UK weather: Further weather warnings issued after snow temporarily closes Manchester Airport

Temperatures plunged below minus 10C (14F) in parts of the UK overnight amid warnings of snow, ice and travel disruption

Snow on the wing of a plane at Manchester Airport on Thursday morning

The Met Office has issued another series of yellow weather warnings for ice covering south-west England, Wales, northern and south-west Scotland and Northern Ireland continuing into Friday.

A yellow warning for ice in northwest England has been issued by the Met Office for 5pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday covering the East Midlands, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire.

A snow and ice warning for the same area, is in place until 12pm on Thursday. The warnings also extend across the southwest, Wales, northeast Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The warnings come after Manchester Airport temporarily closed both its runways due to heavy snowfall this morning. The airport has since reopened.

Temperatures plunged below minus 10C (14F) in parts of the UK overnight amid warnings of snow, ice and travel disruption.

Drumnadrochit near Inverness in the Highlands hit minus 10.4C (13.28F) in the early hours of Thursday, making it the coldest recorded temperature of the year so far.

As Topcliffe in north Yorkshire got down to minus 7.4C (18.68F), the coldest in England, Manchester Airport was forced to close its runways.

Trafalgar square fountains freeze in sub zero temperatures

A statement on Twitter said: "Following a period of heavy snowfall, we have temporarily closed both runways.

"Health and safety will always be our top priority and operations will resume at the earliest opportunity.

"Passengers are advised to contact their airline for the most up-to-date flight information."

Susie Wallace, a 47-year-old IT security manager from Liverpool, has been stuck at Manchester Airport since 5am for her flight to Morocco

Ms Wallace , speaking from inside the plane, said: “Given the forecasts this week and given the weather yesterday I’m finding it hard to comprehend that they weren’t working on this much earlier.

"Arriving in the airport there was absolutely no sign or notice that flights would be impacted.

“It feels like they just want people in there spending money, or really a manager just woke up or turned up for work and that’s when they started dealing with the situation.”

Weather warnings

A series of yellow weather warnings for snow and ice from the Met Office came in as a major incident was declared in Somerset due to the risk of flooding.

The warnings covering northern and south-west Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales suggest there may be "further wintry showers bringing disruption from ice and snow" while an ice warning is also in place for the south west of England.

They run until noon on Thursday in Wales and the north of Scotland while the ice warning lasts until 10am in England.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "Parts of north-west Scotland still have 34cm of snow lying, elsewhere this is around 9cm, and in sites across Northern Ireland we've got 7cm, and in Wales as well.

"The main thing elsewhere is frost and ice, showers are focused towards the north and west of the UK, so elsewhere a frosty and icy, but dry start.

"Lighter winds in the south on Thursday, so it's not going to feel quite as raw, even though temperatures are still cold, there will be less of a wind chill effect.

"Gradually it will turn less cold over the next few days, we hold onto it generally today and tomorrow, but into the weekend Atlantic air starts to come in, bringing temperatures up to double figures."

A car is stranded in floodwaters on Langport Road, near Muchelney, Somerset

A level three cold weather alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency, warning of conditions that "could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services" is in place until 9am on Friday.

A major incident was declared in Somerset due to the risk of flooding across the county.

Enhanced pumping began on Tuesday evening at Northmoor pumping station to reduce the amount of water being stored until river levels allow pumping to resume at Currymoor, which remains full.

Seven day forecast for manchester.

Our weather symbols tell you the weather conditions for any given hour in the day or night. This means that the symbol for 9am shows you what you will see from 9am to 10am.

Chance of precipitation represents how likely it is that rain (or other types of precipitation, such as sleet, snow, hail or drizzle) will fall from the sky at a certain time.

This number shows the air temperature for the time period. You can see the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit by using the dropdown menu.

Feels like temperature considers other factors, such as wind speed and humidity. This gives you a better idea of how the temperature will actually feel at the time.

Wind gust shows the highest wind speed that you should encounter at that time, as winds peak and lull.

Strong winds are shown in bold for speeds of 29 mph or more.

The arrow shows the direction the wind is blowing. The letters show the direction the wind is blowing from (on a standard 16-point compass).

The number represents the average wind speed expected at that time.

The arrow shows the direction of the wind (up is north). If the arrow points from land to sea, the wind will be blowing out to sea (‘offshore’). The number is the average wind speed.

Beware of offshore winds if you are using inflatables, paddle boards or kayaks. These winds can blow you out to sea. Read more about how wind will affect you at the beach.

Visibility measures the distance at which an object can be clearly seen.

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. If there is a lot of water vapour, the humidity will be high. The higher the percentage of humidity, the wetter it will feel outside.

UV exposure index and the protection required to help keep you safe:

- No risk of UV - It’s safe to stay outside. 1-2 Low - You can safely stay outside. Consider sunscreen in direct sunlight. 3-5 Moderate - Take care during midday hours and do not spend too much time in the sun unprotected. Sunscreen advised. 6-7 High - Seek shade during midday hours, cover up and wear sunscreen. 8-10 Very high - Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm. Shirt, sunscreen and hat are essential. 11 Extreme - Avoid being outside during midday hours. Shirt, sunscreen and hat essential.

This is the average height of the waves, 1-2 miles out to sea. The height of the waves can vary. The individual waves out to sea or at the beach can be higher than this number. If you are close to the water, keep an eye on the waves to stop you or your belongings being swept away.

Read more about calculating the expected height of the waves at the beach.

This is the average number of seconds between one wave and the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. A long wave period (more than 10 seconds) means the waves at the beach may be more powerful. Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

Read more about the period of waves.

The arrow shows the average direction of the waves 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the beach will be from these waves. If the arrow points towards land, most of the waves’ power will reach the beach. If the arrow is parallel to or pointing away from land, the wave height is likely to be lower on the beach than it is offshore.

Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

UK long range weather forecast

Tuesday 9 apr - thursday 18 apr.

The ongoing unsettled spell of weather is likely to continue through to mid-April with little sign of any dramatic improvement. All areas can expect to see showers or longer spells of rain at times, with western hills likely to see the largest rainfall totals. Likewise, further windy spells are expected at times. That said, there are likely to be some spells of more settled weather, especially perhaps in southern areas in the first week of this period. Going forward however, such occurrences will probably be short-lived, with the greatest chance of these again in the south during the middle of this period. Above average temperatures are most likely, albeit often tempered by cloud, rain and occasional strong winds.

Updated: 15:00 (UTC+1) on Thu 4 Apr 2024

Friday 19 Apr - Friday 3 May

Through the second half of April and the beginning of May, there is no strong signal for any one weather pattern to dominate over another. As such, further rain and showers are likely at times, but there is also a reasonable chance of some drier and sunnier spells of weather, perhaps most-likely in the south. Temperatures most likely near or a little above normal for the period as a whole.

UK weather: Warning of 70mph winds as Storm Kathleen moves in

A mixed picture is forecast for Saturday as parts of southeast England could top Portugal and bask in temperatures in the low 20s.

Friday 5 April 2024 03:09, UK

Pic: Met Office

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for wind, rain and snow across the UK from today.

On Saturday, almost the entire west coast of England, Wales and Scotland - and all of Northern Ireland - will be affected by strong wind as Storm Kathleen hits.

Gusts of 50mph are widely expected and exposed places could see 60mph to 70mph.

The Met Office said it could bring a small risk of injuries and danger to life from waves on the coast.

The warning covers Cornwall, much of Wales, parts of Lancashire and Cumbria, and up into central Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The alert is in place from 8am until 10pm on Saturday.

Travel disruption is also possible and there's a minor risk of power cuts and problems with phone signals, the Met Office added.

However, it's set to be a Saturday of contrasts as other areas could be hotter than Lisbon , with temperatures in the low 20s possible in southeast England.

Storm Kathleen has been named by Ireland's national forecaster Met Eireann, which has issued its own warnings covering the whole country.

Cork, Kerry, Galway and Mayo are set to be worst affected.

They are under an amber alert, meaning "very difficult travel conditions" and potential fallen trees, power outages and coastal flooding.

Snow and rain on Friday

There is also a snow warning from 3am until 9am this morning for a large part of Scotland, meaning the morning commute could be affected for some people.

The alert stretches north from around Stirling to just south of Inverness.

"Snow is likely to cause some travel disruption on Friday morning, particularly on higher routes," the forecaster said.

About 2cm to 5cm is possible above 250m, with 10cm or more above 300m, according to the Met Office.

A separate warning for heavy rain is also in force from 2am to 9am on Friday - covering the Edinburgh and Dunfermline areas across to Scotland's west coast.

The Met Office said it could also cause travel problems and some cases of flooding.

Utilities work to restore power across NH amid widespread outages from snow, wind

Snowplows, like this one in Concord, were a common sight on New Hampshire roads during the spring snowstorm Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Tens of thousands of New Hampshire electric customers were still without power late Thursday night, as heavy snow and strong wind gusts knocked down tree branches and utility poles across the state.

Eversource reported 79,000 customers without power and NH Electric Coop reported 30,000, as of 9:45 p.m. Thursday. Unitil had roughly 10,000 customers without power.

Utility repair crews say they’re seeing broken tree limbs and downed power lines across the region. Heavy, wet snow and strong winds have brought down equipment and made it difficult for crews to make repairs.

Eversource says they have more than 800 crews working across the state, with more help on the way.

Granite Staters should report power outages to their utility and call 9-1-1 if they see a power line that’s fallen over. State officials caution residents never to run a generator indoors.

The storm has already knocked out power to tens of thousands of utility customers in New Hampshire. If you lose power, remember to report the outage to your utility company. Practice power outage safety. A combination of strong winds and high tide led to some minor coastal flooding Thursday morning. Wind gusts topped 50 mph, as freezing rain pummeled the Seacoast area and waves topped seawalls in a number of areas before 8 a.m. Several sidestreets around Ocean Boulevard in Hampton were closed Thursday morning.

Schools across the state closed on Thursday and dozens of districts announced late starts to classes Friday to accomodate cleanup efforts.

With dangerous travel conditions, some public transit services curtailed services over the course of the storm. That includes COAST, which canceled bus service along the Seacoast for Thursday. Manchester Airport recommends customers check with their airlines.

Local utilities say they are preparing for a potentially long and messy cleanup. Alec O'Meara, a spokesperson with Unitil, said snowstorms this time of year can be especially challenging.

"Storms in the spring have the potential to have a lot of wetter, heavier snow with them," he said. "So when snow falls, when it's a little above freezing, it actually becomes that very pasty, wet, sticky snow that sticks to trees and tree limbs and branches and can bring them down."

NHPR's Kate Dario, Mara Hoplamazian and Olivia Richardson contributed to this report.

Up to a foot or more of heavy, wet snow possible in parts of New Hampshire from incoming nor'easter

A strong Nor'easter, bringing wet snow, heavy rain and gusty winds will have a big impact in New Hampshire for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday Night.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the entire state starting Wednesday afternoon through Thursday Evening. A coastal flood watch is also in effect for Thursday AM along the coast.

>> National Weather Service alerts and bulletins

Clouds continue to move in late Tuesday night as lows drop into the 30s.

The initial precipitation is expected to move in late Wednesday morning in southwestern parts of the state in the form of a light wintry mix, and will be increase in intensity late Wednesday and especially Wednesday Evening. >> See the latest hour-by-hour storm timeline for snow, wintry mix and wind gusts :

Travel conditions will likely be at their most difficult later Wednesday into Thursday.

PROJECTED AMOUNTS & PRECIPITATION TYPES

The precipitation should start as a mix of snow and sleet with some pockets of heavy rain at the coastline and in southern communities before eventually changing to snow. Up north, it'll be all snow as it arrives and continue that way for the duration of the event.

The precipitation will likely convert to snow, even in southern areas, early Thursday.

Expect 12-18 inches, or more, of snow across the eastern White Mountains, in the Mount Washington Valley and across parts of the North Country and Lakes Region. About 12-18 inches are also possible in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region. In parts of the northern North Country, the Upper Valley, the Monadnock Region and areas from Concord to Rochester, 6-12 inches are possible. About 3-6 inches could accumulate in far southwestern areas of the state and also from Manchester to Dover. Lesser amounts are possible at the coastline and in southern communities where the heavy rain and wintry mix hang on for the longest.

There will be minimal additional accumulation with the lighter showers on Friday.

OTHER IMPACTS

The snow's consistency will be heavy and wet, and that, combined with winds gusting over 35-45 mph, will lead to scattered power outages.

The highest wind gusts will be in some of the higher terrain and western sides of the mountains in northern NH and at the coastline, but they will also be strong at times elsewhere. Winds will be strongest from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon and should die down Thursday Night into Friday.

The storm is also causing concerns at the coastline. The high tide at Hampton Beach at 7:41 a.m. Thursday is the one to watch. Winds will be strong out of the east and northeast as the storm passes by offshore. Minor to moderate coastal flooding possible, along with minor beach erosion. Seas are forecast to be at 11.5 feet, which is well above normal.

LOOKING AHEAD

After the light showers move out Friday, conditions will gradually improve over the weekend.

So far, it looks quiet for Monday , when the total solar eclipse occurs in parts of northern New Hampshire. The rest of the state will see a partial eclipse. So, make sure to have a pair of eclipse glasses handy.

Getting To Manchester

Manchester is really well connected by air, train and bus.

Flying into Manchester

Manchester Airport is just south of the city and is connected by train and tram to the city centre by a 20-30 minute journey, making landing and getting into the city pretty quick and easy.

Plan your journey from Manchester Airport into the City with Transport for Greater Manchester .

Train into Manchester

Doing a day trip to Manchester from another city in the UK is a great idea. You can even do a day trip to Manchester from London if you book the 2-hour train. Manchester Picadilly is the main train station but there’s also Manchester Victoria.

Check The Train Line for trains to Manchester!

Want to spend a day in Manchester and another day near Manchester? Here are the best day trips from Manchester!

Bus to Manchester

Manchester is served by the National Express and Megabus which are affordable ways to travel to Manchester.

The journeys do take longer so if you are travelling from another city for just a day in Manchester, check how long the bus will be vs the train which will probably be quicker.

manchester Piccadilly Platforms, one day in Manchester

Getting Around Manchester

Once in Manchester City Centre, the city is very walkable however to help you get around the city quicker and save your feet, there is a tram and bus system.

The best way to look into the trams and buses around Manchester City Centre is on the Transport for Greater Manchester website.

The following tram stops are all in the city centre and great to start your exploring from:

  • St Peters Square
  • Piccadilly Gardens
  • Piccadilly Station
  • Market Street
  • Exchange Square

Manchester Library and St Peters Square, one day in Manchester

A Day in Manchester

Ok now let’s get into ways to spend a day in Manchester and how to visit Manchester in one day:

One Day Manchester Itinerary

Morning – Breakfast at one of the many nice cafes in the city centre

Manchester is not short of breakfast and brunch options ! The Northern Quarte r is full of independent cafes as is the trendy area of Ancoats , and there are plenty of places near the Library and Town Hall .

On the weekends, you’ll see Mancunians queuing for brunch so if you’re spending your 1 day in Manchester on a weekday, take advantage of the lack of queues.

I personally really like Ezra & Gil , Another Heart to Feed, Foundation Coffee House and Evelyn’s Cafe .

avocado toast brunch in manchester, one day in Manchester

Mid-Morning – A Museum or two

Manchester doesn’t have as many museums as London but there are a few to visit.

Manchester Museum is like a Natural History Museum which is the most popular I’d say followed by the Science Museum.

The Science & Industry Museum is one of the great things to do in Manchester with kids . It’s very interactive for children and educational for adults , especially regarding the cotton industry which is what Manchester grew on so if you are new to the UK or Manchester, this is a great place to learn about Manchester’s past.

inside Manchester Museum with Whale skeleton, one day in Manchester

If you’re into art, Manchester Art Gallery is a lovely building to visit and well located close to Manchester Library and St Peters Square.

For Harry Potter vibes in Manchester City Centre , pop into John Rylands Library , it’s a beautiful building inside and fee to enter! It’s one of the great Manchester Instagram spots !

In this area is also Chinatown so if you’re craving Bubble Tea in Manchester, you’ll find some here!

Outside Manchester Art Gallery, one day in Manchester

MY PERFECT PLAN: You could easily go for Breakfast at Ezra & Gil , head over to the Science Museum and walk back to Manchester Library. You’ll see St Peter’s Square and the beautiful hotel that is The Midland on route and go to Manchester Art Gallery afterwards.

Mid-Morning Alternative Option – Free Walking Tour

Last summer I did a free walking tour with Free Manchester Walking Tours and it was really great!

They meet at 11:00 in Sackville Gardens (rain or shine) so this will give you time to get into the city and over the next 3 hours you’ll walk around a lot of the city and learn too!

I really enjoyed learning about Manchesters History and visiting spots I’d never seen or heard of before and the guides are enthusiastic about Manchester.

You don’t need to book which is great as you can decide on the day and don’t have to commit and then cancel!

Sackville Gardens Spring Blossom, one day in Manchester

Mid-Morning Alternative Option – Manchester United or Manchester City Stadium Tour

If football is the only thing you can think about when you think of Manchester, you have to book onto a stadium tour at Old Trafford or a tour of the Etihad Stadium .

These tours do not run every day as they depend on the matches and other events but on days they do run, they offer time slots from 10:00 and they are a great way to spend one day in Manchester!

I recently did the Manchester United’s Stadium Tour with my stepsons and although we are not big football fans, we really enjoyed it. Here’s my full review!

Check availability and book the Old Trafford Stadium Tour here!

Check availability and book the Etihad Stadium Tour here!

Lunchtime – Find a market for lunch

There are endless places to eat in Manchester and again, one of the reasons I love Manchester so much is the diversity in food !

Be sure to read my post for the best halal food in Manchester if you are looking for a halal lunch!

Manchester City Centre has a few inside food markets which are a great way to see how cool and edgy the city is in places.

Plus, if you are spending a day in Manchester with friends, food markets are a great way for everyone eat different things but you can still sit together.

MY PERFECT PLAN: I recommend having lunch in Mackie Major or Society MCR .

Mackie Major Market, one day in Manchester

Afternoon – Explore different areas of the city

If there are 2 area’s of Manchester City Centre I recommend you visit, they are the Northern Quarter and Ancoats and this is where I suggest going after lunch.

shops and cafes in Northern Quarter, one day in Manchester,

Both areas are very edgy and hip. The Northern Quarter (often shortened to NQ) is full of independent cafes and shops with a focus on vintage shops .

Afflecks in the Northern Quarter is a bit of an institution . It’s like an inside market over multiple levels with lots of independent stores. The clothing and items are not my type of thing but the place has a good buzz about it so it’s fun to pop inside, and it’s definitely a good place for teenagers to visit in Manchester!

See if you can spot the famous ‘And on the sixth day God made MANchester sign’!

outside of Afflecks in Northern Quarter, one day in Manchester,

Ancoats is an up and coming trendy neighbourhood . It’s known for it’s food and drink scene but I also love the old red brick buildings in the area which once would have been factory mills. Here are the best things to do in Ancoats .

A afternoon coffee or drink here is definitely a good idea!

red brick building in Ancoats, one day in Manchester,

Get a look at Manchester with a guide, or book the hop-on hop-off bus if you’d rather not walk around the city yourself!

Afternoon Alternative – Shop in The Trafford Centre

Old Trafford and The Trafford Centre are 2 places most people think about when they think of Manchester.

The Trafford Centre is a great place to go shopping in Manchester , it doesn’t have the BEST shops imo, but it does have some good ones. It has a lot of nice places to eat in the food court , and the interior of The Trafford Centre is certainly something to be witnessed !

You can get to The Trafford Centre by bus or tram from the city centre if you do not have a car and if the weather is not good enough for wandering the city , or you want to see this famous Manchester institution, spending a few hours here is a great addition to your one day in Manchester.

There are lots of activities and attractions within The Trafford Centre and Trafford Park, I’ve detailed many of them here in this list of family attractions in Manchester , think Legoland, Sealife Centre, indoor Skiing & Snowboarding, indoor Skydiving, Rock Climbing and mini Dinosaur golf!

Legoland and Sea Life and located within The Trafford Centre and good activities to keep children happy during their one day in Manchester!

Inside The Trafford Centre Shopping Centre, one day in Manchester

MY PERFECT PLAN : After exploring the city in the morning and having lunch, get the bus or tram to The Trafford Centre for a few hours of shopping. Go to Archies in the food court and get burgers for dinner (another Manchester institution), or head back into the city for dinner.

Evening – Go to the Curry Mile for Dinner

As I’ve mentioned a few times in this guide to a day in Manchester, Manchester is a diverse city which can be seen in it’s food, and one of the best places to eat in Manchester is along Wilmslow Road , also known as the ‘Curry Mile’ .

This is a stretch of road just outside the city centre full of Arab and Asian restaurants varying in budget and what they offer.

If you’re craving some Indian, Pakistani, Turkish food, or you want to try a new cuisine like Afghan, Iranian, Yemeni or Syrian, head here!

Ellie eating Yemeni food on Wilmslow Road, one day in Manchester

Evening Alternative – Have a fancy Dinner in the city

Manchester City Centre is full of really nice restaurants too if you want a fancy dinner during your one day in Manchester.

Some restaurants which offer high quality food , a nice atmosphere and where you can dress up a bit are:

  • Australasia
  • Rump N Ribs Steakhouse
  • Don Giovanni

Ellie eating at Don Giovanni, one day in Manchester

Late Evening – Check out a band or theatre performance

Manchester has a great evening entertainment scene. Whether you want to head to the bars , see a band or watch a show , there’s always a lot of things to do in Manchester in the evening.

Here’s What’s On in Manchester right now , and what’s on at the Palace Theatre which is the biggest Theatre in Manchester with many world class West End shows!

Best Hotels in Manchester

Ending your day in Manchester, based on my staycations in the city, here are the hotels I love the best in Manchester:

  • Wilde Aparthotels – $$ ( Read my review here )
  • The Midland – $$$
  • Dakota – $$$
  • Kimpton Clocktower – $$$
  • Native Manchester – $$

Police try to use Taser on man they found smashing shop windows in Manchester

MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) - Businesses in Manchester reported that someone smashed their windows overnight.

Police said they arrested 37-year-old Daniel Ceasar for the incident.

Daniel Ceasar was arrested for smashing the windows of businesses along Main Street in...

The businesses were located along Main Street in the area of Cottage Street.

The damage appeared to be focused on storefronts. Channel 3 found two businesses with damaged windows. Police said eight properties reported damage.

According to police, they responded to the area around 12:25 a.m. on Thursday for a report of a possible burglary.

“The caller told dispatch they could hear glass breaking,” said Lt. Nick Reinert, Manchester police. “When officers arrived, they noticed several businesses were damaged consisting of broken glass windows and doors.”

Officers then said they spotted Ceasar actively smashing windows on Main Street with two metal rebar rods.

“Officers ordered Ceasar to drop the metal rods and get on the ground,” Reinert said. “Ceasar did not comply with the officer’s commands. Officers deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective.”

Police said Ceasar then approached a police cruiser and struck the passenger side window of the cruiser with the metal rod. So, they tackled him, and he was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported.

“At this point in the investigation, we are aware of and working with eight properties in total that were damaged,” Reinert said.

Ceasar was said to be in police custody and was presented in court on Thursday.

He was charged with first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace, second-degree threatening, carrying a dangerous weapon, and Interfering.

“We were a little shocked it’s like, first thing in the morning seeing all this,” said Renae Westry with the Full Gospel Interdenominational Church.

The church’s office windows were smashed.

“Luckily nobody got into the building and everything was secure and like I said the police were amazing at just communicating with us and making sure that we were settled and everything was okay,” Westry said.

Phone calls in the middle of the night are how several Manchester store owners found out their windows and doors had all been smashed.

“Windows smashed. Came rushing down here and literally all the windows were smashed,” said Claire Miller-Burty, Building Owner.

Miller-Burty owns the building that houses every damaged business.

“It’s intense. It’s scary. It’s very nonchalant. It’s walking by businesses busting out windows,” Miller-Burty said. “We have signs that say, ‘Smile you’re on camera.’”

Bob Sulick owns Mulberry Street.

“Hit all of our windows with an iron pipe and smashed every one of them,” Sulick said.

His restaurant was one of the targets, but he still thinks they came out luckier than most.

“We were lucky because our windows are double-pane. They broke the outside pane, the inside was intact so we didn’t get any rain or wind inside, so we were lucky,” said Sulick.

But, believe it or not, tenants say this isn’t the first run-in they’ve had with Ceasar.

“Second time. Happened last year. Same person, but last time it was done with a planter,” Miller-Burty said.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Manchester Police Department.

Deadly April storm batters Northeast, snarling travel and knocking out power to half a million

A powerful April storm is hitting the Northeast on Thursday, dumping rain and snow with howling tropical force winds, prompting major airport delays and whiteout road conditions, and knocking out power to over half a million customers.

The strong storm system has been crawling across the U.S. since the weekend — and has already led to several weather-related deaths.

In Pennsylvania, two people died in separate incidents in which a tree fell on the car they were in during Wednesday’s storms. An elderly man died in Delaware County, and an elderly woman , described as in her early 80s, was also killed in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Another death was reported in Armonk, New York, Wednesday evening after a tree fell onto a car, killing the operator, North Castle police said.

As of Thursday morning, the system is making its way out of the Northeast, with 5 million people under wind alerts across New England and 8 million under winter alerts.

The system will produce heavy, wet snow over north-central New England and northeast New York and pass through Maine on Thursday, the National Weather Service Prediction Center forecast. An additional 12 inches of snowfall is possible through Friday.

A woman exits a tornado damaged building on April 3, 2024 in Sunbright, Tenn.

The system will create “significant impacts from heavy snow and wind,” and perilous travel due to whiteout conditions, snow-covered roads, tree damage and power outages, the NWS said.

Disrupted travel, crashes and power outages

Air travel has already been affected, with over 1,200 delays and over 300 cancellations inside, into or out of the U.S. reported, according to Flight Aware data — all amid a week of busy spring break bookings.

The storm system has also wreaked havoc on roads.

In New Hampshire, state troopers responded to three tractor-trailer rollover crashes in less than seven hours by late Wednesday. State police urged locals “to avoid unnecessary travel.” Massachusetts State Police also responded to multiple crashes Wednesday evening, describing road conditions as “poor.”

Powerful winds have whipped through the region since Wednesday, downing power lines and trees.

Nationally, over 500,000 customers are without power — including over 235,000 in Maine, 53,000 in West Virginia and over 51,000 in New York as of 8:30 a.m., according to PowerOutage.us.

By 2:30 p.m. ET, more than 640,000 were without power with over 334,000 out in Maine and over 173,000 out in New Hampshire.

In New Hampshire as of early Thursday, more than 100,000 customers were without power, the state’s division of homeland security and emergency management said. The agency’s State Emergency Operations Center has been activated in response to the storm.

New York State Electric and Gas, which serves the upstate region, said Wednesday’s severe weather led to 180 downed wires and more than 30 broken poles.

“NYSEG pre-staged more than 2,100 additional line workers and tree personnel across its service areas in preparation for the storm and are currently shifting resources to support its hardest hit areas,” the company said.

Utility company National Grid said it was responding to stormy conditions in upstate New York by increasing staffing, extending overnight shifts, bringing in additional resources from other states and Canada, and pre-staging crews in areas anticipated to be “most severely impacted.”

In Brookfield, Connecticut, a mother and her three kids narrowly escaped injury Wednesday when stormy winds caused a tree to fall on their car, completely crushing it.

In Maine, where heavy snow is forecast, Gov. Janet Mills directed all state offices to be closed Thursday and urged locals to “take proper precautions and to prepare for possible power outages.”

Lightning strikes the Statue of Liberty in New York on Apri 3, 2024.

More wind, rain and snow

The storm has already drenched much of the Northeast, with a daily record of 1.75 inches recorded at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday, 1.55 inches in Central Park, 1.49 inches in Philadelphia, and 1.84 inches in Newark, New Jersey.

Even Lady Liberty was hit by rumbling thunderstorms, struck by a bolt of lightning Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. in a stunning moment captured by a photographer from Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

The system has also brought with it dangerously high winds, with a gust of 67 mph reported Wednesday in Nantucket, Massachusetts, 64 mph in Stamford, Connecticut, 59 mph in Manhattan and 54 mph in Boston.

Winds are forecast to stay strong through Thursday, with isolated wind gusts of 50-60 mph possible especially for coastal New England.

People with umbrellas during heavy rain in New York on April 3, 2024.

Alerts for minor to moderate coastal flooding also remain in effect through Thursday evening for 26 million from the Delmarva Peninsula to the Maine coast.

The system will slowly move off the Northeast coast by Saturday.

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

A major early spring storm arrives today and continues all day Thursday, and even lingers into Friday. This spring nor'easter will bring wet snow, mix, gusty winds, and coastal flooding. Power outages are a very real concern due to the heavy, wet nature to the snow and strong wind gusts.

Initial snow, mix and rain is expected to move in sometime early this afternoon. The Wednesday evening commute home should be OK, due to initial warmer surface temperatures limiting snow accumulation. But later tonight and during the overnight hours as the temperatures get colder and the snow intensity ramps up, we'll see travel conditions deteriorate fast. Highest travel impacts will likely be later Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Winds will be strongest tonight into Thursday morning, too. Gusts to 40-50 mph are possible in the White Mountains and at the coast.

There is also a coastal flood watch for the Thursday morning high tide at 7:41AM. Minor to moderate flooding is likely at that time.

We'll have some lingering lighter showers Friday and gradual improvement over the weekend.

Snowstorm slams Northeast, Great Lakes with mass power outages and travel mayhem

A deadly storm that's left a trail of wreckage across a vast swath of the U.S. slammed the Northeast and Great Lakes regions with heavy snow, rain and wind on Thursday, knocking out power , closing schools and disrupting travel in major cities.

Parts of the Northeast received 1 to 2 feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service . By Thursday evening, the weather service reported over 17 inches of snow in Grey, Maine.

The combination of pummeling snow and gusty winds led to whiteout conditions and snow-covered roads in some areas. Many schools and government offices across the region were closed.

"Please stay off the roads today if you can," said Maine Gov. Janet Mills in a post on X . "If you must drive, take it slowly, and always give plenty of room to first responders, plow trucks, and utility crews."

While the heaviest snow was expected to subside by Thursday night, the weather service said periods of snow will continue through Friday. Occasional wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph across New England may also cause reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday.

The weather service issued flood advisories across parts of Illinois, east through Virginia and up to Rhode Island, including Washington, D.C., and New York City. Over 3 inches of rain had fallen in parts of New Jersey as of Thursday morning. The same storm impacted the Great Lakes, and several inches of snow was reported in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Meanwhile, parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico were under weather advisories warning of strong winds, coastal rain and snow in areas of high elevation. A front moving east over the northern High Plains, Great Basin and Southern California regions will linger over the Sierra Nevada Mountains through Saturday, while snow is anticipated to lash the Rockies into the weekend.

Dozens of accidents reported in Maine amid heavy snow

Since Wednesday night, there have been about 46 crashes and slide-offs on the Interstate and Turnpike, according to Maine State Police. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid travel due to the snowfall intensity and deteriorated road conditions.

The National Weather Service in Grey, Maine, recorded heavy snowfall throughout Thursday. The heavy snow band that moved through the region reduced visibility to less than a quarter of a mile, according to the weather service.

"There are trees down all over the place and its difficult to travel on any side road," the weather service in Grey, Maine, said on X, formerly Twitter.

Hundreds of thousands without power; flights canceled

More than 530,000 homes and businesses were without power across the Northeast, especially in Maine , where over 285,000 utility customers were in the dark Thursday night, according to a database maintained by USA TODAY . The Great Lakes region was not spared: Michigan and Wisconsin reported nearly 36,700 outages.

Airports in Boston, New York and New Jersey reported disruptions; there were about 100 cancellations and 150 delays on Thursday afternoon, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website .

Road closures because of debris, snow and floods were reported across the Northeast on Thursday.

Thunderstorms delay Baltimore bridge recovery operations

Bad weather and swirling currents are limiting recovery efforts in Baltimore harbor where the commercial ship Dali crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, toppling a huge portion of the span and killing six construction workers.

The current of one knot, underwater visibility of 2 feet and the tangled mass of steel and concrete from the bridge have complicated the work of divers, according to a senior U.S. official briefed on the multi-agency recover effort.

Thunderstorms in the area have delayed operations until Friday, the official said. One container that had been knocked off the Dali has been located, and crews plan to refloat it by Friday.

Damage assessments, cleanup underway in parts of central, eastern US

The large storm system, which has walloped the nation with severe weather conditions since the weekend, spun up tornadoes in Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia this week, damaging businesses and leveling homes. In areas as far south as Florida, strong winds toppled utility poles and snapped trees. Throughout the Midwest, floodwaters trapped cars in roadways and left people stranded for hours.

"It's devastating," said Sunbright Mayor Karen Melton on Wednesday after a  tornado ripped through the small Tennessee city, about an hour northwest of Knoxville. Though there were no deaths of injuries, the damage was immense. "We had a young mother and father holding their babies, an infant and a 4-year-old (when) the tornado ripped the roof of their apartment. ... It was just horrific and sad. But they were safe, she had some scratches, but the babies were safe. That was just a major blessing."

In northern West Virginia, a mudslide washed out over 200 tombstones at a cemetery in Wheeling, a small city at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, CBS42 reported. The cemetery, which was closed Thursday, is home to thousands of graves, some of which date back to the Civil War.

In Indiana, the storm destroyed homes throughout the Evansville area, including the city's wartime museum, which had to cancel all events and close because it had "heavily sustained damage." Photos posted on the museum's  Facebook page show  caved-in ceiling tiles and exposed insulation.

Authorities in Georgia continued the cleanup effort following a pair of tornadoes that struck the Atlanta metro area and Crisp County, near the center of the state, late Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. In Crisp County, where the tornado had maximum winds of up to 100 mph, about 36 homes were either damaged or completely destroyed.

"This is a dangerous situation: trees still being cut in the area, power lines still down, a lot of equipment moving back and forth," Sheriff Billy Hancock said in a video posted to Facebook on Thursday. "There's still plenty of work to be done."

Officials tie several deaths to powerful storm

At least four people died in Kentucky, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania because of the storm this week.

On Wednesday, two people – a 70-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman – died when their cars were crushed by fallen trees, multiple outlets reported. A young man in Campbell County, Kentucky, died in a traffic accident during Tuesday’s storms,  Gov. Andy Beshear said  at a news conference Wednesday.

On Monday, a 46-year-old unhoused woman in Tulsa, Oklahoma, died after seeking shelter in a storm drain   KJRH-TV reported .

Major California highway closed again after partial collapse

A major highway in Southern California that collapsed over the weekend when thunderstorms drenched the region has been closed again as more severe weather is forecast for the region.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office in Salinas announced an evacuation order Wednesday morning for areas of Big Sur ahead of showers and thunderstorms that began Thursday and are anticipated to continue Friday. Officials said residents could evacuate on Highway 1 to the north before "a full road closure" where the collapse occurred last Saturday.

The road "slip out" happened during heavy rainfall that was fueled by the large weather system making its way across the country, which also brought damaging hail to the Midwest.

Sydney weather: intense rain threatens major flooding in NSW as SES issues warnings for drivers

Storm claims a life in Queensland after body of man found by his ute near Logan, while rivers in south of state subject to flood warnings

Major flooding could threaten parts of Sydney and drivers have been warned to avoid non-essential travel as a deadly storm brings intense rainfall along the eastern seaboard.

An inland low and coastal trough joining forces over New South Wales was forecast to bring heavy localised falls to much of the state on Friday.

Sydney has faced its highest daily rainfall in two years, recording 111mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Friday. The city is on track to surpass its average total rainfall for April before the weekend.

“We’ll see the heaviest rain falling overnight, probably from midnight to around 7am to 8am,” Weatherzone meteorologist Angus Konta said.

Authorities warned 24-hour rainfall totals could top 200mm in Sydney and the south coast, with as much as 300mm dumped on the Illawarra escarpment overlooking Wollongong.

Major flooding was possible along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River bounding Sydney from late Friday, with Penrith likely to cop as much rain in a day as one-and-a-half times the April average.

Transport for NSW took the rare step of warning drivers statewide to avoid non-essential travel, while the NSW State Emergency Service warned coastal communities from Sydney to Goulburn to stay indoors.

The SES has already conducted seven flood rescues overnight, six related to people in vehicles, and has responded to more than 550 incidents across the state during the past 24 hours.

The majority of calls have related to leaking roofs, sky lights and gutters, but chief superintendent Dallas Burnes said the service was preparing for flash flooding and riverine rises.

Storms have led to 92 flights being cancelled or delayed at Sydney Airport, mostly across the domestic network, and the city’s train network is experiencing widespread delays.

Nine schools across NSW have shut down amid the severe weather, six of which are in the state’s north-east. The shutdowns are affecting seven public schools and two independent schools.

Almost every river in eastern NSW and numerous rivers in southern Queensland are subject to a flood watches or warnings, as heavy rain and possible flash flooding hit both states.

“What we’ve got is a trough along the NSW coast and it’s extending right up into Queensland, so it’s dragging quite a bit of subtropical moisture down,” Konta said.

The trough is deepening and interacting with an upper-level low over NSW, which is further boosting the moisture level in the atmosphere, he said.

Storms have already claimed a life in Queensland after the body of a man was found by his ute near Logan, while a 30-minute wave of rain in northern NSW flooded enclosures at a wildlife sanctuary on Thursday.

“Due to the amount of water dumped into the park, we have relocated our animals and the hospital [has been] relocated to a higher position,” the Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary said.

after newsletter promotion

With the catastrophic 2022 Northern Rivers floods fresh in minds, the SES said the silver lining for Friday’s system was that it was moving.

“If we go back to those northern river floods, it didn’t move as forecast,” the NSW SES commissioner, Carlene York, said.

“It stayed there, it kept dumping the rain and that’s obviously had the big impact.”

Volunteers had proactively deployed vehicles and vessels into danger areas.

Residents in such areas should clear gutters and tie down loose items ahead of time, SES metro zone commander Allison Flaxman said.

Severe weather is expected to gradually shift overnight to centre on NSW’s south coast, before easing throughout Saturday as the trough moves east to the Tasman Sea.

But persistent showers over the weekend will likely push Australia’s largest urban water supply dam to overflow on Monday.

Warragamba Dam, on Sydney’s south-western fringe, sat at 96% capacity as Friday’s storm approached.

“We require about 90mm of rain to fill Warragamba Dam … we’re expecting 100mm to 150mm,” Water NSW’s chief executive, Andrew George, told AAP.

“The spill will occur likely when the rainfall event has moved on, so it is very important that the community remain vigilant,” he said.
