7 Top Sundarban Tour Operators and Packages

sundarban tour map

There are many Sundarban tour operators that offer different types of package tours to the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal. Most are predefined group tours with fixed itineraries and can either be day tours, overnight, or multiple nights with set accommodations included. You will be picked up from Kolkata and dropped back there and can either stay aboard a boat or on land. Hotels and resorts also provide their guests with tour packages.

Help Tourism Sundarbans Jungle Camp

Help Tourism specializes in purposeful, eco-friendly travel to natural areas in east and northeast India. The organization has its own "resort", the Sundarbans Jungle Camp on Bali Island, and boats for river cruises. The resort was built in partnership with locals to provide them with a livelihood and reduce tiger-human conflict. Its six comfortable, ethnic thatched cottages with modern attached bathrooms are located on the banks of the Bidya river. Locals are all employed in the running of the resort and as guides.

Tour packages of various lengths from two to four nights are available. Expect to pay around 40,000 rupees for a private three-day package for two people. This includes transport from Kolkata, accommodations, all meals, boat cruises, naturalist and local guide, park entrance fees, village experience, and country boat ride. Special birding tours are also possible. Bookings can be made through the Help Tourism website, although unfortunately, it's not very user-friendly.

Tour de Sundarban

Tour de Sundarban (also known as Backpackers) has its own exclusive purpose-built accommodations and boats as well. The solar-powered Eco Village, located on Satjelia island, has 20 mud cottages with attached western bathrooms, hammocks, and a community center for travelers to hang out in. The company was founded by three "brothers" (they are actually an uncle, nephew, and cousin), who were so inspired by a visit to the Sundarbans that they decided to start taking other people on trips there.

Their tours are most suited to energetic, adventurous and sociable people, who are not looking for luxuries—but rather a village feel, fun ambiance, and value for money. The accommodations are rustic and local transport, including ferries and rickshaws, is used (which is all part of having an authentic experience).

Two and three-day packages are offered, as well as day tours. Their rates include transport, accommodation, Bengali food, permits, boat safari, village walk, and evening performances from local musicians. Expect to pay 5,500 rupees per person for two night, three days. There is an option to spend one night on the boat. Tours are usually limited to 15 people. One-day tours are possible for groups of four or more. The cost is 3,000 rupees per person.

Sundarban Chalo

Sundarban Chalo is another tour company, run by a group of four brothers, that provides budget backpacker-style tours to the Sundarbans. The tours are similar to those offered by Tour de Sundarban. The main difference is the accommodations, which are non-exclusive. Guests stay in basic cottages at a "resort" in Pakhiralay on Gosaba Island, near where the main market is. Again, don't expect luxuries or resort-style facilities. The tour includes a sunset at the Sundarban Bird Jungle, local village walk, and visits to Hamilton Bungalow and Rabindranath Tagore Bungalow. Sundarban Chalo also operates a day tour from Kolkata. The price for group tours ranges from 2,800 rupees per person for one day, increasing to 5,300 to 6,800 rupees per person for three days. The company conducts the tours using its own boat, built in 2015.

Sundarban Eco Tourism

Based in Gosaba, at the entrance to Sundarbans National Park, Sundarban Eco Tourism is popular with domestic Indian tourists. The company has been in business since 2015 and offers reasonably priced tour packages ranging from one to three days. The tours depart from Kolkata, and guests can opt to travel either by train (the cheapest way) or car. Expect to pay 2,600 rupees per person for a one-day package by car. A three-day package by car costs 5,000-7,000 rupees per person, depending on the number of jungle safaris. Accommodations are provided in decent budget hotels in Pakhiralay.

Sundarban Houseboat

Inside Sundarban Houseboat

If you'd prefer to stay on a boat rather than on land, and you're looking for a private and personalized tour experience with a touch of luxury, check out Sundarban Houseboat. The unique boat has been specially designed and renovated to provide inviting classy hotel-style accommodations. You won't need to sacrifice comfort to stay on this boat. There are three bedrooms, all with attached western bathrooms, that can accommodate groups of 14 to 25 people in total. Facilities include air conditioning, flat screen TVs in all rooms, living and dining room with sofas, kitchen with gourmet chef, sun deck with loungers, library, games, and movies.

Packages are available for a duration of one to four nights (or more, on request!), visiting various watchtowers, islands, and villages. The boat can be hired exclusively, or on a per room basis. Rates vary according to guest requirements. Book as far in advance as possible because it is popular!

Vivada Sundarban Cruises

Another option for a luxury Sundarban cruise is aboard Vivada's M.V. Paramhamsa. This huge cruiser has four decks with 16 state cabins of 165 square feet and, 10 state cabins of 135 sqaure feet, as well as a sun deck, bar, restaurant, coffee shop, and massage parlor with steam and sauna room. The boat sails to the Sundarbans weekly from Kolkata, with three-night packages available. Day trips and excursions along creeks are organized in a smaller vessel, and there are numerous opportunities for village visits. Cultural programs also take place in the evenings on the boat's sundeck. Rates start from around 50,000 rupees per person for three nights.

West Bengal Tourism

Sharell Cook

Government-owned West Bengal Tourism operates popular one-night and two-night budget cruise packages to the Sundarbans, staying aboard their boats. The organization has two large cruisers, Sarbajaya (the better of the two) and Chitralekha. The one-night tour package includes visits to Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, and Dobanki watchtowers. The two-night package includes an additional visit to Jhingakhali watchtower.

What you need to keep in mind when booking these tours is that the boats can not travel through the more narrow waterways due to their large size. Being restricted to wide waterways means less chance of wildlife sightings. Plus, these are group tours with up to 50 people. Expect to pay around 6,500 rupees per person for two nights.

FAQs on Sundarban Tours

Why sundarban tour in a small group.

  • Because your best chance to spot wildlife on a Sundarban tour is when you go on a tour with a very small group. This will increase your chance to spot wildlife many times.
  • All the traditional tour operators in Bangladesh run tours in Sundarban on a 40-70 people group. Going on a Sundarban tour with a big group like these, people end up seeing very little or no wildlife at all. We organize only small group tours to give you the best experience of Sundarban for your time and money.

Why Sundarban tour in Bangladesh instead of India?

  • 60% of Sundarban is in Bangladesh part which is denser and more diverse with its wildlife, flora, and fauna.
  • You visit a wild forest in Bangladesh, not a national park. Everything you see in Bangladesh part of Sundarban is wild.
  • You spend the full three days inside the forest while doing the Sundarban tour with us in Bangladesh. You can spend just one day inside the forest while doing a Sundarban tour from India.
  • On a Sundarban tour in India, you stay at a hut in a village outside the forest. In Bangladesh, you stay on our comfortable houseboat with a Western-style toilet deep inside the forest, anchoring in different places every day. There will be armed forest rangers on board for security.
  • In India, you visit the forest with an engine boat starting from the village. In Bangladesh, we'll take you to explore the creeks and channels deep inside the forest with a noiseless wooden rowboat. You float on the channels quietly in the tranquil environment and get the best chance to spot wildlife while they do not flee hearing the disturbing noise of the engine.
  • Sundarban Tour with us offers more activities, e.g. walking deep inside the forest, spending time on a beautiful sandy beach at the Bay of Bengal inside the forest while you hardly see any people, watching wildlife from an observation tower overlooking a freshwater pond where animals come to drink, explore creeks and channels with noiseless row-boat to increase your chance to spot wildlife, visit wildlife sanctuaries, and many more.

Why to start Sundarban tour from Mongla instead of Khulna?

  • Because you reach the forest within 15 minutes of starting from Mongla. If you start from Khulna, half of your day is wasted just to reach the forest and another half day to come back. All the traditional tour operators in Bangladesh run their tours from Khulna, while we run our Sundarban Tour from Mongla.

Why doing a day tour in Sundarban is a complete NO?

  • Never do a day tour of Sundarban! You might want to quickly sample Sundarban to save time and money, but it will be a full waste of your time and money as you will end up visiting just an Eco Park and a zoo which will be very disappointing, no matter who you do the tour with! It will be simply a bad taste of the forest. Either do a three days tour or save it for a future trip. There is nothing in between!

Sundarban Deer

sundarban tour map

Sundarban is the natural habitat of the world’s Royal Bengal Tiger and spotted Deer.Deer is very common in the Soundarbans. It is one of the most beautiful dear in the world. They like to live in flock. In a flock there are 10-25 deer live together. Mostly they live in grassy forest. The main enemy of them is Royal Bangle tiger, which is only found in the Sundarban.

Royal Bengal Tiger

sundarban tour map

The Royal Bengal Tiger is our national animal. It is mainly found in Bangladesh and India. It lives in a variety of habitats including grasslands, subtropical and tropical rainforests and mangroves. In Bangladesh and India its main habitat is the Sunderbans Mangrove Forest. Royal Bengal Tiger is also the national animal of India.

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It lies at the mouth of the Ganges and is spread across areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal of India, forming the seaward fringe of the delta. In Bengali “Sundarban” means “beautiful jungle” or “beautiful forest” but the name may have been originated from the Sundari trees that are found in Sundarbans in plenty. Two-thirds of the forest (62%) is in the southwest corner of Bangladesh while the rest is in the West Bengal. To the south of Sundarbans is the Bay of Bengal. Male Tigers sometimes measure more than 3 meters with their tail. Their weight is around 200-220 kilograms. Females are an average of 100-130 kg in weight. Average lifespan of the tigers is around 10-12 years.

In the wild, Bengal Tigers are pure carnivores and hunt medium-sized and large-sized animals, such as wild boar, deer, gaurs and water buffalo. They also prey on smaller animals like hares, monkeys, langurs and peacocks. But the Bengal Tiger is well known for its liking of chital (sambar deer) as its favorite food. The numbers of royal Bengal Tigers have decreased during the last decades because of illegal hunting of these mammals for their skins and certain bones which are thought to have healing powers in traditional Chinese herbal medicine and because of habitat destruction by human population. The actual number of tigers in the Sundarbans part of Bangladesh is unclear but thought to vary between 300 to 400. U.N reports state that on an average 40 tigers are getting killed each year which is extremely high and if not to be stopped now will bring this wonderful animal on the verge of extinction very soon. Sadly, most probably they will survive only in cartoons and animations Surprisingly in the Indian side, although it is only one-third of Sundarbans, the numbers of Bengal Tigers are two to three times higher than Bangladesh part. A large portion of the jungle has been deforested by local people for agricultural purposes. Areas which were deep and inaccessible forest even a decade ago are now turned into human settlements and crop lands The people living in sundarbans are mainly ‘bawalis’ who collect golpata, mouals who collect honey and woodcutters. They make dwellings about 3 to 5 meters high for fear of wild animals including tigers and snakes. Every year a number of people fall pray to tigers, specially by aged tigers who no longer are physically fit enough to run after young prey like sambar deers.

UNESCO- World Heritage Site

Sundarban National Park was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Aims of UNESCO:

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO's programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agenda 2030.

There are several criteria to select a region as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

  • According to Criteria (ix) of UNESCO, Sundarban is an outstanding instance of significant ecological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, estuarine and marine ecosystem and the communities of flora and fauna.
  • Besides this, Criteria (x) of UNESCO indicate that Sundarban is one of the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biodiversity, also containing globally threatened species from the point of view of science and conservation.

Uniqueness:

  • It is the only mangrove posses Royal Bengal Tiger as its habitat.
  • The land area of Sundarban is very dynamic, moulded and shaped by the action of tides with erosion process more prominent along estuaries and deposition of alluvium etc materials along the banks of inner estuarine waterways influenced by the accelerated discharge of silt from sea water.

The role of the region as a wetland nursery for estuarine and marine organisms and a climatic buffer against natural cyclones created in the Bay of Bengal frequently.

Sundarban Tiger Reserve has got a global recognition in big cat conservation in 2021.

About CATS:

  • CATS is a set of criteria which allows tiger sites to check their management, leads to successful tiger conservation.
  • CATS was launched in 2013 as an accreditation tool by the global coalition of Tiger Range Countries (TRC).
  • It has been put into action across 125 sites in 7 Tiger range countries. India accounts for the highest number of 94 sites, of which assessment for 20 Tiger reserves was concluded in 2021.
  • 14 Tiger reserves in India have received accreditation of the global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CATS).

Significance of Conservation of Tigers:

  • Tiger conservation leads to the conservation of forests. Protecting and preserving the Tiger directly helps in protecting the entire ecosystem, including species, flora, and fauna.
  • Development and conservation of Tiger reserves and Tiger corridors are very significant as the environment experts have noted that the condition of several Tiger reserves has deteriorated because of the diversion of land for infrastructure projects.
  • Fragmentation of Tiger reserves and Tiger corridors leads them to move beyond the forested areas for prey. This movement increases the human-Tiger conflict.

Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

Indian Sundarban is designated as a Ramsar Site in 2019.

Sundarban- as Ramsar Site:

  • Sundarban met 4 of the 9 criteria required for the status of ‘Wetland of International Importance’.
  • Presence of rare species and threatened ecological communities, biodiversity, significant and representative fish and fish spawning ground along with migration pathway.
  • It is the 27th Ramsar Site in India with an area coverage of almost 4,23,000 ha.
  • It is also the largest protected wetland of international importance in our country.

Facts about Ramsar Convention:

  • In 1971, the first convention was held at Ramsar city in Iran.
  • The convention on wetlands is an inter-governmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international co-operation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

The Ramsar designation furthers possibilities of international cooperation of the unique wetland ecosystem which amongst other values are critical for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Sundarban Biosphere Reserve was constituted by Government of India in 1989 and it received the recognition of UNESCO under its Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme in November, 2001.

Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an inter-governmental scientific programme, launched in 1971 by UNESCO,

Aims of MAB:

  • To establish a scientific plan of action for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.
  • To promote research activities, environmental education, training and monitoring in the context of local, national and international conservation and sustainable development.

Basic Features of Biosphere Reserve:

  • A biosphere reserve must contain three basic structures, viz. core area, buffer and transition zone between them.
  • Core area must be a bio-geographical unit and should be large enough to sustain viable populations representing all trophic levels.
  • It combines the natural and social sciences with a view to improving local livelihoods and safeguarding natural and managed ecosystems.
  • Promoting innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable.

Conservational View:

  • The conservational perspective of Biosphere reserves depends on managing genetic resources, endemic species, ecosystems, and landscapes.
  • It may prevent man-animal conflict along with the wildlife, culture and customs of local inhabitants.

Note: Currently there are 18 Biosphere Reserves in India.

Indian Largest Mangrove Habitat

Sundarban is the largest mangrove in our country with almost 4000 sq Km area coverage.

Mangrove Ecotone:

  • In the saline environment, low oxygen concentration in soil and daily tidal influx promotes mangrove formation in the coastal ecosystem.
  • Being an ecotone, Sundarban posses a great biodiversity with amazing natural beauty, constitutes over 60% of the country’s total mangrove forest area.

Mangrove- Other than Sundarban:

In India, there are several mangrove forests found in different states, like

i. Bhitarkanika in Odissa; ii. Krishna- Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh; iii. Pichavaram in Tamilnadu, iv. Some costal parts of Maharashtra; v. Goa; vi. Karnataka; vii. Gujarat

The whole area is connected by the waterways only.

Ecological outlook:

This is the land of majestic and endangered Royal Bengal Tigers, fishing cats, estuarine crocodiles, river terrapins, rotifers, planktons, various invertebrates along with several important mangrove plants and serves as the primary defense against ocean- based natural calamities to the entire lower Gangetic plain.

Only Mangrove Ecoregion

Ecosystem of sundarbans, the sundarban is one of the most diverse and productive mangrove ecosystems in the world. the flora, fauna and their interaction are important to sustain a healthy ecosystem. the region is named after a tree, called ‘sundari’. pertinent to note that, the cherished interaction between the biotic and abiotic factors is the key attribute of the largest mangrove..

Ecology is all about the interaction between communities. Both biotic and abiotic components are important to sustain an ecosystem. Sundarban is considered as estuarine mangrove in the Gangetic delta. Sundarbans features two ecoregions - 'Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests and 'Sundarbans mangroves'. The seasonally flooded Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests lie inland from the mangrove forests on the coastal fringe. The forest covers approximately 10,000 km2 of which about 6,000 km2 are in Bangladesh. The Indian part of Sundarbans is estimated to be about 4,110 km2, of which about 1,700 km2 is occupied by water bodies in the forms of rivers and creeks of width varying from a few metres to several kilometres. The Sundarban along the Bay of Bengal has evolved over the millennia through natural deposition of upstream sediments accompanied by intertidal segregation. The physiography is dominated by deltaic formations that include numerous drainage lines associated with surface and subaqueous levees, splays and tidal flats.

Mangrove ecosystem is a very specialised environment occurring in between the terrestrial habitat and the sea in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. Sundarban is the largest delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers in the Bay of Bengal. Tide- dominated funnel-shaped estuary is intersected by mesh-like network of rivers, channels and creeks. The transitional habitat supports a unique variety of plant community, known as ‘mangrove’. The term ‘mangrove’ is derived from a Portuguese word ‘mangue’, which means salt tolerant plants. The Sundarban is one of the prominent examples of mangrove in the world.

Mangrove ecosystem supports a wide assemblage of animal communities. It is the home of many animals which live entirely within the mangrove, several others visit this zone either foraging or to breed. This unique mangrove ecosystem with its numerous ecological niches is home to over 1586 faunal species, among them 15 mammals, 8 species of birds, 17 species of reptiles are included in Schedule I and II( rare & endangered) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act,1972. 14 species have been listed in Appendix I of CITES.

Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched in 1973 by the Government of India. The project aims to safeguard the viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats, protecting them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage forever represented as close as possible the diversity of ecosystems across the distribution of tigers in the country.

  • Reduce those factors which lead to the depletion of tiger habitats and to mitigate them by suitable management.
  • Ensure a viable tiger population for economic, scientific, cultural, aesthetic and ecological values.
  • The project's task force visualize the tiger reserves as breeding nuclei, surplus animals would migrate to adjacent forests.
  • Funds and commitment are mustered to support the intensive program of habitat protection and rehabilitation under the project.
  • The government has also set up a Tiger Protection Force to combat poachers and funded relocation of villagers to minimize human-tiger conflicts.

Monitoring and Research

  • The monitoring system M-STrIPES was developed to assist patrol and protect tiger habitats. It is running successfully with several modifications in the Tiger Reserve.
  • Camera trap method is also exercised in the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. The analysis of the flanks of the tigers are assisted by WII-Dehradun.

sundarban tour map

Ecology is all about the interaction between communities. Both biotic and abiotic components are important to sustain an ecosystem. Sundarban is considered as estuarine mangrove in the Gangetic delta. Sundarbans features two ecoregions -'Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests' and 'Sundarbans mangroves'.

Major abiotic components:

The Sundarban deltaic alluvium is formed out of the silt brought from the Himalayas. The soil is mainly of fine silty clay in northernmost part. Peaty deposits are found in the middle and the swamp area. Sandy clay with sand dunes are seen towards the sea face. The upper layer of the soil is grey to greyish black in colour. The soil of the mangrove delta is less in oxygen content. Humus content is generally high in the mangroves.

Despite its close proximity to the Tropic of Cancer, the extreme climate does not prevail here because of its location nearer to the sea as well as due to tidal flushing of rivers and creeks inside. The mean maximum temperature is 30 degree Celsius (June- July) and mean minimum temperature is 20 degree Celsius ( December- January) which are soothing to people. The average rainfall of the area is about 180 cm. Humidity ranges normally 70-80% in the region.

Due to heavy rain and variable tidal influx, the estuaries of the region have become dynamic. A rhythmic cyclical pattern is noticed in the hydrology of the rivers. Temperature, salinity, pH and turbidity vary according to the horizontal zonation of a river from the sea and freshwater flow due to rain.

Major biotic components:

The Sundarbans Mangroves ecoregion on the coast forms the seaward fringe of the delta and is the world's largest mangrove ecosystem. The dominant mangrove species Heritiera fomes is locally known as Sundari. Mangrove forests are not home to a great variety of plants. They have a thick canopy, and the undergrowth is mostly seedlings of the mangrove trees. Besides the sundari, other tree species in the forest include, keora, hetal, golpata, baine etc.

Not only the flora but also the fauna is very important in Sundarbans. The majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, fishing cat, civet cat, jungle cat, rhesus macaques, otters, palm squirrel, various kinds of birds, saltwater crocodiles along with several species of reptiles, fish, amphibian and entomofauna are bountiful in the mangrove ecoregion. The interaction between the communities of biotic and abiotic factors is very important and very strong in mangrove ecotone. The diversity of both fauna and flora is due to the ‘edge effect’ according to the ecology.

Mangrove formation:

The mangrove formation is observed where the tidal interaction is normal with a constant mixing of sea water and fresh water and the optimal temperature is 20 degree Celsius. The vegetation can be classified as tidal swamp, salt water type mixed forests, brackish type and palm type forests.

Features of the flora:

  • The mangrove species are typically leathery, possess cuticle on the upper surface of the leaves.
  • Cable roots along with stilt roots are seen.
  • Oxygen is deficient in the soil and the trees posses pneumatophores to overcome the situation.
  • Viviparous germination is the unique feature of these halophytes.
  • The leaves of the plants secrete excess salt through special micro-hair like structures throughout the year, have a complex salt- filtration system.

Sundarban is the home of more than 300 species of plants, among them some are true mangroves, namely:

  • Kalo Baine( Avicennia alba )
  • Peara Baine ( Avicennia marina )
  • Jat Baine( Avicennia officinalis )
  • Genwa ( Excoecaria agallocha )
  • Hental ( Phoenix paludosa )
  • Garjan ( Rhizophora apiculata )
  • Bhara ( Rhizophora mucronate )
  • Sundari (Heritiera fomes )
  • Tora ( Aegialitis rotundifolia )
  • Khalsi ( Aegiceras corniculatum )
  • Hargoja ( Acanthus ilicifolius )
  • Kankra( Bruguiera gymnorrhiza )
  • Bakul Kankra( Bruguiera parviflora )
  • Jat Garan ( Ceriops tagal )
  • Jhamti/Jele Garan ( Ceriops decundra ),
  • Chak Keora( Sonneratia caseolaris )
  • Karanja ( Pongamia pinnata )
  • Habli ( Thespesia popul )
  • Manda ( Viscumori entale )
  • Baro Manda ( Dendrophthoe falcate )
  • Kripa ( Lumnitzera racemose )
  • GolPata ( Nypa fruiticans )
  • Son Champa ( Bruguiera cylindrical )
  • Pashur ( Xylocarpus mekongensis )
  • Tak Keora( Sonneratia apetala )
  • Hoya ( Hoya parasitica )
  • Goria ( Kandelia candel )
  • Kalak Kambing ( Finlaysonia obovata )

Besides these, a native pioneer species called Dhani Ghas (Porteresia coarctata) grows in saline estuarine ecosystem. Important to note that, the salinity gradient makes the stratification of trees in the ecotone environment.

Mangrove ecosystem supports a wide assemblage of animal communities. It is the home of many animals which live entirely within the mangrove, several others visit this zone either foraging or to breed.

Conservation Status:

This unique mangrove ecosystem with its numerous ecological niches is home to over 1586 faunal species, among them 15 mammals, 8 species of birds, 17 species of reptiles are included in Schedule I and II( rare & endangered) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act,1972. 14 species have been listed in Appendix I of CITES.

Sundarban is the only mangrove ecosystem in the entire world to harbour tigers. In the food chain, Royal Bengal Tiger is the topmost land based predator in the Sundarban. Tigers in Sundarban have adapted to the saline water and are excellent swimmers and have a variable diet ranging from fish, crabs, and smaller animals to wild boar and cheetal. In the extremely stressed conditions tigers have taken man as an easy target, and often termed as ‘man eaters’.

Gangetic Dolphin, Irrawady Dolphin,Cheetal, Rhesus macaque, Wild boar, Fishing cats, Leopard cats, Small Indian civet , Common otter, Black finless porpoise etc. are also reported from the area.

As per earlier records mammals like Javan Rhino, wild buffalo, barasingha, barking deer and leopards etc were once found in Sundarbans.

Sundarban is rich in avifauna. Recent surveys have revealed the presence of over 300 species of birds. These include a large number of migrants from higher altitudes visit the area especially in the winter months.

Sandpipers, Spoonbills, Whimbrels, Stilts, Thick knees, Curlew, Green shanks etc. are found in the mudflats and sandy shoreline.

White bellied sea eagle, Osprey, Brahminy kite, Shikra, Crested serpent eagle, oriental honey buzzard (occasionally), short toed eagle etc.

Pond herons, Grey heron, Purple heron Night heron etc. Other common species of birds found here are- Cormorants ( little and intermediate), Indian shag, Yellow footed green pigeon, Seagulls, Egrets, Sunbirds, Cuckoos, varieties of ducks, Geese and Storks (especially the Lesser Adjutant stork) etc.

1. The Goliath heron is extremely rare and is seen occasionally.

2. Buffy Fish Owl is another rare but important species found in the region

There are major threats to these species as per conservation ecology.

Sundarban is also called as a "Kingfishers' Paradise " due to presence of 10 species out of the total 12 sp. of kingfishers found in India.

Note: During monsoons a number of heronries are formed where species like egrets, herons and open bills have been found to nest.

Reptiles are also present in good numbers in this region.

The endangered Salt water/Estuarine crocodile is present in good numbers in the numerous rivers and waterways. Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project is assigned to conserve and breeding purposes of them

Apart from crocodiles other reptiles present in abundance are snakes, namely: King cobra, Common cobra, Russell’s viper, Common Krait, Rat snake, Chequered keel back, Green whip snake etc.

Note: Snake bite is a major cause of mortality in Sundarbans.

Water turtles include:

Indian soft-shelled turtle, Spotted pond turtle, Flapshell turtle etc.

Sea turtles include:

Olive ridley, Green sea and Hawksbill turtle.

River terrapin ( Batugar baska ) is another endangered reptilian species found in the area which is endemic to this region.

Remarks: Research and Conservation breeding programme on Batagur baska and Crocodilus porosus is going on successfully at Sajnekhali and Bhagabatpur respectively is the foresighted vision of the forest department.

Amphibians :

The amphibious mud skipper viz. Peripthalmus and Boleopthalmus and various frogs are frequently seen moving around near boat- jetties and mud banks. The creeks and rivers of Sundarban are affluent in icthyofauna, malacofauna and arthropod fauna.

Ganges shark white spotted shovel nosed guitar fish, Pondicherry shark Indian dog shark, Bull shark, Hammer headed shark , Black tip shark , Pale edged sting ray, Black edged sting ray etc.

Hilsa, Bhetki, Pomphret, Parshey, Gurjali, Amude, Ram fita, Churifita, Topshey etc.

Invertebrates:

Among the crustaceans seen are many species of prawns including the tiger prawns which are an important source of revenue as they have a good export market. Another found in the wild- Hermit crabs (Clibnarius spp.), Fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), Red ghost crabs (Ocypod sp.).

Extremely primitive species of trilobites commonly known as Horse shoe crabs which are highly endangered species and regarded as living fossils are also found here.

Research and Conservation Breeding

Research and conservation breeding programme is one of the key components for any biosphere reserve, and sundarban is not an exception. captive breeding of endangered species is necessary in context of conservation. it prevents local extinction of a species or a sub-species. conservation breeding programme along with continuous research and monitoring is running successfully on northern river terrapin and estuarine crocodile under the effective guidance and supervision of sundarban tiger reserve..

sundarban tour map

Batagur baska

River terrapin is one of the important species of estuarine ecosystem, not only it takes green plants but also it takes rotten food items and clear the water, hence it is called ' water vulture'.

sundarban tour map

Saltwater crocodile is one of the important species and the apex predator of estuarine ecosystem, not only it takes fresh fleshy foods but also it takes rotten carcass of the animal and thereby helps to clear the river water.

sundarban tour map

Tigers are at the top of the food chain in terrestrial ecosystem. Sometimes referred to as 'umbrella species', i.e. their conservation also conserve many other species in the same area.

sundarban tour map

  • Plantation of mangrove and associated species,
  • Restoration of mangrove ecosystem; the aim is to support livelihood without destroying the mangrove forests,
  • Conservation of existing mangrove forests; this provides breeding grounds for fisheries and preserving biodiversity,
  • To act as a carbon sink; as mangrove ecosystem absorb more carbon compounds than the other land-based forests.

Target area

Total target area of mangrove plantation was 2500 ha. The work was continuing in collaboration with the district administration. 1725 ha non- forest land was vested revenue land in 10 Blocks. The work was taken up in Convergence mode with MGNREGA. Collection of seedlings and preparation of land was carried out by the local inhabitants.

Species of plantation programme

The plantation is mainly lied on Baine tree, followed by Kankra, Garjan, Keora, Sundari and other mangrove- associated miscellaneous species.

Achievements

It was the achievement that the total number of planting sites were 129 and the total number of man-days generated was 4,01,021in the last annual year.

Collection of honey :

The people collected honey from the forests called 'Mouley' in colloquial language. A lot of people are involved which is in fact departmentally done. Honey and bee wax are the minor forest produce (MFP). The honey gathered from the Khalsi plant is one of the best qualities found in the state.

Season of collection :

They collect totally chemical free crude honey and bee wax every year during the dry seasons (in the months of April-May) from the dense mangrove forests. STR issues permit every year for honey collection.

Banphool Brand Honey :

'Bonphool' - pure Natural Mangrove Honey is collected from mangrove forests of Sundarban.

Association:

It is an initiative supported by Sundarban Biosphere Reserve (Directorate of Forest, Government of West Bengal), West Bengal Cooperative Bank Ltd., Department of Panchayat & Rural Development, Government of West Bengal and WWF-India.

  • 100% Pure Natural Mangrove Honey collected by Maulis of Sundarban from Sundarban Mangrove Forest.
  • It unique from other honey as it is less viscous with strong aroma and flavour of mangrove flower and rich taste.
  • Natural, no added sugar, chemicals and preservatives.
  • The honey is less viscous and looks watery. This is peculiar character of honey collected from mangrove forest. It mixes easily with water. The customer should not worry about its watery nature. It is unadulterated and can be consumed safely. One can cross check with people in Sundarban about its nature.

sundarban tour map

Storage and refinery :

The collected honey is deposited at different go-downs of the Tiger Reserve for storage and subsequent disposal by handling over the same to West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ltd. Average honey collected from Sundarban is near about 30,000 Kg. Sometimes the production exceeds the demands, and honey is wasted. In recent years, the department is majorly concerned with the marketing, packaging and endorse the refined honey in global market, thereby upliftment of the local people and sustainable development goal will be achieved.

The govt of West Bengal is set to launch unique fish tourism in Sundarbans to attract domestic as well as international tourists. More than 200 species of fish are present in the estuarine rivers and creeks. Some critically endangered and vulnerable species are also found in the creeks. The forest dept gives Boat licences (aka BLC) to the fishermen to venture into the creeks and earn their livelihood. Total active BLC in Sundarban is 693 in numbers, under different forest ranges of STR. Important fish like Bhola; Surungi Bhola; Nona Bele; Topse; Jat Amude; Chanda; Gurjali; Rule; Tapa; Kath Koi etc. are collected and served with great delicacy.
