5 Days in New York: The Ultimate New York City Itinerary

Julie Last updated: February 18, 2024 Itinerary , United States 96 Comments

New York City Travel Itinerary

With 5 days in New York City, you can visit the icons of New York…the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Central Park…and also have enough time to explore different neighborhoods, try new foods, and see a Broadway show. We put together this 5 day New York City itinerary to help you have the best experience here.

About this New York City Itinerary

New York City is massive and the list of places to visit is long. We have been visiting New York City on a regular basis for the past 22 years. I went to graduate school in New Jersey and Tim and I would frequently day trip into the city. Since then, we try to visit New York City once a year, simply because we love this city. In fact, we even started and ended our around the world trip right here. To me, New York feels more like home than Baltimore, the city where I was born and raised.

In general, I grouped sites together based on their location in order to save you time walking and using public transportation. This will keep you from spending unnecessary time on the subway and from backtracking through the city.

You can do these days in any order.

The provided walking distances are the amount of walking you will do to get between sites. These do not include the amount of walking you will do inside of museums, art galleries, etc.

I do my best to keep the hours of operation and pricing up to date for each attraction, however, these can change at any time. I recommend getting updated hours and pricing for your dates of travel. The link to the official website is provided for each site.

Table of Contents

New York City Itinerary: Day 1

One World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial, Staten Island Ferry, and SoHo

How to Use This Map: Click the tab in the top left hand corner of the map to view the layers (points of interest, restaurants, and the walking route). You can click the check marks to hide or show layers. If you click the icons on the map, you can get more information about each point of interest.

If you click the star, this map will be added to your Google Maps account. To view it on your phone or computer, open Google Maps, click the menu button, go to “Your Places,” click Maps, and you will see this map on your list.

One World Observatory

One World Trade Center is the seventh tallest building in the world and the tallest building in the western hemisphere. This skyscraper stands next to the footprints of the original World Trade Center buildings that were destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The One World Observatory, which is the observation deck on One World Trade Center, is a great place to take in your first view of New York City. From here, you have awesome views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey. Plus, by being here early in the day, you get to beat the crowds and have a more pleasant experience.

Read about the entire experience and get tips on purchasing tickets in our post:

How to Visit One World Observatory

I recommend buying your tickets online in advance. If you purchase tickets online in advance , you will skip the ticket line but could still wait in line for the elevator to the Observatory. You have the option to pay more money to also skip the elevator to the Observation deck and the elevator back down to the lobby. You can also purchase skip-the-line-tickets through GetYourGuide (a great idea if they are sold out on the official website).

Cost:  tickets start at  $44 Hours: Get updated hours here Getting Here: One World Trade Center is accessed from the World Trade Center station on the E line, the Rector Street Station on Line 1, the Fulton Street on Lines 4 and 5, or the Cortland Street Station on Line R.

9/11 Memorial Plaza

After your visit to the One World Observatory, spend some time at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. The 9/11 Memorial Plaza is an 8-acre park where the World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood. The foundations of the Twin Towers have been converted into reflecting pools and the surrounding area is now a grove of trees.

9 11 Memorial and Oculus

9/11 Memorial Museum

At the 9/11 Memorial Museum, learn about the story of 9/11 through a series of exhibits, artifacts, and interactive technology.

Website: www.911memorial.org Entrance Ticket: Entry tickets can also be purchased through GetYourGuide.

This 2-hour walking tour includes the 9/11 Memorial and Ground Zero, with the option to add on the  9/11 Museum.

The Oculus, also called the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, is a brand new, state-of-the-art train station. It sits right around the corner from the World Trade Center. You know you are in the right spot when you see the brilliantly white, space-aged looking structure.

Oculus 5 Days in New York

The Oculus | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

The Oculus opened in March 2016. It connects the PATH (trains from Newark and Hoboken, New Jersey) to the New York City subway system. It is also a shopping mall and a place to grab a bite to eat.

It’s worth a quick visit and it’s free!

Lunch at Pisillo Italian Panini

Two blocks from the Oculus is a great little Italian sandwich shop. This is popular lunch spot for locals and business people working in the area. These sandwiches are enormous and can be split between two people.

Pisillo Panini

Wall Street

On your way to Battery Park, wander through the Financial District and take a stroll down Wall Street.

Staten Island Ferry

A ride on the Staten Island Ferry is one of New York City’s best free things to do. During this ride, you have great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

The ferry leaves from the Staten Island Ferry terminal, next to Battery Park. Simply get in line and board the next ferry. The ferry is enormous, with multiple decks and inside and outside seating.

I recommend taking a seat outside on the back of the ferry. From this point you can watch Manhattan slowly recede as you approach Staten Island. To your left will be the Statue of Liberty.

Staten Island Ferry View 5 Days in New York

View from the Staten Island Ferry | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Ferries leave every 30 minutes and are more frequent during rush hour. A one-way trip takes about 25 minutes.

You are not permitted to stay on the ferry and ride it round trip. Once you are in Staten Island, exit the ferry, get back in line, and re-board the ferry. We were able to get right back onto the same ferry without having to wait for the next one (on a Monday morning in February).

The entire round trip ride takes about one hour.

Get the full details about the Staten Island ferry on the official website .

Spend the afternoon in SoHo

SoHo is a neighborhood in Manhattan that is home to art galleries, trendy shops, and restaurants. It gets its name from its location “South of Houston Street.”

Spend the afternoon wandering and shopping here.

To get to SoHo from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal using the subway, walk to the Whitehall Street Station. Take the R line four stations uptown to Prince Street.

For dinner, we highly recommend Piccola Cucina Osteria. This tiny restaurant serves traditional Sicilian food. We have eaten in Little Italy many times but this restaurant is so much better than any place in Little Italy. The food is amazing. It’s a small place so I recommend making a reservation in advance .

SOHO

5 Days in New York dinner

For dessert, you have two options in the area. Just across the street from Piccola Cucina Osteria is Dominique Ansel Bakery . This bakery has unique desserts…how about trying a cookie baked in the shape of a cup and filled with milk? Yum!

One block from Piccola Cucina Osteria is Black Tap , a restaurant that is legendary for its gigantic milkshakes topped with cookies, brownies, and even slices of pie. If you want to take a cool food photo on Instagram during your trip to NYC, this is a good place to put on your list. Expect to wait in line for at least 30 minutes.

New York City Itinerary: Day 2

Art Museums, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square

Take Your Pick from Four Art Museums

There are a bunch of fabulous art museums in Manhattan. Spend the morning in the one that sounds the most interesting to you.

The Museum of Modern Art

The Modern Museum of Art (MoMA) has one of the world’s best collections of art from the 18th century to today. See The Starry Night by Van Gogh, The Persistence of Memory by Dali, and works of art by Matisse, Monet, and Picasso.

Hours: Sunday through Friday 10:30 am to 5:30 pm; Saturday 10:30 am to 7 pm Cost: Adults $28, under 16 years old are free Website: www.moma.org

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Met is enormous. It’s so big that you can measure the size of this museum in acres (13 acres!!). Come see one of the best collections of ancient art from all around the world.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Hours: Get updated hours on the official website Cost: Adults $30, children under 12 are free Website: www.metmuseum.org

The Guggenheim Museum

This is another modern art museum. The building, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is also a work of modern art.

Cost: Adults $30, children under 12 are free Hours: Get updated hours on the official website Website: www.guggenheim.org Pay What You Wish: from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on select Saturdays you can “pay what you wish” to enter the museum, cash only. The suggested admission is $10. Tickets: Tickets can be purchased on the official website.

The Frick Collection

See world-class art by Vermeer, Renoir, and Rembrandt in a beautifully designed residence.

IMPORTANT:  The Frick Collection is currently closed for a renovation project. The works of art were relocated to a temporary location, called the Frick Madison, which is in the Marcel Breuer-designed modernist building at 945 Madison Avenue. Learn more  here.

Cost: Adults $22, children under 10 are not permitted Hours: Thursday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm; closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Pay What You Wish: pay what you wish on Thursdays 4 pm to 6 pm Website: www.frick.org

Where you choose to have lunch depends upon the art museum you visit. If you chose the MoMA, here are two recommendations:

Patsy’s Italian Restaurant: This family-owned restaurant has been in business since 1944. Frank Sinatra made this place famous and many other celebrities have dined here, including Ben Stiller, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, James Gandolfini, and many more. I recommend the Eggplant Parmesan (it was the best I ever had!).

The Black Tap: This restaurant serves craft burgers and beer but it’s famous for its over-the-top milkshakes topped with brownies, cookies, and slices of cake and pie (mentioned under Day 1 as a dessert destination near SoHo).

If you picked one of the other art museums, explore the area around the museum for lunch spots.

Central Park

Central Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Therefore a visit to New York City would not be complete without at least a quick stroll through part of the park.

Central Park is much more than a tourist destination. For New Yorkers, this is a treasured green space, a spot to lie out in the sun, go for a run, and take the kids to the playground.

Spend part of the afternoon exploring Central Park. You can simply wander through it on your own two feet, rent bikes and cycle a lap or two through the entire park, or do something very touristy and go for a horse and carriage ride. There are numerous places to rent bikes just outside of the park. We have the best luck one block south of the park around 5th and 6th avenue. You can also rent bikes in advance here.

The Mall Central Park

Central Park in mid April

Central Park in mid-April | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Notable spots to visit in Central Park are the Imagine Mosaic at Strawberry Fields, Bow Bridge (one of the most photographed locations in the park), Belvedere Castle, Sheep Meadow, and The Mall.

Explore Midtown Manhattan

For the rest of the afternoon, stroll through midtown Manhattan. From Central Park, pop into The Plaza, one of the most famous hotels in the world. Then stroll down Fifth Avenue until you get to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck or SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

Today, take your pick between two observation decks: Top of the Rock and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. Of the two, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is our favorite. You get one of the best views of Manhattan and it is a very unique experience, with the mirrored rooms and immersive art installations. Top of the Rock is also very nice, but it doesn’t beat the view from SUMMIT. For photos of both, check out our Guide to NYC’s Observation Decks.

If you choose Top of the Rock, the best time to visit it is now, since it is located on top of Rockefeller Center. If you choose SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, plan your visit for the end of the day, when you are near Grand Central Terminal. Time your visit an hour before sunset for the best experience.

From Top of the Rock, you get a great view of New York City from Midtown Manhattan. To the north you see Central Park, Harlem, and the Bronx. To the south, you not only get to see the Empire State Building, but you also get to see the towering skyscrapers of the financial district (and One World Trade Center) off in the distance.

Top of the Rock View

View from Top of the Rock in February 2018, before One Vanderbilt was constructed.

While in the area, you can also take a tour of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall . Just note, if you do choose to take a tour, you will have to skip most of the activities planned this afternoon.

Times Square

From Rockefeller Center, it’s just a five-minute walk to iconic, crowded, chaotic, touristy Times Square.

Times Square New York City itinerary

Times Square | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

This is one of the most famous intersections in the world. Every New Year’s Eve, thousands people gather to watch the ball drop, making this the most famous place in the world to welcome in the New Year. During the other 364 days of the year, Times Square is almost as crowded, as street performers put on shows and visitors from around the world gawk at the millions of lights that adorn the neon billboards.

It seems like Times Square is always changing. Every year, there are bigger and better billboards, new stores designed to draw visitors in, and crazier street performers on the streets. It is a crowded, overwhelming place and not everyone enjoys this experience. Take as long (or as little) as you like in this dazzling, gaudy place.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: If this is your first time in New York City, it’s worth seeing Times Square in the daytime and at nighttime. It really is neat to see all lit up at night.

New York Public Library and Grand Central Station

There are just a few more spots to visit on this very busy afternoon. From Times Square, walk to Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. The library is free and it is worth a quick visit. It’s a beautiful building on the inside and has been featured in popular movies such as “Ghostbusters,” “The Day after Tomorrow,” and “Sex and the City.”

Rose Reading Room

Rose Reading Room the the NYC Public Library

A few blocks from the library is Grand Central Terminal. This is the largest train station in the world, with 44 train platforms. The Main Concourse is a gorgeous spot to visit. Walk up the steps to the Apple Store and watch the show as hundreds of people crisscross the Main Concourse.

Grand Central Station

Grand Central Terminal | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Inside of Grand Central Terminal is the Grand Central Market. This is a small market but it is a great place to put together a meal. With fresh fruits, pastas, cheese, and wine, you have the option to assemble a picnic dinner here.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

One Vanderbilt is the fourth tallest building in Manhattan. On the top three levels of One Vanderbilt is SUMMIT, New York City’s newest observation deck. The views are spectacular but SUMMIT One Vanderbilt takes the experience to a whole different level. On these three floors is a state-of-the-art, fully immersive experience with art installations, mirrored rooms, glass sky boxes, and a glass elevator.

Summit One Vanderbilt Photo

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Tickets start at $42 and a visit here typically lasts 2 hours. In my opinion, the best time to visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is an hour before sunset.

End the day with dinner and drinks. If you like the idea of Japanese food, consider going to Momosan Ramen & Sake, just a few blocks from Grand Central Terminal and One Vanderbilt.

New York City Itinerary: Day 3

The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Tenement Museum & a Food Tour

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

If it’s your first time in New York, the Statue of Liberty is a must see. You can visit just the Statue of Liberty or you can visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island together as a round trip excursion from Manhattan.

Statue of Liberty 5 Days in New York

Statue of Liberty | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

At the Statue of Liberty, you can climb the base of the statue or go all of the way to the crown. Both of these options require advance tickets, and they do sell out, so make sure you book your tickets well in advance.

Ellis Island was an immigrant inspection station and approximately 12 million immigrants were processed here between 1905 and 1954.

Ellis Island New York City itinerary

Ellis Island | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Liberty Island (the location of the Statue of Liberty) and Ellis Island are connected by ferry with Battery Park (on Manhattan).

The entire visit, from Battery Park to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and then back to Battery Park, takes about 4 to 6 hours. You will take a ferry from Battery Park to Liberty Island. After seeing the Statue of Liberty, catch the next ferry to Ellis Island and tour this island. Then take a ferry back to Battery Park.

PRO TRAVEL TIP:   Tickets tend to sell out in advance. As soon as you know your travel dates, consider booking your Statue of Libery tickets.

Cost: $24.80 adults, $12.30 children 4 – 12 years for the Crown Reserve Ticket Hours: Ferries depart from Battery Park from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Website: Book your tickets in advance on www.statuecruises.com

You can also join one of these guided tours of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Tenement Museum

Now that you learned about what it was like to be an immigrant arriving in the United States, continue the experience with a visit to the Tenement Museum. Located on the Lower East Side, learn about what it was like to live as an immigrant between the 19th and 21st centuries.

Numerous tours are offered. Visit the Tenement Museum website for full details.

To get to the Tenement Museum from Battery Park, walk to the Broad Street station and take line J uptown four stations to Delancey St/Essex St (8 minutes).

Take a Food Tour in Manhattan

Little Italy and Chinatown are places that are frequently listed in guidebooks. For years, we loved spending an afternoon wandering through Chinatown or dining at a restaurant in Little Italy. However, in recent years, things have changed. Now, most of the restaurants in Little Italy are mediocre, overpriced restaurants that are well worth skipping. On our most recent visit to New York, Tim and I stopped into one of these restaurants for a drink and even the wine was mediocre.

Little Italy 5 Days in New York

Little Italy | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

If you are curious about Little Italy and Chinatown, they are still worth a quick visit. But you should know that there are much better places in New York for quality Italian and Chinese food.

A better way to spend the afternoon is to take a food tour in Manhattan. This 2-hour walking food tour of Hell’s Kitchen gets rave reviews. If you like the idea of combining a walking tour with a food tour of Greenwich Village, I recommend taking a look at this tour. Finally, on this 3-hour food tour on the Lower East Side you will sample German, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, and Jewish dishes and hear stories about the immigrants who settled here.

NIGHTLIFE IN MANHATTAN:   If you want to go out for drinks, we recommend Death & Company. This speak-easy bar serves amazing craft cocktails. They also sell several cocktail books. We love Cocktail Codex (it’s an essential cocktail book if you like to make mixed drinks). Their book called Death & Company: Modern Classic Cocktails also gets stellar reviews, but the recipes call for very specific liquors and infusions, and you would have to have a very well-stock bar to make many of these drinks.

New York City Itinerary: Day 4

Brooklyn is becoming one of New York City’s hot spots to visit. With historic neighborhoods, a fabulous food scene, and some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, this is a great place to add to your New York City itinerary.

Since Brooklyn is so large, it’s impossible to visit all of it in just one day. With just one day you can visit the neighborhood of Williamsburg and the areas along the East River. Think of today as a mini food tour combined with some of the best views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Manhattan Skyline 5 Days in New York

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge

The day starts in Williamsburg, a wonderful neighborhood with boutique shops, a variety of restaurants, and the Brooklyn Brewery. Then, take a ferry on the East River to Dumbo and the Brooklyn Bridge. From here, enjoy one of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, dine on the best pizza in the city, and end with a walk over the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Get the full details in our article: One Perfect Day in Brooklyn

PRO TRAVEL TIP: This Brooklyn day trip works best on a Saturday or Sunday. Both Brooklyn Bowl and the Brooklyn Brewery open midday on the weekend, versus 6 pm during the weekdays. Plus, midtown Manhattan and the popular touristy sites in New York can be very crowded on the weekends, so Brooklyn makes a nice escape from the crowds.

New York City Itinerary: Day 5

Empire State Building, Chelsea Market, the High Line & Hudson Yards

Empire State Building

Start the day with a trip up the Empire State Building. Completed in 1931, this was the tallest building in the world for 40 years until the North Tower of the World Trade Center was completed in 1970. The Empire State Building has been featured in over 250 TV shows and movies and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Empire State Building View

Looking north from the Empire State Building (June 2021).

View of Manhattan

Looking south from the Empire State Building.

If you don’t mind waking up early, you can watch the sunrise from the top of the Empire State Building. Tickets are limited to 100 visitors and need to be purchased in advance. It’s pricey, costing $100 per person, and tickets are only available for Friday and Saturday mornings.

Cost: standard tickets start at $44 for adults and $38 for children Hours: Vary be season. Get updated hours on the official website. Website: Get the full details on packages and VIP experiences on the official Empire State Building website . Get Your Guide: You can also purchase your entrance tickets in advance through GetYourGuide.

Chelsea Market

From the Empire State Building, visit Chelsea Market for lunch.

The Chelsea Market is food paradise!! This is one of our favorite places in Manhattan for lunch. Inside of the market are numerous small restaurants selling food from around the world. Our favorite restaurants are Los Tacos No. 1, the Lobster Place, and Takumi Taco. There are also a number of boutique shops if you like to go shopping.

Chelsea Market New York City Itinerary

Los Tacos No 1 5 Days in New York City itinerary

How to Get to Chelsea Market from the Empire State Building: From the Empire State Building, it is a 3-minute walk to the 34 St – Herald Square Subway Station. Take the D train (orange) towards Coney Island. At W 4 St – Washington Square, transfer to E train (blue) towards Jamaica Center. Exit at 14 St/8 Ave and walk one block to Chelsea Market. This takes 16 minutes. Or, take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft.

Optional: 9/11 Museum Workshop

One block away from Chelsea Market is the Ground Zero Museum Workshop. This museum documents what life was like for the workers and firefighters at Ground Zero during the recovery effort. Filled with artifacts and photographs, this is a great museum to visit if you want to learn more about what it was like to be at the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attack. This is one of the most underrated museums in New York City and well worth your time.

9 11 Museum Workshop

9/11 Museum Workshop | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Cost: Adults $32, children 4 – 12 years old $25 Hours: Hours vary by day of the week; closed Sudnay, Monday and Tuesday; get hours on the official website Website: Learn more about the museum here.

Optional: Greenwich Village

Spend an hour or two in Greenwich Village. Greenwich Village was the location of the 60’s counterculture movements and the modern LGBT movement. Now, the “bohemian days” are long gone, due to rising housing costs and gentrification of the neighborhood, but this is still a wonderful spot to visit.

To get the most out of your visit, this walking tour of Greenwich Village sounds amazing. Learn where Jimi Hendrix and Edgar Allen Poe hung out, where one of Bob Dylan’s album covers was photographed, and the rise of gay rights in New York City.

The High Line

Mid-afternoon, walk the High Line to Hudson Yards. This is a public park and elevated walking path that was built on a historic freight line.

High Line

The High Line | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

It’s free to visit and one of Manhattan’s prettiest walks. The High Line starts near the Whitney Museum, but you can also get onto the High Line from Chelsea Market.

It takes about 30 minutes to walk from Chelsea Market to Hudson Yards.

Hudson Yards, the Vessel, & the Edge

Spend the rest of the day in the ultra-modern Hudson Yards.

What was once a storage yard and jumble of train tracks has evolved into Manhattan’s newest ultra-modern neighborhood.

The trains and their tracks are still here, but this small city has been built on a state-of-the-art platform that is elevated above the railroad tracks. Glass-plated skyscrapers, a shopping mall, a performing arts theater, and two of Manhattan’s very popular attractions, the Vessel and the Edge, can all be found here.

Only the ground level of the Vessel can be visited.

The Vessel

The Vessel | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

LEARN MORE: How to Visit the Vessel

In 2020, The Edge joined the growing number of observation decks in Manhattan. Hovering 100 floors above the city streets, this sky deck offers jaw-dropping views over Manhattan. Adding to the thrill is the glass floor, where you can peer down to the city streets far below.

New York City Itinerary

The Edge | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

The best time to visit the Edge is at sunset. These tickets sell out in advance, so make your reservations once you know your dates of travel. If you can’t get sunset tickets, you can arrive mid to late afternoon and stick around for sunset. I also recommend checking GetYourGuide, because they are an authorized ticket seller for Hudson Yards and they might have availability for your date and time.

There is also a new experience. Called City Climb, you wear a harness, climb up along the edge of the skyscraper, and view New York City from the highest observation deck in the city. This takes two hours and ends with a visit to the Edge. We did this in November 2021 and it is awesome! It’s definitely the most thrilling view of Manhattan. For more information and photos, click the link below to read our Guide to the Edge and City Climb.

Note: City Climb ends with a visit to the Edge sky deck. The City Climb experience takes 2 hours. If you book one of the last tours of the day, you can end with sunset views from the Edge.

Cost: Tickets start at $36 for the Edge. There is an additional $10 to $20 fee for sunset tickets. For City Climb, tickets start at $185. Hours: 8 am to midnight Getting Here: From the Vessel, enter The Shops at Hudson Yards, which sit right next to the Vessel. Take the elevator to the 4th floor and follow signs to the Edge.

LEARN MORE: Complete Guide to the Edge & City Climb

If you want to have dinner in Hudson Yards, Peak restaurant at the Edge is pricey but the views of Manhattan are spectacular. For the best experience, make a reservation in advance and request a table with a view of the city skyline. We recently had a great lunch at Mercado Little Spain . Estiatorio Milos (Greek food) is one of our favorite restaurants in Manhattan.

For more suggestions of places to visit in Chelsea, read our article Best Things to Do in Chelsea & Hudson Yards.

More Ideas for How to Spend Your Time

Seeing a show on Broadway is a quintessential New York experience. You can book your tickets in advance, or buy them the same day through TKTS in Times Square.

Watch a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, visit Luna Park at Coney Island, take a cruise of New York Harbor, fly over Manhattan in a helicopter, or even run in the New York City Marathon.

For a full list of things to do, check out our New York City Bucket List: 50 Best Things to Do in New York.

Using the Subway

To get around New York City, we recommend using the Subway. The New York City Subway is functional but it is dirty, smelly, and in great need of renovation work. It may not be pretty but it will get you where you need to go cheaply and efficiently.

New York Subway 5 Days in New York City itinerary

I recommend downloading the NYC Subway app on your smartphone (it’s free!). This is the app I use to find routes between destinations.

I also recommend purchasing a 7 Day Unlimited Ride Metrocard . It costs $33 and you can ride the subway an unlimited number of times in seven days (there is not a 5 day unlimited ride Metrocard). It costs $2.75 per ride on the metro. If you ride the metro 12 or more times (which you will do on this itinerary) the card pays for itself.

Hello Julie,

Your website is wonderful and has already provided several ideas for our upcoming trip. My family and I, all adults, are headed to NYC in December and have 3 full days. Would you suggest any “must do/see” during that time? Otherwise I am planning on modifying your 5 day itinerary with a few Holiday caveats. I’m also concerned about the weather. We’re from Portland, OR and use to rain but not frigid conditions. Thanks for any advice!

Hello Jon. Definitely see the Rockefeller tree. Kara has seen the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and thought it was just OK (she was 16 at the time). NYC has a very festive vibe that time of year. The weather could be hit or miss, meaning it could be quite cool but it also be relatively mild. As far as big things to see in NYC outside of the Christmas holiday festivities, I think visiting at least one observation deck for a view over the city is a very nice thing to do, seeing Times Square and the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and exploring a neighborhood like Chelsea, Greenwich, or Soho. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, thanks for the detailed itinerary, it’s really useful in our NY planning. In an earlier comment, you mention a link to a comparison site for all the different city passes. We cannot find it. Would you please post it here? Thanks Rachel

That website went down, as far as I know, so I had to remove the link, because it no longer worked. There are multiple passes and what they cover is always changing. It’s too much for me to keep up with, but you could do a Google search for recommended passes in NYC and hopefully that will get you the info you need. Cheers, Julie

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art the tickets are no longer valid for 3 days, sadly.

That is a shame. Thank you for letting us know!

First visit to NYC from Scotland and getting completely confused re the NYC Pass and the NY Pass, etc. Is there any one you would recommend?

Hello Susan. No, we haven’t used the passes ourselves (we take the train up for a day or two and just do a few things). In this article I give a link to a website that seems to do a good job explaining them and would be more accurate than what I know, without doing a lot of research myself. Cheers, Julie

Hi what app is best to download for NY subway and buses? There are many to choose from in App Store… Thanks!

I use the NYC Subway app. The symbol has a black background, with a white subway car in a red circle. Cheers, Julie

I enjoyed reading through your five-day itinerary…, and had hoped to replicate each of its activities by following it on our trip (4 Adults in April 2024) – our planning is only allowing six nights with four full days in NYC – staying near times square. Can you suggest how we should adjust the five-day itinerary to provide the best NYC experience in the 4 days we have available.

Yes, you could combine days 2 and 3 together. Start with the Statue of Liberty in the morning. In the afternoon, visit one of the art museums listed on day 2, take a stroll through the southern end of Central Park, and then visit Top of the Rock or SUMMIT. See Times Square that evening before heading back to your hotel. Cheers, Julie

Is there a printable itinerary? I’m afraid once we arrive my phone will die and we will be lost the rest of the day.

We don’t have a printable pdf available. You can print it out ahead of time, using your browser, but unfortunately it will be a lot of paper. Cheers, Julie

We will be arriving on a cruise and only have one day in NYC, October 27, 2023. There are 3 couples with varied experiences there (one couple has been there several times and one couple has only been there once for half a day). What would you recommend for such a limited time that would satisfy all of us?

For first timers, the essential things to do are the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, a view from an observation deck, and maybe the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. You could start the day with the Statue of Liberty, take a taxi or ride the subway to the 9/11 Memorial Plaza, with the option to visit the One World Observatory. Have a quick lunch and then spend the second half of the day following the afternoon of day 2 of this itinerary, which includes Times Square, Central Park, midtown Manhattan and you could do one of the observation decks listed for that day or do the Empire State Building. If that’s too repetitive for some in your group, you could skip the repetitive parts and add in an art museum, Chelsea Market, the Highline, or some time in SoHo or Greenwich Village. Cheers, Julie

Hi! Which is best entrance to Central Park to get to Mall. Thank you

You can enter Central Park around 65th street (from the east or west), and as you approach the center of the park, you will be at the bottom of The Mall and can walk north along it until you get to Bethesda Terrace. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie! We’re going on a couples trip to NYC and are wondering which 9/11 museum you recommend more: the 9/11 memorial museum or the 9/11 museum workshop. We’ve already been to ground zero, just never inside the museum down there.

I really liked the experience at the workshop. It’s tiny but to see the artifacts and be able to talk to Gary Marlon Suson about his experience was eye opening. If you have already been to Ground Zero with no plans to go back that way, the workshop may work better with your itinerary. It’s easy to combine with Chelsea Market and the nearby Whitney Museum or Rubin Institute of Art. Cheers, Julie

Insider Weekend Getaway from NYC in Spring: Baltimore!

220202170451001_Baltimore_Maryland

Baltimore is the capital of the US state of Maryland with a long and important history. It is somewhat comparable to Boston and yet it has its own charm.

During my roadtrip along the east coast of the USA, Baltimore landed on my itinerary for the first time. Due to its location by the ocean, it has its very own charm and is especially interesting for those who already know Boston and Washington. From New York you can reach Baltimore in about 3 hours. In terms of time, it makes no difference whether you travel by rental car or train.

Things to do in Spring in Baltimore on your day trip from New York

  • Do a craft-beer brewery tour or whiskey tasting tour (Baltimore is famous for both!)
  • Enjoy beautiful river views at the Inner Harbor …
  • … or from high above when visiting Top of the World Observation Level
  • Take photos of Historic Ships in Baltimore

Places To See

You Can Still Save on Spring Break

Depending on where you live, the annual ritual is approaching fast, but with some strategy, there are still deals to be had.

spring break trip to nyc

By Victoria M. Walker

Spring break varies depending on where you’re located — in New York, it’s in mid-April , in San Francisco, it’s late March — but the season is widely considered to be the first major travel period of the year, according to the U.S. Travel Association, a national industry group.

As coronavirus restrictions are lifted across the country and globally, travelers are hitting the road and the skies again — some for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

More than half of Americans plan to travel this spring, according to the vacation management firm Vacasa — and 37 percent say they plan to travel during the spring break season.

But they will find a changed — and pricier — travel landscape out there.

Travelers still in the planning phase or looking for trips at the last minute should be prepared for full flights and pricier hotels, especially in the most popular destinations. Data from the travel booking website Hopper shows the average daily car rental rate has topped $80; the national average for gas is now $4.25 a gallon, according to figures from AAA , the automobile owners group. The average hotel was $166, for the week ending March 19 according to Hopper data — up more than $30 from the same period in 2021. And domestic airline tickets are averaging $448, a 50 percent increase from mid-January, according to figures from TripActions, a travel management company. So what’s a traveler who has her heart set on spring break to do?

Experts say the deals are still out there, but that they require creativity and flexibility on the part of the traveler. Some spring breakers may have to settle for the next-best hotel or an alternate travel destination — or put off traveling until the summer months.

Here are some strategies to help you get away affordably.

Be flexible

Experts recommend potential spring breakers looking for lower fares consider alternate destinations near their number one choice. Indeed, travelers seem to already be putting that advice into practice. Miami, for instance, is typically a trendy destination for spring break travelers. Still, Craig Ewer, a Google spokesman who studies travel trends, says high prices — hotels in the city are averaging $318 per night this month, according to Trivago — are prompting travelers to look elsewhere.

Google data found that Miami didn’t even rank among the top five Google searches for international and domestic air travel and hotels between December 2021 and March. That indicates travelers are looking for alternative — and cheaper — destinations. But the Sunshine State remains popular: The most popular destinations by search included three Florida destinations — Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Key West — and Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, and Nassau, in the Bahamas. (Miami Beach on Monday declared a state of emergency and put the area of South Beach on a curfew after two shootings left five people wounded. The curfew, which lasts from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. through March 28, applies to part of the popular South Beach area with bars and restaurants.)

If Miami or Orlando is off the list for now because of high prices, travelers may want to search farther afield. In Central America, consider affordable alternatives like San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, which has been growing in popularity in recent years, and which showed a 37 percent decrease in airfare from 2021 to 2022, or Panama City, Panama, which showed an 11 percent decrease, according to a Hopper report from January.

Or you could wait: “If your heart is truly set on somewhere sunny,” Mr. Ewer said, “It may be worth postponing your trip a couple of weeks.”

That sort of patience can be helpful for spring break travelers thinking about Hawaii, which as of March 26 is dropping its “Safe Travels Hawaii” coronavirus restrictions, which had been some of the strictest in the United States. The state is anticipating a surge of spring break travelers, many of whom will likely take advantage of lower fares and shorter flight times from West Coast states like California and Washington.

“We are absolutely seeing indications that folks on the West Coast are increasingly interested in traveling to Hawaii,” Mr. Ewer said. But, he said, prices are higher than typical for travel to the islands. Mr. Ewer said travelers with flexibility should avoid Hawaii for now and travel to the state in late April or May when prices are projected to be lower.

52 Places for a Changed World

The 2022 list highlights places around the globe where travelers can be part of the solution.

Rethink the car rental

When Kara Harms, 30, a San Francisco-based lifestyle blogger, started looking at spring break travel plans, she was stunned by the high prices and low availability of rental cars in her desired destinations.

“Car rental prices are insanely high this spring, and there are fewer car options to begin with,” Ms. Harms wrote in an email. The cheapest option she found was almost $200 a day. Car rental companies infamously sold portions of their fleets during the worst of the pandemic, which led to shortages when travel rebounded. Experts say this is why some travelers are still having trouble locating a rental ahead of their vacations.

Ms. Harms settled on an April trip to Vail, Colo., and Austin, Texas, but said she rearranged her itinerary to avoid renting a vehicle for her vacation. “After the sticker shock of car rentals, we opted to shorten our trip by a day and limit our activities to in-town to avoid having to rent a car,” she said. But even that hasn’t solved all of her problems.

“While in Austin, my group wants to do an overnight trip to the nearby Texas Hill Country for wine tastings,” Ms. Harms said. “I’m in charge of booking a hotel, but my top five choices have been fully booked.”

Scott Keyes, the founder of the travel deals website Scott’s Cheap Flights , recommends would-be spring break travelers looking for car rental deals lock in refundable reservations now and set a calendar reminder to check prices daily and cancel if prices go down in the future.

“The more time you give yourself, there’s more time for car rental rates to drop,” Mr. Keyes said.

Pay with points

Travel experts say the window for booking the cheapest air travel for spring break has already passed. Data from Hopper shows domestic flight prices — averaging $324 as of March 16 — are already higher than the same period in 2019.

That means travelers may want to consider alternate methods to book spring break travel, especially at the last minute. Travelers who have amassed points by using their credit cards during the pandemic may want to use points they have earned or airline miles they have been holding onto. However, keep in mind that many loyalty programs use dynamic award pricing, including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, and rates are typically higher closer to departure. That means travelers may do better sticking with loyalty programs that still utilize fixed award charts, like Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan or Hyatt’s World of Hyatt. (While Hyatt still utilizes an award chart , the chain is also moving to peak and off-peak pricing where the price of an award stay can vary based on date and demand.)

Most travelers know that many of the cheapest airfares paid with cash have an advanced purchase requirement. That means travelers need to book the ticket a certain number of days before the flight’s departure. One of the most common is a 21-day advanced purchase requirement — which, if you’re planning to travel over spring break, means you’d need to have booked your ticket by mid-March to score the cheapest fare for mid-April travel.

“If you wait until day 20 before your trip to book your flights, that cheapest fare bucket is no longer available,” said Mr. Keyes.

Take the train or bus

Travelers finding flights expensive or rental cars sparse may want to consider train or bus travel: Amtrak offers up to 30 percent off on its popular Acela route for tickets booked at least 14 days in advance. Acela operates between Washington and Boston, and includes stops in cities like Baltimore, New York and Providence.

Finally, intercity buses are an economical option and some bus companies are rethinking the passenger bus experience.

The start-up bus company The Jet, which offers service between Washington and New York — a route already inundated with cheap bus fares from companies like Greyhound and Megabus — aims to recreate the feel of an airplane on a coach bus. The bus carries a maximum of 14 passengers and includes complimentary beer and wine and an on-bus attendant. Tickets start at $99 one-way, for great museums and attractions in both cities. For travelers looking for free, outdoor activities, Washington’s Cherry Blossom trees just hit their peak bloom.

Expert tips to book cheap spring break travel now

Going.com founder Scott Keyes explains the so-called "Goldilocks window."

While snow and frigid temps are sweeping parts of the country, travel deals for spring break are heating up.

Experts like Going.com founder Scott Keyes explained to "Good Morning America" why now may be the best time to book flights for spring travel.

Spring break travel tips: Book flights before March

"I would not be putting it off much longer if you're hoping to fly somewhere, because chances are once March rolls around, spring break flights are going to get more expensive, not less," he cautioned. "Right now we are in the Goldilocks window for cheap spring break flights."

The so-called "Goldilocks window", Keyes said, is the ideal time to book your flight -- it's not too early or too late for the price to be just right.

"If you book 11 months in advance, you don't see many cheap flights, but also, if you wait until a week or two before, your likelihood of a cheap flight at that point is gonna be very low," he explained.

Spring break travel tips: Find the cheapest destination

When it comes to booking trips for the family, Keyes said to be flexible with your destination.

For example, if a beach getaway is at the top of your vacation list, look for the one with cheapest airfare, and for bigger families, Keyes suggests booking the tickets individually.

"When you do one booking of four tickets, all four tickets have to have the same price, and if there's only 3 tickets left at the cheapest price they're gonna sell you the next most expensive one," he said. "Instead, book three tickets at once at the cheapest price -- then book the fourth ticket."

Spring break travel tips: Round trip vs. one-way flights

Keyes also advises travelers looking to book for spring break to compare round-trip and one-way fares.

"The cheapest non-stop flight from New York to San Diego for a week in late April is $448 per person round trip. But if you book each leg separately, you can fly one-way to San Diego for $139 and back to New York for $254 -- totaling $393. That's a savings of $55 per person.

Expert's top travel tip for booking flights: Follow the 21-day rule

Keyes reminded travelers to follow his golden rule of air travel, back-timing when to book based on your departure date, in order to align with an airline's "advanced purchase requirement" found in the fine print of the fare terms and conditions.

"Pull up a calendar and circle 21 days before your travel date," he said. "That needs to be your sort of drop-dead date to get your flights booked by."

Other deals and thinking ahead to summer travel

It's also a great time to book a cruise, now that we're in what's known as the wave season -- the first three months of the year when cruise lines often offer a wide range of discounts.

AAA shows discounts between 30% to 60% off, and travelers will likely see cabin upgrades, as well as buy one, get one offers and possible onboard credits.

While most searchers are in spring break mode, experts also say now is a good time to start thinking about summer travel.

If you're looking for domestic vacations, plan to try to book them one to three months out from the travel dates, while we are still in the opposite season.

Finally, remember to turn on flight alerts via Google flights or a price tracker app.

Road Tripping: 6 Spring Break Getaways from NYC

spring break trip to nyc

Some miles on the clock, a dash of history, a pinch of the outdoors, time for fun and more than a handful of snacks and you’ve cooked up a recipe for the perfect spring break road trip. While bundling everyone in the car for forced family fun can feel like a schlep, GPS makes the deal a lot sweeter and the benefits include memories in the bank, family photo ops and even a shot at youthful spontaneity. Read on for inspiration to fuel your itinerary.

Washington D. C.

You’ll get more than a dash of history in D. C.. With so much to see, you’ll have to edit your options rather find things to fill your time. (Don’t carry snacks for the crew if you plan on visiting the Capitol Building or Smithsonian Museums  or you risk having to throw them all away. No food is allowed inside the buildings.)Tours of the monuments and views of the White House will keep little feet busy and when they’re tired, hop on the dollar-ride  circulator buses  to take in the landmarks you missed.

For more than a pop of color, plan ahead and get passes to Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors  at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The show runs until the middle of May and celebrates the 65 year career of the Japanese artist.  In D. C. it’s easy to find family-friendly eats, downtown favorites include  Commissary D. C. and Matchbox . Break up the return journey and stretch your legs at one of the six areas of Gunpowder State Park  just outside Baltimore, Maryland. The park is full of multi-use trails and historic sites along the Gunpowder River.

Philadelphia

With so much public art in Philly , there will be no shortage of photo ops. A stroll up Benjamin Franklin Parkway (named after the city’s most famous founding father) from City Hall to the Philadelphia Museum of Art features nearly 30 sculptures.  There’s also the historic sites to visit like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

Plan your trip mid-April and you can be one of the first visitors to the new Museum of The American Revolution  just steps from Independence Hall. If the troops need a culture break, try the  Please Touch Museum , which entertains little ones with interactive exhibits, the  Adventure Aquarium in nearby Camden, with the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast or the  Philadelphia Zoo . No trip would be complete without a Philly Cheese Steak and there are plenty of options. For a pit-stop on your journey, check out the  Monmouth Battlefield State Park in New Jersey. Trails and hikes set the scene for the Revolutionary Wars – and perhaps keep sibling civil wars from breaking out in the back seat.

Cooperstown

For baseball fans, the pilgrimage to Cooperstown is a no-brainer. Home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum , fans can feast on jerseys, bats, balls and gloves as well as the room full of plaques celebrating the game’s most skilled players. Don't forget to explore Time Out Philly's roundup of things to do with kids, including the Philadelphia Magic Gardens and the unusual Mutter Museum of medical mysteries. When little tummies start to growl, grab a quick bite at the aquarium's marketplace. Afterward, get your hands dirty, hop on fun rides and learn about nature’s many plants, flowers and critters at the nearby Camden Children’s Garden  Continue the maritime theme by hopping aboard Battleship New Jersey .

Bannerman's Castle on island in Hudson River in Fishkill, New York

Located in New York's Hudson Valley, around 60 miles north of Manhattan, Beacon has transformed in the past two decades from a sleepy industrial town to a thriving arts community, making it the getaway of choice for relaxation-seeking city dwellers. Here, visitors can spend weekends (or a daytrip) perusing vintage shops and flea markets, kayaking along the Hudson River, and exploring Beacon's scenic hiking trails.

The first stop on your itinerary should be Dia Beacon, a renowned contemporary art museum housed in a former Nabisco box-printing factory. One of the largest contemporary art galleries in the country, Dia's robust collection of work spans from the 1960s to the present. From here, take a stroll down Main Street. Lined with doughnut shops, cafes and art galleries, Beacon's main drag features hidden gems such as Hudson Beach Glass and the Towne Crier Cafe, a popular restaurant and live music venue. While there is plenty to do and see in Beacon, you can't leave without touring the ruins of Bannerman Castle. Situated on Pollepel Island and reachable by boat from late April to October, this Scottish-style castle was once a storage site for surplus military equipment and ammunition.

Not only is this quiet refuge less than two hours by car from Manhattan, but travelers can easily hop on the train to reach this destination as well: Take the Metro-North Railroad from New York City to Beacon for less than $50 round trip. There are also plenty of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from cozy bed-and-breakfasts to unique digs like The Roundhouse, an abandoned factory complex-turned-stylish boutique hotel.

Philadelphia buildings around Philadelphia City Hall

Ditch the Big Apple and head about 95 miles southwest to the City of Brotherly Love. Known best for being the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia is an ideal weekend getaway for families and history buffs. Brush up on your founding fathers trivia on a walking tour of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center before strolling through Rittenhouse Square Park. From there, set your sights on the city's must-see museums: The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation and The Franklin Institute are all good places to explore.

Philadelphia is also notorious for its substantial culinary prowess . Sure, the cheesesteaks are a must-try – stop in a shop like Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies to see for yourself what all the hype is about – but this city has a diverse food scene. If you have time to spare, check out the lengthy list of vendors in Reading Terminal Market, where you can sample everything from Dutch to Thai to Cajun fare.

With limited parking available in the city, it's best to stick with public transportation. New York City travelers can ride the Amtrak from Moynihan Train Hall to the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in less than two hours. Once here, opt for lodging in Center City, where you'll find an array of coffee shops, posh restaurants and historic sites within walking distance of your hotel . Travelers particularly favor The Rittenhouse for its elegant accommodations and first-rate service.

Fire Island Lighthouse at sunset

This secluded barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island is about 65 miles east of Manhattan and a popular getaway for New Yorkers – for good reason. Travelers will find an unspoiled island free of high-rise buildings and the vexing sounds of traffic, all within a few hours of the city. In fact, Fire Island is a car-free environment, making it the ideal choice for city dwellers in need of a short weekend escape. Here, visitors can enjoy activities like sailing, biking, clamming and bird-watching. Just keep in mind that Memorial Day to Labor Day is considered the busy season, so schedule your vacation outside of these dates if you want to avoid crowds.

Because you can't drive onto the island, the best way to get here is by taking the Long Island Rail Road to Sayville, Patchogue or Bayshore. These destinations have marinas that offer ferry service to and from Fire Island for a fee. When it comes to lodging, Fire Island's options are mostly small inns and hotels, but they fill up quickly, so book in advance to ensure you'll have accommodations. If you'd rather rough it, campgrounds are available within the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, at Smith Point County Park and at Watch Hill. Keep in mind, backcountry camping permits and daily campsite fees (typically starting at $25 per day) may be required for select areas.

East Hampton beach and lifeguard chair

Arriving in the Hamptons, it's easy to see why this seaside destination on eastern Long Island's South Fork has established such a name for itself. White sand beaches, untouched nature preserves and plenty of bars serving up frozen cocktails are just a few of the alluring images that may come to mind when you imagine an escape to the Hamptons. Luckily for New Yorkers, this little slice of heaven sits less than 100 miles east of Manhattan, making it easily accessible for weekend getaways and daytrips .

Lay down your towel on East Hampton's Main Beach or Southampton's Coopers Beach, then cast a fishing line from the shore of Montauk Point State Park. For a dose of culture, check out the Hamptons' illustrious art scene: The Parrish Art Museum and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center (open seasonally) are two of the area's most prominent museums. When it's time to turn in for the night, save some coin by choosing a hotel in nearby Riverhead or by camping on the beach.

Kaaterskill Waterfall in upstate New York

For nature lovers, this mountain range in southeastern New York is the perfect place to reconnect with the great outdoors. Home of the famous 1969 Woodstock music festival, the Catskills have been inspiring travelers for decades. Spend the weekend hiking the region's popular trails (the Kaaterskill Falls trail features the tallest waterfall in New York state), or get out on Alder Lake in a kayak. In winter, head here to see Hunter Mountain blanketed in snow and to take advantage of top-notch skiing and tubing opportunities.

In addition to outdoor activities such as hiking, fly-fishing, biking and zip lining, the Catskills are a haven for artists. Follow the Hudson River School Art Trail to witness firsthand the vistas that inspired artists like Thomas Cole. Meanwhile, music lovers and history buffs won't want to miss a visit to The Museum at Bethel Woods, a museum showcasing artifacts and stories from Woodstock. Before calling it a night at one of the region's fabulous hotels or resorts , stop by a microbrewery for a flight.

After soaking up some rays at the beach (the Cove Beach is a traveler favorite), hit up the retailers at Washington Street Mall. Filled with small boutiques, ice cream shops and bookstores, this outdoor mall spans three blocks and is perfect for easygoing strolls.

Other can't-miss activities in Cape May include climbing the Cape May Lighthouse, watching the sun go down at Sunset Beach, embarking on a sightseeing cruise and taking a guided tour of the Emlen Physick Estate – Cape May's only Victorian-era house museum. Cape May offers a plethora of lodging options for weekend trips ranging from quaint B&Bs to hotels set in ornate Victorian mansions. Book a room in historic Congress Hall or The Southern Mansion for charming guest rooms and convenient amenities.

Boats in Mystic, Connecticut

The quintessential New England town of Mystic is situated around 130 miles northeast of New York City and considered one of the top things to do in Connecticut . This seaside village has everything you'd want from a weekend getaway: museums, galleries, delicious eateries and historic landmarks. Head to Williams Beach Park for a quiet day by the water, then stroll through Mystic's historic downtown. Colonial-era sea captain's homes line the streets here, and there are countless places to dine and shop.

Families will also love the Mystic Aquarium for its educational exhibits and interactive habitats. Meanwhile, the Mystic Seaport Museum is a maritime museum that offers several activities for kids, including hands-on exhibits and a zoo garden. Just don't leave without snapping a photo of the iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge, a 1922 drawbridge that connects the Groton and Stonington sides of Mystic. When you're ready to retire for the evening, Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa receives rave reviews for its comfortable rooms and ample business amenities.

Four hours or less

Autumn foliage in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts

This rural region in western Massachusetts (about 150 miles north of Manhattan) has all the makings of a fairytale getaway with plenty of things to do . Picturesque mountain ranges, winding roads and idyllic towns are synonymous with the Berkshires, making this destination the perfect place to escape the hubbub of New York City. Bring your partner along to enjoy a romantic weekend filled with antique shopping, museum tours and scenic car rides through the region's lush countryside.

For breathtaking mountain panoramas, strap on your hiking boots and head to the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, culture hounds won't want to miss a chance to tour the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and The Clark Art Institute. In summer, catch a dance performance at the prestigious Jacob's Pillow or listen to live music on the lawn of Tanglewood, an extravagant music venue and summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Accommodations in the Berkshires run the gamut from B&Bs to luxurious hotels and resorts. Many past travelers say Canyon Ranch Lenox , while pricey, is worth the splurge for its wellness-focused amenities and indulgent spa treatments.

Sign at Shelter Island, New York

Only accessible by ferry, this hidden oasis between New York's North Fork and South Fork is perfect for a quick weekend escape from the city. You won't find rowdy nightlife or luxurious accommodations here, but that only adds to its appeal. In fact, nearly a third of the island is made up of the Mashomack Preserve, a protected habitat with 11 miles of coastline and more than 2,350 acres of tidal creeks, freshwater marshes, fields and woodlands. The preserve is also a major hub for bird-watching: More than 200 species of birds call this area home, although it is specifically known for its large population of nesting osprey.

Elsewhere on the island, visitors can lounge on Wades Beach, a family-friendly stretch of sand featuring lifeguards and a comfort station, or enjoy water sports at Shell Beach. Shelter Island is a premier spot for kayaking: The seasonally open Kayak Shelter Island offers single and double kayaks, along with paddleboard rentals. While the island has golf courses, boutique shopping and courts for petanque (a French game similar to bocce ball), undoubtedly the best thing to do here is nothing at all.

To get here, start by taking the Long Island Rail Road commuter train to Greenport, then board the North Ferry to Shelter Island. Alternatively, you can get here by driving to Sag Harbor and then loading your car onto the South Ferry. For lodging, Shelter Island offers a handful of small hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs.

Downtown, you'll also find a variety of shops, restaurants and art galleries to keep you occupied for hours, plus little ones will enjoy the Adirondack Carousel, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Saranac Lake is also a popular winter destination thanks to its plethora of outdoor sports (think: snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing) and traditional winter activities such as the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which takes place every February. The event also features a fireworks display and multiple parades. When it comes to lodging, visitors will mostly find cozy cabins and B&Bs here, but a handful of luxury hotels are available as well. For the ultimate in comfort, book your stay at Hotel Saranac, a historic property with modern amenities.

Pink skies over the Tidal Basin and Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., while the yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom

Famous for its slew of historic landmarks, monuments and museums (many of which are free to enter), Washington, D.C., has long appealed to historians and politicos. However, there's more to the nation's capital than meets the eye. With more than 20 neighborhoods to explore and innumerable things to do , Washington is a treasure chest waiting to be unlocked. Find killer nightlife and impeccable dining in the Shaw and U Street area, upscale shopping in Georgetown, charming 19th-century row houses in Dupont Circle, and a bevy of historic attractions on Capitol Hill.

If you're only visiting for the weekend, expect an action-packed schedule. Start by hitting up one of the city's first-rate museums: The National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Gallery of Art are a few traveler favorites. Then, take a stroll along the Tidal Basin (you can also get out on the water by renting a paddleboat) or relax on the lawn of the National Mall. Here, you'll have easy access to attractions like the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and its Reflecting Pool, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol. Note, though, that while many of D.C.'s attractions are free, some museums may require timed-entry passes to be reserved ahead of time, so plan as far in advance as possible.

Located roughly 225 miles southwest of NYC, Washington is an easy drive by car or bus. However, the best way to get here is by train. Take Amtrak's high-speed Acela or Northeast Regional train to Union Station and shed up to 90 minutes off your travel time. Plus, because Washington frequently plays host to celebrities, politicians and business tycoons, there are plenty of top-notch accommodations to choose from once you arrive. For a luxurious stay, book a room at The Jefferson , a sophisticated property with European flair plus a restaurant and a cocktail bar on-site. An added bonus? The Jefferson is located only a mile away from the National Mall, so you'll be right where the action is.

Boston buildings in the evening

Bordering Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, New England's largest city sits 215 miles northeast of New York City; travelers can opt to travel here by car, bus or train. Whether you're drawn here by the cobblestone streets, the historic landmarks or the city's strong baseball roots (a visit to Fenway Park for a game or behind-the-scenes tour can't be missed), Boston has all the ingredients you need for a memorable weekend getaway – just remember to pack your walking shoes .

After you've successfully trekked the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail (or hop-on, hop-off bus tour) to some of Boston's most famed attractions – including the Paul Revere House, Old North Church and Faneuil Hall Marketplace – find a shady spot to rest in Boston Common or the Boston Public Garden. For a dose of culture, check out the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which features landscaped gardens and an extensive collection of European, Asian and American art. When you've tired yourself out from a day of sightseeing, hang up your coat in one of Boston's premier hotels . Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street, Boston and the Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf are two of the city's top properties, both offering a lengthy list of amenities and plush accommodations.

Sunset over Canadice Lake in New York

New York's Finger Lakes – a collection of 11 lakes that includes the popular shorelines of Seneca Lake, Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake – are revered for their spectacular water sports opportunities, scenic state parks and top-notch wine. As one of the chief wine regions in the country and the largest wine-producing area in the state of New York, the Finger Lakes region has earned its reputation as a top destination for romantic weekend getaways.

For short stays in the Finger Lakes, following the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the best way to see a lot of local wineries in a little amount of time. With nearly 30 wineries and several restaurants set along the route, the trail is perfect for leisurely car rides in the countryside (just be sure to assign a designated driver ahead of time). Opt for a refreshing riesling, the region's signature wine, or expand your palate on a tasting tour.

Meanwhile, nature lovers should head to Robert H. Treman State Park or Watkins Glen State Park for a chance to see breathtaking waterfalls. If you're looking for a small-town atmosphere with local shops and museums, you can't go wrong with Skaneateles Lake. Here, you'll also find a variety of charming B&Bs and inns like the Mirbeau Inn & Spa , a traveler favorite. Other top lodging options in the Finger Lakes region include the Inns of Aurora and The Statler Hotel at Cornell University , both of which offer easy access to Cayuga Lake.

A quick flight

Niagara Falls in daylight

If you're willing to hop on a short flight (or take a bus tour), you can enjoy a weekend marveling at one of the most beautiful and impressive natural wonders of the world: Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is less than a two-hour flight from New York City – and, while this powerful waterfall is sure to take your breath away, it isn't the only reason to plan a weekend getaway to the area. With beautiful botanical gardens, wineries and casinos, this famous tourist town has everything you need for a fun-filled weekend away. Take advantage of both the American and Canadian sides of the Niagara River by bringing your passport with you.

For a classic Niagara Falls experience, don a poncho and board the Maid of the Mist boat tour. This famed attraction is one of the best ways to see the falls up close, but it's impossible to guarantee you won't get wet. If you'd rather view the falls from a drier and less crowded vantage point, head to the observation deck of the Skylon Tower. Thrill-seekers can also experience the falls on Journey Behind the Falls, which takes participants directly behind the thunderous waterfall, or on an exhilarating jet boat tour. When it's time to turn in, visitors on the American side of the falls can book their stay at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , while Ontario-based guests spend a cozy night in the well-appointed Harbour House Hotel .

What you need to know about travel warnings for popular destinations | 7 On Your Side

Nina Pineda Image

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The combination of a long weekend with Presidents Day on Monday and many schools being on winter break are leading people to travel.

Spring break is also on the way, making it a busy time to hit the beach or travel somewhere warmer.

One thing to consider before you book, the U.S. is out with travel warnings for several popular destinations.

The State Department uses a color code for their advisory levels.

RELATED | US issues travel advisory for Jamaica, Bahamas due to increased crime: What to know

For perspective: The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic are all at a level 2 and Jamaica is at a level 3.

7 On Your Side contacted the State Department and was told crime information for places like Jamaica remains unchanged from previous years -- only health information was recently updated.

So before you dash your dreams of white sand beaches because of headlines on government travel advisories, it's important to be aware of what's behind the rankings.

Travel Expert Katy Nastro globetrots for Going.com , and she says take the advisories with a grain of salt -- the vast majority of tourists are safe under the Do Not Travel red zones.

"Regardless of where you're going, you should always be a smart traveler, doing things like looking at Google maps, getting your bearing, so you're not nose-in-phone drawing attention to yourself," Nastro said.

Some important tips to follow include:

-Avoid walking or driving at night

-Do not display signs of wealth like jewelry

-Avoid secluded places or situations

-Do not physically resist any robbery attempt

-Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile

If you do get cold feet and want to cancel or change travel plans, first call your carrier, contact your hotel or the booking site.

Ask for a refund, request a change fee waiver, request an extension of travel credit/voucher and rebook at an alternate destination.

Many hotels like the Iberostar with three properties in Montego Bay are relaxing refund policies and offering free rebookings at sister properties in Cancun or Punta Cana, while also assuring its resorts have enhanced security measures to ensure safe stays for all guests.

Remember that government advisories don't qualify you for cancellation refunds.

For that you need insurance and to cancel for any reason is pricey -- up to 10% of your total trip cost or more depending on your age and trip length -- but It will give you increased coverage.

With any policy, read the fine print before paying.

19 Best Weekend Getaways From NYC

New Yorkers don't need to travel far to travel well.

spring break trip to nyc

There are countless ways to spend a weekend in New York City, but sometimes, you just need to escape the grind. The best weekend getaways will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to get back to the hustle and bustle after a few blissful days away.

Fortunately for New Yorkers, an escape from the Big Apple is never more than a few hours away. Whether you envision yourself as a total beach bum or want to walk in the footsteps of America's founding fathers, there are perfect weekend trips from NYC for every type of traveler.

Check out craft breweries in Vermont, watch the famed WaterFire display in Providence, Rhode Island, or make your way to the beach on the Jersey Shore with these weekend getaways from NYC.

1. Long Beach Island, New Jersey: 2-Hour Drive

This barrier island just off the coast of southern New Jersey is a place where life comes to a standstill in the best way possible. Stretching for 20 stunning miles, Long Beach Island is the spot to be for city dwellers looking to get away, bask in the sun, or go on a little sightseeing adventure.

On the island, visitors can climb 217 steps to the top of the Barnegat Lighthouse , also known as "Old Barney," to take in views of Barnegat Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, or they can shop for coastal-inspired kitchenware and swimsuit coverups in Viking Village , where old fishing shacks have been lovingly converted into cafés and boutiques.

For those traveling in a pack, there's Pinky Shrimp's Seafood Company , where you and your entire crew can gather for the "fried family feast" of shrimp, scallops, crab cakes, and more. Another stellar dining option is Mud City Crab House , located just across the causeway in Manahawkin, where guests can order oysters on the half shell and enjoy a cold drink around the outdoor fire pits. Both restaurants are closed during winter.

As for where to lay your head at night, try booking a stay at Hotel LBI , a luxury hotel boasting 102 well-appointed rooms, fine dining establishments, and a rooftop terrace where you can watch the sunset with a glass of champagne in hand.

2. Boston: 4-Hour Drive

Violet Smirnova/Travel + Leisure

If you're into history, look no further than a long weekend away in Boston.

Spend time walking along the famed Freedom Trail to trace the city's history as it weaves through several of Boston's most charming neighborhoods. Stop into places like Old North Church , the Old State House (site of the Boston Massacre), and the Paul Revere House to get a taste of what life here was like around the time of our nation's birth. (Pro tip: try to plan your trip around The Head Of The Charles Regatta , which draws thousands of spectators each year to watch elite rowers compete in the three-day race.)

As a major city, Boston has no shortage of excellent hotel options, including the Omni Parker House , the oldest continuously operating hotel in the country. Its own history runs deep and counts both Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh as ex-employees, and writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as former guests.

For an even more upscale stay, book a night at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street, Boston . Centrally located in Back Bay, it's a prime spot to post up for a weekend, and its concierge team can curate experiences to help you make the most of your time. It also comes with all the amenities one would ever need, including complimentary Birria bikes, three restaurants, a spa, and a swimming pool with floor-to-ceiling views of the city. For New Yorkers who don't drive or don't want to drive, Amtrak's Acela service takes you from Manhattan to Boston in four hours.

3. Burlington, Vermont: 5.5-Hour Drive

With breweries dotted all around this small city, Burlington, Vermont is a beer lover's paradise. Make sure to sign up with City Brew Tours for a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the best beers coming out of the Queen City are made. True brew enthusiasts should try to plan their visit around the Vermont Brewers Festival , held every July.

Beyond beer, Burlington also boasts a lively waterfront scene. Head to Waterfront Park on Lake Champlain for a stroll or cycle along the eight-mile Burlington Greenway. Hop off your bike for a quick visit to ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain , an interactive science museum dedicated to the health of the lake, or rent a boat from the Community Sailing Center to get on the water yourself.

For a luxurious getaway, stay at the Essex Resort & Spa . Nestled on 18 verdant acres just outside the city, this charming hotel has two swimming pools, a spa, and hands-on cooking classes taught by chefs from the resort’s farm-to-table restaurant.

4. The Adirondacks, New York: 4-to-5-Hour Drive

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

When the city becomes too much, it's time to head upstate — to the Adirondack Mountains, specifically.

A weekend in the Adirondacks typically means hiking, kayaking, cliff diving, and for the more adventurous, white water rafting (best experienced in the spring, when the Hudson River is at its most intense). Writer Lauren Breedlove described her outdoorsy experience in the Adirondacks for Travel + Leisure : "We couldn't get enough of the canoes, going on morning and evening expeditions, keeping an eye out for possible moose, and uncovering art in nature as we paddled through an area with heart-shaped lily pads."

For a unique stay, reserve a room at The Point , a former Rockefeller family retreat overlooking Saranac Lake. Be sure to book early, as the property has just 11 guest rooms. In 2017, it underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation led by architect Andrew Chary, who honored the hotel's past and restored its original brass and chrome fixtures and stone fireplaces. Yes, it's rustic, but that doesn't mean it isn't fancy. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, dinner at the hotel is a black-tie event, so make sure to pack your finest attire. Of course, if you can't get a room, there's always The Sagamore Resort , a luxurious Colonial Revival grande dame right on Lake George.

5. Providence, Rhode Island: 3.5-Hour Drive

Providence, Rhode Island, exudes all the charm you'd expect from a great New England city. It's a place where you'll still find cobblestone streets and narrow river walks alongside modern dining establishments, world-class theater, and museums to rival those found in any of its larger counterparts.

While in Providence, head to Waterplace Park . Channel your inner Venetian by booking a ride along the city's rivers with La Gondola , or plan your trip around WaterFire , an art installation that lights up the rivers with almost 100 braziers on several weekends throughout the summer and fall.

After catching a show, head to Oberlin , a modern seafood spot consistently ranked among the best restaurants in the U.S. Then spend the night at ultra-cool, 52-key The Dean, where rooms are outfitted with a mix of custom and vintage furniture and original artwork adorning the walls. Or, for a bit more history, stay at Graduate Providence , previously known as the Providence Biltmore. Each of the rooms and common spaces pays homage to the city's past with vintage furnishings and artifacts.

6. Mystic, Connecticut: 2.5-Hour Drive

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

As far as picture-perfect villages go, they don't get much better than Mystic, Connecticut. The adorable town is home to fewer than 5,000 permanent residents, making it a great place to go for a quaint getaway.

It may be small, but the town has no shortage of activities. If you're traveling as a family, there is the famous Mystic Aquarium , where you can spend an entire day roaming around and learning all about your favorite sea creatures. Want to see marine life in their natural habitat? Book a summer sail with Argia Mystic Cruises . The company's 81-foot schooner takes visitors around the seaport and the nearby islands. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnics and beverages (including beer and wine, just no hard liquor).

Cap off a visit to Mystic by staying at Ocean House , located in nearby Watch Hill. The famed inn is 25 minutes away and provides guests with even more New England charm, thanks to its meticulous restoration, stunning ocean views, and world-class amenities.

7. Philadelphia: 2-Hour Drive

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

The City of Brotherly Love beckons a day trip, weekend, or a getaway for as long as you need. Arrive by car or take an 80-minute Amtrak ride for a more relaxing journey.

There is so much to see and do in this vibrant city, including a few classics like snapping a picture in front of The Liberty Bell, touring Independence Hall, and running up the "Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art — doing your best Stallone face the entire way.

The city has a high-end culinary scene — chef Michael Solomonov's Zahav and Laser Wolf , both serving Israeli cuisine, are must-visits. But you also need to take part in a classic Philly tradition and order a cheesesteak. To get a taste of as many different versions as you can, head to Reading Terminal Market — one of the country's oldest public markets — where you can also pick up some local artisan goods.

After you've filled your belly, you'll need a good rest. Stay at The Logan, Curio Collection by Hilton , where you'll get a room with not only a plush bed but also modern decor and local artwork, as well as hotel amenities like a full-service spa, a steakhouse, and a rooftop terrace.

8. Washington, D.C.: 4-Hour Drive

Victoria Chamberlain/Travel + Leisure

The capital's endless activities fit all interests and travel palates. Visitors can lean into D.C.'s history by touring the famous monuments on the National Mall and delve into worlds of dinosaurs, art history, and the like in any of the 16 Smithsonian museums in the city. To experience the top attractions in a more unique way, you could always hop on a night tour by D.C. Trolley Tours and view them under the stars.

After you tick off the usual highlights, you should explore the places on Washingtonians' hot list: local art exhibits at Dupont Underground , jazz concerts in the National Gallery of Art sculpture garden, and the expansive farmers market in Columbia Heights , to name a few.

Once you're wiped out from sightseeing, check in to The St. Regis Washington, D.C. Located just two blocks from The White House, the hotel has hosted A-listers and dignitaries alike for nearly 100 years — and it's your turn to join them.

9. Newport, Rhode Island: 3-Hour Drive

Another popular Rhode Island weekend getaway, Newport has long been a haven for New Yorkers escaping the fast pace of the city in exchange for a slower way of life.

Here, you can explore the former homes of some truly rich and fabulous people on a self-guided tour of the iconic Newport Mansions . Follow that up with a stroll along the 3.5-mile Newport Cliff Walk , which provides some of the most breathtaking views along the entire Eastern Seaboard. You can get out on the water yourself by renting a sailboat and exploring Narragansett Bay.

Finally, live (briefly) like the Newport elite with a stay at The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection , a hotel built in 1909 as the Newport County YMCA. With just 33 guest rooms, it's a place where you'll enjoy five-star service just as a Vanderbilt would.

10. Nantucket, Massachusetts: 7-Hour Drive and Ferry Ride

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

If Nantucket, Massachusetts is on your "must-see" list for a short getaway, you might consider hopping on an 80-minute flight rather than spending seven hours driving and ferrying to the island. No matter how you arrive, you're guaranteed to have a relaxing time on this slice of pure Americana.

Nantucket is brimming with activities — renting a bike and going for a slow pedal around town, taking in the Instagram-worthy shingled homes, cruising through the harbor, or casting a line on an organized fishing trip — to help you slow down and appreciate the little things. The world's your oyster in Nantucket (and the local oysters are all yours, too).

While Nantucket still has its small-town vibe, it's blossoming into a global destination. "There was a real energy in the town, and there was also a surprising sense of openness and accessibility," reported Akash Kapur for T+L . "While entry was, in the latter half of the last century, largely restricted to certain classes and races, Nantucket was now teeming with a diverse population."

Cap off your very serene day with a stay at White Elephant . With its stunning lawn along the waterfront, you can both start and end your days with the soothing sounds of the crashing waves outside.

11. Portland, Maine: 5-Hour Drive

Portland, Maine is a place where everyone can find a slice of vacation bliss. From above-average antique and vintage shops to a craft beer scene that must be sipped and savored to ample outdoor space for roaming on a warm day, the city is suitable for group and solo trips alike.

Erinne Magee, a lifelong Mainer and former Portland resident, reported on the best things to do in Portland for T+L . Her list includes visiting the Portland Observatory for 360-degree views of the city, taking a ferry to Peaks Island, and leisurely exploring the cobblestone streets of the Old Port neighborhood.

Seafood lovers shouldn't pass up the lobster dinner at Eventide . The raw bar and restaurant is well known for scrumptious New England bites — including the classic lobster roll.

After dinner, settle in for the night at The Press Hotel, Autograph Collection , whose historic downtown building once housed the Portland Press Herald . The hotel honors its history with a nostalgic newspaper theme throughout. "If you have a thing for old typewriters or simply want to visit a building that celebrates art in all forms, stop into The Press Hotel for a beverage and board game," reported Magee. "You can also explore the lower level museum featuring Maine artists or type your own special something on the typewriter in the lobby."

If you don't mind driving a bit, White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection , located about 40 minutes outside the city in Kennebunkport, will grant you an unforgettable stay. The drive will allow you to further explore Maine's stunning landscapes, and the hotel itself is a true gem, home to an award-winning restaurant.

12. Hudson Valley, New York: 2.5-Hour Drive

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

For a weekend trip that feels like it's just a stone's throw away, head up north to the Hudson Valley for a retreat filled with fine dining and wine. The Culinary Institute of America calls the Hudson Valley home — while in the area, pay a visit (it's been called one of the most beautiful campuses in the country), and explore the greater culinary scene, from Michelin-rated restaurants to casual bakeries and cafés. Dinner by acclaimed chef Jean-Georges at The Inn at Pound Ridge is not to be missed.

For a drink, embark on the Dutchess Wine Trail , which leads to world-class vineyards and delicious tasting rooms. When you're ready to retire for the night, head over to The Maker , a hotel that radiates class and culture.

13. Farmington, Pennsylvania: 6-Hour Drive

Farmington, Pennsylvania, is perhaps the quirkiest little gem on this list of weekend getaway destinations. It's a place to get out in nature and dive deep into the fun-loving culture.

During your stay in Farmington, visit nearby Laurel Caverns , which contains the state's largest cave. While the cave itself is fascinating, it's made even more so by the colorful lights installed inside. For design admirers, there are not one but two Frank Lloyd Wright homes nearby, including the famous Fallingwater home, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which you can visit on a group or personal tour.

Then, drive over to the ever-popular Nemacolin for chateau accommodations and experiences from axe throwing to cosmic bowling to acupuncture.

14. Cape May, New Jersey: 2.5-Hour Drive

There are family-friendly getaway spots, and then there's Cape May. Located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, this stunning oceanfront community is at the top of just about every East Coast "best weekend getaway" list.

Rent a cruiser from Cape Island Bikes or take a trolley tour to see as much of the colorful town as possible, or go on an afternoon cruise to see Cape May from the water and maybe even spot a whale or two while you're out there. For dinner, reserve a table in advance at the Blue Pig Tavern , serving surf and turf classics with farm-fresh ingredients, and grab a couple of beers under string lights while listening to live music at Exit Zero Filling Station while you wait.

Dig a little deeper into the Americana vibe with an overnight at The Virginia Hotel & Cottages , a 24-room boutique hotel in a lovingly restored building constructed in 1879. It also has four cottages.

15. Bermuda: 2-Hour Flight

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

Plot twist: While Bermuda isn't exactly within driving distance, it's actually a shorter commute from NYC than many of the above destinations. A two-hour flight will land you in a subtropical paradise. In fact, travel journalist Alison Fox reported for T+L that Bermuda is cheaper and faster from NYC than the Hamptons: "The affordable direct flights — including the brand-new JetBlue one from LGA — and the easy-to-use bus system to help travelers get around definitely make Bermuda a compelling alternative to domestic travel this summer."

On the main island, bask in the sun, swim in the crystalline sea, drink rum swizzles at The Swizzle Inn , make your own scent at the Lili Bermuda Perfumery , visit natural wonders like The Blue Hole Park, and finish off the five-star visit with a stay at a five-star hotel. Rosewood Bermuda is set on a sprawling, private stretch of pink sand beach, the perfect spot to be marooned for a long weekend.

16. Lake Placid, New York: 5-Hour Drive

Tanya Nikolic/Travel + Leisure

Lake Placid is another farther-flung location, but it’s well worth the journey if you want to enjoy a year-round outdoor destination. In the spring, summer, and fall, visitors will be delighted to find a dazzling array of outdoor activities, from hiking through  High Falls Gorge , a 22-acre nature park boasting four waterfalls, to taking a dip in the 128-acre Mirror Lake .

Of course, this place is also a winter paradise – famed for hosting the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Powder hounds can get their adrenaline rush on the slopes of  Whiteface Mountain , which offers 22 miles of terrain for skiing and snowboarding.

Start at least one day with a hearty plate of eggs, a breakfast sandwich, or the decadent French toast fondue from  The Breakfast Club, Etc . And for later-in-the-day fare, look no further than  Smoke Signals , a BBQ joint with finger-licking brisket, ribs, and pulled pork.

Check into the  The Lake Placid Stagecoach Inn , a delightful boutique inn housed in a building from the 1700s that still boasts plenty of historical charm.

17. The Poconos, Pennsylvania: 2-Hour Drive

Richard T. Nowitz/Getty Images

The Pocono Mountains are another delightful outdoorsy destination prime for getting out of the city. Come here for a little family fun like visiting  Camelback Mountain , a massive adventure park that will leave kids and kids at heart smiling from ear to ear. There’s also the  Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which will zip you through the stunning local scenery, and  miles upon miles of hiking  through old-growth forests in the Poconos trail system.

Remember, The Poconos cover about 2,400 square miles, so plan your dining according to the area you want to visit. A couple of not-to-miss spots in the region include Wilkes-Barre's  Cork Bar and Restaurant , serving seafood with an Italian twist (think roasted red pepper gnocchi shrimp and shrimp and crab bolognese), along with  Native  in Honesdale, an upscale eatery focusing on dishes made from locally sourced produce.

Lay your head at any number of area hotels. Among the best are  Cove Haven Resort , a kitschy, old-school, couples-only hotel famed for its heart-shaped tubs, and  Woodloch Resort , a family-friendly resort where all ages can have fun in the great outdoors.

18. Washington, Connecticut: 2-Hour Drive

Prisma by Dukas/Getty Images

Find rural bliss just two hours outside the city with a visit to Washington, Connecticut, where verdant landscapes are abundant but so too are the cultural attractions. Dive deep into the region at the  Institute For American Indian Studies , which traces the lives of Indigenous peoples back more than 10,000 years. Get your fill of fresh air at the  Hollister House Garden , a massive green space open in the spring and summer to showcase the local blooms, and get a taste of something locally brewed at  Hopkins Vineyard , a heritage farm that produces award-winning wines.

Then, dig into more local favorites at The 202 Tavern , serving classic American food made by local purveyors, and  G.W. Tavern , whose menu features comforting classics like French onion soup and chicken wings.

The area may not have a lot of accommodations, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for with pure quality. The elegant  Mayflower Inn & Spa, Auberge Resorts Collection will leave you totally renewed thanks to its inviting and cozy guest rooms and its in-depth wellness programming, including traditional spa services and expert-led health coaching.

19. North Fork, New York: 2-Hour Drive

Escape to the North Fork, New York whenever you need a Long Island getaway without all the pomp and circumstance. Just two hours from the city (traffic permitting), this is the spot to be for a beach day, a great glass of wine, and a little farm-style fun. You really can’t go wrong at any of its beaches, but great options include  Wildwood State Park , which also includes a 600-acre forest, and  Orient Beach State Park at the end of North Fork.

According to Hannah Walhout, a former senior editor at T+L, "This part of Long Island was always a sleepy place — worlds away from the big-money scene of the nearby Hamptons. But these days, more and more city dwellers are making the trek, drawn by the peninsula’s rolling coastline, rambling vineyards, and hyper-local gastronomy."

After basking in the sun, head to the waterfront  Kontokosta Winery to enjoy panoramic views of Long Island Sound with your vino. Don't leave without stopping by  8 Hands Farm  for farm store goodies to take back home. For more food,  The Halyard  has locally sourced produce and fresh-caught fish, and  Bruce & Son  is beloved for its all-day brunch.

Round out your vacation with a stay at  Sound View Greenport , a design-forward hotel on 14 waterfront acres, or  The Lin Beach House , a chic guesthouse with clawfoot tubs in every guest room.
