2015 Dodge Ram 1500 cruise control not working

Causes of the problem:

There are several common causes for cruise control not working in the Ram 1500. One of the most common is an issue with the brake pedal sensor. The brake pedal sensor is responsible for detecting when the brake pedal is pressed, and it sends this information to the cruise control module.

If the sensor is malfunctioning, the cruise control module may not receive the correct information and will not engage. Another common cause is an issue with the cruise control module itself.

The cruise control module is responsible for controlling the speed of the vehicle and engaging the cruise control. If the module is not working properly, the cruise control will not engage.

Symptoms of the problem:

There are several signs that the cruise control is not working properly in the Ram 1500. One of the most obvious symptoms is that the cruise control light on the dashboard will not come on when the cruise control is engaged.

Another symptom is that the cruise control will not engage at all, regardless of whether the light is on or off. If you experience these symptoms, it is likely that there is an issue with your cruise control system.

Solutions for ram 1500 cruise control not working:

If you are experiencing problems with your Ram 1500’s cruise control, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. One of the first things you should check is the fuses. The cruise control system relies on several fuses to function properly, and if one of these fuses is blown,

The system will not work. Another step you can take is to reset the system. This can be done by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it is best to consult a mechanic. A professional mechanic will be able to diagnose and repair any problems with your Ram 1500’s cruise control system.

If you are experiencing problems with your Ram 1500’s cruise control, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

1: Check the fuses:

The cruise control system relies on several fuses to function properly, and if one of these fuses is blown, the system will not work. To check the fuses, locate the fuse box in your Ram 1500 and consult the owner’s manual to identify which fuses are related to the cruise control system.

Use a fuse tester or a multimeter to check if the fuses are good or not. If you find a blown fuse, replace it with a new one with the same amperage rating.

2: Reset the system:

Another step you can take is to reset the system. This can be done by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it. This will reset all the systems in the car including the cruise control.

Once the battery is reconnected, turn on the ignition and test the cruise control to see if the problem has been resolved.

3: Check the brake pedal sensor:

If the fuses are good and the system has been reset but the cruise control is still not working, check the brake pedal sensor. The brake pedal sensor is responsible for detecting when the brake pedal is pressed, and it sends this information to the cruise control module.

If the sensor is malfunctioning, the cruise control module may not receive the correct information and will not engage. To check the sensor, locate it behind the brake pedal. Inspect it for any damage or debris that may be preventing it from working properly. Clean it if necessary.

4: Check the cruise control module:

Another common cause is an issue with the cruise control module itself. The cruise control module is responsible for controlling the speed of the vehicle and engaging the cruise control. If the module is not working properly, the cruise control will not engage.

To check the cruise control module, consult the owner’s manual to locate it in the vehicle. Inspect it for any damage or corrosion. If it is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

5: Consult a mechanic:

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is best to consult a mechanic. A professional mechanic will be able to diagnose and repair any problems with your Ram 1500’s cruise control system. They will have the proper tools, equipment, and expertise to diagnose the problem and repair it correctly.

It’s important to note that these are general troubleshooting steps and the solution may vary depending on the specific problem. It’s always best to refer to the owner’s manual of the vehicle or consult a mechanic if you have doubts.

Crazy cruise control problem! PLEASE HELP!

  • Add to quote

Crazy cruise control problem! PLEASE HELP! I have a 2002 Ram 1500 SLT 4.7 4WD I recently moved from FL to TX. I towed a loaded down 6x12 U-Haul trailer. The cruise control worked perfect for more than half the trip. After a regular stop for gas I got back on the highway and the cruise control stopped working properly. When I push the CRUISE ON/OFF button the dash light that says CRUISE would light, but when I push the SET button it would not set the speed. I know most often this is the result of a vacuum leak; I've triple checked, I do not have a vacuum leak. Through hours of research I learned the brake switches can go faulty. I lifted up on the pedal to make sure it was causing the cruise control the think the pedal was being slightly pushed, no effect. I then checked the cruise control unit itself, some other posts said their servos got stuck. None of my servos were rusted or stuck. I do not know if it was a result of this check or coincidence but now when I push the CRUISE ON/OFF button it only stays on for a few seconds, sometimes it's on for two seconds sometimes it's on for longer, but it always goes out. Once it goes out it will not come back on until I shut the truck off and start it again. Someone said the brake switch supplies some power to the unit somehow so I replaced it to be sure, again not effect. I've taken the steering covers off to check for cut or shorted out wires, everything looks good. I can't think if any other ideas. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS!!!

Is there a brake light or cruise control error light? Are you using a programmer for something like adjusting for tire size? Aside from that, my first thought would be to check the ABS fuse in the fuse box and then check the ABS sensor in the rear differential and front wheel sensors. If there's any damaged, the cruise wont engage. .

It is displaying no codes. If it was abs wouldn't it display codes, or at least the abs light be on? Nonetheless I will certainly check them. Are there just the 3?

Is there a test I can do to see if the sensors are bad? Also, I only found the sensor in the rear diff, there was nothing plugged into the front hubs, unless they are well hidden??

At this point, I'd check the vacuum lines and tee next to the brake booster and then Cruise Control Servo under the battery. .

Thanks for all y'alls help! I still haven't solved it but I appreciate the input. This is where I'm at: I'm certain I have no front ABS sensor, only in the rear differential. I guess some the 2002 models slipped out without ABS in the front? Is there a test for the rear sensor? I'd imagine if it was bad I'd have a code or ABS light on, right? I guess it's also passible to be partly faulty, I just don't wanna replace it if there is no reason. I am not using any programmers. The ABS fuse is good. I am certain the T and other vacuum lines are good, no leaks. (If it was a vacuum leak that would cause the dash light go out would it? It should only prevent the cruise control system from being about to set the proper vacuum to hold your 'SET' speed, right) I've double checked the Cruise Control Servo under the battery. Everything is getting power, I've even confirmed it holds vacuum pressure. Is there something else to be checked on the servo?? Any other ideas?? Thanks again.

Not all trucks have 4-wheel ABS. Mine did this exact thing after I pulled my utility trailer about 80 miles. I was going to look at the connector on the rear diff when it miraculously cured itself. One of the symptoms was if I held down the cruise "set" button, the cruise would turn off. I think the trailer towing was a coincidence, but maybe not. You might check the connector on the rear diff.

Check the one way vacuum check valve at the brake booster. Then make sure the throttle body and sensors are clean then check for free movement with the linkage and cables.

Interestingly enough, my truck started doing this yesterday. Maybe there's something in the air? Haha. I haven't started troubleshooting yet, but this thread is great. Please let us know when you find the fault.

The check valve is good. Linkage is good. The throttle body plugs appear to be good also. In fact, 2 months ago before I made the trip to Texas the TPS sensor threw a CEL code and I replaced it. The CEL came back on twice during the drive to Texas. The last time I had it read I asked the dude to clear it since I knew I replaced it properly. It has not come back on since. However, sometimes when I idle at a stop light it will dip to about 500rpms for a few seconds then rise to 700-750rpms, where it should be. I imagine this is more of the IAC sensor? It hasn't stalled out or caused any problems so I do not think it is the cause of the cruise control problem. Interestingly, through doing more research, I think I found the problem... I didn't know my year was equipped with the on-off-on-off-on trick to see codes. I got two questions, first, why does a code appear when doing this trick but doesn't throw the CEL? Second, the code that appears is P1595, which is the SPEED CONTROL SOLENOID CIRCUITS. Does this mean it is the abs/speed sensor in the rear diff or does it mean there is a short somewhere along the way? Thanks again y'all.

Pmhorstman said: ..... P1595 - SPEED CONTROL SOLENOID CIRCUITS. Does this mean it is the abs/speed sensor in the rear diff or does it mean there is a short somewhere along the way? Thanks again y'all. Click to expand...

Well, the sensor on the rear diff is reading the tone ring to determine the vehicle speed. AFAIK, it's just the sensor. The "solenoid" reference would indicate the problem's up front.

I'm posting this to help others that may find the info useful. I found it while doing some more research. Although, without a live scan tool it doesn't look like I'll be able to track down the fault. DTC P1595: SPEED CONTROL SOLENOID CIRCUITS 1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate speed control vent solenoid and listen for operating sound (click) at speed control servo. Speed control servo is located below driver's side battery tray. See Fig. 59 . If operating sound is heard at speed control servo, go to next step. If operating sound is not heard at speed control servo, go to step 6 . 2. Ensure ignition is on and speed control vent solenoid is still actuated. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between speed control servo, brake switch and PCM while checking for interruption of speed control vent solenoid actuation. Brake switch is located near top of brake pedal. PCM is located at passenger's side rear corner of engine compartment. If speed control vent solenoid actuation was not interrupted while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, stop actuation of speed control vent solenoid. Go to next step. If speed control vent solenoid actuation was interrupted while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, stop actuation of speed control vent solenoid. Repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Happy with my cruise control!!

Posted by Dallas on 11th May 2019

I am so very pleased to have cruise control after the dealer told me I couldn't have it added. Installation was relatively simple. The hardest part was depinning the AMP connector terminals. Great product!

easy install, everything worked

Posted by Dustin on 14th Feb 2018

I was surprised how easy it was just to plug and play. Sure you had to figure out how to remove the airbag and then cut a section of plastic out. But as far as the wiring it was straightforward and worked. I read through the instructions before I even ordered, and then called in to confirm and they were kind enough to answer everything. My only question is why the truck didn't come with one in the first place since it as already pre-wired. No idea what Dodge was thinking.

Ram Trucks w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (3 Popular Models)

Adaptive cruise control is increasingly common in many mainstream vehicles, including Ram pickups.

The following Ram trucks have adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

ram

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The more-basic cruise control in older vehicles helps maintain a steady cruising speed for a relaxing long-distance drive.

The more sophisticated adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the vehicle’s speed to match the car ahead, which is excellent for highway cruising and avoiding collisions.

Compelling alternatives to Ram trucks include:

  • Ford SUVs and trucks with cruise control .
  • Chevy SUVs and trucks with cruise control .
  • GMC SUVs and trucks with cruise control .
  • Jeep SUVs and trucks with cruise control .

Ram Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 ram 1500.

Full-size light-duty pickup trucks are an American favorite.

The hotly contested segment has several frontrunners, like Ford F-150 , Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra – all with adaptive cruise control or the older and more basic cruise control.

Mostly hybrid powertrain equipped, Ram 1500 models have had cruise control as a standard provision since 2013; 2011 and 2012 Ram 1500s did not have cruise control in the lowest trim.

No Ram 1500 model years have adaptive cruise control, however.

#2 Ram 2500

With more payload and towing capacity than the Ram 1500, the Ram 2500 is the logical step up for greater strength to shoulder heavier loads.

Although rival makes have similar heavy-duty offerings, the 2500 is a compelling choice for work and leisure as Ram trucks are some of the most livable daily drivers .

Except for the 2011 model, all Ram 2500 models have cruise control as a standard provision; no Ram 2500 has adaptive cruise control.

This Ram truck also has the Power Wagon variant with enhanced off-road capability.

#3 Ram 3500

The Ram 3500 is the American automaker’s most extreme heavy-duty truck, with massive towing and hauling capacities.

It competes with Ford F-350, GMC Sierra 3500HD, and Chevy Silverado 3500HD, although the Ram 3500’s comfortable seat and relatively quiet cabin are massive pluses.

All Ram 3500 heavy-duty trucks have the cruise control system as standard, regardless of the near-limitless configurations to meet various needs.

Six-Cylinder Ram 1500 RHO Offers More Power Per Buck Of Any Off-Road Sport Truck

Ram added yet another sport truck to its off-road line up, but the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO, nicknamed “rhino,” is definitely more than just an eight-inch-wider Ram Rebel with a more powerful inline-6 engine. It’s a truck that’s been developed specifically for the serious off-road wanderer, and it serves as a replacement for the now-dead V8 TRX .

Now, I know you’re thinking, “But Jalopnik, isn’t Ram’s lineup already lousy with powerful sport trucks?” and you’d be right! But as of right now, none of them come with the Hurricane High Output turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine good for 540 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque. This beefy truck is more of a sibling of the Ram 1500 Classic Warlock and Ram 1500 Rebel, and with pricing at $69,995, it tops the off-road line up. That’s $129.60 per pony.

Of course, anyone in the market for a Rebel right now knows its nearly impossible to get one close to its starting price of $64,490, and that’s with an inline-six that only makes 420 hp and 469 lb-ft.

The RHO can tow 8,380 pounds with a max payload of 1,520 pounds. With 32 inches of water fording, this truck is pretty close to serving as a temporary boat, and with 11.8 inches of ground clearance, the RHO sits over two inches higher than the rest of the lineup thanks to absolutely beastly 35-inch tires. The RHO will do 0-to-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and 0-to-100 mph in 11.7 seconds, and you get a top speed of 118 mph. Do you need that in an off-roading truck? Probably not! But you’re getting it. You also get the regular bevy of drive modes, with a special Baja mode for tearing up sand dunes at speed.

And there there’s that big hood duct all lit up like you could land a plane on it during a thick fog. You can’t miss it. This isn’t just for show; the vent scoops up air to aid in the combustion process, with a high-capacity radial air filter keeping all that fresh air fresh. The see-through RAM badge and airy grille are also meant to keep the engine breathing at max capacity. It’s an easy clean conical filter that owners can knock the dust and rocks out of during a sojourn off road. When that air finishes its journey through the engine and comes out the tailpipe of the RHO, it will have a distinct growl thanks to a “Sport Tune” low-restriction system with true dual pipes.

The truck also comes with some true off-roading tech that makes the rhino so much more than a parking lot queen. High-strength aluminum is used throughout the guts of the RHO, making for a lighter, more efficient and stronger vehicle. You can especially see the use of this material in the independent front suspension system, especially in the front upper and lower control arms inspired by desert off-road racers. Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shock keeps your ride nice and loose whether on rocks, sand or the daily commute, with plenty of travel. The rear axle gets 14 inches of space to play with — 40 percent more than any other 1500 — but without sacrificing cargo space.

Inside you’ll find sporty seats meant to hug driver and passenger alike like their fathers never could. The requisite screens are there of course: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver, a 14.5-inch display in the middle running Uconnect 5 and another 10.25-inch screen for the passenger who can scroll through apps and the internet while riding shotgun. Ram boast that is a best-in-class amount of screens. Not entirely sure that more screens = better car, but the RHO also comes with “redundant” HVAC buttons, so at least you can heat up and cool down without navigating menus and touching screens. Not only that, The RHO comes with a full-color heads-up display, and it also gets all of the driver-assistance features you could ever want (if you even want them) with features like lane centering and adaptive cruise control.

Cruise Control activation button intermittent

  • Add to quote

This problem began within weeks of purchasing the truck. Sometimes the on/off button would activate the cruise control, sometimes it wouldn't. The dealer replaced the switch in the steering wheel and everything worked fine for a few months but now it's doing it again. I don't think it's the switch itself this time. I can cycle the ignition and often the cruise will activate again. I searched this 2016 forum but didn't find any similar threads. I have, however, found examples of this issue elsewhere on the internet. Would appreciate any additional feedback or a point-out to pertinent threads!! I'll be taking the truck back to the dealer but I want to go armed (with information that is)!!

When I click on the link you provided it seems to only give me the option to PM Ramcares, but I can't PM him due to insufficient posts.

My 2013 and 2015 Laramie both suffered from this. I never had it looked at because they can't recreate the issue so they never can fix it.

02 ram 1500 cruise control

I also have this same exact problem. Only 7000 miles on the truck and stays parked sometimes for a week or 2 at a time. Then when I drive it after it has been parked I have the problem. If I press on the button hard enough, the cruise control will engage and then no problems after that turning it on and off. It definitely seems like a switch issue in my case. I have contacted the dealer but my appointment isn't until end of June so I can get the recall taken care of at the same time. I'm interested to see if anyone that has the same issues on their truck gets it resolved.

My internet searches have revealed that this cruise control issue is not rare. A work-around that I have seen more than once is to press the manual gear selector buttons (above the cruise control on/off). You press the "-" gear button then the "+" button and then often the cruise control activation button will work again. I have not tried this yet but will report when i have. As i mentioned in the original post, I had the cruise control on/off button replaced once and that worked ok for a while. I don't think it's just the button this time however because before I had it changed you could press hard on the edge of the button and it would usually work. This time it doesn't work. I have to shut the ignition off then restart and sometimes it will work properly.

Hi JasAB, Do you have another appointment scheduled with your dealership to have this addressed? Kori Ram Social Care Specialist

Had the same problem with my truck, they replaced the cruise control buttons and I haven't had an issue since. I remember counting once and it took 53 presses for my cruise control to come on lol, truck had about 4000kms or 2500 miles on it when mine went out.

02 ram 1500 cruise control

Sometimes I have to push the button 3 or 4 times to get it to come on. May be coincidence but I never noticed an issue until after I loaded a uConnect update. Have once had an issue where the cancel button didn't work, but only once.

When I had my 2015 Ram 1500 they replaced my switch but I still had my CC not activate every so often. They ended up diagnosing, If I remember correctly, my speed sensor was faulty so it would prevent the CC from activating. Speedometer worked fine, just the sensor the CC needed to operate didn't was crapping out.

So I had a 2-hr road trip today and the cruise control worked fine on the outbound trip but on the return I was unable to activate the cruise control. I tried the manual gear selector trick that some folks have had success with but it didn't help. Then I tried something else that I saw on another thread somewhere... I put the tilt steering wheel up and then back to the position i was driving in and bingo, the cruise control button worked!! That's just one data point and maybe it was a coincidence but time will tell i guess.

Thanks my brother! This has been plaguing me on 3 different rams, and it works like a charm. Must be something in the wire loom making a bad connection! Appreciate you!
