What is Škoda’s Adaptive Cruise Control?

Cruise Control is a valuable feature with numerous benefits. However, many drivers either underutilise it or harbour skepticism about taking their foot off the pedals. Škoda’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) stands out as an advanced, safer, and more user-friendly iteration of traditional Cruise Control. In this guide, we’ll delve into what Adaptive Cruise Control entails and provide insights on maximizing its capabilities. Whether you’re new to Adaptive Cruise Control or already a Škoda vehicle owner using this feature, there may be some valuable tips to enhance your driving experience.

What’s the difference between Cruise Control and Adaptive Cruise control?

Traditional Cruise Control is designed to maintain a constant speed set by the driver. Now, enter Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), an enhancement of conventional Cruise Control that takes the driving experience to a whole new level. ACC goes beyond merely setting a speed; it intelligently adjusts your car’s speed to match the speed of the vehicle in front of you and maintains the desired distance between vehicles chosen by the driver. If the leading car slows down, ACC seamlessly adapts, ensuring a smooth and safe following distance.

The beauty of ACC lies in its automatic responsiveness – as the car ahead changes lanes or accelerates beyond your preset speed, your ACC effortlessly allows your vehicle to resume its designated pace. The process is straightforward: set your desired speed, turn on the system, and choose your preferred following distance. With Adaptive Cruise Control, it’s not just about maintaining speed; it’s about a dynamic and intuitive driving experience that enhances safety and convenience on the road.

Why use Adaptive Cruise Control

Cruise control serves as a powerful tool, mitigating driver fatigue, preventing speeding, and increasing fuel efficiency (including EVs). Škoda’s Adaptive Cruise Control takes these advantages a step further, by blending convenience and safety into the driving experience. By using sensors, your Škoda can automatically detect it’s surroundings and smoothly adjust speed accordingly, drivers can also customise their preferences effortlessly at their finger-tips. This advanced system is a standard feature in all new Škoda vehicles, each boasting the maximum 5-star NCAP rating.

How to use Škoda Adaptive Cruise Control

Like most cruise control levers, the stalk is located off the back of the steering wheel. To activate ACC;

1. Pull the lever forward and onto the ‘ON’ position, this will set to your current speed.

2. Move the lever up or down to increase or decrease the set speed in 10kmph increments.

3. Press and hold the ‘SET’ button to decrease the speed by 1kmph / If you pull the lever toward you, it will increase the speed by 1kmph.

4. With the rocker switch on top, set the distance between you and the car ahead by flicking left for more space and right for less.

5. To pause cruise control, push the lever back halfway. This will store all the speed and distance settings you were using. To resume ACC, pull the lever all the way forward again.

6. To completely turn off ACC, push the lever all the way back,

ŠKODA ENYAQ iV Travel Assist

Travel assist.

Travel Assist integrates several systems and functions, which we present separately on the following pages. When they are interconnected, the car can make driving a lot easier and increase travelling comfort . Once activated, Travel Assist can automatically stop and restart, keep the car in lane, follow other vehicles in a traffic jam, or show the surrounding traffic on a display in front of you.

PREDICTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

Besides keeping track of the traffic ahead, the Predictive Cruise Control also processes recognised travel signs and speed limits stored in the navigation system. This enables it to adjust speed in good time, for example when it is approaching a bend , a roundabout, or an intersection, or in response to speed limits .

TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION

A picture processing module searches scanned pictures for known traffic signs and compares the results with the navigation data. The system processes speed limit signs, no-overtaking signs, no-entry signs on one-way streets and any supplementary instructions, as well as associated restriction clearance signs, and then displays them to the driver.

ADAPTIVE LANE ASSIST

Lane Assist can tell when you stray from a lane unintentionally . This system works in conjunction with a camera to recognise lane markings on the road, including yellow lines during roadworks, traffic cones, and other roadside or lane borders. The enhanced “Adaptive” variant (only available as part of Travel Assist) means that the system intervenes in an attempt to keep the vehicle in the selected track within the traffic lane , and the car does not “weave”.

TRAFFIC JAM ASSIST

Traffic Jam Assist makes it easier to drive a car in traffic jams . It draws on the Adaptive Cruise Control and Adaptive Lane Assist to start, brake and turn the car to copy the movement of surrounding vehicles in a traffic jam.

EMERGENCY ASSIST

Emergency Assist reduces risk of an incident if the driver is not feeling well. If Adaptive Lane Assist detects that the driver does not have hands on the steering wheel even after a warning alert, Emergency Assist is activated, decelerates the car to halt while keeping it in lane and activating the hazard warning lights.

Škoda Superb

Side assist.

Thanks to two radar systems at the rear of the car, the Side Assist detects vehicles approaching from behind or that are in the car’s blind spot. The driver is informed of this by an LED signal on the inner edge of the wing mirror housings. While the familiar Blind Spot Detect has a range of up to 20 m, Side Assist can detect vehicles from a distance of up to 70 m away and thus also effectively warns the driver of hazardous situations on motorways and dual carriageways.

Lane Assist

Lane Assist is a system designed to keep the vehicle in its lane and, if necessary, alert the driver of an unwanted lane change. The camera monitors the horizontal road marking, and the assistant intervenes in the steering to keep the vehicle inside its lane. The “adaptive lane guidance” mode is a smart function designed to intervene in the steering in order to keep the vehicle in the centre of its lane.

Driver Alert

Driver Alert detects signs of fatigue in the driver and prompts the driver to take a break. This system monitors the driver’s behaviour, evaluates the degree of their tiredness and, if necessary, recommends the driver to stop and have a rest, thus reducing the risk of dangerous situations that might result from the driver’s fatigue.

Auto Light Assist

Auto Light Assist automatically turns the high beam on and off depending on the current traffic situation. It detects external light sources with a camera installed at the foot of the rear-view mirror. It monitors light intensity, which it uses to determine whether high beam may be used.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

The radar cruise control keeps the vehicle at a chosen distance from the car in front, mostly accelerating and braking automatically. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically keeps a sufficient distance from vehicles moving ahead (max. 160 km/h or 210 km/h), dynamically, depending on the movement of the vehicles ahead or on a driver-defined safety distance. Besides the speed, the driver can also progressively configure the distance as well as the dynamics of the control on the operating lever of the steering wheel.

Front Assist

A system designed to monitor the distance from the vehicle ahead, including automatic slowing down and braking, and to warn the driver of the danger of collision or, if a collision is inevitable, minimise its consequences by braking. It also detects if a pedestrian or cyclist dangerously attempts to cross the path of the car, using a sophisticated signal evaluation algorithm.

Park Distance Control and Manoeuvre Assist

Park Distance Control consists of sensors integrated in the rear bumper, which check the car’s distance from any obstacles. Alerts take the form of sound signals or visual signals on the infotainment display. There are three ultrasound sensors in the back bumper, which monitor the area around the vehicle.

KESSY (Keyless-Entry-Start-and-Exit-System) allows drivers to use the car without having to pull the car keys out of their pocket. The car can be unlocked after mutual identification between the KESSY starter module and the transmitter in the car key, which has a range of about 1.5 metres. After grasping the right or left front door handle, which has a touch sensor on its outer side, the car unlocks.

Virtual pedal

Fitted with electric drive units, the tailgate can be easily opened and closed in several ways, including the virtual pedal. The touch-free tailgate opening system features a motion sensor to monitor the area under the rear bumper. Upon detecting a “kick”, i.e. a foot moving forward and then backward (longitudinal direction) and identifying an authorised key in the KESSY zone behind the vehicle, the system opens the tailgate.

Traffic sign recognition

The Travel Assist system uses the camera in the rear-view mirror to scan the traffic signs on the current stretch of road and notify the driver of traffic signs. The system is able to identify signs on both the left and right sides, as well as above the road. Moreover, it is able to identify variable traffic signing, too (electronic information boards).

The SmarLink integrates the well-known interfaces Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink™ into one combined platform. The phone might be connected to the car systems with a cable, using one of two front USB-C slots (not simultaneously). The system can now also be connected wirelessly for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Breakdown call

Maximum ease and convenience are our watchwords even if your car breaks down. Pressing a button on the roof module connects you to a Roadside Assistance Call Centre. The car also automatically sends data about its position and condition to the call centre so that you can quickly resolve the issue with the operator or have your car towed.

Online auxiliary heater

Control your car’s auxiliary heating from anywhere in the world via the Škoda Connect App for your smartphone. When you’ve been on a trip and you’re about to set off home, for example, activate your heater beforehand to warm up the car. Besides activation itself, you can also set a departure time and choose between heating and ventilation.

Service Scheduling

With Service Scheduling, you no longer have to fret about when to book another service. Your Škoda service partner and your car will take care of this. The vehicle reports any required servicing to the backend server. The details are sent to your preferred service partner, who contacts you proactively to schedule an appointment.

Petrol Stations

Use Petrol Stations to keep up to speed on the best fuel prices around. Browse a list of petrol stations, their location, and current prices any time you want in your infotainment system. Enter them in the navigation or simply view garages selling your fuel type.

You’ll never be wrong-footed by the weather again. The infotainment screen displays the latest weather at your destination, in your current location or in any other place. Besides the current forecast, including the chances of rain, there is also a 1- or 3-day forecast, plus Meteoradar to track precipitation on the map.

Lock & Unlock

Do you need to lock or unlock your Škoda, but you are too far away from it? This feature can significantly ease life in many situations, for example when you forget to lock the car or want to let somebody else inside. It allows you to lock or unlock your vehicle through the Škoda Connect Portal or Škoda Connect App. It works without any distance limitation.

Online traffic information

Always reach your destination on time and avoid all obstructions along the way by receiving the latest traffic news on accidents, tailbacks and roadworks in your infotainment system, so you can respond instantly. The navigation also factors in this data and dynamically finds the best route.

Parking Position and honk & flash

Don’t panic about where you left your car in a large car park or unknown city. Parking Position consigns those worries to the past. The vehicle transmits its position data once after every trip. After retrieving the data via smartphone or smartwatch, you can find your parked vehicle using its GPS position.

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!

Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.

Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.

We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.

If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

One of the Kremlin Wall Towers in Moscow:

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

Moscow’s subways are called the “People’s Palaces” with their marble coverings and unique designs for each of the different and many stations.:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

We did the day trip to Moscow with Alla-tour and were very pleased with our tour. Our guide whose English was great was a wealth of information and the day went very smoothly. I checked the web site and Alla's prices for 2012 range from $884 a person for two down to $542 a person for 6 with the 5% cruisecritic discount. So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.

We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.

The conditions of the existence of sulfide phases in Fe–Ni–S alloys and four-component Fe–50 wt % Ni–0.001 wt % S– R ( R is an alloying or impurity element from the TCFE7 database) systems are studied using the Thermo-Calc software package and the TCFE7 database. The modification of nickel superalloys by calcium or magnesium is shown to increase their ductility due to partial desulfurization, the suppression of the formation of harmful sulfide phases, and the uniform formation of strong sulfides in the entire temperature range of metal solidification. The manufacturability of superalloys can decrease at a too high calcium or magnesium content because of the formation of intermetallics with a low melting temperature along grain boundaries.
