4. The stadium

Thomond Park Stadium is home to Munster Rugby, Shannon RFC and UL Bohemian RFC. It was redeveloped in 2007/2008 and now has a capacity of 25,600.

About Thomond Park

Thomond Park Stadium opened in 1934. In the early days, the stadium had 2 pitches; a training pitch and the main match-day pitch.

Like many stadiums at the time, it had terracing, which are a series of concrete steps, that surrounded the main pitch.

Several redevelopments took place over the years. The first was between 1998 and 1999 when several million pounds were spent to introduce a new pitch, medical facilities, floodlighting and more to the grounds.

A second, much larger redevelopment took place not long after, in 2007. This took the grounds seating capacity to 25,630.

Thomond Park reopened in 2008 and this milestone event was marked with a match between Munster and the All Blacks.

In 2013, the stadium won the illustrious title of ‘Best Rugby Stadium in the World’, after a vote by rugby fans across the world.

What to expect from the Thomond Park Museum Tour

2. Before moving into the interactive museum

After your tour of the stadium, you’ll move into the interactive museum that immerses you in the stadiums past.

This state of the art museum includes a screening of the specially commissioned movie ‘We Are Munster’, which tells the story of the club and the bond it shares with its supporters.

Memorial Park's par-4 17th will play drivable in final round of Texas Children’s Houston Open

Memorial park’s 17th hole is reconfigured for 2024, green pushed back 30 yards from water’s edge.

Change Text Size

HOUSTON – Memorial Park Golf Course's short par-4 17th hole has traditionally played a two-shot hole for most of the Texas Children’s Houston Open field, even when the tee was moved up to create a drivable opportunity. With the previous green complex situated just beyond the water’s edge, the risk-reward wasn’t there.

That is set to change Sunday, with the tee box moved up to play 329 yards and players attacking a new green complex that will entice bold plays.

The 17th green complex has been reconfigured for this year’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, with 30 yards of fairway now separating the green and the water’s edge. The green was previously situated just 5 yards from the water’s edge, limiting players’ incentive to drive the green even from a forward tee that made carrying the water no problem – it was just too hard to stop the ball on the green, players and officials said this week.

The hole’s scorecard length has been extended from 382 yards to 405 yards, which has increased the hole’s difficulty from the tips – the hole has played to a 4.173 average through three rounds in 2024, using the back tee in all rounds, after playing to 4.005 a season ago. Water down the hole’s right side has required players to be cautious off the tee, while playing more club off the tee if a wedge approach is desired (or laying back off the tee, then taking more club into the green). It ranked as Memorial Park’s fifth toughest hole through three rounds in 2024, after ranking No. 13 in difficulty last season.

But the tee has been moved up for Sunday's final round, the hole playing to 329 yards. The carry distance, roughly 280 yards, will be no trouble for the field, but will players be willing to accept the risk of bunkers left and water right? We’ll soon find out.

“I think it's a good change,” said world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who was among five players tied for the lead after the conclusion of Round 3. “I think they had tried to move the tee box up a couple times in the last few years to make it drivable and with the way the green was, it just wasn't a hole that you would really try to drive.

"But now the way the green is shaped, you have an area where you can run it up. I think they'll have the tee box moved up on the weekend and it should be a pretty exciting way to finish off the tournament. I think the changes are really good."

Tom Doak, who resigned the course in 2019, believed that the event’s penultimate hole should feature a high level of risk-reward, whereas this event’s previous three iterations at Memorial Park saw a conventional strategy employed at No. 17. Hence the changes around the green for 2024.

“We looked at the history of the past three tournaments that we’ve played here, and obviously getting player feedback as well, and we’ve had some great discussions and this is what Tom came up with,” said TOUR Senior Tournament Referee Robby Ware earlier this week. “He’s done a really nice job, and excited to see how it plays out this week.”

The teeing area, fairway contouring and fairway width have remained unchanged, said Ware this week, but the area around the green has changed substantially. Two bunkers have been added left of the green, making a left bailout shot more difficult (water hugs the hole’s entire right side, from the fairway through the green.) The green now slopes left-to-right as well, meaning a pitch from left of the green will require players to keep the water in mind.

It's a bold change that will force players to decide down the stretch at Memorial Park: go for an eagle putt, or play a safer tee shot for a wedge approach?

“From the back tee it doesn't change the hole tremendously, but with the tee up it's very much a cool drivable hole now,” added last week’s Valspar Championship winner Peter Malnati, who made the cut on the number at Memorial Park. “I think it will be fun to watch guys have a go at it because … obviously if you go for it, likely miss would be left of the green. The green slopes toward the water from left of the green, so you have to see some guys do some great short game in.

“Maybe they'll make it drivable on Sunday and you'll see someone step up and make a really bold play and hit one right on the green and have an eagle putt on Sunday. I think that would be really cool.”

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

What a handy guide to get the most of Moscow’s red square! I’ve always wanted to try a walking tour and this looks like the perfect place to start!

I really enjoy walking tours, I think they are a great way to get to know a new place!

You have highlighted all the main sights around and in the Red Square indeed! I have visited Moscow in winter and the atmosphere was magical…even though it was cold 🙂 I’m looking forward to visiting in summer too!

Yes, there is a magical feel during the winter. I have to say I prefer the warmer, brighter summers though 🙂

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. Please check out my other posts as you are planning your trip and feel free to send any questions my way!

I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!

I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

Pinehurst #10 opened this week. Want to play it?

This muni costs $28 to play. Here’s why PGA Tour pros were raving about it

At last week's Texas Children's Houston Open, course conditions earned Augusta-like raves.

Getty Images

It’s a tradition unlike any other, and it plays out every spring, when professional golfers gush over the pristine conditions at a storied tournament site. This year, though, the world’s best players weren’t going gaga over Augusta National . They were heaping praise on Memorial Park. Last week’s host of the Texas Children’s Houston Open could hardly be more different than the home of the Masters.

Where Augusta is private, with a boundless maintenance budget and a course that shutters throughout the summer, Memorial Park is a muni, open year-round, with green fees for locals that max out at $28. And yet to hear the rave reviews in Houston last week, you might have thought the players were referring to a certain course in Georgia.

How did Memorial Park, a bargain-priced track that logs upward of 50,000 rounds a year, manage to earn the kind of plaudits normally reserved for the game’s most famously manicured venue?

Parker Henry, a longtime member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America , is the superintendent at Memorial Park. We asked him how he and his fellow city employees pulled it off.

A scheduling switch and an overseed

For the past three years, the tournament was held in the fall on a warm-season canvas of Bermuda grass. This year, though, the event was moved to the spring, when Bermuda is dormant. To prepare the course for elite competition, Henry and his team took a page from the Augusta National playbook and overseeded the course in the fall with cool-season rye. Overseeding is a resource-intensive and expensive process, but Henry and his team were strategic. They studied Google maps to see which areas were most in need, and, with help from the PGA Tour, they studied stats from the past three years to learn where errant shots tended to land. Only those areas and important playing corridors got overseeded. Then, to give the cool-season rye a chance to get established, Memorial Park closed down for three weeks in November.

The upside of dry weather

The past year was dry in Houston, which put additional strain on Memorial Park’s turf. To protect the course during that trying period, management implemented a cart-path-only policy. “That was really a saving grace for us,” Henry says. “Because it spared us a lot of the wear and tear from the 40,000 or so cart rounds we get a year.”

Ramping up divot and ball-mark repair

Henry oversees a staff of 20 full-time city employees and 10 full-time contractors, a relatively large crew for a municipal course. But prepping for a tournament called for extra hands. In the months leading up to the event, with volunteers pitching in, Henry and his beefed-up maintenance team filled divots on tee boxes every day, and divots in the fairways twice a month. On the greens, meanwhile, they logged extra hours repairing pitch marks every seven to 10 days. They also top-dressed periodically with sand and seeded in areas that needed additional TLC.

Reconfiguring the tee sheet

Unlike Augusta, Memorial Park doesn’t have the option of shutting down for prolonged stretches. But this year, it put some limits in place. Starting on March 1, four weeks before the competition kicked off, the course moved away from conventional tee times and instead offered a single shotgun start per day. Then, on Monday, March 18, one week before the pros arrived for practice rounds, the course shut down to public play. Not only did that give the turf a chance to recover from routine wear and tear, it also served as a safety measure, keeping the public clear of construction as tournament infrastructure was put in place.

Getting the greens up to speed

For a PGA Tour event, lightning-fast greens are pretty much required. But they aren’t ideal for busy public play. For starters, tightly mown turf is more vulnerable to the wear and tear of heavy traffic. What’s more, speedy putting surfaces are challenging for amateurs and can bog down the pace of play. Henry knew better than to try to get the greens ready overnight. His approach was slow and steady. “The focus was really on creating healthy turf,” Henry says. With the robust putting surfaces established, Henry was able to ramp the green speeds gradually, starting about two weeks prior to the event. In that way, greens that ran roughly 10 to 10. 5 on the Stimpmeter for daily play were ready to be slicked up for tournament week, when the target speed was 12 on the Stimp.

Actions in the aftermath

In the wake of a big-time tournament event, everyone — and everything — needs a breather, turf included. The after day after this year’s tournament was given over to a hasty tear-down of infrastructure, and the course was closed to public play. Tuesday was another day of respite. Regular public rounds did not resume til Wednesday. For Henry and his team, a top priority in the coming weeks is tending to the areas that took the heaviest beating during the event. “We’ll start working on those high traffic areas and make sure the turf is ready to wake up as the weather warms,” Henry says. Their work will also include extra care for shaded portions of the course where the turf might have been weak heading into the overseed. In the worse-worn of areas, Henry says, he and his crew might have to go so far as to lay down sod. “We just want to make sure that we get back to being fully Bermuda,” Henry says. Until next fall, when the cycle of tournament prep will begin again.
