utility websites

The traveller map.

An amazing, canonical, interactive atlas of Charted Space . Views are adjustable and almost infinitely printable, although the learning curve to do anything but poke around on the map is significant. This datasource is constantly under review and hands-down the best overall reference on systems and worlds for the Third Imperium setting

The Traveller World Builder

Another awesome software resource, the TWB applies the T5 world design ruleset and generates maps for any world , from any of the canon worlds on the Traveller Map to a world you input the UWP for. The builder can also build out the entire system, providing a link to map each world and moon. Definitely a must-visit.

The Traveller Wiki

In its own words, the Traveller Wiki is “… the AAB Imperial Encyclopedia, a Traveller Starship Library and game resource database where you can contribute to the 40 years of Traveller history.” It’s is a living reference document that undergoes constant revision and update by Traveller scholars and fans. It is the definitive resource for researching items of interest about Traveller or the Third Imperium.

Far Future Enterprises

This is Marc Miller’s company , ( newer site here ) the producer of the currently-active Traveller5 and copy write holder of a staggering amount of historical Traveller material. The look is unapologetically old-school and the process to buy can feel a little clunky, but everything Traveller except the DGP content or Mongoose’s current works are on offer here. You can use PayPal to purchase CDs, but if you drop a note to FFE and ask nicely they’ll be happy to send you your purchases on a thumb drive… just on the off-chance you don’t happen to have access to a functional CD-ROM drive.

periodicals

Imperiallines.

Imperiallines is the current live online “‘zine” supporting Marc Miller’s Traveller5. In the last few years it has produced 2 issues( #6 and #& ) on an as-we-can schedule. The content is 100% canon, either coming directly from Marc or approved by him. It’s only available for a fee; I get mine at DriveThruRPG .

Freelance Traveller

This is an excellent bi-monthly-ish online periodical featuring non-canon fan content. Editing, layout, and copy are all well done and range over a wide variety of types including Patron and Amber Zone adventures, gear write ups, reviews of supplements or conventions, and much more. FT is free to the masses easy to submit to.

CT Journal of the Travellers Aid Society ( JTAS )

The very first periodical-based source of canon material supplementing the game, JTAS was published to add depth and increase the fanbase for Classic Traveller. Much content and thinking from the articles during the run have been incorporated into subsequent versions of the game. You can purchase a set from #1-34 from DriveThruRPG or from the FFE website on the “Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society” CD.

Traveller Chronicle

This was the ongoing magazine produced by DGP in the late 80s/early 90s when MegaTraveller was active, and the content focuses exclusively on the Rebellion and Hard Times settings. You can get issues from DriveThruRPG or directly from Far Future Enterprises  as art of the offerings on the “Apocrypha 3” CD.

Dragon Magazine

Particularly in the earlier years of its run, Dragon Magazine hosted many articles about Traveller. An index to those articles, authors, and page numbers can be found here , while PDF issues of Dragon Magazine are ( as of this writing ) available for free online at Annarchive ( you’ll have to find/search for this yourself; I’m not certain about the legality of this repository. )

Currently hosted on the Traveller Wiki, the description from there – “…was a fanzine put together by Jae Campbell and J. Duncan Law-Green and published in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The primary objective was the mapping of the Dagudashaag and generation of the complete library data. Each author was allowed to cover different eras with their articles, with the hope that the reader could adapt to their own preferences.” Complete editions of issues 1-13 are available for free.

Steve Jackson Games resurrected the idea of the Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society as an ongoing source of all things GT while they had an active license. This content is currently no longer offered by GURPS in any form ( sniffsniff ), but you can grab it from FFE under “GURPS #2 CD-ROM”

Mongoose JTAS

The latest incarnation of the Journal of the TAS is produced by Mongoose Publishing to compliment and extend their 2nd edition Traveller game. There are currently 6 issues that were successfully kickstarted and sold as a set, but at present you can only buy them one at a time on the Mongoose website. Here’s a link to Issue #1

Robert Eaglestone successfully Kickstarted this fanzine “with most of the material suggested by fans who love Traveller. It’s about discussion, example, and bold ideas.” It is T5 centric, though the material could generally be used in any version. Though the publishing schedule is a bit long Mr. Eaglestone is clearly committed to delivering quality content. The  first two issues are available on DTRPG; here’s a link to the first one.

communities

Citizens of the imperium.

Official forum for the Traveller brand, Citizens of the Imperium supports conversation about all versions but shows a distinct favor towards older versions, CT most of all. Lively discussions, profoundly pedantic and out in the weeds about most any detail. Moderation is active and opinionated. Definitely not a safe space and possibly off-putting to a new gamer, definitely fertile ground for the opinionated grognard. The forum itself has a very old school look and feel which reportedly is not a bug, but rather a feature. CotI is the place to connect with the “inner circle” of Traveller. CotI features robust repositories of fan-created images, fiction, and game aids as well as play-Traveller-by-post support.

Mongoose Traveller

Mongoose Publishing hosts its own forum to discuss both of its editions ( 1st and 2nd ) of Traveller. Threads are not organized beyond most-recent-topic-as-highest, moderation is almost non-existent. Movers and shakers for the Mongoose versions frequent the board, and getting most questions answered by people in the know is easy.

GURPS Traveller

GURPS hosts a subforum on its boards for Traveller, despite its own license for the game no longer being active. Threads are organized simply, as in the Mongoose forums – most recent at the top. Certainly the focus is on the GURPS version of the game and conversation there is done almost universally by fans. The tone is friendly, but the board is not as active as the other communities listed here – in the last month there have only been active conversations in 5 of the topics.

Reddit – Traveller subReddit

Most frequented by Redditors who also happen to be gamers, this community is moderately active and almost always cordial and helpful. Discussion about recent versions of Traveller is slightly more common, but discussion of any topic relevant to Traveller is encouraged. The Traveller subReddit occasionally hosts design contests for ships, etc.

Facebook – Traveller-RPG

The FB closed ( you have to ask to be admitted ) Traveller group is an active, eclectic range of commentary questions, and random thoughts about the game in all its versions. Memes and posts about outside content that could be relevant to a Traveller game are common. Occasional version warring happens here, but moderators are active and work to maintain a friendly space. The FB group is not a great place to easily connect with Traveller movers and shakers – those in the inner circle or that regularly produce content – although a few of those people monitor the group on occasion. In my experience the FB group is most easily-approached, value-for-your-time Traveller online community. Quality of responses can vary considerably, but there will be no shortage of responses.

Hi everyone, I’m new to Traveller and am attempting to learn about the traveller universe. Is there a sourcebook that covers the basic history/lore of the game from the beginning to present day? I’ve been reading the Pirates of Drinax books and there’s a lot of info about one group or another but I’d like to have a better understanding of the timeline and and how all these different factions came about without having to buy half a dozen books with a deep dive into the individual factions.

More than 30,000 years ago there was a race of psionic winged lizard people, who today are called the Droyne. The Droyne were physically and mentally varied due to a high degree of mutation, but their psionic caste-based social system kept them ironically very stable. For many centuries they remained happily stagnant. But Droyne intelligence varies, from barely sapient in those who don't go through the correct psionic rituals in adolescence to very, very smart. One anomalous Droyne was ultra-intelligent, and unlike other Droyne, ambitious. This great scientist took control of his people, and through psionic and scientific wonders, achieved immortality. He transformed the Droyne into a starfaring empire. This high-tech society would one day be known as the Ancients, and the guy behind it all came to be known as Yaskoydray -- "Grandfather".

Grandfather needed subjects and servants for his experiments, as did his clone children. The Ancients visited Terra, finding primitive humans. Populations of humans were carried to worlds and research sites across the Ancients' empire. Some were genetically altered to survive better in alien environments. Grandfather was eventually disappointed in his adaptable stock, as his Sons happily seeded human populations on worlds of their own. Grandfather decided to make a race wholescale, and uplifted Terran canines to make the Vargr race. Fickle as ever, though, he soon decided they weren't right either, and moved on to robots. Eventually, Grandfather decided that his Sons were interfering with his own grand experiments. Being the amoral super-scientist he was, his solution was to try to kill them all. The Ancients empire was torn apart by war.

The Ancients fell from power, with remnants of their high technology scattered across their former territory. Groups of Droyne, populations of humans, and the Vargr on their designated homeworld were left, devoid of high technology but often with mythic tales of their ancestors or creators. Thousands of years passed. Some human and Droyne populations died out, some Droyne forgot the correct psionic rituals and became barely sapient Chirpers. But some populations survived. One human population on the planet Vland did very well, partly because the local biochemistry was incompatible, so as long as they were careful with food issues they didn't need worry about plague, etc. The people of Vland -- the Vilani -- formed a conservative but expansionist nation and in time developed the jump drive, becoming the first nation of the modern age to reach the stars.

The Vilani had a complex and rigid social order that ensured their stability, but it was dependent on the lack of external rivals. The Vilani conquered a number of other, more primitive peoples, both human and non-human. When they met other humans with space empires, however, they weren't happy. The Vilani were unique in having invented jump drive, though. The Geonee humans had scavenged it from Ancients ruins, while the Suerrat humans used generation ships. The Vilani then declared that because of this, they were the Major Race, and anyone who hadn't invented jump drive, Minor Races. As the Major Race, they should be in charge. The Consolidation Wars followed, with the Vilani conquering all other spacefaring cultures in range.

The Vilani Imperium was sprawling but stable. Too stable, really, it was stagnant. In time, and to the Vilani's annoyance, their Major Race distinction had to accommodate other races who had developed the jump drive independently. The Zhodani were a human people who had embraced psionics. The Hivers were a peaceful, manipulative race of land-starfish who were building a multi-species federation. The K'kree were militant herbivore herd animals. All had invented jump drive and formed their own empires, albeit distant from Vilani space. More worryingly, the Vargr had achieved the jump drive, and while forming large, enduring empires is rather foreign to the Vargr mindset, they happily formed a string of pirate empires and chaotic star nations on the Vilani border. A distraction for the order-obsessed Vilani. On the other side of their empire, their borders had stopped only a parsec or two from Terra...

The Terrans now invented the jump drive. Although the original human stock, they were a bit late to the party, having not been aided by the Ancients. Unlike the stagnant Vilani, the Terrans were dynamic, even reckless. They chafed against the vast, repressive star empire that had claimed most of local space. The Vilani saw the Terrans as barbarians, the Terrans resented being told that the Vilani owned the stars, the patents on jump drive, etc. Conflict broke out in time. Had it been Terra Vs the whole Vilani Imperium, obviously Terra would be done for, but initially it was just "border province more interested in internal politics" Vs "upstart distraction".

This was the period of the "Interstellar Wars", which saw the Vilani gradually cede ground to the Terrans, both astrographically and economically. The vulnerability of Vilani to Terran diseases didn't help, and made relations worse. Given that they were massively outnumbered, the Terrans tried to create allies through uplift of dolphins, apes, and other animals, producing new sophont populations. Eventually, the Terran Confederation built ties with restless Vilani subjects, like the Geonee, the Suerrat, and the alien Vegans, and the Terrans took control of the Vilani Imperium. Terran military personnel were left trying to govern massive Vilani territories. When the Terran government made to introduce disastrous post-conquest policies, the navy launched a quick coup, declaring that both the Vilani Imperium and the Terran Conderation were defunct, and all human territories would now be governed as one by the military government, as the Rule of Man. This would also be known in later times as the Second Imperium, or (to cynical Vilani) as the Ramshackle Empire.

The Terrans had inherited the bloated Vilani empire, but they couldn't really sustain it. The dynamic economic models and politics that had helped them gain control were less suited to maintaining such a sprawling territory, even with the help of Vland's bureaucratic framework. The Rule of Man lasted a few centuries, but suffered an economic collapse. Interstellar trade and travel became rare, and many worlds dependent on outsystem trade collapsed. This insular period was called the Long Night. It was a dark time for humaniti, although not for a new Major Race called Aslan by the humans -- the Aslan expanded very quickly, and overran a fair few human colonies in their obsessive quest for new land.

Eventually, space travel started up again as planets recovered. Small empires and confederations emerged, many of them culturally now a blend of Vilani and Terran (or Solomani as the Terran cultures were now known), sometimes with Minor Race influence. One of these was the Sylean Federation, based on Sylea, a planet that had been a First and Second Imperium holding. The local culture, now a blend of Vilani, Solomani and native Sylean human influence, produced a new cheap energy source, and a savvy business leader used it to become a great power. He claimed continuity with the Vilani Imperium and Rule of Man, declaring that the Sylean Federation and the feudal network he was establishing were now the Third Imperium, laying claim to all territories that had been part of the prior two. So began a great expansion through various political, diplomatic, economic and military means, quickly establishing the Third Imperium as a superpower.

The default setting for the universe is 1100 years later, with the Third Imperium and its nobility as the feudal overlord to 11,000 planetary societies, plus a few regional cultural blocks that retain a distinct identity. One of those regions, the Solomani Sphere centred on Terra, seceded from the Imperium when the nobility refused to back their policies of cultural supremacy, leading to a war, a new Solomani Confederation, and bad feelings -- especially since Terra ended up on the Imperial side of the border. There were also a series of border wars with the Zhodani Consulate and relations are poor because the Zhodani consider psionics to be the foundation of civilised society while the Imperium ended up violently anti-psionic, repressing its use. Nonetheless, things are generally stable, the Imperium prospers. It has wary relationships with its neighbours. Zhodani and Solomani plot and are plotted against, each part of a propaganda war with the Imperium. The Aslan are always hungry for land; the Vargr remain chaotic and corsair-happy; the Hivers manipulate and meddle; the K'kree are definitely going to trample all those disgusting meat eaters one day, just you wait; the Droyne are enigmatic and somehow both everywhere and beneath the radar; and Minor Races are both eager to contribute to Imperial politics and frustrated by their repression. And that's where things stand, really. In the default setting.

Wow, thanks, that’s a great overview! I take it sophont populations means intelligent life ?

Yep, Traveller uses "Sophont" for intelligent, self-aware life. And there's a distinction between Apes and apes, or Dolphins and dolphins -- because some of them are now intelligent peoples, Minor Races like any other, but there are also still old-fashioned non-sapient ones around.

@G'Naakbusters This is a great write up for the referee but it leads me to a version question. In Classic GDW Traveller wasn't the Terran theory of Humaniti's Origins still in dispute circa 1105? There were adventures that changed the course of accepted evolutionary theory. Should some of your excellent articles be redacted for character use?

THE TRAVELLER – Review

the traveller wiki

We’ve seen plenty of movies and TV series featuring heroic cops who nail the worst of the perps by “going rogue” to one extent or another. This French series THE TRAVELLER serves up a protagonist in grizzled detective Thomas Bareski (Eric Cantona), who not only goes rogue, but native. Though he’s long been one of France’s most successful cops, he’s frustrated by the number of elusive killers they couldn’t identify or convict; especially the ones he nailed who either walked on a technicality or worked a deal for a lighter sentence than they deserved. He thinks the honchos give up too soon on too many violent acts, leaving the door open for more crimes, and precluding closure for victims and their survivors. So he resigns, buys a van and travels mainly off the grid as he dives into cold cases, usually finding patterns that reveal serial killers, or at least repeat offenders, remaining at large. Luckily, he’s unofficially backed by a high-ranking prosecutor who can legitimize his off-the-book pursuits and provide limited access to case files, forensics and other intel.

Cantona, gray-bearded and grungy, lives off the land and the kindness of those who appreciate his efforts coming so long after the rest of the authorities had moved on. Some feel quite the opposite, complicating his quests. The first five of eight 90-minute episodes (with English subtitles) have begun streaming in the U.S. Each is self-contained in a new locale with a new crime and set of characters, though some elements carry over. No cliffhangers spurring the need to binge. The stories are well-written, serving up a satisfactory array of suspects and twists to keep viewers guessing throughout.

Oddly for a series featuring only one regular cast member, Cantona’s Bareski is replaced for the last four episodes by a somewhat younger version of his character, Yann Kandinsky (Bruno Debrandt), who shares the same motivation, and takes over Bareski’s lifestyle and pursuits, including his van. I can’t disclose more about the succession without spoilers. Neither of them smile much; both are more intuitive than forensic. Anyone who likes seeing the bared butts of middle-aged guys can groove on the rear views of their ablutions in lakes and ponds by which they’ve parked for a night. For the less enthralled, those shots are mercifully brief. No other nudity.

Several installments include somewhat more action than the average European procedural, though well short of the fights, chases and gunplay levels of our accustomed prime-time network fare. Supporting performances are solid and diverse, enhancing the realistic look and feel of the various communities their pursuits cover. There’s little humor in the scripts, so watch this one when you’re in the mood for a serious crime drama that satisfies the cerebrum, visually enhanced by the villages and environs drawing our heroes’ endeavors.

3 out of 4 stars

THE TRAVELLER, in French with subtitles, streams on MHzChoice as of March 21, 2023.

The Traveler

From Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki

The Traveler is a mysterious spherical paracausal entity associated with the Light . Massive in scale, it hangs motionless in the skies above the Last City built in its shadow. Once responsible for terraforming the worlds of the Sol System , it was rendered largely inactive during the Collapse , when its ancient enemy arrived and launched a devastating assault on human civilization.

The Traveler is an ancient and immensely powerful machine entity, the source of Ghosts and the Light-based powers of the Guardians . It is a source of Light , though not the only source in the universe. Its outer shell is made of lead, neutronium and "electroweak matter" [2] , the latter based on a fundamental force that hasn't existed since the dawn of time.

The interior workings of the Traveler remain a mystery. The Ghost Balthazar claimed that Ghosts originate within the Womb, a place inside the Traveler described as a "cosmos inside a bottle" or an "infinite space enclosed within a celestial egg", where trillions of star-like souls orbit each other in a complex weave. Another Ghost named Peach was dismissive of this description, contending that neither she nor Balthazar can remember the time within the Traveler. [3] Fenchurch Everis claims to have been inside the Traveler, but no one has been able to confirm the veracity of his story.

the traveller wiki

The Traveler seems to be motivated by pure altruism; it has never wished to be worshipped as a god, nor has it made its presence known any more than necessary to cultivate a civilization. In the past, whenever its work was finished, it would simply leave without fanfare. [4] It would seem then that its defense of humanity was an extraordinary act under dire circumstances [2] .

The Ancient Past

The origins of the Traveler are unknown, although it is known to have existed for billions of years. In one of her messages to the Guardian through Sloane, Ahsa makes reference to " two halves of a whole, long divided ," which in context seems to suggest that the Traveler and the Veil were once part of a single entity, or at least share a common origin.

As revealed by Ahsa , billions of years ago the Traveler lay dormant and half-buried on a desolate planet, where it was discovered by a humanoid species. It then awakened, either of its own accord or as a result of the species' actions, and proceeded to terraform the planet and bestow paracausal gifts to its discoverers, much as it would later do with many other species. This brought about a golden age for the species that lasted millions of years. The civilization worshipped the Traveler as a deity, calling it "The Gardener".

Although the Traveler brought the civilization great prosperity, it never made any attempt to communicate or impart wisdom or guidance. As a result, the society began to crave meaning, and sought to find something that would bring order and purpose to an otherwise open-ended existence. In their studies of the Traveler, they also came to view the Light as a fundamentally capricious and chaotic force, equally capable of bringing life or death with no ultimate justification for either.

At some point, the species discovered that the Traveler had a counterpart entity, located in a distant star system. They named this entity the Veil, and determined that it was a source of power that was the opposite of the Light, one linked to the mind and consciousness rather than the physical world: the Darkness . In studying the Darkness, they discovered that it held the means to guide the universe into a perfected, eternal form, a " Final Shape " that would last to the end of time and beyond. In this, they found the purpose they had sought for so long.

In order to achieve their goal, the civilization determined that they needed to bring the Traveler and the Veil into close proximity, strengthening their connection and in so doing granting them the ability to alter reality itself. They set out to locate and retrieve the Veil, and brought it back to their homeworld so that they could form a link between it and the Traveler.

However, the Traveler was apparently unwilling to allow this outcome, and responded by leaving the planet and fleeing into the distant reaches of space. Unwilling to abandon their quest, the civilization used the Darkness to bind their consciousnesses together, merging themselves into a single, unfathomably powerful entity: the Witness.

Empowered by the Darkness and commanding a fleet of pyramidal ships, the Witness left its world behind and began a crusade to find the Traveler and unite it with the Veil, and in doing so bring about the Final Shape. [5]

Billions of years ago, the Traveler visited the Lubraeans and uplifted their civilization. However, it eventually left, and the Lubraean civilization gradually descended into a military dictatorship restricted to a single city, with those who rejected the regime wandering the wilderness as nomads. [6]

The Rise of the Hive

Some time after visiting Lubrae, the Traveler visited the system of the gas giant planet Fundament, where it uplifted a species known as the Ammonite who lived on one of Fundament's 52 moons. [7] Following this, it sought to uplift a primitive species known as the Krill that resided on a floating continent in Fundament's planet-wide ocean. However, the Witness sought to use the Krill for its own purposes, and by manipulating a young female Krill, Sathona, through her dead Worm familiar, it led her and her two sisters to find the Worm Gods imprisoned within the planet's core- an event which would lead to the Krill becoming the Hive . The Traveler subsequently fled Fundament's system, leaving the Ammonite to die at the hands of the Hive.

Later on, the Hive would also encounter and defeat the Harmony , another civilization uplifted by the Traveler. [8]

Riis and The Whirlwind

The Traveler visited the planet Riis at some point before coming to the Sol System , uplifting the Eliksni species. Unfortunately, as with every world visited by the Traveler, Riis was attacked by the Black Fleet, as well as possibly Oryx's Hive. [9] As it had many times before, the Traveler fled, leaving the Eliksni at the mercy of the Black Fleet as their civilization was destroyed. This event became known in Eliksni history as the Whirlwind.

The Golden Age

According to the poem Dreams of Alpha Lupi , during its journey between systems, it detected a "face" emerging from the Sun, later hearing a roar that contained something that it described as "a lucid melody". The Traveler felt joy, as it felt "the first hope in ages transform [it]," and it resolved to become strong enough to fight the Darkness. [10] Although the meaning behind the poem is unclear, it appears the Traveler chose to visit Earth for a reason.

The Traveler first came to human attention when it appeared around Jupiter and terraformed two of its moons. Initially dubbed "Moon X", it quickly became the center of international attention. After finishing its work on Jupiter, it vanished for fourteen months, reappeared to terraform Mercury , vanished again for seven months, and then appeared again to terraform Venus . [11] Questions about the identity of Moon X abounded, and cults worshiping it emerged, some of which fell into conflict. [12] Other cults held demonstrations calling for the unification of Earth's governments. [13]

When Moon X was detected approaching Mars, a mission to intercept it was hastily organized. [14] Initially known as Project Catamaran, the effort was renamed Ares One on the day of launch. [15] Four individuals were chosen to be apart of this historic mission: Jacob Hardy , the pilot and mission commander; Evie Calumet , a theoretical physicist who first discovered Moon X; Qiao , the navigator; and M. Mihaylova , an artificial intelligence specialist. While the team played a game of basketball and brainstormed ideas for the mission, Evie dubbed Moon X as the "Traveler" due it moving with a seeming purpose. [16] By the time the ship landed on Mars , [17] the Traveler had brought the first rain to the desert planet. [18] [19] It helped humanity expand across the solar system, teaching humans new technologies, helping them terraform planets and leading humanity into a Golden Age .

The Collapse

Some time later, the Black Fleet appeared in the Sol System, leading to the destruction of almost all human civilization in an event known as the Collapse . [20] For the first time, the Traveler decided to stand and fight the Black Fleet, [21] as it abandoned its work on Io and raced to rescue its "children", humanity. [2]

The exact timeline of events during the Collapse remains unclear, but it is known that the Traveler made a final stand against the Black Fleet, incurring severe damage in the process. During the battle, it managed to project a beam of Light into the far reaches of the system to protect the Exodus Colony Ship Yang Liwei from the Black Fleet, resulting in the ship being swallowed by a kugelblitz generated from the conflict between Light and Darkness.

The Black Fleet subsequently withdrew after the Witness was tricked by Savathûn, the Witch Queen into calling off the attack, with Savathûn having killed the Disciple Nezarec and hidden the Veil , a mysterious paracausal entity evidently key to the Witness' plans, away on Neptune. After the battle was over, the Traveler remained floating a relatively short distance above the Earth's surface, seemingly dormant, having apparently been stripped of its senses and "flesh" and made blind, deaf and mute to the outside world. [22]

As humanity struggled to rebuild itself from these events, the crippled Traveler gifted its protection and powers to the recovering humans. Although the times after the war were difficult, humanity persevered and with the help of this celestial guardian, and the humans eventually began to re-explore their terrestrial and solar domain. [23]

The Dark Age

In its last breath, the Traveler created the Ghosts , to seek out those who can wield its light as a weapon. The Ghosts revived fallen warriors as Lightbearers , with the intent of protecting humanity when the Traveler no longer could. [24] Unfortunately, many Lightbearers would choose to become Warlords , subjugating the survivors of the Collapse throughout the Dark Age , where humanity faced the threat of not only the Warlords and the hardships of survival, but also the threat of alien races such as the Fallen . Lightbearers with integrity would band together to stand up to the Warlords in groups such as the Iron Lords or the Pilgrim Guard . [25] [26] Over time, the Warlords would be beaten back.

The City Age

The remnants of humanity on Earth built the Last City beneath the resting place of the Traveler, where they were safe from the continuous onslaught of the various alien races and the now-declining Warlords. Over time, the people of the early City formed factions, dividing it and marking the beginning of the Faction Wars , which threatened to bring the City to its knees. It was during this time that a new generation of Lightbearers known as Guardians emerged, taking a stand to end the fighting to focus on the outside alien threats. [27]

Eventually, a lone Guardian embarked on a quest that would help the Traveler slowly restore its power, first by stopping a Hive ritual in the Chamber of Night that was siphoning Light from the Traveler, and then destroying the heart of the Black Garden . [28] After these events, the Traveler remained seemingly catatonic, showing no outward signs of activity.

Two years after the Taken War , the Cabal Empire 's Red Legion launched a major invasion of Earth headed by the leader of the empire, Dominus Ghaul . A devastating surprise attack on the Last City was launched, trapping the Traveler in a cage to siphon off its Light while separating it from the Guardian forces. [29] [30] Though trapped, the Traveler sent visions to the now Lightless Guardians to seek out one of its fragments in the European Dead Zone , whereby they could regain their powers. Dominus Ghaul attempted and failed to win the Traveler's approval to make him into a Guardian, and simply took the Light by force. When he gloated in front of the Traveler, the Traveler suddenly broke its cage and destroyed Ghaul, as well as slowly healing itself by drawing fragments back into itself. With the invasion ended and the city retaken, the Traveler was declared no longer dead but living once more.

Despite having awoken, the Traveler has still remained hovering above the Last City and has not taken any direct action. However, Benedict 99-40 claims that the Traveler has been busy.

A year after the Traveler woke, Ikora Rey revealed that the Traveler had been speaking to her and several other Guardians through visions since its awakening. Ikora then instructs Guardians to follow visions of light. Eventually, the visions lead the Guardians to Io , where the remnant light there grants them new abilities.

An Old Foe Returns

the traveller wiki

As the Guardians continued to protect the Last City and the Solar System from various threats, ranging from a looming Lunar Hive Fortress, a resurgent Vex invasion, scheming Psion Flayers looking to subvert time, to the Red Legion superweapon, The Almighty being turned into a kamikaze weapon directed towards the Last City, the Traveler's old enemy, the Darkness, slowly made its way towards the system. Though the Guardians soon gained a glimpse of the Darkness from their discovery of a Pyramid on Luna, the threat continued to ominously hang over them, especially as the Darkness made contact with The Guardian, addressing them not as their enemy nor their friend but as their "salvation".

In time, following the Almighty's destruction, a massive fleet of Pyramid vessels descended upon the Sol System, confirming the Vanguard's fears that the Traveler's counterpart has returned. However, as the Guardians work in deciphering what the Darkness wants, the Traveler continues to hang motionless over the Last City, even as the Pyramids touch down on various worlds. Even Zavala noted that the Traveler appeared to do nothing to combat its ancient enemy. Nonetheless, the Guardians continue to work diligently on figuring out the purposes in the messages the Darkness is sending while protecting their holdouts in the system.

As the Pyramids approached and consumed Io , Mars , Mercury and Titan , the Traveler, in an event which saw all fireteams return to the Last City to witness it, gathered light in order to repair the damage which had been caused by the events of the Red War.

The Traveler later called out to the Crow , sending him dreams of flying over the European Dead Zone and other areas he had previously visited. When the Guardian went to investigate the locations featured in these dreams, they discovered paracausal feathers at each site. Later, the Crow and the Guardian went to a region of the EDZ featured in these dreams, and were led by a spectral hawk made of Light to a previously-undiscovered shard of the Traveler. On top of the shard lay an effigy of the Hand Cannon Hawkmoon , crafted out of the material of the Traveler's outer shell.

Disturbing Revelations

During the events of The Witch Queen , The Guardian discovers that the Traveler, seemingly intentionally, chose to grant the Light to Savathûn, the Witch Queen and her Lucent Brood for an unknown purpose. Through usage of the Relic on Mars, it is learned that The Witness tricked the Hive into becoming its servants to avoid them being uplifted by the Traveler itself, like what occurred with many other civilizations. As a method of protecting the Traveler from destruction, the Light-bearing Savathûn attempted a ritual to bring the Traveler into her throne world, after which she would seal off entry for all beings. Despite succeeding in drawing the Traveler in, Savathûn is defeated at her own game and the spell is broken, causing the Traveler to return to the Last City's sky. Whether it truly wished to be brought to the throne world, wishing for the Hive to supplant the Humans, Exo, and Awoken as its Guardians, and if it even purposely chose the Hive, is still unknown.

At some point during these events, the Disciple of the Witness Rhulk had the Scorn under his command bring him a Ghost for study. His efforts were thwarted by the Traveler, who took direct control of the Ghost and rebuked Rhulk before causing the Ghost to explode.

Nowhere Left to Run

Despite the disturbing revelations of the Traveler gifting the Hive the Light, it still remained within the Last City as the Guardians prepare for the Witness's return and prevent a Second Collapse from happening. Though the Guardians gained allies in the form of the Imperial Cabal and the Eliksni House of Light , battled resurgent enemies such as Calus becoming a Disciple of the Witness and Eramis breaking free of her Stasis cocoon, the Traveler's old foe drew closer. Lately, the Guardians worked to restore the Warmind Rasputin so he can regain control over the Warsat Network before Eramis and Xivu Arath's Wrathborn , forced to work alongside the likes of Clovis Bray I , who would later be relieved to possess the delusion that only he was worthy of being humanity's savior as he originally intended to have Rasputin destroy and then replace the Traveler. Following this, Clovis was cast out but Eramis nonetheless gained access to Rasputin's protocol to attack the Traveler, ABHORRENT IMPERATIVE, in the event that the Traveler ever intended to leave Earth.

Racing to stop Eramis, the Guardians boarded Seraph Station, the command hub of the Network, and though they succeeded in uploading Rasputin into the station, Eramis managed to activate his protocol for the Warsats to attack the Traveler. At this point, the Last City became active as the Traveler began to drift away from Earth, causing uncertainty to spread amongst its denizens. Believing that the Great Machine is abandoning another civilization to save itself, Eramis gave the Warsats the order to fire. However, Rasputin succeeded in activating his AURORA SACRIFICE self-destruct protocol, destroying the entire Warsat Network along with himself, saving the Traveler, who remained still within Earth's outer orbit instead of leaving entirely. Confused and enraged on why the Traveler isn't fleeing, The Witness answered its servant, stating that the Traveler simply has no place left to run, as it had arrived in the Sol System with The Black Fleet and a vessel containing his latest Disciple. Zavala however, believes that the Traveler is actually taking a stand against it's old foe.

After the loss of the Warsat Network, the Witness and its Black Fleet moved on the Traveler. Alongside the Vanguard fleet, the Traveler attempted to defend itself by firing a beam of Light at the Witness' Pyramid, causing paracausal flora to sprout over the Pyramid's surface, but this did not hinder the Witness as it left its Pyramid behind and floated out through empty space to meet the Traveler directly, effortlessly destroying any enemy vessel that attempted to stop it. Eight other Pyramids took up a formation around the Traveler resembling an eight-pointed star. The Witness attempted to open a gateway using the Traveler, but was denied before seeing a vision of Neptune where the means it needed to create its gateway, The Veil , was located, sending its Disciple, Calus and his Shadow Legion , to acquire it.

Despite the efforts of the Guardian, Osiris and the Cloud Striders in slaying Calus, The Witness nonetheless won in acquiring The Veil, allowing it to establish a connection with the Traveler and open a gateway by inscribing a triangle on the surface of the Traveler. This opened a triangular portal, which absorbed several Pyramids before The Witness entered, leaving the Vanguard and their allies confused and dismayed.

Exactly what this outcome means for the Traveler remains unclear; the Guardians still have access to their Light-based abilities, but their Ghosts feel a sense of emptiness where the Traveler used to be. The Vanguard regards the Traveler as having been lost, but its physical form remains in orbit around Earth, with the giant triangular portal having stayed open after the Witness passed through.

Later during the Clash of the Hive Gods , Immaru claims that he can still sense the Traveler within his light but differently. He describes it as a sense of desperation, tension, and terror. He also claims that The Witness is doing something terrible to it, describing the Traveler as a god screaming for help. Whether his claims have any truth remains to be seen.

Status variations

The Traveler's emission of Light appears to undergo cyclical fluctuations. These fluctuations are tracked by the Tower and reported over loudspeaker in the Tower North. [28] Traveler status announcements include:

  • "Traveler at 1 revolution per zenith."
  • "Traveler approaching zenith."
  • "Traveler entering zenith."
  • "Traveler intensity at zenith."
  • "Traveler exiting zenith."
  • "Traveler declining 1 revolution per zenith."
  • "Traveler entering declining phase."
  • "Traveler entering retrograde phase."
  • "Traveler entering equilibrium."
  • "Traveler approaching theta state."
  • "Traveler entering theta state."
  • "Traveler in theta state."
  • "Traveler exiting epicycle. Returning to main cycle."
  • "Traveler at minimum valence. The Light persists."

  • The Traveler first appeared in another Bungie game, Halo 3: ODST , where a hidden poster made it appear innocuously like the Moon. [31]
  • The Traveler's size has changed over the course of development. Early concept art depicts a Traveler the size of a small moon orbiting Earth, while its finalized appearance in the game shows it hovering much closer to Earth's surface, within the atmosphere, and roughly the size of the Last City. According to a Reddit post made on /r/DestinytheGame , players were able to determine the Traveler's in-game size (as seen from the Tower and Bannerfall) as 1.2 kilometres in radius. [32] Destiny 2 concept art (see gallery) revealed that the Traveler's diameter is seemingly fourteen kilometers.
  • "Retrograde" , "Zenith" , "Epicycle" are astronomical terms. In astronomy, the zenith is the point at which something appears directly overhead relative to an object or observer. Epicycle is a former astronomical term which was once used to describe the motions of other planets, relative to Earth, but has since been disproven; however, it still finds use in astrology. It was based on the old "geocentric" belief that the heavens and all objects within it travelled around the Earth. Observers would often note that the planets seemed to slow and change their trajectories in the course of their passage across the night sky, appearing to trace loops in their orbits relative to the stars behind them. This led to the concept of an epicycle : or a smaller rotation of a planet around a barycenter in the course of its larger rotation around the Earth itself. The period in which a planet appeared to slow and descend into a loop, just prior to appearing to move backwards, was known as the declining or descending phase. The period during which the planet traced the bottom half of the loop, appearing to move in the opposite direction from its orbital path is known as the retrograde phase. "Equilibrium" denotes the point at which the planet ceases to move backwards and begins to ascend out of the loop and into its normal orbital path once again, denoting the end of that particular epicycle. This particular astronomical theory was eventually proven to be an optical illusion after Copernicus introduced the then-radical notion that the Earth was not the center of existence & that all planetary bodies within the solar system, including Earth, revolved around the Sun. Johannes Kepler later proved that the so-called "epicycles" were the result of the Earth's orbital position relative to that of the planet being observed.
  • The term "Theta State" refers to a Theta Rhythm , which is an oscillatory pattern of brainwave activity in electroencephalography (EEG). This rhythm occurs within the human brain's hippocampal and neocortical regions at between 4 Hz. and 7 Hz. In both regions, these signals have been associated with transitioning from a dream-state to wakefulness, as well as a state of deep meditation.
  • These terms are drawn from three different fields of science and the exact manner in which they apply to the Traveler's Light output is unclear at this time, save that they are used to indicate a repeating pattern.
  • The Festival of the Lost features a mask of the Traveler that can be obtained by players, and which is worn by the Speaker for the duration of the event. The back of the mask is marked by the tricorn symbol worn by the Speaker and included in Destiny's logo.
  • According to Fenchurch Everis, the inside of the Traveler "smells faintly of vanilla". [33]
  • The pre-Golden Age magazine depicting the Traveler shows it in a damaged state, although it only became damaged during the Collapse, as seen with the Destiny 1 intro and simulations of the past in the Infinite Forest, where it can be seen undamaged in the background.

The Traveller Map

Traveller is a role-playing game set against a background drawn from adventure oriented science fiction.

In the distant future, interstellar travel is as common as international travel is today. The tremendous distances involved in travel between the stars dictate that such voyages take weeks, months, and even years. A situation similar to Earth in the eighteenth century is created, where communication is limited to the speed of travel, and the stage is set for adventure in a grand fashion, with all the trappings of classic science fiction: giant, star-spanning empires (good, evil, or both), huge starfleets, wily interstellar merchants (or pirates, depending on your point of view), complex diplomatic maneuvers, larger-than-life heroes, heroines, and villains.

— The Traveller Book

The Traveller Universe

The Official Traveller Universe (OTU) is the primary setting for various editions of the Traveller game, controlled by Far Future Enterprises (FFE). This is the universe described by publications from GDW, FFE and Mongoose Publishing, and by past licensees such as Digest Group, FASA, Imperium Games and others, The setting includes the Third Imperium, Zhodani Consulate and Solomani Confederation, alien species such as the Aslan, K'kree, Vargr, Hivers and Droyne, and a history from the Ancients through the New Era.

Under the FFE Fair Use Policy , the Traveller Map presents an interactive view into the OTU, making use of official data approved and provided by FFE — as well as apocryphal and unofficial data.

Official and Unofficial Data

The status of a sector's data is called out when the sector is clicked or centered in the map view. Official data has no annotation - this is data supplied by FFE's Traveller 5 Second Survey (T5SS) project. Some data is still In Review and further refinements are expected - corrections and feedback is appreciated. Unreviewed data was officially published data for one of the many prior revisions of Traveller but has not yet been reviewed by the T5SS; it is expected that this data will become official eventually.

In contrast, Apocryphal data was formerly supplied by Traveller licensees but is no longer considered official; all, none, or some elements of this data may be retained when analyzed by the T5SS. Unofficial data was created by the Traveller community, including organizations such as HIWG and individuals. Mixing official and unofficial data within the same map may be concerning to those who want an authoritative, unassailable and pure source of truth. Those who are familiar with the lore of Traveller will recognize that truth is a rare commodity and slippery substance, and often contains contradictions and unsettling gaps. Even the official data is intentionally incomplete, and may contain mistakes, secrets, lies and deliberate omissions.

Tips and Tricks

Search tips.

Use the search field to look up worlds, subsectors, sectors, and regions by name. By default, searches use "prefix" search. So reg will find the Regina system and the Regina subsector, among others.

You can use * and ? as wildcards. * matches zero or more characters, so *ward will find the Spinward Marches sector. ? matches exactly one character, so t?rra will find the Terra system. You can also use character ranges like [8-C] or [89A] .

Specify uwp: to search UWPs. For example, uwp:*-g will find tech level 16 worlds. uwp:B[5-7][6-7][3-9][4-8]?[4-7]-[B-D] will find all starport B, medium size, standard atmosphere, wet, moderate poulation and law-level words with average stellar tech level.

Specify pbg: to search PBG. For example, pbg:??0 will find systems without gas giants.

Specify zone: to search travel zones, using G for "green" or no zone. For example, zone:A will find Amber Zone worlds.

Specify alleg: to search allegiances. For example, alleg:Im* will find Imperial worlds (in any domain).

Specify stellar: to search stellar data. For example, stellar:"M? I*" stellar:D will find red giant stars with white dwarf companions. (The question mark matches any spectral digit, the asterisk finds any luminosity class starting with I, and quotes are needed because of the space between the spectral class and the luminosity class.)

Specify ix: , ex: , or cx: to search T5 Importance, Economic, or Cultural extensions. For example, ix:5 will find worlds with Importance 5, cx:[8-F]??? will find worlds with Heterogeneity 8 or higher.

Specify remark: to search for remarks/codes. For example, remark:Hi will find high-population worlds.

Specify in: to restrict search to workds in a sector. For example, uwp:*-f in:Deneb will find tech level 15 worlds in Deneb sector.

Specify like: to find similar-sounding words. For example, like:caboodle will find Capital.

Specify exact: to find exact matches. For example, exact:sol will find Sol subsector, but not the Solomani Rim sector. You can also surround a word or multiple words in quotes like "Nova Terra" to require an exact match.

Specify world , subsector or sector to restrict searches to just that type of result. For example solo sector will find only the Solomani Rim sector.

Multiple words form an "and" search. For example, sol ri will find the Solomani Rim sector, but not the Sol subsector. c* uwp:*-f will find all worlds starting with C that are tech level 15.

As a special case, searching for sector hex will find a specific world if present, e.g. Vland 1717 or SPIN 1910 .

Keyboard Controls

How it works.

The map page is a Web application built using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The page uses script to request image tiles from the server. As the map is moved, more tiles are fetched from the server, filling in the edges of the map.

The server providing the map tiles is running Microsoft's IIS with a custom image generation service implemented in C# using ASP.NET and GDI+ to render the tiles as bitmaps. Maps can also be generated in PDF format (via PDFsharp ) or SVG for print-quality use.

The full source code to the site - both client and server - is available on GitHub and is released under the Apache open source license .

The map data comes from two sources. The macro-scale data - comprising the governmental borders and rifts is based on classic publications such as the Imperium Map poster released by GDW in the early 1980s. The micro-scale data is derived from sector data in ".sec" format . Official data from the Traveller 5 Second Survey effort is used where available.

Most of the data that allows the site to function is exposed by various APIs over HTTP and can be used by other sites and applications. See the API Documentation for more details.

Design Notes

The aspect ratio of the map follows the Classic Traveller convention of hexagonal parsecs, so parsecs are cos(30°):1 rather than square. This means that the map on this site matches the Classic Traveller resources such as the Imperium Map, maps in the Alien Modules, the Spinward Marches and Solomani Rim modules, and hexagonal subsector maps. Maps that use squares for parsecs, such as the Atlas of the Imperium or MegaTraveller -era publications, may appear distorted in comparison.

When zoomed out to larger scales, the stars are rendered pseudo-randomly rather than trying to display the actual system data. This maintains the appearance of the Imperium Map poster. Rifts are simply left empty. Zooming out further, rifts details from Mike Mikesh from Security Leak fanzine are used, and at extremely large scales the structure of Milky Way galaxy is represented using an illustration by Robert Hurt ( SSC ), JPL-Caltech , NASA , circa 2005.

History and More

This site was inspired by many sources, most prominently some of the treasured posessions from my childhood: the Imperium Map poster which provided an overview of Charted Space in the Classic Traveller era; the Spinward Marches poster included with Deluxe Traveller ; and the Atlas of the Imperium , which provided cursory maps of all sectors of the Third Imperium. In the early 1980's, using these and the classic Alien Modules, I carefully pieced together a map of known space on paper . I also dutifully entered the Sector Generator BASIC program into my Apple II and spent endless hours trying to coax a decent map from a dot-matrix printer .

In early 2005, after a hiatus from Traveller of nearly 20 years, I purchased a copy of the GURPS Traveller rulebook, which includes a map of charted space within the frame of an imaginary computer-based map viewer . I first saw this within weeks of Google Maps appearing, and was inspired to create a functional version of the map viewer using contemporary Web technologies. I was also inspired by the many other online Traveller map resources and desktop applications such as Jim Vassilakos' venerable Galactic .

Starting in 2013, this site began hosting the official data files of the Traveller 5 Second Survey effort, as well as older published data and unofficial fan submissions.

History : [ ]

The Traveler's origins are unknown. When it arrived, humanity first discovered it on Mars . [1] It sparked a Golden Age  of humanity that allowed humans to migrate from Earth to colonize other planets within the Solar System . Some speculate that the Traveler is a large vessel; others believe that it is a sentient being or artificial intelligence and some may even consider it a deity. As of yet its true nature is unknown.

The Traveler is credited with humanity's survival during the Collapse of the Golden Age. After the Traveler sacrificed itself to save humanity, it remained floating not far from the Earth's surface, and became silent and dormant. The Last City was built in its shadow and under its protection, where its inhabitants are temporarily safe from the threat of the Darkness .

The Red War : [ ]

A year following the SIVA Crisis, Dominus Ghaul , leader of the Red Legion , attacked the City and trapped the Traveler inside a special device, cutting off its Light from the Guardians. [2] As the Red Legion occupied the City, they began constructing a cage around the Traveler for the purpose of extracting its Light, which would allow the Cabal to gain powers akin to its Guardians. Ghaul also captured the Speaker to question him about the Traveler's Light, but the Speaker only wasted his time before ultimately admitting that the Traveler never spoke to him.

During Commander Zavala's attack to retake the City, the Guardian came face-to-face with Ghaul aboard his command ship, where he was in the process of absorbing some of the Traveler's Light . Though the Guardian managed to kill Ghaul, he was resurrected as a massive ethereal figure of pure Light. As the Red Legion leader declared his apotheosis and the dawning of a new age, the Traveler began to wake for the first time in centuries; the cage fractured and exploded as The Traveler broke free. The Traveler obliterated the cage and Dominus Ghaul, releasing a pulse of Light that reached throughout the solar system and beyond the entire galaxy. [3]

Season of Arrivals & Beyond Light : [ ]

As the Black Fleet has now returned, alerted and reawoken by the explosive pulse of Light during the Traveler's escape from the Cabal cage, all Guardians were called to convene at the City where the Traveler had begun to heal the damage to itself caused by the Red War. The Traveler appeared to regenerate itself by drawing in energy from all around it, brightening the skies as it reformed. The massive cracks in it's surface have now largely been mended, although some damage from the Collapse remains. Eris Morn commented that the Traveler healing itself would not result in the end of the conflict between itself and the Darkness "Pyramids" that have been threatening the universe; it will merely cause the conflict to escalate. [4] With its strange healing ritual complete, the Traveler unleashed another pulse of Light to push the Darkness back, forcing a temporary stalemate. The Darkness now occupies the edges of our solar system, and multiple human colonies have fallen out of contact and in some cases, vanished altogether.

Rise of the Lucent Hive : [ ]

Following Savathûn 's fatal separation from her worm familiar, she translocated herself to the mountains outside the City, where she addressed the Traveler, remarking that she had chased it for a long time, first as an adversary, then as a collector and now a supplicant. Some time after she expired, for unknown reasons, the Traveler sent a Ghost to resurrect her, thus granting the Hive the Light.

The Guardian's investigations into Savathûn's throne world revealed that the Witch Queen planned to protect the Traveler by sealing it away in her throne world, threatening the Guardians' connection to the Light. Furthermore, when the Guardian discovered the Traveler's involvement with Savathûn's resurrection, the Vanguard questioned why the Traveler's motives, as Zavala furiously reminded that the Traveler once sacrificed itself to save humanity from the Darkness, including the Hive. Ikora Rey declared that regardless of the Traveler's actions, they would stop Savathûn's plan.

As Savathûn's ritual was underway, pulling the Traveler into her throne world, the Guardian exposed more long-lost memories of young Sathona, revealing that the Witness was responsible for tricking the proto-Hive into unleashing the Worm Gods and blame the Traveler for an imminent cataclysm on their homeworld of Fundament . As a result of the Guardian's actions in disrupting the ritual, the Traveler was returned to Earth.

Gameplay : [ ]

The Traveler grants the Guardians the mysterious powers that they wield, through a symbiotic relationship with the Ghosts —personal artificial intelligences housed in small shells, which serve as the companions of Guardians. Ghosts form this connection with a single guardian when they resurrect them for the first time, and after that point a Ghost cannot give it's Light to any other guardian. Ghosts are intelligent, with human-like personalities and unique, personal sets of beliefs, opinions and theories. Strangely, Ghosts seem to posses very little innate knowledge about the Traveler and have been known to debate the finer details of the Light among themselves.

The Ghosts were assumed to be made by the Traveler itself in its dying moments during the First Collapse, although this theory is not actually confirmed by hard evidence. Within the Tower , The Speaker acts as the representative of the Traveler and a sort of spiritual leader for the Guardians, and has always been a Guardian themselves. The most recent Speaker was captured and eventually executed by the Consul aboard Ghaul's flagship during the Red War.

Trivia : [ ]

  • According to Fenchurch Everis , the inside of the Traveler "smells faintly of vanilla." Whether this is true or not is unknown. [5]
  • According to Xur , there is a dark mirror of the Traveler.
  • Calus claims to have known of the Traveler before its arrival to the Solar System.

The Traveler

  • View history

A being who described himself as a Traveler , but whose real name he claimed was unpronounceable by Humans , was a humanoid from a mysterious species , encountered by Starfleet during the 2360s . Reported to be from Tau Alpha C , he himself claimed to be a traveler on a journey to experience "your reality ". He also claimed that while by his understanding he was not from another time, he might be according to Starfleet's understanding of time . ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " Journey's End ")

The Traveler had certain abilities, like the ability to act like "a lens which focuses thought ", which allowed him to alter space , time , and warp fields with the power of his mind. He could phase out of time and dimension and move between planets and starships . These abilities were based on his ability to focus the energy of thoughts and in his advanced understanding of the nature of reality. According to The Traveler, thought was the basis of all reality. In addition, Deanna Troi noted that his presence could not be detected with the empathic abilities of Betazoids . He could also shapeshift to appear as humanoids from other species with different clothing. ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " Journey's End ")

Around 2364 , The Traveler had been trading his understanding of propulsion for passage on Starfleet vessels. This was the first time his species visited this culture. He claimed to be motivated by curiosity, his stated goal being experiencing "your reality." During these travels, he became an assistant to Starfleet propulsion expert Kosinski , who claimed to have discovered a revolutionary new method of warp drive . Although some of his theories did have merit, Kosinski's formulas turned out to be bogus, as Wesley Crusher discovered that it was actually Kosinski's assistant , The Traveler, who was the driving force behind the propulsion method. Things went awry, however, and the USS Enterprise -D was catapulted millions of light years to the galaxy known as M-33 . Later, while attempting to return back to the Milky Way Galaxy , the Enterprise instead traveled to the end of the universe , a billion light years away. The Traveler collapsed in exhaustion and was taken to sickbay , where he revealed the secret of his abilities. He eventually returned to engineering , where he helped return the ship and crew home to the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Traveler noticed something special about the young Wesley Crusher , comparing him to a young Mozart . Inspired in part by this, Captain Picard promoted Wesley to an acting ensign in the traditions of Starfleet. The Traveler played a significant role in the destiny of Wesley Crusher. ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

In 2365 , when the Enterprise encountered a duplicate version of Captain Picard, apparently transported six hours back in time, the contemporary Captain Picard briefly suspected The Traveler as a cause of this anomaly - noting that The Traveler was capable of movement through time using the power of his mind. Commander Riker , perhaps recalling The Traveler's largely benign nature, did not share this suspicion. ( TNG : " Time Squared ")

The Traveler was next encountered by the Enterprise crew in 2367 , after a " warp bubble " experiment by Wesley Crusher went awry and trapped his mother Beverly Crusher in an alternate reality. Due to Wesley's increasing realization of his powers, the Traveler was drawn to him and sensed the predicament. He appeared and directed the crew on her rescue. He needed Wesley's help in opening a doorway to the other reality and had to convince him he had the ability. They succeeded in rescuing the elder Crusher, while the younger Crusher continued his maturation. ( TNG : " Remember Me ")

In 2370 , The Traveler appeared incognito as Lakanta , a villager on Dorvan V , to Wesley Crusher. Lakanta, who seemed to have intimate knowledge of Wesley, directed him to seek the answers to his troubled destiny. Wesley was, at the time, quite uncertain about his future in Starfleet. The Traveler guided Wes to the " habak " where Wesley had a vision of his deceased father telling him that his destiny lay somewhere other than with Starfleet. The cadet heeded the advice and resigned from Starfleet, after which in the middle of a riot he managed to dissociate himself from time; it is then that The Traveler revealed his true identity and promised to mentor the young man on his new journey. ( TNG : " Journey's End ")

In 2024 , Wesley revealed to Kore Soong that he and the Traveler were part of a larger group who had created the Watchers to help ensure the survival of various species throughout time and space. Much like the Traveler had done to Wesley, Wesley extended an invitation for Kore to join them which she accepted. ( PIC : " Farewell ")

The Traveler was played by actor Eric Menyuk .

Menyuk was a finalist for the role of Data , and was given the recurring role of The Traveler as a consolation prize. ( Starlog , December 1988 , Issue 137, p. 54; Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 36); Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 520))

An early draft of " Journey's End " included the revelation that Boothby was, in fact, The Traveler. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 290))

Apocrypha [ ]

According to the Q Continuum series, The Traveler even has a significant reputation among the Q Continuum ; when the female Q learned that Wesley had been chosen by The Traveler, she was almost impressed by this fact.

Description [ ]

Appearance [ ].

When the Traveler appeared to Jester in her room at the Pillow Trove in Zadash , he was hooded in a cloak of deep green. She saw verdant irises in the dark space of his hood. When she was a child, the Traveler occasionally appeared to be a child as well.

Later, the Traveler revealed his true identity: Archfey with exaggerated elven features. Long ears, high cheekbones, and bright green eyes. He was described to have orange-red, mane-like hair. At natural height, he is taller than most of the party, but has been shown to be able to change his size at will. He is often seen grinning.

Personality [ ]

The Traveler finds enjoyment in mischief and pranks, but rarely seeks genuine harm. When Jester masterfully rearranged all the books in a bookstore, he bestowed a sense of approval and amusement upon her. [2] Through Jester, he taught to cause mischief in the world, but always give back and provide balance. [3] According to Jester, the Traveler talks a lot about balance. [4] [5]

Symbol of the Traveler from TCSR - Clara Daly

Symbol of the Traveler, by  Clara from Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn . [art 2]

The Traveler's symbol is an arched doorway over a road that vanishes into the distance. [1] Jester's holy symbol for the Traveler is a door arch and path. [6]

Biography [ ]

Background [ ], " steam and conversation " (2x09) [ ].

Jester confided in the Traveler when she didn't receive a package from her mother at the Pillow Trove . He manifested and reassured her, explaining that Jester's mother was unaware of her location at that moment. [7]

" Harvest Close " (2x17) [ ]

After Jester had successfully defaced and made her getaway from the Hearth of the Allhammer in Zadash [8] , he made his presence known by taking a bite out of the caramel apple she had been eating. [9]

" Lost Treasures " (2x22) [ ]

Located among the many religious artifacts found in the merrow lair , Jester finds two different iterations of the Traveler symbol. Despite having zero knowledge of anyone else worshiping or acknowledging the Traveler, Jester excitedly goes around to show everyone her find. [10]

" Commerce & Chaos " (2x31) [ ]

Jester attempted an elaborate prank on the temple to the Platinum Dragon in Zadash that went off the rails and almost got Jester and Nott thrown in prison. [11] While Jester was resting alone in the inn that night, the Traveler appeared to her. Jester told the Traveler that she did it to get his attention after feeling abandoned when she was kidnapped. The Traveler claimed never to have abandoned her. [12] He asked to look at the dodecahedron , and after examining it, the Traveler told Jester he had never seen anything like it before and she should keep it hidden. [13] The Traveler told her there were others like her but she was his favorite. He told her about a summit of his worshipers happening on the Zenith of Unndilar , and Jester promised to attend. [14]

" A Pirate's Life for Me " (2x41) [ ]

The Traveler appeared to Jester on the Squalleater to compliment her on her usage of Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments. When Jester asked him for advice on wooing Fjord, he noted that there were many enchantments he could teach her. He reiterated the planned summit of his followers, and asked Jester again to attend. [15]

" The Stowaway " (2x45) [ ]

Jester and The Traveler vs the blue dragon by Amy King

Fan art of The Traveler helping Jester block an attack from Thelashas , by Amy King . [art 3]

While fighting a blue dragon , Fjord and Jester both cast Blink on themselves. As a result, Jester could not see Fjord for most of the battle. At one point while he was on the Ethereal Plane , the rest of the party in the lair at the time were also hidden. Jester, badly injured and unable to see anyone else, said "I'm all alone" [16] before attempting an attack on the dragon. The attack missed, but luckily she was able to Blink into the Ethereal Plane.

When Jester reappeared, she was still within range of the dragon and severely hurt even after healing herself. [17] The dragon attacked Jester again. She closed her eyes waiting for the attack to come. She heard the voice of The Traveler in her head say, "Don't worry. I'm watching." She felt a hand push her arm up. Jester's shield deflected the dragon's attack, causing two teeth to break out of its mouth. [18] All of the Mighty Nein and Twiggy eventually managed to escape.

" Duplicity " (2x55) [ ]

Jester cast Revivify on Caduceus after he was accidentally killed in battle. As she placed her hands on Caduceus, the Traveler's hand appeared with Jester's hand and his voice said "I'm proud of you." The spell was successful and Caduceus woke up. [19]

" The Favor " (2x56) [ ]

Beau pointed out to Jester that a house in Asarius had a symbol that looked like the Traveler's on the door. Jester knocked on the door and spoke to Covak , a very old gnoll. Covak told her the Traveler came to him a few years ago and taught him to play pranks. [20] Jester revealed that the Traveler first appeared to her when she was a young girl, appearing in a form close to her own age.

" Causatum " (2x70) [ ]

Feeling lost over Yasha 's defection, Jester reaches out to the Traveler, who appears to her. He reminds her of the upcoming Traveler Con , saying he was thinking of holding it on the Menagerie Coast area island of Rumblecusp. Jester suggests Kravaraad , the volcano in the Greying Wildlands , and he agrees. She tells him that a lot of the world is sad, and he comforts her by reminding her that much of it is beautiful, too, and that she also gets to be happy. He also says there are many gods' eyes on the group, and suggests that the Stormlord is still watching over Yasha.

" A Tangled Web " (2x77) [ ]

As Jester is falling asleep, she is visited by the Traveler, and they decide on Rumblecusp as the location for Traveler Con .

" Between the Lines " (2x78) [ ]

After arriving in Zadash to investigate the attack on the Cobalt Soul, Caleb asks Archivist Zeenoth if he knows anything about a being known as the Traveler. Zeenoth retrieves a book about recent cults which contains brief notes about the Traveler. Zeenoth describes it as a recent phenomenon that was previously thought to be a mass hallucination, but a wide breadth of accounts worries him. He's not sure if the Traveler is a deity, but describes him as seemingly benevolent.

" Bathhouses and Bastions " (2x90) [ ]

Caduceus researched the Traveler at the Rexxentrum Archive of the Cobalt Soul , learning that he is seen as a figure that has begun to show up in rural areas very selectively. All the notes about the Traveler are written in fresh ink and the reports are from the past decade or so. There is worry of the Traveler being some sort of devil masquerading as an entity, a mass hallucination, just a person who is convincing people he is a god, pure heresy, or something much darker. [21] Later, Jester attempted to contact the Traveler to share her ice cream and ask questions about Traveler Con , but he failed to appear, confusing and hurting her. [22]

" Stone to Clay " (2x91) [ ]

Essek Thelyss asks Jester what she is seeking, and she describes Traveler Con and the Traveler, but her pitch is unpersuasive, [23] and after Essek leaves, several other members of the Mighty Nein try to help her with her pitch. Later, Jester confesses to Caleb that the Traveler had not appeared to her when she called earlier, and expresses concern that it might have been because she was not being an effective cleric for him. [24] Shortly afterward, the Traveler appears to Jester and reassures her, saying, "You were my first, and you will always be my favorite." [25]

" Misery Loves Company " (2x93) [ ]

On the way to Mount Mentiri and their encounter with Isharnai , Jester sets up a makeshift altar in an alcove by the side of the path, where she casts Commune to speak to the Traveler. [26] For the first time, the others in the group see a hooded, green-cloaked figure emerging from the stone and protecting Jester from the rain, although they hear only her side of the conversation. Fjord uses his Divine Sense and discovers that although the Traveler is not a celestial, fiend, or undead, there is a "presence" affected by the Hallow spell. [27] Hallow can affect fey and elementals in addition to celestials, fiends, and undead. [28]

" With Great Power... " (2x94) [ ]

At the Whitedawn Lagoon, the Traveler revealed his true identity to Jester, affirming her as his first disciple, and that he needed her counsel in how to proceed with the faith he now leads. [29]

" Blessing in Disguise " (2x95) [ ]

The Traveler revealed himself to the rest of the Mighty Nein, stating that he needed help in figuring out how to handle his new following of people.

" Family Shatters " (2x96) [ ]

Jester made a pendant of the Traveler for Nott and asked her to open her heart to chaos, and consider becoming a follower of the Traveler.

" The Fancy and the Fooled " (2x97) [ ]

The Mighty Nein revealed to Jester's mother that they had seen the Traveler for themselves. Marion became concerned about her daughter's safety, but Fjord assured her that Jester had more control over the situation than one might think. Marion was proud of Jester for not having the Traveler dominate the relationship they have. Marion also mentioned seeing someone similar to Jester's description of Artagan in the lobby of the Lavish Chateau .

" Maritime Mysteries " (2x103) [ ]

After Jester cast Commune , the Traveler confirmed to her that he had known how Vokodo affected people's memories, which made Jester confused and sad. To try to cheer her up, Artagan manipulated the shadows surrounding Catha into a Tusktooth smiley face.

Traveler Con [ ]

" devoutness and dicks " (2x107) [ ].

While the Mighty Nein were planning Traveler Con , the Traveler appeared and they brainstormed how to get him out of the god business. They eventually settled on the idea of convincing his followers that he was actually the Moonweaver in disguise. On the eve of Traveler Con, Jester pulled him aside and he told her how much she's changed him for the better, and how much she's grown. She told him he was her best friend and always will be. He cautioned her that he doesn't expect things to last forever, and they should appreciate the time they have, then wandered off to enjoy the party.

" Traveler Con " (2x108) [ ]

During Traveler Con , Artagan was present though mostly in disguise, and aided Caleb in providing special effects. At its conclusion on the volcano top, he made himself look like the Moonweaver , giving a speech about hiding "her" identity from them and starting a new sect of the religion. Suddenly the clouds parted, revealing a full moon. Jester and Artagan were confused, since the moon wasn't supposed to be in the sky. Gossamer chains rained down and bound Artagan as an angelic figure descended and called for the Traveler to be brought back to the Feywild to be punished. Jester grabbed his legs, begging the angel to forgive him. The chains began rising up from the ground, along with the angel. Fjord used his Relentless Hex to grab Jester, and the Traveler kicked them both off of him. Caleb cast Feather Fall to slow their descent. At that, the angel halted, asking Artagan if he was sorry for what he had done. He was. The chains broke apart sending him into a freefall halted by Veth's Feather Fall . Artagan addressed the crowd, saying they should go worship the Moonweaver, and walked away. He later visited the party as they rested in the dome for the night.

  • Kashaw 's patron Vesh is not technically a god, even though he believes she is. [35] Even so, he is a Life Domain cleric, confirming entities that are not gods may still grant clerics power.
  • In the Dwendalian Empire , "worship outside the approved idolatry is met with imprisonment". [36] The Traveler isn't one of the six approved deities and worshiping him is illegal, though most citizens of the Dwendalian Empire seem unaware of his existence.
  • Jester's drawings are frequently described in a style that is very reminiscent of Garmelie's (another form Artagan takes) preferred art style.
  • Jester's pranks resemble the pranks Garmelie had Vox Machina play as part of his deal when they entered Syngorn .
  • Artagan is commonly linked to the color green and the physical description of the Traveler included green eyes.
  • The Traveler's symbol is that of an open doorway leading to a path, a possible connection to the doorway Vox Machina made for Artagan to cross over with.
  • His name is "The Traveler" implying he traveled from someplace else, potentially the Feywild.
  • The Traveler and Artagan are both powerful mischief-makers.
  • Covak referred to the Traveler as one of the "fair folk", a common term for fey. [37]
  • This was presumably based on a misunderstanding. Travis was reading a character sheet exported from D&D Beyond, which paraphrases Divine Sense: "As an action, you can detect good and evil. Until the end of your next turn, you can sense anything affected by the hallow spell or know the location of any celestial, fiend, undead within 60 ft. that is not behind total cover." This is not exactly the same as the description of Divine Sense in the official rules, which state that Divine Sense can "detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell." [40] But based on Travis's reading from the character sheet, Matt looked up Hallow and presumably saw that fey are among the "things" that are ordinarily affected by the spell.
  • When giving directions to Jester as part of her Commune spell, the Traveler licked his finger before pointing the way, something Garmelie did consistently, despite the Feywild having no wind. [41]
  • Before Campaign 2 started, Laura asked Matt if she could play a character (initially a warlock, later a cleric) whose patron was Artagan; Matt agreed, but his in-game treatment of the Traveler led her to believe he had gone a different direction with the character. [42]
  • In a tweet, Matt confirmed this to be true. [44]
