ticket could be the better choice.
  • You are not travelling by plane and do not want to use public transport very often. In this case, single tickets or a 10-trip T-Casual card are the better choice.
  • If you want to visit a lot of sights. In this case, the “Barcelona Card” may be cheaper for you. The Barcelona Card includes all the services of the “Hola BCN” card and offers additional free or reduced admission to many sights.

Hola Barcelona Travel Card: The Ultimate Guide (2024)

' src=

So, you’re thinking about taking the plunge into the vibrant streets of Barcelona? Whether it’s the allure of Gaudí’s architectural marvels, the mouthwatering tapas, or the sun-soaked beaches that have you hooked, getting around the city can be a tad overwhelming.

Enter the Hola Barcelona Travel Card – a secret weapon for seamless travel. But with so many options out there, is it really the golden ticket you’re hoping for?

Well, given that I live in Spain and have roamed the lively streets of Barcelona more times than I can count (usually by public transport!), I’ve got all the info you need to know on what this card is – and, importantly, if it’s worth it for you.

In summary, what’s the deal with this card?

  • Free access to all public transport – metro, buses, trams, regional and suburban trains, and the Montjuïc funicular
  • Free metro travel to and from the airport (which is normally €10.30 for a return trip)
  • Choose between two and five days validity – so you only pay for how long your trip to Barcelona is
  • Note that you have to collect the physical card once you get to Barcelona, even when buying it online – but don’t worry, I’ve got the pickup points below

Buy the Hola Barcelona Travel Card here (it’s cheaper than buying it in person!)

What does the Hola Barcelona Travel Card cover?

If you’re thinking of making your way around Barcelona with ease, the Hola Barcelona Travel Card is a practical option. Essentially, it’s a multi-day pass that gives you free access to a range of public transport in the city.

That is, with this card in your pocket, you have the flexibility to hop onto the city’s metro, TMB buses, tram, the light rail FGC within Zone 1, take a ride up with the Montjuïc funicular railway, and even use the regional or suburban railway (Rodalies de Catalunya, Zone 1).

Basically, if you plan to use public transport during your trip (which you should, in my opinion), this is going to be one of the best passes for Barcelona based on your travel style.

Plus, if you’re traveling to or from the airport, the card covers the airport Metro line . It’s worth noting that without the Hola Barcelona card, you’d need a separate Airport Ticket for this route, setting you back about €10.30 for a return trip.

Grab your own Hola Barcelona Travel Card here.

You can opt for a Hola Barcelona card that’s valid for 48, 72, 96, or 120 hours. But remember, this starts ticking from the moment you first use it, not by the calendar day. So, if you start using a 48-hour card at 4 PM, it’ll be valid until 4 PM two days later.

What are the benefits of the Hola Barcelona Travel Card?

Exploring Barcelona can be simpler and cost-effective with the Hola Barcelona Travel Card. With versions ranging from 48 to 120 hours of unlimited travel, you have ample time and convenience to discover what the city offers.

The beauty of Barcelona often lies in its neighborhoods, parks, and the seafront. And while walking is a great way to soak in the city, the metro and bus network are easily the best ways to get around Barcelona .

The Hola Barcelona card lets you get around efficiently, granting you access to the extensive metro, tram, and bus systems. And again, if you’re coming in or heading out via the airport, this card covers that metro route.

If you need to pick one up after landing (whether you choose to purchase it in-person or  buy it at a discount online beforehand and then pick it up on arrival) or have queries, you can head to the tourist information offices located at both airport terminals.

What are the exceptions to the Hola Barcelona Travel Card?

While the Hola Barcelona Travel Card offers a lot, there are a few things it doesn’t cover. Specifically, you can’t use it for taxis or the NitBus service. It’s also not valid for the Aerobús, given that it’s operated by a privately owned company.

Despite these limitations, the card provides a comprehensive coverage of the city’s public transportation system. Just ensure you’re aware of what’s included and plan accordingly. Barcelona is an experience, and this card helps you navigate it better.

Is the airport bus included in the Hola Barcelona card?

No, the airport bus, also known as Aerobús, isn’t covered by the Hola Barcelona card. It’s operated privately and isn’t part of Barcelona’s city bus system. That said, with the HolaBCN card, you can hop onto the metro for free rides between the airport and city center.

While the Aerobus offers a direct route and certain conveniences, the metro remains one of the most reliable and cheapest ways to travel in Barcelona , including to the airport and especially if you’re using the Hola Barcelona card. Just remember to check the metro’s timings and routes, so you’re aligned with your flight schedules or city plans.

On the other hand, if you’d still rather have the convenience of the airport bus, you can buy a ticket for the Aerobús right here .

Who is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card best for?

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card is a handy choice for travelers aiming to maximize their time in the city using public transportation. If you’re planning multiple trips or hopping between attractions, this card offers both convenience and cost-saving benefits.

It’s especially useful for those staying in the city for more than a day and want hassle-free access to various transport modes.

For first-timers or those revisiting, Barcelona is packed with sites to see. The card eliminates the need to buy individual tickets, giving you more freedom to spontaneously decide your next stop.

Moreover, if you’re traveling with family or a group, having the card can simplify the logistics of getting around. Simply put, if you’re all about exploring Barcelona’s nooks and crannies without transport worries, the Hola Barcelona card is a solid bet.

Where can you buy the Hola Barcelona Travel Card?

You have a couple of options when it comes to purchasing the Hola Barcelona card. You can buy it directly in Barcelona from a ticket machine, or you can grab it online before your trip kicks off. Remember that buying it online gives you a discount compared to getting one in person.

So if you want to lock in that discount, buy your Hola Barcelona Travel card online here .

However, there’s a slight catch. If you opt for the online purchase, you’ll need to collect the card once you’re in Barcelona. Don’t sweat it though, there are several collection points for your convenience:

Alternatives to the Hola Barcelona Travel Card

Barcelona is a city with a comprehensive transport network, and as such, it has a variety of passes and cards to offer. For instance, there’s the T-Casual card, ideal for someone making multiple trips over an undefined period. The Barcelona Card also offers free transport along with discounts to several attractions.

Then there’s the T-Dia, a one-day unlimited travel ticket without the perks of discounted entry to places. Depending on your itinerary, duration of stay, and preferences, it might be worth comparing these alternatives to the Hola Barcelona card to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

What’s the difference between the Hola Barcelona card and T-casual?

The Hola Barcelona card offers unlimited rides over a set number of consecutive days, making it a top pick for tourists looking to explore extensively in a short span. On the other hand, the T-casual provides 10 trips, not bound by consecutive days.

This makes it ideal for travelers with a more relaxed schedule or those not requiring daily transport.

Basically, the Hola Barcelona card and T-casual are both useful tools to navigate Barcelona’s public transport, but they cater to different needs. It’s worth considering your travel plans and choosing the best one for you accordingly.

Is there a difference between “HolaBCN” and the “Hola Barcelona Travel Card”?

Names can be confusing, can’t they? Let’s clear the air. The card previously known as “HolaBCN!” Card underwent a little rebrand in 2019. Its new avatar? “Hola Barcelona” or “Hola Barcelona Travel Card”.

But here’s the good news – the name might have got a facelift, but everything else remains the same!

Since both names are rooted in traveler memory, I’ll be interchanging between the two in this guide. Just remember, they refer to the same trusty card!

Where is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card valid?

With the Hola Barcelona Travel Card in hand, Barcelona’s public transport is your oyster. It paves your way for unlimited rides on the metro (Metro), city buses (TMB), trams (Tram), light rail (FGC, Zone 1), the Montjuïc Funicular, and Rodalies regional trains within Zone 1.

Why is Zone 1 a big deal? Simple. Most of the iconic sights that have made Barcelona world-famous are nestled right here.

Plus, it conveniently includes El Prat Airport, ensuring your city-airport-city commute is sorted.

Diving a little deeper: Rodalies trains, locally known as Catalan trains, act as a link between Barcelona and its outskirts. These trains reach destinations situated over 50 km from the city’s heart, but with your HolaBCN card, it’s Zone 1 where you’ll enjoy unrestricted access.

If buses are more your speed, you’re in for a treat. The card gives you a ticket to hop on any of the 100+ city bus lines operated by the city’s TMB company. However, do keep in mind that certain specialized bus routes, especially those managed by private entities like the Aerobús (airport shuttle) or NitBus, don’t accept the HolaBCN! Card.

Always good to double-check before boarding!

Beautiful tram in Barcelona can be used when you have Hola Barcelona travel card.

Is it worth getting a travel card in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, having a travel card can simplify your mobility and potentially save you money. However, if you’re planning to stay in Barcelona for an extended period, say, more than a week, a monthly ticket might prove more economical. This ticket gives you flexibility and cost benefits over longer durations.

Unsurprisingly, the answer on whether it’s worth getting a travel card while you’re in Barcelona depends on your travel plans and intentions in the city.

One other example is for those not arriving by plane and anticipating minimal use of the local transport. In those cases, buying individual tickets or opting for the 10-trip T-Casual card might be more sensible. It offers versatility without tying you down to unlimited rides.

Lastly, for the passionate sightseer, the Barcelona Card could be a game-changer. This card not only encompasses all the transport benefits of the HolaBCN card but also throws in either free or reduced admissions to a host of city attractions.

Can I buy a Hola Barcelona Travel Card from the airport?

Absolutely! The Hola Barcelona Travel Card can be purchased directly from the Barcelona Airport, making it convenient for travelers to acquire one right after landing.

(Although you can also buy the Hola Barcelona Travel Card online for a cheaper price than getting it in-person and then simply collect it at the airport once you get there!)

Where to buy a Hola Barcelona card in the airport?

For travelers keen on securing the Hola Barcelona Travel Card from the airport, keep an eye out for the Tourist Information Offices. Here’s where you can find them:

  • Airport, Terminal T1: Barcelona Airport operates from Monday to Friday, 8am to 8:30pm, and over the weekend, from 8:30am to 8:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Airport, Terminal T2: This location is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8:30pm, and on Sundays from 8:30am to 8pm.

Remember, if you’ve made an online purchase of the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, these offices are also where you’ll collect it.

Bonus tip: Purchasing the card online offers a 5% discount, which is a neat saving for just a little pre-planning!

The public check-in area of Terminal T1 of El Prat-Barcelona airport. This airport was inaugurated in 1963. Airport is one of the biggest in Europe and one of the busiest in the world. People are walking to check-in. One of the many advantage when you have Hola Barcelona travel card.

How do you use the Hola Barcelona Travel Card on the bus?

Using the Hola Barcelona Travel Card on the city’s bus system is straightforward and user-friendly. Upon boarding a bus, you’ll find card validation machines. Simply place your Hola Barcelona card against the reader until you hear a beep or see a validation signal.

As you board any of Barcelona’s buses, look out for the card validation machines, typically near the entrances. Approach the machine and tap or place your card close to the reader.

You’ll know the card is recognized when you hear an audible beep or when the machine’s display confirms the validation. This process ensures your card is active and valid for the journey.

And remember, even though the card offers unlimited rides, you should always validate it every time you board.

Touristic bus on the street. Barcelona City Tour is a new official touristic bus service that shows the city with an audio guide. One of the many advantage when you have Hola Barcelona travel card.

Does Hola Barcelona include the Aerobus?

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card does not cover rides on the Aerobus. The reason behind this is that the Aerobus operates as a private service and isn’t integrated with the city’s regular bus system.

However, there’s a silver lining for HolaBCN card holders traveling to and from the airport. While the Aerobus remains outside the purview of the Hola Barcelona card (and you can always buy a ticket for the airport bus separately here if you prefer the convenience it offers), cardholders are not entirely without airport connectivity.

The city’s metro system, which is covered by the card, offers efficient connections to both the airport and the city center. This provides travelers with a convenient alternative, ensuring they can transition between the airport and their Barcelona destinations without incurring additional transport expenses.

So, even if the Aerobus isn’t an option, your HolaBCN card still makes sure you’ll have a seamless airport commute.

How Much Does The Hola Barcelona Card Cost?

The cost of a Hola Barcelona Card depends on how long you want to use the card for.  There are several different options depending on how many days you will spend in Barcelona.  These are the current Hola Barcelona Travel Card prices for 2024:

48-Hour/2 Day Public Transport Ticket: € 17.50

72-Hour/3 Day Public Transport Ticket: € 25.50

96-Hour/4 Day Public Transport Ticket: € 33.30

120-Hour/5 Day Public Transport Ticket: € 38.20

Children under 4 travel free, but everyone else will need their own Hola Barcelona Travel Card.

What is Included in the Hola Barcelona Travel Card?

Within the validity period of your Barcelona Hola Card, you are allowed an unlimited number of journeys on the following forms of public transport in Barcelona:

  • Buses (operated by the TMB Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona)
  • Montjuïc Funicular (not the cable car)

  • The metro or train journey to and from the airport is included in your ticket.

The Hola Barcelona Card only includes the public transport listed above.

Aerobus Barcelona tickets are not included, nor are the Night buses (NitBus). No other entry tickets to attractions or tours in Barcelona are included in the Hola Barcelona Travel Card.

A Public Bus in Barcelona

Is The Hola Barcelona Card Worth It?

This really depends on how many times you are likely to take the metro, bus or tram during your stay in Barcelona.

Before buying your Hola Barcelona Travel Card I would recommend planning out your Barcelona itinerary so you have a better idea of your schedule and how many journeys you will take, and so whether the Hola Barcelona Card will be worth it for you.

In most cases, the Hola Barcelona Travel Card will save you money so I would say that yes it is worth it.

Is the Hola Barcelona Card Worth it to Save Money?

Yes, if you plan to take enough journeys to make it cheaper than buying individual tickets.

single transport tickets for one journey on the metro cost €2.55, so if you plan to take more than 7 journeys in 48 hours then the 2 day / 48 hour Hola Barcelona Travel Card will save you money as it only costs €17.50.

If you plan to take the metro or train from Barcelona airport to the city centre, then a single airport transport ticket costs €5.50, making the Hola Barcelona Travel Card even better value as you’d only need to take 2 trips from/to the airport and 3 other journeys on the public transport to save money.

Day tickets for the Barcelona metro, buses and other public transport cost €11.20 so the price of a 48 hour/ 2-day Hola Barcelona Travel Card is cheaper than buying two separate standard day tickets for the Barcelona public transport system.

Is the Hola Barcelona Card Worth it for Convenience?

Yes, it is the easiest way to take care of your public transport in Barcelona if you plan on taking more than one or two journeys.

I used to recommend buying a 10 journey ticket called a T-Casual (previously called a T-10 ticket), but since the start of 2024 these multi-journey tickets can only bought if you register for the T-mobilitat service in advance.  T-mobilitat is a new service where you buy a transport card which you keep and can top up before taking a journey, or you can use an app on your phone to top up and scan as your ticket.

It takes a couple of days to process the registration online and, although it isn’t complicated, if you only plan on staying in Barcelona for a few days the easiest option is to just get the Hola Barcelona Transport Card which you can buy online here or from any metro ticket machines.

If you only need to take a couple of public transport journeys it may not be worth it, but another benefit of the Hola Barcelona Travel Card is knowing that all of your public transport is taken care of (including the trip to and from the airport) so you don’t have to worry about buying other tickets every time you want to take the metro or bus.

Extra Things to Know

If you buy your Barcelona Travel Card in advance online you will need to exchange your voucher at one of the following tourist information offices, so check your flight arrival times match up with these, otherwise you can just buy it when you arrive:

  • Barcelona Airport Terminal 1, 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM Monday-Saturday, 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM Sunday & Bank Holidays
  • Barcelona Airport – Terminal 2 Daily. From 8 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Barcelona Airport – Metro Terminal 1 Monday to Sunday, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Plaça de Catalunya Main Office Daily. From 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM
  • Plaça de Catalunya Nord Monday to Sunday, from 9 AM to 8 PM
  • Cabina Sagrada Família Monday, Tuesday, and Sunday, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 9 AM to 8 PM

The opening times are correct at the time of publishing but may change without notice.  Opening times may vary on January 6 and December 26, and in most cases, are closed on January 1 and December 25.

Alternatives to The Hola Barcelona Card

The barcelona card: 25+ museums and free public transportation.

The Barcelona Card is an alternative to the Hola Barcelona Travel Card and is great value for money if you plan to visit several of the top museums in Barcelona.  You can read my full review of The Barcelona Card here to see if it is worth it for you.  Overall I think it is great value – if you are planning to visit the museums and attractions it includes.

As well as including unlimited public transport like the Hola Barcelona Travel, the Barcelona Card also includes free entry to over 25 Barcelona museums, as well as discounts to additional attractions and activities, and a free guidebook in 6 languages with a map of Barcelona.

Some of the entry tickets you get for free include:

  • a skip the line ticket to the Picasso Museum,
  • a skip the line ticket to the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC),
  • free entry to the CaixaForum, Moco Museum, Montjuic Castle
  • a skip the line ticket to the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) and the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB)
  • and many more.

You can see the full list of included museums and attractions here .

Similar to the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, the Barcelona Card validity period begins from the first time you use it and lasts for 72, 96, or 120 hours after the first use.

Barcelona Card Benefits

If you love museums and plan to visit several while you are in Barcelona, this card is great value.  Even if you only visit one of these museums on each day of your visit you will still save money compared to the Hola Barcelona Travel Card:

Picasso Museum: online ticket price €15

Moco Museum: ticket price from €14.95 to €17.95

National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC): price €12

Even if you just visit one of these on each day that is at least €52 of entry ticket prices, and with the Barcelona costing just €55 for 3 days it is worth getting, and better value than the Hola Barcelona Travel card, as long as you are definitely going to visit the museums and attractions that are included.

Standard Barcelona Transport Tickets

Instead of buying a ticket that lasts for the whole duration of your trip, you could just buy the transport tickets as and when you need them.  The most common types of metro tickets for visitors to Barcelona are:

Single Ticket (Bitllet senzil)

A single ticket is one journey on the public transport system in Barcelona.  It includes transfers within the city limits for journeys on multiple metros, buses, trams and trains for up to 1 hour 45 minutes.  It is not valid for the metro stations Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 on line L9 Sud, but you can use it for a bus journey or the Montjuïc funicular.  Cost: €2.55

Single Airport ticket (Bitllet aeroport)

Trips to the airport on line L9 are not included in the standard metro tickets, so if you travel to or from the airport on the metro you will need one of these airport tickets.  It is valid for a single metro journey to or from the airport on the metro network. Cost: €5.50

A T Casual Barcelona Metro Ticket

INSIDER TIP: The train (not the metro) from Barcelona Airport Terminal Two to Barcelona is included in the following metro ticket types:

The T-Dia is an individual travel card allowing an unlimited number of journeys to be made in one day on all operators in the integrated transport system, including buses, metro, trams and trains (including the airport train from Terminal 2).  Cost: €11.20 for 1 zone.

T-Mobilitat Cards

T-mobilitat is the new contactless ticketing and validation system for public transport in Barcelona, and requires registering online in advance of coming to Barcelona which makes things more complicated for tourists.  You can register online here .

This is a single-person, multi-journey card that allows for ten separate trips on the metro, buses, trams, and suburban trains within Zone 1 of the Barcelona transport network.  There is no expiration time for the tickets, so you can use it across several days.

The only time you need to check the expiration date is if you are visiting Barcelona over New Year, as prices often change on 1 st January and tickets bought in the previous year are not valid for the New Year.

Cost: €12.15 for 1 zone.

NB: The T-Casual replaced the popular T-10 which could be shared between multiple people – the T-Casual cannot be shared, each person must purchase their own ticket.

T-familiar Card

The T-familiar card is a multi-person travel card allowing 8 journeys in 30 consecutive days from the first validation, so it could be useful for families who only want to take one or two journeys on the metro. Cost: €10.70 for 1 zone.

I hope this has helped you to decide if the Hola Barcelona Travel Card is worth it for your trip to Barcelona.  If you love visiting museums then the Barcelona Card could be a better option for you, or if you think you’ll only take a few journeys on public transport then you can just get the basic transport tickets either in a 10 journey ticket or as and when you need it.

Happy travels!

The Best Tourist Cards for 2024!

How to select the right tourist card, or city pass, for your Barcelona city break! We look at the top 4 cards , which of them include entry to La Sagrada Familia, and which offer the best deals and value for money.

Top 4 Cards: – Barcelona Card | Barcelona Pass | Go City All-Inclusive | Go City Explorer

The original idea of tourist cards, here in Barcelona and other popular travel destinations around the world, was to give their users one handy entry card they can use at all the major attractions around town, saving them a lot of time, money and hassle. Often with free public transport thrown into the bargain.

While the idea is simple, the execution is not always so easy. For example many museums and sights in Barcelona are privately owned (including several of Gaudi’s greatest hits!), and a couple of mega-attractions like Sagrada Familia require pre-booking. Meanwhile the attractions that are publicly owned (most of the museums) have to abide by certain rules and regulations.

The result is that there is not one “catch all” solution to entering all of Barcelona’s attractions for free, but rather several different options that will suit the needs of different travellers to different degrees.

We compare the different tourist cards and city passes on offer… so you can make an informed decision about which option works best for you.

In this article, we compare the different tourist cards and city passes on offer, along with a transparent look at who runs them (as well as the official tourist board, several large travel giants offer their own products!) and how much value you get from each, so you can make an informed decision about which option works best for you.

* Barcelona Pass includes your choice of the Tourist Bus or Gaudi’s Casa Mila (or you can choose Casa Batllo, but in this case you need to pay a €10 supplement).

1. Barcelona Card

By Barcelona Turisme

Barcelona Card: What’s Included? | Prices | Is It Worth It? | Online Reservations

The city’s official pass, run by the tourist board, the Barcelona Card offers free entry – with skip the line privileges – to many of the best museums in the Catalan capital, most notably the superb Picasso Museum , but also the MNAC ( National Museum of Catalan Art ), MACBA , Joan Miro Foundation and most branches of the Barcelona History Museum.

NEW: They also added free entry to the MOCO Museum, worth €20. Given this trove of modern art is right next door to the Picasso Museum, you can now do a double art dip in just a couple of hours.

There’s also free entry to many of the city’s less visited, but worthwhile treasures, such as the Frederic Mares Museum, Caixa Forum , CosmoCaixa ( good for kids !), Design Museum, Egyptian Museum and the serene Botanical Gardens .

The card doubles as a free travel card around the city , which is handy and saves you faffing around at ticket machines for the duration of your stay.

After purchase, you will need to collect the card from the airport or one of the tourist offices / collection points in the centre. Usually it’s better to collect it at the airport, so you can take advantage of the metro transport direct from arrival. However the card is valid from the moment you first use it, so if you’re not planning to visit any museums on your first day you might want to wait to activate it later.

Sadly the Barcelona Card doesn’t include tickets to La Sagrada Familia nor Park Guell, nor any of Gaudi’s other UNESCO-listed works . Although it does at least provide you with discounts for Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, Casa Vicens and Palau Guell, and many many more attractions, shops and entertainment venues.

Overall, I would recommend this option for any museum lovers who plan on using Barcelona’s excellent public metro system during their stay.

Top Tip: If you want museums and public transport plus Gaudi you could buy this card and the Barcelona Pass (or Go City Explorer Pass ).

Free Major Attractions

  • Picasso Museum . Skip the line entry to this Barcelona highlight (worth €12).
  • MNAC . The excellent National Museum of Catalan Art (worth €12).
  • MACBA.  The city’s best modern art museum, in a stunning building (worth €10).
  • Joan Miro Foundation . A look at Catalonia’s most famous artist (worth €12).
  • MUHBA History Museum . Roman ruins, war bunkers and Jewish heritage across 4 different locations (worth 4 x €7).
  • MOCO Museum . Spanking new museum with works by Banksy, Basquiat, Haring and Kaws (worth €19.95).

Other Freebies

Barcelona Card holders receive a free guide and metro map with their purchase.

Includes free public transport (metro, buses, trains and trams) in Barcelona city centre, plus free metro ticket to the airport.

Barcelona Card offers billions of discounts . Here’s a sample selection:

Barcelona Card Pricing

Is it worth it.

Is it worth buying the Barcelona Card? The conclusion is yes, provided you plan on visiting at least one museum a day. If you do so, you’d be saving up to €20 per museum entry fee, plus travelling for free around the city using the excellent metro system, which will also now take you all the way to the airport. You’d have to buy your Park Guell and Sagrada Familia tickets separately, however, which is why for first-time visitors to the city I’d recommend checking the Barcelona Pass or the Go City All-Inclusive or Explorer Pass , before making your decision. You may even be able to combine two passes to get everything you want.

3. Go City All-Inclusive Pass

Go City All-Inclusive: What’s Included? | Prices | Is It Worth It? | 5% Discount Code!

A new brand in town, the Go City All-Inclusive pass is rather impressive! You simply choose the number of days you will need the pass for (the more days, the higher the cost), and then you can visit as many sights and museums as you like for FREE within that timeframe.

Amazingly, Go City seemed to have struck a deal with virtually every major tourist attraction in town, and everything you hope to see in Barcelona is included in the price (go back to Comparison Table to see what I mean!). In fact, they’ve actually gone one better for some of the top attractions, as you actually get a guided tour of La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Picasso Museum included in the price (which starts at €159 for a 2-day pass, and perhaps hits a sweet spot at €194 for a 3-day pass), not just a ticket.

So far, go great… but is there a snag? Yes, a little one. Some of the best sights (starting with La Sagrada Familia) require booking in advance and are limited by availability, so you need to check that on their website before you go ahead and buy the pass. In general, provided you buying your All-Inclusive pass a week or two ahead of time you should be ok.

Overall there’s a stunning amount of high-end, expensive attractions included in the cost of the pass, and it should be really easy to get value for money – you might even save a small fortune! ( UPDATE: We’ve negotiated a 5% discount on the pass for Barcelona Life readers… keep reading to save even more!).

  • Sagrada Familia Guided Tour . See Gaudi’s masterpiece with a local guide (worth €60).
  • Park Guell Guided Tour . Wander through these landscaped gardens with a licensed guide (worth €32)
  • Picasso Museum Guided Tour . Discover the legacy of Picasso in Barcelona and his early works (worth €33)
  • Camp Nou Museum & Tour . Visit the stadium and museum of the legendary Barça FC (worth €28).
  • Casa Batllo . A truly magical house with a fairytale façade (worth €35).
  • Casa Mila . Gaudi’s most famous mansion, aka La Pedrera (worth €25).
  • Poble Espanyol . Visit the whole of Spain, in one village (worth €14).
  • The Aquarium . Admire 450 aquatic animals including bull sharks (worth €24).
  • Barcelona Zoo . See lions, tigers, hippos, giraffes and gorillas (worth €21.40).

You can check the full list of the 40+ free attractions and experiences on Go City’s website , where you can also buy the pass.

In addition to entrance tickets to almost all the top attractions, the Go City All-Inclusive pass also includes a tonne of tour options, such as a free walking tour with tapas tasting (worth €25), a free bike tour (€30), a segway tour (€29) or even a ticket to an escape room (worth €25).

The Go City All-Inclusive pass includes a day’s use of the Hop On / Hop Off Barcelona Tourist Bus, plus Montjuic Cable Car tickets.

Go City All-Inclusive Pass Pricing

Is the Go City All-Inclusive pass worth it? The short answer is YES . It’s incredible value. The 2-day pass only comes in at less than €80 a day… take the Sagrada Familia guided tour (€60) and you’ve nearly made that back… especially if you arrived by the Tourist Bus (€33). Take the Park Guell tour in the afternoon (€32) and you’ve completed €112 worth of activities for almost half price. Then on your second day you just need to visit two more premium attractions to be saving, and there’s probably time to do 3 or 4 if you plan well.

The picture looks even better on a 3-day pass, which comes in at less than €65 a day. You could do La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell via the Tourist Bus on Day 1 and finish with something fun like a brewery tour or escape room; then visit Casa Mila and Casa Batllo (next to each other), followed by Picasso Museum and MOCO Museum (also next to each other) on Day 2; and then on Day 3 take your pick between Montserrat , Camp Nou Experience, the Aquarium and many more.

4. Go City Explorer Pass

Go City Explorer: What’s Included? | Prices | Is It Worth It? | 5% Discount Code!

The Go City Explorer Pass works completely differently to every other tourist card on this list. Instead of being valid for a number of days, the pass grants you entry to a set number of attractions (between 2 and 7, depending which option you select), and you can handpick these attractions from Go City’s list of partners.

The list includes virtually every major attraction in town, and overall the Explorer Pass is the most flexible option for travellers.

  • Segway Tour . Take a spin through Parc de la Ciutadella (worth €29).
  • Tapas Tour . A walking tour of the Gothic Quarter with snacks (worth €22).

The Go City Explorer pass doesn’t include any free transport, but you can use one of your attraction slots to select the Hop On / Hop Off Barcelona Tourist Bus. (You can also select the Montjuic Cable Car, but that would only make financial sense if you opting for the 6 or 7 attraction pass option).

Go City Explorer Pass Prices

The great thing about the Go City Explorer Pass is you really can’t lose. You simply add up the prices of the attractions you want to visit and then check if the pass works out cheaper!

Generally speaking, if you want to visit a lot of premium attractions (by which I mean those that cost €20 or over) then the Explorer Pass is going to save you a significant amount of money. For example selecting the Sagrada Familia guided tour (€60), the Park Guell guided tour (€32), Casa Batllo (€35), Camp Nou Experience (€28), the Tourist Bus (€33) and the Picasso Museum guided tour (€33) has a total value of €221, while the 6 choice pass only costs €179. That’s a pretty massive saving!

Thanks for your great site. We bought the 2-day Go City All Inclusive pass as it’s our first time in Barcelona. We noticed that there were instructions to pre-reserve Sagrada Familia and Park Guell and we did so. But for Casa Mila and Casa Batllo it says to present the pass at entry. I’m worried that if we don’t pre-reserve it could be full (traveling beginning of June). Do you know if it’s possible to reserve an entry time in advance with the Go City AI Pass?

barcelona 10 trip card

Hi Joanna, apologies, just seen your comment now. I imagine you will be all right (SF and PG are on another level of busy-ness to other attractions!), but let me write now to Go City and I will try to get some clarity here…

Hi Joanna, I have just heard back from Go City. They said

“On attractions that need reservations we have the booking system which they have used for the other attractions that require. On attractions that say just show your pass unfortuantly it is not possible. We give hints on less busier times ie Casa Batllo: We recommend visiting between 12pm and 3pm or after 6pm to avoid busiest times. During peak times please allow an extra 20 mins to get through the ticket gates.”

It seems they are confident you will be able to get in, otherwise they would no doubt add an obligatory time slot reservation system. I occasionally walk by those two mansions, and I haven’t seen any excessive queues of late. Hopefully that will remain the situation in June.

Hi Duncan. I’m hoping you can advise on best pass that would incorporate as many of the following as possible. In Barcelona from midday on Monday 25/3 to Thursday 28/3 midmorning: Sagrada Familia Park Guell Picasso musuem Casa Batlo Casa Mila MACBA

Many thanks in advance

I think either take the All Inclusive Pass for 2 days (Tues and Weds).

https://www.barcelona-life.com/go-city-all-inclusive-pass

This has the advantage that the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell tickets come with a guided tour. I think the Picasso Museum too.

Or take the Barcelona Pass and select Casa Batllo instead of the Tourist Bus (this is a new option available!), then pick up the 3 cheaper attractions (Casa Mila, MACBA and Picasso) as individual tickets with the 10% discount you get with the Barcelona Pass… I think this works out marginally cheaper than the Go City Pass.

Hi Duncan My husband and I are visiting Barcelona from 10 – 16 May. We’ll be staying in Sant Adria de Besos, which means we’ll have to travel to the city centre for most of the attractions. We are planning to see Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Batlo & Cable Car to Montjuic and Picasso museum, using the Hop on Hop off bus. Can you please recommend a suitable city pass? Are all of the tickets bought in advance skip-the-line tickets or just the guided tour ones?

We’ll have to use public transport every day and also when travelling from the airport on 10 May. On 16 May we board a cruise ship. Is it worthwhile buying the Hola Barcelona Pass or you also mention T Casual tickets? Thank you for this very informative guide! Regards Suzie

So you could get the Barcelona Pass and select Casa Batllo (instead of Tourist Bus), then pick up individual tickets for Tourist Bus, Cable Car and Picasso Museum with a 10% discount on Tiqets (which you get with the Barcelona Pass). This should work out around 135 euros I think.

Currently the All Inclusive 2 Day pass is on sale for 130 euros so that might be even better!

Hope that helps!

Hello I am planning family trip to Barcelona in the begining of June(5days=3full days, because we arrive at 13:00 1st day and leaving on 5th day at 13:00) I am travelling with my husband and my mother in law,(seniora with limited mobility for walking). And i have disabled person’s status. We have plane tickets and place where to live(close to La Sagrada Familia). We know what we want to see( Montserrat,Tibidabo Montjuic,Magic fauntain Montjuic,Park Guell, something similar to la Boqueria, but less crowded.Sagrada Familia,Casa Batllo,Casa Mila,Poble Espanyol,MNAC,Jardi Botanic de Barelona,Parc de Cuitadella, maybe some flamenco. Also to try best Patatas Bravas and sangria, etc.

Hi Ilona, not sure if you had a specific question, but I think either of the Go City Passes should save you some money.

One thing to bear in mind. The Magic Fountain is not working because of the drought conditions. The area is still nice to see, as the MNAC building is very grand with good views.

Good alternatives to Boqueria, with much less people, would be Santa Caterina Market or Sant Antoni Market.

' src=

Hi again Duncan! Thank you for answering my previous question. I have one additional. Is the All-Inclusive pass consecutive days? We are planning a couple day trips in the middle of our Barcelona vacation (to Girona & Tarragona) so I’m worried we’d lose those days if we get the All-Inclusive pass. Thanks!

Hi Lisa, yes the All Inclusive pass is for consecutive days, so you would have to bear that in mind.

The Explorer Pass is valid for 60 days, so you might want to crunch the maths on that one instead!

' src=

Hi Duncan, we are travelling to Barcelona next week for 5 days and I was thinking about getting the Go City Explorer Pass and possibly do 5 or 6 main attractions in that week. We hope to walk from one thing to another as we have a city centre apartment. If you have to book Sagrada in advance, how can you show that you have a Go City pass which allows free entry? I’m not clear on how to do that. I’m guessing this doesn’t give an option to skip the queue? Thank you for this brilliant guide!

Hi Mandy, so when you book the Go City passes you should be presented with a link to book a Sagrada Familia Guided Tour. The tour is run by another company (Amigo Tours) and they typically offer slots three times a day. 9am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. The tour will include your tickets and you won’t have to get queue to get in (you will have to turn up on time though to the meeting point!).

More details here: https://gocity.com/en/barcelona/attractions/sagrada-familia-guided-tour

Hello Duncan! My family is visiting Barcelona from April 1-9, 2024. We are 2 adults/2 children (10 & 12). We are looking to visit La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Montjuic, Casa Battlo, Casa Mila & Montserrat. We are not renting a car, so some kind of metro pass would be a helpful addition. Thank you!

I would definitely look closely at the All Inclusive City Pass, which is great for jam-packed schedules like yours.

And remember to use your discount code of BARCELONALIFE5

For transport you could take advantage of the Tourist Bus with the All Inclusive (I think just for one day though), or you could invest in Hola Barcelona Transport Cards if you plan on being on the metro a lot. If you are not 100% sure you will get value from the Hola Transport Cards and want to be flexible you could probably just buy each family member a T-Casual card on arrival, that costs about €11-12 and gets you 10 journeys per card.

Happy New Year! We are a group of 3 visiting Barcelona next month. Arriving Feb 5 afternoon, staying in Barcelona until Feb 11 early morning, going to Madrid and then back to Barcelona on Feb 12 late evening as our return tickets have to be departed from Barcelona on Feb 13. We plan to visit La Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, Casa Vicens, Park Guell, Picasso Museum, Montserrat, Tibidabo – Temple Expiatori de Sagrat Cor, etc. It doesn’t seem to have any pass or transport card for 7 days, is there? What’s the best options for fastest transportation/attractions entrance? Thanks!

Happy new year Angela!

I would look into the Go City Explorer Pass… reason being is there’s no time limit (well a 60 day time limit, which is easily enough for your purposes!).

https://www.barcelona-life.com/go-city-explorer-pass

Anything that costs €25 or over put on the pass… anything less just buy as an individual ticket! And don’t forget your discount code. BARCELONALIFE5

Greetings! I’ll be in Barcelona for 3 days on the 16th-20th of December (2 days for travel). I anticipate on visiting La Sagrada Familia, Picasso Musuem, and Dali Theater and Musuem. What would you suggest? Also, do I need to make a reservation prior to my visit?

Cheapest would be just to buy separate tickets, although, if you enjoy guided tours, then you get an Go City Explorer Pass, 2 attraction option, and choose Sag Fam guided tour and Picasso guided tour and you would be making a very nice saving!

https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona-card-and-city-passes#go-city-explorer-worth-it

Don’t forget your BARCELONALIFE5 code!

As far as I know Dali Theatre Museum is not included in any pass… i actually just found a cool tour which I mention on my updated December article… check no. 11

https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona/december

You can also catch the train easily enough.

I would reserve your Sag Fam tickets / pass asap, the rest you can probably do nearer the time…

Hello Duncan! We’d love to see SF without the guide and Park Guell and Casa Batillo. We are also planning to use the metro. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Ok, so you might want to consider the Barcelona Essential Pass , which is similar to the Barcelona Pass, but with public transport included (in the form of the Hola Barcelona Pass ) instead of the Tourist Bus.

That would get you Sagrada Familia (with audioguide), Park Guell and free public transport (including metro/train from the airport), plus audioguide for Barcelona in general. When you buy the Essential Card via Tiqets you get a 10% discount code emailed to you, which you could use to pick up Casa Batllo tickets.

Hope that works out for you!

Hi first time to Barcelona, dates 4th to 7th september would like to visit casa battlo. segrada, park guell , casa mila, motjuic and possibly a boat trip too , can you advise which would be best please , travel and attractions cards

Those sights are all included in the Go City All Inclusive pass .

For Montjuic, you could use the Tourist Bus (included) to get there and you also have cable car tickets (for going right to the top), and free entry to Poble Espanyol, Olympic Museum and CaixaForum. Or you could sign up for the Montjuic Walking Tour (included).

Hi Duncan There’s just to many choices. We will be flying in on the 26th of October and leaving November 1 on a cruise so we are most interested the transit pass and a few major attractions. We enjoy walking tours self guided and just getting a feel for the city. Don’t really enjoy busy tourist attractions. Which pass would you suggest. Thanks Rich

Yes, it’s not always an obvious decision… I think the Barcelona Pass does a great job of catering to the first-time visitor’s needs. Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, tourist bus to join the dots. Grab it and you’re done basically!

However from your comment I feel like the Barcelona Card might be a better choice. That’s the official city card, which grants you free entry to pretty much all the city museums (more reading here: https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona/museums so you can see which take your fancy), none of which (apart from the Picasso Museum) get too crowded. The Barcelona Card also grants you free public transport.

The Go City passes are great if you want to do virtually ALL the expensive Gaudi sights (Sag Fam, Park Guell and the three separate mansions) and / or like tours. You can save good money with them if you are piling up the expensive options basically.

Hope that summary helps!

You might be best off making your itinerary first and then seeing if any of the cards line up well with your choices!

We are traveling in August with my husband and 3 teens. I already booked my Sagrada Familia tickets. We will like to visit Casa Batlló, el parque Güell, Monserrat tour, and maybe something else. Which pass would you recommend? Also, we are taking a cruise, which way is easier for us to get to the terminal, uber or taxi? Thank you Duncan!

If you’re already got your Sagrada Familia tickets then it’s hard to save money with any of the passes, because SF is the most expensive attraction and the cards are usually priced around including it.

The 3-choice Explorer Pass would see you break even more or less, but with the disadvantage that their Montserrat tour is just transport (no tour guide), and it might be a place where you want more context…

I would probably just go for individual tickets to each attraction in your position.

Here are my top 5 Montserrat tours btw, for some cool options:

https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona/montserrat#tours

Regarding transport to the cruise port… I haven’t actually been down to the cruise port, but I believe there’s a taxi rank there. Perhaps best iea though to book one advance, via the likes of Book Taxi BCN

https://www.barcelona-life.com/book-taxi-bcn

On their website they have a drop down menu where you can select Barcelona Port – Cruise Terminal as your pick up and Barcelona City (All Destinations) as your drop off. You can also let them know what ship you’re on, so they’ll be there to meet you.

Uber doesn’t work in Barcelona btw (although Cabify app does, so you could also try that for getting around town).

You have this in your post: Free Transport The Go City All-Inclusive pass includes free use of the Hop On / Hop Off Barcelona Tourist Bus for the duration of the card, plus Montjuic Cable Car tickets.

The Go Card company said you only have a bus option once, NOT for each day you have the all exclusive.

Thanks Tina, you’re correct, thanks for pointing that out. I have updated the post!

' src=

Hi Duncan – great information but I am confused as to what is best. 2 of us would like to visit La Sagrada, Casa Batllo, Casa Mila and Poble Espanyol, plus take the cable car. Is the Go City Explorer x 4 options the best way to go, bearing in mind I then have to pay for trains when I use them. Thanks for your suggestions.

I think you want the 3 choices Explorer pass…. because two of your attractions (Poble Espanyol and Cable Car) are less than €20, which is the difference between the 3 choice and 4 choice and the 4 choice and 5 choice pass. In other words, you’d be paying more. As long as each choice costs €20-25 the Explorer works better… if less, better to buy individual tickets.

Conclusion: So get the 3 x Explorer Pass for Sag Fam, Casa Mila and Casa Batllo and then pick up individual tickets for Poble Espanyol and Cable Car.

ps. This Montjuic article might be useful for you!

Hi Duncan, Wonderful info, lots to digest, I am visiting with my daughter in May who uses a wheelchair, are the hop on and hop off buses accessible? Wondering which pass would work best for us, we are staying for six nights, don’t know where yet perhaps you can suggest an area that would be fun and accessible. I appreciate your advice.

So I checked for you and the official tourist bus website says :

“All Barcelona Bus Turístic buses are equipped with an access ramp and wheelchair space inside the vehicle.”

I would perhaps suggest staying somewhere in, or near, El Borne. It’s a nice district, centrally located and a good vibe. However you can’t go too far wrong, every central district is pretty nice IMHO and there’s a good metro services (with lifts and ramps) if you need to swap districts. Being close to the yellow line is useful for getting to and from the city beaches. Speaking of which Poblenou is a very chilled district with little traffic and close to the beaches.

I would recommend checking out this post my an accessibility expert for more tips:

Have fun, and let us know how you got on!

Hi Duncan, My husband and I are visiting Barcelona in 2 weeks, where our daughter is studying abroad. Looking at all of the passes it seems the City Explorer Pass may be best for us (and then purchasing the T-Casual transportation passes). My question is for the Sagrada Familia tickets, can we get tickets with a Tower Tour? It seems that some of the passes don’t offer the Tower tour and I’m not sure if the Explorer Package does.

Also, we want to book a tour to Montserrat. Is there one you would recommend over another? There seem to be so many options. We like to be active so one with a hike or wine tasting sound good. Thanks for any help you can give!

Tower access is not part of the Sagrada Familia tour available with the Explorer Pass, although it’s possible you could later upgrade with the company who provides the Sagrada tour (Amigo Tours). The picture is not clear I’m afraid (I asked Go City, but they were not even sure).

If you want to be 100% sure, I’d maybe get separate tickets and use the Explorer Pass for other attractions. Given you’re here for 2 weeks you can take your time and the Explorer Pass makes most sense. Just use it for the most expensive attractions!

Regarding Montserrat, I put what I think are the best tours here:

Hope that helps…

Hi Duncan, We will be traveling with our 4 year old in April. Wondering what would be the best option for us if we want to visit Parc Güell, La Sagrada Familia, el Tibidabo funicular (amusement Park not necessary), Montjuïc, Casa Milá or Batlló, a boat ride and possibly Montserrat. We don’t want guided tours, just entrance. We arrive on a Saturday late afternoon and leav e either Tuesday or Wednesday (if we include Montserrat). We would probably do our own thing around the Gothic quarter on Sunday and maybe a boat tour to allow for jet lag recovery. Would possibly fit in El Tibidabo or Montjuïc Sunday as well if we are up for it. Then sagrada familia, Parc Güell and Casa Batllo on Monday. Leaving Tuesday afternoon or tagging on Montserrat on Tuesday and leaving Wednesday morning. I was thinking the GoCity 3 day all inclusive pass would be worth it but not seems like most of what they offer are guided tours, which would be a challenge with a jet lagged 4 year old (and limited time). What pass would you recommend for our time there? I don’t know if it makes sense to start our pass on sunday (when jet lagged) or Monday. I liked the idea of the hop on hop off for transportation ease to the main attractions but maybe it’s not too hard to navigate public transport. Thank you!

Hi Michelle, while possible I think this might all be a bit ambitious for only two full days (Sunday and Monday).

If you’re keen to avoid being on a tour, perhaps the Barcelona Pass makes more sense. You can do Sagrada Familia and Park Guell on the same day, and use the rest of the day to ride the Tourist Bus over Montjuic (you don’t need advance tickets for Montjuic attractions like Joan Miro Foundation or MNAC so you can play Montjuic by ear). I’d just advise leaving plenty of time to get from Sagrada to Park Guell by Tourist Bus as I’ve heard the buses can get busy these days so you might have to queue a little to get on one. (Public transport def. possible, but a bit more hassle / walking).

Once you have the Barcelona Pass you can get 10% off Casa Batllo and a number of Montserrat and boat tours via Tiqets.

Hi Duncan, cool article! What do you think about the Hola Barcelona pass? Is it worth buying to save on public transport? We want to do the standard, I guess: Montserrat, Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Montjuic, Picasso Museum, maybe Poble Espanyol, or Aquarium. 5 days, Mon to Fri. Thanks in advance!

Czesc Natka

The Hola Barcelona Pass is pretty decent, as I believe you get the special airport metro fare included. You will probably save money vs. buying single tickets everywhere you go.

HOWEVER, I think 8/10 times you are going to save more money buying a T-Casual, which gives you 10 journeys on public transport for €11:35, with no time limit (or a time limit of several months).

https://www.tmb.cat/en/barcelona-fares-metro-bus/single-and-integrated/t-casual

You don’t get airport metro ticket included though (although personally I prefer to take the Aerobus anyhow, as I find it fast, convenient and still reasonably priced).

Hi Duncan Very good article I have a question we are a couple traveling to Barcelona on march interested in seeing sagarada familia, park guell, football stadium and the hop off and on bus. We don’t want like a schedule to do things just to enjoy and walk around wich card do you recommend. Thank You

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding your question, unfortunately these days tickets to popular attractions come with a specified time slot, meaning it’s no longer really viable to do the major sights in an ad hoc fashion. You have to plan a bit in advance. That’s true no matter which pass you buy, or which portal you get the tickets from, including the official websites, so there’s no way around it I’m afraid.

For your needs, I’d personally probably go for the Barcelona Pass and use the tourist bus to round up all those attractions in one day. Sagrada Familia maybe 10am, Park Guell at noon, lunch, then Camp Nou at 3pm, and then ride the bus over Montjuic in the late afternoon, as it’s very nice up there and some good views ( https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona/montjuic ). After you buy the Barcelona Pass, you should be able to buy the Camp Nou tickets with 10% discount via Tiqets.com.

That way you’ve done your sightseeing on Day 1 and can spend the rest of your trip walking around some cool districts like the Gothic Quarter, Born, Gracia or just go shopping, bar hopping or to the beach!

Note: the Go City Passes do cover your needs too, but with Go City you book a guided tour to the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell (not just entry tickets), meaning less flexibility about what times you can choose from. But maybe check them out in case the times work for you.

Hello, we want to visit Sagrada Famiglia, Casa Milo, Batllo, Park Guell and Picasso Can u suggest a city pass for all of this atractions and can i use them twice for the same places?

Hi Merlin, yes either of the Go City Passes will get you entry to those five attractions. However, you can only visit each attraction once, as far as I know.

' src=

Thank you for this great article! I’ve managed to use your discount on the Go City card 🙂

Well done Iva! Have fun in Barcelona 😎

Duncan, Thanks for your prompt response. Most useful. Have a nice day. Warm Regards Dinyar

on the go explorer pass are there skip the line tours

Yes, you can select Sagrada Familia or Park Guell skip-the-line tours with the Go Explorer Pass, and you will enter the attraction at the allotted time without queuing more than a few minutes… you do have to be on time though!

In general every advance ticket is a ‘skip the line’ ticket (the phrase ‘skip-the-line’ comes from the times when most tourists would simply turn up at the gates and form a line, but most people now plan in advance, esp. for the big attractions).

Hi Duncan, Intend visiting Barcelona in May this year and based on your recommendations am planning to buy the 4-choice Explorer Pass to cover Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Batlo & Cable Car to Montjuic. Q.1 How do I get to use the guide for the first 2 attractions with this pass? Do I get him/her on site? Q.2 When visiting Casa Batlo is some audio facility available? Q.3 Is cable car experience to Montjuic worthwhile or do you recommend another attraction. Q.4 When booking do I have to specify which 4 attractions I will be availing. Look forward to receiving your response. Thanks. Dinyar

With Sagrada Familia, after buying the pass, you will have to reserve a slot for La Sagrada Familia (I believe GoCity will send you a link to a booking calendar, or a calendar will pop up from their page) either on a morning tour (Monday to Saturday at 09:30) or an afternoon tour (15:30).

Same situation for Park Guell, but different timetables. In May, looks like you can choose from 12:15, 15:45 or 18:15 each day.

For Casa Batllo you’re essentially getting their standard ‘Blue ticket’, which includes Audio Guide and Gaudi Cube (360 degrees media exhibit).

Montjuic is really cool place to visit, with loads of attractions. You can read more here:

The cable car is fun, with great views from the sky, and helpful if you want to get to the very top of the hill (which is a steep walk). However it’s only a few minutes ride, so it’s only a short trip. At the top of the hill is Montjuic Castle (it’s a fortress not a castle though), and great views over the commercial port.

If you wanted to get more value from your pass, you could use your fourth attraction slot to get into one of the more expensive attractions, like La Pedrera (aka Casa Mila), and just buy the cable car ticket.

Duncan, I just read your article and went to the link for the GO Pass, All Inclusive pass. We are going to Barcelona in late November for one week. We ended up getting the 5-day pass and it looks like we can see a lot while riding the double-decker buses to get to the attractions. I wanted to say thank you for your wonderful article that explained all of the pass options. I honestly think the one we got is the best value for your money, but if someone is only going for a day or two, I can see how one of the others might work better. If you have any other advice or suggestions, I will gladly listen to your wise words. Thank you for your help.

Hi Kevin, yes I think the Go Pass is the best on the market right now, especially if you’re staying a bit longer, as you say.

None of the passes include a flamenco show these days, but there are some from just €20 on my dedicated page:

https://www.barcelona-life.com/barcelona/flamenco

Have a great time in the city!

The link to compo does not work.

I would like a card if it pays off

We want to visit -The Sagrada Familia – Park Guell – Montjuïc Cable Car, one the way – Hop on off bus – Metro

Yes, this article is going to need a quite intensive update following the pandemic. Things are still in flux a bit. One card that has reestablished itself is the Barcelona Pass , available now on Tiqets, and it has EXACTLY what you’re looking for (except the metro… but you can buy a T-Casual card for just 10 or 11 euros and use that to get around)! Please can you help !

There are 14 of us traveling to Barcelona on the 2nd jan returning on the 5th jan .

We have 6 teenagers 4 kids 4 adults

We basically Need a card for 4 days which gives us access to : Airport transfers ( using the metro) to noval hotel and back Metro use whilst out there and hop and on bus to get around

We want to see the La Sagrada Park Guell Picasso museum Football stadium if free ( not a must) Boat trip would be amazing Zoo ( possibly ) Any late night showes ( not essential but fun) Aquarium (if possible )

As we will all spilt but need access to public transport the whole time out there. Our hotel is noval Barcelona metro is across the rd

Am confused to if we get the Barcelona combo which seems like the best option is that per person and how many days ? Do You offer a family card which is cheaper and I have also looked at the I venture card that gives y out access for 7 days .

We need a card from 2nd jan until 5th jan your help will be much appreciated.

I hope to hear from You very soon as I need to book these cards and the best option plz

Hi Henna, yes it looks like Barcelona Combo is best option for you. The Combo is actually the official Barcelona Tourist Card, plus a package of Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Flamenco Show and Boat Trip added on top, at a discount price.

So you essentially are buying the Barcelona Card (you choose the duration, 3, 4 or 5 days), and that gives you free public transport, including metro to and from airport, and free Picasso Museum (plus many other museums). And then, in addition to the Card benefits, you also get the Combo bonuses as well (Sagrada Familia etc!), and you can choose the timing of those.

The Card would give you a discount on the Zoo and Aquarium (but not Camp Nou) if you did decide you wanted to visit any of those!

Hope that helps clarify things for you!

Ps. I don’t know of any family cards, but the Combo package is cheaper for those under 12 years old.

Hi Do you know if the night tour of La Pedrera is included in any of these tickets, please?

Many thanks

Yes, La Pedrera’s real name is Casa Mila.

You can see on the table that it is free with the Barcelona Pass.

Enjoy your travels!

Sorry, just realised you specified the night tour. Nope, that’s not included in any package. But you can purchase via Get Your Guide .

Barcelona Card: 26 Free Attractions + Unlimited Transit & Discounts

barcelona card discount travel pass

The Barcelona Card is a tourist pass for those looking to save money on holiday.

It’s a a smart card with an NFC chip that grants free entry to 26 museums, discounts on 30+ attractions, and unlimited transport (including airport) .

It plays a bit like a wrist band at an all-inclusive resort – only your hotel is the city of Barcelona.

But is the Barcelona Card worth it? Let’s take a deeper look.

Where to Buy the Barcelona Card

Already in the know? You can buy this Barcelona tourist discount card via the official Barcelona Tourism Office.

Clicking the button below gets you   a special 10% online discount that is not found on location in Barcelona.

The Barcelona Card: Free Entry + Discounts

I’ll be honest – if you’re going to spend most of your time lounging on Barcelona’s best beaches and devouring tapas by the tub load, the Barcelona Card may not be for you.

That said, if you’re visiting Barcelona for the culture then it’s something to really consider.

Let’s look at what’s in the pass, then we’ll get into prices and potential value.

What’s Included in the Barcelona Card?

  • Unlimited Transport : bus, the Barcelona metro , tram, overland rail, and the Montjuic funicular.
  • Free Airport Transfer : (metro, train, or bus)  from Barcelona airport to city centre .
  • Free Skip the Line Admission to 25 Museums : including the Picasso Museum , Moco Museum, the Antoni Tàpies Foundation, the Joan Mirò Foundation, MACBA, MNAC, CCCB, the Chocolate Museum, and more.

How Much is the Barcelona Card? 2024 Prices

As noted before, ticket window prices are 10% higher so if you’re gonna do it, make sure you buy your Barcelona Cards online.

When booking with the button above you’ll also have free cancellation passes (up to 24 hours before).

The Barcelona Card Express: 48 Hours

The Barcelona Card Express is a 48 hour free public transport pass for those visiting Barcelona with less time.

The only difference between this and other Barcelona Card options is there are no free admission to museums included – only discounts for the main Barcelona attractions (there’s a discount list here ).

48 hours : €27.00   €23.30 (online)

Clicking the button below gets you a 10% discount booking online with Barcelona Tourism Office.

Is the Barcelona Card Worth It?

Let’s take a look at transport first – remembering that single metro and bus tickets cost €2.55 .

A conservative average of four trips a day over a 3 day stay costs €10.20 a day x 3 = €30.60.

Factor in return airport transfer for two more trips (remember, there’s free airport transfer) and we’re up to €38.70 for transport without the card .

Now let’s throw in the Picasso Museum .

Your free admission at this must-see museum costs €17.00 – bringing us to €55.70 .

painting of three birds at the picasso museum in barcelona spain

How Much Money Does the Barcelona Card Save Me?

As you can see, on a 72 hour Barcelona Card worth €49.50 we’re €6.20 in ‘profit’ visiting only the Picasso Museum – not even using the 24 other Barcelona museum options and 30+ popular attractions discounts.

The Moco Museum , another must-see that’s included, is a €19.00 value and brings us to €25.20 in savings very quickly.

Throw in a €7.00 savings at can’t-miss Casa Batlló , La Pedrera, a walking tour, the Fundació Joan Miró, and Tibidabo Amusement Park and you can start to save money for real.

For legit sightseers this all-inclusive Barcelona tourist pass makes perfect sense.

The average tourist can expect to save between €30.00 and €40.00 – that’s a “free” paella dinner with wine tacked onto your trip just for a couple mouse clicks from home.

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

barcelona 10 trip card

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

barcelona 10 trip card

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

barcelona 10 trip card

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

barcelona 10 trip card

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

barcelona 10 trip card

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Visa Bulletin For May 2024

Number 89 Volume X Washington, D.C

View as Printer Friendly PDF

A. STATUTORY NUMBERS FOR PREFERENCE IMMIGRANT VISAS

This bulletin summarizes the availability of immigrant numbers during May  for: “Final Action Dates” and “Dates for Filing Applications,” indicating when immigrant visa applicants should be notified to assemble and submit required documentation to the National Visa Center.

Unless otherwise indicated on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website at  www.uscis.gov/visabulletininfo , individuals seeking to file applications for adjustment of status with USCIS must use the “Final Action Dates” charts below for determining when they can file such applications. When USCIS determines that there are more immigrant visas available for the fiscal year than there are known applicants for such visas, USCIS will state on its website that applicants may instead use the “Dates for Filing Visa Applications” charts in this Bulletin.

1.  Procedures for determining dates. Consular officers are required to report to the Department of State documentarily qualified applicants for numerically limited visas; USCIS reports applicants for adjustment of status. Allocations in the charts below were made, to the extent possible, in chronological order of reported priority dates, for demand received by April 1st . If not all demand could be satisfied, the category or foreign state in which demand was excessive was deemed oversubscribed. The final action date for an oversubscribed category is the priority date of the first applicant who could not be reached within the numerical limits. If it becomes necessary during the monthly allocation process to retrogress a final action date, supplemental requests for numbers will be honored only if the priority date falls within the new final action date announced in this bulletin. If at any time an annual limit were reached, it would be necessary to immediately make the preference category “unavailable”, and no further requests for numbers would be honored.

2.  The fiscal year 2024 limit for family-sponsored preference immigrants determined in accordance with Section 201 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is 226,000.  The worldwide level for annual employment-based preference immigrants is at least 140,000.  Section 202 prescribes that the per-country limit for preference immigrants is set at 7% of the total annual family-sponsored and employment-based preference limits, i.e., 25,620.  The dependent area limit is set at 2%, or 7,320.

3.  INA Section 203(e) provides that family-sponsored and employment-based preference visas be issued to eligible immigrants in the order in which a petition in behalf of each has been filed. Section 203(d) provides that spouses and children of preference immigrants are entitled to the same status, and the same order of consideration, if accompanying or following to join the principal. The visa prorating provisions of Section 202(e) apply to allocations for a foreign state or dependent area when visa issuances will exceed the per-country limit. These provisions apply at present to the following oversubscribed chargeability areas:  CHINA-mainland born, INDIA, MEXICO, and PHILIPPINES.

4.  Section 203(a) of the INA prescribes preference classes for allotment of Family-sponsored immigrant visas as follows:

FAMILY-SPONSORED PREFERENCES

First : ( F1 ) Unmarried Sons and Daughters of U.S. Citizens:  23,400 plus any numbers not required for fourth preference.

Second : Spouses and Children, and Unmarried Sons and Daughters of Permanent Residents:  114,200, plus the number (if any) by which the worldwide family preference level exceeds 226,000, plus any unused first preference numbers:

A. ( F2A ) Spouses and Children of Permanent Residents:  77% of the overall second preference limitation, of which 75% are exempt from the per-country limit;

B. ( F2B ) Unmarried Sons and Daughters (21 years of age or older) of Permanent Residents:  23% of the overall second preference limitation.

Third : ( F3 ) Married Sons and Daughters of U.S. Citizens:  23,400, plus any numbers not required by first and second preferences.

Fourth : ( F4 ) Brothers and Sisters of Adult U.S. Citizens:  65,000, plus any numbers not required by first three preferences.

A.   FINAL ACTION DATES FOR FAMILY-SPONSORED PREFERENCE CASES

On the chart below, the listing of a date for any class indicates that the class is oversubscribed (see paragraph 1); "C" means current, i.e., numbers are authorized for issuance to all qualified applicants; and "U" means unauthorized, i.e., numbers are not authorized for issuance. (NOTE: Numbers are authorized for issuance only for applicants whose priority date is earlier than the final action date listed below.)

For May, F2A numbers  EXEMPT from per-country limit  are authorized for issuance to applicants from all countries with priority dates  earlier  than 08NOV20. F2A numbers  SUBJECT to per-country limit  are authorized for issuance to applicants chargeable to all countries EXCEPT MEXICO , with priority dates beginning 08NOV20 and earlier than 01JUN21. All F2A numbers provided for MEXICO are exempt from the per-country limit.

B.  DATES FOR FILING FAMILY-SPONSORED VISA APPLICATIONS

The chart below reflects dates for filing visa applications within a timeframe justifying immediate action in the application process. Applicants for immigrant visas who have a priority date earlier than the application date in the chart below may assemble and submit required documents to the Department of State’s National Visa Center, following receipt of notification from the National Visa Center containing detailed instructions. The application date for an oversubscribed category is the priority date of the first applicant who cannot submit documentation to the National Visa Center for an immigrant visa. If a category is designated “current,” all applicants in the relevant category may file applications, regardless of priority date.

The “C” listing indicates that the category is current, and that applications may be filed regardless of the applicant’s priority date. The listing of a date for any category indicates that only applicants with a priority date which is earlier than the listed date may file their application.

Visit www.uscis.gov/visabulletininfo for information on whether USCIS has determined that this chart can be used (in lieu of the chart in paragraph 4.A.) this month for filing applications for adjustment of status with USCIS.

5.  Section 203(b) of the INA prescribes preference classes for allotment of Employment-based immigrant visas as follows:

EMPLOYMENT-BASED PREFERENCES

First :  Priority Workers:  28.6% of the worldwide employment-based preference level, plus any numbers not required for fourth and fifth preferences.

Second :  Members of the Professions Holding Advanced Degrees or Persons of Exceptional Ability:  28.6% of the worldwide employment-based preference level, plus any numbers not required by first preference.

Third :  Skilled Workers, Professionals, and Other Workers:  28.6% of the worldwide level, plus any numbers not required by first and second preferences, not more than 10,000 of which to "*Other Workers".

Fourth :  Certain Special Immigrants:  7.1% of the worldwide level.

Fifth :  Employment Creation:  7.1% of the worldwide level, of which 32% are reserved as follows: 20% reserved for qualified immigrants who invest in a rural area; 10% reserved for qualified immigrants who invest in a high unemployment area; and 2% reserved for qualified immigrants who invest in infrastructure projects. The remaining 68% are unreserved and are allotted for all other qualified immigrants.

A.  FINAL ACTION DATES FOR EMPLOYMENT-BASED PREFERENCE CASES

*Employment Third Preference Other Workers Category: Section 203(e) of the Nicaraguan and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) passed by Congress in November 1997, as amended by Section 1(e) of Pub. L. 105-139, provides that once the Employment Third Preference Other Worker (EW) cut-off date has reached the priority date of the latest EW petition approved prior to November 19, 1997, the 10,000 EW numbers available for a fiscal year are to be reduced by up to 5,000 annually beginning in the following fiscal year. This reduction is to be made for as long as necessary to offset adjustments under the NACARA program. Since the EW final action date reached November 19, 1997 during Fiscal Year 2001, the reduction in the EW annual limit to 5,000 began in Fiscal Year 2002. For Fiscal Year 2024 this reduction will be limited to approximately 150.

B.  DATES FOR FILING OF EMPLOYMENT-BASED VISA APPLICATIONS

The chart below reflects dates for filing visa applications within a timeframe justifying immediate action in the application process. Applicants for immigrant visas who have a priority date earlier than the application date in the chart may assemble and submit required documents to the Department of State’s National Visa Center, following receipt of notification from the National Visa Center containing detailed instructions. The application date for an oversubscribed category is the priority date of the first applicant who cannot submit documentation to the National Visa Center for an immigrant visa. If a category is designated “current,” all applicants in the relevant category may file, regardless of priority date.

Visit www.uscis.gov/visabulletininfo for information on whether USCIS has determined that this chart can be used (in lieu of the chart in paragraph 5.A.) this month for filing applications for adjustment of status with USCIS.

B .   DIVERSITY IMMIGRANT (DV) CATEGORY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY

Section 203(c) of the INA provides up to 55,000 immigrant visas each fiscal year to permit additional immigration opportunities for persons from countries with low admissions during the previous five years.  The NACARA stipulates that beginning with DV-99, and for as long as necessary, up to 5,000 of the 55,000 annually allocated diversity visas will be made available for use under the NACARA program.  Visa numbers made available to NACARA applicants in FY 2023 will result in reduction of the DV-2024 annual limit to approximately 54,850.  Section 5104 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024 amended the NACARA’s provisions on the Diversity Visa program such that the number of visas made available under the NDAA will be deducted from the 55,000 DVs annually allocated.  These amendments will not impact the number of diversity visas available until FY 2025.  DVs are divided among six geographic regions. No one country can receive more than seven percent of the available diversity visas in any one year.

For May , immigrant numbers in the DV category are available to qualified DV-2024 applicants chargeable to all regions/eligible countries as follows. When an allocation cut-off number is shown, visas are available only for applicants with DV regional lottery rank numbers  BELOW  the specified allocation cut-off number:

Entitlement to immigrant status in the DV category lasts only through the end of the fiscal (visa) year for which the applicant is selected in the lottery. The year of entitlement for all applicants registered for the DV-2024 program ends as of September 30, 2024. DV visas may not be issued to DV-2024 applicants after that date. Similarly, spouses and children accompanying or following to join DV-2024 principals are only entitled to derivative DV status until September 30, 2024. DV visa availability through the very end of FY-2024 cannot be taken for granted. Numbers could be exhausted prior to September 30.

C.   THE DIVERSITY (DV) IMMIGRANT CATEGORY RANK CUT-OFFS WHICH WILL APPLY IN JUNE

For June , immigrant numbers in the DV category are available to qualified DV-2024 applicants chargeable to all regions/eligible countries as follows. When an allocation cut-off number is shown, visas are available only for applicants with DV regional lottery rank numbers  BELOW  the specified allocation cut-off number:

D.   EMPLOYMENT FOURTH PREFERENCE (SR) RELIGIOUS WORKERS CATEGOY EXTENDED

H.R. 2882, signed on March 23, 2024, extended the Employment Fourth Preference Certain Religious Workers (SR) category until September 30, 2024.  No SR visas may be issued overseas, or final action taken on adjustment of status cases, after midnight September 29, 2024.  Visas issued prior to that date will be valid only until September 29, 2024, and all individuals seeking admission in the non-minister special immigrant category must be admitted (repeat admitted) into the United States no later than midnight September 29, 2024.

The SR category is subject to the same final action dates as the other Employment Fourth Preference categories per applicable foreign state of chargeability.

E.   ANNUAL WAITING LIST REPORT OF IMMIGRANT VISA APPLICANTS IN THE FAMILY-SPONSORED AND EMPLOYMENT-BASED PREFERENCES REGISTERED AT THE NATIONAL VISA CENTER AS OF NOVEMBER 1, 2023

The National Visa Center has provided the totals of applicants who are registered in the various numerically-limited immigrant categories for processing at overseas posts.  This information is available on the Consular Affairs www.travel.state.gov website.  The direct link to the item is:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-statistics/immigrant-visa-statistics.html

F.   U.S. GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE SPECIAL IMMIGRANT VISAS (SIVs)

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024, signed into law on December 22, 2023, may affect certain current and former employees of the U.S. Government abroad applying for SIVs or adjustment of status, as described in section 101(a)(27)(D) of the INA.  This does not affect certain Iraqis and Afghans applying for SQ and SI SIVs.  Applicants should contact the consular section at which they filed their Form DS‑1884 for further information on the impact of that law on their case.
