One Day Treks In Manali

one day trek near manali

Manali, one of Himachal Pradesh's most well-known hill resorts, provides some of the state's most breathtaking vistas of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar mountains, typically blanketed in snow throughout the year. Manali has become a popular destination for young people seeking extended work stays.

Old Manali is one of their favourite neighbourhoods because it has cosy cafés, good Wi-Fi, little eateries, and convenience stores. Manali is an excellent starting point for exploring this side of the Himalayas because there are multiple trekking opportunities nearby.

With the Atal Tunnel, travellers may travel from Spiti to Sissu in a matter of hours, thus increasing its accessibility. The snowiest months are January and February, followed by December and March.. If you're very fortunate, snow may still be present in April.

1. Jogini Waterfall Trek

one day trek near manali

The Jogini Waterfall Trek is the best day hike in Manali and one of the top attractions. The Jogini Waterfall Trek begins in the tranquil village of Vashisht, and it takes around three kilometres to reach the waterfall. A stroll through the forest will give you views of Rohtang and the Beas River on your left. This trek is the finest thing to do in Manali if you have a limited amount of time, and it is also one of the most picturesque locations in Manali.

2. Lamadugh Trekking

one day trek near manali

Hardcore mountaineers and trekkers have long made Manali their base of operations. After all, mountains like Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Ladakh, and Friendship Peak simply tower over the town, beckoning to be scaled. Here, mountaineering schools have formed themselves to serve this expanding community of hikers and climbers. The Patalsu peak is very close to these trekking trips. It is a relatively short hike in comparison. But what makes this summit trip unique is its accessibility to beginners. A summit ascent is an experience that stays with you for a very long time. The easy-moderate Patalsu walk provides the same unique sense as a peak ascent.

 3. Bijli Mahadev Trekking

one day trek near manali

Hardcore mountaineers and trekkers have long made Manali their base of operations. The Bijli Mahadev Mandir, a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, is when the Bijli Mahadev Trek gets its name. The location, at the height of 2452 metres, is 24 kilometres east of Kullu in the Himachal Pradesh district. Even though the trekking path includes a strenuous climb for the first kilometre, it subsequently eases into a more gradual and comfortable ascent for beginners, making it the trip that the less intensive traveller chooses among all the trekking places in India. Despite spending a lot of time in Himachal Pradesh.

4. Anjani mahadev Trekking

one day trek near manali

The Anjani Mahadev Temple may be found at Solang hamlet, above Burma's ski slopes. Only a mule and horse-drawn trip will get you to the temple. The temple is well-known for its 20-foot-high ice sheet, which Baba Prakash Puri found 15 years ago. Anjani, Lord Hanuman's mother, is thought to have utilised this location for prayer and meditation; as a result, the temple bears her name.

You may get to the Mahadev temple by taking a short stroll through the valley, rivers, stones, and innumerable steps. The Shivling-Fatru-Solang, regarded as one of the most beautiful paths in both the summer and the winter, is overcome by this route, saving time. Anjani Mahadev Trail, which overlooks the picturesque Solang Valley, is still one of the most majestic locations with a waterfall that freezes in the winter and creates a 30 m tall natural Shiva lingam.

5. Solang Valley Waterfall

one day trek near manali

This waterfall in the middle of the hills has a beautiful, picturesque environment, making it a must-see location in Manali. The stream that subsequently combines with Beas is what creates this waterfall. Tourists like to enter the little pool at the bottom of the structure. However, it is advised against swimming in the collection during the rainy season due to the exponentially quick water flow that could cause injury.

This trail leads past quaint towns and picturesque valleys, and the area is so serene that it makes one desire to stay put forever rather than leave this Xanadu. At the base of the Jogini Mata fall is a modest temple with religious importance. A sight to behold, this 150-foot-tall waterfall is made even more impressive by the village's picturesque valleys.

How to Reach Manali:

There isn't an airport in Manali; the closest one is in Kullu, 50 kilometres away, at Bhuntar. There are flights between Kullu and Delhi. However, they are erratic and quite expensive. You’ll see a small shed type, structure from where you should spot a trail going upwards. Continue the uphill and ask for directions to the locals. It can be confusing. But you’ll find people on the trail.

The village is a great vantage point to observe the high mountains of Fojal (Dhauladhar ranges) and pretty hamlets of Upper Kullu with River Beas or Vipasha meandering across the valley.

Bijli Mahadev is basically beautiful meadow and residing place Lord Shiva. Along with the religious importance the vistas you get to witness from here are insanely pretty.

Located in Kharal valley of Kullu, Chansari is the starting point of the hike. Even though the road goes further beyond Chansari, the bus leaves you at Chansari. You can either take steep shortcuts or else follow the longer route in the form of road.

From Chansari, it will take around 1.5-2 hours to reach Bijli Mahadev at a relaxed pace. The route is very well- frequented and you will find travelers all the time. The trail is also very well-marked.

If you are looking to experience the true beauty of Kullu in an authentic way, Here is a non-cliche itinerary to the beautiful Kullu valley.

Shaleen Hike – A Pristine Village Near Touristy Manali That Will Leave You Awestruck

If you are looking for a easy short hike near Manali with pretty vistas, the hike to the village of Shaleen will be a wonderful option.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy clamour of Manali, the village of Shaleen feels like a breath of fresh air. Although a road now goes all the way to Shaleen but I would suggest you to hike to Shaleen.

The trail to Shaleen, climbs uphill from the Green Tax Barrier or locally known as Aloo ground just a few km before Manali main town. The trail is well-marked in the form of cemented stairs steeply climbing uphill.

Absolute beginners might struggle a bit, but again the distance is short and you should eventually make it to the village. The distance from Aloo ground should be around 3-4 km.

There is a beautiful temple dedicated to Shandalya Rishi at Shaleen amidst towering Deodhars. And the landscapes that you get to witness from Shaleen itself are quite beautiful to be honest.

The village of Shaleen is quite beautiful and a lot of houses in Shaleen are still traditional houses despite of its closeness to Manali and road connectivity.

By the way, here is a comprehensive list of 27 beautiful unexplored places near Kullu Manali like Shaleen.

Kufri – Muhling Hike

How does a hike to Lush Green Meadows of Upper Kullu passing through beautiful rusitc village amidst dreamy Deodhar trail with insane view of snow-capped peaks sound to you ? Incredible right ?

This is what Shajuni-Kufri-Miuhling near Raison has to offer. Although complete beginners might struggle a bit, but owing to the gradual-ascent this hike is perfect for beginners looking to take things up a notch.

The hike starts from the village of Shajuni located right above Raison. The village itself is a beautiful rustic village of Upper Kullu. The trail from Shajuni to Kufri is kind gradual ascent.

Kufri is basically the first meadow you’ll encounter while on the way to Muhling. From Kufri itself you get a glimpse of snow-covered peaks. Kufri is basically a clearing where villagers leave their cattle to graze.

The end point Muhling is said to have even grander views is what I have heard. I personally have hiked only until Kufri and I was quite impressed to say the least. So you can only imagine the prisitne beauty of Kullu valley from Muhling.

The total hike is around 15-16 km. A perfect for fit beginners wanting to unravelling the lesser-frequented trails in Upper Kullu valley.

Here is a detailed guide on how to explore Himachal using only public transport like I do almost exclusively.

The beautiful Kufri meadows on a not so clear Autumn day. The trail further climbs up to Mahling, Chorgani before finally leading to Chaplang Tibba or Fugni Top, the Divide between Kalichang and Lug valley.

Chikka Hike – On The Hamta Pass Trail

Hike to Chika in Hamta valley is one of the easy treks near Manali. Hamta valley is one of the popular destinations around Manali and just around 10-15 km from the Prini.

The trail to Chikka is almost a level walk with a few ascents and descents perfect for beginners. The initial part of the trail takes of through a beautiful pine forest to a clearing from the last point at Allain barage hydro project.

After crossing the clearing you again enter dreamy pine forests only to find yourself marveling at the rugged beauty of Hamta from yet another meadow or clearing. There is also a small Dhaba at this clearing.

Now a brief descent will lead you to a wooden bridge where in you’ll encounter the most beautiful landscape on the trail. Now you can end the hike herself itself if you are too tired. The place is called Jobra or Jobri, I am not very sure.

Or continue to Chikka which should take you around 45 minutes more. The views remain almost the same as you witness at the wooden bridge at Chikka. But everything now seems more up close.

The hike to Chikka is around 4 km from the end of road at Allain Barage hydro project. The hike can be easily completed in under 2 hours or even less for those who walk fast.

Kalang-Tiun Hike – Pristine Vistas From This Village Of Lug Valley Will Blow Your Mind

Hike Tiun in Lug valley will a perfect one for you, if you like to explore the lesser-frequented valleys of Kullu. Lug valley is one of the least frequented valleys in Kullu, but is quite beautiful to say the least.

Tiun is one such Upper village of the valley which is yet to be connected by road. The sea of trade-mark Kath-Kuni styled houses with pretty vistas all-around will surely leave you spellbound.

The hike starts from the village of Kalang in Lug valley. Local buses and shared taxi’s ply regularly from Dhalpur in Kullu town.

The pristine villages of Lug valley and Sarwari Nullah will be your constant companions on the dirt track. When you reach the village of Kadingcha, the road gets narrower and becomes kind of trail.

Continue walking on the trail and you’ll find a bridge across the Sarwari Nullah from where a painful uphill footslog for an hour will transport you to one of the most beautiful villages in Kullu and Lug valley.

Of course, not without getting awestruck by the insanely pretty vistas of the mysterious lug valley. Tiun is home to Fugni Devi, a local deity who is revered across Lug valley and even the Chota Bhangal in Kangra.

The total hike from Kalang to Tiun and back is around 15-16 km. Most of it is a level-walk on the dirt track and only a last couple of km is a non-stop uphill ascent to the village of Tiun. It took me around 2.5 hours to reach Tiun from Gramang.

Tiun, absolutely pretty locale of the lesser-frequented lug valley.

Kasol – Grahan Hike – One Of Most Beautiful Villages In Kullu District

Grahan is one of the most popular hikes near Kullu Manali. And it becomes quite obvious why it is such a popular hike near Kullu Manali once you see the absolutely splendid vistas of the villages itself.

Grahan rose to popularity a few years back when a few travelers and bloggers reached this insanely picturesque village in order to escape the touristy clamour of Kasol.

At that point in time, reaching Grahan was not so easy. The trails were confusing and much of the road was under construction.

All you have to do nowadays is get into a shared cab from Kasol or walk on the road some 6-7 km alongside the alluring Grahan Nullah amidst some insanely pretty forests of Deodhar.

Once you reach the Grahan parking a steep hike for 1-1.5 km will take you to probably one of the most beautiful villages in Kullu district.

The towering pines, huge Kath-Kuni styled houses, insanely pretty temples, and not to mention the lofty snow-covered peaks will surely leave you awestruck. It took me around 2.5 hours to reach the village of Grahan on foot right from Kasol.

Kasol is around 38 km from Kullu.

Patalsu Peak One Day Trek | Manali

Photo of The Himalayan Boy

The Journey should be happy, not perfect

Photo of Patalsu Peak One Day Trek | Manali by The Himalayan Boy

The Patalsu Peak is situated in Solang Valley at the altitude of 4220 m. One can reach here with the trek of 9 Km from Solang Village which is 14 Km from Manali. Patalsu Peak offers the spectacular 360 view of all the highest and notable peaks of Manali. It can be accomplished within a day if starts early in the morning from solang. It is easy but entirely very steep trek and do take precautions with weather and altitude sickness.

We were three friends decided to do Patalsu Peak Trek at the Height of 4220 m in Manali within a weekend. Hence, on Friday, we took a overnight bus from Delhi and reached in Manali early in the morning. Although we wanted to reach Manali around 5 am but somehow we got late and reached there at around 7.30 am and after getting fresh and having some good breakfast at Solang Valley (14Km away from Manali), started our 9 Km trek for Patalsu Peak at 9.30am. It was a complete steep trek and highly daunting as we were also doing it on a same day after reaching Manali without getting adjusted with mountains but we had a shortage of time.

Photo of Patalsu Peak One Day Trek | Manali by The Himalayan Boy

We were hopeful for reaching the Peak but it was weather which was a cause of concern for all of us as Google was showing a narrow window of clear weather till afternoon after that it was showing storm in that area. We also witnessed little drizzle in the half of the distance and we got our rain coats out but it got stopped. Thankfully we did not gave up and kept moving to the peak. As we were moving upwards it was getting tough due altitude but views were also getting more awesome. We knew that we started little late as it took around 10 hrs to do up and down in Patalsu Peak Trek but we were already near 4 pm and weather again started worsening.

Hence we had to make the hard choice to turned back from there although we were right below and close to the peak but it is still at least 1 hr away which could have been risky for all of us. As we started moving towards solang village the clouds were getting dark and storm was approaching to us. But luckily we managed to reach solang valley on time and after sitting at dhaba it started heavily rain. We wanted to reach to Manali that evening but due to rain we couldn't able to reach and had to take shelter in Solang Valley.

Conclusion -

1. Never miss this fabulous trek near Manali

2. No need to have guide for regular trekkers

3. 10 Hrs up and down trek, Start little early 5 am from Solang Village

4. Take precaution with weather and adjust yourself with mountains first to avoid AMS

With a multitude of trekking locales available, you can pick the one depending upon your choice of location and trek level. These trekking destinations offer an overwhelming experience-with every walk with nature you will receive more than you seek!

There are some common elements to these treks in Manali as you traverse through the beautifully diverse Himalayan terrain, small idyllic villages and are treated to the most exotic flora and fauna of Himachal Pradesh. However, each of these treks is steeped in mythology/folklore with certain highlights that are exclusive to that trek alone.

MYTHOLOGY SURROUNDING MANALI, INDIA)

Manali was named after Manu, a Santan lawgiver. Manali is said to be a derivation of Manu-Alaya, which means Manu's residence. Manu is said to have halted at Manali to rebuild human life after a great flood swamped the earth, according to Hindu mythology. Manali is a beautiful city tucked away in the Kullu Valley, which is known as the "Valley of the Gods." A historic temple attributed to the guru Manu may be seen in the town's native village.

Let's take a quick look at the 10 most popular destinations for trekking in Manali.

1. beas kund trek.

beas kund trek manali

An ideal 3-day weekend trek in Manali, with a total distance of 16 kms takes you to the source of the effervescent Beas river and touches an altitude of 12,772 feet. Walking towards the origin of the Beas river while experiencing the beauty of the region in its glorious best is a perfect gift for an adventurous soul.

The trek can be extended to 5 to 6 days if one wishes to explore further.

Also known as Vyasa Kund trek , the base point of the trek is the Solang valley , located at a distance of 13 kms from Manali. Dotted with vast grasslands, small rivulets, coniferous forests, and scenic campsites, Beas Kund trek treats you to the panoramic views of Deo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba, Dhundhi, Indrasen Peak and Pir Panjal range. The easy to moderate trekking trail of the trek makes it a big hit among amateurs as well as the professionals.

The best part of the trek is the Beas Kund lake located at the summit of the trek. According to the legend, sage Vyas meditated on the banks of this lake and wrote the epic Mahabharata.

The best months to undertake the Beas Kund Trek are Mid-May to Mid- October.

2. Bhrigu Lake Trek

bhrigu lake manali

Bhrigu Lake perched at an altitude of 14,100 feet is the star attraction of the trek. The lake remains frozen for most of the year and is rooted deep in mythology. It is believed that Sage Bhrigu meditated on the banks of the holy lake. It is also said that many Rishis and Devtas took their bath in the sacred lake.

3. Hampta Pass Trek

hampta pass trek

Hampta Pass is the most dramatic crossover trek in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. With a trekking distance of 35 km, this 5-day trekking extravaganza takes you to an ambitious altitude of 14,039 feet.

The easy to moderate trek captivates you with the most contrasting landscapes that range from vertical rock-walls to expansive grasslands, effervescent streams, silver waterfalls to hanging glaciers to the picturesque campsites and the barren and cold deserts of Lahaul and Spiti. The highlights of the trek are the contrasting sweeps of topography and the crossover trek from the glossy grasslands of Kulu Valley to the beautifully naked Chandra Valley in Lahaul Spiti.

The divinely beautiful Chandra Taal lake is a cherry on the cake of this most sought-after trek from the Manali region. Hindu mythology says that the trek route was traversed by Pandavas on their quest for heaven.

Mid-June to mid-October is the best time to do this trek .

4. Pin Parvati Trek

pin parvati pass trek

If you are looking for 11 days of sheer exhilaration, then Pin Parvati trek is your true calling! The imposing altitude of 17,457 feet of Pin Parvati Pass leaves less for imagination.

Reaching the apex point of the trek is the most exhilarating part of this expedition- the pass links the Parvati valley of Kulu to Pin Valley of Spiti. The mesmerizing views of Pin Valley, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kinner Kailash, Bara Shrigiri, Parbati Goat Head peak, Fluted peak, Kulu Makalu floor you with their exuberance.

The 110 km difficult level trek is peppered with a shifting panorama of lush prairie grasslands on one end and a cold barren desert of Spiti region on the other end of the spectrum. Colossal pastures, Buddhist hamlets, freezing glaciers, Hot Springs of Parvati Kund and an assortment of vivid culture-the challenging Pin Parvati trek is certainly not for the feeble-hearted.

According to legends, Lord Shiva was known to have meditated here for years, after which Parvati became delighted and began to flow.

Uncertain rainfall and completely frozen snow mountain make this trek a very tricky one.

June, July and September makes for the best season for undertaking this trek.

5. Chanderkhani Trek

chanderkhani trek

A short yet beautiful trek of 3 days which traverses a distance of 19 kms, Chanderkhani Pass trek brings you to an altitude of 12,000 feet. Nestled amidst the best of Himalayan peaks, the trekking trail journeys along the mammoth Barabangal, Pir Panjal and Parvati Ranges and offers the most splendid view of the Deo Tibba and Hanuman Tibba peaks.

Like most of the treks of the Himalayan region, this trek is deeply influenced by mythology too. It is believed that the local deity of Malana, known by the name Jamlu carried a basket full of Gods and opened it near the pass. A strong wind blew them to the nearby peaks and they settled on these peaks under the strong gush of wind. The peaks get their names after the important Hindu deities who settled there.

The quaint mountain villages of Naggar and Rumsu and Chandrakhani Pass are the star attractions of this trek which remains covered in snow till the end of May.

This moderate level trek is ideal for beginners and best done from mid-May to September, barring July and August.

6. Bara Bhangal Trek

bara bhangal trek

This 11-day, 80 kms, challenging trek that takes you to an elevation of 16,000 feet is certainly not for the beginners. It is touted as one of the toughest treks in Himachal as you explore the rugged backcountry in the most isolated routes.

One journey through expansive pastures, meticulous river crossings, beautiful glacial lakes, stubborn trails, dangerous moraines, and Kalihani and Thamsar Pass amidst the mesmerizing views of Deo Tibba, Mount Indrasen, Hanuman Tibba and the peaks of Bara Shigri glacier.

The lengthy duration and tricky trails improve your trekking experience and take you to the next level.

The village inhabitants of Bara Bhangal themselves believe that they are the descendants of Alexander the Great. Knowing about their mysterious ancestry is certainly one of the high points of this trek.

From the summit the glorified views of the Himalayan mammoths, stretching far beyond the horizon, are the most rewarding package of the trek.

The best time to do the trek is during the months of May to September.

7. Deo Tibba Basecamp Trek

deo tibba basecamp trek

Chota Chandratal , the emerald blue water lake at the foot of Deo Tibba is the star attraction of the trek. You also move along the Bhanara cave which is supposed to be the abode of Pandavas in Mahabharata.

TDescribed as one of the most scenic treks in the Himalayan region, the trek gets its name from Deo Tibba or the “Hill of Gods”. It is believed that the dome-shaped Deo Tibba is the heavenly throne of Lord Indra.

May to October are the best months to undertake this trek.

8. Prashar Lake Trek

parshar lake trek

Easy to moderate level trek of Prashar Lake covers a distance of 16 km in 2 days to bring you to the altitude of 8,956 feet. This untouched beauty of Himachal Pradesh journeys through thick forests and snow-laden mountains to bring you face to face to the hidden Himalayan gem.

The absolutely stunning Prashar Lake aka Parashar Lake encompassed by the colossal Dhauladhar range is the focal point of the trek. The 3-story pagoda-shaped temple dedicated to Sage Parashar on the banks of the lake is the second main attraction of Prashar Lake trek.

The best months are February, April, May, and September to do the Prashar Lake trek. The trek can even be done in the winter months of December to February if you enjoy the snow.

9. Sar Pass Trek

sar pass trek

This moderate to difficult trek spans over six days and covers a distance of 48 km to reach the staggering altitude of 13,780 feet. It offers an ideal ground for both amateurs and experienced trekkers even though it can get a bit strenuous for beginners. Sar Pass Trek is a wholesome package that offers myriad meadows, glossy forests, meandering forest trails passing through pretty villages, steep climbs, glacial lakes, bubbling mountain rivers, silver waterfalls, Parvati valley, a skyline of snow-capped mountains, glaciers and an amazing slide-almost everything you can dream of as a trekker.

The highlight of the trek is the Sar Lake , the small frozen lake that the trekkers are treated to while journeying through the trek.

The most exclusive part of Sar Pass trek is the exhilarating descent that cannot be traversed by trekking, given its steep incline. The slope from the pass is the most fun part as you slide down almost 1 km to reach the gentler slope of the valley.

The best time to do the trek is from May to October.

10. Kheerganga Trek

kheerganga trek kasol

At an elevation of 13,000 feet, Kheerganga is nestled at the extreme end of Parvati Valley. It is the last inhabited village on the trekking route from Pin Valley via Pin-Parvati Pass. This 2-day trek with a short trekking distance of 12 kms is an easy level trek. The mild trekking route makes it an ideal destination for almost everyone.

The trekking route is interspersed with beautiful waterfalls, apple orchards, lush expanses of greenery, Hot water springs, Shiva Temple and offers a perfect journey to discover the beautiful Parvati Valley and its many secrets. The trek route slowly unveils the depth of the magical terrain.

Kheerganga is embedded deep in mythology. It is an important destination for Hindus as well as Sikhs. It is widely believed that Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Parvati meditated at Kheerganga. Goddess Parvati would cook Kheer (rice pudding) in the hot water springs of the region, hence the name Kheerganga.

According to another legend Guru Nanakji while visiting his disciple in this region removed a giant stone and this is where the Hot Springs appeared.

These springs are undoubtedly the most popular part of the Kasol Kheerganga trek . The most amazing highlight of this trek is the rare experience as you take a dip in the hot water springs encompassed by the frosty snow-covered surroundings.

May to June and September to October are the best time to undertake the Kheerganga trek.

Top 5 Stunning Treks from Manali

By Latika Payak

Today, I want to start by sharing some great inside news — we’re about to inaugurate our new Indiahikes campus in Manali! This is a lovely place inside apple orchards where trekkers can come for their stay, briefings, collect their rentals, and offload their extra luggage.

Arjun Majumdar, founder-CEO of Indiahikes, shares an insight about why the Manali Campus is so significant.

“Manali is excessively commercialised. For a long time, the Indiahikes experience that we were so known for was being compromised. Also, our staff was finding it depressing to have prolonged stays in hotel rooms.

“We now have our most beautiful campus, set in the middle of an apple orchard and bordering the jungle. We can literally start trekking out of our tents!”

“It has been late, but I believe it is going to be our most beautiful campus ever,” he says.

But this blog is not about our campus. I want to talk about four stunning treks that you can do out of Manali.

I’ll start with the most underrated gem.

1. Manali Kaisdhar Trek

Difficulty : Easy | Duration : 4 days | Highest altitude : 8,300 ft

one day trek near manali

At Indiahikes, we want everyone to trek because trekking transforms lives. However, for everyone to trek we need treks that can be done by everyone. On the Manali Kaisdhar trek, the trails are short and flat. There are hardly any tricky sections to navigate. And the best part is that it requires no preparation and can be done by anyone.

The rewards you get out of the Manali Kaisdhar trek are much greater than the effort you put in. In just four days, you get a chance to immerse yourself in nature. You walk in the deep woods dominated by dense coniferous trees, come across a waterfall, walk to the ridge: the highest point of the trek, and get a glimpse of the culture of remote Himalayan villages. If that’s not enough, you are treated to stunning views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges.

2. Chandrakhani Pass trek

one day trek near manali

This is our greenest trek. The greenery changes all the time, making it a kaleidoscope of green that we rarely come across. Photo by Jothiranjan.

Difficulty : Moderate  (Level 2) | Duration : 5 days | Highest altitude : 12,185 ft

Chandrakhani Pass is not a new trek in Indian trekking circles. Along with the ancient stories of Naggar (where the trek starts) and the village with strange customs, Malana (where the trek ends), this route is well known. However, this trek is not trekked on much during the months of July and August, making it totally secluded.

While the other treks are crowded, the Chandrakhani Pass is a very secluded trek this season. It is easy on the legs as well. For those starting out on Himalayan trekking, this trek is an ideal one to start with.

The trek is also known for the beauty of its forests on either side. The forests are cool, dark, and offer a lot of variety. At times, you are under deodar trees; at others, you have maples over you, then oaks.

Once outside the tree line, you have a clear sky, and views of both the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges dominate the horizon.

Finally, the ridge walk to the summit is rare. It’s almost like walking on a cornice to the summit (in this case, the pass). The adventurous thrill of getting to the pass is high.

3. Beas Kund

one day trek near manali

Difficulty : Moderate  (Level 1) | Duration : 4 days | Highest Altitude :  12,772 ft

Beas Kund has become a favourite among those who have done it.

Among all our treks in Himachal Pradesh, it struck us how strongly our trek leaders were recommending the Beas Kund trek. They were smitten by the mountain views!

“It gives you close, base-to-summit views of big mountains like Friendship Peak, Shitidhar, Ladakhi, and Hanuman Tibba. On a clear day, you’ll also be able to spot Mt. Indrasen and Deo Tibba of the Pir Panjal range,” Nitesh Kumar, one of our senior-most trek leaders and explorers, told me. These kinds of views are usually reserved for hardcore mountaineers after days of rigorous climbing. And here was Beas Kund, offering these views within 4 days of trekking.

So if you have 4 days out of Manali, this is a trek you must choose. This trek is suitable for anyone with a good fitness level, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned trekker.

4. Bhrigu Lake

one day trek near manali

The astounding grasslands on the Bhrigu Lake trek. Photo by Gatreddi Avinash.

Difficulty : Moderate (Level 2) | Duration : 4 days | Highest Altitude : 14,009 ft

This is the most misunderstood trek in Himachal. For one, most people think it is an easy trek. It is not. It is a steady climb all the way to 14,000 feet to reach Bhrigu Lake.

Secondly, most assume Bhrigu Lake is the attraction of the trek. While the setting of the lake is superb, it is the grasslands of the trek that will astound you. Every time our trek leaders do the trek, they fall more in love with it. The texture and colours of the grass change every few feet as you climb through them.

The grasslands are fresh, green, and expansive, stretching as far as the eye can see! From these grassy knolls, we see the mountains of Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar dominating the skyline.

Stepping out on the other side of the lake, the Panduropa side of the slope is another treasure of green that stuns the eye.

Finally, the Bhrigu Lake trek is beautiful and extremely adventurous to get there. Trekkers love the thrill of climbing to 14,000 feet above the lake. In the alpine section, you are likely to find a lot of snow patches, even until July.

5. Miyar Valley

one day trek near manali

The striking colours of Miyar Valley. Photo by Tuhin Rao.

Difficulty : Moderate (Level 3) | Duration : 8 days | Highest Altitude : 13,202 ft

If you have not trekked in Lahaul, then you have not experienced real trekking.

“Many people compare Lahaul to Spiti and Ladakh. But Lahaul is nothing like these regions. It’s completely different, with barren landscapes interspersed with bursts of green and an abundance of colours. You’ll find it hard to imagine that such an oasis can exist in the middle of a desert,” says Arjun Majumdar, founder-CEO of Indiahikes, who was stunned to witness the beauty of Lahaul for the first time at the age of nine.

The location of the Miyar Valley trek makes it very special. It lies in the heart of Lahaul, between Zanskar and Chamba.

The route to this valley alternates between remote mountain valleys, quaint villages, and flower beds dominated by the overwhelming presence of Himalayan orchids. The rugged terrain mixed with the greenery of Lahaul is a striking contrast. Added to that, the colours of Lahaul make the trek more verdant.

But it is a slightly challenging trek. Every day, there are long distances to cover. So ensure you get extra fit for this trek.

Bonus Trek - Pin Bhaba Pass

one day trek near manali

The stunning yet stark landscape of Pin Bhaba Pass trek. Photo by Dr Jitendra Tanna.

Difficulty: Difficult (Level 1) | Duration: 9 days | Highest altitude: 16,105 ft

Here’s a bonus trek that doesn’t technically start from Manali. But it ends at Manali. You get to Manali after you cross a mountain pass from the green Kinnaur to the brown deserts of Spiti.

Pin Bhaba Pass is hands down the most dramatic pass crossing trek on our list. That is a bold statement to make. Especially when we have so many pass crossing treks.

Here’s a page from Arjun’s diary, which he wrote on the Pin Bhaba trek. It makes for a very captivating reading, almost like events are unfolding before you:

I remember it being early in the morning; the sun had just broken out in the valley below. The valley was awash with the colours of the early morning sun. The colours took me by surprise. The valley was a deep green; in the golden light, it was beginning to turn a lighter hue.

The higher hillsides, where some rare wild bushes grew, were bright orange. The white snow summits above them made for quite a contrast. At 15,000 ft, I was still climbing to the pass. It surprised me. From that altitude, I didn’t expect to see such richness of colour.

An hour later, we were at the pass at 16,100 feet. On the other side, Spiti. I had not expected to see a valley that was pink in colour. But there it was, right in front of me, miles and miles of pink. How could the earth turn pink?

Even now, I cannot imagine how, in less than an hour, the lushness of green could change to the most unlikely colour of the earth — pink .

The rewards of doing the Pin Bhaba Pass trek are unparalleled. You need some trekking experience and good fitness to do the trek. It’s a trek that will test your endurance and your mental grit as well.

View the Pin Bhaba Pass trek

That brings us to the end of the top treks to do right out of Manali.

These are best done in June, July, August, and September.

June would have snow patches. July and August are lush green months, albeit with some

monsoon showers. September is when the green valley transforms into a golden yellow.

Many of our trek groups are already full, and I don’t want you to miss out on trekking in Himachal, especially out of Manali. I hope this email serves as a timely reminder for you.

If you have any questions, drop them in the comments below :) Our team will address them promptly.
